Serpentine Gallery Pavilion

What is pavilion? It refers to a free-standing structure sited a short distance from a main residence, whose architecture makes it object of pleasure. A pavilion connect with many human activities. There is uasually a connection with relaxtion and pleasure. In this project, as I am a architect from Hong Kong, I 'll add some Hong Kong feature in my pavilion. Location of the site

People mainly gather on the ground floor.The design is simple and ingenious.

The building consists of bold geometric form. Inside the pavilion,there were many activities for visitors to entertain.

2002 TOYO ITO

Shapes are formed within module. The numerous triangles and trapezoids formed by this system of interesting lines were clad to be either transparent or translucent

The plants inside the pavilion divided the pavilion into two areas but visitors couldn't see another side visitors because the plant grew up and tall enough.

//DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

IDEA 01

Hong Kong is a urban city which have man buildings. So the basic form of the pavilion is like a shape of a building. Then I will magnity and rotate and create a movenment for it. Basic form

IDEA 02

This one, I used a geomictic form. The form makes the design seems more modern but it can't blend into the environment. Basic form

//DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

For the exit of the pavilion, people need to stoop their body. When they get into the pavilion. They will have a contrast of the variation of the space.

Human activites should not only limit inside the pavilion

I used wood to be the material. It can connect with the environment because there are lots of plants around the site. For this design, people can choose to sit in indoor or outdoor space.

11

//MATERIALS

For the materials, I chose pieces of woods to build the pavilion. Wood makes people feel warm and it can connect with the environments as the site have lots of plants around it.

THINKING

SLEEPING

THINKING/READING

Thinking area should be in a dark place because it can let people thinking quiet and no one can disturb. Sleeping area should have enough space because cabin is a palce for people to take a rest.

According to idea 01, I added a glass on the sleeping area because it can distribute the space clearly. Also, I added one more floor as table and sitting area.

//PATTERN OF THE CABIN I think the outlook of the cabin should be follwed the interlocking model. And it can distrubute every area of the cabin clearly. The cabin was distrubuted into 3 parts and each part should be used different materials. Reading area should have enough lighting; thinking area and sleeping area should be more dark. Therefore, the materials here are the materials that I used: /white wall /transparent glass /translucent glass

HOTEL EVERLAND L/B ( Sabina Lang & Daniel Baumann)

THE CONCEPT FROM THE DESIGNERS:

Everland is a Hotel with only one room including a bathroom, a king-size bed and a lounge. The bounteous dimensioned room represents the subjective dream of a hotel: the architecture, the playful details, as well as the request to steal the golden embroidered bath towels. All Everland guests are partaking in the project. All facets are important constituents of the artistic idea: The room can be booked for one night only, the minibar is fully stocked and included in the price, breakfast is delivered to the door and a record collection stands at ones disposal.

26

03 | SPACE AS GADGETS - HOTEL ROOM

SPECIAL FEATURES/ EFFECTS

As a design object, every detail is carefully crafted. The curving lines and occasional angle chase each other throughout the space. Vibrant colors and elements like a record player (with vintage record collection to match) enhance the strong 60s mod vibe. Bathroom soap sets and towels retain the "steal me" appeal like in any hotel but the effect of the Everland is of supreme modernity and high design. Also, the hotel can be moved to everywhere. Mostly it will appear in some building’s roof (City’s Light), like sleeping in the sky. You can enjoy the view on the top of the city.

ANALYSIS OF PLANS

All the equipments distribute well in this small room. Al furnitures and walls are in curve. The hotel room only have one big window that for users to enjoy the view go that country. The bathroom and sleeping area are connected together. When the users are bathing, they still can enjoy the view via the gap of the wall behind the bed. All furnitures like link together. For example: bed,lounge and bathroom were linked together perfectly. Also the sofa and table were linked together too. All equipments are very simple and we can find at every hotel room but they just give us different feeling.

27

03 SPACE AS GADGET HOTEL ROOM

//RESEARCH &CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

What is a Hotel? What is a Hotel Room? Hotel is a place that has many rooms for provides lodging paid on a short-term basis. People stay there especially when they are travelling. Hotel room basically has bathroom, a basic bed and storage for clothing and it’s similar with our home. Who will stay? For what purpose? Mostly are business travelers as one of their important customers. It is because businessmen need to travel around the world to do business, so hotel room mean a lot to them. And hotel room likes their other home. How to differentiate Home & Hotel? Do we need to differentiate? Home where people live permanently and the house where people live for few days not live permanently so it’s the main difference. Also, home is a place where you have created a living for yourself, you are attached to it emotionally, it somehow becomes a part of you - it carries the notion of comfort, security, happiness and the like.

28

What is a gadget? What if a room to be a gadget? A gadget is a small tool such as a machine that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. If a room becomes a gadget, it will have more empty space. How the room would be if it is designed as gadget? I think it will have many function in a small space and the storage functions are great and all furniture can be collapse (you can fold it so that it becomes smaller). OR everything can be moved. Where is the pleasure come from? What is the pleasure of temporary living? The pleasure is that hotel room is different with you house. It’s more luxury. Also, pleasure is came from something is tailor to meet your request.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The pleasures for the people who love drawing that is have a place like a studio for them to draw anytime. Also, have a chance for them to hold a gallery. When people are travelling, they will have lots of inspiration. In this time, hotel room can become their other studio. Because of that, my hotel room target customer is for people who love drawing. The necessaries for them are drawing tools, therefore in the hotel room, there is a shelf which offer all the drawing tools. The shelf is around the toilet and it divided the hotel room into 2 areas: 1. Studio 2. Living area. The shelf can be moved and change the space of the room. The second important part of the room is the drawing area. This time Pj02: Space as Gadget I put drawing area and the bath area together. When you move away the drawing table and chair, you will find that the bath tub is under the chair and you can move it to anywhere you want and enjoy the view when you are bathing. Moreover, when you finished your own work and want to share with other users in the hotel. In this time, you can move your shelf and make you own gallery. So it becomes a sharing area with other users. Lastly but least, for the living area, I want the living area like a wood house and make the contrast between two areas. The cabinet of the living areas can be transformed into a seating area, lying area, stair etc. Finally, for the material part, I use concrete floor and woods; they make the contrast between studio area and living area. For the shelf, I used transparent material to it provides a natural lighting for the room and significance of transparency.

04 SITTING OBJECT HKCC LIBRARY

//EXPLORE THE CONCEPT OF SITTING What is SITTING? Sitting is a rest position supported by the buttocks or things where the torso is more or less upright The Japanese tea ceremony is performed sitting in seiza. Who is SITTING? All people in the world; all animals; In what circumstance someone will sit? Tired, imprisoned, playing games, racecar, ride a horse, go to toilet, reading etc. What are the qualities? Comfortable; stimulate our sense (excite, scare, ache, soft…), uncomfortable

38

Are there any relationship between SITTING and location? Yes, different locations have different sitting form no matter the sitting object or the way you sit. For examples, HOME: you can sit freely with different pose and different place at home. THEME PARK: all amusement rides have their own rules, so we need to follow the rules to sit. You can’t break any rules. Are there any relationship between SITTING and culture? Yes, different countries have their own culture so the way they sit will follow their own culture. Also, history will affect the way we sit. History brings many rules to us and we aren’t easy to break rules.

//DESIGN LOCATION

LOCATION: HKCC 9/F Library SITUATION

In the library, its quiet. I found that student mostly will stay at studt area because in the book shelf area there aren't have any chair or sitting area and it's inconvenience. I found that in every crack between 2 book shelfs have a tools for users to take the books. It looks like a chair. Sometimes, when I go to the library, I always sit on it and read books. Also, I found that a part of the library doesn't have any cover, so 10/F and11/F people can look into it. Therefore, student inside the library don't have any pricavy. So I wanna to make a sitting object that can increase the pricavy of library.

39

//DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

01/ The outlook of this sitting object is smiliar with the original one. The sitting part of the obect can be changed by different situation.

02/ It's a two in one sitting object. It can be a chair and stair in the same time. I will add a roll on it, so it can more easily to move. The way separate the chair will use ' wood-working joint '. Also, I will add a canvas to increase the privacy while they are reading.

74

07 | CONCEPT STORE

CONCEPT STATEMENT The store is only for selling the concept of the brand, but not sells their design. This time the interior and exterior space influence each other. It’s inspired by Origami which is the Japanese art of folding paper. The rules of my design that is only can use triangle to create shapes. Because all geometric shapes have different depth, so they create the feeling of oppression in the interior space. People outside the shop can still catch sight of the interior which can attract them to go in. Moreover, the display system of the window display used the machines which can non-stop pulling and shoving the clothes and it can show the 3D to 2D form of the clothes perfectly. This time I choose to display 2014 Issey Miyake autumn and winter collections. Also, some of the designs are just suspended from the ceiling to show the 3D forms. If visitors want to see more information about the design, there are an IPad to explain the construction process. Lots people want to know how to press the clothes into 2D form. Therefore I set a small area for Issey Miyake Reality Lab team’s members, they will come here on a regular time schedule and show visitors how to press it.

08 LOCAL INDIE BAND CENTRE UPCOMING PROJECT

Hong Kong has lots of underground bands/ indie bands which means that they unaffected by the record company and compose their music freely. They don’t have a place to perform and share their music; even they are difficult to find a band room to practice. In Hong Kong, many practice room for local band were in the factories, also Hong Kong don’t have a ‘Live House’ that can hold 700-800 people so not too much organize will put band show into first. Because of that people are infrequently to contact this activity.

82

//AIMS /Practice rooms for local band /learn more culture of local band /publicize local music (hold live band show, choice for band to perform) /hold some workshop (about the musical instruments) /publicize Hong Kong independent music /a revolution of Hong Kong’s pop culture

//TARGET CLIENT Hong Kong Arts Development Council

Their goals are to strive for the vibrant growth of artistic milieu in Hong Kong. They fostering the development of arts groups and raising the level of artistic standards. Also they are exploring development opportunities for artists. Moreover they have enough funds to support indie bands and publicize Hong Kong independent music. Also, HKADC oppose government revitalising industrial buildings.

08 | LOCAL INDIE BAND CENTRE

//Q&A //What are underground bands/ indie bands? Underground music comprises musical genres beyond mainstream culture. Any song that is not being legally commercialized is considered underground. Such music may tend to express common ideals, such as high regard for sincerity and intimacy, freedom of creative expression as opposed to the highly formulaic composition of commercial music, and appreciation of artistic individuality as opposed to conformity to current mainstream trends //Why indie bands aren’t popular in HK? Hong Kong’s local and underground music scene, though enthusiastic and intrepid, has never been able to gain enough momentum to really establish itself on an international platform. This may be for any number of reasons – Hong Kong’s relatively small size as a city, little support for underground bands, a lack of live music venues.

//Do you think that there are more people in Hong Kong that want to see live music? In Hong Kong, I don’t think that’s changing that much. But, you know, around 20 years ago, there would be one or two shows every six months, which everyone wanted to go to. But nowadays, there are one or two shows a week. The quality of the bands is going down and I think one of the important reasons is that they don’t have a good environment for them to practice and don’t have much choice to show. Because of that set up a band cultural center maybe can publicize local music. //What can Hong Kong’s indie scene do to grow? One major problem with H.K.’s Indie scene is the tendency to just reach the same small group of people over and over again, and not actively search out new ways of gaining followers. There needs to be better promotion and new ways of getting the message across if indie culture is going to survive and thrive in Hong Kong.

83

KWUN TONG Kwun Tong is a art village. Lots of studios and band rooms are in Kwun Tong industry buildings. There were 1/4 band rooms hold at Kwun Tong.The location made it convenient for bands to transport their gear since most had rehearsal rooms in Kwun Tong's many industrial buildings. Inside the old industrial buildings and you’ll find a new generation of workers is setting up business there: young artists, entrepreneurs and restaurateurs in search of larger spaces and cheaper rents.

//DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Music lets me think of the sound image

//IDEAS 02

By layers, the stage is in the UG/f every floor people can look into the stage.And each floors' people eye level won't be obstructed. //IDEAS 02 I think indie music is like a cell. Music split like cells and the variation of the beat like cells too. Indie music is split from the local music and it's like a cell, it's diversification.

//IDEAS 01

//IDEAS 03

One of the aim of my design is to publicize local indie music. Maybe visitors wanna know what happen inside the band room. POP MUSIC

INDIE MUSIC BY LAYERS

08 | LOCAL INDIE BAND CENTRE

//DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Use a basic form (box) to create the form of the building.Overlap the boxs and shift some of the box into different direction. Add a cover to cover the gap between two floors.

93

//DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The middle floor will be an enentrance which can connect to Flt the Flyover 01 and it will like a platform and bridge. For the floor, it's between with others, other floor are noise, music is everywhere. In this floor, it ll be very quiet and have different passages for visitors to different floors. When you go into another floor, we will have a different feeling.

//DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The passages of my main idea of my design. The passages are inside tall pillars. There will have a S sharp stair and a elevator inside it. Visitor can choose to walk or use elevators. When you walk into 1/f (the floor connect the Fly the Flyover 01) , you will see lots of pillar and there's some notices on it and you can go to different rooms.

//FLOOR PLANS 02

After i drew floor plan 01, I found that the scale which I drew is wrong. Therefore I draw it again with a right scale and found that the spaceis really big, so I am now considering the size of my design and I need to build up a testing model too.

97

//FLOOR PLANS 03 & SECTION

I decided to make ever y livehouse to be a single block which refers to dif ferent music(use different materials). N ow, my d e s i g n h ave fo u r livehouse with different size. And every floors have different height: livehouse 8m-10m; other floors 5m.

09 ZHI ZHA MONG KOK MTR

Our project in this workshop is to publicise the culture of Zhi Zha. Zhi Zha always makes people feel terrible and some people think that it's a symbol of dead. But it's not, Zhi Zha is not only for offering sacrifices to ancestors, sometimes Zhi Zha can be a symbol of LUCKY. Therfore, we decided to hold a small workshop tp publicise this chinese culture. First, we need to make some outer of the Zhi Zha. After that, poeple can decorate their own Zhi Zha work. We put our workshop out of Mong Kok MTR station and ask people to join it. Whatever, it's a new experience for me .

3D WORK INSTALLATION ART

As the site is strange so I want to do something strange too. The hands represent the other side of the wall is a different world and the hands movement are like crying for help. It’s a radial balance five hands concentrate on one point. Emphasis the direction all hands have different directions. Also, it contrast the value. The relationship of my design and the chosen site Because the site are strange and the hands are terrible so it’s match. The lamp of the site lighting the place that the shadow divide a small area where I install my works. So my work can be more emphasize

10 | OTHERS - 3D - MODULAR COMPOSITION

I had chose Octahedron to create a form. I continue use this form and uninterrupted repeat the form. Also in the back, I chose to empty the middle part of the model and it can show people the shape inside the model. For me, it’s the most satisfactory part of the model.

3D WORK

Transformation of a Living Creature I choose to make outlook of the chipmunk like paper folding. And it doesn’t have any radian. I exaggerate the feature of chipmunk and modify it to be its function. The most difficult part is combine the card board with different size and angles. If I make it imprecise, it cant combine together. For reflection, I think the function of it can be more prominent. Also the outlook of it can be more detailed.

2D WORK

2D Form Metamorphosis

The reason that I chose penguin and coffee maker is because they have a similar outlook. The most difficult part is that I need to transform it by only three steps but you can’t transform too much or less in each step. I think this two objects are too similar , so its easy to transform them. Next time I want to try to transform two objects which not alike. l learnt that every thing can be transformed into other thing but you need to transform it step by step and you cant skip any steps in the process.

Pattern & Color Expression

01 SADNESS

02 HAPPINESS

03 LOVE

Before I used AI to draw my work, I drew about 15 drafts. All the patterns which created by me are repeated and overlapped. The most difficult part is that I need to think about how to apply different color schemes that I only can use 3 different color to express the emotion.

2D WORK

For my final work s, I used repeat pattern to make my work become orderly. And I used the contrast between black and white to make the pattern stand out. For improve par t, I can create some pattern randomly to make the works seem casual.

2D WORK SBA - THIRST FOR...

Ever yone wants to have their own romantic love story just like fairy tales. Fairy tales affect lot of people, certainly me. I remember that I have read a real love story before; this story was happened in China for many years ago. The most touching part of this story was a man used his own hand to build a stairs to his wife because h e w a n te d h e r c a n b e m o r e conveniently in the daily life. Although you can feel the true love in those love stories, it won’t happen in reality world. In reality life, it won’t have any princess or prince and won’t have a people pay all his/her time to love you but everyone still thirst for it…
