A Letter from Our Creative Director In 2003, I designed my rst lamp, a chandelier made of ceramic antlers. I made the rst ones myself. I bought an antler on eBay and made a plaster mold that must have weighed 100 pounds. If I timed it right, I could make three antlers per day. I would then drive the fragile, unred antlers two hours north to the nearest ceramic shop I could nd with a large enough kiln. The antlers would be red, glazed and red again, a process that took about a week. When nished, I would again drive two hours north to pick them up. It was not the most efcient way to make a lamp. I needed to nd a real ceramic shop to make antlers. Unfortunately, a making ceramic antlers is a bit complicated. No one would touch the u . job. One day, I was speaking with a mold-maker who said, “Why don’t m o supply shop in a you try Nina?” At the time, Nina owned a ceramic c small city a long way from New York. In e the.back of the shop she made some custom pieces. She agreed to give adit a shot.

r

t out. Two of the tips of each antler There were a lot of details to be worked n uto the correct diameter to accept the socket. would need to be boredsout . done by hand while the clay was still wet. The This would have to be w wall thicknessw would need to be exact; too thick and the wires won’t t through; w too thin and they would break in shipping. Most importantly, we had to gure out a way to re them. The antlers had no bottom to sit on and I didn’t want to use stilts, which would have left pin-holes in the glaze. After much trial and error, Nina’s husband John developed a custom-made support that would slip into the socket holes and hold the antlers vertically while being red.

Things started slowly. I’d get a couple boxes of antlers every month or so. As time moved on, the boxes started coming more frequently. Eventually, Nina closed the ceramic supply shop and moved into a larger space dedicated almost entirely to making my ceramic antlers. We now get a full pallet of antlers every week, each one made by hand by Nina and John. At Roll & Hill, we are constantly looking for suppliers like Nina and John, suppliers who are willing to do whatever it takes to make a unique product. Uniqueness is what makes a Roll & Hill lamp. Agnes Agnes is a an elegant design, featuring a modular anodized aluminum

structure which can be assembled in configurations starting from a small, 10 light chandelier to a 40 light chandelier or even larger sizes. “Agnes, in its ideal state, would be a very large xture. You could ll up a whole ceiling,” says the designer. Articulated joints allow for the bulbs to be rotated and arranged in a multitude of ways. The bulbs can be completely vertical, which is churchlike and formal. When the angles change, it becomes more whimsical.

Agnes Candelabra

The Agnes Candelabra are inspired by our heroine Agnes, a worker in the world’s oldest profession during the 1849 American Gold Rush. Defying the expected roles as wife and mother, she instead chose the fierce independence and transient lifestyle of the frontier. The modular system allows Agnes easy set up in her makeshift “workspace.” A warm glow transforms the room.

Designed by Paul Loebach

Paul Loebach was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio amid the industrial landscape of the American Midwest, where he departed for the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 2002. Descended from a long line of German woodworkers, his father is a manufacturing engineer who developed new plastic forming technologies for Union Carbide in the 1970s. Paul sees his projects as an idealistic fusion of his family’s distant and more recent history. After graduating from RISD, Paul moved to New York City and established a design studio where he currently works as a consultant, specializing in wood furniture and emerging manufacturing technologies.

Bluff City 14-inch

Bluff City Bluff City merges a traditional pendant shade and a wire-cage into an

industrially inspired but reď€ ned pendant. Powder coated metal encloses a bulb and a copper plated socket. While this combination gives the light a vaguely postmodern feel that echoes the Memphis movement, the design is actually named after the American city, which is also known as Bluff City

Designed by Jonah Takagi Born in Tokyo and raised in New England, Jonah received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. For several years, Jonah designed furniture that he built in a friend’s studio while playing bass guitar, touring and recording with several indie rock bands. Needing to develop and showcase a growing body of work that was filling his house but few had seen, Jonah founded Atelier Takagi in 2005.

Theo Richardson, Charles Brill and Alexander Williams are Rich Brilliant Willing. Founded in 2007, Rich Brilliant Willing is an internationally recognized multidisciplinary design studio. Why do they work together? The combined output is greater than sum of individual parts. Each member has a different point of view; one explicitly loves materiality, another has an unconventional color palette and eye for sculptural form, the third is an inventor bringing spontaneity and theatrical energy to the work.

Designed with a Scandinavian craftsman, the Himmeli Lights are inspired by the traditional straw Finnish Christmas ornaments from which they derive their name. Superordinate Antler Collection

The Superordinate Antler Collection, designed in 2003, have become inuential in breaking the rigidness of contemporary modernism and initiating the back to nature movement in design. The natural environment offers such a breadth of beautiful forms, why not bring it indoors? The Superordinate Antlers are nature, made better.

Jonas Damon is a New York–based designer who emphasizes a hybrid approach to his work. Since 2008, he has been a creative director at frog design, leading a creative team helping the world’s leading companies bring innovative products and experiences to market. As principal of Office for Design, a practice he started in 2000, he creates highly personal and experimental objects that serve to inspire the marketplace, and mines cultural memories to create emotional connections between objects and their users. These two occupations are at opposite ends of the industry but play a vital role in informing each other: they are both about creating meaningful products and experiences. Educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, Jonas Damon’s clients have included: Areaware, AT&T, Chrysler, Comcast, Idee, Fiat, Target, and Unilever.
