A Message from our Executive Director Welcome to the Sun Valley Center for the Arts 2010 Wine Auction. This is our 29th year of presenting an event with a rich history of offering outstanding wine, wonderful food and the opportunity to make and enhance friendships. Thanks to you, this great tradition continues to flourish and prosper! The mission of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts is “to provoke and stimulate the imagination while opening hearts and minds through excellence in diverse arts programming.” We do this by offering exhibitions, lectures, classes and performing arts events that touch on issues relevant to our times and by bringing some of the world's most interesting artists, writers and thinkers to our small community in central Idaho. To present these programs, The Center relies on the generosity of our donors, and more specifically, you, our Wine Auction patrons. More than half of our funding comes directly from the Wine Auction, and this year your impact is as essential as ever. Arts education is a major part of what we do at The Center. We are committed to partnering with local schools to bring authors, musicians and artists to work directly with students of all ages. The Center's outreach programs supplement the school curriculum with in-school classes and workshops that are offered free of charge to students and teachers. In addition to in-school programs, The Center provides a robust scholarship program that has given more than $375,000 to over 225 local students and educators since 1999. The majority of funds for scholarships come directly from the Wine Auction. Your attendance, participation and bidding on auction items impacts the lives of children, adults and an entire community in profound and enduring ways. Thank you in advance for your generosity this weekend. We are extremely grateful for your attendance, your love of the arts and your belief that the arts are a crucial part of all of our lives. Please enjoy the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction weekend—and raise those paddles high!

Bill Ryberg, Executive Director, Sun Valley Center for the Arts

GUEST CHEFS Christopher Kostow The chef of a Michelin-starred restaurant before the age of 30, Christopher Kostow takes a thoughtful approach to food that belies his age. Masterfully blending contemporary French cuisine with the farm-to-table tradition, Christopher creates a transcendent experience for diners every night at The Restaurant at Meadowood in Napa Valley. He has introduced dishes that draw on the bounty of the seasons while taking a disciplined approach to modern French fare. Upon arriving at Meadowood in February 2008, Christopher garnered four stars in the San Francisco Chronicle, maintained two Michelin stars, was nominated for Best Chef: Pacific by the James Beard Foundation and was named as one of FOOD & WINE magazine’s Best New Chefs 2009.

Beau MacMillan As executive chef of Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain and its signature restaurant, elements, Beau MacMillan inspires his staff with his passion for fresh ingredients. His ingenuity in the kitchen is stimulated by his belief that food should not be overworked, but rather appreciated for its simplicity and natural perfection. This philosophy is evident in Beau’s innovative seasonal menus that focus on fresh, local ingredients procured from a network of artisans and organic farmers. A graduate of Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, Beau has cooked in some of America’s most distinguished kitchens from Massachusetts to Florida and the West Coast. In 1998 he moved to Arizona, where he developed the cuisine at The Ranch on Camelback, which later became Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain. Together with former executive chef Charles Wiley, he opened elements restaurant in March 2001. In 2006, Beau competed (and won) against chef Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America (“Battle American Kobe Beef”). He served as co-host of the Food Network’s hit series Worst Cooks in America and has appeared several times on NBC’s Today Show.

Riedel Wine Symposium with Maximilian Riedel

Maximilian Josef Riedel, 11th generation glassmaker, is CEO of Riedel Crystal America. Born in Vienna, Maximilian joined the family business at the age of 20, training in sales and administration. He introduced Riedel into the Dubai market and then spent two years in Paris with Riedel and its French importer, Ercuis, where he managed sales and conducted tastings. Since taking the reins of the U.S. operation, Maximilian has quadrupled Riedel’s sales in the U.S. and Canada, making them the company’s largest export markets. Always on the go, he frequently travels to conduct glass tastings where consumers and the trade can experience firsthand why the glass makes a difference in wine enjoyment. His charm, quick wit and depth of knowledge have made him a sought after speaker at wine festivals and tastings. In 2009, Maximilian, along with his father, Georg Riedel (10th generation), introduced over 7,000 people to the Riedel-glass tasting experience. Maximilian introduced Riedel Restaurant in 2001 exclusively for restaurants that wanted to provide their guests a 3-star wine experience along with a 3-star food experience. Just a few years later, in 2004, he created the sometimes-controversial Riedel “O” stemless tumbler, which became the most successful new collection in Riedel’s history. Since the series debut, the “O” Chardonnay glass was selected for the permanent collection at the Corning Museum of Glass. Not content to only design stemware, Maximilian has also created a number of awardwinning decanters. His first, Cornetto, was inspired by the graceful neck of a swan and has become a sommelier favorite over the years. Next came the ergonomic “O” decanter, whose design balances effortlessly in the hand and won the prestigious Good Design award for outstanding industrial design presented by the Chicago Athenaeum. Following a trip to Venice in 2007, Maximilian collaborated with his father on three dramatic decanters representing birds in flight—Swan, Paloma and Flamingo; and in 2009 Swan was chosen as a winner of the Red Dot Award for product design. Continuing to push the boundaries of design while remaining true to Riedel’s “form follows function” philosophy, Maximilian designed the innovative cobra-like Eve decanter in 2008, which now holds a patent from the German government. Exotically shaped and crafted to enhance wine enjoyment to the max, Eve double decants wine as the liquid flows into and out of the coils, achieving hours of decanting in just moments. Recently, Maximilian spearheaded partnerships with two renowned U.S. art and design schools, Parsons The New School for Design and Pratt Institute, as a way to develop new products and designs for Riedel's lifestyle brand, Nachtmann, while at the same time providing students with a real world design experience.

Wine Symposium

“The Power of Pinot” with Master Sommelier Fred Dame Fred Dame brings an impressive blend of experience, expertise and enthusiasm to the world of wine and cuisine. He is the first American to have served as President of the Court of Master Sommeliers Worldwide and is currently the President of the Guild of Sommeliers Education Foundation. In his role as Vice-President, Luxury Sales, Foster’s Wine Estates Americas he directs the domestic sales of fine wine brands including Etude, Beringer, Penfolds and Stags’ Leap. One of just 105 Americans to have passed the Master Sommelier examination, Fred was the first to successfully pass all three parts in a single year. This feat and his high score won him the coveted Krug Cup of the British Guild of Sommeliers in 1984. Fred founded the American Branch of the Court of Master Sommeliers in 1986 and has played an active role in the expansion of the Master Sommelier program throughout America since that time. As Cellarmaster of The Sardine Factory in Monterey, California, for twelve years, Fred created a wine list that won the Wine Spectator Grand Award and turned the restaurant into a wine destination restaurant of world renown. He was awarded the Antonin Careme Medal and was made a Supreme Knight of the Knights of the Vine in 2000. He was elected to the prestigious National Restaurant Association College of Diplomates in 2004. In 2006 he received Santé magazine’s Wine Professional of the Year as well as Starwine’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A sixth generation Californian, Fred graduated from Washington and Lee University with a degree in journalism and communications. A European trip after high school piqued his curiosity about wine and food. Since then, he has applied his considerable persuasive skills to the service and appreciation of fine wine.

Auctioneer David Reynolds Returning for his 28th consecutive appearance, David Reynolds again lights up the stage on behalf of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. He charms, cajoles and entertains with spontaneous one-liners— and along the way, he has transformed the role of fundraising auctioneer into performance art, with his own distinctive signature. His San Francisco firm, Reynolds & Buckley, LLC, annually raises in excess of $25 million for charities. Their client list is nationwide, and David’s events have been in Wine Spectator’s list of Top 10 Charity Auctions for years. In addition to the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction, the roster includes Auction Napa Valley, Auction of Washington Wines and the Central Coast Wine Classic. Unique in a niche of his own creation, his focus is solely on fundraising auctions. Every week, his firm works on behalf of organizations large and small. In addition to arts groups such as the Sun Valley Center, there are health care and research efforts, schools, museums, orchestras, children’s charities and other deserving causes. Despite his love of the grape, his events are not limited to wine fundraisers. He also lifts his gavel to offer fine art, travel, dining, sports and a myriad of other items for charity events. While on stage, his boundless vigor and witty style keep the bidding spirited from start to finish. Yet auctioning is only part of his contribution to fundraising success. David is also a proven expert on the theater and science that make a fundraising auction effective. The lively blogs that regularly appear on www.reynolds-buckley.com provide not only insights into life on the auction circuit, but also insightful observations and tips on best practices. Colleen Buckley, his wife, is his partner in this venture. The firm also includes the energetic and entertaining Greg Quiroga, who is again appearing with David on stage tonight. Ed Gold, a bright and rising star on the circuit, completes the firm’s talented auctioneer/consultant triumvirate.

Auctioneer Greg Quiroga Sharing the stage with his mentor, David Reynolds, Greg Quiroga returns for his fourth action-packed year raising his gavel on behalf of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Since joining Reynolds & Buckley in 2004, Greg has emerged as a dynamic force on the national fundraising auction circuit. His onstage blend of humor, passion and quick wit continue to endear him to auction crowds across the country. In the Reynolds & Buckley tradition, his commitment to helping organizations is not limited to his onstage performance. Greg works tirelessly with an eye on successfully planning and implementing the best fundraising auction for each individual crowd. This dedication has earned him a large and loyal client base of over 60 charities nationwide. “In the past six years I have worked with Greg, I have realized that he is nothing short of a miracle worker. His auctioneering talent and expertise are the best, bar none, and I wouldn’t dream of having an auction without him," says Patricia Colin, Director of Development, International School of the Peninsula (California). An avid golfer and the golf blogger for the San Francisco Examiner, Greg and his wife, Michele, live in San Francisco with their son, Ryder.

Featured Auction Dinner Wines The Sun Valley Center for the Arts would like to recognize the wine producers listed on the following pages for donating the wines being poured at every table during tonight’s auction dinner. We thank them for their generosity and their contribution to the success of our 29th Wine Auction.

Adriano Adami

Established in 1920 on land considered some of the finest in the Veneto for producing Prosecco, Adriano Adami today is one of the leading producers of this elegant, slightly sweet Italian sparkling wine. Three generations have contributed to Adami’s success over the years by establishing relationships with growers in the top Prosecco regions of Valdobbiadene, Cartizze and Conegliano and utilizing the most modern winemaking technology and equipment, all to produce outstanding wines. One of the benchmarks of the region, Adami Prosecco is now an international brand, enjoyed around the world by those who appreciate fine wine. This sparkling wine is donated by Adriano Adami, Armando and Franco Adami, Cobertaldo di Vidor, Treviso, Italy. About the Wine: Adriano Adami Bosco di Gica Brut Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Fresh, elegant and engaging, this lively wine captures the essence of Prosecco. Peach, apple and pear are evident on the floral aromas and fresh, light-bodied flavors. With generous sparkle, subtle sweetness and refreshing acidity, it is a versatile wine that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with casual fare.

Arkenstone Vineyards

The Arkenstone Vineyards story begins in the 1980s, when Ron and Susan Krausz fell in love with a wild and undeveloped piece of land on the slopes of Howell Mountain overlooking the Napa Valley. The promise of the site as a place to grow exceptional grapes eventually convinced the couple to take the plunge, and in 1998 they planted the first blocks of an organically farmed estate vineyard that now encompasses 12 acres. In 2005 they began the process of building a small winery and aging cave on the property, and in 2006 brought winemaker Sam Kaplan on board. Arkenstone Vineyards—named for an incomparable gem mentioned in The Hobbit—debuted with the 2006 Arkenstone Howell Mountain Sauvignon Blanc. Today Arkenstone Vineyards produces small bottlings of extraordinary Howell Mountain Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Obsidian, a proprietary Cabernet Sauvignon–based red blend. About the Wines: 2007 Arkenstone Howell Mountain Sauvignon Blanc Aromatics of green apple, wet stone, flint and subtle spring flowers greet the nose that approaches this elegant, rich Sauvignon Blanc. Full yet soft in the mouth, its dominant citrus zest flavor opens to reveal undertones of honeyed lemongrass, almond, papaya, kiwi and ripe Haogen melon. Beautifully balanced and structurally complex, it unfolds in layers that continue through a very long, crisp finish. Aged sur lee in both French oak barrels and stainless steel for nearly a year and bottle-aged an additional year prior to release, this Sauvignon Blanc has richness and complexity that can be appreciated both as an aperitif and as an accompaniment to great food. 2006 Arkenstone Obsidian Howell Mountain Red Wine This first release of Obsidian celebrates the years of planning, planting and maturation of the vines at Arkenstone. Well worth the wait, this luscious structured beauty reveals sweet aromatics of macerated cherry, brambleberry, cassis, fig and black licorice, with

Featured Auction Dinner Wines

underlying notes of black truffle, earth and clove. On the palate, Obsidian displays equally vivid fruit, depth and complexity. Supple tannins, satiny soft mouthfeel and exceptional balance combine to create an extremely long and elegant finish. Showing beautifully now, it will also cellar well into the next two decades.

Donelan Family Wines

Since 2000, Joe Donelan and his family have been on a wonderful journey. After many years of enjoying and learning about fine wines from others, they had the opportunity to get involved on a deeper level as founders of their own boutique winery. First as Pax Wines and now as Donelan Family Wines, they have explored vineyard sites and Rhone grape varieties to find greatness and express it in wines that define terroir. They look forward to your company as the journey continues. About the Wine: 2008 Donelan Walker Vine Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley Syrah Pure plums and blueberry provide a dark “blue” core for other components like smoke and flint to complement. The aromas are enticing and seductive, with tremendous purity. Silky and smooth, this multilayered, multidimensional Syrah encourages second and third glasses. Almost impossible to resist now and for the next five years, but with the promise to evolve well beyond that time frame.

Elkhorn Ridge Vineyards & Winery

Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Oregon’s premier wine grape region, Elkhorn Ridge Vineyards & Winery is dedicated to growing exceptional Pinot Noir grapes and producing exceptional Pinot Noir wines. Beginning in 2000, Elkhorn Ridge established 21 acres of estate vineyards near Monmouth, Oregon, utilizing several different rootstocks in combination with various Pommard and Dijon clones. Very close vine spacing and dry farming limit vine yields, but result in grapes of exceptional character. Elkhorn Ridge winemaking focuses on retaining that exceptional character and enhancing complexity through judicious aging in small oak barrels. Elkhorn Ridge wines are by design limited editions, with most releases produced in quantities of fewer than 500 cases. About the Wines: 2008 Elkhorn Ridge “777” Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Produced with the Dijon “777” clone of Pinot Noir, this delicious Pinot Noir showcases generous black fruit character, subtle mineral and spice complexity, and superb balance. Vibrant and forward, it is a wonderful example of Pinot Noir from the outstanding 2008 Willamette Valley vintage. 2008 Elkhorn Ridge “La Terre Foss” Willamette Valley Pinot Noir A blend of four different Dijon clones and a Pommard clone, “La Terre Foss” exhibits sublime fruit complexity. Bold, layered red fruit aromas and flavors mingle with earth notes in a wine both sophisticated and surprisingly structured. While already drinking well, it promises to evolve beautifully with time in the cellar. Another delicious example of Pinot Noir from the outstanding 2008 Willamette Valley vintage!

Sun Valley Center Wine Auction 2010

2007 Elkhorn Ridge “La Terre Foss” Willamette Valley Pinot Noir A blend of four different Dijon clones and a Pommard clone, “La Terre Foss” displays a more “feminine” character than its “777” brother. Marked by red cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit, this medium-bodied Pinot Noir is accented by subtle white pepper and earth nuances. An underpinning of refined tannins suggests this approachable Pinot Noir will continue to develop in the bottle for three or four more years.

E. & J. Gallo Winery

Since its inception in 1933, the family-owned E. & J. Gallo Winery has been known for its unwavering commitment to quality. By taking the utmost care in each and every step of the winemaking process, E. & J. Gallo Winery has consistently delivered outstanding wines for every occasion and price. The winery continues to be at the forefront of the wine industry by researching and determining the very best regions to grow grapes, employing the most effective techniques to grow grapes and utilizing the best in technology and tradition to craft world-class wines. About the Wines: 2007 William Hill Estate Napa Valley Chardonnay An elegant, medium-bodied Chardonnay that showcases generous red apple, pear and tropical fruit character, accented by coconut and vanilla complexity. A hint of creaminess on the palate is nicely balanced by crisp acidity that lingers on the finish. 2006 Louis M. Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon This impressive Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits deep garnet color that heralds intense aromas of ripe cherry, cassis and pipe tobacco. Concentrated flavors of ripe plum and Bing cherry meld seamlessly with subtle oak, herb and earth nuances. Smooth yet structured, it culminates in a long, elegant finish. 2008 MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir The elegant strawberry and raspberry aromas of this cool-climate Pinot Noir reveal spice and mushroom notes with aeration. Red currant, strawberry and raspberry flavors are complemented by spice and earth complexity. Already drinking well, it will gain additional refinement with time in the bottle.

Somerston Wine Company

High in the hills above the Napa Valley, in an area historically known as Rancho Catacula, Somerston is more paradise than property. Two adjacent pieces of land—Priest Ranch in Soda Valley (692 acres) and Lynch Vineyards in Elder Valley (990 acres)—were purchased by F. Allan Chapman in 2004 and early 2005 to create Somerston. Today Somerston encompasses a herd of Dorper sheep, several gardens, a small olive orchard, nearly 300 acres of vineyards, and a high-tech winery that utilizes a variety of proven technologies to achieve unparalleled energy efficiency and sustainability. It currently produces three separate wine brands—Highflyer, Priest Ranch and Somerston.

Featured Auction Dinner Wines

About the Wines: 2008 Highflyer Napa Valley Grenache Blanc Vibrant melon and citrus aromas lead to layered nectarine and spice flavors that culminate in a smooth, refreshing finish. The alluring fruit and rich body of this estate-grown wine are balanced by crisp acidity. 2007 Priest Ranch Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Deep purple in color, this Cabernet Sauvignon brims with aromas of black fruit, violet and vanilla. Mouthfilling black cherry, dark chocolate, cedar and cinnamon flavors are supported by fine tannins and a long finish.

Va Piano Vineyards

Chi va piano, va sano e va lontano. “He who goes slowly, goes safely and goes far.” This old Italian saying sums up Va Piano Vineyards’ approach to winemaking and to life. After falling in love with Italian culture, proprietors Justin and Liz Wylie established Va Piano Vineyards in 1999 with the vision of making small lots of well balanced, full bodied red wines that capture the essence of Walla Walla Valley grapes. In 2004 they built their Tuscan-style winery and tasting room and in December of 2005 released their first vintages. Today Va Piano Vineyards produces Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, two Cabernet Sauvignons and Bruno’s Blend, a proprietary red—all inspired by Tuscany, yet quintessentially Walla Walla. About the Wines: 2007 Va Piano Columbia Valley Syrah This is a monster of a Syrah! Vine age and vintage have produced this big, dark, ripe and rich wine. On the nose and on the palate, blueberry, plum and black cherry dominate, with just a hint of minerality in the finish. Very smooth in texture and superbly balanced, it should continue to develop well with cellaring. 2007 Va Piano Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon A Cabernet Sauvignon that incorporates Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, this is a classic example of the inimitable character Washington State can produce. Layers of dried black cherry, cassis, leather, spice, tobacco and chocolate captivate on the palate, with refined tannins providing grace to the finish. This is a ripe, luscious and very satisfying wine that can be enjoyed now through 2020.

Live Auction Lots Sun Valley Center for the Arts Wine Auction 2010

Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs, 2005 A big—REALLY BIG—bottle of Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs traditionally kicks off the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction. This year the fun begins with a monumental Salmanazar from the exceptional 2005 vintage. Chardonnay from vineyards in several very cool North Coast locations, including Carneros, Anderson Valley and the Marin coast, produced a cuvée of delicate fruit and profound structure. Partial barrel fermentation and two years of bottle aging on the yeast after secondary fermentation contributed polish and complexity. This is a classic Blanc de Blancs— crisp, toasty and elegant. As is customary with this first lot, the bottle is chilled and ready to be opened by saber and enjoyed with friends. To make the sacrifice bearable, this lot also includes three Magnums—one each of 2001 Schramsberg J. Schram, 1999 Schramsberg Reserve and 2006 J. Davies Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon—for the winning bidder to take home. The high bidder should know that providing a glass of bubbly to your hardworking and faithful auctioneer is widely considered a portent of good luck.

The Picnic Artist Lowell Herrero feels a deep affinity with farmers working the land. He portrays them bursting with life, over-large and enduring— extensions of the very soil they cultivate. Each painting showcases the inner vitality and richness of the landscape with a whimsy that invites smiles. The irrepressible joy of his work has made it wildly popular and placed it in very distinguished places—Wolfgang Puck commissioned three large paintings to hang in his restaurant Spago in Beverly Hills! The Picnic features two motifs Herrero never tires of painting— harvest and larger-than-life figures. Combining his vibrant use of color and signature style of naïve distortion, it celebrates simple pleasures amid a bountiful landscape. Printed in a limited edition of 125, this 40 x 28 inch giclée is signed, numbered, mounted on archival paper and handsomely framed.

Magnum P.R. Party—At Your House! First held 10 years ago, the Magnum Pig Roast (P.R.) Party has quietly— okay, NOT so quietly—become one of the most anticipated events of the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction weekend. What began as a casual party where attendees would share Magnums of their favorite wines and feast on spit-roasted pig with all the fixings became such a big deal, it finally had to be limited to invitation-only. With interest so strong, we have decided to create a live lot that will enable the winning bidder to host his or her own Magnum Pig Roast Party for 60! On a date of mutual convenience, our master pig roasters, David and Trish Wilson, will set up shop at your place—in the Sun Valley area, please—and roast a pig to perfection. The side dishes will be delivered, wines will be uncorked and the party will be ON! All the high bidder need do is arrange the date (perhaps an anniversary or birthday?) and invite the guests. And to make it exactly like the original, Sun Valley Center Wine Auction donors have provided 16 incredible Magnums to be enjoyed by the lucky guests. 2006 Blackbird “Illustration” Oak Knoll District Proprietary Red Wine (hand etched and presented in a branded wood box)

Home on the Range Chappellet Vineyard Two dozen would-be ranchers will spend the day—and eight will spend the night—experiencing the life of an Idaho sheepherder with Brian and Kathleen Bean of Lava Lake Lamb and Cyril and Blakesley Chappellet of Chappellet Vineyard. Lava Lake Ranch lies about an hour southeast of Sun Valley, where the Pioneer Mountains collide with the Snake River Plain. Known for raising the best tasting lamb in Idaho, Lava Lake Ranch is one of the West’s most important wildlife and land conservation sites, with private holdings and public grazing leases covering nearly one million acres. During this day you will meet shepherds, scientists, horses, Border Collies and Great Pyrenees as you learn about the life of a sheepherder. Explore sagebrush and grassland plains, foothill and mountain ecosystems, and be on the lookout for more than 100 bird species as well as black bear, elk and wolf. Work up an appetite, because that evening’s barbecue will feature lamb ribs and leg of lamb paired with Chappellet’s award-winning wines. The Beans and Chappellets will cook the vittles, pour the wines and tell you tales of life on their ranches on Lava Lake and Pritchard Hill. While most of the group will go home with full stomachs and warm memories when the sun sets, eight will spend the night among the sheep in four well appointed, traditional sheepherder's wagons. When you emerge from your wagon bedroom the next morning, the Beans and Chappellets will treat you to a pancake breakfast before you head home to “city life.” The high bidder will go home tonight with three Magnums of wine from Chappellet’s famed Pritchard Hill vineyards as a memento of this once-in-a-lifetime sheep ranch experience. Pop the cork on a 2007 Chappellet Estate Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2007 Chappellet Signature Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon or a 2005 Chappellet Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Franc and recount your day as a sheepherder, hopefully over another Lava Lake Lamb dinner. That afternoon the couples will sightsee Wellington, New Zealand’s sophisticated capital city: viewing the city from the summit of Mount Victoria, touring the Te Papa National Museum, and browsing the shops and cafés along the waterfront. February 19 will be spent at sea on the Orion, providing a restful opportunity to relax in the sauna or Jacuzzi, enjoy the coastal scenery, get in some exercise in the oceanview fitness room or enjoy a lecture on New Zealand’s natural history. By the morning of February 20, the Orion will have landed in Napier in the heart of Hawke’s Bay. A compelling course on a dramatic site makes Cape Kidnappers one of the highlights of this golf adventure. fairways, daunting hazards and very difficult greens. The remainder of the day will be spent exploring in and around Napier, from the town’s Art Deco architecture to the extraordinary Cape Kidnappers gannet colony—the best spot on mainland New Zealand to see these seabirds nest. The next day provides a second opportunity to tackle Cape Kidnappers, plus a chance to tour the wineries of Hawke’s Bay and taste their award-winning vintages. On February 22, the Orion heads back to sea to cruise past dramatic coastlines and pristine islands. On this leg of the journey, on-board lecturers will detail the region’s exploration and settlement by European sailors. Arriving at the Bay of Islands the next morning, the group will challenge Kauri Cliffs, a course that became one of the world’s top 50 just one year after completion. Dazzling sea views and demanding tee shots compete for attention, and the back nine includes a series of holes that hug the cliffs. A Kiwi culinary experience is also on the schedule, with a lesson on preparing New Zealand cuisine followed by a gourmet lunch paired with North Island wines. February 24 offers a second chance to master Kauri Cliffs, plus a visit to New Zealand’s most historic site—the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the Maori and British treaty was signed in 1840. While the Orion heads back to sea to complete the cruise that evening, the couples on this adventure will settle in for a two-night stay at The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs, one of the most awarded small hotels in New Zealand. Featuring accommodations with sitting rooms and private porches, an outstanding restaurant, two tennis courts and an infinity pool, plus panoramic ocean views at every turn, The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs also is adjacent to the Kauri Cliffs course. While this stay is the last one scheduled for the couples on this adventure, the high bidder also will receive a onenight stay for four at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, a beautiful boutique lodge located in a captivating natural setting adjacent to Cape Kidnappers on Hawke’s Bay. An additional round of golf for four at one of these great courses—Kauri Cliffs or Cape Kidnappers, the high bidder’s choice—is included. Also included in The Farm at Cape Kidnappers stay is a tour and tasting at Te Awa Winery, one of the best wine estates in Hawke’s Bay. To help their golf games, this golf adventure package includes some top-notch Nike golf gear for the winning bidder’s foursome to take home—two complete sets of men’s clubs, two complete sets of women’s clubs, four golf bags and plenty of golf balls. Fore! Transportation other than noted, airport taxes, passport/visa expenses, excess baggage charges, personal expenses, travel insurance, cost of optional accommodations upgrades (when available) and three dinners in Queenstown are not included. Package is valid for the listed dates only and cannot be transferred or resold. Stay at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers is to be scheduled in advance and some restrictions may apply.

Idaho Mountain Playhouse The “Idaho Mountain Playhouse” is a collaborative project launched in 1995 by brothers and longtime valley residents Craig and Jason Roth. The project was originally conceived to benefit their college alma mater’s annual scholarship fundraiser. This year Jason Roth, Roth Marketing Group, LLC, opted to keep the project local, with the proceeds to benefit children’s programs at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. The Idaho Mountain Playhouse is rustic, rugged and strong. The structure is 6 X 8 feet, but feels much larger due to the exaggerated roof overhangs and exposed beam ends. Featuring wood-frame construction and an open-beam ceiling, the playhouse shows quality throughout—reclaimed fir beams and knee-braces, reclaimed cedar siding and ipe (ironwood) trim, cedar shake roof with copper drip-edge, metal-clad wood windows, Black Absolute granite countertops, knotty birch cabinets with stain and glaze finish, rustic knotty oak Formica flooring and Rocky Mountain Hardware custom wire-brushed pine entry door, window and cabinet hardware and a bronze plaque. This Idaho Mountain Playhouse is perfect for children or grandchildren, and the winning bidder will be proud to bestow this high-mountain gem to them. Delivery of playhouse to the winning bidder’s home in the Wood River Valley is complimentary if completed on Saturday, July 24, the day after the Wine Auction Gala. The cost of delivery after July 24 will be paid by the winning bidder.

Your Own Private Haven Trefethen Family Vineyards When Gene and Katie Trefethen came to the Napa Valley in 1968, they tackled a real fixer-upper. The 19th century vineyard they purchased was dead or dying, the “ghost” winery on the property had no roof and the ancient house was beyond dilapidated (a sardonic Brit called it “charming”). Plus, almost no one was making wine in Napa at the time. Everything proved to have good bones however, and Gene and Katie— soon aided by the next generation of John and Janet—began restoring the old estate. To say their efforts have borne fruit is no pun. The winery is now a National Historic Landmark and the vineyard has helped shape the Oak Knoll District into one of the finest wine-growing regions on earth. The winning bidder will take some of this heritage home tonight in the form of a Double Magnum of the 2005 Trefethen Reserve Oak Knoll District Cabernet Sauvignon (99 points by Wine Enthusiast) and two Magnums of 2005 Trefethen Oak Knoll District Cabernet Sauvignon (97 points by Wine Enthusiast), both multiple gold medal winners. Also included in this lot is a two-night stay for four (two couples) at Trefethen Family Estate. With views of Stags Leap, the “Cottage” guesthouse is a secluded sanctuary in the middle of the vineyard. Just a ten-minute walk away is the “Villa,” which founders Gene and Katie refurbished into a spectacular home. Third-generation Trefethens Loren and Hailey are the lucky current tenants, and on one night of your stay, they will be your hosts for dinner in its remarkable garden. Beneath three ancient oaks, Katie created an extraordinary five-acre botanical treasure, and it will be yours to enjoy during this memorable dinner and to explore throughout your visit. After a personal tour of the garden led by its caretaker, master gardener David Alosi, you will face a difficult choice: to leave the estate and see more of the Napa Valley, or to relax poolside at your own private haven with Katie’s favorite treat—champagne and caviar. Stay and dinner are to be scheduled for dates of mutual convenience. Transportation is not included.

Yuroz is an artist of the people. Everyone from lovers, musicians, poets and athletes to the homeless and even refugees fill his canvases, drawing forth a spectrum of emotions and moods that reside deep in the human soul. In recent years Yuroz’s art has received unprecedented recognition. In 1995 he created The Harlequin’s Gift for Comic Relief, and beginning in 1998 and continuing for several years, he created an annual work for the Suzuki Rock & Roll Marathon. He was selected by the Vatican to create a painting to honor Saint Arcangelo Tadi; that work—The Light of Compassion—was blessed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 and now hangs in the church renamed in the saint’s honor in Botticino, Italy. Done in a cubist style, The Music in Her Soul depicts a scene both intense and serene as two musicians serenade a woman who is enjoying a glass of wine. Win a 2010 Lexus RX 450h Hybrid in this exclusive drawing that supports the Sun Valley Center for the Arts!

PROGRESS JUST MADE PROGRESS.

It wasn’t so long ago that the words "luxury" and "hybrid" were considered mutually exclusive. The original RX Hybrid changed that. It introduced a new category and proved that conventional truisms were anything but. It proved that when technology and optimism combine, almost anything is possible. It couldn’t be more fitting, then, that the model that brought us the world’s first luxury hybrid is the one to change the category again with the completely re-engineered RX 450h. Nearly every hybrid component has been made more lightweight, while the entire system has been made more intelligent for greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions. At the same time, its performance was enhanced with an intelligent shift-control system, a first for a hybrid. The winner of this raffle will win a 2010 Lexus RX 450h Hybrid. This luxury sport utility vehicle offers a highly advanced voice-recognition system that allows climate control and audio to be remarkably simple, along with a 3.5-liter V6 Atkinson-cycle engine that works differently than conventional engines to convert more of the energy generated during combustion into mechanical energy. It also features a hybrid battery that is lighter and more compact than that found in the previous-generation RX Hybrid. As a result of these advancements, the RX 450h produces 295 total system horsepower.1 Of course, it wouldn’t be a Lexus without its trademark luxury features. The 2010 RX 450h Hybrid offers an available Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound Audio System,2 which delivers unparalleled listening experiences, Intuitive Parking Assist and multi-zone climate control. The re-engineered RX 450h has appointments that make any travel unquestionably Lexus-like and perfectly suited to the Mountain West lifestyle with the driver in mind. Unbelievable? That’s the power of optimism. That’s the power of h.

Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003

46 live lots

Opening Bid $1,300 Includes One 3-Liter Bottle Donor John and Barbara Shafer, Owners Shafer Vineyards Napa, California

Shafer Hillside Select is a wine of place, produced each vintage from carefully selected blocks of the hillside vineyard surrounding Shafer’s Stags Leap District winery. The grapes from these blocks are small and deeply colored, with concentrated flavors that are enhanced by meticulous winemaking and long aging in small French oak barrels. Shafer Hillside Select’s voluptuous fruit, velvety texture and sweet oak complexity have made it one of the Napa Valley’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignons. The 2003 Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon displays bold, expansive fruit, layered complexity and beautiful balance. It received a 95 from The Wine Advocate, one of the highest scores earned by a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that year. It is offered here in an exceptionally rare Double Magnum, a size that promises several more years of development—but only if the high bidder can resist the temptation to open it! John and Doug Shafer of Shafer Vineyards recently received a prestigious James Beard Award for “Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional,” the first Napa Valley vintners to receive this award since 1996.

That evening, join JoAnn and Cris Cherry at Villa Creek Restaurant for a wine dinner showcasing Villa Creek Cellars’ impressive Rhone blends. During the last day of this Paso Robles adventure, the couples will be hosted by Terry and Jennifer Hoage at Terry Hoage Vineyards for a barrel tasting and cheese and wine pairing lunch, followed by a game or two of bocce ball (wagering is encouraged) with Terry Hoage and neighbor Eric Jensen of Booker Vineyard. Also included in this lot is a Magnum six-pack from participating Paso Robles vintners—Booker Vineyard, Villa Creek Cellars, L’Aventure Winery, Epoch Estate Wines, Caliza Winery and Venteux Vineyards. Reaching from Humboldt County in the north to San Diego County in the south and from the Pacific Coast in the west to the Sierra Nevada in the east, it covers an immense number of vineyard acres—522,000 at last count—and dozens of regions. The three wines that comprise this lot come from three of California’s best vineyard locations. The 2006 Husic Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, from a small estate in the Stags Leap District, shows superb ripeness and finesse. The 2004 Michel-Schlumberger Estate “Deux Terres” Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, from benchland vineyards in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, offers delicious red fruit, spice and pepper character. The 2006 Manzoni Private Reserve Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, from Monterey County’s Santa Maria Highlands, makes its mark with elegant cherry fruit, violet nuances and age-worthy structure.
