Celebrating 20 Years of Theatrical Excellence

The founders of Company of Fools came to Hailey 20 years ago pulling a small U-Haul trailer behind them. One man, one woman, a five year-old, two dogs and a cat. Nothing on their life path up to that point had suggested Idaho. But there they were, driving from Richmond, VA to—almost literally, it seemed—the craters of the moon.

Several other intrepid souls followed over the years, pitching their tents and rolling up their sleeves and holding the doors open. In time, many more joined them. And the community came. And these doors have been open ever since. Before the road gets any longer, we pause in gratitude and look back. And when we do, we realize, “Of course. That’s why we came here.”

August: Osage County By Tracy Letts Sep 30–Oct 17 • Liberty Theatre, Hailey

$30 / $35 nonmember / $30 senior (62 and over) $15 student (18 and under) / $30 group (8 or more)

A vanished father. A pill-popping mother. Three sisters harboring shady little secrets. When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites after Dad disappears, their Oklahoman family homestead explodes in a tornado of repressed truths and unsettling secrets. This major play is the best play of the 21st century and unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family. Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play.

A Year with Frog and Toad By Robert & Willie Reale Dec 16–Jan 3 • Liberty Theatre, Hailey

$30 / $35 nonmember / $30 senior (62 and over) $15 student (18 and under) / $30 group (8 or more)

The play remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends— the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather naive Toad—through four, fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the spring, they proceed to plant gardens, swim, rake leaves and go sledding, learning life lessons along the way, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special. Perfect for ages 5 and up! With support from Marcia & Don Liebich

Outside Mullingar

By John Patrick Shanley Feb 17–Mar 5 • Liberty Theatre, Hailey

$30 / $35 nonmember / $30 senior (62 and over) $15 student (18 and under) / $30 group (8 or more)

Outside Mulllingar is about the romance of Anthony and Rosemary, neighbors in rural Ireland, who are nearing their middle years. It is by turns poetic, uplifting, dark and funny as hell. Anthony is an introverted farmer and Rosemary is the woman who vows to have him at all costs. When Anthony’s father threatens to disinherit his son, Rosemary steps into the middle of a land feud and family eccentricities beyond what one might imagine. On the brink of romantic catastrophe, this one-of-a-kind Irish heroine fights against time and mortality in hopes of securing her dream of love.

Mauritius

By Theresa Rebeck Fri & Sat, Oct 23–24, 6:30pm • The Center, Ketchum $10

After their mother’s death, two estranged half-sisters discover a book of rare stamps that may include the crown jewel for collectors. One sister tries to collect on the windfall, while the other resists for sentimental reasons. In this gripping tale, a seemingly simple sale becomes dangerous when three seedy, high-stakes collectors enter the sisters’ world, willing to do anything to claim the rare find as their own. Part of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Sleight of Hand.

Casa Valentina

By Harvey Fierstein Sat, Jan 16, 6:30pm • Liberty Theatre, Hailey $10

Set in the idyllic Catskills mountains in the 1960s, Casa Valentina is a discreet venue for men who enjoy dressing up and acting as women. When the opportunity to become an official organization arises, Casa Valentina must decide whether this would help their clientele gain recognition in society or wreak havoc on their personal lives. Part of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Role Play.

Dear Elizabeth

By Sarah Ruhl Wed, Mar 16, 6:30pm • The Center, Ketchum

$10

Dear Elizabeth is a play in letters that follows the beautiful and bittersweet friendship between two of poetry’s greatest literary treasures, Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. Part of The Center's BIG IDEA project I Need to Tell You Something. Dec 11, 2015–Feb 20, 2016

BIG IDEA projects are multidisciplinary in nature—they feature an exhibition, lectures, classes, film, performing arts and theatre. Participate in a single event or go deeper, exploring the idea through many different lenses.

The way we understand gender is shifting from strict categories of male and female toward looser definitions that give us all more freedom. At the same time, traditional expectations of gender roles remain entrenched in our culture in sometimes surprising ways. How have we transcended gender Lindsay Morris, photograph from You Are stereotypes? Where do they still exist? Has the You, 2015, courtesy the artist emergence of prominent transgendered men and women changed the way we think about gender? What will more fluid definitions of gender mean for how we organize our society and raise our children?

FILM: Girl Inside Jan 28, 7pm

This BIG IDEA project considers surface and reality, authenticity and authorship. Recently, the art world has exploded with stories of art forgeries. At the same time, some artists make a career producing copies of famous paintings under their own names—sometimes as a way of exploring the history of art. What defines an Mark Landis, Bathers, in the style of Lionel Walden (1861–1933), 2013, “authentic” work of art? What’s the difference between a collection of Colette Loll, image fake, a forgery and a copy? From historical reenactments to courtesy Laila Abudul-Hadi Jadallah historical fiction, we are a society fascinated with retelling and reinterpreting history. Join us in a conversation about the line between illusion and truth in the history of art and beyond.

When was the last time you received a hand-written letter? Or sent one? In this era of instantaneous communication, a handwritten letter is a rare item. As social media begin to replace letter writing— and even email—this BIG IDEA project considers how we communicate today, and how radically communication has changed over the last thirty years. What happens to our personal histories as we stop writing letters? Will social media make us less…social?
