Arts Making an Impact Dear Friends of The Center, The arts represent one of the cornerstones of a vibrant and engaged society. Educational arts experiences develop depth of character, problem-solving skills and creative thinking. These experiences shape our understanding of our roles as citizens. I am honored and inspired to be part of a community that cares so deeply about and recognizes the importance of the arts. From The Center’s spring exhibition on letter writing, which engaged 590 students, to Craters of the Moon, our nationallyrecognized exhibition in collaboration with the National Park Service Centennial, The Center’s programs continuously enrich the lives of children and adults through transformative arts and educational experiences. Every year, more than 1,250 students visit the gallery to engage with art. They learn to look closely, to describe what they’re seeing and what it means to them, and to listen to each other’s observations. When they leave The Center, they do so inspired. I witness Arts Making an Impact every day. Results from our spring membership drive indicate that those who value The Center range widely in demographics. Over 2,500 people—a significant percentage of the valley’s population—are member donors. The Center is fortunate to have such a dedicated family of supporters who recognize the value of artistic investment in the future. I invite you to engage with The Center more deeply as we move forward with key initiatives, including arts education programs, Company of Fools and BIG IDEA projects. My support for The Center began 20 years ago as an audience member at summer concerts and Company of Fools productions. Over the years, I have come to trust that when I take my seat at a Center event, I will leave enriched. We could not inspire, educate or create without you. Working together we connect nearly 40,000 people in our small community through arts and culture every year. You have a powerful impact as participants, audience members, Wine Auction attendees and donor members. Thank you for making our community a wonderful place to live. This is YOUR Center. With Gratitude,

Christine Davis-Jeffers COO

Program Overview

Professional museum educators and teaching artists work with secondary, core, non-arts classroom teachers to develop a project and co-teach an element of planned curriculum through a hands-on art project. • Provides students with new tools for interpretation and problem solving • Encourages skill building, three dimensional learning, critical thinking and selfexpression skills • Provides educators with a new model for teaching core material • Reinforces and supports the learning students are doing through more traditional methods • An important skill-building opportunity for teachers

CLASSROOM ENRICHMENT

Program Overview

Professional museum educators offer students and teachers an exploration of visual art exhibitions. Students engage with the art work, the ideas behind the exhibition, the museum educator and their peers through observation and discussion. Students also create a hands-on art project linked to the content of the exhibition. • Students engage with art and ideas through object-based conversation and art-making experiences, strengthening critical looking and thinking skills • Students hone visual and self-expression skills through discussion as well as hands-on making • Students develop understanding that art is a means for interpretation of the world around them • Teachers have an experiential learning opportunity that reinforces curricular themes • Students in our rural community have an active, positive museum experience

STUDENT EXHIBITION TOURS

PROFESSIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCIES

Program Overview Musicians, actors, dancers, authors and visual artists visit Blaine County Schools to offer performances, presentations, workshops and classes. Residencies range from all school assemblies to one-on-one or small group workshops in classrooms. • Students learn from professional artists about the value of hard work, commitment and self-expression • Students are exposed to live performance, global cultures and artistic styles; residencies are often a student’s only experience of live performance • Artists work side by side with secondary students and their teachers, refining technique and approach • Students often perform publicly with music professionals, motivating students to do their best work

BIG IDEAS — The Center Connects

Craters of the Moon

May 20–July 30, 2016: Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Ketchum, Idaho May 20–late September, 2016: Craters of the Moon National Monument, Arco, Idaho

Craters of the Moon is an exhibition in two parts: one at Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco, Idaho, and one at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in Ketchum, Idaho. Coinciding with the National Park Service Centennial, the project celebrates a uniquely Western environment: Craters of the Moon National Monument, “a weird and scenic landscape” (in the words of Calvin Coolidge) that evolved over eight volcanic eruptions that occurred 15,000 to 2,000 years ago. Craters is a vast sea of black lava flows, tubes, caves and cones, dotted with sagebrush and other vegetation and punctuated by wind-sculpted limber pines. The area first gained attention when explorer Robert Limbert walked the 50-mile length of its Great Rift in 1920 and then began lobbying for National Park designation.

The exhibition at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts features work by five artists, each considering Craters of the Moon from different points of view. The Center has commissioned two of these artists to create large-scale sculptures located outdoors at Craters of the Moon National Monument during the summer of 2016 and then relocated to sites in the city of Ketchum in the fall.

From our Artistic Director The arts play different roles in peoples’ lives but one thing they offer everyone is their ability to connect. They connect us to ourselves, to each other, to ideas and to our present. They serve as inspiration, as release, as sources of insight and joy. Sitting in the Liberty Theatre watching a story unfold together we laugh, gasp, and sometimes cry. Listening to a concert with our friends and children, we share a sense of wonder as talent sweeps us up in collective rhythm. Walking through an exhibition listening to an artist discuss their approach to their work enriches our understanding of our world, offering a new perspective that broadens our vantage point. The Center’s winter and spring offerings promise to create new connections as well. P.W. Singer will spark our intellect as he prompts us to consider the changing nature of warfare. International Guitar Night promises to ignite our sense of awe as guitarists from multiple cultures and traditions come together to wow us with their virtuosity. We hope, too, that you will connect to each other through engagement with our BIG IDEA projects, which are equally rich but very different from each other. This winter we explore the promise and peril of technology through Rayguns, Robots, Drones. This spring, we settle down and in to examine the link between art and contemplation in Contemplative Practice, a BIG IDEA project that allows us to partner with other non-profits whose business is meditation, wellness and spirituality. The Center organizes BIG IDEAS to provide multiple avenues into the conversation, whether through film or a play reading, a lecture or panel discussion. Family Days and evening exhibition tours are great ways to more deeply experience the art in the museum. All of it is built as an invitation for you to participate and have some fun doing it. We hope you will come, join us and connect!

Kristin Poole, Artistic Director

All Center programs are supported by public funding for the arts through the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the Idaho Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Winter & Spring Artists' Bios CONCERT: Brett Dennen

Tue, Jan 24, 2017, 7pm Sun Valley Opera House, Sun Valley Brett Dennen is a nationally celebrated singer songwriter with 6 albums to his credit. He’s performed at Austin City Limits, Newport Folk and Telluride Bluegrass Festivals and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman and Conan O’Brien. He weaves his wry sense of humor into his beautiful carefully crafted songs. Dennen attributes his unique style in part to being homeschooled by parents who encouraged creative exploration. In addition to his skill as a musician, Brett is a philanthropist, visual artist, wine maker, environmentalist and avid skier. His love of the environment grew out of his experiences at Camp Jack Hazard, a summer camp he attended and later worked at as a counselor. Located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the camp’s beauty inspired Dennen to create this winter’s “Ski Town” tour. The tour combines Dennen’s love of skiing with his concern over the future of resort towns in the face of climate change. While in the valley, Dennen will work with 8th grade music students at the Community School and present a concert with those workshop students. “We think it’s time for the whole world to take notice of Brett Dennen’s expert pop songcraft.” —KCRW, Morning Becomes Eclectic Part of The Center’s 2016–2017 Professional Artist Residency program.

LECTURE: P.W. Singer

Thu, Feb 9, 2017, 6:30pm Church of the Big Wood, Ketchum P.W. Singer is the author of multiple awardwinning books, and a contributing editor at Popular Science. Dr. Singer is considered one of the world’s leading experts on changes in 21st century warfare. Singer’s book Wired for War examined the implications of robotics and other new technologies for war, politics, ethics, and law in the 21st century. Wired for War made The New York Times non-fiction bestseller list in its first week of release. Ghost Fleet: A Novel of the Next World War (2015) is Singer’s debut novel. It melds nonfiction style research on emerging trends and technology with a fictional exploration of the future of war at sea, on land, in the air, space, and cyberspace. “The premier futurist in the national security environment.” —The Wall Street Journal Part of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Rayguns, Robots, Drones.

Winter & Spring Artists' Bios CONCERT: International Guitar Night Tue, Feb 14, 2017, 7pm Sun Valley Opera House, Sun Valley

International Guitar Night (IGN) is North America’s premier mobile guitar festival. For over twenty years IGN has brought together the world’s foremost acoustic guitarist composers to perform original compositions and exchange musical ideas in a public concert setting. Each season founder Brian Gore invites a new cast of guitar luminaries to join him for a special evening of solos, duets and quartets that highlight the dexterity and diversity within the world of acoustic guitar. This winter gypsy jazz legend Lulo Reinhardt (grand-nephew of the legendary Django Reinhardt) is stepping in as guest host. He’ll be joined by three incredibly dynamic musicians: Italy’s innovative contemporary guitarist Luca Stricagnoli; brilliant Brazilian composer/performer Chrystian Dozza; and India’s ground-breaking slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya. Luca’s inventive “tapping” techniques have garnered over 7 million views on YouTube; Chrystian is the recipient of many prestigious awards as one of Brazil’s leading young guitarists; and Debashish has invented his own technique for playing classical Indian music on the slide guitar. These musicians promise a lively and innovative performance. While in the Wood River Valley, IGN will perform an interactive concert for the 55 students of Silver Creek High School. In preparation for IGN’s visit, students will research the ensemble members’ musical techniques and cultural heritage. Current students at Silver Creek have a deep interest in music. Last spring one of the students built a recording studio within the school. In December 2016, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts donated five guitars to Silver Creek High School to nurture student interest in the instrument and encourage use of the recording studio. The donation was made on behalf of country music artist Keith Urban, who provided the guitars as a way to support The Center’s Professional Artist Residencies. Part of The Center’s 2016–2017 Professional Artist Residency program.

CONCERT: Las Cafeteras

Fri, Apr 7, 2017, 7pm Wood River High School Performing Arts Theatre, Hailey In 2005, rooted in community and tradition, a group of students learning Son Jarocho music (a regional folk music style from Veracruz, Mexico) became known as “Los Cafeteros,” named after the Eastside Cafe community center in East Los Angeles that they helped found. They soon changed their name to Las Cafeteras to honor the feminine spirit of the group. Over the years, Las Cafeteras have developed a genre-bending sound and presented electric live performances with the purpose of sharing the hidden stories of migrant life in Los Angeles. Las Cafeteras have been inspired not only by Mexican music, but, in true American style, have integrated the sounds that surround them, from rock, reggae and hip-hop to Motown. Through music, Las Cafeteras is trying to help build “a world where many worlds fit.” While in the Wood River Valley, Las Cafeteras will spend four days visiting over 2000 students with musical performances in valley schools, sharing their music and their message of inclusivity. Part of The Center’s 2016–2017 Professional Artist Residency program.

BIG IDEAS — The Center Inspires

What’s “ the

BIG IDEA?”

The arts bring us together as a community. They create dialogue, build connections and help us define our place in the world. Much of The Center’s programming is built around themes, “BIG IDEAS” that are relevant to the world today. BIG IDEA projects are multidisciplinary in nature—they feature an exhibition, lectures, classes, film, performing arts and theatre. You can participate in a single event or go deeper, exploring the idea through many different lenses.

Video and digital documentation of programs is generously supported by the Wolfson Family Foundation

Idaho Stories

October 21, 2016–January 6, 2017 What are Idaho’s stories? Who has told them? How have contemporary artists and writers interpreted those stories? This BIG IDEA project presents a loose narrative informed by Idaho’s literary history. Key figures are Ezra Pound, born in Hailey; author and illustrator Mary Hallock Foote, who lived in Boise; self-taught artist James Castle, based in Idaho all his life; Ernest Hemingway, who visited the state many times before ending his life in Ketchum; and Marilynne Robinson’s novel Housekeeping, set in northern Idaho. Scott Fife

Rayguns, Robots, Drones: Technology’s Peril and Promise

January 13–March 18, 2017

Can any technology ever exist solely for good? Science fiction authors have imagined worlds in which technology becomes a threat. But is this more than the stuff of fiction? This BIG IDEA project is an opportunity for a look at the role of technology in our real lives as well as our fictional fantasies. Using robots, drones and rayguns as metaphors for technological advances, the project examines the complex nature of technology’s inherent promise and its potential danger.

Michael Salter

Contemplative Practice

March 24–June 23, 2017 What is the connection between art and contemplation? For centuries, artists have created religious objects meant to offer a contemplative or devotional experience. But how do art and contemplation intersect outside established religious traditions? This BIG IDEA project uses work by artists engaged with contemplative practices as the basis for a larger investigation of the role of meditation and mindfulness in our world today.

Your support matters! THANK YOU! Whether you attend exhibitions, Company of Fools professional theatre, lectures, classes, films or concerts, or just enjoy the fact that our community has an abundance of these opportunities, we count on your support to continue to provide programs that make the Wood River Valley such a special place to live and visit.

Wood River Valley residents live in a very remote part of a very remote state in the Western US, and by car you are limited to a two-lane road to find us. One of the greatest values of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts is that they act as a conduit to the world for our students. Through the efforts of The Center, fabulous pockets of talented individuals are funneled to our schools for rewarding and intimate encounters with worldclass talent. —Fritz Peters Individual Member Donor & Wood River High School Principal

For our family, The Center is a catalyst for creative thinking, contemplation, culture, conversation…I love the interdisciplinary and interactive exhibits they put together. There is truly something for everyone, of any age, tied into thought-provoking themes that resonate for us all. We couldn’t imagine this valley without The Center. —Carrie, Clint, Maya & Tessa Lightner Family Member Donors

When we moved to the Sun Valley area from San Francisco, its well established cultural environment was a significant factor in our choice. Our expectations have been so far exceeded with the opportunity to see an array of world-class artists, speakers, actors and musicians in an intimate venue and the chance to have dialogue with them as well. We treasure the fact that these artists go into our local schools and work with children who would never have this kind of exposure in most communities in this country. —Linda & Clay Bowling Benefactor Member Donors

My husband and I are members of The Center because we want to help support the programming that we find so intellectually stimulating. Yet, equally important to our values is that The Center is dedicated to educating the youth of our valley. —Gail & Rhys Wilkie Benefactor Member Donors

The Center's History

Founded in 1971, Sun Valley Center for the Arts is the largest arts organization in the state and oldest in the Wood River Valley. The Center has grown from a few people presenting classes and events to an organization that serves more than 40,000 attendees every year (in a valley with a population of 22,000). In 2006, The Center received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in recognition of its adherence to the highest standards of operation and programming. Only five percent of America’s arts and cultural institutions share this distinction.

Since its founding in 1997, Company of Fools has contributed to the rich cultural life of the Wood River Valley and the national theatre arena. Governor Dirk Kempthorne honored Company of Fools as a recipient of the 2004 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and in 2000, the Company became the first theater in Idaho’s history to receive Constituent Theatre status from Theatre Communications Group.

In 2012, The Center merged with Company of Fools, ensuring that the Wood River Valley remains an Idaho hub of professional, world-class theatre.
