You may have heard the news—that Company of Fools and Sun Valley Center for the Arts are becoming one organization. It’s true— and we want to celebrate with the community on January 2nd. The two organizations who you know for world-class theater, lectures, exhibitions, community events, music performances, educational experiences for all ages and more … are becoming one. We invite you to come to the Liberty Theatre to hear more about what we have planned, how we decided to come together, and what it means for our community. In a nutshell—it means more. More inspiration, more ideas, more creativity, more ways for our community to experience excellence in the arts. Join us as we all embark on this incredible new chapter for the arts in the Wood River Valley.

EXHIBITION: Crossing Cultures: Ethnicity in Contemporary America Through Feb 23 (in Ketchum) In an increasingly multiracial country, what role do ethnic and racial categories play in constructing identity? This project explores this question through artwork that takes signs and symbols from traditional cultures and translates them into a contemporary context, looking at shifts and changes in cultural meanings. Featuring installations by Joe Feddersen and Bob Dix alongside work by Julie Chang and Ana Serrano. Sponsored in part by Paul G. The Center’s Crossing Cultures T Richard Rodriguez has written an autobiographical trilogy on class, ethnicity and race, with the final installment entitled Brown: The Last Discovery of America. Rodriguez received a 1997 George Foster Peabody Award for his PBS NewsHour essays on American life. As a part of our project, Crossing Cultures, he will discuss themes explored Brown. ONE NIGHT WORKSHOP: Tracing Family History with Donna Voyles R In this evening workshop, Donna Voyles will show students how to begin the process of navigating through online genealogical websites. Uncovering names, dates and people from the past, students are likely to discover something new about themselves as well. Basic computer knowledge is required. FREE Evening Exhibition Tour*—Crossing Cultures CONCERT: David Wax Museum, as a part of The Center’s Crossing Cultures T Combining Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering and donkey jawbone rattling, David Wax Museum fuses Mexican and American folk and rock traditions to create a unique aesthetic that has won Boston’s Americana Artist award. Performance and residency sponsored in part by: Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the Donald W. & Gretchen K. Fraser Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation, with additional support from WESTAF, the Western States Arts Federation and the NEA. EXHIBITION: Home Front, Mar 1–May 25 (Ketchum) What happens when a soldier returns home from war? How does she go from a military routine to a family routine of carpools and laundry? How does he integrate back into a community that may not even know the names of the places he has been? What do we do at home to support the war effort and the needs and concerns of returning soldiers? This exhibition of contemporary and historic work will explore the ways in which individuals recover from and communities respond to the contemporary realities of war. EXHIBITION: Home Front: Higher Ground R Mar 14–Jul 4 (Hailey) Part of The Center’s project Home Front, this exhibition features artwork made by men and women who have participated in Higher Ground’s rehabilitation programs for wounded veterans alongside Hailey photographer Matthew Hayes’s photographs of Higher Ground participants. Veterans are sharing artwork they make as part of their therapy, ranging from photography to quilts, handmade knives, pens and wooden bowls.

TIME STANDS STILL by Donald Margulies T In his “absorbing, intelligent” and timely play, Donald Margulies uncovers the layers of a relationship between a photojournalist and foreign correspondent—once addicted to the adrenaline of documenting the atrocities of war and now grounded in the couple’s Brooklyn loft. Margulies revisits themes of what it means to be an artist as characters ask: What does it mean to capture suffering on film, rather than stopping to intervene? Sponsored in part by Jeri Wolfson.

Auntie Miller has been granted the capacity to communicate with the spirits of those soldiers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Or so she says. Auntie has made a good business exploiting the fresh wounds of families who have lost their sons and daughters on the battlefield. ADULT CLASS: Orientalism from Eugène Delacroix to Arthur Wesley Dow with Courtney Gilbert and Kristin Poole T In preparation for The Center’s summer exhibition on Japanese printmaking and American art, Courtney Gilbert, Curator of Visual Arts, and Kristin Poole, Artistic Director, present two lectures on Orientalism in European and American art. The lectures will trace the relationship between Asian and Western art in the 19th century, from the Romantic era paintings of Delacroix and Ingres that exoticized the Middle East to the work of artists like Monet, Gauguin, Whistler and Arthur Wesley Dow, who looked to Asian art for aesthetic inspiration.
