SEASON BROCHURE

From The Artistic Director As I peruse this schedule of programs I am struck (again!) by how fortunate we are to live in this place where not only are we filled regularly by nature’s beauty but we also have so many ways to nurture our minds and spirit. The Center’s coming season is rich with opportunities to stimulate and provoke, to be wowed or filled with wonder. It is extraordinary that in this remote little town in the mountains of Idaho we get to hear Shankar Vedantam talk about how the brain controls our feelings and prejudices, or to watch Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry’s award-winning novel, Peter and the Starcatcher, come to life on the stage, or to share with local students the versatility and virtuosity of Portland Cello Project. Lucky, lucky, lucky! And we are so lucky because our members value this balance of mind, body and spirit and, consequently, they continue to give to The Center. The Wood River Valley is not a corporate town. Instead, The Center benefits from the combined blessings of families and small businesses, retired couples and family foundations that give generously to support the fantastic programming that everyone in the community enjoys. Thank you to Center members who make so much possible. For some years The Center has identified itself as a multidisciplinary arts organization because of our unique way of exploring an idea or theme through the lens of different artistic disciplines. We have embraced this approach because it allows us to explore in depth BIG IDEAS of relevance to our world and to offer you different ways to join the conversation. We know some of you are most comfortable in the movie theater, others love to look at visual art, still others have their imaginations ignited through the theatre. It is our hope that through whatever avenue you are comfortable with you will be intrigued by the BIG IDEA that we are exploring and that curiosity will compel you to step into another program—go to the related lecture, take a class or come to a gallery walk-through. We invite you in—encourage you to indulge your curiosity—and to look at the BIG IDEA from a new or different vantage point. This coming year we have three very different BIG IDEAS that we will be examining through art in the gallery and concerts, theatre and film, lectures and panel discussions. We hope you join us as we dig into Forests, Foraging and Fires, The Influence of Rock & Roll and The Brain. There is much to learn, lots of stories to share and new ideas to consider. We look forward to these conversations and to seeing you often. Kristin Poole, Artistic Director
What’s the
BIG IDEA? BIG IDEAS: MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS For more than 15 years, The Center has focused on creating original programs and exhibitions that consider one BIG IDEA. These multidisciplinary projects are designed to stimulate the imagination, promote conversations, provoke thought and engage our community. When exploring a BIG IDEA, you can count on a project that will include: • a gallery exhibition in Ketchum (and maybe Hailey too) • exhibition tours with Center curators and docents • a play or play reading • a teen workshop • a family day (with gallery tours for families) • documentary and/or feature films • a lecture and/or panel discussion All address the BIG IDEA from different points of view. In addition to the core elements above, a BIG IDEA might also include: • a concert or performance • a talk by an exhibiting artist • a seminar or book club • an artist residency in the schools • a studio art, writing or theatre class for adults We’ve got three BIG IDEAS scheduled for the 2014–2015 season. The key elements of each project are listed here, but films and additional programs will be added closer to the opening of each project. Check out our website and Facebook page to learn more—or sign up for our emails. Members receive exhibition announcements that list all events related to the BIG IDEA. Video and digital documentation of programs is generously supported by the Wolfson Family Foundations.

BIG IDEA
FORESTS, FORAGING AND FIRES Aug 23–Nov 12, 2014
A look at the forest as an ecosystem, a resource and a place of transformation, this project considers our relationship to the forest. What do we take from it, both materially and spiritually? What kinds of human and animal societies inhabit it? What role does fire play in maintaining the health of the forest and what is its impact? How do we and should we manage the forest?

BIG IDEA
UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ROCK & ROLL Nov 21, 2014–Jan 30, 2015
A celebration of an art form with uniquely American origins and its impact on our culture. Since the 1950s, Rock & Roll has influenced not just music in America (and around the world) but politics, film, television, design and visual art. The project will include a timeline illustrating connections between Rock & Roll and social, political and historical events. How did a musical genre come to define an era?

BIG IDEA
THE BRAIN
Feb 6–Apr 17, 2015 An exploration of the most complex and least understood part of the human body. The Center presents The Brain as a community-wide conversation about recent advances in neuroscience (scientists have learned more about the brain in the past ten years than in all previous centuries) as well as a celebration of its wonder and mystery. The project will consider multiple aspects of the brain: its structure, memory, vision, the impacts of brain injuries and strokes, diseases that target the brain, how it can heal and more. A four-week symposium will include lectures, films, brown bag lunches and small format classes to investigate the brain, how it works and how we can care for it.
