The mission of the Sun 足Valley Center for the Arts is to stimulate and 足provoke the 足imagination while 足opening hearts and minds through diverse arts programs.

About The Center

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ core purpose is to engage people through art and ideas. We fulfill our purpose by offering high-quality arts programming in a variety of disciplines including theatre, music, visual arts and humanities. We are at the center of stimulating ideas, inspirational moments, thought-provoking conversations and lifelong learning in the Wood River Valley.

Our Unique Approach

The Center has cultivated a unique, multidisciplinary approach to the arts by organizing what we present into 8–10 week intervals that explore different “big ideas” of interest to our community and relevance to life in the 21st century. With equal emphasis on visual arts, performing arts and humanities, The Center gives people a variety of ways to see, hear, touch and experience an idea through the works of world-class artists, musicians, authors, filmmakers, playwrights and experts.

About This Calendar

This calendar gives you a preview of upcoming programs. It is organized chronologically and by program type. The “big ideas” are called out in colored boxes, and all programs related to those ideas are marked with a color coded star. We hope you will use this calendar as a way to plan your attendance at the programs you love and to experiment with new ones. More detailed information is available on our website and sent to our members as we get closer to the dates of each program. Whether you choose to explore a theme by attending multiple events related to a Multidisciplinary Project or attend a single event that just can’t be missed, we hope to see you this winter!

All of our programs depend on financial support from memberships and donations. Please consider becoming a member, by enrolling, making a donation or contributing through any of our signature fundraising events: Casino Royale (February), Wine Auction (July) or Bubbly Bash (New Year’s Eve). Volunteering is another wonderful way to support The Center. We have a wide variety of opportunities throughout the year. Please call to inquire about them.

JANUARY Big Idea | Multidisciplinary Project

This project explores travel, tourism and the American road trip through visual arts, theatre, films and lectures.

EXHIBITION on view through Feb 15 at the Center in Ketchum. Free and open to the public.

Through Feb 15, 2014 The road trip has been around for centuries, from trips throughout the Mediterranean geared to ancient Roman aristocrats to package tours of the Holy Land for Medieval pilgrims. Despite this long history, the birth of the tourism industry as we know it today emerged in the 19th century with the development of railroads and steamships, which offered relatively easy, inexpensive travel to a growing middle class. In the United States, railroads fed a boom in tourism and led to the development of destination resorts like Sun Valley. But U.S. tourism is probably best defined by the road trip, the classic American vacation that has sent countless travelers out onto highways visiting National Parks, historic sites and cultural destinations. In a country with huge regional variation, the road trip gives us the opportunity to get to know our nation in a deeper way, to reaffirm our identities as American. And while we travel to broaden our horizons, ultimately we return home knowing a little bit more about ourselves and our place in the world.

SPECIAL EVENT: Downton Abbey Watching Party T Kick off season 4 of Downton Abbey at the Liberty. Dress up as your favorite character. Our partners from Idaho Public Television will be present to offer behind the scenes insight and fun giveaways… then settle in for two hours of Downton on the big screen. FREE FILM SCREENING: A Room with a View See the classic Merchant Ivory film as a part of Wish You Were Here.

ADULT CLASS: Beginning Encaustics: 3 Weeks of Wax with Alison Higdon R This class is perfect for those new to, or those who are interested in, furthering their exploration in the ancient art of encaustics. Students will be introduced to the basics of painting in molten beeswax through many demonstrations covering a wide variety of application techniques.

FREE Junior Patrons Circle (JPC) Reception Join the Junior Patrons Circle for drinks, an exhibition tour and to learn more about the JPC and how you can get involved. All are welcome.

FREE LECTURE: Elliot Anderson Wish You Were Here! artist Elliot Anderson will discuss the links between the history of American landscape painting, tourism and photography in his Average Landscapes project.

«FREE LECTURE: Best Trip Ever! In Six Minutes or Less! Enjoy an evening of short presentations by local travelers. Our guests will share their favorite destinations in twenty slides and only six minutes!

ADULT CLASS: The Business of Art: Website and Email Essentials R The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and the Wood River Valley Studio Tour invite local artists to attend three artist education workshops. This first workshop will cover how to effectively communicate and market by email, as well as optimize your online presence.

Sharon Payne Bolton R Join multimedia artist Sharon Payne Bolton as she guides students through the process of creating Artist Travel Books. Learn bookbinding and collage techniques while also documenting your past travels. LECTURE SERIES: Ian Frazier on Travel T Frazier is a writer and humorist for The New Yorker and is the author of the acclaimed Travels in Siberia. Other non-fiction works include Great Plains, Family, and On the Rez. FREE FAMILY DAY: Wish You Were Here! Postcard Printmaking Families will tour the gallery and create one-of-a-kind postcards using basic printmaking techniques.

Curator of Western American History at the Huntington Library, Peter Blodgett will discuss the role of the transcontinental railroad in promoting tourism in the American West.

Sandra Hofferber, the Community Library’s Regional History Librarian, will join us to share the history of the railroad in Sun Valley.

Feb 21–May 24, 2014 In 2011, the staff at the popular professional networking site LinkedIn surveyed its members and found the number one word they used to describe themselves was “creative.” They ran the survey in 2012 and came up with the same answer. We associate the word “creativity” with the arts. But obviously workers across the economic spectrum find that creativity is an essential part of what they do. What does it mean to be creative? How do different kinds of workers, from musicians to software developers to farmers, integrate creativity into their work? And how has technology boosted (or stifled) our ability to think and perform creatively? This multidisciplinary project considers the connection between work and creativity and the impact of that connection on the American workplace through dance, theater, lectures, films and a visual arts exhibition.

This second workshop will cover the ins and outs of social media and how social media marketing techniques can help you achieve your objectives.

FREE LECTURE: Betty Merken Betty Merken is a painter, printmaker and an architectural colorist. Join her as she reflects on her exciting and groundbreaking work with color in Italy. Her work is represented locally by Gilman Contemporary Gallery.

Demystifying Color with Betty Merken R Join Master Artist and Colorist Betty Merken for this exciting and jam-packed, hands-on workshop as she guides you through understanding the spectrum and learning to use color powerfully and effectively.

11« FILM SCREENING: Objectified T

As a part of Creativity and Work this documentary details our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets.

13« EXHIBITION:

Vita Brevis Press: Printmaking and Collaboration Mar 13–Jul 4 (Hailey) What is a master printer? How do printers work with artists to create prints? This exhibition traces the collaborative partnership between master printers and artists through prints made at Jen Galpin’s Vita Brevis Press, a workshop in Hailey. In a ddition to Galpin, participating artists include Kate Browning, Margery Friedlander, Abby Grosvenor, Annie May and Gay Bawa Odmark.

This third workshop will cover the important symbiotic business relationship between artists and dealers and how to achieve successful collaboration.

20«FREE Evening Exhibition Tour*—Creativity and Work 20 FILM SCREENING: Rising from Ashes T

As the spring classics bike season gets underway, The Center is screening a documentary about cycling legend Jock Boyer’s move to Rwanda to help genocide survivors pursue their dream of creating a national cycling team.

CONCERT: Le Vent du Nord T One of Quebec’s finest traditional AND progressive folk groups, Le Vent du Nord goes from foot stomping dance tunes featuring fiddles, hurdy-gurdy, guitar, bouzouki, accordion and more, to haunting a cappella melodies without skipping a beat.

24–28 KIDS CLASS: Spring Break Camp R

Students will explore a variety of art techniques and develop skills in drawing, surface design and sculpture. Morning session is for 1st–3rd grade, afternoon session is for 4th & 5th.

Students will learn the basics of crochet to design and complete a yarn bomb in the community, creating art installations that bring color and texture to public places using yarns and fibers.

Design Thinking with Bobby Hughes R Join senior designer and innovation consultant Bobby Hughes in an exploration of design, collaboration and communication.

ADULT CLASS: Sipping and Sketching with Bob Dix R Join beloved local art teacher Bob Dix as he guides students through the creative process via drawing. This class is just as perfect for the artist looking to have some fun as it for the person who hasn’t participated in art since grade school. Students will have weekly drawing projects accompanied by a glass of wine and good company.

The husband and wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America’s most important designers. As a part of Creativity and Work, this film shows the personal lives and influences of the Eames on everything from furniture to photography, interiors and graphics.

Creativity and Work: Explore the Art of Fingerprinting Families will tour the gallery and tap into their own creativity during this fun art making experience.

CONCERT: Jake Shimabukuro T Shimabukuro is a ukulele virtuoso and composer known for his fast and complex finger work. His music combines elements of jazz, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass, classical, folk, and flamenco.

FILM SCREENING: No T In 1988, the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet bowed to international pressure and called for a referendum on his presidency to vote YES or NO to extending his rule for another eight years. A brash young ad executive was persuaded to lead the NO campaign using the tools of modern advertising.
