Semen-filled balloons thrown on us in name of Holi, allege Delhi college students

New Delhi: Students of a women’s college in south Delhi have alleged that some miscreants have been harassing them in the name of the festival of Holi by throwing at them balloons filled with semen instead of water and colours. The incident came to light when one of the students of Lady Shri Ram College reported that a balloon “filled with liquid” was thrown on her and “it dried white” on her black leggings. Scroll reported that the girl was later told by her friend that the balloon was filled not with water but with semen. Following this, the women development cell of the college held a meeting with

at least 40 students. Authorities discovered during the meeting that the experience of the student was not an isolated one. at least

three students reported that they were hit by balloons which were filled with what they suspect to be semen. Though no police

Uproar in Bihar Assembly over Muzaffarpur incident

Patna: The Bihar Assembly was plunged into turmoil over the Muzaffarpur incident on the third day of the Budget session on Wednesday and the proceedings were adjourned soon after commencement till 2 pm. RJD MLAs rushed into the well as soon as Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary came to the House and raised slogans against the NDA government over the incident in which nine children were run over and killed by a vehicle allegedly driven by a BJP leader. RJD MLAs kept raising slogans accusing the ruling coalition of having tried to shield the accused, who surrendered before police early Wednesday and demanded an apology from

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi. Amid the din, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 pm. The leader of opposition Tejashwi Yadav said, “Whatever we have been saying about the Muzaffarpur incident is turning out to be true. We have been stating from the very beginning that the accused is a BJP leader. The BJP denied it and later admitted our charge and

suspended him from the party”. He said, “Even the suspension was a mere eyewash. What did the suspension for six years imply? Would they re-induct the man accused of such a heinous crime after a period? “We maintain that the BJP leader was drunk, a fact that this government, with its tall claims about prohibition, is wary of admitting. He has surrendered now as blood tests will not be able to ascertain any alcohol content after so many hours”, Yadav said. Manoj Baitha, a district -level BJP worker from Sitamarhi, who was suspended from the party after the incident and the outcry, surrendered at the official residence of Muzaffarpur SSP.

Opec’s new gambit has poor odds of success

Saudi Arabia and Russia don’t make for natural partners. Their often conflicting agendas in West Asia bear testament to that. But economic interests are a powerful motivator. The two oil-driven economies have cooperated closely on oil production cuts since the beginning of 2017. They are now preparing to go further. Last week, Suhail al-Mazrouei, president of the Saudi Arabia-dominated Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec), said the body is working on a plan to structure a formal alliance with 10 other petro-states, Russia being the most prominent among them. If they can pull it off, it will be the most significant restructuring of oil producers since Opec’s formation in 1960. It might not, however, be enough to achieve its goal: holding on to an eroding dominance in the face of the US shale challenge. The 2017 production-cut deal between Opec and the other petro-states has held the line. Compliance has been reasonably good, price volatility as per the CBOE Crude Oil Volatility Index the lowest since 2014, and price levels have been high enough— approaching $70 per barrel—for investors to be bullish. The deal has now been extended to the end of 2018. But a year’s gains are not proof of future success. Several obstacles remain. First, there is still a long road ahead. The deal has targeted a reduction in crude oversupply to its five-year target. There are still 74 million barrels to go for this. This will not be achieved in 2018. Little wonder Saudi Arabia and Russia signalled last month that the production-cut deal may very well continue into 2019. However, the longer such a deal is in place, the higher the odds that compliance will break down. Bloomberg notes that non-Opec compliance has started slipping this year. The track record of the non-Opec bloc’s leader, Russia, is not anything to write home about either. In 1998, the downturn following the 11 September 2001 attack, and 2008, it had been involved in production-cut deals with Opec. It failed to follow through each time. The second obstacle—a mismatch between Saudi Arabia and Russia’s compulsions—follows from this. Together, they account for over 40% of global crude supply and are by some distance the most important actors in the deal. True, their relationship has strengthened considerably over the past year, capped by Saudi Arabia’s king, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, visiting Russia late last year. But Russia needs lower price levels than Saudi Arabia—which would prefer pricier crude given that it is listing state-owned oil behemoth Saudi Aramco later this year—to keep the fiscal home fires burning. Saudi Arabia is also in it for the long haul. Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the power behind the throne, will need high crude prices to backstop his ambitious political and economic reform agenda. For that matter, how compliant will future Aramco stakeholders be when it comes to production cuts? Russia, on the other hand, will be sorely tempted once winter sets in and Euro- - Kapilkumar M. Priya Prakash Varrier Has Found Her Instagram Caption Mojo

New Delhi : We all know Priya Prakash Varrier as the girl who shot to fame overnight thanks to a video clip of her from her upcoming film Oru Adaar Love. Even ahead of the release of her debut film, Priya Prakash Varrier became an internet sensation thanks to a wink aimed at her co-star in the song Manikya Malaraya Poovi from the film. With thousands of memes and an almost instant blue tick on Instagram after this clip went viral all over social media, Priya’s became a face known to millions (currently 5 million and counting on Instagram) - and sooner than she had perhaps imagined. We had observed Priya’s style via her Instagram pictures only a few weeks ago - and Priya was refreshingly unstyled and dressed as any other young woman her age would (google says she’s only 18). Not only was her style her own and as organic as can be, but even Priya’s posts on social media seemed limited to casual posts with her friends and a few posts here and there to promote her film. But the quick surge of popularity on social media seems to have made Priya more adept in the art of social media.

Anushka Sharma deserves praise for taking on genre that A-list stars shy away from, with Pari New Delhi : Amitabh Bachchan has featured in two while Dharmendra has acted in just one, that too as a guest appearance. Vinod Khanna has none to his credit while superstar Rajesh Khanna, despite his romantic image, took a bold step by signing two such movies during his salad days. The same holds true for the Khans. Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have just one against their name while Salman Khan has none. That more or less sumps up the lackadaisical attitude of superstars towards the horror genre. Pari, scheduled to hit theatres this Friday on 2 March, starring Anushka Sharma, is a much needed attempt by an A-lister to give this genre a booster shot. It also means that all is not lost and there is still hope. The step-motherly

treatment that has been meted out to horror films by Bollywood superstars over the years is nothing new and the practice has been there since ages. Ashok Kumar, even after the mega success of Mahal, never opted for another horror film and Dilip Kumar followed suit. Under the baton of Bimal Roy, Dilip Kumar gave a super hit in Madhumati but preferred doing tragic roles more. Amitabh Bachchan’s

Hum Kaun Hai was an extremely bad copy of The Others. Rajesh Khanna, at the peak of his career, gave consent to working in the Danny directed Phir Wahi Raat and then again appeared in Woh Phir Aayegi. Talaash, Paheli and Suryavanshi were more on the supernatural side and of the three, the Salman Khan starrer evoked more laughter than the desired purpose. Salman, while interacting

with media during the run up to the release of Sultan, had clearly stated that the horror genre scares him and he would rather refrain from horror and sex. The bottom line is when it comes to horror, the superstars fare poorly. So what is it that discourages the sultans of box office from dabbling in a genre that also remains the most profitable genre vis-àvis the cost of production. One look at the horror films of this country and the straightaway notion that one assembles in mind is of semi-porn flicks. So deep has been the imprint, thanks to the house of Ramsays horror films that it is almost indelible. The safe bet attitude of stars who are always on hunt for films that can project their clean image and have the potential to appeal to the whole family keep such films at bay.

Long kryptonite to superheroes, Sridevi used to call me ‘laddoo’: Rani Mukerji remembers her ‘maa’ the Oscars begin to relent Rani Mukerji remembers

Mumbai : Kangana Ranaut revealed that patriotism is a must-have trait in her man. the Queen actress was asked on a chat show about what qualities she would want in her dream boyfriend, and she said that it would be a deal-breaker for her if he was not patriotic. “I love my country. I will break up if my boyfriend is not patriotic. If he can’t be dedicated towards his motherland, I don’t think he would be dedicated to me,” Kangana said. If the words of the actress at an event earlier this month are anything to go by, she may have already found the man

of her dreams. Kangana had revealed that she would get married “soon”. “Please give me a deadline till next February,” she had said. On the work front, Kangana is currently busy filming her period drama, Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi, which is based on the life of Rani Laxmibai. The film, directed by Krish, was supposed to hit the screens in April but has been delayed due to the heavy VFX required. Buzz is that Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi will now release in August, although there is no official confirmation from the makers.

New York : Aside from the posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight”) and best animated film for “The Incredibles,” no superhero film has ever penetrated the top categories of the Academy Awards. Though regular honorees for their bombastic visual effects or thunderous, wall-to-wall sound, comic-book movies have been denied the upper reaches of achievement. Marvel Studios — one of the most dominant popculture juggernauts the movies have ever seen — hasn’t won a single Academy Award. But there are signs that the deep freeze for superheroes is thawing. “Logan,” James Mangold’s acclaimed final chapter of Wolverine, the long-clawed “X-Men” character played by Hugh Jackman, is nominated for best adapted screenplay at Sunday’s awards. The nod, which Mangold shares with co-writers Michael Green and Scott Frank, is the first screenplay nomination for a superhero film. That could be read as a sign that the film academy is finally starting to give in to the era’s most bankable

her ‘maa’ Sridevi, who died suddenly on Saturday. Rani says that the Bollywood icon used to call her ‘laddoo’ affectionately and was looking forward to watching Rani’s new film, Hichki.

box-office force. Last year, “Deadpool” seemingly came just shy of scaling the Dolby Theatre walls after a quixotic awards campaign netted the hyperviolent and hyper-verbal R-rated film two Golden Globe nominations. This year, Patty Jenkins’ female empowerment blockbuster “Wonder Woman” was considered a definite contender but came up short despite a nod from the Producers Guild. A tide may be turning just as the sensation and acclaim of Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther” has positioned the Marvel release to be

a potential heavyweight at next year’s Academy Awards. A decade after Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” was denied a best picture nomination — an omission that sparked the academy’s expansion of the best picture field from five films to up to ten — “Black Panther” is poised to score the first bestpicture nod for a superhero film, not to mention potentially a host of other categories including directing, costume design, visual effects, production design, score and, maybe, Michael B. Jordan as supporting actor.

New Delhi :Rani Mukerji has not yet come to terms with Sridevi’s death. The Bollywood icon died suddenly on Saturday in Dubai, where she was attending her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding. The official cause of death was drowning. Just a few days before leaving for Dubai, Sridevi expressed her excitement for Rani’s upcoming film, Hichki. “The day, the time I got to know that she’s passed away, it was the most shocking and tragic thing for me to hear. I still can’t believe that we are talking about her demise. It feels surreal to talk about her in the past tense because we never expected this,” said Rani. “The love

she had for me was so tremendous and intense that I feel somewhere I have lost a guiding light in my life. She has been my inspiration personally and professionally,” she added. Like many of her Bollywood contemporaries, Rani also considers Sridevi to be a massive influence. Sridevi redefined the role of women in Bollywood in the ‘80s and ‘90s. “Sriji has been my favourite since my childhood. She knew me as a kid because I used to go in my school uniform and bag and watch her shoot. She worked in one of the productions of my uncle, Shomu Mukherjee. She remembered me

as that kid,” said Rani. She remembers how the screen icon used to call her ‘laddoo’ affectionately. “She used to call me laddoo; she would say, ‘Arre my laddoo’ each time I met her and I am going to miss that,” she said. “I was actually looking forward to show her my film. She called me after seeing the trailer and said, ‘Laddoo, I have to see this movie’. I told her, ‘Yes maa as soon as the movie is ready, I can show it you’,” said Rani, adding, “It is a huge loss not only for the movie industry but also for us as a family who belong to the films. Anybody who departs we feel that sense of loss and for me especially because I had a personal connect with her.”

When you win, the other team is not playing well, says Ravi Shastri slamming critics

India arrived back home after a successful tour of South Africa where they did lose the Test series but came back in tremendous fashion to thump the Proteas in the ODIs and then the T20s. The prolific comeback from 0-2 down in the Tests earned plenty of applause for the Indian side. However, many claimed that the win came against an understrength South Africa side. The hosts were without AB de Villiers for first three ODIs, and then missed the services of Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis thereafter. “This is the biggest problem with our critics. When you win, the other team is not playing well. When you win in Sri Lanka, they are a weak team. When you play South Africa, they are not at their best. Remember, a team is only as good as you allow it to be. It’s as simple as that. No one says the Indian team were not at their best when we lose,” said Shastri. “No Indian says that. When we lose, we lose. Ah, but when another team lose, they were not at their best. I can’t fathom and I don’t have an answer for that. By the way, we are not playing players, we are playing a country so I don’t care what is on offer. I am playing against South Africa. Who plays for South Africa is not my problem,” he said. With eight match wins out of 12, from being 0-2 down in the Test series, Shastri alleged the comeback from akin to Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman in 1974 – the famed “Rumble in the Jungle” which later came to be called as the “greatest sporting event of the 20th century” – where Ali knocked

down an unbeaten Foreman for the knockout. Despite the massive 5-1 win in the ODIs and 2-1 in the T20s, Shastri claimed there were some regrets but he wished to focus on the positives instead. “I’ll be lying if I say there are no regrets. For me, everyday is a learning curve. When you lose, you learn too. What I liked was that the boys stood up and fought. They didn’t allow their shoulders to drop. In fact, they fought harder,” he said. “They reserved the biggest punch for the last. Two zip down and to throw that knockout punch on South Africa in Johannesburg (in third Test) was tremendous. They never recovered from that.

It was like Muhammad Ali v George Foreman in 1974 and he fu****g knocked him out,” he added. India lost the first Test by 72 runs and the second by 135 runs, however, despite the margin on paper, the two teams were largely separate by one session of play. Especially in the second Test, a collapse for India in a session meant doom and a defeat. Post the two defeats, the team management and the players assessed the situation and wanted to go on the attack instead of buckling and going for a draw. They were duely rewarded with a 63 run win and avoided a first-ever clean sweep in South Africa.

Cricketer Mohammad Kaif seems to be hit on social media when it comes to his Twitter posts. He is as active on Twitter as he was for the Indian cricket team in his playing days. Kaif, who was a crucial part of the 2002 NatWest Series final, revealed that he was called a ‘bus driver’ by former England captain Nasser Hussain in the final match of the series. Kaif was holding a Question and Answer session on his Twitter account with his fans. A fan had asked Kaif to recall a memory about sledging by English players during the final in 2002. “@MohammadKaif Hi kaif, what you and Yuvi were talking during Natwest Final ? Was their any sledging from English players ?#AskKaif”, the fan had asked. In the match, England posted a mammoth total of 325/5 riding on fine centuries by Marcus Trescothick and then captain Nasser Hussain. Chasing the total, Sourav Ganguly and Virender

Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh were involved in an unbeaten, match-winning 121run stand when India looked down and out.

Sehwag gave India the start they wanted in the big run-chase. They both stitched together a 106-run partnership. However, the Indian fans were in for a shock when India’s chase was halted after the loss of Ganguly. But as soon as Ganguly departed, the Indian fans’ worst fears came true as the team suffered a collapse and slid from 106/1 to 146/5. Sachin

Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were dismissed cheaply. From 106/1 to 146/5, India were faltering in their chase. Yuvraj and Kaif were the next pair and it was the perfect stage for the batsmen to shine. A 121run partnership between the two, with Yuvraj scoring 69 off 63 balls and Kaif remaining unbeaten on 87, steered India to a remarkable victory.

Emotional Ben Stokes says he is privileged to play for England again

An emotional Ben Stokes spoke of his “relief” and “happiness” after leading England to victory in the second ODI against New Zealand. A five-month absence brought about by his arrest on the morning of 25 September has seen the allrounder miss seven ODIs, four T20Is and an Ashes series. A star turn in his second match back with the national side has underlined Stokes’ worth as a player but also what playing for England means to him: “Walking off tonight made me understand how much of a privilege it is to represent your country.” This was Stokes fourth ODI man-of-the-match award in an all-action display of 63 not out with the bat, two for 42 with ball and two run outs in the field. New Zealand were restricted to 223 and their target picked off by six wickets and with 12.1 overs still to go. Facing the press for the first time since the incident on a night out in Bristol, the 26-yearold, who notched his 11th

ODI half-century, spoke openly of an exasperating few months, watching from afar as England lost 4-0 to Australia to relinquish the Ashes. The England and Wales Cricket Board lifted a suspension on Stokes in midJanuary after he was charged with affray following a police investigation but he missed the subsequent one-day series victory over Australia. The 26-year-old eventually joined his teammates in Hamilton on 15 February after indicating in court that he would plead not guilty to the charge, though he played no part in the Trans-Tasman T20 TriSeries. “It was frustrating

to watch the Ashes,” he said. “I went through all the emotions as I would have done playing but there’s not a lot I can change about that now. I’ve been following all the cricket the lads have been playing but what I have to do now is focus on going forward. I want to contribute every time I play for England. .” He did not doubt whether he would play a part this winter, throwing himself into Durham’s pre-season programme along with his own personal training sessions. He even forced his body clock onto Australia time for the start of the Ashes, just in case.

Mumbai: Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg has backed young Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav to be the Indian cricket team’s leading spinner in away Tests. Hogg, himself a Chinaman bowler, mentored Kuldeep during his stint with Indian Premier League (IPL) side Kolkata Knight Riders and said the youngster had the talent and skills to succeed in India’s upcoming tours to England and Australia. In Hogg’s opinion, his protege can, in fact, serve as the team’s lone spinner if needed. “A quality wrist spinner always does well against England. I know it’s hard on Ashwin and Jadeja, and if India can play Ashwin as the all-rounder and squeeze in Kuldeep, it would be great. And if they need just one spinner, I think he is ready

for it. He is not a T20 and ODI specialist, he is the real deal. Throw him in the Tests, I say,” Hogg was quoted. The veteran left arm wrist spinner added that Kuldeep’s ability to put over-spin on the ball makes him a threat in Australian conditions where visiting spinners have had a history of struggle. “In Australia, you need someone with a

lot of over spin, to go with the ability to rip it side-ways too, and that’s the reason behind Nathan Lyon’s success here. Kuldeep can do it.” The Australian veteran also said that he had seen potential of greatness in Kuldeep when he saw him first four years ago. It now pleases him no end to see the way the 23-year-old has progressed over these years.

These girls work for us. Sumit Jamvani was harassing one of them. When we complained against him, the cops took Rs 3,000 from Sumit and let him go. Instead, they arrested Vinod based on Sumit’s complaint. When my girls and I protested, they began thrashing us. They pulled our hair, tore our clothes and manhandled us. There was only one woman constable present. We have handed over an application to the JCP.” Naroda PI Hardevsinh Vaghela said, “Sumit had lodged a complaint against Vinod and Mukesh Mandal for verbally abusing and threatening to kill him. We did not take any money from him.”

Davanagere: With an eye on the upcoming assembly election in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the world's tallest statue of Sardar Vallabhai Patel in Gujarat will be a tribute to the sweat and toil of millions of Indian farmers. "The Sardar Vallabhai Patel's statue (182 metres high), known as the Statue of Unity, being built on the river Narmada near Vadodara in Gujarat, is double the size of Statue of Liberty (93 metres) in New York," Modi said addressing a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally in this textile town, about 260 kilometres northwest of Bengaluru. Metal pieces from farmers of six lakh villages across the country were collected and melted to make the Patel statue as the tallest in the world, Modi told thousands of farmers attending the rally. The prime minister draped a green shawl, a symbol and common dress-code of the farming community in the state, during his 30-minute address. The rally also marked the 75th birthday of the BJP's chief ministerial candidate Yeddyurappa, who is also the party's state

‘Gokul global university is bjp’s reward for rajput for rajya sabha polls support’

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2018, that proposed a private university Gokul Global University, was passed in Gujarat assembly amidst protests by Congress MLAs in the house. The opposition alleged that BJP introduced the bill to reward Congress turncoat Balwantsinh Rajput for supporting the party in the Rajya Sabha election. Congress MLAs lashed out at the state government over the bill, alleging poor infrastructure in private and government universities in Gujarat. Amid protests by the opposition, BJP succeeded in passing the bill with a majority in the house. The bill proposed a private university named Gokul Global University in Sidhpur town of Patan. The university is owned by Gokul Foundation, promoted by Rajput. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Paresh Dhanani alleged: “The university is proposed because government wants

to bribe the representatives of people by extending them government support. Central University of Gujarat is running in rented premises. Why does not Gujarat government allot land to them in Gandhinagar if they are really concerned about the education?” Opposing the bill, Congress MLA Virji Thumar said: “It seems that the government brought this bill to reward him for Rajya Sabha polls. The quality of education in the state’s private universities

is deteriorating despite hefty fees charged from the students. The common man is being exploited. Government must ensure recruitments in the educational institutes first and then look at more universities.” Dasada MLA Naushad Solanki alleged the bill was passed to add just one more varsity to the state while Patan MLA Kirit Patel said that government must review the condition of the existing private universities.

state to donate a handful of rice, to contribute to the development of a new Karnataka, to Yeddyurappa during his tour across the state in March," he said. The foundation for the statue was laid in 2013 by Modi, who was then Gujarat chief minister. The statue is being built

15 Congress MLAs Suspended, 50 Others Walkout From Gujarat Assembly

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi today suspended around 15 Congress MLAs for a day after they sat in the well and shouted slogans against the ruling BJP over VAT being charged on fuel by the state government. Besides these, another Congress MLA was suspended for two days by the Speaker. The exact number of MLAs suspended from the Assembly for a day was not immediately clear. Following the suspension and eviction, nearly 50 other Congress MLAs staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly. Earlier during the Question Hour, Congress MLA Vimal Chudasama sought details about the Value Added Tax (VAT) being charged on petrol and diesel by the BJP government. The MLA also asked if the government plans to reduce the taxes on fuel to give relief to the people. In his reply, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said the government charges 20 percent VAT on fuel. He then compared Congressruled states like Punjab and Karnataka with Gujarat and claimed both these states charge 28 and 30 percent tax respectively is much higher than Gujarat. Irked by the comparison, Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani asked Patel to stick to Gujarat and have a debate on it. When Speaker Trivedi stopped him from making further comments, all Congress MLAs started shouting slogans against the BJP government. As around 15 Congress MLAs sat in the well, the Speaker first suspended them for the day and called in marshalls to evict them. While the MLAs were walking out of the House, the Speaker took a serious note of Congress’ Unjha MLA Asha Patel’s sloganeering. Speaker Trivedi termed the words “BJP Hooligans” said by Asha Patel derogatory and suspended her for two days.

by Indian infrastructure company Larsen and Toubro, which won the contract for construction and management for about Rs 3,000 crore in 2014. The Union Budget for 2014-15 announced by the Modiled central government had allotted Rs 200 crore for the project.

ministers in the party’s Delhi headquarters, Rupani exudes confidence and points out that those belittling the BJP’s victory in Gujarat Assembly elections in December 2017 are failing to gauge the pulse of the people. “We won that election against immense odds,” he says. “After a long gap, there was a determined attempt by the Congress to push Gujarat into a vortex of sectarian conflicts on caste and communal lines,” he adds, referring to the emergence of caste-based campaigns led by Jignesh Mevani, Alpesh Thakor

and Hardik Patel. “This is a transient phase which has practically blown over,” he says confidently. Rupani, however, does not see any possibility of Mevani emerging as an influential leader such as Kanshi Ram or Mayawati solely on the basis of Dalit assertion. “That is nearly impossible as Dalits and tribals closely identify themselves with the BJP,” he says, adding “We have more Dalits and tribal legislators than our rivals.” Referring to a debate on Dalit welfare in the Assembly, he says, “I gave details of schemes initiated by my government for welfare of Dalits and it caused silence in the camp of our adversaries.” Asked if there was any need for introspection within the party after Gujarat’s election results, which is often described as a moral defeat for the BJP, Rupani says, “We are quite alert to the possibility of attempts to create social divisions by the Congress and others, and we are working on a political project to neutralise it.”

2002, Rahimbhai along with his family of seven, took refuge in a relief colony in Tankaria in Bharuch. Sixteen years later, the 12 feet by 20 feet room that was meant to be a temporary relief camp became his family’s permanent home. The rehabilitation colony at Tankaria established by an NGO, Islamic Relief Committee (IRC), today is home to eight families who were affected in riots of 2002 and migrated from various areas in Vadodara, Kheda and Ahmedabad. “I used to drive a private bus and own a meat shop. We fled from Makdarpura, Vadodara, where we had a house. A representative of IRC brought us here at Tankaria. We paid about Rs 2,000 for an electricity meter in 2002 from whatever money we could take with

electricity connection only in 2005. We have no way of going back to where we were. My house was burnt and my meat shop has been taken over and is being run by someone else,” tells Rahimbhai, who now sells imitation jewellery to earn a living. Struggling for 16 years to to get ownership rights, Rahimbhai says, “We want ownership of the house where we have been living for 16 years now. The children have grown up and are getting married, we cannot go on living in one room. We don’t have any documents that will make us eligible for a loan. We have no option but to live here. We have tried conveying this to the officials of IRC but they never met us in 16 years to discuss transferring the ownership rights.” Currently there are over 3,000 families

“Officials and politicians visit our colony before any election. At times even threaten us to vote else we will be forced to vacate. After all these years we still have no home, we don’t belong anywhere.”
