New Delhi : As the electoral heat reaches its peak in Karnataka, both BJP and Congress leaders campaigned across the state. While Rahul Gandhi addressed public meetings in Gajendragarh and Kalaburagi, BJP released its poll manifesto earlier in the day. BJP chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa promised to re-introduce the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation Bill 2012 if the party came to power in the assembly elections slated for next week. At the inauguration of the election manifesto, Yeddyurappa stressed on

the party’s commitment towards the welfare of the farmers and also announced various measures for them in the state. While addressing party workers in Kalaburagi, he took several potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over several issues ranging from crimes against women to Amit Shah’s son’s alleged business expansion. The state is set to go to the polls on May 12 while counting is scheduled for May 15. Congress President addressing the final public meeting of the day once again attacked the government on the

implementation of GST and demonetisation and said the PM placed 'Gabbar Singh' to take money from your pockets and place it in the hands of Nirav Modi. Now he wants that the entire gang of Gabbar Singh which includes Reddy brothers enter Vidhan Sabha. Siddharamiah govt is letting Jihadi elements in the state grow. Do not accept any kind of castebased discrimination: RSS New Delhi : The RSS today said it does not accept any kind of caste-based discrimination and was votary of “One Temple, One Well and One Cremation ground ” for all. In a statement, RSS’ ‘prachar pramukh’ (chief information officer) Arun Kumar said the Sangh has been working towards creating a cohesive society on the basis of love and affection where it wants everyone to live in harmony without any caste based discrimination.“We do not accept any kind of caste based discrimination. Since its inception, the RSS has been votary of ‘one temple,

one well and one cremation ground’ for all,” Kumar said. He also rejected as “baseless and misguiding” the media reports that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat during an internal meeting in Delhi yesterday had said that BJP leaders visiting Dalit homes and eating with them isn’t enough to uplift the community, and the leaders must invite Dalits to their own homes as well. “No such meeting was ever held in Delhi during the last few days where anything about BJP’s Gram Swaraj Abhiyan was said,” Kumar asserted.

Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan do well in ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme: Maneka Gandhi New Delhi : Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi Friday said that Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan have done well in implementation of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme, whereas Kashmir and Bihar have lagged behind in terms of child sex ratio. The Women and Child Development minister made these remarks while addressing a day-long national conference on ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) in New Delhi. “The states that have done best so far are Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab. These were the worst states (when the programme started) and they have gone from zero to hero. These are macho man states where there is a patriarchal system. They were not even expected to do well. Be it

the problem of khaps in Haryana or Punjab’s tandoori chicken culture, they are macho states,” she said. “Whenever a state or its people feel that they are in war or there is a feeling that there is an atmosphere of war, they (people) are usually hesitant in giving

birth to daughters,” the minister said while talking about Kashmir. The campaign also failed in Bihar because the funds never reached the districts and due to frequent transfers of district magistrates in some districts, she added. “The money never reached the districts.

It reached the state and languished in there. It failed in those districts where DMs were changed in every three months. There was no ownership,” Gandhi said. The minister said that for the programme to be a success, we have to to pull together as a nation. “We have to pull together as a nation. If we have porous borders like this and people breaking rules in other state and not doing in the other, we have to do something,” Gandhi said. “In Rajasthan, they exercised strictness under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act but some people crossed over to Madhya Pradesh, got an ultrasound done and got the baby girl aborted,” she added. Launched in January 2015, the BBBP scheme is implemented in 161 districts.

Allocation of Rs 3,000 crore for development of animal husbandry and dairy farming infrasture, besides Rs 1,000 crore for expansion of veterinary services. 2. Congress defamed Hindus, Rahul Gandhi should apologise: Amit Shah

Bhopal : Accusing the Congress of defaming ‘sanatan dharma’ and Hindus, BJP president Amit Shah Friday said Rahul Gandhi should apologise for projecting the concept of “Hindu terror” and dishonouring the country. Citing the acquittal by a Hyderabad court (on April 16) of all five people accused in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case including Swami Aseemanand, Shah said, “The Congress and its president tirelessly talked about Hindu terror in the 2014 elections and defamed Hindu culture and dishonoured India. Rahul Gandhi should apologise to the Hindu community for this.” Shah was addressing party workers from across Madhya Pradesh at the BHEL Dussehra Maidan in Bhopal. He said that the Hyderabad court had stated that the case against the activists was made due to political reasons. “He

(Rahul Gandhi) will not do that (apologise). So we have to take this issue to the masses that the Congress is fuelling lies to divide the society,” he said. Shah accused the Congress of practising “politics of division” and dividing the people on the basis of caste. “After becoming the prime minister, Narendra Modi brought a bill for the backward classes of this country, under which the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) was to get constitutional status. This bill was passed in the Lok Sabha but in the Rajya Sabha, the Congress, including one member of a royal family from MP, created hindrances,” he alleged. He said that former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, who is Rajya Sabha member, raised an objection and demanded that minorities should also be included in this bill.

How to be a decent flyer

A minuscule percentage of people who sit through the safety briefings of airlines will ever have any use for them (the Air France safety video is such a hoot though!). What most flyers could use every time they board, however, is a lesson in basic decency. I set the bar so low that children running down the aisle is not even on my list of annoyances. On long flights, my ideal scenario is to not sit next to someone who appears remotely interesting—that way I have no urge to waste time talking and no shame in asking for two-and-a-half sugars for my coffee or rewinding movies obsessively for missed dialogue. On a recent flight, I was seated next to someone who was impossible to ignore. They got their suitcase down five times during an 18-hour flight. It was to retrieve and then put back a set of items in the same order. I had the aisle seat and since my in-flight lifestyle had to be suspended each time this happened, I thought I might as well pay attention to the proceedings: a zipped pouch of essential oils to address a variety of in-flight needs such as digestion and insomnia was the first to be brought down, eye mask, socks and a change of clothes came next, a book and magazine (these were taken out at different times), hairbrush, medicines. I didn’t think about changing my seat because each time I believed it would be the last. To top this, the person was unable to lift their suitcase. The first time, a co-passenger helped but a flight attendant had to be summoned all the other times. This brings me to point one: Unless old or incapacitated in any way, please travel with luggage you are able to carry yourself. Do not be the person holding up traffic on the aisle because you are unable to hoist your luggage. Almost everyone seems to be afflicted with back problems now—I hope it is not just the Lounge team—so it is unfair to expect other people to shoulder your burden. Funnily, you know, the rest of us packed light to avoid this exact scenario. I am already traumatized by what Wi-Fi and phone calls on Indian flights will lead to but in preparation for that, let’s get into a strict headphone discipline. Plug in the headphones even when you’re going to watch a short video on Instagram. For, can there be anything more terrible than waking up to a cat meow or actor Kangana Ranaut asking paparazzi to leave her alone? No. Some people are just not good at holding on to their drink, even if it is non-alcoholic. You might say I had particularly bad travel luck this time, but on the other leg, I had apple juice all over me, knocked over by the person beside me. In his debut column in Mint this week, on the art of packing, actor Rahul Khanna wrote about how he always carries a fresh set of clothes in his carry-on bag in the event that he spills food on himself mid-flight. I like my hand luggage to be as non-existent as possible so I will certainly never have a change of clothes. With my good karma of rarely dropping things on other people, all I can hope for is that other people don’t drop or spill things on me.

Bollywood - Hollywood When Taapsee Pannu refused to pose for paparazzi

Taapsee Pannu seemed in a bad mood during the screening of the Amitabh Bachchan-Rishi Kapoor starrer 102 Not Out, recently, when she snapped at waiting photographers. The actress, who had just returned from a long flight told them, “Guys, I am very jetlagged. It is 11 pm. I want to go home and sleep, please let me go.” A few photographers were, however, not in the mood to let her pass and kept haranguing her to step out of the car for pictures. “Taapsee then stuck her head out of the car window, told them to click a picture and zoomed off. The paps let her go, because the actress has always been co operative otherwise,” says an eyewitness.

Fast and Furious 9: Vin Diesel promises 'bigger' movie, new premise

Priyanka Chopra takes dig at the 'boys' when asked about her favourite on-screen kiss

In trying not to ruffle any feathers, our Bollywood stars invariably try to be politically correct as far as they can. That’s the reason most of them prefer not taking any names or expressing their honest opinion for tricky questions during media interviews or on the rapid fire round on Karan Johar’s chat show ‘Koffee with Karan.’ And though she lands in trouble occasionally for her comments like for calling Nagaland 'troubled by insurgency', one of the most politically correct actresses is Priyanka Chopra. The internationally famous actress proved that once again in a fun-filled segment for the digital portal Pure Wow. During a Truth or Dare

round, Priyanka was asked who was her all-time favourite castmate from ‘Quantico’ was, which was a piece of cake for her, naming Yasmine Al Massri and Johanna Braddy. And then the tough part, she was asked who her favourite on-screen kiss was, and the actress burst out laughing before she said, “Even if I have one, I can’t tell you.” Not before taking a dig at the lucky ones who have locked lips with her, by saying, “Boys have very fragile egos.” We wonder what Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Jake McLaughlin and some of her other co-stars have to say about it.

Saaho: Makers of Prabhas starrer spend 90 crore on action sequence in Dubai

After blockbuster success of SS Rajamouli's 'Baahubali', audiences are super excited to see Prabhas in his next film. The team is currently shooting in Dubai, UAE and a major action sequence is being worked upon under the skilful supervision of international stunt choreographer Kenny Bates. According to a statement, a whopping Rs. 90 crore is being spent on the action sequence alone. Speaking on the shooting in Dubai and Abu Dhabi later, Prabhas said in the statement, “We are all excited to be shooting in Abu Dhabi - friends in the industry have told me that it’s an incredible filming destination boasting awe-inspiring landscapes, and it is certainly living up to that reputation. I’ve been impressed at the level of support we’ve received from twofour54, the local crews, the fans, and the government, who are all going out of their way to make things as smooth as possible.”

Vin Diesel has teased that the next instalment of the "Fast and Furious" franchise will be "bigger" than its predecessor and might be set in Africa. During an interview on TODAY, the 50-year-old actor confirmed that Justin Lin, who helmed three films in the franchise, will be returning to direct the next two "Fast & Furious" films. "It does get bigger... I just got off the phone with Justin Lin, who is directing 'Fast 9' and 'Fast 10', and I can't tell you how excited he is," Diesel said. Over the years, the "Fast and Furious" films have been set in and explored different countries, including Brazil, UK, Spain, Japan, Mexico and UAE, and Diesel said the next movie might take them to Africa as it has been "long overdue". "We haven't been to Africa, I can tell you that. And we are long overdue," Diesel added. The next "Fast and Furious" film has a released date of April 10, 2020, and core cast of Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson, are expected to be back for it.

Sandra Bullock’s Ryan Reynolds is ‘very sad’ that Blake stalker is dead Lively unfollowed him! Hollywood’s funniest couple are back at it! Blake Lively surprised fans after wiping her Instagram account clean — while simultaneously unfollowing husband Ryan Reynolds — and nobody had a better reaction than the Deadpool star himself! According to reports on JustJared.com, Ryan spoke about the diss during an interview on Smallzy’s Surgery as he promoted the Deadpool sequel.“Yes, she did. I’m very sad about that,” Reynolds quipped to host Smallzy,

adding, “Definitely stinks. It’s a terrible way to find out that I’ve been kicked out of the house, to be honest. Absolutely terrible. I don’t know where rage like that comes from.” When Smallzy remarked that at least Lively and Reynolds’ kids — the pair share daughters James, 3, and Ines, 1 — are too young to be affected by the faux marital strife, Reynolds joked, “That’s true, yeah. ‘Mommy unfollowed Daddy on Instagram.’ My children would just fart and walk away.”

Shotgun Shaadi: Shraddha Kapoor demands changes in the script

A man convicted of stalking Sandra Bullock has killed himself after a police standoff, reports People.com. After a five-hour stand-off with a SWAT personnel, Joshua James Corbett, who was previously convicted of breaking into Sandra Bullocks house in 2014, was found dead inside his home in La Crescenta, California

on Wednesday. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the standoff began after Los Angeles police attempted to serve a warrant at the residence, which resulted in the man barricading himself inside a building in the back of the property. Last May, Corbett, 42, was sentenced to five years, according to the Los Angeles Times.

After Saaho and Stree, actress Shraddha Kapoor will next be shooting for Shotgun Shaadi. As per latest reports, Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha have been signed on for the film which will be helmed by Prashant Singh, who had earlier assisted Aanand L. Rai on many films. According to the sources however, Shraddha has demanded several changes in the script. “Shraddha has been meeting the makers

of the film and has asked them to make a few changes. Once those were made, she asked for some more,” a source said. Reportedly, Sidharth will be seen speaking Bhojpuri in the film and is busy learning the language. Sidharth and Shraddha were last seen together in Ek Villain, which worked for them. Let’s see if Shotgun Shaadi helps revive the careers of the two stars.

me. And that kind of just stuck with us. And then I didn’t really like just Storm—I didn’t feel like that was her name. So then it became Stormi.” The new mom and makeup mogul shared several photos on Instagram from the trip, complete with cameos from Stormi and Travis.

The 37-year-old’s backroom staff will be announced in due course, Rangers added. “From the very beginning, talks have been extremely positive and we believe that Steven is the right man to drive Rangers forward,” Rangers chairman Dave King said. “He was extremely impressive throughout our negotiations and we are convinced he has the necessary knowledge and temperament to lead the club to the success we all desire.”

Neeraj Chopra can throw close to 90m this year: world champion Johannes Vetter

The list of Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra’s admirers has grown with reigning world champion Johannes Vetter predicting a bright future for the Commonwealth Games gold medallist. After winning gold at Gold Coast Games with his second career-best throw of 86.47m, the 20-year-old Neeraj has said that he would like to join the ’90m club’ soon. “He (Neeraj) is really young. He is able to throw between 88 and 90m, this year of course,” Vetter, who has a personal best of 94.44m, was quoted as saying by the ‘Olympic Channel’. Neeraj is competing against Vetter in the season-opening leg of the Diamond League series in Doha. The star-studded field includes Olympic champion Thomas Rohler and Rio Olympics silver medallist Julius Yego of Kenya, besides Vetter. Neeraj’s personal best stands at 86.48m, that won him gold at the U-20 World Championships in 2016 in Bydgoszcz (Poland), which is also the existing world junior record. Only 18 athletes have ever thrown over 90m, including six who are still in action — Yego, Vetter, Rohler, Tero Pitkomaki, Andreas Hoffman and Asian record holder Chao Tsun Cheng. However, none of these stars had inched past 80m in their teens — a fact that is not lost on Yego. “It’s possible (for Neeraj to throw 90m). He is a great talent and has a great, bright future. He has the qualities of becoming an elite thrower. He already holds the world junior record. He is way ahead of me,” said Yego. If Neeraj, who now trains under world record holder Uwe Hohn, hits 90m, he would be the youngest thrower to go past the javelin gold standard.

West Ham striker Andy Carroll fined for leaving bench during Manchester City match

Mumbai: West Ham United striker Andy Carroll has been fined by manager David Moyes for his “unacceptable” decision to leave the bench during the club’s 4-1 Premier League defeat by Manchester City last weekend. Carroll, an unused substitute in the match, headed down the tunnel at the London Stadium before the end of the match. Moyes said the striker had since apologised to him and the players for his behaviour.

“I was really disappointed in Andy. I don’t believe there was any excuse for what he did. He has been fined but he has apologised, both to me and the players, and he understands it was wrong,” Moyes wrote in his column in the Evening Standard. “The following day we had a discussion in the office at Rush Green. Mumbai : Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure is leaving Manchester City and will get a fitting send-off in the Premier League champions’ final home game against Brighton next week, manager Pep Guardiola said on Friday. An instrumental figure in recent years, the 34-year-old has played a bit-part role this season and is out of contract at the end of the campaign. “Yaya is not going to stay next season,” Guardiola told reporters ahead of City’s home game against Huddersfield Town on Sunday. “The Brighton game, we will give him what he deserves. One of the most beautiful farewells a player can receive. We will be focused on winning for Yaya and we are going to try to win it for him,” added the Spaniard. City play Brighton at the Etihad on Wednesday before their final match at Southampton. Toure joined City from Barcelona, when Guardiola was in charge there, in 2010

and missed a part of last season following a public spat between his agent Dimitri Seluk and the Spaniard. The player, who will be 35 this month, then issued a public apology and was welcomed back into the fold, with a one-year contract extension. He has made 229 Premier League appearances over the eight years, but only nine this season, winning two titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups with City. “We have amazing facilities but the club became what they did because of the players. Yaya Toure came here when this idea for the club started, and what we are in this moment is thanks to what this guy has done,” said Guardiola. “We cannot forget the period from (former managers) Roberto Mancini, and especially Manuel Pellegrini, Yaya was the key, key player. “That’s why we are delighted to prepare for Sunday’s game, for our celebration, and after for Yaya.”

Neymar back in France to continue recovery from injury

Mumbai: Two months after undergoing surgery on a fractured foot, Neymar has arrived back in France to continue his rehabilitation. After landing at the small airport of Le Bourget at about noon Friday, the Brazil star went to his home on the outskirts of Paris. The Paris Saint-Germain striker had been recovering in Brazil after having surgery in March on a cracked fifth metatarsal in his right foot. He is hoping to be ready for the World Cup in Russia and it’s unlikely he will play again with PSG before the end of the season. PSG’s

next league game is due to be played on Friday night at Amiens. The French champions then take on third-division side Les Herbiers in the French Cup final at the Stade de France next week. They have two more league matches, at home against Rennes on May 12 and away at Caen on the 19th. PSG sealed the league title last month with five games to spare but has delayed celebrations until the Rennes match at the Parc des Princes, making sure Neymar could attend the party in front of home fans. Neymar said last month he

would have his last post-surgery medical exam on May 17, adding that he could be available for Brazil’s training sessions that start May 21 near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s first game is on June 17 against Switzerland. Neymar, who has started walking without clutches once again only recently, was injured playing against Marseille on Feb. 25. In his first season with PSG, he scored 19 league goals in 20 games after joining from Barcelona for a world-record fee of 222 million euros ($260 million).

India's services sector activities improve in April

New Delhi: India's services sector continued to improve in April, mainly spurred by increased business activities, and job-creation accelerated at the fastest pace in more than seven years, a monthly survey said on Fridayy. With growth in new orders and easing inflationary pressures also helping in improved demand conditions, the Nikkei India Services Business Activity Index climbed to 51.4 in April from 50.3 in March. "This signalled a faster expansion in output at Indian service firms than in the prior month," the survey report said. According to the report, the country's service sector continued to improve

"Reflecting improvements in demand conditions, jobcreation accelerated to the sharpest since March 2011," it added. Aashna Dodhia, Economist at IHS Markit, said it was encouraging to see the Indian service economy report a positive start in the April quarter, with output growth gaining momentum as demand conditions improve. "India's overall economy also saw price pressures moderating further, with input and output charge inflation registering at the slowest since September 2017 and June 2017, respectively.

necessary evil, but maybe they don't have to be. Plenty of painless alternatives are in the place. Newer technologies are coming up to seek better means of managing pain. According the research total number of people suffering diabetic in India at present is around 10 crore and 25 % of these patients depend on insulin especially children. E-CoolSenseis India’s first local anesthetic device which provides pain relief and prevents the skin from being harmed and burned during the injection. For decades, drawing blood has meant a

healthcare professional inserts a long needle into a vein or lances a fingertip – both of which are laborious and painful. With E-CoolSense, people can experience a virtually painless and simple process. E-CoolSense is a Pain numbing application device which is a developed afteryears of extensive R&D by the parent company CoolSense LTD. A revolutionary, though simple, hand-held device,it anesthetizes the site of injections by a Cryo system with no chemicals and no after effects.

Gujarat: Activist objects to university auctioning poultry to traders Rajkot : CLAIMING THAT Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had barred auctioning of animals and poultry raised at farms run by state government, an animal rights activist has objected to the Junagadh Agricultural University’s (JAU) decision to auction poultry used for experimental purpose. The varsity, however, said that it was well within its power to do so, even though it added that it will “go slow” on such matters from now. Last month, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry at JAU auctioned 277 broilers through two tenders. However, Rajendra Shah, director of Animal Welfare Board, on April 27 wrote to JAU Vice-Chancellor Arvind Pathak raising objections to the auctions. Stating that he has received a complaint of alleged under-bidding from one Bhavesh Shah of Rajkot who took part in the auctioning, Rajendra Shah wrote, “This is a serious matter…You can’t make delivery of these birds as it could amount to defiance of order of the Chief Minister.” Shah, who is also trustee of Jivdayaghar, a Rajkot-based animal rights organisation, referred to a letter he had written to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and the purported response of the Chief Minister’s Office to it, banning auction of animals and birds at state government-run farms. The letter, which Shah claimed, was sent by the CMO to principal secretary of agriculture, farmers’ welfare and cooperation department of the state government directed the department to stop auction of all animals and birds at its farms and instead hand them over to nearby panjarapoles. The purported letter from the CMO was written on March 15 this year and its copy was posted to Rajendra Shah. The Indian Express could not independently ascertain the veracity of the letter. Shah also alleged that the JAU had shown “undue haste” in disposing of broilers. “The varsity showed alacrity in disposing of the bird at lower than market rates while showing no respect to the CM’s order.

Washington : President Donald Trump on Friday said the date and location have been set for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which would be announced soon, and hinted at progress in winning the release of three Americans held in North Korea. The White House has said the first meeting between sitting US and North Korean leaders could take place in the coming weeks. Trump is expected to push for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. “We’re having very substantive talks with North Korea and a lot of things have already happened with respect to the (US) hostages. I think you’re going to see very good things,” Trump told reporters. The US government is looking into reports that three Americans arrested in recent

years in North Korea had recently been relocated from a labor camp to a hotel near Pyongyang, as expectations grow that they will be released before the summit. Trump said this week that the demilitarized zone, or DMZ, between North and South Korea would be an excellent venue for the planned summit, but that Singapore was also a possible site. The Peace House at the DMZ was the venue for a meeting last month between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in. Trump also told reporters on Friday that he was not considering reducing the US military’s presence in South Korea as part of the negotiations. “Troops are not on the table,” he said before a flight to Dallas, Texas, where he will address the National Rifle Association.

China, US reach ‘agreements’ on some eco, trade issues to avert trade war of Enforcement Directorate for initiating action under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act-2002 in big seizures of IMFL, involving commission of scheduled offences”. It is to be noted that “scheduled offences” are cases registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that could initiate a case of attachment of properties under the money laundering Act by the Enforcement Directorate. According to the order, although offences under Gujarat Prohibition Act of 1949 do not fall under “schedule offences”, there are a number of offences that are “often included in the Indian

Penal Code (related to cheating and forgery) that are often committed by bootleggers in procuring IMFL from distilleries located in other states and importing the same into Gujarat”. The three-page order states that “it is incumbent on the police authorities to move the Enforcement Directorate accordingly if there exist sufficient grounds to believe that bootlegging activity is being carried out by committing scheduled offences resulting in the accused acquiring substantial proceeds of the crime”. In legal terms, “proceeds of crimes” refers to properties acquired through “scheduled offences”.

According to Surat Diamond Association, Ghanshyam Paladiya shut his diamond polishing factory in Surat’s Katargam area and went in-communicado four days ago. At least 200 workers, who are employed at his unit, have reportedly not received their salaries. Surat Diamond Association president Babubhai Gujarati said, “We have received complaint from diamond traders about this merchant who has been defaulting payment and also not giving salaries to diamond polishers. We don’t know exact the figure of his dues, but we assume that it would

run in crores of rupees. We have tried to contact his family members but they are also unavailable, and his house is also locked. We are putting all our efforts to bring him back and try to sort out the issues.” According to sources, Paladiya hails from Palitana taluka in Bhavnagar district. He had two offices — at Mahidharpura and Varachha. “Paladiya was a veteran trader, but not among the big shots in the industry. He was doing polishing work of diamonds below 1 carat,” said chairman of Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (Gujarat region) Dinesh Navadia. “The diamond workers who had lost their salaries will easily get job in other factories,” he added. No one has filed a complaint against Paladiya with the police.

Beijing : China and the US have reached “agreements” on some of the issues but both sides were still “very divided” on several others during the economic and trade talks held here to end the tariff spat between the two major trading partners, according to a media report today. The US delegation, led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is also President Donald Trump’s special envoy and Chinese side, led by Vice Premier Liu He, also a member of Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met yesterday and today, and “agreed to set up a work mechanism to keep close communication”. A trade spat between the top two economies of the world began last month with Trump imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports into

the US from China, which also retaliated by imposing additional tariffs worth about USD three billion on 128 US products. The two countries have not yet implemented their tariff increases to reach a negotiated settlement. “China and the US reached agreements on some issues in their economic and trade consultations in Beijing from Thursday to Friday,” the state-run Xinhua news agency said in a brief report. They have agreed to set up a work mechanism to keep close communication, it added. The US goods and services trade with China totalled to an estimated USD 648.2 billion in 2016 in which China had a lion’s share with about USD 478.9 billion exports. The US exports to China stood at USD 169.3 billion, according to US trade figures.

Beijing : President Xi Jinping today defended as “totally correct” the ruling Communist Party’s adherence to Karl Marx’s theory of socialism for 97 years, saying it has profoundly changed China from the “sick man of Asia” to the secondlargest economy of the world. Marxism has strong influence in China where students begin learning the theories of Marx and Lenin in middle school. China, the world’s second-largest economy after the US, has seen decades of market-driven growth. “There might be setbacks in the development of socialism in the world, but the overall trend for human society development has never changed, and it will never change,” Xi told a special function here organised to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of Marx. “Marxism has not only profoundly changed the world, but

also China,” the President said. Marxism had pointed out the direction forward, offering a brand-new choice for the Chinese people in their struggle to survive, and setting the scene for the birth of the CPC, Xi said. Since the CPC’s birth, it has combined the fundamental principles of Marxism with the reality of Chinese revolution and construction, transforming the Chinese nation from “the sick man of East Asia” to the one who has stood up by uniting and leading the people through the long-term struggle, he said “This tremendous transformation serves as castiron proof that only through socialism can we save China,” Xi said. Founded in 1921, the CPC headed by Mao Zedong came to power after a prolonged violent national liberation struggle in 1949 and remained in power since then in a one-party state.
