With just a week left for the Karnataka Assembly elections, the BJP has intensified its campaign across the state. As part of his third round of campaigning in poll-bound Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Tumakuru on Saturday morning and

launched a scathing attack on the Congress over several issues ranging from poverty to farmers suicides and its alliance with the JDS in Bengaluru. While addressing his second rally in Gadag at 2pm, he continued its tirade against the party, saying that it will soon reduce to a regional

party after the poll results are declared. The PM’s last public meetings will be held at Mangaluru later in the day. BJP chief Amit Shah, on the other hand, is also addressing the public through roadshows in Piriyapattana, Varuna, Chamaraja, Krishnaraja and NR constituencies.

Praising the BJP-led central government's initiatives, PM Modi said 30 crore families have bank accounts now through Jan Dhan Yojana. "We have brought them financial security," he said. "Centre has given money to the state to build houses, but this state government is sleeping. Does it have the right to sleep?" he asked. Further, PM Modi reiterated his promise of providing a home for every family by 2022. "When India celebrates 75 years of Independence, every family will have a home in our country," he said while accusing the incumbent Congress government in the state of not utilising the funds granted by the Centre for building houses.

Disquiet in office of President Kovind over National Film Awards ceremony boycott, I&B invite There is a sense of disquiet in Rashtrapati Bhavan after the unprecedented public spectacle of around 50 award-winners boycotting the National Film Awards because they were told last-minute they would not get the award from President Ram Nath Kovind but from I&B Minister Smriti Irani and her colleague Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. Rashtrapati Bhavan, sources said, is upset because the President’s Secretariat was in touch with the Ministry over the event and, as early as March, had let it be known that the President would spend only an hour at the event and, therefore,

not give away all the awards. “By end March, all discussions about logistics were finalised. It was left to the Ministry to decide how many awards the President would give and who else would

Bill Gates hails India’s expertise in public health, highlights problem in sanitation Washington : Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has hailed India’s expertise in public health but underlined the need for it to do more in the nutrition and sanitation sector to improve child health and survival. Calling India’s public health a “mixed story”, Gates said though it has made progress in almost every area of public health, there is still a long way to go in some areas related to child health. “Well, public health, you know, India’s definitely a mixed story where there are some really good, incredible things like the

level of expertise in the country and the experts we work with,” Gates told news agancy. He now heads the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is engaged in major philanthropic work globally. The Gates Foundation Scientific Advisory Board, he noted, has more people from India than anywhere. “They are super helpful to us. More vaccines are made there than anywhere,” he said. Dust storm kills 73 in UP: Yogi Adityanath visits victims, takes aerial survey of affected areas

Three days after a deadly dust storm claimed 73 lives and injured 91 in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday took an aerial survey of the areas that were affected and met the victims at a hospital. The dust storm that pummeled several parts of western and northern India on Wednesday killed more than 100 people and injured at least 205, in total. In Rajasthan, 36 people were killed and more than 100 injured. Adityanath also distributed cheques to people affected by the storm in Agra’s Fatehabad and said, “Relief has been provided to the affected. Kin of those who died have been given Rs 4 lakhs as ex-gratia and the injured are given free treatment in hospitals.” He had, on Thursday, directed

state officers to personally monitor relief operations and provide all necessary medical facilities to the affected. He had also warned that no laxity will be tolerated in providing aid to those in need. The chief minister was campaigning in poll-bound Karnataka on the day

of the incident. Several Opposition leaders including Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress’ Randeep Singh Surjewala had targeted him for rallying in the state instead of attending to the situation in Uttar Pradesh. “I am sorry your CM is

needed here in Karnataka. I am sure he will return soon & attend to his work there,” Siddaramaiah had tweeted on Thursday. Cutting short his visit to Karnataka, Adityanath rushed back to visit storm-hit Uttar Pardesh on Friday to take stock of the situation in different parts of the state. Agra district was worst hit by the dust storm, accounting for 43 deaths. Other districts affected included Bijnor, Bareli, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Firozabad, Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar, Rae Bareli and Unnao. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from PM National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to dust storms in various states of Northern India. He also approved Rs 50,000 each for those seriously injured due to storms.

be there on the dais,” said a source. Yet, the Ministry’s invitation to the award-winners mentioned that the President would give the awards. It was this that sparked off the protests by the winners.

Sources said I&B Secretary N K Sinha met President Kovind on May 1 to inform him about the number and categories of the awards he would give. Rashtrapati Bhavan sources said not only had the Ministry been informed in advance, there were several discussions on the venue too after the Ministry suggested changing it from Vigyan Bhawan — where the awards have traditionally been held — to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Subsequently, both sides agreed that Rashtrapati Bhavan does not have an auditorium large enough to accommodate an event of this scale and, therefore.

Mumbai HC judge hears pleas till 3.30 am to clear backlog

Mumbai : While most judges in the Bombay High Court tried to wrap up the pending matters and urgent hearings by 5 pm yesterday, the last working day before the summer break, one judge presided over his court until the wee hours today, hearing pleas that sought urgent interim reliefs. Justice Shahrukh J Kathawalla presided over a packed courtroom till 3.30 am, hearing arguments and passing orders on petitions. “The courtroom was packed with senior counsels, lawyers and litigants, whose matters were being heard. There were over 100 civil petitions that had sought urgent interim reliefs,” a senior counsel, who was present in the court till the judge rose from his seat, said. While this is the first time

Justice Kathawalla sat in the court till so late, two weeks ago, he had heard matters in his chamber till midnight. “Justice Kathawalla, even at that hour (3.30 am), was as fresh as one would be in the morning. My matter was one of the last ones to be heard. Even then the judge heard our arguments patiently and passed orders,” another senior counsel, Praveen Samdani, said. Justice Kathawalla often begins the court proceedings at 10 am, an hour earlier than the other judges, and hears matters beyond 5 pm, when the court shuts for the day. A staff member of the courtroom said despite hearing the matters till so late, the judge was back in his chambers this morning to finish pending work.

Karl Marx and the spectre of fascism The 200th birth anniversary of Karl Marx last Saturday has led to a spate of articles about the guru of revolution, many critical, some adulatory. Let us, as Deng Xiaoping exhorted us, seek truth from facts. Marx was no ivory-tower intellectual, one of his most famous quotes being, “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point however is to change it.” Measured by that yardstick, Marx has been a dismal failure. Look all around you and you will see the triumph of capitalism, Marx’s lifelong adversary. Regimes that called themselves Marxist have either bitten the dust or embraced capitalism with gusto, while maintaining an Orwellian façade of socialism. Communist parties are pale pink shadows of their former selves. Despite Marx’s dire predictions, capitalism has had spectacular success with economic growth. It has lifted millions out of poverty. Its technological achievements have been stupendous. Its track record in protecting democracy has been far better than the sordid regimes that claimed Marx’s ideological mantle. Yet curiously, some of Marx’s descriptions of capitalism sound extraordinarily modern. Consider this passage from the Communist Manifesto: “The need of a constantly expanding market for its products chases the bourgeoisie over the entire surface of the globe. It must nestle everywhere, settle everywhere, establish connections everywhere... All old-established national industries have been destroyed or are daily being destroyed. They are dislodged by new industries, whose introduction becomes a life and death question for all civilised nations.” There can hardly be a better description of the global economy today. The underlying logic of capitalism remains the same, its “constant revolutionising of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation.” Indeed, Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England and no friend of Marxism, said in a recent speech, “If you substitute platforms for textile mills, machine learning for steam engines, Twitter for the telegraph, you have exactly the same dynamics as existed 150 years ago when Karl Marx was scribbling the Communist Manifesto.” Carney was worrying about the automation of jobs and its impact on employment and inequality. Inequality, as Thomas Piketty has pointed out, is now at levels last seen in the 1920s. The advanced economies have been pruning their social safety nets. In developing countries, millions of workers are deserting unviable farms and, without decent jobs in the cities, eke out a precarious existence in fetid city slums.

Gigi Hadid apologises amidst backlash

Doting mom Soni Razdan seems extremely proud of daughter Alia Bhatt’s achievements. Soni and Alia will be seen in Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, which is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka’s book Calling Sehmat, a story inspired by the almost unbelievable real-life story of a woman who Sikka named Sehmat, to protect her identity. Soni likes to give her daughter space and says she doesn’t interfere in her personal life. “She talks to me about her personal life whenever she feels like. It’s her life and I don’t like to interfere. But, I am a mom at the after all and I like to know what’s going on with her.” She says, “I ask her directly at times, so that way we are open, but I wouldn’t say too open. I think she is more open now about her life after she has moved away,” she adds. About Alia’s choice of films, Soni says, “She doesn’t come to me with her scripts and I am happy and proud of her choice of films. After her debut she could have taken the easy route. Actresses do glamorous roles and only after 10 films they do an offbeat one. But Alia didn’t. She picked films like Highway and Udta Punjab, too,” she said.

Please know that things would have been different if my control of the situation was different (sic).” Hadid concluded, “There are real issues regarding representation in fashion it’s our responsibility to acknowledge those issues and communicate through them to work towards a more diverse industry (sic).”

Mumbai: Priyanka Chopra’s dresses have often made headlines, sometimes for reasons involving serious issues like criticism for wearing a skirt while meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and when her cleavage-baring outfit offended Assam MLAs, or for fun-filled reasons like the memes and jokes over her trench coat gown at the Met Gala last year. The actress’ outfit is again in the news and fortunately for a reason similar to the latter. Priyanka looked steaming hot dressed in a pastel blazer with cut-outs around her chest for an appearance

on the ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’, and even shared pictures on Instagram. While there was a section of the Twitteratti and the Intagrammers slut-shaming her for revealing legs and cleavage, and some 'Indian culture-loving' ones even asking her to leave the country, another section took the opportunity to showcase their quirky and funny side. From calling it her stylish dress as designed for breastfeeding mothers to calling the cut-outs ‘Batman Eyes’ and making references and memes to various characters, Twitter users definitely had a

Has Mehrunisa dropped Ekta Kapoor's idea of desi Game of Thrones?

Ekta Kapoor is known to offer out-ofthe-box viewing choices to her audience. After exploring films and TV, Ekta is now discovering the digital platform. She is now in the process of creating projects through ALT Balaji. However, while there have been reports about Ekta remaking Game Of Thrones in a desi avatar, a source close to the production house denies any such thing. “Ekta is experimenting with different subjects, but there is no Indian version of Game Of Thrones. She will now be making a web series with Mouni Roy, titled Mehrunissa,” the source said. Ekta is currently busy promoting her film Veere Di Wedding.

It was indeed a big and emotional day for the late Sridevi’s family, as Boney, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor attended the National Film Awards ceremony held in Delhi on Thursday. The late actress’s elder daughter, Janhvi looked stunning at the event as she chose to wear a Manish Malhotra sari from her mother’s personal collection to the 65th National Film Awards ceremony, where she received her late mother’s Best Actress award. Sridevi won the Best Actress National Award posthumously for her role in Mom. Manish, who was extremely close to Sridevi, posted a photograph of Janhvi on Instagram wearing the sari and wrote an emotional message. Manish, who is Janhvi’s and Sridevi’s preferred designer, wrote, “The very pretty Janhvi Kapoor as she goes to receive Sridevi ma’am’s much deserved National Award for her fabulous performance in MOM. The 41-year-old actor made the admission in an interview with The New York Times where he was promoting his new film 'Deadpool 2'. "I have anxiety, I've always had anxiety. Both in the lighthearted 'I'm anxious about this' kind of thing, and I've been to the depths of the darker end of the spectrum, which is not fun," Reynold said. Gigi Hadid’s latest cover for Vogue Italia, which was shot by Steven Klein for the publication’s May issue, has been a source of controversy. Shraddha Kapoor and others make it to the worst dressed celebs of the week Bollywood and style have become synonymous over the years. More and more celebrities are now making sure that they look their best when they step out of their house. But unfortunately some times the celebrities, along with their stylist, suffer from a bad sense of fashion, which then comes under the scanner of the fashion police. Here’s presenting to you such worst dressed celebs of the week who weren’t up to the mark: Shraddha Kapoor, you are adorable at times, truly, but pairing up denim shirt and army pants? You could do so much better than that! We love the blue aviators Yami Gautam, and we would have given hearts to your look if you wouldn’t be carrying a jumper that could easily kidnap a kangaroo baby. ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’ fame Nushrat Bharucha looks hot at most times. Unfortunately, this look by her doesn’t make an impression. ‘Hate Story 4’ actress Urvashi Rautela is making us hate to even look at her with a red checked shirt (with elongated sleeves mind you), long denim skirt and to make it worse, a red bifocal. ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ actress Ishita Raj Sharma could have easily opted for a look that would be more like her personality.

MS Dhoni being among runs is a positive sign for India: Virat Kohli Mumbai: Defending champion Alexander Zverev advanced to the final of the Munich Open after a hard-fought 7-5 6-2 victory over South Korean’s Chung Hyeon on Saturday. World number three Zverev will take on compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber in Sunday’s all-German final. Next Gen ATP Finals champion Chung was quick off the blocks in the semi-final clash and took a 3-0 lead but top seed Zverev responded by winning five straight games. The Korean levelled the scores but Zverev was not affected by the attempted comeback and broke Chung’s serve for a third

time en route to clinching the set. Zverev continued his high-intensity approach in the second set and piled the pressure on his 21-year-old opponent, breaking Chung’s serve on two more occasions as he progressed to his second ATP final this year. The German, who won his first title on home soil in Munich in 2017, will face Kohlschreiber in the final after the veteran eased to a 6-2 6-4 win over Maximilian Marterer in the other semi-final. Marterer, 22, had not lost a set en route to the last four but was no match for Kohlschreiber.

Pune : Royal Challengers Bangalore might have faced another defeat in the IPl 2018 but skipper Virat Kohli said it was a great sign for Indian cricket as MS Dhoni is back among runs. He hailed Dhoni’s batting performance on Saturday in Pune. While chasing 128 runs in 20 overs, CSK went over the line with two overs to spare in the contest but before the match was wrapped up, Dhoni took on Yuzvendra Chahal and hammered him for three sixes in one over. Talking about Dhoni’s knock, Kohli during the post-match presentation admitted that the way former skipper is scoring runs is a positive sign for Indian cricket. Dhoni scored an unbeaten 31 off 23. “I think it was a close match, we did really well to pull it back but two drop catches doesn’t help.

Mumbai : Kolkata Knight Riders vicecaptain Robin Uthappa has praised the all-round skills of his team-mate Sunil Narine but said that the West Indian has been doing better in the bowling department this IPL season. “Sunil (Narine) is someone who is always enjoyed batting, someone who’s always been a batsman who can bowl than a bowler. But what he bowled and what he does with his bowling skill is that his batting got overshadowed,” Uthappa told reporters ahead of KKR’s match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. Narine has picked up 10 wickets from nine games and also has contributed with the bat amassing 193 runs with highest score of 50. “So he

(Narine) could always bat, open the innings. We saw that he can utilise the powerplay so well with the way he bats. And having someone like me at number three also makes it easier for the team and the management also to make that decision that if a wicket falls quickly, then you have another opening batsmen going in,” said Uthappa. “But he’s come off so well, and it had also done a world of good to his confidence personally. From the outside when I look at it, he’s got another opportunity to contribute to the team which had made him more successful as a player,” the right-handed bastman explained. Uthappa made it clear that with KKR’s batting order, it was not possible for young Shubman Gill to bat higher up.

Ahmedabad : Alfanar, a Saudi Arabia-based firm will be setting up a 300 megawatt (MW) windmill project in Kutch district of Gujarat that will help electrify over 2.9 lakh households, company sources said Wednesday. “The proposed project is expected to come up about 50 kilometers, north-east of Bhuj. There will be 131 wind turbines that will generate the required 300 MW,” an official from the company told The Indian Express. Alfanar had recently bagged the 300 MW wind project from the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited. The project is slated to be commissioned within 18 months from the signing

of the PPA (Power Purchase Agreement). The project is expected to boost the wind power generation capacity of Gujarat which currently stands at over 5500 MW. Compared to other renewable sources of power, wind energy tops with over 5000 million units of generation. Gujarat is only behind Tamil Nadu in wind power generation. “Alfanar has planned and identified a team of experienced employees, who will be working dedicatedly on the 300 MW clean energy development project to ensure quality and timely completion of the project,” said Mohammed Irfan, director, Alfanar Energy, India in a statement.

Withdraw notices to nine teachers or face stir, Gujarat Youth Congress tells CUG Ahmedabad : The Gujarat Pradesh Yuva Congress (GPYC) has asked the Central University of Gujarat (CUG) to immediately withdraw the showcause notices issued to nine of its faculty members for reportedly taking part in an event attended by Congress president Rahul Gandhi during last year’s Assembly elections and allegedly canvassing for anti-BJP candidates. The showcause notices were

issued to the teachers last month after HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar received a complaint allegedly from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s unit at CUG. Threatening to launch an aggressive agitation if the notices were not withdrawn, GPYC general secretary Parthivrajsinh Kathwadia on Thursday said that issuing the notices indicated “intolerance of the BJP government towards the teachers”.
