In Bengal pockets, saffron and red quietly share space

Arch-rivals BJP and CPIM and in some places even Congress have unofficially started to co-ordinate, have tacit understanding in seats and hold joint rallies to thwart Trinamool Congress on poll day. Kolkata : THEY ARE bitter rivals, locked in a violent turf war in Kerala, sparing no opportunity to display their contempt for each other on every forum across the country. But in pockets of West Bengal, where the panchayat polls will be held on May 14, saffron and red are quietly sharing space to face a common enemy — the blue of Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. In Nadia district, 130 km north of Kolkata, election graffiti on walls have the lotus symbol of the BJP and the hammer-and-sickle of CPM on the same side along with the names of candidates and a common appeal. One such image at Mollahad village in Karimnagar seeks votes for Sumitra Mondol of CPM in the gram panchayat, and Bikas Mondol and Ajit Roy of BJP for the panchayat samiti and zilla parishad. It’s not just graffiti. In Burdwan’s Purbashali, BJP leaders claim that local CPM leaders have even invited them to take part in “small joint protest rallies” against the Trinamool. On April 28, at a protest rally in Ranaghat’s Majhergram village, CPM MLA Rama Biswas and party workers were seen walking with BJP workers and leaders. “It was a spontaneous protest rally by people. Apart from BJP and CPM, Congress workers too were present,” said Biswas.

Vijay Mallya can be regarded as ‘fugitive from justice’: UK HC

New Delhi : The UK High Court on Wednesday concluded that liquor baron Vijay Mallya, wanted in India to face charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crore, can be regarded as a “fugitive from justice”. This comes a day after he lost a lawsuit filed by 13 Indian banks in the UK High Court seeking to collect more than $ 1.55 billion from him. Judge Andrew Henshaw, who upheld the worldwide freeze order and ruled in favour of 13 Indian state-owned banks, took note of the fact that the 62-yearold businessman is contesting his extradition to India relating to “alleged financial misconduct”. “In all these circumstances, and even taking account of the fact that Dr Mallya is contesting the alleged grounds for extradition, there are grounds for regarding Dr Mallya as a fugitive from justice,”

SC pulls up ASI for failing to take steps to protect Taj Mahal

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Wednesday came down heavily on the Archeological Survey of India for its failure to take appropriate steps to protect and preserve the iconic Taj Mahal. The apex court also expressed concern over the historic monument being infected by insects and asked the authorities, including ASI, what steps they have taken to prevent this. “This situation would not have arisen if the ASI would have done its job. We are surprised with the way the ASI is defending itself. You (Centre) please consider if the ASI is needed there or not,” a bench of Justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta told Additional Solicitor General ANS Nadkarni, who was

appearing for the Centre. Nadkarni told the bench that the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) was considering the apex court’s suggestion to appoint international

experts to look into the issue of protection and preservation of Taj Mahal. The counsel for ASI told the court that the problem of insects was due to stagnation of the water

of river Yamuna. The top court has been monitoring developments in the area to protect the monument, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1631. The mausoleum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The apex court had on May 1 expressed concern over the changing colour of the Taj Mahal apparently due to pollution and rapped the government saying “perhaps you don’t care”. Observing that the monument had earlier turned yellow and was now going brownish and greenish in colour, the apex court had pulled up the authorities for not taking appropriate steps to preserve and protect it.

the judge said as part of his ruling. The court was unconvinced by Mallya’s claim that he has been a non-resident Indian (NRI) since 1988 and has lived in England since 1992, a country where he has indefinite leave to remain (ILR). “The evidence indicates that prior to March 2016 Dr Mallya travelled fairly regularly between India and England for business and political reasons. Most of his business interests were in or closely connected with India, most notably United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines… Whilst Dr Mallya has indefinite leave to stay in the UK, he is said to be a non-resident taxpayer,” the court observed. The judge also concluded that the businessman had been in “clear breach” of a Karnataka court’s order when he disposed of assets like a historic sword of Tipu Sultan acquired at an auction in 2003.

The sword Vijay Mallya cannot get rid of

The Tipu Sultan sword that Vijay Mallya believes brought him bad luck continues to hang over his head, although the flamboyant fugitive had given it away to an undisclosed source to get rid of its curse. UK High Court judge Andrew Henshaw, who ruled in favour of a consortium of Indian banks, has ordered that the verdict of a Bengaluru Debt Recovery Tribunal can be legally enforced against his assets in England and Wales so that the banks are able to recover their money, worth Rs10,210 crore. The judge cited Mallya's 'disposal' of the sword to highlight the risk of his assets being dissipated or diminished in value. The worldwide freeze order now prevents Mallya from removing any assets from England and Wales amounting up to 1.145 billion pounds or disposing of them in any manner in or outside the court's jurisdiction. Mallya can continue to believe in the sword's curse, but he cannot blame his sorrow on anything but his own misdeeds in living off people's money and making away with national wealth. By giving the slip to the law-enforcement authorities in India, he thought he was too smart for the country's old-fashioned systems. Mallya and his team tried all the tricks in their books to establish that the default by Kingfisher Airlines, which triggered the collapse of his empire, was the result of a business failure within the context of the global financial crisis and that he had no fraudulent intent. But all that was to no avail. The court ruling is a major setback to the owner of the UB Group, who is facing a series of court battles in England, including the all-important extradition trial at the Westminster Magistrates' Court. Arrested by Scotland Yard in April last year on the basis of an extradition warrant, he is currently on a 650,000-pound bail bond. The crucial case is now set for hearing on July 11. Judge Andrew Henshaw's ruling will strengthen the claim by the prosecution, representing the Indian government, that there was 'dishonesty' on the part of the businessman in acquiring loans through misrepresentation and with no intention to repay. The UK ruling must come as a stark reminder of the fate awaiting similar fraudsters, fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi included. Modi is now spending time in Hong Kong, hoping that the island's complicated colonial era legal system will make it difficult for the Indian authorities to reach him. India has already asked for his provisional arrest, but, apparently, there is a long judicial process involved, which could last up to one year or more before action can be taken. Like Mallya, Modi will surely have a hundred objections. But, with credible evidence, everything could fall into place, as testified by the UK decision.

Shraddha and Jacqueline fight over Sushant Singh Rajput

No, this isn’t a catfight. It’s a film fight. Actresses Shraddha Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez are both vying for a role in Nitesh Tiwari’s next. The film is produced by Fox Star Studios and Sajid Nadiadwala, and will star the charming Sushant Singh Rajput. Shraddha and Jacqueline are both eager to star opposite Sushant in the film, which is set to go on the floors by the end of this year. Interestingly, Sushant and Jacqueline are already sharing screen space in Tarun Mansukhani’s film Drive, which is bankrolled by Karan Johar and will release in September this year. “So, the dilemma for the makers is if the pair is fresh, it will be an interesting option for the viewers. If Drive does well, it will be common sense to repeat the pair. Jacqueline, who is close to Sajid Nadiadwala and also stars in Kick 2 with Salman Khan, is also pushing her luck with Sajid. Shraddha too is keen to be a part of the film. So, it is more of a decision to be made by the filmmakers as to who suits the role better,” says a trade source.

We get confidence when we see our idols, Aamir and Salman, do this. As the next generation we should up the bar and try to follow them," Ram told PTI in an interview. 'Rangasthalam', a period drama set against a village backdrop in the 1980's, features Ram as Chitti Babu, a partially deaf, light-hearted and jolly villager.

'What clothes have you worn': When Shahid Kapoor asked sister Sanah in front of Misha

Soon to be a father for the second time, Shahid Kapoor is no exception of a father. As much as he dotes on his daughter, his concern for sister Sanah Kapoor is no less. Sanah, who is very close to her brother, reveals that the actor is very protective. “Bhaiya is very protective which he has been for a long time. But having turned a father, his protectiveness has multiplied in many ways. One day, when I was busy playing with Misha (Shahid’s daughter), he entered the room and started asking ‘Yeh kya kapdey pehney hai tumne? Tumhe dekh kar Misha bhi aise kapde pehnagi, ya phir chaige pehnna’ (What are you wearing? Looking at you even Misha will want to wear such clothes). I guess the dress I was wearing did not go well with him,” says Sanah. Will Shahid face backlash for this comment? “It sounded so cute. He has become such an over-protective father. CSK captain MS Dhoni reveals name of first crush, says ‘Don’t tell Sakshi’

Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week's Italian Open, saying she needs more time to be "100 percent ready to compete."

Kolkata: Surprised by Virat Kohli’s decision to skip the Afghanistan Test, Australia’s World Cup winning captain Michael Clarke feels the Indian skipper should fly back from Surrey to play the historic one-off Test in Bengaluru. The Indian captain has decided to give the landmark June 14-18 Test a miss to prepare for the England tour by playing for Surrey in the County Championship, a decision that has evoked mixed response. In an interactive session with cricket historian Boria Majumdar, Clarke said he always prioritised playing Test cricket, irrespective of the opposition. “I’m really surprised… I don’t know why, it’s Virat’s choice. I think a Test match is a Test match. I don’t care who we play against. It has to be your number one priority,” Clarke said at the session organised by the Indian Chambers

of Commerce. “To represent your country is the most special feeling in the world. I would like to see him fly back and play the Test, a bit of gap in the schedule which can allow him to do that,” Clarke added. Kohli had an unforgettable England sojourn in 2014, making only 134 runs in five Tests at an average of 13.4. Clarke, however, backed Kohli’s decision to turn up for county cricket and said it will send a clear message about his goal to win in England. “Definitely it’s fantastic preparation and it shows his determination and how hungry he is to perform individually and how much he wants India to be successful. It’s sending a clear message to his teammates and England that he wants to have a successful tour of UK. He wants to win that series,” Clarke said.

I bowl the wrong’un much better to righties,” he is quoted as saying in an interview with ESPNCricinfo, “I still enjoy bowling to lefties, especially

when I beat them with the wrong’uns, whether I get a wicket or not. Otherwise, I enjoy bowling to both kind of batsmen. But I don’t feel that “Oh, a lefty or righty is on strike now” and do things differently.” Since making his debut with Afghanistan a few days after his 17th birthday during the team’s ODI tour of Zimbabwe in October 2015, Rashid Khan has gone on to become one of the leading leg spinners in limited overs cricket, even clinching the no.1 spot in ICC T20I bowler’s

rankings. He has also been one of the most soughtafter names in franchisebased T20 tournaments around the world. Playing in IPL 2018, Rashid has been working under the Sri Lankan spin great Muttiah Muralitharan. “When he saw my action and everything, he told me, “You are absolutely perfect, and you don’t need to change anything.” He talks to me about spot bowling – focus on where I want to pitch the ball, the spot I want to target.

I feel like it was a very good match, the hardest here. She has improved a lot since last year, we played together here, and she was a different player.”Halep will next face Krystyna’s twin sister Karolina Pliskova, who raced past American Sloane Stephens 6-2 6-3.

Washington : The World Bank has denied as “incorrect” media reports in Pakistan that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif allegedly laundered $4.9 billion to India. Pakistan’s top anti-corruption body, National Accountability Bureau, yesterday ordered a probe against the embattled former prime minister and others after reports of his involvement in the money laundering emerged in the media. The World Bank also referred to a statement by the State Bank of Pakistan which rejects estimates of $ 4.9 billion in remittances from Pakistan to India on September 21, 2016, and provides an explanation of the methodology used in the World Bank report and the official remittances numbers.

Beirut : US President Donald Trump is not fit for his job, the speaker of Iran’s parliament said on Wednesday, in Tehran’s most personal criticism since Trump’s decision to withdraw from a 2015 nuclear pact between Tehran and six world powers. Trump pulled the United States out of the deal on Tuesday, raising the risk of conflict in the Middle East, upsetting European allies and casting uncertainty over global oil supplies “Trump does not have the mental capacity to deal with issues,” parliament speaker Ali

Larijani told the assembly, broadcast live on state TV.Members of parliament burned an American flag and a symbolic copy of the Iran deal, known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as a session of parliament began. They also chanted “Death to America”.“Trump’s abandoning of the nuclear deal was a diplomatic show … Iran has no obligation to honour its commitments under the current situation,” Larijani said. “It is obvious that Trump only understands the language of

force.”General Mohammad Baqeri, the chief of staff of Iran’s military, said Iran had not had to sign the deal. “But that arrogant country (America) did not even stand by its signature,” the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) quoted him as saying.President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday Iran would remain committed to the deal without Washington despite Trump’s decision to withdraw from it. The pact was designed to deny Tehran the ability to build nuclear weapons.

Washington : With President Donald Trump junking the landmark nuclear deal with Iran, the US will now reimpose the stringent sanctions it placed on Tehran before the 2015 agreement and is considering new penalties, the US media reported today. Trump yesterday argued that the deal struck by the previous Obama administration and world powers was “defective at its core” and that he would pull

out and reimpose sanctions on Iran, the world’s fifth-biggest oil producer. The US will now reinstate all the sanctions it had waived as part of the nuclear accord, and it will impose additional economic penalties that are now being drawn up by the Treasury Department, The New York Times reported. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin declined yesterday to specify what additional sanctions

the Trump administration might impose on Iran, but he expressed confidence that they would still be powerful even if other American allies did not follow suit. “We do not want to let Iran use the US financial markets and financial system and transact in dollars until they agree that not only will they not have a nuclear weapon now, but we’ve put in provisions that they will never have one,” Mnuchin said.
