‘Girnar will become the new identity of Gujarat’ Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has recently declared that the five-day annual Shivratri fair being held at Girnar foothills in Junagadh with lakhs of devotees for several years now would be observed as the ‘Mini Kumbh Mela’. It has also planned to constitute a Girnar Development Authority which will work for development of religious places in and around the area. The site is revered by both Hindus and Jains. A few days later, reports emerged that it is also planning to develop a one-of-its-kind Jain tourist circuit as places like Palitana, Naliya, Taranga and Songadh in the state attract a lot of Jain tourists throughout the year. There are plans to develop this tourist circuit with several others states including Bihar. These developments assume significance particularly in the wake of the recently concluded

amicable resolution of the dispute between Hindus and Jains over the fifth ‘tonk’ (peak) of Girnar—visited Shravanabelagola. When asked how ‘Mini Kumbh Mela’ tag will benefit the area or local economy, Ahmedabad mayor Gautam Shah, said, “It is a laudable step. This announcement will boost tourism in the area . Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi re-elected RSS general Left Withdraws Candidate In Tripura's secretary for fourth time Charilam, Alleges Violence By BJP Workers

Nagpur: Suresh alias Bhaiyyaji Joshi, 70, was re-elected as the RSS Sarkaryawah (general secretary) at the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) of the organisation in Nagpur on Saturday. With this, Joshi equals the record of most number of tenures – four at a stretch – to be offered to any incumbent in the post. Earlier, it was V Seshadri who had held the post for 13 years since 1987. Joshi was first chosen Sarkaryawah in 2008 with Mohan Bhagwat taking over as Sarsanghchalak. Speculations were rife this time too about the possible election of Joshi’s deputy, Sahsarkaryawah Dattatreya Hosbale, as Sarkaryawah (general secretary) as reported by The Indian Express earlier this week. Joshi continues to be the executive head of the organisation. Joshi was unwell for the some time, a reason often cited for his possible replacement. Sangh sources, however, said, “He is now fit and is also undertaking tours across the country. Moreover, he

Why cinnamon buns are all weather classics How did you celebrate the arrival of spring? Did you

get dressed in lightweight, white clothes, go to an outdoor party where everyone was throwing coloured powder and tucking into the “interesting” lassi and brownies? Did you return home pleasantly “relaxed” and spend the next week trying to get the purple pigment out of your hair? This is how I celebrated the first day of spring, or, as it is known in these parts, #snowmageddon. I put on every warm layer of clothing I possess, ate a huge bowl of porridge, then trudged through Arctic snow to get to work, only to find no one else there, so I trudged back home. On the way, I met a woman skiing down the middle of an eerily quiet street to visit her mother in hospital. Now if you actually live in Siberia, from where the blizzards, winds and snow blow in and where normal life is perfectly possible at minus 40 degrees Celsius, you might be tempted to tell us Scots to get a grip. After just a few hours of snow and temperatures just below zero, all our public transport was cancelled, thousands of schools closed and we were being told that under no circumstances should we leave the house. On the second day, the army was drafted in to get health service staff in to work. There was a feverish mix of alarm and excitement, a rush of childlike delight in the simple pleasures of snow, worry for the hundreds of drivers stranded in their cars for up to 20 hours in highland snowdrifts, and the many (far too many) people who are still sleeping rough on our streets. Amidst all the heartening (I urge you to check out the clip of a family of deer walking through the Perthshire town of Dunkeld) and heart-rending stories, there was a recurring theme of the worst of weather bringing out the best of humanity. Even social media was full of human kindness: people braving the elements to bring food to others; doctors walking miles to work; and soup, gallons and gallons of soup. Bowls of soupy comfort were offered and accepted all over the country, in church halls, cafés, from neighbour to neighbour. It was even dangled in pots from a bridge to stranded motorists. As a consequence of the havoc wreaked by “the beast from the east”, I was stuck indoors for several days. So, of course, I did lots of baking—I had time for sourdough bread, experimental gluten-free cakes. The most enjoyable things I made, though, were these lovely cinnamon buns which made me feel like I was holed up in a Scandinavian log cabin. I also made lots of soup, but if you’re enjoying an Indian spring, that probably doesn’t have much appeal. The buns, though, are divine - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara whatever the Editor weather.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan opens up about her character in Fanne Khan

Mumbai: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is set to woo us in her upcoming movie, Fanne Khan, which will release on July 13. In a recent interview, the beauty queen talked about her role in the film, which also stars Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. "I am a chapter in the film, not the fulcrum. There are other talents in the story and you will see why I chose to do the film once it releases. I am working with Anil for the third time and though I want to call him Anilji, he insists I call him Anil. He is such a dedicated and ever-charged artiste," Aishwarya told Hindustan Times Fanne Khan is the remake of 2000's Dutch movie, Everybody's Famous, in which a father kidnaps a pop star to make his teenage overweight daughter a singer. Thus, the movie also tackles the bodyshaming issue. In Fanne Khan, it looks like Aishwarya will play the pop star and Anil Kapoor will be the father. The first picture of the movie that leaked from the sets too tells us the same story. Last month, Aishwarya's first look was released and she looked breath-taking in it. However, it reminded us of her look from her last flick, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The film also stars Rajkummar, who is going to romance the former Miss World for the first time on-screen. Talking about romancing Aishwarya, he had told Press Trust of India: "There is a love angle between us which I am looking forward to but I am nervous for it, I will have to romance the world's most beautiful woman." Earlier talking about Anil Kapoor's character, the producer Arjun N. Alauddin Khilji’s character in Padmaavat reminded me of Azam Khan: Jaya Prada

Mumbai : Actor turned politician Jaya Prada on Saturday said that Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s character in the movie Padmaavat reminded her of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. Jaya also said that she was “harassed” by Khan during one of the elections in which she was contesting. “When I was watching Padmaavat, Khilji’s character reminded me of Azam Khan ji, how he had harassed me during elections when I was contesting,” the former MP from Rampur constituency in Uttar Pradesh said. Jaya Prada has accused the SP leader of arrogance and foul play on previous occasions

as well. In 2009, Jaya had accused Khan of spreading her ‘cheap’ posters to sully her image. The bitter rivalry between the two UP leaders surfaced in 2012 as well, with Jaya vowing to destroy Khan’s “arrogance”. The role of Alauddin Khilji, a 13th century Sultan of Delhi, was played by Ranveer Singh. The film, initially named Padmavati, was marred by controversy and its name was changed later. The period drama, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali faced protests in the country by members of Karni Sena who claimed that the historical facts in the movie were twisted.

they said. A suicide note was recovered from the flat where the actress was staying alone. “The house owner informed us today after the door of the flat was not opened since last afternoon,” they said. A probe has been initiated into the death of the actress, who police said could be under “severe depression”. “We have gone through her social networking site where her last post

appeared to be written out of depression. We are going through her mobile call list,” they said. According to reports, Moumita had been trying to break into the film industry, but when her constant efforts didn’t bear any fruition, she became depressed. As of now, the police are still trying to ascertain if there was any abetment to suicide, by going through her call list.

Zero star Katrina Kaif looks radiant in shimmery gold outfit Mumbai : Radhika Apte is currently vacaying in Goa and posted some amazing pictures on Instagram. The actress donned a blue and white striped twopiece while enjoying the tranquillity of the place. However, the social media moral police were all ready with their wand. The trolls slut-shamed the actress for wearing a bikini and advised that it was against the 'Indian culture'. However, knowing the actress to speak her mind, Radhika didn't refrain from giving it back to the trolls. In a conversation with DNA, she said, "I didn't even know I was being trolled till someone told me. It's ridiculous! Do people expect me to wear a sari on a beach?" When the actress was further asked how she deals with trolls, the Padman actress said, "I don't know them, so I don't deal with them." Well, this

isn't for the first time that an actress has been trolled for her style of clothing. Sonam Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Shama Sikander and many others have time and again been trolled. In an earlier interview with mid-day, speaking about her upcoming projects, Radhika Apte had said, "I have seven projects coming out and I have done completely different roles in all of them. In PadMan I play a village girl. In Baazaar, I play a girl, who is an extremely successful businesswoman--young, bright and independent. In Sacred Games, I play a RAW agent and in Anurag's film (international project), I play a young teacher in a metro city. In Sriram Raghavan's film with Ayushmann Khurrana, I play a very young, cool-vibe girl and in Ghoul (English film) I've played a military officer.

Mumbai: Katrina Kaif never fails to amaze her fans with her stunning pictures on social media and the actress has done it again. Katrina has shared a new image of hers on Instagram where she is admiring herself in the mirror. Dressed in shimmery golden attire, the Tiger Zinda Hai actress looks radiant. The image was clicked by "budding" photographer Shally Badlani. Just a few days ago, the actress, who is currently shooting for Aanand L Rai's Zero, had shared her look from the sets of the film. In the picture, she is dressed as a royal bride, wearing a richly embroidered outfit along with a maang tika (head ornament), nath (nose ring), earrings and necklace. Meanwhile, reports have been doing the rounds that Zero will see Katrina romancing Abhay Deol and not the

film's lead Shah Rukh Khan. She and Abhay had earlier worked together in Zoya Akhtar's 2011 hit movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Zero will see the Badshah of Bollywood play the role of a short man, while Anushka will essay the role of a struggling scientist. Katrina will play a movie star, who battles alcoholism, in the film. Talking about the same, she had earlier told Hindustan Times, "I play an actress in the film, but

I don't play myself. I'm not Katrina Kaif in the film." The film is set to release on December 21, 2018. Earlier, in an interview, director Rai had said that "dwarf is not the character" (SRK's role) but just defines the size of his character. He said like his other films, this film too would tell the story of a man and a woman. Anand also doesn't want fans to think it'll be the story of a "dwarf," but rather be looked at as a story of a short man.

US tariff hike: India can stand tall in a trade war, says Anand Mahindra

New Delhi: Asserting that India can "stand tall in a trade war", noted industrialist Anand Mahindra has said the world needs access to the country's fast-growing large economy amid the US hiking tariffs on certain steel imports. "Not sure why Indian markets seem so perturbed by the threat of global tariff wars. Small, export focused countries stand to lose. Countries with large domestic economies can easily withstand tariff threats. The world needs access to the fastestgrowing large economyIndia," Mahindra said in a tweet. The chief of the diversified Mahindra Group further said MNCs wanting access to India's markets will have to manufacture locally, which they will. "So, no danger of drifting back to a socialist, stagnant economy. I'm no believer

in protectionism and enjoy competing globally but I believe India can stand tall in a trade war," the industrialist added. The US recently imposed hefty tariffs on imported steel and aluminium, citing national security concerns and the need to protect American industries from "unfair" business practices, triggering fears of a global trade war US President Donald Trump signed two proclamations that levied a 25 per cent tariff on steel and a 10 per cent tariff on aluminium imported from all countries except neighbouring Canada and Mexico. India will wait for the notification to see the impact of tariff hikes, Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia had said even as there has been a global outcry over the US' decision to increase duties beyond its commitment at the WTO. Mahindra, in another tweet, said, "If India retaliates with tariffs, the effect will be very different from what it was post-independence. Today, India's a freemarket economy.

New Delhi: Fast bowler Mohammed Shami is doubtful for this year`s Indian Premier League (IPL) as his franchise waits for direction from the Indian cricket board (BCCI) on his availability after being accused of adultery and domestic violence by his wife. A key cog in India`s pace attack, the 27-year-old was left out of the list of contracted players unveiled by the BCCI on Wednesday but the board did not offer any immediate explanation as to why. Shami was charged on Friday by police in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata based on a complaint by his wife and media in India have linked the allegations as a reason why he missed a central contract. Shami used Twitter to dismiss the "false allegations" and called it a "big conspiracy" to derail his game. The case against the Delhi Daredevils bowler, however, could affect his participation in the IPL that starts on April 7. "We

are waiting for a direction from BCCI on him," Delhi Daredevils chief executive Hemant Dua told Reuters on Saturday. "We approached the BCCI on this. It`s a tripartite agreement between the player, the franchise and the BCCI. "BCCI is doing some internal checks and they said they would get back to us soon. We are waiting for their feedback." Vinod Rai, chairman of the committee of administrators governing the BCCI, has called it a "Catch 22" situation for the board. "Ordinarily you would distinguish and say that (the allegation) is a personal

issue and the contract is a professional issue," Rai told the ESPN Cricket website. "But someone could easily point out and say this allegation is an unsavoury one and you are still rewarding him (Shami)." He was not immediately available for comment when Reuters contacted him on Saturday. Right-arm bowler Shami made his test debut for India in 2013 against West Indies and played the last of his 30 tests in South Africa in January. Shami has also played 50 one dayers and seven Twenty20 Internationals.

Matt Renshaw's on-field joke costs him rare five-run penalty in Sheffield Shield

New Delhi: Australian cricketer Matthew Renshaw's on-field joke to use wicketkeeping gloves to collect a throw during a Sheffield Shield match attracted a five-run penalty for his team Queensland on Friday. The incident took place in a match between Queensland and Western Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. When keeper Jimmy Peirson threw his glove on the field to chase the ball towards square leg, Renshaw, who

was fielding at the first slip, picked the gloves and used it to collect the throw from Peirson. Renshaw's act was against the law of the game. According to the rule book, Rule 27.1 of the Laws of Cricket states that wicketkeeper is the only fielder who is allowed to wear gloves on the field. The 21-year-old's joked proved costly as umpires were forced to slap his team with a five-run penalty. Speaking to cricket.com.au, Renshaw

said that he wore the glove because he thought it was funny. "The glove dropped right next to me so I thought it'd be quite funny to put the glove on and try and take a catch with the glove on. I didn't really think of the rule at the time, I just thought it'd be quite funny. But the umpires came together and said it was five penalty runs. I know that you're not supposed to do it, but I thought it was just one of those frowned upon things." To Renshaw's relief the incident didn't have any impact on the result of the match as Queensland won the game easily by 211 runs. The opener has played 10 Tests or Australia but hasn't featured for his team since their tour of Bangladesh last year due to poor form. He has been replaced by Cameron Bancroft in the team.

BJP’s demand for President’s rule in Karnataka out of desperation, says Congress Bengaluru: AICC General Secretary B K Hariprasad Saturday said BJP was demanding President’s rule in Karnataka out of desperation to win the upcoming assembly elections by indirectly taking administrative powers of the state into their hands. He accused the BJP leaders of misleading the people of the state as the election heat was spreading in Karnataka. Referring to B S Yeddyurappa’s demand for president’s rule, Hariprasad said the state BJP chief had forgotten the law and order situation in the state when

he was the Chief Minister and “people know about it.” He said after Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to northern parts of Karnataka, BJP had realised that it would not be able to win the elections….so indirectly they want to take administrative powers of the state into their hands. They are desperate to win this election, so they are making such demands,” he told reporters here. Accusing the Congress government in the state of “failure” on the law and order front, Yeddyurappa had yesterday demanded that the Governor recommend imposition of President’s

rule in the state. Hariprasad hit out at BJP by listing out the various incidents in BJP ruled states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajastan. He also alleged that from March 2017 to

January 2018 900 fake encounters had taken place in Uttar Pradesh, in which 33 people have been killed. Pointing out that Karnataka and other southern states when compared to BJP ruled

states, “are hundred years ahead,” Hariprasad said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and Yeddyurappa repeatedly speak about ‘Vikasa’ (development), but the steps they taking is leading the country towards ‘Vinasha’ (destruction). On the allegations regarding repeated incidents of murder involving Hindu activists under the Congress regime in the state, Hariprasad said “in 23 cases 14 of them are incidents where a Hindu has killed Hindu… the remaining few are out of personal enmity or grudge.”

Ahmedabad: In poll-bound Phulpur, Congress ratcheted up a re-run of series of temple visits, peddling a soft-Hindutva campaign theme witnessed in Gujarat assembly polls late last year. Its party candidate Manish Mishra, a Brahmin, wore a traditional dhoti and ‘janeu’ while also sporting a smeared forehead through out the last day of campaigning on Friday. The party went for several temple visits in the past 48 hours. On Friday, Mishra, along with UP Congress president Raj Babbar, went to the iconic Hanuman Temple on the banks of Sangam. The two were seen holding long

prayers before the Hanuman idol, which is kept in a reclining position at the temple. Congress national president Rahul Gandhi’s templehopping across as many as 27 shrines in Gujarat, had triggered a war of words between BJP and his party, eventually helping the Congress increase their tally from 61 seats to 77. Party’s Phulpur candidate rejected the allegations of soft- Hindutva taken by the Congress. “We all are Godfearing and God-loving people. We don’t need any lessons in describing our beliefs in religion. The BJP mocked Rahulji's temple visits. But the results of

the election show that he was able to connect with people,” said Misra. On Saturday, Congress leaders had visited as many as four shrines in Allahabad, including Aindri Dham. BJP leaders, too, had delivered Phulpur poll speeches around the recent budget allocations of more than Rs 1,000 crore towards the upcoming 2019 Kumbh mela and its preparations. Congress in the only recognised party to have fielded a Brahmin candidate in a seat that has equal caste-wise distribution of Brahmins, Kurmi Patels (OBCs), non-Yadav OBCs and Muslims.
