On day of top cop Himanshu Roy's suicide, 2 men he booked get life term

Mumbai: In a case supervised by late Himanshu Roy as Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Mumbai, two accused were sentenced to life imprisonment on the day Roy ended his life. A sessions court in Mumbai on Saturday awarded life imprisonment to two persons in the 2012 murder case of actor Meenakshi Thapa. It awarded the sentence to Amit Jaiswal, 36 and his girlfriend Preeti Surin, 26. "Jaiswal and Surin, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, had befriended Thapa, 26 on the sets of 'Heroine', a Bollywood film directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. Both the accused used to work as model coordinators. Under the impression that the actor belonged to a rich family, the duo hatched a conspiracy to abduct her and demand Rs 15 lakh ransom from her family. They persuaded the actor, who

had moved to Mumbai from Dehradun, to accompany them to Uttar Pradesh on March 12, 2012, stating that there was an acting assignment for her. Subsequently, they had abducted her, but after realising that her family was in no position to

Yeddyurappa. Meanwhile, Congress president Rahul Gandhi toured across the state and interacted with voters from all walks of life. The war of words between

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi often got bitter and personal, especially during the last leg of campaigning. Just hours before the Karnataka Assembly election, the Election Commission on Friday deferred voting in Bengaluru's Rajarajeshwari Nagar (RR Nagar) constituency, where nearly 10,000 voter ID cards were found in a flat, to May 28. Voting for another constituency in Bengaluru was postponed due to the death of the BJP candidate and the sitting legislator.

Branch and was instrumental in solving it," a crime branch official said. Roy committed suicide by shooting himself at his south Mumbai residence, police said. Mumbai police, citing his suicide note, said the 1988-batch Indian Police Service officer took the extreme step "out of frustration" due to his prolonged battle with cancer. "Roy was on medical leave for the last two years as he had cancer and the suicide note, in his own handwriting makes it clear that he ended his life out of frustration due to this illness," a police statement said. Roy, who is survived by his mother and wife, would have been 55 next month. Roy shot himself with a licensed revolver at his home in Nariman Point at 12.40 pm and was rushed to Bombay Hospital where he was declared dead at 1.40 pm, an official said.

Bengaluru: Brushing aside BJP chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa’s claim that his party will win 150 seats and he will form the government in the state on May 17, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday called him “mentally disturbed”. He expressed confidence that Congress will win over 120 seats in the state. "Yeddyurappa is mentally disturbed. Congress will get more than 120 seats. I am very confident," Siddaramaiah told the media. He also said that the Congress party will come back to power with complete majority. Earlier on Saturday, after casting his vote, BS Yeddyurappa exuded confidence that his party will form the new government in Karnataka on May 17 after thumping victory. Hindus to agitate if SC verdict against Ram Mandir: VHP chief Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje Haridwar : Newly elected VHP international president Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje on Saturday said Hindus will launch a countrywide agitation to mount pressure on their local MPs for passage of a law in Parliament facilitating the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya if the Supreme Court’s verdict “goes against their faith”. On his first visit to the pilgrimage city after assuming charge, Kokje said the Ram temple issue is in a decisive stage of resolution in the Supreme Court and legal experts in the VHP believe that the apex court will pass a judgement in accordance with the faith of crores of Hindus. “However, if the court verdict goes

against their faith, crores of Hindus all over the country will start a movement to mount pressure on MPs representing their areas to pass a law in Parliament which paves the way for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya,” said Kokje in an interaction with the media here. Kokje said in 6-7 months the Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on the issue paving the way for the construction of a Ram Mandir. He said the VHP will continue to work on its old agenda of creating social amity, awareness against cow slaughter and religious conversion, Ram Mandir construction and conservation of the country’s rivers.

Ousted PM Nawaz Sharif tacitly admits Pakistan Income Tax Department’s black money chargesheet ‘baseless allegation’, says Chidambaram family ‘militants’ behind 26/11 Mumbai attacks

New Delhi : Contradicting Pakistan’s continuous denial of its role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday implicitly admitted that militant organisations which are active in the country were behind the dreadful terror strikes which claimed 166 lives. While responding to a question on national security in an exclusive interview with Dawn, Sharif asked why Pakistan was unable to complete the trial in the

case even after nine years. “Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t

we complete the trial?” he said. Ten Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists had sailed into Mumbai from Karachi and carried out coordinated attacks, killing 166 people and injuring over 300 in

November 2008. Jamaat-udDawa (JuD) chief Hafeez Saeed is the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The outfit was declared as a foreign terrorist organisation by the US in June 2014. The case has entered into the 10th year but none of its suspects in Pakistan has been punished yet, showing that the case had never been in the priority list of the country that appears to be keen to put it under the carpet.

Chennai : The family of former finance minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said that the chargesheets filed by the Income Tax Department (ITD) were ‘baseless allegations’ as the investments made overseas have been mentioned in their Income Tax returns. The chargesheets filed under the black money law against P chidambaram, his wife Nalini, his son Karti and Karti’s wife Srinidhi and a firm, Chess Global Advisory Services Private Limited, linked to Karti came under the scanner. To this effect, the chartered accountants for P Chidamabarm’s wife Nalini and by Karti Chidamabaram, his wife and a firm Chess Global Advisory Services Private Limited filed two different statements but with similar replies. It said: “The Income Tax returns are prepared and filed on the advice of

the chartered accountants. The investments in question were made through bank remittances. They were duly disclosed in the returns of income filed under Section 139 of the Income Tax Act for the relevant assessment year. It is totally wrong to allege there was a wilful failure to disclose the investments. The returns of income are a complete answer to the baseless allegation.

Resolution code must first Emily Ratajkowski responds to resolve balance of rights

Amultitude of hopes and expectations have been hitched to the new Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). There is a widespread belief that this is perhaps the best possible instrument so far—in terms of potential and capacity—for resolving the overhang of non-performing assets (NPAs) in the financial system. Conviction in the IBC’s abilities is also blended with large doses of faith: Clearing the backlog of NPAs will allow banks to indulge in fresh lending, thereby stimulating economic growth. There is merit and rationale for this rising groundswell of belief in the IBC. Compared to previous resolution frameworks—joint lenders’ forum, strategic debt restructuring, scheme for sustainable structuring of stressed assets, to name a few—the IBC seems to have plugged numerous gaps that plagued the earlier systems. It is time-bound, decision-oriented and provides disincentives for promoters trying to shield themselves from creditors. It has been a long and instructive journey when compared with the first attempt at sorting out insolvency through the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR). That said, there is a chance of the resolution process reverting to the BIFR mode owing to bankrupt shareholders finessing the shortcomings in the legal framework. The IBC’s many attributes also hide numerous flaws, including corporate India’s dodgy relationship with capital, providing it with incentives to manipulate the system. Ten out of the first lot of 12 cases—“dirty dozen”—referred to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for resolution have collided against their 270-day deadline, with some of them already exceeding the time limit. The resolution processes of these cases provide multiple pointers to the path that lies ahead and the course correction that is now required. At the core of the corrective mechanism must be a recognition of the balance of rights among various stakeholders—company promoters, other shareholders, members of the workforce, financial creditors, operational creditors, resolution professionals, members on the specialized NCLT and appellate tribunal benches, bidders—and how that squares with the IBC’s legal framework. Developments so far give rise to two observations. One, the regulatory and legal framework is being liberally interpreted and tweaked by various stakeholders, often at odds with either the code itself or occasionally militating against its very spirit. Two, as things stand, the current process and legal framework accords superior rights to some stakeholders, which may tick all the relevant commercial and legal boxes in a capitalist system but might fail a larger morality (or even ethical) test.

marriage critics

Emily Ratajkowski opened up about her marriage and about how she had to go through criticism for her decision. Apparently, there were many who thought that her marriage wouldn’t last and they were even taking guesses on its longevity. She shared in the June 2018 issue of Marie Claire, “People came after my marriage, like, ‘Wow. I give it three weeks.’ I’m like, ‘What?’ No one can take women seriously on any choices that they make, especially if they’re unique to them and they don’t play into the way we think women should get married. It’s a constant writing-off.”

Alia Bhatt wants to know these things about her ex-student mates Sidharth and Varun

Alia Bhatt finds Ranbir Kapoor open book, but still would spy on him for this

Alia Bhatt is on cloud nine since her movie ‘Raazi’ has received thunderous response at the cinema halls. The Meghna Gulzar directorial is based on Indian spy Sehmat Khan. DNA too asked Alia to spy on some celebrities. The actress is in news for getting too close to her ‘Brahmastra’ co-star Ranbir Kapoor. They are reportedly in a relationship and the speculations are very strong to deny. In fact Alia too in a recent interview said that she wouldn’t agree to or deny any rumours (when asked about her and Ranbir). While Alia thinks

Ranbir is an open book (she probably studied him too well), there is one thing about him that she wants to spy on. She told the daily, “That’s a tough one! With Ranbir, there’s nothing someone really needs to spy on or find out. That guy is like a khuli kitaab! He’s a very open person, but I want to see what kind of food he eats because he always manages to look so good.” It’s quite hard to digest that Ranbir and Alia haven’t had food together considering they spent fairly good amount of time “prepping” for ‘Brahmastra’.

Zaira opens up on battle with depression, suicidal thoughts, panic attacks in post

'Dangal' star and national award-winning actor Zaira Wasim has opened up about her battle with depression, saying she needs a "complete break" from work and school to figure things out. In a lengthy post on Instagram, the 17-year-old actor said she has been suffering from the illness for the past four years, during which she even had "suicidal thoughts", but did not share it with anyone due to the stigma around the issue. "I'm writing this to admit and confess that I, for a very long time have been suffering from severe anxiety and depression. It's almost been four years and I've always been embarrassed and scared to admit it not only because of the stigma that goes around with the word depression with it but most importantly because of always being told that 'You're too young to be depressed' or 'It's just a phase'," Zaira wrote in her post. Zaira said the "awful phase" has put her in situations the actor never wished or chose to be in. "Perhaps it could've been 'just a phase' but this awful phase has put me in situations I never wished or chose to be in.

Alia Bhatt is on cloud nine since her movie ‘Raazi’ has received thunderous response at the cinema halls. The Meghna Gulzar directorial is based on Indian spy Sehmat Khan. DNA too asked Alia to spy on some celebrities. When asked about her alleged exes, who also happen to be her former co-stars, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, the actress said she wants to know if they are finding time for something they loved to do. About Varun Dhawan, she mentioned, “I’m shooting with him right now (for Kalank) and VD manages to transform his body, within a week. I’m curious to learn how he does that. One day, he will be looking a certain way and then suddenly, his abs will start popping from somewhere. Kya chal raha hai!” We can see Varun’s workout videos almost everyday, so we kind of know ‘kya chal raha hai’, but coming to Sidharth, that’s where Alia should be making the statement because it is her desire to know if Sid has got back to doing what he liked to do.

Rafa Nadal eager to play down Dominic Thiem hiccup at Madrid Open

Sunvilla Samachar (English Daily)

SPORTS ROUNDUP

We are not dead yet, we believe we can beat anyone, says AB de Villiers

Lewis Hamilton's time, on a track that has been smoothed and resurfaced since last year, was nearly three seconds quicker than his 2017 time of 1:19.149.

Madrid : Claycourt king Rafael Nadal has played down the significance of his quarter-final defeat by Austrian Dominic Thiem at the Madrid Open — a loss that ended a year-long winning streak on clay and cost him the world number one ranking. The 31-year-old Spaniard looked unstoppable going into his Friday clash with fifth seed Thiem, having won 50 consecutive sets on the red dirt, but he was well beaten 7-5 6-3. Coincidentally, it was Thiem who last beat Nadal on clay, at last year’s Rome Masters, shortly before the Spaniard rampaged to a 10th French Open title without dropping a set. However, Nadal quickly slapped down any notion that world number seven Thiem knows the secret of beating the greatest ever

exponent of claycourt tennis. “Well, three weeks ago I beat him 6-0 6-3. I don’t know if that’s a tough player or not. I don’t think it’s that way,” Nadal, who also beat Thiem en route to the Roland Garros title last year, told reporters. “I think it has just been a match where he was better than me, same as a few weeks ago I was better than him. “If he beats me three times in a row, maybe we can say he reads my game and can beat me.” Nadal will now focus on next week’s tournament in Rome where, should he win the title, he could reclaim the number one ranking from great rival Roger Federer who has opted to sit out the claycourt season in preparation for Wimbledon and beyond. Not that the Mallorcan will lose any sleep over it.

Lewis Hamilton ends Sebastian Vettel’s pole run at Spanish Grand Prix Barcelona : Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton seized pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday in a Mercedes one-two that ended Sebastian Vettel’s bid for a fourth in a row. The Briton, leading his Ferrari rival by four points after four races, put in two blistering final laps at an overcast Circuit de Catalunya to take the top slot in a track record one minute 16.173 seconds. Finnish team mate Valtteri Bottas was second, in 1:16.213, with Vettel third and 0.132 off the pace. “I needed this pole, I haven’t had a pole for a while. It’s a Mercedes one-two,” said Hamilton, whose last pole was in the Australian season-opener in March. The four times world champion’s time, on a track that has been smoothed and resurfaced since last year, was nearly three seconds quicker than his 2017 time of 1:19.149. The Briton has now been on pole in Spain for three years in a row and four of the last five. Saturday’s was the record 74th of his career and came at a track that has historically favoured the top qualifier.

Bangalore : Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore had a terrible campaign in the ongoing season of Indian Premier League. After their 5-run defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad in their previous encounter, RCB have slipped down to the 7th position in the table, with just 3 wins in 10 games, and are at a position where they need to win all their match to somehow script a historic comeback in the tournament. But in spite of the odds, RCB batsman AB de Villiers believes that the side can still make it through Playoffs. Writing in a column on Times of India, The 34-year old further said that his side have let themselves down. “We have assembled a strong squad and we have played well at times and yet, in crucial moments, usually in the closing overs with both bat and ball, we have let ourselves down badly, won

only three matches out of 10 and now find ourselves on the brink of elimination.” But the right-handed batsman went on to add that RCB are not dead yet and can still find a way to get back. “And yet, and yet … we’re not dead yet. There is no doubt that we need to win all four of our four remaining league matches — against DD at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday, against KXIP in Indore on Monday, then at home to SRH on Thursday and, finally, against RR at Jaipur on Saturday 19 May,” he said. He further added that the players in the franchise continue to believe that they can beat any team. “We know we have let people down, yet we know we retain a chance of sneaking into the knockout phase, and we still believe we can beat anyone,” he said. RCB will face DD at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.

Gujarat: For ‘research on cow vigilantism’, Army to get first batch prof from Japan meets Una flogging victims of ‘Made in Gujarat’ Rajkot : PROFESSOR NAKAMIZO Kazuya, an associate visiting professor at Kyoto University in Japan, visited Mota Samadhiyala village near Una town of Gir Somnath district on Friday and met some of the victims who were flogged, allegedly by cow vigilantes, for skinning a dead cow in 2016. Professor Kazuya told The Indian Express that he was visiting Mota Samadhiyala to understand the Una atrocities and its fallout for his research project on cow vigilantism in India. “My mission is to research about the Una incident and how the Dalit movement developed here after the incident. I am working on gau rakshaks and I have been in places like Madhya Pradesh, UP and Bihar also. But there, gau rakshaks are against Muslims. In case of Una, it is against Dalits. This aspect is also very important to understand… these gau rakshaks… I don’t

have invited them to visit the site and then we will take this up further… They are planning to come in June,” he added. This development comes immediately after the state government proposed to set up the world’s largest solar park of 5000MW at Dholera. “The rates of solar power have gone below Rs 3 per unit and it makes a lot of sense to store this power that is available only in day-time,” the IAS officer said. Dholera SIR is biggest of the eight smart cities proposed to be built on the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh), Jodhpur and Khushkhera Bhiwadi Neemrana (Rajasthan), Aurangabad (Maharashtra),

Entitlement cards to be issued to private land owners losing land for Bullet train project Gandhinagar : In order to allay apprehensions regarding land acquisition for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) will be issuing “entitlement cards” that will carry details of the compensation awarded to each of the 6000 private land owners whose property will be acquired for the project. “Land acquisition has many steps. Now we are almost in the last step of joint measurement survey. Compensation will be decided once the joint measurement survey is over. We have decided the entitlement matrix philosophically, which is more than what is provided in the (Land Acquisition) Act. For example, we will be giving them 25 percent extra for the terms of the consent. There is lot of compensation for Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) and so we are entitlement matrix. Once the joint measurement survey is done, we will know what kind of compensation an individual will get,” Achal Khare, managing director of NHSRCL said while interacting with mediapersons on the sidelines of a lecture organised at IIT-Gandhinagar on Saturday. “To allay their apprehensions, we will be providing each land loser an entitlement card which will have his bank account number and all the items against which he is going to get compensation.

Donald Trump’s prescription to reduce drug prices takes small steps Washington : President Donald Trump’s longpromised plan to bring down drug prices would mostly spare the pharmaceutical industry he previously accused of “getting away with murder.” Instead he focuses on private competition and more openness to reduce America’s prescription pain. In Rose Garden remarks at the White House Friday,

Trump called his plan the “most sweeping action in history to lower the price of prescription drugs for the American people.” But it does not include his campaign pledge to use the massive buying power of the government’s Medicare program to directly negotiate lower prices for seniors. That idea has long been supported by Democrats but is a non-

starter for drugmakers and most Republicans in Congress. Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas dismissed Trump’s plan as “a sugar-coated nothing pill.” The administration will pursue a raft of old and new measures intended to improve competition and transparency in the notoriously complex drug pricing system.
