Ahmedabad: On Saturday, April 14, 2018, India would be celebrating the 127th birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Popularly known as Babasaheb, he was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist Movement and campaigned against social discrimination against untouchables since he was a Dalit too and also supported the rights of women and labour. However, Ambedkar’s importance in Indian history cannot just be limited to a person who championed for the rights of the poor, downtrodden and lower caste people. He can easily be remembered as “The Father of the Constitution of India” and the man who fought for the oppressed in the country. He was the principal architect of our Constitution and a founding father of the Republic of India. “Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar is a yug purush (man of the era) who lives in the hearts and minds of crores of Indians.

‘I used to call the BJP MLA Bhaiyya until Kathua gangrape-murder case: SC he raped me,’ says 17-year-old Unnao girl takes suo motu cognisance of alleged Unnao rape case: Don’t just detain, arrest BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, Allahabad HC directs CBI : CBI detains MLA

Allahabad : The families of the Unnao rape victim and BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar once enjoyed “cordial relations”. Their houses were opposite each other’s in Makhi village, and the victim and her siblings used to address the MLA as “Bhaiyya”. Until last June, when she visited the MLA’s house with a relative after he offered her a “job opportunity”. That was when everything went wrong, said the victim in an interview to The Indian Express in which she spoke about the link between the two families and the sequence of events that led to her alleged rape last year. “It was June 4 last year. I was asked to go inside a room, where he raped me. Later, I was told that my father and family would be killed if I opened my mouth. I did not speak about it to anyone until I was kidnapped

by some of his people a few days later, on June 11. They gangraped me for a few days and sold me to someone from whom I was recovered,” claimed the 17-year-old victim. On Thursday, police registered an FIR against Sengar in connection with the alleged gangrape after the UP government decided to hand over the probe to the CBI. Police charged Sengar under various sections of the IPC and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. “Hum sab unhen Bhaiyya kehte the. Humare bade papa unke sath the. Kabhi-Kabhi woh (MLA) ghar aate the aur daadi se kehte the ki anda fry karke khilao, toh daadi unhe banake khilati thi (All of us used to call him brother. The elder brother of my father was with him. Sometimes, the MLA used to come home and ask

my grandmother to prepare egg fry for him, and she used to do it),” said the victim. Thursday’s FIR was registered days after the victim’s father died in judicial custody, with police arresting Atul Singh Sengar, the MLA’s brother, for allegedly beating him up. According to the victim, as soon as she returned home after the alleged gangrape last year, she was shifted to Delhi where her uncle lives. “It was at their home in Delhi that I first shared details of the entire incident with my aunt, who then informed my

uncle,” said the victim. “On August 17, 2017, my uncle and I went to Lucknow and submitted an application to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his residence. He gave it to some others standing with him but nothing happened. Neither me nor my father could come back to the village,” said the victim, adding that she dropped out of school after Class VI about five years ago, “like other girls due to constant harassment by local boys”. “When nothing happened even after meeting the Chief Minister personally, I wrote applications to the President, Prime Minister, the UP DGP, seeking help. But nothing happened, I was instead advised by policemen to leave the MLA out of it,” she claimed. But when she heard about her father being beaten up last week, she decided to take the next train to Lucknow to meet the Chief Minister again.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the victims will definitely get justice. “Incidents being discussed since past two days

cannot be part of a civilised society. As a country, as a society we all are ashamed of it. I want to assure the country that no culprit will be spared, complete justice will be done. Our daughters will definitely get justice,” said Modi during the inauguration of BR Ambedkar memorial in New Delhi. The prime minister added that such incidents shake human sensibilities. “Such incidents, be it in any state of the country, shake

our sensibilities. I want to assure the nation that no culprit will be spared. Justice will be done. We all need to come together in fight against such evil of the society,” said Modi Earlier, Modi’s silence on the issue was heavily criticised by the Opposition with Congress chief Rahul Gandhi saying the prime minister not uttering a word on the issue is unacceptable. conduct of lawyers after strike call

Kathua gangrape-murder case: The Supreme Court had asked a lawyer to bring materials on record to take judicial note of a strike call given by Kathua and Jammu and Kashmir bar associations in relation to the gangrape and killing of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu region

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Friday took suo motu cognisance of the alleged conduct of lawyers after a strike call given by the Kathua and Jammu and Kashmir Bar Associations in relation to the Kathua gangrape and murder case. The top court also issued a notice to the Bar Council of India and Jammu Bar Association in the matter. Earlier in the day, the apex court had asked lawyer P V Dinesh to bring materials on record to take judicial note of a strike call given by Kathua and Jammu and Kashmir bar associations in relation to the gangrape and

killing of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu region. The top court bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked Dinesh to furnish some material with regard to the actions of the bar bodies for enabling it to take suo motu judicial note of the strike call. Dinesh referred to the ‘unfortunate’ decisions of the local bar that had allegedly come in support of the people who had gangraped and killed the minor in Kathua. The minor girl, who belonged to the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community, had disappeared from near her home in the forests next to

Rasana village in Kathua, 90 km from here, on January 10. A week later, her body was found in the same area, and medical examination pointed towards sexual assault. The rape and murder has sent shockwaves in the country with politicians, celebrities, and sportspersons voicing their outrage over the incident. Chilling details of the case have come to light and there is a clamour to hand out the maximum punishment to the guilty. The body of the girl was found in the forests at Rassana a week after she went missing while grazing ponies in the woods. The Crime Branch’s investigations found that she was heavily sedated and raped repeatedly by a retired revenue official Sanji Ram along with his son Vishal and nephew. It is suspected that the motive behind the crime was to drive away the nomadic Muslim Bakherwal community.

Smriti Irani on Rahul Gandhi’s candle light protest: He once stood in support of Gayatri Prasad Prajapati

New Delhi : Union Minister Smriti Irani on Friday lashed out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi for holding a candlelight march to protest against the Unnao and Kathua rape cases and reminded him of his alleged support to a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader who had been accused of raping a minor girl and her mother in Uttar Pradesh. “Rahul Gandhi earlier stood in support of Gayatri Prasad Prajapati. It’s just his compulsion to take a stand this time but Amethi knows the truth. I have faith that justice will be provided,” she told news agency ANI earlier in the day. The minister was referring to the case in which the SP leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati had been accused of allegedly raping a minor girl and her mother. Modi's fast pulls a fast one on Congress

PM Modi has done well by taking the ritual out of his token fast to protest against the Opposition logjam in Parliament by using the day to travel to Chennai to address the Defence Expo being held there. That he faced protests over the Centre's inaction in the Cauvery water dispute is beside the point. But he has broken the practice of sitting in a fast, often disrupting life, by attending to his official engagement. Modi perhaps would have realised the oddity of disrupting his own work in the name of fasting, which was meant to protest the disruption of parliament. Modi's call for the fast, which the BJP MPs and leaders observed throughout the country, is also in contrast to a fast undertaken by the Congress party a few days ago, which incidentally brought the party more derision than appreciation. Pictures of celebratory breakfast to begin the fast, in which Delhi Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Maken was seen enjoying a plate of chhole bhature to see him through the 5-hour abstinence not only embarrassed his party, but fired the imagination of the social media. Harping on the total washout of the budget session, Modi launched a scathing attack on Congress, saying 'a handful of people who were unable to come to power in 2014 do not want the country to progress'. It was a theme that could strike a chord, as people have got disgusted with how parliament functioned during the budget session, considered to be one of the most important sessions in the parliamentary calendar. Vociferous protests by erstwhile NDA ally Telugu Desam over special status to Andhra Pradesh, the Punjab National Bank scam and the Cauvery water dispute devoured almost the entire second leg of the session that began on March 5. MPs belonging to the NDA used the disruption to score a point by announcing that they were forgoing the salary and allowances for 23 days, lost due to the ruckus, as the money was meant for serving the people. They did have a point, although the selective wisdom in action could not have been lost on them, lessening the impact. It was the same story in most of the recent sessions. The winter session saw the acrimony between Treasury and Opposition benches rob 34 hours of Rajya Sabha's and 15 hours of Lok Sabha's working time, with an estimated loss of Rs 73.5 crore of tax payers' money. The monsoon session, held towards the end of last year, saw both houses lose about 55 hours of productive work, which cost the public exchequer an estimated Rs 82.5 crore. At some point of time people are bound to ask whether all this money is worth spending on a parliament which does everything except debate and discussion. The PM famously promised 10 million jobs and instead offered pakoda-selling as an alternative, further leading one to doubt the real intent of his "na khaunga, na khane doonga" promise. Damning figures on the employment crisis only go on to strengthen the doubts. According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), an independent think tank, as many as 31 million jobless people were looking for employment opportunities as of February this year. The unemployment rate in India — nearly two-thirds of the jobless are under 35 years old — hit its highest level in 16 months in March at 6.23 per cent. So, when the prime minister of the country and his huge brigade of supporters decide to stage a hunger strike to save Indian democracy and expose the Opposition's anti-development agenda, it surely seems like he is pulling a fast one - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara on us.

Chunky Panday believes daughter Ananya was born for Dharma

Mumbai : In conversation with a daily, Chunky Panday expressed how he is already feeling like a star as Ananya is set to work with Karan Johar. When asked if he was as excited for his first film, he reportedly said that he was initially nervous. Talking about Ananya’s debut, he professed that Ananya auditioned for it even before she had completed her 12th and he thinks she knew it quite soon that she was selected for it. He even added that Ananya is a brilliant student and that she had even enrolled in the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and New York University (NYU) but since the movie was in the pipeline, they decided to

delay her admission for a year. However, he reportedly laughed it out saying that ‘now, it remains to be seen if she ever goes there’. He further emphasized how Ananya was quite clear that she wanted to get into acting when she completed her 10th, but since she was a good student, she had decided that she would never neglect studies. He reportedly said that she probably got to know that she may be in ‘SOTY 2’, just two days before her 12th exam began. Talking about an opportunity to work with Karan Johar, he reportedly averred that they couldn’t have asked for anything better. He believes that Ananya was born for Dharma.

Bollywood-Hollywood Priyanka Chopra not reuniting with Salman Khan for Bharat. Will Katrina Kaif step in? with the script of 'Bharat' and that the lady has apparently given her nod to the project. However, according to a report in Mumbai Mirror, Priyanka is longer a part of the team and the makers are now considering to cast Katrina Kaif for the role. The

report further added that Zafar apparently wants to recreate the magic of his last release 'Tiger Zinda Hai' that starred Salman and Katrina together. However, there has been no official confirmation on the same. It is to be noted that this isn't the

first time when Katrina's name is being speculated for the role. In fact, in February this year, buzz was there that Zafar had reportedly roped in Katrina for his film. However, the filmmaker took to Twitter to clear the air on the report.

Mumbai : What would drive a young film actress in her 20s to strip in the middle of a busy area and squat in protest on the pavement with TV cameras whirring busily all around her? Why would she publicly announce this planned protest on a TV channel in advance? Why did the TV channel in question egg her on for days to speak about the casting couch and the ill-treatment she was allegedly subjected to by members of the Telugu film industry? Was it a TRPgarnering exercise by the TV channel? Or was she just trying to attract attention because no film roles were coming her way? Was it a well thought out move?

Or an act of desperation? Had the toxic sexism in the male-dominated industry finally driven her into a corner where her own public shaming no longer mattered? Did she not realise that she might never get a role in the Telugu film industry again? Sri Reddy has acted in three films. Before that, she worked as an anchor on TV. According to one of the interviews she gave to the TV channel, which has been constantly featuring her over the last couple of weeks, when she decided to become a film actress, she worked really hard to get into shape. She desperately wanted to fit into the required mould which

would, she hoped, get her roles. She even underwent expensive Botox treatment, had her body sculpted and did whatever else was needed to project herself as a woman who could do 'glamourous' roles in Telugu films. Glamour in the context of the South Indian film industry is a synonym for hot and sexy. It is used as a label to describe a woman who is willing to bare her curves on screen and do seductive roles, like for instance, a night club dancer. However, 'glamourous' roles are not always roles unto themselves. Even top heroines often have a 'glamour' component incorporated into their roles.

On Sri Reddy's protest, and the need for 'bad behaviour' which exposes how women are treated in cinema

New Delhi: Actor Salman Khan has been shooting extensively for the last leg of Remo D'Souza highaction drama 'Race 3'. Only a day ago, he was spotted on the sets along with co-stars Jacqueline

Fernandez and Daisy Shah. And as per latest reports, after wrapping up Remo D'Souza's film, the 52-year-old actor will take up Ali Abbas Zafar's next project, titled 'Bharat'. While the

film is set to go on floors soon, reports say that Ali Abbas Zafar has still not finalised the leading lady opposite Salman. Earlier, it was speculation that Priyanka Chopra has been approached by the makers

Alia Bhatt talks about her transformation into a spy

Mumbai : Film buffs can’t stop raving about Alia Bhatt ever since the trailer of Meghna Gulzar’s espionage thriller Raazi was released earlier this week. In Raazi, which is inspired by Harinder Sikka’s novel Calling Sehmat, Alia plays a Kashmiri woman who puts her life in danger to serve the nation. After the trailer and the posters of the film, the makers have now released a video titled ‘Decoding Sehmat – Making of a spy’. In the video, we see Alia’s transformation from a beautiful young girl to a strong woman for whom nothing comes before the nation. From how

she trained for the action sequences to her learning the Morse code, a technique of transmitting secret messages, everything has been revealed in the threeminutes long video. “We were making a film on a spy from a different era. So the modes of communication were very different from what we know today. Morse is basically the dots and dashes. It is basically an electrical pulse transmitted through radio frequency,” explained filmmaker Meghna Gulzar who has earlier given Bollywood a gripping thriller in 2015 release Talvar. Alia who wears that intense look of

a spy with perfection talks about her transformation and said, “There were a lot of spy activities that I had to do on the sets and one of them was morse code. The film has a lot of intel that I transfer through morse. I actually had to memorise the codes and ended up mugging up all the codes. The terrifying part was when I had to drive a Jonga jeep. I have never driven in my life ever before so I was a little nervous about it because there is a very important sequence where I had to drive that car. My driving lessons happened in the basement of the Dharma Productions at 7 in the morning.”

As India’s young guns make their mark, inspirational Tejaswini Sawant wins one for the old guard GNS Ag / New Delhi: Tejaswini Sawant was over the moon in 2010 when she bagged the World Championship gold in the 50m prone and was primed to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. But the weight of expectations pulled her down and things went into a downward spiral with responsibilities at home taking her attention away from the sport. Before she knew it, the young brigade was challenging the established stars and that added pressure to the problem. But the 37-yearold put all those frustrating moments behind her to become India’s oldest medallist so far in this edition of the Games. She won the 50m prone silver on Thursday and followed it up with the Rifle 3-position gold and a Games Record on Friday. This was Sawant’s third gold in the Commonwealth Games over four editions but this would probably be the sweetest one. Her day job as an officer in Maharashtra’s

sports department did not distract her. She kept her faith in coach Kuheli Gangulee, worked hard on the mental aspect of her preparation and then, turned things around when it mattered the most.“My event was at the latter stages of the Games and I had to ensure that the pressure of my own expectations does not build up on me. So I kept myself away from any interaction even with my family members and just focused on my shooting,” said Sawant, who did not even start her phone to accept the wishes of her family members after the silver medal-winning performance. This was probably the easier part. The more difficult part was to keep faith in her own abilities when things weren’t going her way. She even missed out on the Indian team spot in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. “The break (which extended to a couple of months) pegged me back by almost six months and I missed out on the 2014

Commonwealth Games as most of the trials were in 2013. By that time, the young shooters had started performing and it meant that I started taking more pressure of performance,” Sawant told The Field from Gold Coast. “I started performing well in 2015 and even bagged a medal in a tournament in Czech Republic in 2015. But then I got married and needed time to adjust to the new life and

that took time,” said Sawant, the elder of the three siblings who had put her personal life on the backburner to take care of the family ever since her father Ravindra fell ill. The former naval officer, who was instrumental in getting his daughter follow her shooting passion, passed away in 2010 a few months before she became the first Indian woman to be crowned world champion. Things went downhill from that

point on but the one thing that remained a constant during this period of ups and downs is Sawant’s relationship with her Kolkata-based coach Gangulee. During this period, the two worked hard on the two .22 events – Prone and 3-position – and the pupil insists she never felt the need to work with a foreign coach during the period. “I don’t think that thought ever crossed my mind,” Sawant said when asked about whether she tried working with a foreign coach to resurrect her career. Though she had worked with Laszlo Szucsak in her formative years, Sawant has stuck to working with Gangulee, who is still an active shooter, since then. Gangulee was with her during the Commonwealth Shooting Championship in Brisbane last year as a team member and that helped the 48-year-old plan her ward’s pre-match preparation to the minutest details because of that. “I was not there this week but I knew the range very well,

Manika Batra, Mouma Das Claim Silver In Women's Doubles Table Tennis

GNS Ag / New Delhi: Indian paddlers Manika Batra and Mouma Das claimed the silver medal in women's doubles category at the 21st Commonwealth Games on Friday. The Indian duo was outplayed 0-3 (5-11, 4-11, 5-11) by Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu of Singapore in the gold medal clash. Unforced errors and some aggressive game from Singapore kept India on the back foot throughout the match. Right from the start, Indian paddlers never looked in the contention as Manika and Mouma failed to match the skill and tenacity of the their opponents. In all the three games, Mouma and Manika were outclassed in every

department. In the other match, Sutirtha Mukherjee and Pooja Saharabudhe lost the bronze medal match 1-3 (13-15, 7-11, 11-8, 7-11) to

Ho Ying and Lyne Karen of Malaysia. The Indian duo, however, put up a fight but failed to match the pace of their opponents.

that his team could have started attacking earlier. For the most part of the first three quarters, India let Australia dictate the pace. The Indian defenders, however, did a remarkable job, conceding just one goal in the five field goal opportunities that

Australia created. All three of the Hockeyroos’ penalty corners, they foiled. But that one goal from Grace Stewart’s stick was enough for Australia to enter the final. “We are all very disappointed that we could not qualify for the gold medal

match because it was our target for the Commonwealth Games,” said Rani after the game. “But my team can take the positives from their performance against a strong Australian side who were playing in front of their home crowd.”

Rajkot: The Junagadh Motor Accident Claim Tribunal has awarded Rs 47.9 lakh compensation to the family of a man killed in a road accident about 10 years ago. The tribunal ordered an insurance company to pay the amount with eight per cent interest and deposit it to the tribunal within 30 days. The interest amount will be nearly Rs 40 lakh. According to the case detail, 32-year-old Deven Hudka was crushed to death

by a speeding bus coming from wrong side when he was on riding his bike near Vanthli in the district on 25 February 2008. Deven was the dealer of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). He got his dealership in Vanthli just two years before his death. Deven did not file his income tax return and on that basis, the insurance company denied the claim of income put before the court by his family. The family had demanded Rs 1.5 crore compensation.

Their lawyer Narendra Mulchandani said “victim’s father filed two year’s income tax return together which was allowed as per the law, we submitted the evidence of commission he received from IOC and convinced the court that he was earning nearly Rs 3 lakh per year. As per Supreme Court’s order, 40 per cent increase in the income was calculated and considering victim’s age, the court ordered to pay this compensation.”

In most states, the crime rate against SC/ST population corresponds with the general crime rates. However, statistics show that Gujarat stands in stark contrast.

Madhya Pradesh accounts for a large proportion of crimes against SC/STs in 2016 (27.8%), followed by Rajasthan (18.2%) and Odisha (10.4%). States with a high number of crimes against STs like Madhya Pradesh show a low number of crimes in metropolitan cities such as Indore, which reports only 0.3 percent of total crimes against STs in the state. Strikingly, Jaipur accounts for over half the number of crimes in metropolitan cities (55.3%). It is followed by Hyderabad with a proportion of 13.2 percent. The judiciary is the body in charge of enforcing the rights of SC/STs under the Act, by conducting a fair trial and convicting the persecutor in case of guilt. Conviction rates for cases involving SC/ST atrocities are slightly below the AllIndia rate (21%) for STs (20.8%), and are significantly higher in cases involving SCs (25%). Conviction rates are particularly low in states of Karnataka, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. However, there are still a large number of pending cases involving SC/ST atrocities, showing that justice is being delayed. States like Bihar show a very high pendency rate for both SC and ST cases (95.9% and 94%). Almost all states have a pendency percentage above 80%, representing an extreme backlog across the nation.

GNS Ag / New Delhi: Gujarat has witnessed an increase in the number of cases of violence reported by SC/STs when compared to the general population from 20142016, according to latest data released by National Crime Records Bureau. The crime rate against Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (12) was 140 per cent higher than crimes reported by the general category (5). States such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu also show this trend, albeit very marginally. In most states, the crime rate against SC/ST population corresponds with the general crime rates. However, statistics show that Gujarat stands in stark contrast. Madhya Pradesh is an outlier, wherein the violence against SC/STs is almost 42.4 per cent lower than that of its crime rate against general population, showing a lower number of cases reported by SC/STs in comparison to the total number of crimes reported. Rajasthan also has a significantly low crime rate for SC/ST violence.

Similarly, states of Karnataka, Bihar and Maharashtra show comparatively less violence. Since 2014, crimes against SCs have increased one percent overall, although there was a steep rise of 5.5 percent in 2016. As per 2016 statistics, Uttar Pradesh accounts for over a quarter (25.6 percent) of these crimes in 2016, followed by Bihar and Rajasthan. This is further reflected in the fact that their respective capital cities constitute almost 45 percent of the total crimes against SCs among all 19 metropolitan cities. States with low prevalence of violence include West Bengal (0.3%), Jharkhand (1.3%) and Kerala (2%). Coimbatore and Chennai have emerged with the lowest prevalence of violence against SCs amongst all metropolitan cities, with 0.2% and 0.6% respectively. Since 2014, crimes against STs have seen as overall decrease of 3.8 percent, with a significant drop of 8 percent in 2015. However, there was a rise of 4.6 percent in 2016. Shrinking reservoirs in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat could soon lead to drought: Report

Gandhinagar: Shrinking reservoirs in India, Iraq, Morocco and Spain could lead to taps running dry soon, sparking another “Day Zero” water crisis, an organisation that developed a satellite early warning system for the world’s 5 lakh dams said on Wednesday. The World Resources Institute said that water levels in reservoirs in these countries can fall for several reasons, including drought, water mismanagement and climate change. The term “Day Zero”

has gained significance since the water crisis in South Africa came to the fore. The term refers to the day on which municipal water supply in the country’s Cape Town city, which is facing a drought, would be switched off, as reservoir levels fall below 13.5% of capacity. The World Resources Institute

The World Resources Institute, which has created a satellite early warning system for dams, said Morocco, Iraq and Spain were also threatened by water scarcity.

said satellite images showed that the peak water level in Madhya Pradesh’s Indira Sagar reservoir in 2017 was 33% lower than average. This was the result of poor rains in the region, the organisation said. The lack of water in the reservoir also impacted its ability to release it to the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat, the

report said. The Indira Sagar reservoir supplied only 34% of the water that was due to the Sardar Sarovar reservoir in 2017. This affected the ability of the Gujarat dam to produce electricity, as the structure requires 110.8 metres of water to produce power, but had only 105.5 metres as of March 15 this year. In March, the

Gujarat government stopped water supply from the Sardar Sarovar Dam for irrigation, and said the remaining stock of water would be used for drinking purposes. Water storage in 91 major reservoirs of the country in the week that ended on March 15 was at 32% of their total storage capacity, the Central Water Commission said. This was 12% lower than the storage in the same period in 2017 and almost 10% lower than the average of the past 10 years. The BBC had in February

listed 11 cities that were at risk of running out of water. Bengaluru was the only Indian city to make the list, but a survey of 28 cities across 14 states and one Union Territory found Indian homes on an average got water supply for only about 3.3 hours in a day. The surface area of Morocco’s Al Massira dam, the country’s second-largest reservoir, has shrunk by over 60% in the last three years, the World Resources Institute said. “While the reservoir’s levels keep decreasing, demand for

its water keeps increasing,” the report said. “Morocco’s urban water demand may increase by 60 to 100% in most large cities by 2050.” The reservoir impounded by Iraq’s Mosul dam has shrunk by more than 60% over the last three years, satellite images show. The institute blamed Turkey’s Southeast Anatolia Project and its 22 dams and 19 hydro power plants across the Tigris and Euphrates rivers – on which millions of Iraqis rely for drinking water, irrigation, power and transportation –

as the main reason for the reduced flow of rivers into Iraq. In Spain, the surface area of the Buendia dam has shrunk by more than 60% over the last five years, the report said. It said that Spain suffered its worst drought in 60 years in 2006, the last time the water levels in the reservoir were so low. “ Experts say that droughts will likely become more frequent and severe in this region, and water stress is projected to increase in many parts of Spain by 2040,” the institute added.
