HC sets up panel to look into education scenario in TN

Madurai: The Madras High Court today set up a committee to look into the education scenario of Tamil Nadu and suggest measures to reduce incidence of violence and improve the emotional well-being and academic performance of students. The six-member committee comprising education department officials, academicians and experts in the field of psychiatry was constituted by justices S Vimala and T Krishnavalli of the Madurai bench. It set up the panel while hearing a habeas corpus petition seeking to produce a 19-year-old girl, who went missing. The girl, produced by the police in the court, said she had left home fearing that her father would admonish her for scoring low marks in the examinations. The committee would explore the education scenario in terms of examination system, parent-teacher interaction, support available to students (academic, psychological and mechanisms), strength of co-curricular activities, challenges faced by the children.

Chaos In Gujarat Assembly, Congress Lawmaker Throws Mic At BJP Leader Gandhinagar: Two Congress legislators were on Wednesday suspended for an unprecedented three years from the Gujarat Assembly and another for one year after members came to blows over a demand for a discussion on the death of two children in Sabarmati's Ashram. Speaker Rajendra Trivedi suspended Pratap Dudhat and Amrish Der for three years and Baldev Thakore for a year following acrimonious scenes in the state assembly. The entire opposition Congress staged a walkout after the strong action by the Speaker. The disruptions erupted immediately after Question Hour as Congress MLA Vikram Madam sought to raise a point of order over the death of two children in the Ashram in 2008, even as Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Pradeepsinh Jadeja wanted a discussion on wastage of time in the House. Madam wanted to know whether the government intended to table the report of the commission entrusted to investigate the unfortunate incident. But the Speaker

CBI court discharges Maran brothers in illegal telephone exchange scam

Dayanidhi Maran was accused of having installed a private telephone exchange with 764 telephone lines at his residence to facilitate illegal uplink of SUN TV data, causing a loss of Rs 1.78 crore to state-run telecom majors BSNL and MTNL

New Delhi: Former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran have been discharged by a CBI court in an alleged illegal telephone exchange scam case. Special judge Natarajan said he was discharging all seven accused from the case as there was no prima facie evidence to prove the charges against them. In February this year, the CBI argued opposing the discharge petitions filed by Dayanidhi, Kalanithi Maran and others, saying there was prima facie material to proceed against them. Counsel for the Marans said they were innocent and had not caused any loss. Dayanidhi Maran was accused of having installed a private telephone exchange with 764 telephone lines at his residence to facilitate illegal uplink of SUN TV data, causing a loss of Rs 1.78 crore to state-run telecom majors BSNL,

Chennai and MTNL, Delhi. The CBI had alleged that an illegal private telephone exchange was set up at the city residence of Dayanidhi during 2004-06 when he was the telecom minister and it was used for the business transactions involving the Sun Network owned by his brother Kalanithi. Other accused who have been discharged are former BSNL general manager K Brahmanathan, former deputy general manager M P Velusamy, Dayanidhi Maran’s private secretary Gauthaman, and Sun TV officials. During the hearing of the discharge petitions, the Maran brothers and others argued that they were innocent and did not commit any irregularities as alleged by the prosecution. Senior counsel Kabil Sibal, who had appeared for the Maran brothers, had contended that the case was foisted on them.

A large number of lawmakers gathered at the centre of the house in Gujarat assembly and rivals jostled each other before the Speaker adjourned the proceedings

ruled that such points of order were not allowed. Another Congress MLA Ambrish Der joined Madam and started questioning the Speaker's ruling on the matter. As, one by one, other Congress MLAs also started asking the same question of the Speaker, there was chaos in the House and the atmosphere became tense. Apparently agitated over something told to him by BJP MLA Jagdish Panchal, Dudhat rushed from his place towards the treasury benches, grabbed a microphone from the desk and threw

it towards Jagdish Panchal. Fortunately, the microphone missed Panchal. Dudhat's action created a furore in the House as almost everybody got agitated and started shouting. This forced the Speaker to adjourn the House for 10 minutes, which was later extended till 2.30 p.m. Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel later told the media: "This is a shameful incident which has never happened in the history of Gujarat Assembly. Misdoings of Congress MLAs Vikram Madam, Pratap Dudhat and Ambrish Der have

been recorded by the CCTV cameras in the House and we are going to request the Speaker to make it accessible to the media.A "We are also going to request the Speaker to take strict action against the violent behaviour by the three opposition members. None of our MLAs were such violent or used any foul language." However, Dudhat said: "The BJP is trying to shift the people's attention from public issues like the death of children in Asaram Ashram. We, as opposition, have every right to know about such public issues. But our voices are being gagged. "For the last six to seven days, BJP MLA Jagdish Panchal has been uttering bad words and using foul language against me in the House. Today also, he spoke something bad about my mother which infuriated me and, in a spate of anger, I rushed towards him."

Stephen Hawking visited India for 16 days in 2001 - and it was a 'magnificent' tour

London: Renowned British physicist Professor Stephen Hawking, who shaped modern cosmology and inspired millions despite suffering from a life-threatening condition, died on Wednesday -- leaving millions in mourning globally. He was 76. His family released a statement in the early hours of Wednesday confirming his death at his home in Cambridge "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years," Hawking's children said in a statement. "His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you

UP bye-election results: Defeat in Yogi Adityanath’s Gorakhpur a shocker for BJP

New Delhi: In a major setback to the BJP, the saffron party lost Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats for which elections were held on March 11. The loss in Gorakhpur – a seat the party had retained for 27 years which included five consecutive terms by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath – has come as a bigger shock for the party. The Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after Yogi became the chief minister last year. Samajwadi Party’s Praveen Kumar Nishad won by 21,961 votes against BJP’s Upendra Dutt Shukla in Gorakhpur. In Phulpur, SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel registered a thumping win against BJP’s

Kaushlendra Singh Patel by a margin of 59,460 votes. Over confident of its victory in the run up to polls, the party found it hard to explain the loss. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, who had vacated the Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency after being elected to the Legislative council, said, “Phulpur pehli baar jite they.. Gorakhpur lagatar jeet rahe hain.. Jahan chuk hui use dekhenge. (Had won Phulpur for the first time. We had

been winning Gorakhpur continuously. Will review wherever we went wrong),” Maurya told reporters as defeat of the party became clear on both the seats. It may be mentioned that while Phulpur was won by BJP for the first time in 2014 since independence, the party has been winning Gorakhpur since 1991. Maurya alleged that while BSP-SP announced support, even Congress, which had fielded its candidates gave indirect support to the SP candidate. He said that if in 2019 or 2022, the opposition comes together in the similar manner then party would also form its strategy accordingly.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed all 32 intervention petitions in the Ramjanmabhumi-Babri Masjid land dispute case. Applications of Shyam Benegal, Aparna Sen and Teesta Setalvad were part of the intervention applications that were rejected by the Supreme Court. The Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices Ashok Bhushan and Abdul Nazeer has also directed the registry not to entertain any intervention

applications in the matter, which is also popularly known as Ayodhya case. The Supreme Court also rejected the intervention plea of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy. The court, however, ordered the revival of Swamy's disposed plea that had sought enforcement of his fundamental right to worship at Ram Temple in Ayodhya. During the hearing, Swamy told the apex court that "my fundamental rights are higher than my property rights". The court is hearing

a total of 13 appeals filed against the 2010 judgment of the Allahabad high court in four civil suits. They challenge the Allahabad high court verdict that mandated a three-way division of the disputed 2.77-acre site. The Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court had ruled in favour of partitioning the land equally among three parties-the Sunni Waqf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and the 'Ram Lalla' (infant Lord Ram), represented by the Hindu Mahasabha.

New Delhi: Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday his government would soon clear the Delhi Metro’s long-pending Phase-IV project, while indicating that there were “issues of financial viability” on some of its routes. Kejriwal said this in the presence of Union minister for housing and urban affairs (independent charge) Hardeep Singh Puri, along with whom, he ceremonially flagged off the Majlis ParkDurgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of the much-awaited Pink Line, from the Metro Bhawan here. “Metro is the lifeline of Delhi, and it is an important mode of transport for the city. The Delhi government will soon give clearance for the Phase-IV project. There

are issues of financial viability on some of the routes,” the chief minister said. On the last fare hike, Kejriwal said the Delhi government and the Centre should “sit together and find out a solution”. The newlyopened section, which has 12 stations, is part of the 59 km-long Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor (Pink Line - Line 7) of Delhi Metro’s Phase-III. A small segment of the Pink Line in the Trilokpuri area in east Delhi is also awaiting clearance due to some land issues and other related matters associated with the local people. On the Delhi Metro’s Phase IV project and rapid rail system connecting the national capital with Meerut, Puri had recently said that the AAP-led city government was “sitting on the project”.

For Hawking, the early diagnosis of his terminal disease ignited a fresh sense of purpose.

face brickbats and be 'the Neelakantha' consuming this poison, we will do so as our duty," said Patel on the banking frauds. In a speech at law university in Gujarat, RBI Governor Urjit Patel said "Market discipline mechanism for public sector banks is appreciably weaker

compared to that at private banks." He said that it is 'infeasible' for banking regulator to be in every nook and corner of banking activity to rule out frauds by being there. "Legal reforms are highly desirable to empower RBI to fully exercise same responsibilities that apply for public sector banks to private banks as well. Legal reforms are also desirable to empower RBI to ensure a level playing field in supervisory enforcement," Patel added. He said RBI needs to refocus on the bigger

issue of stressed assets resolution. The RBI chief suggested internal processes at PNB failed by allowing operational hazard to remain in place in spite of clear instructions to close it. Patel opined that criminal investigation of frauds and attached penalties can serve as an effective deterrence. "IBC with RBI's revised framework will help break promoterbank nexus, which has led to crony capitalism and the attendant NPA/ credit misallocation," he said.

Narendra Modi renews labour reforms push as jobs regain focus before elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dropped one of the most contentious elements of his proposed labour reforms, paving the way for his long-awaited industrial relations legislation to be introduced to India’s parliament by 6 April. Modi has been battling opposition’s attempt to paint him as a government that favours the business elite over the poor by moving to make it easier to hire and fire factory workers and buy farmers’ land. He’s also faced hostility from unions and his party allies since he first sought to reform labour laws after coming to power in 2014. While smaller changes have passed, the most crucial reforms have until now remained out of reach. India’s labour minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said in an interview on Tuesday the administration had abandoned the plan that would have allowed companies with as many as 300 workers to lay off staff without seeking the government’s permission, and would keep the current limit of 100. The changes are part of a process to streamline 44 different labour laws into four codes as the government pushes forward with its efforts to formalize the $2.3 trillion economy. Modi’s administration will introduce an industrial relations bill in the parliament session that ends on 6 April, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified. The bill, which seeks to ensure better packages for fired staff and longer notice periods by unions before announcing strikes, will be pushed as soon as it is cleared by the cabinet, the official said. Complex legislation has held back India’s industrial ambitions, despite programs such as ‘Make in India’ designed to stimulate domestic manufacturing. The manufacturing sector accounts for less than a fourth of GDP in Asia’s third-largest economy where more than 90% workers are part of the so-called informal sector. The government’s move to overhaul labour laws, even in a diluted form, is a step in the right direction, said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Care Ratings Ltd. “Land and labor are two major reforms which the government has not taken because both are very controversial.” India has no reliable data to assess how many jobs were created in the one of the world’s fastest growing large economies. Still, the labour ministry’s figures released 12 March show India added 136,000 workers across eight sectors between July to October 2017, while the latest private surveys reflect a bleak picture. In the week ended 25 February, India’s jobless rate rose to 6.1% compared to 5% in January, the highest monthly rate in the past 15 months, data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy showed. Modi swept to power in May 2014 with the biggest electoral mandate in three decades after promising to create 10 million jobs each year for the country’s burgeoning youth population. Over the last four years, his government has succeeded in tweaking some laws. India has amended rules for payment of wages, bo- - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara nuses, maternity benefits. Editor

How To Borrow From The Boys: A Style Lesson From Anushka Sharma And Virat Kohli

Mumbai : Regardless of how jam-packed your closet may be, sometimes the most comfortable clothes aren't even in there; Anushka Sharma might agree with us on that. At the airport recently, she was spotted wearing a white Zara t-shirt with the caption 'State Of Mind' along with an oversized grey pullover and distressed jeans. She paired this comfortable look with black sneaker boots and a matching backpack slung over her shoulder. It seems like her husband and Indian cricket hero Virat Kohli wore the very same t-shirt back in 2016. Did you know Radhika Apte had once slapped a Tamil star?

Amitabh Bachchan’s Thugs of Hindostan look that wasn’t

Mumbai : It is not every day that you have an epic in the making with the choicest pick of stars from the industry. So Thugs of Hindostan -- starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh – is the centre of a lot of speculation. The looks of the four stars are awaited and every scrap of information that lands goes viral almost instantaneously. So, on a day that Amitabh Bachchan’s fans got to know that their favourite actor was unwell and was under the supervision of a team of doctors from Mumbai, they also saw a picture of the actor ostensibly dressed in the Thugs of Hindostan look on social media. What helped the picture gain virality was a statement by Jaya Bachchan that Big B’s ill health was due to the heavy costume he is donning for the film. “Amitji is fine. He has pain in the back and neck... The costumes are very heavy, so there’s some pain, otherwise he is fine,” she told reporters outside

Mumbai: Radhika Apte is a no-nonsense woman. If a co-star tries to get too close for comfort, trust Radhika to put him in his place. This is exactly what happened on the sets of one of her Tamil films. The actress made this revelation on a chat show hosted by Neha Dhupia, reports Mumbai Mirror. Recalling the unpleasant

experience, Radhika said, "It was my first day on the set and a famous South actor started to tickle my feet. I was stunned as we'd never met before and I instinctively slapped him." Radhika made her Tamil debut in Prakash Raj's Dhoni in 2012. She has since gone on to star in more Kollywood films, including the blockbuster Kabali,

in which she was paired opposite Rajinikanth. On the work front, Radhika was last seen on the big screen in R Balki's Pad Man opposite Akshay Kumar. The film raked in over Rs 80 crore at the box office, domestically. Currently, she is gearing up to make her webseries debut with Netflix India's first original series.

Mumbai: Refuting rumours that Kareena Kapoor Khan was the first choice for the female lead in Mental Hai Kya, makers of the film have issued a statement reiterating that Kangana was the “first and only choice” for the film that features Rajkummar Rao opposite the Queen star. Days after Mental Hai Kya posters of Kangana and Rajkummar were revealed, rumours were abuzz that the original choice for Kangana’s role in the movie was Kareena. A report quoted a source as saying, “In 2013, Ekta had pitched the idea to Bebo. She wanted to get Kareena and Emraan Hashmi on board for the film, which was previously titled Badtameez Dil. But it never materialised.” “Bebo felt that the storyline was way ahead of its time. It was dark and explosive in many ways. It also had several

bold scenes and nudity. Kareena politely refused the film and it was put on the back burner,” the source further claimed. The makers, however, have rubbished these rumours and released a statement. A Balaji spokesperson said, “Mental Hai Kya is a completely different script, which was written only last year. Balaji heard the script just six

months back, and green lit the project. Kangana Ranaut was always the first and only choice for the film, and we are happy that she said yes to it soon after hearing the first narration. Kangana and Rajkummar Rao have been our first choices for the role. The looks that we released last week have garnered fabulous reactions from the audiences.

Mohammed Shami, Accused By Wife Of Assault, Now To Be Investigated For Corruption By BCCI's ACSU

New Delhi: The Committee of Administrators of the BCCI has asked the anticorruption wing of the board to launch an investigation into an alleged dodgy cash transaction by Indian pacer Mohammad Shami. The bowler's wife had complained to the police earlier that Shami had gone to Dubai and even made some dodgy cash transactions. The CoA has heard an audio recording of a telephonic conversation between Shami and his wife Hasin Jahan in which there is a mention of a certain Mohammad Bhai who has allegedly sent some money to the pacer through a Pakistani lady. Hasin had earlier alleged that Shami had accepted the money on the insistence of England based Mohammad Bhai. Now the ACSU

head Neeraj Kumar will be investigating the charges and submitting a report within one week. "This has reference to the various media reports pertaining to allegations against Md. Shami. The Committee of Administrators has listened to the audio recording of a telephonic conversation which it is claimed is between Md. Shami and his wife. The said audio recording is available in public domain," Vinod Rai wrote in the letter, which is in possession of said. Jahan has alleged that Shami "took money from a Pakistani woman named Alishba on the insistence of an England-based businessman Mohammad Bhai". "The Committee of Administrators is concerned only with such portion of the said audio recording

in which the person who it is claimed is Md Shami is heard saying another person by the name of Mohammad Bhai had sent money to Md. Shami through a Pakistani lady by the name of 'Alisba'." "Please investigate the above assertions/ allegations under the BCCI AntiCorruption Code and submit a report to the Committee of Administrators with your findings as to whether there is any basis to proceed further in terms thereof." Rai wrote that the terms of investigation should cover (i) "the identity and antecedents of Mohammad Bhai and Alisba ; (ii) whether any money was in fact sent by the said Mohammad Bhai through the said Alisba to Md. Shami; and (iii) if yes, the purpose for which the said money was received by Md. Shami." The investigation

will be only about the corruption allegations, Rai asserted. "The Committee of Administrators wishes to emphasize that the investigation be limited to the above issues only and not deal with any of the other allegations against Md. Shami unless you find that the same fall within the

purview of the BCCI AntiCorruption Code," he added. Last week, Jahan on her facebook page alleged that Shami was cheating on her and that she was a victim of domestic violence. Shami, though has denied all the allegations, saying it was a conspiracy to defame him and ruin his career.

Indore: State Bank of India (SBI) has closed as many as 41.16 lakh savings accounts between April-January in the current fiscal year for not maintaining the minimum balance, reveals an RTI query. Last April, SBI had re-introduced the penal charges on non-maintenance of average monthly balance after a gap of five years. Mumbai: In what could be another cause of worry for the beleaguered real estate developer Unitech Limited, the Supreme Court on Monday said that it will auction unencumbered assets of the embattled realty major. The apex court today sought details of all unencumbered assets of Unitech. Coming as a relief for Unitech homebuyers, the Supreme Court said the auctioned assets will be used to refund money to home buyers. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also imposed a cost of Rs 25 lakh on JM Financial Asset Reconstruction Company, which had taken over some loans advanced by HDFC Bank to Unitech Limited. The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said that the asset reconstruction company had given the impression that it would pay the money for refund to home buyers and now the entire proceeding had been diverted. "We treat it as an unnecessary diversion

form the main case," the bench said while imposing the cost. The bench asked the real estate company to file the details of its unencumbered assets and made it clear that they would be auctioned to settle the deals of hassled home buyers. The details of assets have to be filed within 15 days from today. "You (Unitech) have cheated and deceived home buyers," said Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said, according to said. Gujarat HC to hear poker appeals on 3rd April after two successive adjournments

Ahmedabad: A division bench of the Gujarat High Court could not take up a clutch of Letters Patent Appeal (LPA) challenging a single judge’s order dated 4th December, 2017 that held poker to be a game of chance. Separate appeals filed by four appellants: KN Suresh (Secretary, Indian Poker Association), Aman Chabbra, Bahar Gymkhana and Dominance Games were listed for hearing today before a bench of Chief Justice R. Subhash Reddy and Vipul M. Pancholi, but the court could not take up the matter due to preoccupations with other hearings. The appeal now stands adjourned to 3rd April, 2018. This

is the second successive time that the important matter pertaining to the legality of poker under the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act, 1887 has been adjourned. On 8th February, the High Court had fixed 28th February as the date for final hearing. However, on 28th February, the bench was preoccupied with other important hearings and asked the case to be

listed today. The division bench ruling on whether the game of poker involves skill and can be played for stakes is keenly watched by stakeholders in the industry. Many believe that the decision of the High Court (which is likely to be appealed in the Supreme Court by the losing party) will have important repercussions for online poker, rummy and other skill game companies.

SC ruling on Aadhaar is a relief for some, but not for those who need it the most Why has the concern about privacy been privileged over exclusion, even when there is ample evidence that Aadhaar-based welfare delivery systems have neither improved government efficiencies in targeted welfare nor facilitated a more inclusive system?

Ahmedabad: The Supreme Court on Tuesday passed yet another interim order, extending the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar numbers to various services, including bank accounts and mobiles, till the disposal of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar. The ruling, which is almost identical to the interim order passed in December, is undoubtedly a

huge relief for many, even if only temporary. But the order continues to be vague about the implications for other financial services, like PAN, income tax, mutual funds, and insurance, for those who are yet to obtain an Aadhaar card. Clarity on this is urgently required — after all, improving government efficiency in the delivery of welfare services, the stated goal of Aadhaar — has little to do

Air India to launch New Delhi to Tel Aviv direct flight operations starting 22nd March, 2018 Air India New Delhi: will begin nonstop flight operations from New Delhi to Tel Aviv in Israel starting March 22nd onwards in an official statement released by the airline. The carrier has confirmed flying thrice a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday on Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner that has 18 business class and 238 economy seats. This announcement has come at a time when Israel Ministry of Tourism has recorded a whopping growth of 50% in January and 25% in February, 2018 of Indian arrivals to Israel vis-à-vis the same period in 2017. Hassan Madah, Director, Israel Ministry of Tourism India & Philippines says, “In light of the significant increase in incoming tourism from India over the past few years, the Ministry of Tourism has been in talks with Air India and other airlines to increase their flights and

seat capacity into Israel. Air India’s direct flight connectivity from New Delhi to Tel Aviv is great news especially with its shorter flight duration and the airline’s strong domestic network within the country. With direct flights now from both Mumbai and New Delhi by El Al and Air India respectively; this will help meet the growing demand and enable us to achieve our target of 1 lakh Indian arrivals in 2018.” The aircraft will depart from New Delhi at 4.50 pm and

arrive in Tel Aviv at 8.25 pm. On its return leg, the plane will depart from Tel Aviv at 10.15 pm and land in Delhi the next day at 9 am. With one way duration of 7 hours and 10 minutes, Air India will be the fastest nonstop flight between India and Israel taking a straight route between the two countries. In addition to Air India, Israel’s national carrier El Al currently has four weekly nonstop flights from Mumbai to Tel Aviv and will soon increase its frequency furthermore. Arkia has also expressed interest to begin operations soon and introduce direct flights between Israel and India. The Ministry of Tourism along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to facilitate similar introductions including relaxing visa requirements and express visa services through VFS to encourage Indian travelers to visit Israel.

with individual financial information. With previous rulings having been ignored by numerous government departments over the years, it is definitely too early for celebration. At the very least, the ruling will hopefully end the barrage of threatening messages from

banks and mobile phone operators, though there are already pictures floating around on social media of continuing messages from mobile operators to link Aadhaar. Unfortunately, the order provides little relief to those who need it the most. The order does

not apply to the deadline for subsidies and benefits given by the government. In effect, the March 31 deadline still holds for accessing several crucial welfare services, including the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the Mid-day Meal Scheme, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, among others, many of which are a citizen’s legal right. Failing to provide relief to the most vulnerable citizens of the country, the poor and marginalised, for whom access to these welfare services is a crucial lifeline, the order is ultimately a disappointment.

Ex-Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde to join Anna Hazare’s stir Hyderabad: In a boost to Anna Hazare’s proposed fast to press his demand on the Lokpal issue, retired Supreme Court judge and former Karnataka Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde on Wednesday said he would join the social activist’s stir. The former Solicitor General of India, who was a key part of the Hazare-led anti-corruption movement in 2011, said he was planning to be with the octogenarian in New Delhi on March 23 and extend support to the fast. Hegde said Hazare had recently invited him during his visit to Bengaluru. “He (Hazare) told me I should join him. Thereafter, he sent a word with someone else. I have agreed (to join him),” he told said, adding, “As long as it (the agitation) is apolitical, I will be with him.” Hegde said Hazare had indicated that his movement would remain apolitical. Hazare

had repeatedly said in the recent times that he would undertake a fast from March 23 in Delhi, if his demand for passing “proper” bills for the Lokpal, Lokayukta and electoral reforms was not met. Hegde said he would participate more actively in the Hazare-led movement, “depending on the issues he raises”. The former judge said he had “no doubt” that the NDA government was not proactively taking action on the issue of appointment of Lokpal. Hegde had recently expressed indignation over the delay in the appointment

of Lokpal, even four years after the enactment of the law for setting up the anticorruption institution. “The party in power (BJP) does not want the anti-corruption ombudsman as it is afraid that if the truth comes out from the Lokpal’s office, it will be in trouble. The present prime minister, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, did not appoint a Lokayukta there. Ultimately, the High Court of Gujarat directed for the appointment. The attitude seems to be the same here (at the Centre),” Hegde had said.
