Guv asks Yeddy to swear in today, Cong rushes to Chief Justice at midnight New Delhi/Bengaluru: Governor Vajubhai Vala on Wednesday evening invited BJP legislature party leader BS Yeddyurappa to form the government in Karnataka, capping a day of intense jockeying for power and allegations by the Congress of bribery and horsetrading against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Upset with Vala's decision, the Congress approached Chief Justice of India

West Bengal panchayat elections: 68% voter turnout in repolls, voting more or less peaceful New Delhi : Two days after West Bengal witnessed violence and death of 14 people during the panchayat polls, re-polling at 572 booths in 19 districts was held amid tight security on Wednesday. The repolling recorded a voter turnout of 68 per cent and was conducted almost peacefully, a State Election Commission official told PTI. The West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) had ordered re-polling on Tuesday following demands by Opposition parties and a post-poll scrutiny of reports

Rao said Yeddyurappa would take oath in Bengaluru at 9am on Thursday. Yeddyurappa and HD Kumaraswamy, the leader of the newly formed JD(S)-Congress alliance, had earlier met Vala and staked claim to form the government. With 104 MLAs in the 224-member Assembly, the BJP is the single largest party, while the JD(S)Congress coalition, formed after the election results were declared, has

Dipak Misra for an urgent hearing on the matter late on Wednesday night. The Congress said the Governor had denigrated his office and acted as a BJP puppet. Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot said it was a "murder of democracy". Vala also asked 75-year-old Yeddyurappa to seek a vote of confidence within 15 days of assuming office as the chief minister. Briefing reporters, BJP general secretary Muralidhar

of political violence that marred the polling across the state. “Around 68 per cent polling was recorded. There are people still standing in the queue. The repoll has been more or less peaceful,” PTI quoted the SEC official as saying. “Initially, we had earmarked 568 booths but later on increased it to 572 booths,” the official further said. The counting of votes will take place on May 17. Meanwhile, police said that they found the body of a booth presiding officer, who was reported missing on May 14, beside the railway

tracks in North Dinajpur district. The police found the body of Raj Kumar Ray, 33, from Sonadangi area beside the railway tracks Tuesday night. The cause of the demise is yet to be ascertained. The SEC feels that the death may not have been caused due to the poll violence. Polling officials, demanding a thorough investigation into the death, blocked the Raiganj-Kaliaganj Road for at least two hours on Wednesday. There were also reports of a voter’s death from Malda district.

Ramzan ceasefire

Mufti welcomes Centre’s decision, Omar warns militants on being exposed as ‘people’s enemies’

New Delhi : With the Centre accepting her recommendation for a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramzan, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said the Islamic holy month was a harbinger of peace and the decison would help in normalcy returning to the violence-hit state. Former chief minister Omar Abdullah, while welcoming the Centre’s decision, warned that if militants didn’t respond to the government’s olive branch, they would be exposed as “enemies of the people”. “I wholeheartedly welcome the Ramadan ceasefire & would like to thank @narendramodi ji & @rajnathsingh ji for their personal intervention. My gratitude also to the leaders & parties who participated in the All Party Meeting & helped build consensus towards this announcement,” Mehbooba said after the Home Ministry

issued a statement asking security forces to halt counterterror operations on account of Ramzan and the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Mufti, who has always advocated dialogue as a means to restore normalcy in the state, further said, “Ramzan is a harbinger of peace and such a decision will go a long way in creating a peaceful and amicable environment for a sustained dialogue.” However, the Home Ministry said security forces would reserve the right to retaliate if attacked or if it was essential to protect the lives of innocent people. “Government expects everyone to cooperate in this initiative and help the Muslim brothers and sisters to observe Ramzan peacefully and without any difficulties. It is important to isolate the forces that bring a bad name to Islam by resorting to mindless violence and terror,” it said.

Culpable homicide charge: Sidhus celebrate, Rahul Gandhi first to congratulate

Chandigarh : Relief, celebrations and congratulatory messages marked the day for Punjab Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu after he was acquitted of culpable homicide charge by the Supreme Court in a 1988 road rage case. CM Amarinder Singh, who tweeted a congratulatory message for him, also called him up personally. Among others who visited him today was PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar and Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa. Sidhu later called on the CM at the latter’s

residence before leaving for Delhi to meet Rahul tomorrow. “I am going to meet Bhai,” he said referring to Rahul. “I am feeling relieved. More so, I am feeling humbled. It is unimaginable that there are people who you have never met and they are praying for you They are praying for me in a Pakistan gurdwara and organised an Akhand Path. That’s very touching. I am thankful to all those who prayed for me. I am actually thankful to those who wanted me to survive this battle,” he said. Sidhu said he woke up at 3 am Tuesday as usual, prayed and played with his three dogs, who are like children to him. Was he nervous? “Not at all. You will never see me cribbing. You will never ever see me becoming a bechara in life. I am strong enough to carry my burdens on my shoulders. I am fighting for bigger issues. I am fighting against corruption. I am fighting for the resurrection of Punjab.”

Odds are heavily in favour of BJP

T he post-results muddle in Karnataka has every possible ingredient of the high drama that is normally associated with a hung House: claims and counter-claims, newly elected legislators mysteriously disappearing before they reach their stated destinations, herding of MLAs into resorts and locking them up, parading before the Governor, phone-tapping and, to cap it all, the ultimate horse-trading, the price quoted being an unprecedented Rs100 crore and a ministerial position each. Adding further confusion was the cacophony of expert opinion on the constitutionality and morality of various actions of the dramatis personae, including the Governor. Both contending parties are citing stated positions of each other from the past to nix various claims. The convention used to be straightforward until the BJP's own conduct in Goa and Manipur created new precedents. But the argument that the Congress had used to denounce the Goa, Manipur models that the first right to be invited rests with the largest single party is turning out to be a double-edged sword that now cuts and hurts the party. In Goa, the BJP actually created an opportunity from the failure of the Congress to stake claim in time. Irrespective of all these arguments, the fact is that it is left purely to the discretion of the Governor to decide whom to invite first and that right is not open to questioning. And, after much deliberations, the Governor has given the first opportunity to Yeddyurappa as the leader of the largest single party. He will be sworn in at 9.30 am on Thursday. Incidentally, Yeddyurappa had announced even before the counting of votes that he would be sworn in as chief minister on this day. Once sworn in, with all the resources at its command, nobody doubts the BJP's ability to clobber a majority for Yeddyurappa. Already, there is a great deal of ambiguity over whether the Congress-JD(S) combine has actually managed to keep its flock together. As expected, the Opposition has accused the Governor of acting like an agent of the Centre as the Congress had submitted a petition claiming the support of 117 MLAs and has even threatened to approach the Supreme Court. It is fine by way of political posturing, but that is not going to change anything as the Governor has taken the decision after due consideration of all angles of his decision. With the Modi-Shah dispensation known for its aggressiveness, it is rather naive for the Opposition parties to have imagined that the BJP would let go of this great opportunity when the party has emerged as the largest single party and has a legitimate claim to forming the government. It has turned more adverse situations to its advantage.

Bollywood - Hollywood Intruder charged with stalking Rihanna

Halsey denies any wardrobe malfunction

Singer Halsey fired back at the reports posting photos of her supposed wardrobe malfunction. There were photos floating around from Halsey’s look at the 2018 amfAR Gala which suggested that the 23-year-old star suffered from a wardrobe malfunction, reports JustJared. com. Hasley took to Twitter to clear the rumours and posted, “I had on an entire pair of high cut black underwear under the dress. you can’t slap a censor bar over black fabric and make everyone think my pu**y is out. Tabloid culture never fails to surprise me (sic).”

Paani: Director thought it'd be tough to convince Priyanka, but here's why she agreed

A man was charged Monday with stalking and other felonies after authorities say he broke into singer Rihanna’s Hollywood Hills home and spent about 12 hours inside. According to reports on TMZ.com, 26-year-old man Eduardo Leon was arrested last week

after Rihanna’s assistant found him inside her L.A. house. He told police he wanted to have sex with the singer, not rape her. Leon allegedly broke into another home a week earlier, thinking it was the singer’s. He was also booked for residential burglary and trespassing.

Salman Khan is happy his 100 crore plus films like Tubelight are considered disasters

Salman Khan along with his team consisting of Jacqueline Fernandez, Daisy Shah, Bobby Deol, Saqib Saleem, Anil Kapoor, Freddy Daruwala, Remo D’Souza and Ramesh Taurani unveiled the trailer of ‘Race 3’ on Tuesday. The superstar revealed that he, Remo, Jacqueline and Daisy were supposed to work on another film together (most probably ‘Dancing Dad’), which was a film on father-daughter relationship. News reports suggested that Salman did not want to do a similar story after the failure of ‘Tubelight’. When asked about the same at the launch, Bhaijaan said, “Yeah, ‘Tubelight’ did very badly, but it still did much better than rest of the films, which I am really happy about. Even though we returned a lot of money (referring to the return of payment to the distributors), we had a lot of money to make ‘Race 3’.” “So, if you consider that a disaster then I am really honoured and privileged to be in that position that my 100 crore plus films are considered disasters. Thank you so much madam,” added the actor. Blaming it on working with kids frequently, Salman added, “So, first I worked with Munni, then with Matin and this was with another kid.

Priyanka Chopra who wants to showcase intense and interesting content on screen isn’t shying away from investing her money in such projects. The actress will now be backing a Marathi film based on social issues titled Paani. And the first time director Adinath Kothare can’t stop gushing about Priyanka. “I have been working on this script for the past three years. It’s a real and hard-hitting film. Priyanka is backing the project and has given her inputs on the script level. It’s a great collaboration,” says Adinath. Inspired by a true story of a common man and his village Nagdarwadi, situated in the drought-prone Marathwada region of Maharashtra the film is a beautifully woven tale of human struggle and true love. It aims to drive home a key message that is critical to the world we live in today.

attending the red carpet for the screening of Hollywood movie 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'. As Sonam walked along, the long train of her dress - hued in beige and yellow - followed around gracefully. This was Sonam's second red carpet appearance at Cannes this year. On Monday, the actress sashayed down the aisle in an embellished lehenga, hand-picked from the studious of Ralph and Russo. This is Sonam's first international visit after she married Anand Ahuja on May 8. Her wedding was followed by a big fat reception, which was attended by most of the Bollywood celebrities.

Why Mallika Sherawat was 'locked up' in a cage at Cannes this year Actress Radhika Apte is a big name in the industry today, thanks to her varied choice of films. And with fame comes attention to which the PadMan actress is not used to, nor is fond of the selfie culture. “You get lots of free stuff being a star and you also get pampered. I have started getting a lot of free things that I am not used to. But it also has a downside to it. I don’t like giving selfies. That’s not me being rude but giving selfies is not part of my job,” said Radhika. The actress goes on to mention that her fans get offended when she refuses to get clicked. “They (fans) get very offended but it’s my choice to say yes or no for a selfie. What if I do not like to give selfies?” asked the 32-year-old actress. She further added, “I don’t understand why I need to go through that. It’s a very subjective choice and not my responsibility.” Meanwhile, the actress will be next seen in Baazaar and Sacred Games.

We have seen several celebrities raising their voice for causes or being goodwill ambassadors to bring the spotlight on such efforts. Actor, filmmaker and philanthropist Kamal Haasan called upon everyone to join the fight against female foeticide when Heritage India Foundation was launching a nation-wide campaign called #Fight4theFoetus. Trisha works towards the cause of animal welfare, especially for dogs. Suriya pitches for the cause of education. Vishal sat on a hunger strike to raise his voice against the culling of stray dogs in Kerala at an event organised by the People For Cattle India. Karthi champions the cause for transgenders and more recently

Varalaxmi called for women empowerment. But what actress Mallika Sherawat did at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival was something unique and it drew a bit of global attention. The actress, who is a regular on the Cannes Red Carpet, is a cause ambassador for international NGO ‘Free A Girl India’, that fights against human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of children. At the ongoing 71st Cannes Film Festival 2018, she took it upon herself to raise awareness on the alarming crime of forced child prostitution. As part of ‘Free a Girl’s Lock-MeUp Campaign’, the Dasavatharam actress locked herself in a 12x8

feet cage at Cannes to bring global attention to the issue. Speaking about her initiative, she said, “It is my ninth year at Cannes and the festival is one of the most cogent platforms to raise the issue of child prostitution not just in India but across the world. Being locked in a cage, I wanted to drive home the imagery of how young girls who are being trafficked are trapped in a small 12x8 feet room. These innocent victims have to live and survive without any aid. There is a woman suffering abuse every minute with no hope of any change. So I thought of doing my bit and raising awareness about an issue which needs to become extinct at the earliest.”

West Indies vs Bangladesh T20Is to be played in Florida

Mumbai: West Indies and Bangladesh will play two Twenty20 matches in Florida in August, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced on Tuesday. The scheduling continues CWI’s efforts to make inroads into the largely untapped North American market, following on the heels of two matches between West Indies and India at the same venue two two years ago. The August 4-5 matches will be held at the Central Broward oval in Lauderhill, south Florida. “Both matches are scheduled for the weekend and will be played under the lights,” CWI chief executive Johnny Grave said. “Our intention is to work with

ICC Americas members, USA Cricket & Cricket Canada in partnership to establish cricket as a popular sport from North to South America.” Though West Indies has fallen on hard times at the fiveday Test level, they remain a powerhouse in the short three-hour version of the game and are the reigning world champions. The Bangladesh tour of the Caribbean will include two Tests in July, followed by three one-day internationals and three Twenty20s. Sri Lanka will also tour the Caribbean, with three Tests next month — one each in Trinidad, St. Lucia and Barbados.

Need a fit Sunil Chhetri at the Asian Cup, says Bhaichung Bhutia

Mumbai : Former captain Bhaichung Bhutia has said it will be crucial for talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri to remain fit for India to do well at the Asian Cup next year. Bhutia was drawing on his experience from the 2011 edition, where he had injured his leg. Consequently, he missed the team’s first two matches against Australia and Bahrain while came on as a second-half substitute in the final group stage match against South Korea. Without Bhutia, India cut a sorry

figure and lost all their matches. Chhetri, like Bhutia, is expected to lead the team at next year’s edition. India are paired along side hosts UAE, Bahrain and Thailand, and Bhutia felt India will need the 33-year-old at his ‘best form and fitness’. “It’s very important for us to keep Sunil fit,” Bhutia said. “I’ve gone through that experience (of getting injured). Once you cross 30, it’s nature that with the physical game players tend to get injured when you play at that high intensity.

But you need Sunil in the best form and fitness at the Asian Cup.” India failed to qualify for the 2015 Asian Cup but qualified for next an expanded edition, which will be played next January, by topping their group in the third qualification round. Chhetri, the country’s highest-ever scorer with 56 goals, was instrumental in the team’s success, having scored four times in the six matches – including winners against Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan. Without him in the squad, though, India have struggled.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Kolkata Knight Riders etched a comprehensive win over Rajasthan Royals by 6 wickets to move to the third spot in the points table.

Kuldeep Yadav is a hardworking bowler, says Dinesh Karthik

Mumbai: Kolkata Knight Riders etched a comprehensive win over Rajasthan Royals by 6 wickets to move to the third spot in the points table. KKR were given a target of 143 runs in 20 overs that they chased down with one over to spare. Earlier, RR were put into bat by Dinesh Karthik and they were off to a brisk start before Kuldeep Yadav was brought into the attack. The Chinaman spinner bagged a four-for to restrict the Royals to a small total. Rajasthan captain Ajinkya Rahane admitted that other batsmen needed to take the responsibility and capitalise on the tone set by the two openers. “The intent was positive (from the team). Jos (Buttler) and Tripathi batted really well and when I went in I just wanted to carry the momentum forward. Jos was batting really well and it’s not just upto him all the time. Batsmen will have to take responsibility. We have to blame all the batsmen and we lost because we played badly. I felt our bowlers bowled really well. 170180 would have been very good. We still have a chance. We have to learn from this game and move forward. We know how the wicket will play in Jaipur, so we got to learn and move forward. We will definitely miss Jos and Stokes, but as a cricketer I really feel happy for Jos that he has been picked in the Test squad. As a player you feel really happy

Shane Warne’s presence motivated Kuldeep Yadav to register career-best figures

Bangalore : Young chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav said the presence of his idol, legendary Shane Warne in the Rajasthan Royals dug-out has motivated him to produce his career-best performance in the Indian Premier League. Till last night, Kuldeep was having a somewhat quiet time in the ongoing IPL with just nine wickets from 12 outings at an economy rate of around 8.5. But by his own admission, Kuldeep said he was determined to turn things around in front of the Australian spin legend, who is the mentor of Rajasthan Royals team. “I’m always a big fan of him (Warne). He has been my idol. I always get a different kind of motivation when I play in front of him. I wanted to put up a good show in front of him,” Kuldeep said at the post-match news

conference. Kuldeep grabbed 4/20 and earned Kolkata Knight Riders an important six-wicket victory over Rajastha Kuldeep cleaned up the top order with a wicket in each of his four overs to bowl out Rajasthan for 142 in 19 overs. It was redemption time for Kuldeep last night as he first got Rajasthan skipper Ajinkya Rahane out bowled with a loopy googly, and then dismissed dangerman Jos Buttler. In his next two overs, Kuldeep got Stuart Binny stumped with another googly before accounting for the wicket of Ben Stokes. India’s frontline spinner in limited overs formats, Kuldeep said Warne also gave him tips for the upcoming series in England. “I discussed with him after the match. I have already started my planning for the upcoming England series.

Umesh Yadav has been magnificent this season, says Parthiv Patel Bangalore : Royal Challengers Bangalore announced a return to the tournament after stringing their second victory in a row against Kings XI Punjab in Indore on Monday. With the Virat Kohli-led side needed to register a huge win to improve their Net Run Rate, RCB went on to win by 10 wickets after they bowl out KXIP for just 88. Speaking at the press conference after the match, RCB batsman Parthiv Patel showered praises on seamer Umesh Yadav who led RCB’s attack from the front and took 3 wickets in the match. Speaking to reporters, Patel said, “Umesh Yadav is bowling brilliantly. He was India’s best bowler in their last home season. And this IPL, he has been magnificent and has been rewarded with a place in the ODI

and T20I squads for England tour. It’s a welldeserved selection. He is thinking right and is executing his plans to perfection.” Umesh registered bowling figures of 23/3 in his 4 overs against KXIP and also dismissed the reputed opening pair of KL Rahul and Chris Gayle. RCB bowled out KXIP in the 16th over after which Patel and skipper Virat Kohli chased down the total in just 8.1 overs to win the match. Talking about two straight wins, Patel said that RCB are back on the track. “This tournament is all about momentum. A couple of wins and you are back on track. Say two games before, we (RCB) weren’t in a good shape but we have fought hard and I’m confident we’ll do well in the rest of our games,” he said.

Chelsea skipper Gary Cahill seeking FA Cup salvation London : It might not save manager Antonio Conte’s job but Chelsea can still salvage a disappointing season by winning Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester United, says captain Gary Cahill. A year ago Conte’s team went into the Wembley showpiece against Arsenal as Premier League champions and were one win away from completing the double in the Italian’s first season. While a 2-1 defeat by the Gunners stung it was not considered the end of the world. A similar outcome on Saturday, however, would be unpalatable for the Blues. They finished the Premier League season in fifth place, 30 points behind

champions Manchester City, and will have no Champions League football to look forward to in September. For Cahill it has been an especially trying campaign with poor form resulting in him losing his place at various stages of the season and falling down the England pecking order. But victory on Saturday would represent a silver lining. “Last season in the Cup final we didn’t switch off. We just had a relaxed atmosphere,” Cahill told reporters at Chelsea’s FA Cup final media day. “We went into it thinking with our momentum we could just deliver like we did for the rest of the season. “This is a different kind of feeling.

This is like we are going into it to save the season. We’ve fallen short in other competitions but we haven’t fallen short in this one yet.” The rise of the Champions League has made finishing in the Premier League’s top four spots imperative for England’s biggest clubs, both because of the income it generates and the showcase it provides to attract top signings. Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said this month that finishing in the top four meant more than winning a trophy. Cahill begs to differ. “You can’t tell me the FA Cup isn’t ranked high. You are talking to the wrong fella,” he said. “Maybe if you talk to some of the

Wellington : Leg spin allrounder Todd Astle has been included on New Zealand Cricket’s list of contracted players for the first time, at the age of 31. Astle is the only newcomer on the list, which was announced Wednesday and has been reduced for the next year from 21 to 20 players. Batsman Neil Broom and allrounder James Neesham have been cut from the previous list. The contracted players are chosen on the basis of ratings by coach Mike Hesson and selector Gavin Larsen across all three formats, with Tests carrying

twice the weighting of limited-overs matches. Astle made a strong claim for inclusion with his contribution to New Zealand’s win over England in a day-night Test in March. “Todd’s progress over the past 12 months has been exciting to see”’ Larsen said. “When fit, he made the most of his opportunities in both Test and ODI cricket. “We have a big summer ahead; we know Todd performs well in New Zealand conditions and we also have a spin-friendly tour against Pakistan coming up. other boys…The FA Cup ranks as high as you like. It’s right under winning the league for me. “I’ve grown up around it. It’s an opportunity to win the final. It’s like if you are in the top four and qualify for the Champions League for seven or eight years, but don’t win any trophies. Would you swap that for what we’ve done? “I wouldn’t, but that’s me personally.” With Conte widelyexpected to move on in the close-season there has been an air of uncertainty around the club in recent months. If Saturday’s clash is to be his last game Cahill wants to make sure Conte’s reign ends on a high.

Karnataka results: House hung, over to Governor Vajubhai Vala

New Delhi : The situation in Karnataka pits the claim of the single largest minority against a postpoll combination equipped with a clear majority. Governor Vajubhai Vala has the discretion to invite any leader to form the government. But he must make a choice keeping in mind the leader’s ability to prove his majority on the floor of the House, and to provide a stable government. As the Governor makes his choice, here is some relevant background. The central government set up the Justice R S Sarkaria Commission in June 1983 to examine the relationship and balance of power between state and central governments. The Commission, which dealt with the role of Governors, suggested that in choosing a Chief Minister, the Governor should be guided by the following principles: *The party or combination of parties that command the widest support in the

Legislative Assembly should be called to form the government. * The Governor’s task is to see that a government is formed — and not to try to form a government that will pursue policies that he approves. * If no party has a majority, the Governor has to invite: a) a pre-poll alliance, b) the largest single party that is able to gain majority support, c) a post-election coalition that has the required members, d) a post-election coalition in which partners are willing to extend outside support. The Commission recommended that the Chief Minister must seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly within 30 days of taking over. It also said the Governor should not risk determining the issue of majority support outside the Assembly, and that the prudent course would be to have the claims tested on the floor of the House.

in Allahabad on a grand scale around the end of the second week of January, 2019. When asked about the reasons for delaying the

Bharatiya Divas is being organised in Varanasi between January 21-23, 2019, which PM Modi is expected to attend. The 2017 edition of the Vibrant

Jakarta : Indonesian police shot dead four men on Wednesday after they used samurai swords to attack officers at Riau police headquarters in Pekanbaru, Sumatra, a police spokesman said. The men had driven their car into the police yard before getting out to stage the attack, Setyo Wasisto, national police spokesman, told a briefing. Two officers were wounded in the attack, while another was killed after one of the perpetrators tried to escape and crashed into the officer, he said. “The one who

escaped has been captured and secured at Pekanbaru police station,” Wasisto said. The spokesman said that a journalist who had been at the police station was also hurt after being hit by the car. Earlier, an internal police report said that one of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body. Wasisto did not comment on this. TV footage showed one man lying on the ground with a long sword next to his body and an armoured car stationed outside the police station.

Bangladesh SC grants bail to ex-PM Khaleda Zia in graft case: Media

Dhaka : Bangladesh’s former prime minister Khaleda Zia was today granted bail by the country’s Supreme Court in a graft case, according to a media report. The Bangladesh’s apex court has upheld the High Court’s March bail order for the 72-year-old Zia, also the chief of the main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), bbdnews24 reported. The High Court will now resolve by July 31 Zia’s appeal that sought to overturn her conviction and a five-year jail term in the Zia Orphanage

Trust case, it said. The BNP chief was jailed for five years on February 8 over the embezzlement of 21 million taka (about USD 250,000) in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust, named after her husband late Ziaur Rahman, a military ruler-turned-politician. The High Court had on March 12 granted an interim bail to Zia. Later, the Anti-Corruption Commission and the government challenged the High Court order, taking their appeals to the Appellate Division.

Jailed Malaysian leader Anwar Ibrahim walks free after royal pardon Kuala Lumpur : Jailed Malaysian reformist Anwar Ibrahim was granted a full pardon on Wednesday and walked out of a hospital in Kuala Lumpur just a week after his alliance scored a shock victory in a general election. Smiling and waving to supporters, Anwar, dressed in a black suit and tie and his hair neatly swept back, was surrounded by his family, lawyers and prison guards before driving to the palace for an audience with King Sultan Muhammad V. He was greeted at the palace by new Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, his ally-turned-foe-turned-ally, with whom he joined forces to oust scandal-tainted Najib

Razak’s administration in last week’s election. “The king, with the advice of the pardons board of the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, has allowed a full pardon and given an immediate release for … Anwar bin Ibrahim,” said a statement issued by the palace. Anwar, 70, serving a five year-sentence for sodomy, has been recovering from a shoulder injury in hospital under police guard. The pardon allows Anwar to re-enter active politics immediately, but it was not clear what his role in government would be. Mahathir, 92, had vowed to enable Anwar’s release and eventually step aside for him to become the

prime minister. On Tuesday, Mahathir said he expected to be prime minister for one or two more years, setting off talk of differences between the two. “Seeing him walk free makes me emotional, but the fight is not over,” said Ridzuan Ismail, an Anwar supporter at the hospital. “Now we need to see him become prime minister.” Jack Seng, another supporter wearing a shirt with a logo of Anwar behind bars, said he thought Mahathir and Anwar would resolve any tensions between them. “I think we need to let Mahathir do his work to save Malaysia and to get back its system of government.”

Washington : President Donald Trump appeared to be in a good mood Tuesday when he met privately with Senate Republicans, buoyed by primary election results and talks with North Korea, and bypassing any serious discussion of highprofile trouble spots in the administration. Senators did not ask about a White House aide’s crass remark of ailing GOP Sen. John McCain. They did not bring up special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian election interference. Instead, Trump joked and dropped one-liners during lunch, poking fun at senators of both parties in a wide-

ranging 45-minute talk about the GOP tax cuts, the Iran nuclear deal and his upbeat assessment of the midterm election. He told them he so enjoyed West Virginia, where Republicans escaped an embarrassing primary setback last week, that he might move there after his time in the White House. He took a couple of questions. But the Senate’s top Republican, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, told reporters afterward that the White House official who disparaged McCain “should apologize and should apologize publicly.” Trump’s Capitol Hill lunch Tuesday

with Senate Republicans comes as the White House and its GOP allies are trying to coalesce around a political message ahead of the midterm elections. But much like when Trump was headed to the GOP Senate lunch to talk policy in October 2017, the White House agenda was eclipsed by another story. During a closed-door meeting last week, White House communications aide Kelly Sadler dismissed McCain’s opposition to CIA nominee Gina Haspel by saying of the Arizona Republican: “He’s dying anyway.” The 81-yearold McCain was diagnosed in July with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
