Congress leads 7 Opposition parties in bid to impeach CJI Dipak Misra New Delhi : Seven opposition parties, led by the Congress, launched an unprecedented move to impeach the Chief Justice of India accusing him of corruption, misusing his authority and failing to protect the independence of the judiciary. Party leaders met Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, who is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, and handed over the notice of impeachment bearing signatures of 64 MPs and seven former MPs, who recently retired. This comes a day after a Supreme Court bench headed by CJI Misra rejected a bunch of petitions seeking an independent investigation into the death of Judge B H Loya, who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case.“We wish this day had never come,” said senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal, adding that the step has been

taken “with a heavy heart” to protect the independence of the judiciary. In their notice, the parties listed out five “charges of misbehaviour” against the CJI and argued that, as MPs, they are “entitled to hold the Chief Justice accountable” and that “the majesty of the law is more important than the majesty of any office.” The five acts of alleged misbehaviour include charges related “to the conspiracy to pay illegal gratification by persons in relation to the Prasad Education Trust case and the manner in which the case was dealt with by the Chief Justice”. They also charged him with “abuse of exercise of power” in choosing to send “sensitive matters to particular benches by misusing his authority as Master of the Roster with the likely intent to influence the outcome.”

NIA chargesheets Hizbul chief Syed Salahuddin’s son for raising funds for terror acts

New Delhi : The NIA on Friday charged Syed Shahid Yusuf, son of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, with indulging in unlawful activities and raising funds for terror operations in a 2011 case. The agency made the allegations in a charge sheet filed before District Judge Poonam A Bamba, who posted it for consideration on May 4. The final report has alleged that Yusuf had hatched a conspiracy to received funds from Pakistan through hawala channels to

spread terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The NIA has accused him of committing various offences punishable under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. 42-year-old Yousuf was posted as agricultural assistant in Budgam town of central Kashmir when he was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on October 24 last year. Mamata Banerjee urges people to exercise caution on fake news Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today asked the people to exercise caution on news items being circulated on the social media as in many cases they are fake. Speaking at a gathering of cable TV operators here, Banerjee asked them to stay vigilant and urged them not to beam news items involving communal violence that can fuel trouble and unrest elsewhere. She requested the operators to felicitate government messages to be broadcast via cable TV to control such situations. “Fake news is circulating in a big way. Fake news incite people leading to unrest. People should be aware of these and stay cautious,” Banerjee said. Quality should be maintained in serials where negativity is rampant causing social degradation, she said. On Tuesday’s nor’wester that left 18 dead and scores injured, Banerjee said, “We don’t have any control on natural calamities. But at least, we should not create man-made disasters.

February 28, 2002, it became the site of one of the worst massacres of the Gujarat riots — 97 Muslims were killed by mobs. Kodnani was accused of reaching the spot where a large mob had assembled, and of inflaming the situation. Eleven eyewitnesses claimed to have seen her getting off her car, surrounded by the mob. She allegedly addressed them and incited them to kill Muslims.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi had targeted BJP chief Amit Shah, saying "the truth has its own way of catching up with people like him" as Shah was among those discharged in the Sohrabuddin case.

Judge Loya won’t be forgotten, there is hope as millions can see truth: Rahul

New Delhi : Congress President Rahul Gandhi today said India will not allow judge B H Loya to be forgotten and millions of Indians can see the truth. His remarks came as the Congress and six other opposition parties moved a notice for impeachment of the Chief Justice of India, a day after the apex court rejected pleas for a probe into the death of Loya, who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh alleged fake encounter case. “‘There is no hope left, everything is managed’ say Judge Loya’s family. I want to tell them, there is hope. There is hope because millions of Indians

can see the truth. “India will not allow Judge Loya to be forgotten,” he said on Twitter. Gandhi tagged a news report that quoted the judge’s family members as saying that “there is no hope left, everything seems managed”. Disagreeing with the Supreme Court verdict, the Congress had yesterday demanded a fair inquiry to address the “unanswered questions” regarding Loya’s death. Congress President Rahul Gandhi had targeted BJP chief Amit Shah, saying “the truth has its own way of catching up with people like him”.

Congress, allies should seek apology from Amit Shah for tarnishing his image: Bihar BJP chief

Patna : Bihar BJP president Nityanand Rai on Friday asked Congress and its allies to tender an apology from party president Amit Shah for tarnishing his and his party’s image in Judge B J Loya death case. Rai, who was accompanied by Bihar BJP vice president Devesh Kumar, said that Congress party did not stop raising accusing fingers despite the late Judge’s family stating that he died of heart attack. Referring to the Supreme Court’s judgement in Judge B H Loya’s death case yesterday, Rai said that the PIL filed for probe into

Loya death was a politically motivated one and part of conspiracy against BJP chief for maligning his image. “Congress and its allies hatched a conspiracy to malign the image of our party president Amit Shah. With the apex court judgement in Judge Loya death case, it has been clearly established that Congress has been indulging in dirty and cheap politics and also conpired to tarnish his (Shah) image… Congress and its allies should tender apology from our party president,” Rai told reporters here. Notably,

the judge B H Loya was hearing Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter cass- in which BJP chief Amit Shah was among the accusedwhen he died of a heart attack in 2014. The BJP chief was later discharged by the judge who replaced Loya. “Congress hatched a conspiracy by putting the judicial system of the country in the dock for which it will have to pay a heavy price when it will be ousted from power in the remaining few states,” said Rai, a Lok Sabha member from Ujiyarpur constituency in Bihar.

Kodnani acquittal: A farce of a trial

F ormer BJP minister Maya Kodnani has been discharged by Gujarat High Court in the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case. For Kodnani, who has been on bail due to ill health, it is a great day as she walks free from her 28-year jail sentence. But, for the families of the nearly 100 victims of the carnage, it may not be justice delivered, but rather its miscarriage. Special judge Jyotsna Yagnik clarified that Maya Kodnani was not being acquitted but given the 'benefit of doubt'. The court ruled that criminal conspiracy could not be established as the 11 witnesses who testified against her were "unreliable". The high court, thus, overruled the conclusion by a designated special court in 2012 that Kodnani was one of the "principal conspirators" and the kingpin of the entire communal riots, who instigated the rioters. The court, however, upheld the conviction of alleged co-conspirator Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi and 11 other people, who have been awarded a uniform jail term of 21 years. The verdict came after over 8 months of hearing, where the prosecution did a half-hearted job throughout. This was, probably, the first case probed by the SIT in which the agency did not demand death penalty for the convicts, nor even enhancement of their punishment on the ground that it did not receive sanction from the state government. The court even pulled up the Gujarat government, saying it merely paid lip service to enhance punishment for the guilt as it neither opposed the bail applications of convicts, nor underscore that they were convicts in a heinous crime while hearing their bail applications. Courts are not interested in punishing anyone or letting anyone off. They only sit in judgment of the arguments put forth by the two sides. If the prosecution fails to establish whatever it is charging the accused with, the courts will not go out of their way to prove the guilt of the accused. This is what really happened in this case, relating to riots in Naroda Patiya, a suburb of Ahmedabad, where 97 Muslims were killed during three days of violence that followed the Godhra train burning, in which 59 Hindu volunteers were killed. Witnesses earlier testified that Kodnani had incited the mob and that she had handed out swords to rioters, exhorting them to attack Muslims. The high-pressure nature of the case was evident from the fact that as many as six judges recused themselves from hearing the appeals. Another judge decided to take up Kodnani's appeal separately for hearing after delinking it from other appeals, but the Supreme Court stayed the proceedings before they were taken up by a three-member Bench which heard the arguments for eight months.

Since this is Sara Ali Khan's debut film, Amrita was clear that she shouldn't be overshadowed by Ranveer." The source adds, "The movie has a message about women's safety, with an emphasis on Sara's character. While the leading lady in the Telugu original served only as the love interest, her character will be more involved in the story."

Priyanka Chopra congratulates Deepika Padukone for becoming TIME's most influential

Just the other day, Mahira Khan told the BBC that Bollywood was never her priority. Now, in the trailer of her new Pakistani film 7 Din Mohabbat In, Mahira is actually heard mouthing the line, “Love mein no thank you, no sorry” from Salman Khan’s Maine Pyar Kiya.

This, just a few days after a video surfaced showing her lip-syncing to Lata Mangeshkar’s Jahan Bhi Jaati Hoon from the Raj KapoorNargis starrer Chori Chori. Quite clearly, Mahira is far from done with Bollywood. Also, the buzz is that the unofficial embargo on

Pakistani artistes working in Bollywood is likely to be lifted, and that could mean good news for Mahira, who has starred in Raees alongside Shah Rukh Khan. A source from the ruling party says, “There was never a ban as such. It’s entirely up to Bollywood

whether it wants to work with Pakistani artistes or not.” Meanwhile, Mahira’s friend Ranbir Kapoor’s father, Rishi Kapoor, has expressed a desire to visit Peshawar, the Pakistani town that the Kapoors originally hail from. Now, who better to show him around town than Mahira herself?

If you’re wondering how Bollywood has finally been getting its ‘look’ right, you have Hollywood to thank for it. All big production houses are now taking their time to get the lead characters’ look right first instead of jumping to cast actors. Following Sridevi’s demise, Madhuri Dixt replaced the late actress in the film Kalank (earlier titled Shuddhi). But, it’s not as if she stepped straight into Sridevi’s shoes. Madhuri, too, had to undergo a look test first. She had tweeted at the time “Arrived at the sets of #Kalank with @ karanjohar for the look test...

Actor-singer Ali Zafar on Thursday denied sexual harassment allegation leveled against him by Pakistani singer Meesha Shafi. Zafar, who has worked in several Bollywood films, took to Twitter and said he will take this matter through the courts of law and he would not like to "contest vendetta on social media". "I categorically deny

all and any claims of harassment lodged against me by Ms Shafi. I intend to take this through the courts of law and to address this professionally and seriously rather than to lodge any allegations here, contesting personal vendettas on social media and in turn disrespecting the movement, my family, the industry and my fans," he wrote.

Is Mira Rajput pregnant? Amidst reports of the stork visiting Shahid Kapoor and Mira, the lady was spotted recently, wearing comfy and loose paperbag trousers, ditching the fitted pants and pencil skirts, she’s usually seen in... Just a few days ago there were reports floating on the Internet that Shahid and Mira are all set to become parents once again. But there was no confirmation from the Kapoors on the same. On Wednesday

night, Mira was spotted in Mumbai having dinner with a close friend. One could blame the speculation on the pants, that seemed bunched up at the waist making netizens believe that Mira looked pregnant in the pictures. Perhaps, it’s just the way the pants fit. While Shahid and Mira’s fans are eagerly awaiting a response and official word from the couple, they are yet to speak about it.

Successive wins for Chelsea, draw not enough for Southampton

Manny Pacquiao, who returns to action for the first time since losing on points to Australian Jeff Horn, said he expected the bout at the Axiata Arena to be "a real boxing fight".

Victor Moses set up the first goal and scored the second himself as Chelsea won 2-1 at Burnley. In the night's other match, Southampton was unable to ease its relegation worries after a 0-0 draw at Leicester.

New Delhi : Victor Moses has not touched the heights he did in Chelsea’s Premier League-winning campaign last season but he was back to his best on Thursday. The Nigerian international set up the first goal and scored the second himself as Chelsea won 2-1 at Burnley to move within five points of London rival Tottenham, which occupies the fourth and final Champions League qualification place with four matches left. In the night’s other match, Southampton was unable to ease its relegation worries after a 0-0 draw at Leicester. Chelsea, which meets Southampton in Sunday’s FA Cup semifinal at Wembley eight days after beating the same opponent 3-2 in the league, took control early on at Burnley and it came as no surprise when Antonio Conte’s men went in front after 20 minutes. Moses, who performed so well last season after being converted from

a winger to a fast-raiding wing-back, was sent galloping clear down the right and when goalkeeper Nick Pope failed to get a hand on his cross, defender Kevin Long turned the ball into his own net from close range. Chelsea fielded two centre-forwards _ Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud _ in tandem for the first time in seven years and the duo linked well. Morata should have made it 2-0 in the second half when he sprinted clear of the Burnley defence but the Spain striker missed the target with only Pope to beat and was soon replaced by substitute Eden Hazard. The home team made Chelsea pay for that mistake when Ashley Barnes deflected Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s long-range drive beyond goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the 64th minute. Moses then settled Chelsea nerves in the 69th minute when he beat the unsighted Pope at his near post with a firm rightfooted shot from 10 meters.

New Delhi : Dropping shooting from 2022 Commonwealth Games will be a huge setback for India, especially for its young shooters, said the country’s only individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra. “No doubt, it will be a huge setback for the country and our shooters. It will hit hard on the up and coming shooters,” Bindra said at the sidelines of a felicitation ceremony of India’s Olympic medallists by the visiting International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach. The

event was organised by the Indian Olympic Association at a city hotel last night “Shooting is an optional sport and they (Birmingham organisers) say they don’t have the facilities to host shooting events. Had Durban (South Africa) hosted the 2022 CWG, shooting would have been there,” he added. Durban was to originally host the 2022 CWG but it later expressed its inability to host the Games due to financial problems. The Commonwealth Games Federation later awarded the 2022 CWG to Birmingham.

Manny Pacquiao targets more bouts after Kuala Lumpur showdown New Delhi : Manny Pacquiao believes he has “a couple more fights” left in him before he retires, starting with his first contest for more than a year when he faces Argentine WBA welterweight world champion Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur this July. “Definitely this is not my last fight,” the 39-year-old Filipino said at a news conference in the Malaysian capital on Friday to promote the fight. “I want my last fight to be in the Philippines, but I still have a couple more fights till I retire,” said the former eight-division world champion and serving senator in his homeland. Pacquiao, who returns to action for the first time since losing on points to Australian Jeff Horn in Brisbane last July, said he expected the July 15 bout at the Axiata Arena to be “a real boxing fight”. “Matthysse’s style is very aggressive. He’ll want to come inside and fight toeto-toe. You won’t see running or dancing in the ring,” said Pacquiao, who has a 59-7-2 record with four of those losses coming in his last nine fights.

Revamped Davis Cup in one week is horrible idea, says Anand Amritraj

New Delhi : The proposed World Cup of tennis in one week is a “horrible idea” since it will take away the charm of home and away ties which allows countries like India to host players such as Rafael Nadal, contends former India captain Anand Amritraj. The ITF Board of Directors unanimously endorsed the proposal to create a season-ending World Cup of Tennis finals featuring 18 nations. The matches will be played over a week at a single venue in the traditional week

of Davis Cup final in November. The idea will be put to vote at ITF AGM in August in Orlando and needs two-third majority to become a reality. The revamp idea has come after the ITF struck a deal with investment group Kosmos, founded and run by Spanish international and FC Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique. It is expected to generate revenue to the tune of USD 3 billion in a 25-year period. “The World Cup of Tennis in the proposed one week format is a horrible idea.

‘Sad day for Arsenal’ as Arsene Wenger announces departure after nearly 22 years London : Arsene Wenger brought to an end a 22-year-old association with Arsenal when the club announced this will be his last season with the Gunners. With the departure, Wenger has departed a year before his contract was due to expire. The announcement has come at a time when Arsenal are sixth in the English Premier League and will miss out on a topfour finish. However, their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League now rest on the Europa League where Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid in the semifinals. Wenger, 68, during his time at the London club won three

Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, including doing a Double in 1998 and 2002. He was appointed as the boss on October 1, 1996, and is the Premier League’s current longest-serving manager, having taken charge of a record 823 games. In the statement, the Frenchman said, “After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season. I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years. I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.

Dropping shooting from 2022 CWG huge setback for India, says Abhinav The Birmingham Organising Committee has decided to exclude shooting from the 2022 Games, citing logistical issues. India won a bagful of shooting medals at the Games. The shooting squad, at the recently concluded Gold Coast Games, bagged as many as 16 medals, seven of them gold. Shooting, though an optional sport at the CWG, has been played in every edition since Kingston 1966, except once in Edinburgh in 1970. A few days back, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder

Business

Singh had called for India’s boycott of the 2022 CWG if shooting was not reinstated, but IOA president Narinder Batra yesterday termed it as going a “bit too extreme”. “Raninder is free to make his statements. There are a lot of things related to government. We will certainly pick up the issue of shooting not being there in the 2022 CWG but it does not start or end with not participating. A nation boycotting, I think he is going a bit too extreme,” said Batra at a press conference in the presence of Bach.

Banks: Only 30-40 per cent ATMs in Telangana are working

During the previous MPC meeting, only one member was in favour of a rate hike while others favoured a neutral stance.

Inflation concerns growing: RBI Mumbai: While the Reserve bank (RBI) had lowered its inflation projection for the current fiscal in its recent monetary policy review and maintained a neutral stance in its policy outlook, the minutes of the MPC meeting revealed that the voices in favour of policy tightening have increased. Though only one member of the MPC voted in favour of interest rate hike, another member argued for a beginning of “withdrawal of accommodation” in the next MPC meeting in June. During the previous MPC meeting, only one member was in favour of a rate hike while others favoured a neutral stance. According to the minutes, a

majority of members expressed concern regarding upside risk to inflation stemming from rise in global crude oil price,

minimum support price for Kharif crops, the staggered impact of revision in house rent allowance and fiscal slippages by the centre and various state governments. On the other hand, members remained confident about the recovery in domestic growth highlighting the improvement in investment

activity and capacity utilisation though a few members wanted to wait for more data to come in. Deputy governor Viral Acharya, who advocated a neutral stance in the February review, said the lack of fiscal space to go easy on fuel cesses implies that prices at the pump will likely mirror movements in international prices. Since global commodity prices as a group are refusing to budge, he said the overall outlook is not comforting from the standpoint of domestic inflation. “I feel it is important to let some more hard data come in, especially on growth, and allow some more time to let the early skirmishes on the global trade front play out.

New Delhi/Hyderabad: The finance ministry and RBI officials on Thursday said that the cash crunch witnessed in some parts of the country would improve by Friday evening. The cash crunch has eased slightly on Thursday as around 86 per cent of the ATMs were functioning across the country. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the two states which were the first to report cash shortage a few months ago, senior government officials said only 70 per cent of the ATMs were dispensing cash. A bank official, however, suggests that the number of

cash-dispensing ATMs in both Telugu states, as claimed by the officials, is exaggerated and only 30 to 40 per cent ATMs are functional on Thursday. SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar said a large number of people are not depositing the cash in the banks, which resulted in cash shortage. Bihar, which was another state hit by the cash crunch, saw around 66 per cent of its ATM working on Thursday. The RBI is transporting more cash to Bihar so as to improve the situation in the state by Friday evening, said sources. They added additional Rs 1,200 crore may be pushed to Bihar.

New Delhi : Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani on Friday said he wanted to be a voice for Dalits working in private companies, sanitation workers and landless agricultural labourers, than being a voice for reservation. “As my Ambedkarite and Marxist orientation increased, I felt the need to repeat to myself that even more than reservation, I should become the voice of Dalit labourers in this country’s private companies and factories,” the Dalit activist said at a protest meeting in Delhi University. “I became more conscious, that more than reservation, I must speak for the sanitation workers who enter sewers, and landless agricultural labourers,” he added. Mevani said when he went to Vadgam recently, he asked

two officers about the attempts to stop him from entering the state assembly. “They were instructed to destroy some documents in my nominations and find

Smart City, Amrut, Swachh Bharat moving at slow pace, says finance ministry official

Ahmedabad : Urban development schemes like Smart City Mission, Amrut Mission and Swachh Bharat are moving at a slow place in various cities of India that are facing “large infrastructure deficit” and “poor quality of urban services”, said Dr Kumar V Pratap, Joint Secretary (Infrastructure, Policy and Finance), Ministry of Finance, Government of India, while speaking at an event in Ahmedabad on Thursday. “One third of India that lives in urban areas contributes two-third of the GDP. If India needs to retain its position as the fastest growing economy in the world, then the contribution of the urban areas have to increase. Given the condition of our urban areas, status quo would mean it will become the binding constraint

of our Indian economy,” said Pratap, while addressing a two-day seminar on urban development, organised by the Union finance ministry and Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS). The official pointed out that 10-12 million people are being added every year to the urban population of India and it is expected that by the year 2030, 40 per cent of India’s population or 600 million people will be living in urban areas that contribute 75 per cent to the national GDP. “Urban India has a large infrastructure deficit and this is manifested in poor quality of urban services to the population. The challenge is to provide minimum urban services to the rapidly growing urban population in India while the present population is being underserved,” he added.

some technical faults,” he alleged. He said when such attempts were being made to stop “just one Jignesh”, there was a need to fight for sending their

representatives to Parliament and every assembly. “Today the Constitution, farmers, Dalit labourers, tribals and teachers are in such a crisis, despite varying ideologies, there is a need for us to come together,” Mevani said. Rebel JD(U) leaders Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar, Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav and student union leaders of universities across north India took part in the event organised by Delhi University Forum for Social Justice. The one-day event was organised against a UGC circular that directed all universities, colleges and other grant-in-aid institutions and centres to prepare roster system keeping the department/subject as a unit for all levels of teachers, instead of a roster taking college or university as a unit.

service examinations. In that order, which was also passed by Justice Upadhyay, he has found several anomalies in recruiting the candidates. The anomalies ranged from giving more seats to general category students than prescribed under the law to appointing candidates, ignoring their merit lists among others. The court had ordered to probe these anomalies and appoint the meritorious candidates as per the law. However, even after a year, the state government didn’t comply with the order

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani joins Donald Trump legal team

New York : Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a one-time federal prosecutor, is joining U.S. President Donald Trump’s personal legal team, Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow said in a statement on Thursday. “Rudy is great,” Sekulow quoted Trump as saying. “He has been my friend for a long time and wants to get this matter quickly resolved for the good of the country.” JoAnn Zafonte, a representative for Giuliani, did not respond to a request for comment. Giuliani was one of three attorneys Sekulow said were being added to the president’s legal team dealing with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Russia has denied meddling in the election. Trump has said there was no collusion and has called the Mueller probe a

“witch hunt.” Sekulow also announced south Florida husband-and-wife white-collar defense lawyers Martin and Jane Raskin were joining the president’s legal team. The addition of Giuliani and the Raskins represents a major boost to Trump’s legal firepower. The president has previously struggled to retain a top-flight criminal lawyer to represent him in the Mueller probe. Washington lawyer John Dowd, the most recent head of his team, resigned last month. Harry Sandick, a partner at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler and former federal prosecutor, said it was not clear how Giuliani would quickly resolve the Mueller probe, given the number of people who have pleaded guilty and have become cooperating witnesses.

US officials: 16 nations agree to track Venezuela corruption Ahmedabad : Three years after the Gujarat Education department installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at government schools across the state to keep a check on exam centres and minimise copying cases, the effectiveness of the measure has come under scanner. This year, over 150 copying cases have been reported which were detected by examiners and squads during the board exams. After verifying the CCTV footage, this number is certain to shoot up. Fearing this, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher

Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has taken upon itself to nail the unfair means cases in state board examinations. Sources in the board revealed that based on the initial findings, the board authorities are suspecting mass copying cases this year too. The CCTV cameras are installed and their recordings are verified by the District Education Officers (DEOs). However, the authorities suspect that they are subject to manipulations. So, this year, the GSHSEB is all set to verify 100 per cent CCTV footage running into nearly 3,200 compact discs (CDs)

of the examination centres which have been identified as “sensitive” and “hyper sensitive”. This means that the education board will verify the CCTV footages of all subjects throughout the length of exams. Sources revealed that over 170 Class XII Science CDs and over 3,000 CDs of Class XII general stream exams have been collected from sensitive centres. Mass copying cases are reported more in general streams than Science streams, sources said. Class XII exams are held in two three-hour shifts and are spread over 13 days.

Quashing order suggesting President Land for Dalits: Gujarat rule, Gujarat High Court bench says, activist Martin Macwan threatens to launch stir ‘Let us maintain decency’

Ahmedabad : The remark came on the order passed by single-judge bench Justice Paresh Upadhyay, who on April 10 had passed a scathing order against Advocate General Kamal Trivedi for alleged “manipulations and illegalities”. This remark was based on a petition moved by the state government seeking extension of time to implement court’s order passed in April 2017 to appoint candidates of SC/ST, economically weaker sections and women who had cleared state civil

international

nor it challenged it. The state kept seeking extension from the court which were granted. The last extension period expired on March 31 and the state moved another petition for more time. On April 10, Justice Upadhyay, while allowing one more extension till April 31, passed a stinging order holding that state’s application for time was “unreasonable and lacks bona fide, it needs to be allowed by extending the time limit, so that the government can restore the rights of the candidates belonging to the scheduled castes.

Sanand : Criticising the judiciary for its “mentality” towards cases related to the Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Dalit rights activist Martin Macwan, who runs Navsarjan, Thursday threatened to launch and agitation if their demands on land and other issues were not met. Addressing a gathering of Dalits at Nani Devti village near Sanand, he said the activists will give a memorandum to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in this regard. Macwan hit out at a particular judge of the Gujarat High Court and judiciary in general while adding that in

court verdicts on atrocity Act, personal prejudices of judges came into play than questions of law. The function was held at Dalit Shakti Kendra, run by voluntary organisation Navsarjan, led by Macwan. It was attended by around 500700 Dalits from 12 districts of Gujarat. The event saw the launch of a campaign seeking the implementation of Gujarat government’s policy of giving land to Dalits under various laws, specially Agriculture Land Ceiling Act. Former MLA Siddharth Parmar and Dalit scholar Chandu Maheriya were also present on the occasion.

Washington : Finance ministers from several Latin American nations as well as the US and Europe have agreed to work jointly to locate and seize the proceeds arising from corruption by Venezuelan government insiders, two US Treasury officials said Thursday. The decision came at a Washington meeting earlier in the day attended by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin at which the finance officials from 16 nations also discussed ways to provide swift economic and

humanitarian assistance to Venezuela, including substantial debt relief, in the event socialist President Nicolas Maduro is replaced by a government they deem more legitimate and committed to economic reform. The two officials agreed to talk about the meeting only if not quoted by name because the discussions were to be private. Officials from France, Germany, Britain, Japan and all major Latin American nations participated in the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund’s spring meetings. The IMF this week forecast Venezuela’s economy will shrink 15 percent in 2018, extending for a fifth year a recession that already surpassed in size the US Great Depression. Inflation for the year is expected to soar to almost 14,000 percent.

Bill Cosby sex assault retrial to go to jury next week: Judge

Norristown : Prosecutors wrapped up their sexual assault case against comedian Bill Cosby on Thursday as experts offered conflicting testimony about the drugs he is accused of giving a thenfriend before allegedly raping her. Judge Steven O’Neill said he anticipated Cosby’s fate would be in the hands of the jury next week. Lawyers said deliberations could begin as early as late Monday in an attempt to reach a unanimous verdict, which eluded the jury in Cosby’s first trial. It ended in a mistrial in June. Andrea

Constand, 45, contends the former star of “The Cosby Show” gave her three little blue pills he said would help her relax and then sexually assaulted her at his home outside Philadelphia in 2004. Cosby, 80, says any sexual contact with Constand was consensual. He could face 10 years in prison if convicted. The questions of what drug Cosby gave Constand and the effects it had are central to the case. Timothy Rohrig, a forensic toxicologist from Wichita, Kansas, called as the final

prosecution witness, testified about the effects of Benadryl and Quaaludes, which Cosby in a 2005 deposition said he used to seduce women. Rohrig said the pills could have left Constand feeling incapacitated. Constand testified last week that after swallowing the pills she experienced double vision, slurred her words, had dry mouth, and her legs felt “rubbery,” even paralyzed. She was an administrator for the women’s basketball team at Cosby’s alma mater, Temple University.
