two injured in IED blast in Dantewada

New Delhi : Seven police personnel were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was blown up by Naxalites with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Dantewada on Sunday morning. Two other jawans were also injured in the incident. According to officials, the blast, targetting a police escort vehicle, took place at 11 am when the jawans were on their way from Cholnar to Kirandul. The deceased include three jawans from the Chhattisgarh Armed Force and two jawans from Dantewada district police. DIG (Dantewada Range) Ratan Lal Dangi said the Naxals triggered the blast

when the police personnel were escorting a vehicle carrying road construction material. The ultras also looted the weapons of the police personnel, he said, adding that reinforcement was rushed to the spot soon after the incident. Road construction work is underway between Kirandul and Palnar villages in Dantewada. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his condolences over the death of the jawans. “The naxals targeted the jawans by planting IED rather than fighting them face to face,” he told news agancy.Condemning the Naxal attack, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh

called it “cowardly” and stated that it exposed the rebels’ ‘antipeople’ and ‘anti-development’ mindset. “Our police personnel have sacrificed their lives while guarding a road construction site. Their sacrifice will always be remembered,” Singh was quoted as saying by news agency. “This proves that Naxalites do not want villagers and tribal people of this district to have access to even basic facilities such as roads. Incidents like these cannot dampen the courage and determination of our police force and officials, employees and labourers associated with road construction,” he said.

Bengaluru: Karnataka's CM designate HD Kumaraswamy has said the post will not be shared between him and the Congress a rotational deal that had soured his tie-up with the BJP in 2007. Ahead of his swearing-in ceremony, Kumaraswamy will meet Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Monday to finalise the modalities of government formation. Clarifying that no discussion has taken place so far on the allocation of ministerial berths, Kumaraswamy termed reports on the power-sharing formula of 30 months each between

the parties as "bogus". "I'm visiting New Delhi tomorrow (on Monday)...I will meet Congress president Rahul Gandhi and the party's senior leader Sonia Gandhi," he told reporters here. Based on the outcome of discussions with them, a decision will be taken on

The BSF released a thermal-imagery footage showing the Indian troops destroying a Pakistani pocket across the border in retaliation to the unprovoked firing and shelling along the IB.

BSF’s retaliation to unprovoked shelling forces Pak troops to ‘plead for ceasefire’ along IB

New Delhi : Pakistan Rangers were forced to “plead for ceasefire” along the International Border after Indian troops pounded them with heavy artillery, the Border Security Force claimed on Sunday. To substantiate the statement, the BSF released a thermal-imagery footage showing the Indian troops destroying a Pakistani pocket across the border in retaliation to the unprovoked firing and shelling along the IB. “The befitting reply by BSF units to the unprovoked shelling and firing across the IB by Pakistani forces has forced them to plead for ceasefire,” a senior official said, adding that the precision fire of BSF troopers on Pakistani

firing locations inflicted heavy losses over the last three days. “And yesterday this firing found their mark with one of the rangers in chicken neck area,” the official added. “(Pakistan) Rangers called

up Jammu BSF formation today and beseeched to stop firing,” a BSF spokesman said. In the black and white footage released by the BSF, a rocket is seen cruising towards a Pakistani bunker,

resulting in a massive explosion. The BSF lost two of its jawans in this latest round of unprovoked firing on the Jammu IB over the last few days. A number of civilians were also killed and injured in the Jammu area due to this firing incident which was seen to have increased in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a marked spike in Pakistani shelling and firing along the IB and the Line of Control (LoC) this year. Over 700 incidents of fire and shelling were reported, which left 38 people including 18 security personnel dead and scores injured.

PNB fraud: CBI likely to approach Interpol for red corner notice against Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi New Delhi : The CBI is likely to approach Interpol for a Red Corner Notice against absconding billionaire jewellers Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi who are allegedly the brains behind the over USD 2 billion scam in Punjab National Bank, agency sources said. Modi along with his wife Ami, a US citizen, brother Nishal a Belgian, and uncle Choksi, Gitanjali group’s promoter, had fled the country before the bank approached the CBI with a complaint against his companies for

allegedly cheating through fraudulent issuance of Letters of Undertakings (LoUs) and Foreign Letters of Credit (FLCs). The agency recently chargesheeted both Modi

and Choksi separately in the scam and will now approach the Interpol for a Red Corner Notice aimed at bringing them back for facing trial in the cases against them,

the sources said. The PNB had approached the CBI with a complaint on the basis of which the agency had registered an FIR against Modi. The agency had immediately issued a diffusion notice with the Interpol to track Modi and Choksi but their whereabouts remain unknown, the sources said. They said the Red Corner Notice will allow enforcement agencies of the member countries of Interpol to try to find and arrest them in their respective countries.

Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday said that institutions of scientific education and research were important for innovation and expanding frontiers of knowledge.

President Ram Nath Kovind asks scientists to find solutions for challenges like climate change, water scarcity

Mohali : President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday exhorted scientists and students to work towards finding solutions to challenges such as climate change and water scarcity, while underscoring that science and technology must continue to play a role in nation building. Kovind, who was addressing the 7th convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Mohali, also encouraged students, who graduated on Sunday, to become entrepreneurs and asked them to give back to society, especially to the less privileged. “The purpose of scientific research is threefold. First, science and technology must continue to play a role in nation building. As our nation evolves and our society changes, are needs too are transformed. Yet, science and technology will always be required to find answers to developmental questions,” he said. “Today, the questions before us range

from battling climate change to providing low-cost, but effective, healthcare solutions. And, from helping our farmers overcome productivity and water-scarcity challenges to building sustainable cities and houses that are socially inclusive and provide a life of dignity to the last family in the last mohalla. The IISER network must immerse itself in these tasks,” the president said. Noting that science and technology have a symbiotic relationship with business and industry, Kovind said science and commerce can do a lot together. “Product invention and process innovation; converting the learning of the lab into commercially viable products; using technology to promote efficiency, enterprise and employment, there is so much science and commerce can do together. “The combination of research institutions, technology start-ups incubated in campuses, and a knowledge-based business culture can be transformational.

and international sphere.” The Indian envoy to Russia said the talks between the two leaders have been scheduled for 1 pm followed by lunch. “We expect them to be together for a few hours. Nirav credentials give game away

M ore details of the elaborate web of deceit spun by Nirav Modi and family are now emerging and the fugitive diamond merchant has lately been spotted in London, travelling on a Singaporean passport. And it would seem that the family had started hatching the conspiracy a long time ago. The profile of most members of Nirav Modi's family is a picture of oddities. Nirav, himself, was born in Gujarat, but was brought up in Antwerp, did business in glitzy global capitals and defrauded Indian banks. His nationality continues to be a mystery, but he is believed to be holding passports issued by several jurisdictions. His Indian passport has since been cancelled. Before being spotted in the UK, he apparently also spent time in New York, which was one of his favourite hubs. The stop before New York was Hong Kong, where the Indian authorities have already initiated proceedings to secure his extradition. But extradition from Hong Kong is believed to be a very long-drawn process. Curiously, by leaving Hong Kong before the Prime Minister's China visit, he spared Narendra Modi the embarrassment of asking his Chinese hosts for help while his billionaire countryman on the run was cooling his heels on Chinese territory. Nirav Modi's relatives, too, have mysterious credentials. His brother, Nishal Modi, is said to be living in Antwerp on a Belgian passport, while his sister, Purvi Mehta, apparently holding a Belgian passport, is in Hong Kong. But her husband, Mayank Mehta, holds a British passport and is reportedly shuttling between Hong Kong and New York, an important link in the master swindler's massive fraud network. The Indian Enforcement Directorate is on the trail of all the dramatis personae, including the father. Nirav may be trying to follow in the footsteps of Vijay Mallya, who escaped to London after having cwommitted another massive fraud and has been dodging the Indian banks and authorities for quite some time. But, by all indications, the noose is tightening on Mallya as a consortium of Indian banks recently won a major victory in a London court, which has restrained him from disposing of his assets. Another major immigration trial is nearing completion, which could mean the end of the road for the erstwhile 'King of Good Times'. The increasing frequency in Nirav Modi's change of camps indicates the intensity of heat he may be feeling from his pursuit by the Indian authorities. Probably, he had to flee New York, as a court there has ordered an investigation in connection with the bankruptcy filed by his three companies. Meanwhile, the CBI has filed its first charge sheet in the Rs13,700-crore PNB fraud in a Mumbai court and the Enforcement Directorate is also set to launch its prosecution proceedings.

Royal Wedding: Priyanka Chopra meets George Clooney and her smile says it all

The royal wedding has been the talk of the town, or rather the world over the past few days. And it’s an honour for India that one of our very own stars, Priyanka Chopra, was invited due to her friendship with the bride Meghan Markle. The actress surely managed to gain eyeballs and hogged some limelight at the ‘wedding of the year’ on Saturday. Priyanka’s appearance in a lavender blazer suit combination with a classy matching hat not just won her laurels in our country but was lauded by the foreign media. Not just that, pictures of the

‘Desi Girl’ in a conversation with Hollywood star George Clooney at the event is now going viral. Priyanka is all smiles having a hearty conversation with the veteran actor. The actress has been around for a long time starting off with ‘Quantico’, followed by ‘Baywatch’ and more, but it’s perhaps the first time she was seen with Clooney. The fact that such a popular celebrity knows and talks to her, surely means our Priyanka is a well-known face today internationally. Clooney, who

looked stylish in a grey suit and a hot beard to go with it, was accompanied by his lawyer wife Amal in a yellow outfit with matching hat and veil. Former football star David Beckham and his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, Oprah Winfrey were among the others who were the privileged few at the event. With Priyanka being discussed amid the presence of so many well-known names, she would surely feel she has worked her magic abroad, like she has done in India.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui gets scopophobic around fans!

Scopophobia, scoptophobia, or ophthalmophobia is an anxiety disorder characterised by a morbid fear of being seen or stared at by others. And that is what actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems to be suffering from at the moment. The actor is always not his usual self when he is seen at the airport or public places. “Nawaz is a common man’s hero. People like him and connect a lot with him because he looks like one of them and seems very affable as well. People come and try and take loads of selfies with him and he is very uncomfortable with all that. So, he tries to wear something on him that will not make him easily recognisable. For example, before taking flights, he wears a towel around his head and keeps his face covered as much as he can before he goes off to board the plane,” says a source. Earlier this week, Nawaz was spotted waiting in his car till it was time enough for him to check in and board a flight.

Nishant Pitti, the chief financer, and producer of films like Batti Gul Meter Chalu and Fanne Khan, is now moving court against Prerna Arora of KriArj Entertainment for fraud. The names of Bhushan Kumar of T-Series and Director Shree Narayan Singh have been added to the case. Nishant has already approached the Economic Offences Wing against alleged offenses committed by the trio. “I have paid Rs. 14 crores to Prerna Arora for Batti Gul Meter Chalu and Fanne Khan. How can someone take the film over without paying me my money?” thunders the producer and financer. Pitti also furnishes documents of payments and copies of emails exchanged on the Batti Gul Meter Chalu project. The Batti Gul Meter Chalu team recently released photographs clicked at the sets of the film. Incidentally, the film Saaho, which stars Shraddha Kapoor, has been acquired by T-Series as well. Now, it seems that the legal trouble will extend to the Aishwarya Rai- Anil Kapoor starrer, Fanne Khan too.

Karan Johar moved from love stories to lust stories for this reason It looks like Karan Johar is exploring other emotions apart from love. The director is known to create memorable onscreen romances, but now, he is all set to explore the emotion of lust in the upcoming Netflix web series Lust Stories. Along with Karan, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee will help direct the series while Ronnie Screwvala will be producing it. Talking about why this particular emotion was chosen for the series, Karan says, “When you give a choice between the words love and lust, most sensible people will choose lust. That’s what we chose in making these films.” Karan also says that his film in the series will focus on a man’s and a woman’s experience of pleasure. “My film is about seeking pleasure. It’s not just a man’s prerogative to seek pleasure. It’s also a woman’s right,” says the director. The We are Family director also feels that lust has been depicted incorrectly for so many years.

Deepika Padukone is not signing any movie, but what could be the reason for that? Irrfan Khan, who is undergoing treatment in London for a serious ailment, is on the mend and may soon return home, at least for a short visit. His next release, Karwaan, is around the corner and the team is hopeful that at some point, Irrfan will be able to join the team. Irrfan’s last release, Blackmail, was promoted without the lead actor’s presence and it was quite an ordeal for the film’s producers, as Blackmail had no other recognisable face except for Irrfan’s. Karwaan introduces the Malayalam star, Dulquer Salmaan, who is completely new to moviegoers in the city. It was hoped that Irrfan would introduce Dulquer to Bollywood audiences Karwaan’s director, Akarsh Khurana says, “We are all looking forward to Irrfan’s return. Irrfan’s performance in Karwaan is expectedly outstanding. Working with him was a dream come true. I was intimidated at first, but by the third or fourth day we had a great rapport and from then on, it was very comfortable and amazing.” Irrfan’s ill health caught Akarsh off guard. “It was a big shock.

It is no coincidence that Deepika Padukone has not signed a single film after Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat in spite of the film’s huge success. What is stopping Deepika from accepting at least one of the countless assignments she has been flooded with since the film? There are many theories as to why she is refusing virtually everything that is being offered to her. Some say it is because of a chronic shoulder and neck pain that she got while shooting a garba song during Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela. However, close friends shoot down this theory as a reason for her prolonged absence. Another theory is that Deepika is clearing the decks for her impending

marriage to Ranveer Singh. Again, a theory debunked by sources close to Deepika. “Her back/neck problem is being properly attended to and she will be fine soon. As for marriage plans, they in no way impinge on her career. The reason Deepika is not signing anything new is because of the quality of roles coming her way. They are all big-banner films with top heroes. But nothing even remotely as authorbacked or inspiring as Padmaavat. At this stage in her career, Deepika is no more content playing the conventional leading lady. It has to be a script that offers her as much to do as the male protagonist,” says a source in the know. There is also the remuneration factor.

Karan Johar feels he’s not in the position to fight Salman Khan Karan Johar – the name is enough as he has given Bollywood some huge movies (including ‘Baahubali’) to cherish. Every Bollywood star longs to work with him as his movies almost always have sureshot blockbuster elements. Karan has written history and still continues doing that, but the filmmaker feels that he’s not in a position to fight superstar Salman Khan. Karan unveiled the trailer of one of his upcoming films, actually the short film ‘Lust Stories’ (sequel to ‘Bombay Talkies’) recently, where he actually said he cannot compete with Salman. ‘Lust Stories’ releases on June 15th on Netflix, the same day as Salman Khan’s ‘Race 3’ releases in theatres and the obvious question was asked – will ‘Lust Stories’ be able to overpower ‘Race 3’, to which Karan gave the obvious answer. He said, "Salman Khan is on a different platform. He is the big master of mainstream cinema. ‘Race’ (3) is going to be a humongous film. It's a franchise film. It's a totally different film with a totally different syntax. We're not competing or fighting." Karan added, "Hamari woh aukat hi nahi hai to fight with Salman Khan or ‘Race’.

Small clubs cross fingers for World Cup windfalls

Mumbai: The ideal scenario for the club where Paul Pogba played football as a kid might go something like this: The France midfielder shines so brightly at the World Cup that a money-no-object club _ for argument’s sake, let’s say Real Madrid _ decides that it cannot live without him and pays a ninefigure fee to shake him loose from Manchester United. US Torcy, the amateur club in the east Paris suburbs where Pogba’s photo still hangs proudly in the canteen serving fizzy beer and fresh croissants, could then sit back and wait for a fat check from Madrid to land in its bank account. Not all the money that will change hands after the World Cup, as clubs trade players who distinguish themselves on football’s biggest stage, will line the pockets of selling clubs, agents and

the payers themselves. A little slice _ far too little, some argue _ of the likely deluge in postWorld Cup transfer fees will also trickle down to football’s grassroots, to unpretentious, volunteer-run clubs like Torcy where kids take first steps toward their big dreams of making a career in football. Pogba’s move from Italy to Manchester in August 2016, after he burnished his star credentials in France’s run that summer to the final of the European Championship, was like hitting the jackpot for Torcy. Because Pogba spent a year at Torcy in his formative years, FIFA’s transfer rules entitled the club to 0.25 percent of the then-world record fee of 105 million euros ($116 million) United paid to Juventus. The windfall for Torcy was about 300,000 euros ($330,000).

India should become sports-playing nation, says Sachin Tendulkar Mumbai: Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on Sunday said that India is a sportsloving nation but the country should transform itself into a sports playing nation. “I always mention that India should become a sportsplaying nation. We are a sports-loving nation but we need that transformation where we start playing. Healthy competition is always good,” Tendulkar said after inaugurating the SMAAASH centre at Seawoods Grand Central Mall. “Physical fitness and mental fitness combined

together, makes a healthy man. I remember when I was a kid, my grandmother telling me health is wealth,” the master blaster added. Later, while addressing the huge-number of crowd at the mall, the legendary batsman

appealed them to adopt a sport and play in on a regular basis. “It feels like to be back in the stadium,” Tendulkar said with the crowds chanting “Sachin-Sachin”. “To lead an active lifestyle is really important.

Elina Svitolina faced little resistance from Simona Halep in a 6-0, 6-4 win Sunday to defend her Italian Open title.

Elina Svitolina defends Italian Open title as Simona Halep injured again

Bangalore : Elina Svitolina faced little resistance from Simona Halep in a 6-0, 6-4 win Sunday to defend her Italian Open title. Just like in last year’s final, Halep appeared bothered by an injury. The top-ranked Romanian called a trainer onto the court for an apparent back problem while trailing 2-3 in the second set then exited the court for treatment under a medical timeout. “I was a little bit too stiff with my body and I couldn’t stay in the rallies,” Halep said. “The muscles were stiff. I couldn’t run.” Last year, Halep rolled her ankle in the final and lost a set lead to Svitolina. This time, Svitolina didn’t face a single break point in a match that lasted just 67 minutes. “It’s amazing that I could come and defend my title here,” Svitolina said. “It’s really something very, very special for me.” Halep said her physical problems were the result of a long three-set win over Maria Sharapova in the semifinals a day earlier “Every time I play against Sharapova the ball is coming very flat and I bend down a lot,” Halep said. The fourth-ranked Svitolina became the first woman to defend her title at the Foro Italico since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2013 and 2014. The Ukrainian picked up a winner’s check of 507,000 euros (nearly $600,000) for her 12th career title. Svitolina improved to 4-2 in her career against Halep, who had already secured the No. 1 ranking for another week by reaching the semifinals. “She deserved to win for sure,” Halep said. “She didn’t miss.

Rafael Nadal down Alexander Zverev, wins eighth title in Rome

Rome : Rafael Nadal came out on top in a matchup of this year’s top two clay-court players, beating defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 Sunday to win a record-extending eighth Italian Open title. Nadal recovered from an early break in the third set after a 50-minute rain delay. “My first victory here in 2005 is one of my greatest memories,” Nadal said during the trophy presentation. “To have this cup with me so many years later is really specialissimo.” The victory means Nadal will reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Roger Federer on

Monday. Federer is sitting out the clay season to prepare for Wimbledon. Nadal and Zverev had each won two titles on clay this season entering the final, with Nadal lifting trophies in Monte Carlo and Barcelona and Zverev taking Munich and Madrid. Nadal improved to 5-0 in his career against Zverev and gained an extra measure of confidence entering the French Open, which starts next Sunday. After two lopsided sets in the men’s final, it began to rain at the start of the third and both players grew upset when fans got up from their seats during and between points.

IPL 2018: Rohit Sharma gets unwanted record to his name in dismal season Bangalore : IPL 2018 league stage is almost over. The tournament with 56 league games are all but done with Chennai Super Kings taking on Kings XI Punjab in Pune on Sunday. This is the final game and we still have IPL Playoff spot remaining. In the first match on Sunday, Delhi Daredevils beat Mumbai Indians to end the defending champions’ hope of making it to the playoffs. Not only it was a bad season for MI team, it was worse for their captain Rohit Sharma. In the 11 seasons of IPL that Rohit has been part of, he has scored more than 300 runs in 10 of them. But this year, Rohit failed to cross the 300-run mark, making only 286 runs in this season. Until Sunday, Rohit and Suresh Raina were the only two players to have scored 300

or more runs in each season of Indian Premier League. But with Rohit failing to cross that mark this year, Raina of Chennai Super Kings is the only player to have scored 300 or more runs in all 11 seasons of IPL. Rohit’s team Mumbai crashed out of IPL 2018 after losing to Delhi and will not able to defend their title from last year.

Daredevils knock Mumbai Indians out of tournament with 11-run win New Delhi : Wooden spooners Delhi Daredevils knocked defending champions Mumbai Indians out of the Indian Premier League after the trio of Sandeep Lamichhane, Amit Mishra and Harshal Patel starred with three wickets apiece for an 11-run win in their last league match in New Delhi on Sunday. Set a target of 175, Mumbai Indians crumbled against quality legspin bowling by Sandeep (3/36), Amit Mishra (3/19) and medium pace of Patel (3/28). The visitors lost

Business BJP fall, oil rise to hit markets

Mumbai: The ongoing correction in the equity markets amidst rising oil prices and persistent weakness in the rupee is expected to gain further momentum after BJP failed to muster enough numbers to win the trust vote in the Karnataka assembly. According to experts, it’s not the BJP’s defeat in Karnataka that will impact sentiments in a big way, but the coming together of opposition parties ahead of next year general election. Based on the series of victories registered by BJP in previous state assembly elections, the markets have priced in a BJP victory in the next years election. However, experts said the task would be difficult if opposition parties come together, which is likely to pose formidable challenge to the ruling party at the centre. “The markets are likely to see a knee jerk reaction as the events

in the past few days have made opposition much stronger. The coming together of opposition parties is likely to change the domestic political scene in coming days,” said Ambareesh Baliga, senior research analyst. Experts added that the markets already had a whiff about the changing political dynamics following which they witnessed some amount of selling on Friday itself. “The small and mid-cap stocks are already under pressure. Going forward, global factors like rising crude oil prices and increase in interest rate by the US Federal Reserve would have more influence on the domestic markets,” added Mr Baliga. With BJP losing Karnataka, Ajay Bodke, chief executive officer and chief portfolio manager (PMS), Prabhudas Lilladher said the ongoing correction is likely to gather momentum.

three wickets — Evin Lewis (48), Kieron Pollard (7) and Krunal Pandya (4) — in five balls at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Hardik Pandya (27) and skipper Rohit Sharma (13) added 43 runs before they were sent back as Mumbai slipped to 122 for seven in 14.5 overs. Ben Cutting tried his hand with a 19-ball 37 before MI were dismissed for 163 in 19.3 overs. Mumbai’s ouster makes the final league match between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab interesting as the latter will not

only have to win the contest but also better the net run rate of Rajasthan Royals (-0.250). Earlier, Rishab Pant (64) continued his purple patch, hitting his fifth halfcentury of the season, to guide Delhi to a competitive score. The 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman shared a 64-run fourth wicket stand off 47 balls with Vijay Shankar (43 not out) to lay the foundation. Lamichhane then rocked Mumbai’s chase early, removing the inform Suryakumar Yadav (4) cheaply. However, Evin

Lewis (48) exploded in the fourth over, hitting Patel for two fours and a six. He treated Glenn Maxwell with equal disdain, clearing the ropes twice, as MI zoomed to 50 for one in five overs. Ishan Kishan (5) was then caught at long-on off Amit Mishra. The leg-spinner was unlucky not to have the wicket of Kirton Pollard who was dropped by Prithvi Shaw off his bowling. The West Indian got another respite when an airborne Abhishek Sharma failed to held on to a catch off Liam Plunkett.

Sebi last week issued a warning letter to PNB for delaying Revenue dept to make businesses disclosures to stock exchanges about the fraudulent transactions. file GST returns within deadline Sebi to consider penal action against PNB, Gitanjali Gems New Delhi: As the average of GST returns filed on time remaining just 65 per cent, the revenue department is sending notices to non-filers through emails asking them to submit returns within three days of the expiry of the deadline despite up to 15 days time limit, tax experts said. The due date for filing GST summary returns for a month is 20th day of the subsequent month, but many businesses registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) file after the deadline by paying late fee and penalty. Tax experts said these emails are automated and system-generated and the time limit given to file returns vary from immediately to three days to 15 days. In one such notices being sent to a 'return defaulter' for not filing GSTR-3B or the summary sales returns, revenue authorities asked the taxpayer to furnish the return for a particular month "within three days, failing which the tax liability would be assessed under the GST Act, 2017"."In addition to the tax assessed, you will be

liable to pay interest and penalty as per provisions of the Act," the notice read. AMRG & Associates Partner Rajat Mohan said under the GST laws, in case a registered person fails to furnish a return, a notice can be issued requiring him to furnish such return within 15 days. "However, as seen in several cases a taxpayer is given meagre three days (including holidays) to submit GSTR–3B. These notices issued electronically and automatically seems to be suffering from judicial overreach, as it has foregone the mandatory 15 days period for taxpayers to respond," Mohan said. Deloitte India Partner M S Mani said the notices for nonsubmission of the GST returns would improve the compliance level significantly. "These notices indicate that the tax authorities have started keeping a watch on the non-filers or occasional-filers, who may not be able to escape the tax net in future," Mani said. As per official data, while 57.69 per cent of the

GST returns for July were filed within the due date, the figure has now gone up to 96.10 per cent. For August and September, the percentage of returns filed within due date was 36.98 per cent and 50.29 per cent, which has gone up to 93 per cent and 91 per cent respectively. Similarly, for the month of January and February, about 65 per cent and 64 per cent of the returns were filed within due date, and the number has now crossed 81 per cent and 77 per cent respectively. For March, 62.63 per cent of GSTR-3B returns were filed within due date, which had gone up to 69.5 per cent on April 30-- the last date for calculating tax mop up during the month. EY India Partner Abhishek Jain said with the data analytics suggesting non-filing of returns by some percentage of registered taxpayers, the government should inspect the reasons for such default. "The current notices issued to such defaulters being the opening move," he said.

New Delhi: Markets regulator Sebi will consider penal action against Punjab National Bank and Gitanjali Gems after completion of its probe into suspected trading and disclosure related issues in the matter of over Rs 14,000 crore banking fraud, senior officials said. The markets watchdog last week issued a warning letter to PNB for delaying disclosures to stock exchanges about the fraudulent transactions allegedly carried out by absconding Nirav Modi and Gitanjali Group of companies. However, the probe is continuing and the penal action would depend on the final outcome of the investigation, the officials added. PNB was defrauded allegedly by the diamond trader and his associates by fraudulent use of Letters of Undertakings (LoUs) and Foreign Letters of Credit (LoC) in connivance with certain bank officials.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and stock exchanges have been analysing the stock market trade details of all entities associated with Modi and Gitanjali Gems' main promoter Mehul Choksi, who has already been under scanner for various cases including a brokerage default incident, senior officials said. Incidentally, in July 2013, NSE in consultation with Sebi had debarred Gitanjali Gems and Choksi, among others from trading, for securities

market violations relating to trading in his company. Further, they are also being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). As per Sebi's warning letter, there were delays of 1-6 days by PNB in making disclosures to the stock exchanges pertaining to the filing of complaints with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and CBI. This delay in informing the stock exchanges is a violation of the listing regulations.

Texas school shooting: I’m going to kill you, he said before opening fire Santa Fe : The suspect in the Texas school shooting began his attack by firing a shotgun through an art classroom door, shattering a glass pane and sending panicked students to the entryway to block him from getting inside, witnesses said. Dmitrios Pagourtzis fired again through the wooden part of the door and fatally hit a student in the chest. He then lingered for about 30 minutes in a warren of four rooms, killing seven more

students and two teachers before exchanging gunfire with police and surrendering, officials said. Freshman Abel San Miguel saw his friend Chris Stone killed at the door. San Miguel was grazed on the left shoulder by another volley of shots. He and others survived by playing dead. “We were on the ground, all piled up in random positions,” he said. Galveston County Judge Mark Henry, the county’s chief administrator, said

he did not think Friday’s attack was 30 minutes of constant shooting, and that assessment was consistent with other officials who said law enforcement contained the shooter quickly. But authorities did not release a detailed timeline to explain precisely how events unfolded. Junior Breanna Quintanilla was in art class when she heard the shots and someone say, “If you all move, I’m going to shoot you all.”
