Kathua, Unnao cases: Your assurances of justice for rape victims ‘wholly inadequate, platitudinous’, academics tell PM Modi Days after Narendra Modi denounced the Kathua and Unnao rape incidents, a total of 637 academics and independent scholars from India and abroad said that the prime minister’s assurances of justice for the victims were “wholly inadequate, platitudinous, and nonspecific”. Last Friday, PM Modi, in a delayed response over the rape and murder of an eight-year-

old girl in Kathua and the alleged rape of a teenager by a BJP MLA in Unnao, said the culprits will not be spared. Thereafter, in London, he insisted that rapes should not be politicised. In an open letter to PM Modi, the academics expressed their “deep anger and anguish over the events in Kathua and Unnao and the aftermath of these events; over the efforts, in both cases, of those

administering the relevant states to protect the alleged perpetrators of these monstrous crimes; over the subsequent profoundly distasteful efforts of rationalisation, deflection and diversion that have been so much in evidence in the reactions of your (BJP) party’s spokespersons in the media.” The academics further said that the prime minister broke his “prolonged (and by now familiar) silence” with

The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday had directed the trial court, hearing a sexual assault case against Asaram Bapu, to pronounce its judgment inside the Jodhpur Central Jail to prevent a breach of law and order situation in the city.

Asaram rape case: Jodhpur Police to impose Section 144 ahead of verdict, judgment to be pronounced from inside jail New Delhi: In a bid to prevent any untoward incident before the selfstyled godman Asaram Bapu’s rape case verdict on April 25, Jodhpur Police on Saturday said they will impose Section 144 till April 30, reported news agency . Meanwhile, arrangements for pronouncing the verdict is being done within the jail premises. The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday had directed the trial court, hearing a sexual assault case against Asaram Bapu, to pronounce its judgment inside the Jodhpur Central Jail to prevent a breach of law and order situation in the city. The court had also directed the Jail Superintendent to make necessary arrangements

inside the premises.“It cannot be said that (Asaram’s) followers will not create hurdle or unhealthy atmosphere which may create not only hardship and inconvenience to the public at large of Jodhpur city but also law and order problem,” the court said in its order.Ahead of the judgment, the district administration has tightened the security around the house of the victim. “The security of the victim’s family is continuously being

monitored. Five policemen have been deployed at the house and a strict vigil is being maintained on all the visitors,” SP (City) Dinesh Tripathi was quoted as saying by news agency. The order to pronounce verdict from inside the jail premises came following the request by the police requesting that it cannot be delivered in the court premises as it may lead to clashes between security personnel and the godman’s followers.

“wholly inadequate, platitudinous, and non-specific assurances of justice for the victims.” They further asserted that Kathua and Unnao are not isolated incidents. “They are part of a pattern of repeated targeted attacks on minority religious communities, Dalits, tribals and women, in which rape and lynching have been employed as instruments of violence by gau rakshaks and others.

India shares good ties with neighbours except with one ‘who doesn’t listen’: Rajnath Singh New Delhi : In a sharp yet veiled attack on Pakistan, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said India has always maintained good relations with its neighbours, except with the “one who doesn’t listen”. While stressing on the Centre’s intentions to bring an end to terrorism, the minister said Pakistan will “have to listen someday” in the wake of mounting global pressure. “We have always wanted to maintain good relations with our neighbouring countries. We consider our neighbours our relatives. However, one of them doesn’t listen. But, they will have to listen to them. All international forces are putting pressure on them,” Singh told a public gathering in Diu. Accusing Pakistan of fomenting terrorism on Indian soil, the minister said the security forces were leaving no stone unturned to give a fitting reply to its neighbour. “International agencies are trying their best to convince them to boycott terrorism.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, has had a turbulent relationship with the current BJP leadership including party chief Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi since the party came to power in 2014. He has been a vocal critic of the current regime and has spoken out in open on various issues, including demonetisation, Goods and Services Tax or government’s handling of the economy.

"Both Modi ji and Yogi ji have done tremendous work to change the state of Uttar Pradesh in the last one year and I assure you all that we will make UP the number one state in five years," said BJP president Amit Shah.

BJP will rid Rae Bareli of ‘parivarvad’, will bring development: Amit Shah at Gandhi family pocket borough

New Delhi : Taking his party’s fight against the Congress to the Gandhi family’s home turf, BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday said his party will develop Rae Bareli – which “since independence has seen ‘parivarvad’ and not development”- as an ideal constituency. Addressing a rally in Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s constituency, Shah said that Rae Bareli voted for top Congress leaders, but did not witness development. “I have come here to make it clear that the BJP will free Rae Bareli of ‘parivarvad’ and will start the campaign from today itself for taking it on the path of ‘vikasvad’ (development),” he said. Shah also heaped praise

on the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government for “restoring law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh which was notorious for goons and guns under previous governments”. “Both Modi ji and Yogi ji have done tremendous work to change the state of Uttar Pradesh in the last one year and I assure you all that we will make UP the number one state in five years,” he said. He also used the dias to corner the Congress over the 2007 Hyderabad Mecca Masjid blast case, saying Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and his leaders tried to “defame” the Hindus in terror cases. “When Congress was in power, then Aseemanand was named as accused in the blast case.

Shatrughan Sinha dares BJP to take action against him Shatrughan Sinha's remarks at an event hosted by Yashwant Sinha came shortly after the former Union finance minister quit the party alleging threat to democracy under the present dispensation. Patna : Hours after Yashwant Sinha announced quitting the BJP, actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha dared the ruling party to take action against him if it wants to but made it clear he won’t resign from its membership on his own. Shatrughan Sinha has been at loggerheads with the current BJP leadership since the 2015 Bihar elections. He has often taken a stance at variance with the official party line, including on demonetisation, implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, and on the union government’s policy on Kashmir. “I heard that the party is contemplating to take action against me since the Bihar Assembly polls but they did not take action. Are they so helpless that they will look for a mohurat to expel (me),” the Patna Saheb lawmaker said. His remarks at an event hosted by Yashwant Sinha came shortly after the former Union finance minister quit the party alleging threat to democracy under the present dispensation.

The event was organised by the Rashtra Manch, a political action group Yashwant Sinha launched in January, at the S K Memorial Hall in Patna. During its launch, Shatrughan Sinha – popularly known as the “Bihari Babu” – led a group of politicians in joining the Manch. Today’s event was attended by a number of leaders of anti-BJP parties, including the Congress, the RJD, the TMC and the Samajwadi Party. “Whenever they (the BJP leadership)

want to take action, they can do so but they must remember Newton’s third law that every action has an equal and opposite reaction,” Shatrughan Sinha warned. He said he has always maintained he would never quit the party. “I have not joined the party to leave it. I have always maintained that this is my first and last party and I can not quit the party. It’s another thing if they want to leave me. But I will not violate the dignity till I am with the party.”

Why Congress wants Dipak Misra gone

'T he day after' is often a good three words to begin a story. Especially if the day before was one of momentous occasion. A day of setback, or stupendous success. The Congress, on Thursday, was with its back to the wall after the verdict on the judge Loya death case and the BJP stood at ease. Friday, the Congress hit back. It moved a motion to impeach CJI Dipak Misra on five counts of 'misbehaviour'. At high noon on Friday, members of Parliament of the Opposition met vice-president and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu and submitted to him the impeachment motion, which requires a minimum of 50 members of Parliament to pass. Lawyer and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal presented the Opposition case to the media. A total of 71 Rajya Sabha MPs signed the motion and 64 of them are Rajya Sabha MPs more than the 50 required for the safe passage of the motion and discuss threadbare the CJI's 'misbehaviour', rip his reputation apart and hope some of it sticks to the ruling dispensation. The time frame 'But when?' is the question. CJI Dipak Misra retires in October this year! It will take six months for the motion to be admitted and either the Rajya Sabha Chairman or the Speaker of the Lok Sabha can reject the motion. Expecting such a setback, it is being said that the Congress will take the matter to the Supreme Court, where the CJI cannot sit on the Bench because he would be under a shadow and 'compromised' because of the impeachment motion. The Congress says there is 'nothing political about the motion' and that the Opposition is doing it solely out of its love for the 'independence' of the judiciary, which is 'paramount'.And that the CJI's behaviour was, without doubt, not above suspicion. "He has to be restrained," Sibal said. "Yeh koi chotti-moti baat nahi hai. This is not instant coffee." Opposition's problem The problem for the Opposition is that, going by the Constitution, a judge can be targeted only with regard to 'misbehaviour' and not because the judge gave a judicial order which was not palatable to a political party But the fact remains that the verdict in the judge Loya case went against the 'lobby' and the 3-judge Bench headed by the CJI was scathing against the PIL-brigade guided by a 'veiled hand', and, therefore, within the ambit of motivation The key charges levelled against CJI 'Conspiracy to pay illegal gratification' in the Prasad Education Trust case Denial of permission to proceed against a retired high court judge in the same matter Another charge listed by the Opposition parties pertains to a piece of land which the CJI acquired as an advocate by giving a 'false affidavit' Would Cong have reacted the same on a different verdict?.

Filmmaker Sajid Khan has decided that the much-awaited Housefull 4 will have the best ensemble cast to make it an even more entertaining ride for Housefull fans. While Kriti Sanon has been locked in for this version of the franchise, a source reveals that actress Huma Qureshi, too, could be part of this project. “Sajid Khan likes to keep things under wraps until an official announcement is made by the production house. But, as far as Huma is concerned, the makers have already had a meeting with her and are keen to cast her,” a source said. Housefull 4 will be the first-ever Indian comedy to release in 3D. It would be interesting to see a versatile actress like Huma joining hands with Sajid for this successful franchise. The cast of the film, reportedly, also includes Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and others. Sajid is apparently planning a reincarnation theme for the film, which is slated for a Diwali 2019 release.

IPL 2018: I am in a good space, don’t want to stop whatever I am doing, says KL Rahul

Manika Batra created history in Gold Coast, single-handedly taking India to a maiden team gold before winning a singles gold, another first.

KL Rahul's explosive half-century powered Kings XI Punjab to a well-deserved victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. Mumbai : KL Rahul’s explosive halfcentury powered Kings XI Punjab to a well-deserved victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. Opening the batting for KXIP, Rahul began his innings with aplomb hitting two boundaries in the first over. From thereon he took the attack to the bowlers carting them all over the park. His 60 which came off just 27 balls, featured nine fours and two sixes. But not once did he look out of sorts nor did he attempt any rash shots. Playing proper cricketing shots, the 26-year-old proved his mettle once again. Along with Chris Gayle Rahul stitched a hundred run opening stand as KXIP romped home comfortably. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Rahul said, “I don’t want to stop whatever I am doing. I am in a good space and want to win games. The approach is going to be aggressive and to take the bowlers down within my limitations with

whatever I am gifted with. It’s working for me. The simpler you keep it, the more clearer you will be as a batsman. I don’t want to complicate my batting, just see the ball and hit the ball. I bank a lot on cricketing shots. My feet are moving and I am hitting the ball well.” “I got to make sure that I should make it big and stay there till the end. Me and Chris want to back our games. If Chris is going it doesn’t mean I slow down. If he fancies a bowler, then I let him strike. But it hasn’t been that way. We’ve spoken something else outside, but once we are out there, we just continue what we are doing and not thinking too much,” he added. Complementing him for his innings, fellow teammate and opener Chris Gayle said, “I think Rahul deserves it, he’s been batting really well. I have been striking well and when you are in the zone, you try to keep the momentum going.”

Mumbai : Whoever succeeds Arsene Wenger at Arsenal won’t be allowed to amass the same power. “Arsene earned his position at this club over 22 years,” Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said on Friday. “I don’t think that there will be other managers, if you look forward, who will have kind of authority at the top of the game with the biggest clubs. “Obviously, it is the most important appointment that any club makes and the most important employee that any club has so I don’t

diminish the role. I just think it would be unrealistic to think that anybody comes in with the breadth and scope that Arsene had at Arsenal.” Hours after the 68-year-old coach announced he was stepping down at the end of the season, Gazidis was not giving anything away about the identity of the next occupant of the Arsenal dugout. The qualities desired were listed, though. “Our fans want to see somebody who will continue to play progressive, exciting football that gets people interested and

Manika Batra, Harmeet Desai recommended for Arjuna Award Mumbai : The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) on Friday recommended Manika Batra, the country’s only quadruple medallist at the Commonwealth Games, for Arjuna Award. Harmeet Desai has also been recommended for the prestigious award. “We sent her nomination today. With such a strong performance in Gold Coast, it will be very difficult for the (government) committee to ignore her,” a TTFI official told news agancy. Batra created history in Gold Coast, singlehandedly taking India to a maiden team gold before winning a singles gold, another first. The 22-year-old beat world number four and triple Olympic medallist, Feng Tianwei of Singapore, twice in the tournament. She also secured a women’s doubles silver alongside Mouma Das and mixed doubles bronze with G Sathiyan. Her next assignment is the World Team Championships in Sweden from April 29. Harmeet Desai, who was part of the men’s team that won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, has also been recommended for the Arjuna Award.

ICC asks Mithali Raj if she has ever experienced any approach by bookies

Mumbai : Indian women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj was on Sunday asked whether she has ever experienced any approach by the bookies to fix a match as the ICC’s five-day meeting got underway in Kolkata. Mithali was here as a ‘special invitee’ as the ICC’s quarterly meeting began with discussions on women’s cricket. “She was here for a small part during the meeting. She was asked whether she has encountered any instances of match fixing. She said she

has not till date,” an ICC official said. Since Under-19 and women’s matches are being televised more and more, ICC wants to take precautionary measures. Before any ICC event, even the U-19 and women’s teams have to attend the classes of the ICC integrity unit on how to tackle corrupt approaches. While the focus is more on U-19s as it’s about teenagers, women’s game is also becoming popular due to live coverage on television.

Rafa Nadal’s bid for an 11th Monte Carlo title gaining momentum Hyderabad : Rafael Nadal’s bid for a record-extending 11th Monte Carlo Masters title is proving more comfortable than he imagined after his latest return from injury. Others may not be so surprised, given how the topranked Spaniard won nine straight games while beating fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem 6-0, 6-2 to reach the semifinals on Friday. “I played great. I played so well this afternoon, playing very aggressive, backhand, forehand, serve. I’m defending well, returning well,”

said Nadal, affording himself another rare compliment. “It is difficult to play better than today. Being honest, I have to recognize that.” Nadal recently returned from a right hip injury, which forced him to retire during the Australian Open quarterfinals. The problem then flared up again, and he dropped out of the Mexico Open and Masters tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami. But since coming back in early April, Nadal has not even dropped a set in five straight wins, including two in singles for Spain in the Davis Cup.

Arsene Wenger’s successor won’t enjoy same authority at Arsenal excited in the games that we play,” Gazidis said. “I also think there is a significant piece in Arsenal Football Club in how the candidate represents the club and I think it’s important to Arsenal fans.” The turbulent last five years at Manchester United should act as a cautionary tale to the board at Arsenal as the club hires a new manager for the first time this century. Just as Alex Ferguson had his fingerprints all over Old Trafford after nearly 27 years in charge at United, Wenger and his

Business

philosophy is ingrained at Emirates Stadium. United has had three managers since Ferguson quit in 2013, with Jose Mourinho finally looking like a good fit following the underwhelming tenures of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal. “We have to be open-minded and brave in the decision,” Gazidis said. “When Arsene was appointed, I don’t think he was on many people’s radar. That doesn’t mean we have to repeat that but it does mean we have to be bold in the appointment.”

Forex reserves at life-time high of USD 426.082 billion

Gold is trading at Rs 32,450 per 10 grams at the bullion market on increased buying by local jewellers.

Gold maintains rising trend on jewellers' buying

Mumbai: Gold extended gains for the third straight week to close at Rs 32,450 per 10 grams at the bullion market on increased buying by local jewellers amid volatile global cues. Silver followed suit and recaptured the Rs 41,000-mark on increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Marketmen said increased buying by local jewellers on the auspicious occasion of 'Akshya Tritiya' on Wednesday and beginning of wedding season, kept the precious metal prices higher. Besides, the rupee hitting a 13-month low

to crack 66-mark against the dollar, making imports costlier, too supported the upside in gold prices, they added. Globally,

gold after crossing the USD 1,353 an ounce, finally ended the week shade lower at USD 1,335.20 an ounce in volatile trade in New York. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity

commenced the week lower at Rs 32,000 and Rs 31,850 per ten grams respectively due to lack of buying support. Later, it met with brisk buying activity largely in sync with a firm trend overseas and weakness in the rupee and bounced back to hit a high of Rs 32,630 and Rs 32,480 before ending at Rs 32,450 and Rs 32,300 per 10 grams respectively, showing a significant rise of Rs 350 each. Sovereign, however, moved in a narrow range in scattered deals throughout the week and settled at previous level of Rs 24,900 per piece of eight gram.

Mumbai: The country's foreign exchange reserves expanded by USD 1.217 billion to touch a life-time high of USD 426.082 billion in the week to April 13, helped by rise in foreign currency assets, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said.In the previous week, the reserves had increased by USD 503.6 million to reach USD 424.864 billion. It had crossed the USD 400-billion mark for the first time in the week to September 8, 2017, but has since been fluctuating. In the reporting week, the foreign currency assets, a major component of the overall reserves, increased

by USD 1.202 billion to USD 400.978 billion. Expressed in the US dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of the non-US currencies such as euro, pound and Japanese yen held in the reserves. Gold reserves remained unchanged at USD 21.484 billion in the reporting week, the central bank said. The special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) increased by USD 6.6 million to USD 1.540 billion. The country's reserve position with the IMF also rose by USD 8.9 million to USD 2.079 billion, RBI said.

The Sensex gained 1,596.11 or 4.90 per cent during previous three weeks session.

Market ends higher for fourth straight week, up 222 points Mumbai: Maintaining its uptrend for the fourth straight week, the benchmark Sensex garnered another 222.93 points to finish at 34,415.58, while the broader Nifty reclaimed to settle above the key 10,500-level at 10,564.05. Once again market resilience came to the fore as largely volatile range-bound week trade saw the bulls remained intact heartened by Met department forecast of normal monsoon and stellar quarterly results led the bulls to remain intact while enduring the hawkish policy statements from RBIs minutes. Starting the week on strong note, the key indices shrugged off geopolitical tensions between US and Russia over Syria, ease in Wholesale price Inflation (WPI) and rally in stock specifics invigorated the market even as the Sensex marked longest session win not

seen since three years during the week. North Korea suspends nuclear missile testing, aims to focus on economic development

New Delhi : North Korea on Saturday announced that it will bring an end to the tests of nuclear devices and missiles ahead of its summits with Seoul and Washington saying that it “no longer needs” to test its weapons capability. “Under the proven condition of complete nuclear weapons, we no longer need any nuclear tests, mid-range and intercontinental ballistic rocket tests, and that the nuclear test site in northern area has also completed its mission,” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was quoted as saying by state-run KCNA news agency. Kim further said that the country would close its nuclear testing facility at Punggye-ri, though that site was already believed to have been rendered largely unusable due to tunnel collapses after the North’s test of what it claimed was a hydrogen bomb last year. The announcement is seen as an opening

gambit aimed at setting the tone for talks ahead of Kim’s summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in next Friday and US President Donald Trump in late May or early June. Analysts believe that Kim is entering the negotiation from a position of strength and is hoping to achieve tacit recognition that his country is now a nuclear power. It appears to signify a remarkable change in policy for Kim as he seeks a “favorable” international environment for economic development so that he can put the economy “on an upward spiral track.” Not just this, it also recently agreed to drop its objections to USSouth Korean military exercises, and the positioning of US troops in the South. However, Kim gave no indication Pyongyang might be willing to give up its nuclear weapons, or the missiles with which it can reach the mainland United States.

US Treasury chief may go to China as trade tensions simmer Surat : IN A fresh breakthrough in the rape and brutal murder of a minor girl, whose body with 86 injury marks was found from near a playground in Pandesara area of Surat on April 6, the police on Friday said that they have detained three persons, including one from Sawai Madhopur district in neighbouring Rajasthan, in connection with the case. The police have also initiated a probe to ascertain if the body of a woman, which was found in the same locality during the same period, was that of the mother of the girl who hails from Sawai Madhopur

district. Primary leads indicated that the prime accused Harsh Gujjar, a civil contractor detained from Rajasthan, had paid Rs 35,000 to “buy” the woman and her child as labourers, said police sources. The latest breakthrough in the probe has set aside the claims of a man from Andhra Pradesh who had said that the dead girl, believed to be between nine and 11 years old, was his daughter who had gone missing from her school in October last year. Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said that the interrogation of the accused was underway to ascertain

the identity of the victim. According to the Surat Crime Branch, which is probing the case with the help of a four-member team from Ahmedabad Crime Branch, the breakthrough came from a CCTV footage which showed that on the night of April 5, two cars — a Maruti Wagon R and a Chevrolet Spark — had passed through the spot from where the girl’s body was found the next morning. On questioning, the owner of the Chevrolet Spark broke down and confessed that his car had been used in disposing of the body of the girl, said police.

Kodnani has been on bail for health reasons.

Still the Congress leaders do not want to believe it….The Congress party is trying to tarnish the image of the judiciary,” he said.

When asked if the BJP will welcome Kodnani back into active politics after the judgment, Vaghani said, “Surely, according to her willingness; she has been our worker in the past, she is one even today and tomorrow. She keeps on working as a worker. Washington : US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin may visit China, in a move that could help defuse rising trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies that threaten to derail a global economic recovery. The United States has threatened to impose tariffs on $50 billion of Chinese imports in a bid to try and force Beijing to stop its companies from stealing American companies’ intellectual property.“A trip is under consideration,” Mnuchin said at a press conference during the International Monetary Fund and World Bank spring

meetings in Washington on Saturday. “I am not going to make any comment on timing, nor do I have anything confirmed, but a trip is under consideration.” Beijing has threatened retaliation against US exports if Washington pushes ahead with the tariffs. The risks of a spiraling trade war were highlighted when US President Donald Trump told his trade team to identify another $100 billion in Chinese imports that could be hit with tariffs. Mnuchin said he met with China’s new central bank governor, Yi Gang, during the IMF and World Bank meetings and discussed the potential for China to open its markets to more foreign competition. “I did meet with the Chinese here. The discussions were really more around the governor’s actions at the PBOC (People’s Bank of China) and certain actions they’ve announced in terms of opening some of their markets, which we very much encourage and appreciate.”

Madagascar police fire teargas at opposition protests

Antananarivo : Madagascar police fired teargas at opposition demonstrators protesting against new electoral laws they say are designed to lock out their candidate from a presidential election due later this year. Supporters of Marc Ravalomanana, a former leader of the Indian Ocean island nation, say the new electoral laws are designed to prevent him running in the election. The opposition is also contending provisions on campaign financing and access to media in the laws.

Ravalomanana, who was deposed in a 2009 coup, has teamed up with the man who succeeded him, Andy Rajoelina, to oppose the laws pushed by President Hery Rajaonarimampianina. Hundreds of protesters gathered in the centre of the capital early on Saturday to protest against the laws which were enacted by parliament earlier this month, before police fired dozens of teargas canisters at the crowd. “Two people were injured. We are taking care of them now,” said

Olivat Rakoto, director of the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona hospital in the city. One opposition lawmaker accused the government of attacking opposition MPs while carrying out their work and demanded the president’s resignation. “Hery Rajaonarimampianina has to resign, he attacks members of Parliament which are in the line of their duty,” said Paul Bert Rahasimanana who represents a constituency in the capital.
