FC Goa face Pune in do-or-die encounter

Pune: FC Goa will face an uphill task in their bid to stay relevant when they square off with FC Pune City in an Indian Super League encounter, here tomorrow. Having bagged only a couple of points from their last five encounters, FC Goa have slipped to seventh position with 21 points from 15 games and now face one of the most consistent teams in the league in Pune, who are placed second with 29 from 16 games. FC Pune City are only a point away from qualifying for the semi-finals for the first time since inception of the league in 2014 -- a motivation enough for their coach Ranko Popovic.

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the Amma Two-Wheeler scheme in Chennai. Speaking to the audience in Chennai, PM Modi greeted the people first in Tamil before delivering his address. “On the occasion of the birth anniversary of J Jayalalithaa, I pay my

well in the empowerment of women. “When we empower women, we empower the household. When we provide them education and health and secure her future, we do so for their home. As the Central government, we are working in this direction,” he said. Speaking of the

This shows that women are coming out and focusing on self-employment,” he said. “We have also made a change in the Factory’s Act & suggested to States that they allow women to work in the night shift as well. You first make us understand how did Nirav Modi take Rs 22,000 crore from Indian banks under the nose of Narendra Modi’s government,” he said. Nirav Modi and the myth of the path to success

A few months ago, GQ magazine tried to understand the extraordinary success of the jeweller Nirav Modi. Was he “a marketing genius”, or “a master diamantaire” who knew how to extract work from talented craftsmen, or a capitalist romantic who wanted to rebel against tradition and “make a billion-dollar point”? The article did not ponder other options. It praised his “imperious, ballsy core” and his “razor-sharp PR strategy”. In 2016, a short profile on CNBC.com attributed his success to “a passion for diamonds and an understanding of luxury”. The profile conveyed that he was self-made, a coveted label that implies innate brilliance. He was quoted in the profile as saying that he “never borrowed from family”. Now we know where he borrowed from—several banks, reportedly collecting thousands of crores in alleged collusion with executives from a public sector bank who broke the rules to help him. He was a player in a corrupt system, and now faces serious charges. Until a few weeks ago, a vast number of small and aspiring entrepreneurs saw in his life and words, as they normally do see in the lives of billionaires, a path to material success. But in the telling of his story, in the analysis of his success, what he omitted was a fact he must have known—that he was committing a fraud, or a technical fraud. It was an important omission. Even if we consider the possibility that he is “a marketing genius” and that he had a deep “understanding of luxury”, the fact is that his extraordinary and swift success over the past decade was built on some shady dealings. The real message was that you have to game the system to be a very rich person in India. If you do not know how, or if you do not have “the ballsy core” for it, you are nurturing a wrong aspiration. We do not know if this message is true. We only know that in the case of several disgraced rich people, it has been true. This is the sort of detail that is usually omitted from inspirational stories—an unflattering or a nefarious truth that is usually so crucial to the success of the inspirational figure that every other factor is trivial. What if the truth is that every analysis of success in the world contains such crucial omissions? What if corruption, or even luck, is not merely a contributor to success but more fundamental than that? What if success is often a consequence of unspoken or inglorious or even unknown and mysterious causes? What if the publicly shared reasons for material success are, in reality, inconsequential? This means the notion of The Path is an illusion, and the entire aspiration market has been fed only the placebo of inspiration. The podcasts, books and interviews that explain the success of the successful might be precious as journalism, as knowledge, but even as broad guides to how to achieve your own success, they may never help you in the objective.

New Delhi: It’s been 19 years of togetherness and the spark in Ajay Devgn and Kajol’s married life is still alive. You might not spot them sharing intimate moments in the public or professing their love in front of the paparazzi. Still, Kajol and Ajay are one of the most sought-after couples of Bollywood. Reason? Their perfect understanding of each other and of their relationship. They are chalk and cheese in real life. While Kajol is known for saying things as they are, Ajay is a man of few words.Today as they celebrate their wedding anniversary, we acquaint you with how this reel life romance took a real-life turn. Kajol met Ajay on the sets of 1995 film Hulchul. The film fell in Kajol’s lap after the sudden death of actor Diva Bharti. But here, Ajay and Kajol didn’t even become friends. Kajol’s first impression of Ajay, as she revealed at a chat show, was, “Who’s this guy? What kind of a personality does he have? He sits in one corner and smokes like a chimney and even doesn’t speak to

ceremony since Ajay being an introvert didn’t want media attention. In his own words, Ajay once said, “We never resorted to the usual ‘I Love you’ routine. A proposal never happened. We grew with each other. Marriage was never discussed, but it was always imminent.” The duo tied the knot in a typical Maharashtrian style wedding on February 24, 1999 at Ajay’s residence. Talking about her husband, Kajol once said, “He is not a romantic person who will buy me a rose

on a Valentine’s Day and I have to always remind him our wedding anniversary three days in advance but he always looks out for me. I never feel unsafe anywhere because I know he is always behind me standing there for me. He backs me one hundred percent and he knows I am there for him as well.” Ajay and Kajol are a couple who reminds us that true love does not lie in photos with philosophical lines of love, it is when partners show their support to each other.

churning out hits after hits, his fans gave him the sobriquet ‘Natural Star Nani’ and through his performances, he has always lived up to the tag. In each and every film, Nani has always concentrated on getting into the skin of the character and kept his performances as realistic as possible. Unlike other stars, one can never see an over-the-top performance from him, he always likes to play it subtle. Nani has always been picky about scripts and it has worked in his favour. After delivering a blockbuster hit in 2015 with Bhale Bhale Magadivoy, most of the films in the last couple of years were box-office hits. He is on a terrific streak with three hit films (Nenu Local, Ninnu Kori and Middle Class Abbayi) in 2017. His latest outing as a producer, Awe, has earned him laurels. With this film, he has once again proved his flair for picking offbeat yet interesting scripts. The actor is currently shooting for director Merlapaka Gandhi’s Krishnarjuna Yudham in which he plays dual roles. He will also team up with Akkineni Nagarjuna for a film which will be helmed by Sriram Adittya. As Nani steps into his tenth year as an actor, he has a huge responsibility to maintain his streak of hits. Will he be open to experimenting with offbeat genres?

He also said that he will not be able to clear the dues or pay future salaries of his employees. Choksi said that a ‘situation of fear and injustice’ has been created against him and the organisation. “...with the recent ‘false allegations’ levelled against me of defrauding the PNB and media frenzy, the situation has gone grave which is turning graver by the day,” he wrote in the letter to his

Reliance Jio threatens action against COAI over ‘defamatory’ remarks

Mumbai: Reliance Jio on Friday responded to the recent comments by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) which alleged the telecom regulator TRAI of favouring a ‘certain operator’. Jio said that the COAI had become a mouthpiece of incumbents like Airtel and is issuing “defamatory” and “malicious” statements. Accusing industry body COAI of allegedly playing into the hands of large operators and acting as their “mouthpiece”, Jio warned that it “reserves its rights to initiate criminal and civil defamation proceedings, including damages, against both COAI and Incumbent Dominant Operators (IDOs)”. Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) was not immediately available for comments, despite several attempts. In a strongly-worded letter to COAI yesterday, Jio said that the press release issued by the industry body on February 20, 2018 claiming that the regulator’s orders put all but one operator at a serious disadvantage was “intentionally, wrongfully and maliciously made to induce disparaging and inimical opinions against Reliance Jio”. The statement of COAI, “warrants criminal and civil action for defamation”, Jio said, demanding a public apology from COAI and its Director General Rajan Mathews within 48 hours.

as a justification, Choksi said that he will not be able to reimburse the salaries of his employees. “It is very tough for me, as of now, to be clearing your dues or to pay the future salaries, in view of the seizing of the various bank accounts and other properties by the government agencies/ investigating agencies,” Choksi said.

which will be good enough for them to keep possession of the prestigious ICC Test Championship mace for the second year in succession. Kohli had become the 10th captain since 2002 to get his hands on the mace when he had received it from Sunil Gavaskar following the Indore Test against New Zealand in 2016. Had South Africa pulled off a 3-0 series win against India, then a win by 2-0 or better against Australia would have helped them reclaim the mace they had last won in 2015. Now, South Africa will have to win at least one

Test against Australia to retain second place in the Test table, which, in turn, will earn them $500,000. In this scenario, Australia will pocket $200,000 for a third place finish. However, if Australia win by 3-0 or 4-0, then they will leapfrog South Africa into second place. The winner of the two-Test New Zealand versus England series, which will also be played in March, will decide the side that finishes fourth on the table and will take home $100,000. A drawn series will mean New Zealand will finish ahead of England.

Bongpyeong: Don’t ask Ester Ledecka if she is the best athlete at the PyeongChang Olympics. She’ll stare through her polarized goggles and recoil at what she considers a preposterous notion. “Uh, what?” she responded Saturday afternoon. No, seriously. “I don’t think so, no,” she insisted. “There are the greatest athletes in the world here.” And the greatest athletes in the world now gush over Ledecka, the 22-year-old Czech who just accomplished the unthinkable, winning gold medals in two different sporting disciplines, shattering all preconceived notions about the impossibility of mixing elite skiing and snowboarding — or any other exotic combination of world-class athletic pursuits. She must be the greatest. “Yeah, whatever,” Ledecka said. And then she walked away. It was something I’ve never seen before: a humble mic drop. It seems that Ledecka

breaks new ground in everything she does. Let’s say it for her: Ledecka is the greatest of all the greatests here. She is the defining figure of the 2018 Games. She just made parallel giant slalom snowboarding a mustsee event. On Saturday at Phoenix Snow Park, she beat Selina Joerg of Germany by 0.46 seconds to capture a historic gold double. Last week, she shocked the world and won the super-G on skis, and now her snowboard is golden, too. She has dreamed about this since she was 5. Her lifelong aspiration

wasn’t simply to go to the Olympics. It was to do it her way — to compete in multiple sports, to win multiple golds — and the more she heard people say she couldn’t do it, the worse a listener she became. In an era of sports specialization, Ledecka has been an evangelist for maintaining variety and a persistent self-believer. She didn’t want to hear about what was impossible. She just needed to know how difficult it would be, and then she could figure out the training and discipline the task required.

Jose Mourinho has predicted an “amazing” period for Manchester United as he prepares to host a series of significant fixtures at Old Trafford across three different competitions. United host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday to kick off a run of four home games in their next five matches. Mourinho’s side start next month with a league trip to Crystal Palace before welcoming top-four rivals Liverpool. A Champions League last-16, second-leg fixture against Sevilla and a home FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton & Hove Albion wrap up the busy period, and Mourinho remains confident ahead of United’s decisive spell in the campaign. “I think the next few weeks at Old Trafford will be amazing,” he said. ”Two big matches against two direct rivals in the Premier League,

two knockout matches that, if things go well, can leave us in the quarter-final of the Champions League and the semi-final of the FA Cup. “Sometimes we have periods with three, four consecutive away matches but this time we have four matches at home, with Crystal Palace away in between, but four big matches at Old Trafford.” United’s schedule contains

13 fixtures, including 11 league matches, but that total could potentially rise to 20 depending on their progress in the cup competitions. “March, April and May can be really busy and going far in the FA Cup creates you problems,” Mourinho added. “We now play Brighton when we were supposed to play West Ham and we don’t know when we’ll play West Ham.”

New Delhi: Mayank Agarwal kept his dream run going with the bat as he notched up his third fifty of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, thereby piloting his Karnataka side into the final of the tournament, on Saturday (February 24). Chasing a low score of 161, Agarwal along with fellow opener Ravikumar Samarth put on a stand of 155 in quick time to quash any hopes that Maharashtra would’ve had of defending their score. Agarwal fell on

81 when his side needed just six more runs to win. Earlier on, after opting to bat first, Maharashtra were in a good position at 95 for 2. But opener Shrikant Mundhe’s wicket triggered a collapse which saw them losing their last eight wickets for 65 runs. Mundhe who had just got to his fifty threw his wicket away by holing out to deep cover and the runout of Ankit Bawne created panic in the Maharashtra ranks, a position from which they could never recover.

CBI books Delhi-based jeweller for duping Rs 390 crore from Oriental Bank of Commerce

New Delhi: Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) is the latest public sector lender to join the list of state-run banks which have been defrauded by diamond merchants. Using the same modus operandi like the one used by celebrity jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi to get Letter of Credit (LoC) from PNB, the accused involved in the OBC fraud availed credit facilities to the tune of Rs 389.85 crore with the help of some bank officials. The CBI has booked Delhi-based diamond jewellery exporter Dwarka Das Seth International Pvt Ltd, six months after the Oriental Bank of Commerce filed a complaint with the agency. CBI has also booked Sabhya Seth, Reeta Seth, Krishna Kumar Singh, Ravi Singh - all directors of the firm - and another company named Dwarka Das Seth SEZ Incorporation for the alleged fraud. The whereabouts of Sabhya, the prime suspect, and other directors is not known for now. The CBI charged the company and other directors

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) will present the ICC Test Championship Mace to India captain Virat Kohli at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town at the conclusion of the South Africa tour. “On behalf of the ICC, Cricket Hall of Famers Sunil Gavaskar of India and Graeme Pollock of South Africa will make the presentation immediately after the awards ceremony for the T20I series”, the ICC wrote in statement. India have ensured the number one spot on the ICC Test Team Rankings and a prize of $ 1 million after their victory in the Johannesburg Test against South Africa last month, which ensures that no team can move ahead of them in the Test rankings at the 3 April cut-off date. India had arrived in South Africa on 124 points, with South Africa 13 points behind on 111 points. However, Virat Kohli’s men will return on 121 points as opposed to South Africa’s 115 points,

of two firms with cheating OBC in connivance with bank officials and dubious financial instruments. This is similar to the modus operandi of absconding diamantaire Nirav Modi who defrauded Punjab National Bank (PNB) of Rs 11,400 crore. The accused have availed several credit facilities from the Greater Kailash-II branch of OBC since 2007 by getting Foreign Letters of Credit (FLC), foreign documentary bill purchase and other instruments, said Agency. The bank found that the company was using Letters of

Credit (LoCs) to pay off other creditors against the purchase of gold and other precious stone and transfer gold and funds outside the country using fictitious transactions, the FIR said. The various credit facilities company had availed from OBC between 2007 and 2012 swelled to Rs 389 crore during the period. The jewellery export firm was also engaging in business transactions with non-existent entities, it said. After the Rs PNB scam and Rotomac loan default, this is the third biggest corporate scam coming to light in a span of two weeks.

Three prematurely-born babies beat survival odds in city hospitals

Ahmedabad: A 20-day-old baby from Dhandhuka -- premature by five weeks and weighing just 1.7 kg -- was operated upon for Hirschsprung’s disease last week. The baby, which could not pass stool as a segment of its large intestine was spastic, was operated by laparoscopy and discharged on Friday evening. This condition is diagnosed in 1 out of 1,000 patients. Although laparoscopy on neonatal patients is not that rare, doctors who operated on the child said the weight of the patient was a major factor as normal weight of infants is expected to be 3.5 kg. However, Moin weighs just half of that. Dr Anirudh Shah said, “If a baby is able to pass stool, though with difficulty, we wait. However, this child was in the ‘failure to thrive’ category, meaning it was not gaining weight and not passing stool at all and was getting worse. Hence we decided to perform the surgery immediately.” The doctor added, “There is a perception in the medical community that laparoscopic surgery is not possible in neonates and that children should be of a certain weight for them to be eligible to undergo laparoscopic surgery. However, with experience, quality equipment and precision, laparoscopy is completely safe even on small babies.” Had a complication occurred, the doctors would have “converted it into abypass surgery”. Born at 32 weeks instead of 40, Shahid had not passed stool since he was born. Enema as well as other medication was not having any effect on his condition.

More victims of Fisheries scam: Gujarat HC reserves mehul choksi’s gold order on minister’s petition scheme fraud surface — The case dates back to 2008 when Parshottam Solanki had awarded 58 contracts.

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Friday concluded the hearing on petitions moved by MoS Fisheries Parshottam Solanki seeking quashing of the case filed against him in the alleged fisheries scam. Former minister Dileep Sanghani, against whom a Gandhinagar court had issued the process, has also moved the court for quashing of the process and the prosecution case. Issuing process by a court means the particular case is “triable” and it has taken cognizance of the case. The case has been in the cold for nearly three years, following the issuance of the process against the two senior BJP leaders by a Gandhinagar

Ahmedabad tops list of number of schools in gujarat without playgrounds Ahmedabad: Despite Gujarat government’s ambitious annual Khel Mahakumbh programme and coining of ‘Ramshe Gujarat’ slogan to promote sports, the ground reality is grim when it comes to providing the most basic sports facility to school students — that of a ground. During the question hour, the education minister informed the House that hundreds of schools across various districts lack playgrounds. Going by the information given out, Ahmedabad seems to top the State when it comes to number of schools without grounds. The districts with maximum number of such schools are: Ahmedabad (983), Banaskantha (681), Panchmahal (640) and Rajkot (540). If you thought that only the government schools suffer

from this condition, then you are mistaken. In fact, there are more private schools in Ahmedabad than government ones that have no playgrounds. In Ahmedabad district, 676 private and 68 government primary schools are without a ground. For secondary schools, the figure stands at 235 and 4 respectively. In the last two years, though, government helped arrange ground for 41private and 37 government schools in the State. In Banaskantha, 658 government and 23 private primary schools are without a ground. In the Panchamahals, the

number of such schools is 565 (government) and 37 (private) primary schools, and 18 secondary schools. In Rajkot district, from where the Chief Minister comes from, 540 schools lack ground. In Rajkot city, 109 government and 341 private primary schools suffer from this condition while this figure is 15 and 75 respectively in case of secondary schools. Surat has 240 such schools and Vadodara 298. When asked to comment, Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma told Mirror: “For us, education is more important. So we cannot stop the permission from being granted to aschool for lack of ground. We have given permission to many schools which don’t have own ground but have rented one from government or private parties.”

magisterial court. The lower court, while issuing the summons, found that there was enough material against the accused to try them in the court. Against this, the accused moved the Gujarat High Court which stayed the proceedings of the lower court. The Gandhinagar court’s order had come on the basis of an inquiry report prepared by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The report found that the BJP leaders could be booked under the Prevention of Corruption

with the Gujarat Police on February 18 where he was allegedly detained on his way to hold a bandh, the Dalit activist and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani has now raised serious concerns over his safety in the state. Mevani has raised an alarm after a WhatsApp group run by the Ahmedabad Rural Police and journalists had a post by the Ahmedabad Rural DYSP, in which a politician was seen roughed up by the cops. The DYSP in his post said that a similar treatment will be meted out to Mevani who had insulted the police. Mevani shared the conversation on his Twitter account saying that the two top cops were discussing how he could be killed in an encounter. Following the DYSP’s post, a similar post was shared by DSP Raju Asari in the group. Asari’s post was on the Uttar Pradesh chief

minister Yogi Adityanath’s interview where he justified the elimination of criminals. Both the posts were given thumbs up by the other members of the group. Both the top police officials in their string of conversations threatened the Vadgam MLA. After the chat went viral, Mevani vowed to file a complaint with the

DGP, the home minister and the home secretary. On February 18, Mevani, who was on his way to organise a bandh following the death of Dalit activist Bhanu Vankar, was stopped by the police. Mevani soon got into a heated argument with the police. A video of the incident went viral soon after.
