These decisions need to be made at the highest levels in both governments with a clear timeline against which progress will be measured,” said Keith Webster, who represented the Pentagon in the Defense Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI) in the Obama administration. For taking the India-US defence relationship to the next level, Webster said a serious look must be given to a project or two under the DTTI.

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the Delhi High Court verdict acquitting JMM supremo and former Union minister Shibu Soren in connection with the murder of his private secretary Shashi Nath Jha in 1994, saying there was no merit in the appeal. A bench of justices A K Goel and R F Nariman refused to interfere with the August 22, 2007, verdict of the high court which had set aside the trial court judgement holding Soren guilty in the case. Advocate Sanjeev Kumar, appearing for Soren, argued before the bench that there was no evidence to show that the body exhumed from a farmhouse on the outskirts of Ranchi was that of Jha or Soren had any motive to have the victim eliminated.

Kushinagar accident: Stop this nautanki, CM Yogi Adityanath tells protesters

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath faced protest by people when he went to Kushinagar, where 13 children were killed in a train-school van collision on Thursday. An angry Adityanath asked protesters to stop the drama. “Narebaazi band karo, nautanki band karo (stop raising slogans, stop this drama), I have come here to express my sympathies,” Adityanath told protesters who were agitated by the death of the

school children, reported news agancy. The angry protesters even prevented the chief minister from visiting the accident site. As Adityanath reached the accident spot after visiting the district hospital, an angry crowd raised slogans against railway and local authorities. They demanded that railway personnel should be posted at the unmanned crossing to avoid such accidents. The Chief Minister said strict action would

be taken against those found guilty while adding that the driver of the van, prima facie, appears to have caused the accident as he was wearing earphones at the time. He also raised questions over the age of the driver. “I spoke to the Rail Minister this morning. Prima facie, it appears to be the fault of the van driver. He was driving with his earphones. Even things have come forward regarding his age,” Adityanath said.

Asked about the government's efforts to nab fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, Singh said the Centre had recently brought an ordinance to seize all the properties of such "fugitive economic offenders".

Dignity of constitutional bodies must be maintained, says Rajnath Singh Gandhinagar : All political parties must ensure that the dignity and honour of the constitutional institutions like the courts do not get diminished under any circumstances, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said at Gandhinagar on Thursday. Singh, who was at Gandhinagar to chair the 23rd meeting of the Western Zonal Council, comprising Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, told this to reporters after the meeting, in response to a query on the SC collegium. His comments came hours after the Centre asked the Supreme Court collegium to reconsider its proposal to appoint Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice K M Joseph to the top court, saying the elevation might

not be “appropriate”. “It is the responsibility of every political party as well as other institutions to make sure that the dignity and honour of any constitutional institution do not get diminished under any circumstances,” Singh said, while replying to a query on the Centre’s decision of not approving Joseph’s name as an apex court judge. “All of us, be it the ruling party or the opposition parties or any government or nongovernment organisation, must try to ensure that the people’s trust in the

constitutional institutions remains intact. This is necessary for a healthy democracy,” he said. Asked to specifically comment on Joseph, the home minister said, “I should not comment on the judiciary.” Asked about certain reports that the Kathua gangrape incident had caused a communal rift among the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said the government would not tolerate any such attempt to “spread hatred on communal lines and the perpetrators will be dealt with in the strictest manner”.

Thirteen children were killed and eight others injured when a train rammed into their school van at an unmanned railway crossing in Kushinagar, around 50 km from Gorakhpur. The children, students of Divine Public School, were killed on the spot when the Thawe-Kapatanganj passenger train crashed into the van at the unmanned crossing gate at Behpurva, said Railways spokesman Ved Prakash.

Modi-Xi summit will be new landmark in ties, says Chinese daily Wuhan The two-day informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping starting on Friday at Wuhan could be a “new landmark” in bilateral ties and can help reduce differences, a write-up in the state-run Chinese media said on Thursday. Xi and Modi are expected to exchange views on issues of strategic, long-term and overall importance at their informal meeting in Wuhan, an article in the China Daily said. “The meeting will be a new landmark in China-India relations, infusing fresh vigour into bilateral ties and ushering in a new phase of cooperation,” it said. Amidst US President Donald Trump’s protectionist trade moves, the two of the biggest emerging market economies, China and India encounter hurdles not only on the path to their respective development, but also for the rejuvenation of Asia, a common goal of the two sides, it said.

Without taking any names, Congress president Rahul Gandhi alleged that the BJP had given tickets to eight candidates, who were accused of corruption, for the May 12 Karnataka Assembly polls.

Rahul hits back at PM Modi over corruption charges against Karnataka government

New Delhi : Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for levelling corruption allegations against the Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday claimed that the BJP had given tickets to eight tainted candidates for the upcoming state Assembly election. Gandhi, back in Karnataka for the seventh leg of his poll campaign, questioned the prime minister’s authority to speak on corruption while being surrounded by BJP leaders accused of financial wrongdoing. “Modiji comes here and speaks about

corruption. When (fugitive diamantaire) Nirav Modi, whom Narendra Modi knows very well…knows by the first name, runs away with Rs 30,000 crore, he does not utter a word. “When he (Modi) stands on a stage, on his one side is Yeddyurappa, who has spent time in jail, on the other side there are four others, who have been to jail, and Modiji speaks about corruption,” he told a gathering during a road-show. Modi has often targeted the Siddaramaiah-led Congress regime in Karnataka over alleged corruption, calling it a “10 per cent commission government”.

Nitin Gadkari asks automakers to bring in safer designs to curb road accidents KK Kapila, Chairman IRF, was of the view that strict enforcement with appropriate penalties, accompanied by public awareness of laws will be a critical factor in reducing road traffic injuries and deaths. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday asked automakers to work towards having safer designs and explore possibility of use of silicon in tyres as part of efforts to reduce road accidents. India Inc should encourage its members to adopt safe driving practices, the minister said. Gadkari also called for concerted efforts to minimise accidents on the pattern of South Korea, which has successfully reduced the number of accidents to 213 from 13,000 (annually) five years back. “Automobile makers should come forward in the initiative for reducing road crashes. There should be research and innovation,” he said. “They can also explore the possibility of using silicon, if feasible, in tyres to minimise incidents like tyre bursts on highways like Yamuna Expressway due to increase in temperature,” Gadkari said addressing an event on road safety. The road minister said vehicles should be designed

in a way to prevent accidents, and truck bodies should have adequate safety features. He was addressing ‘Conclave with Corporates on Road Safety’ organised by his ministry in partnership with International Road Federation,(IRF) Ficci, CII, Siam and Assocham. “Indian Corporate sector should encourage its members to adopt safe driving practices to minimise road accidents,” he said. He urged India Inc to teach their employees and their families to imbibe a culture on

road safety and use their logistics and carriers to propagate the message of road safety. The minister enumerated the myriad steps taken by the government to reduce road fatalities. Health Minister JP Nadda said there is an urgent need for behaviourial and cultural change to imbibe a culture on road safety. Ministry of health has already trained one lakh people to provide first aid to accident victims and intends to train 10 lakh more by next couple of years, he said.

Can Modi learn from Macron?

F rench President Emmanuel Macron exhibited finest diplomatic stagecraft, by toasting his warm friendship with Donald Trump and then rebuking him in the same breath for whatever he thought was wrong with the American President's policies. And the best part of it was that the reprimand was couched in such politeness that it would have hit Trump where it hurt him most and yet the pain must have come as an afterthought. During a three-day visit of the French President, the two leaders repeatedly shook and grabbed each other's hands, and exchanged kisses on the check, demonstrating the special warmth in Macron's relations with Trump, the kind that does not exist between the American President and any other European leader. But that was no bar on Macron taking on the isolationist principles being followed by Trump in America's relations with the rest of the world. The sting delighted the Democrats who, throughout his speech to the joint meeting of the Congress, cheered the French President as he enumerated the wrongs in Trump's policies one by one. Macron, who credited the United States with inventing multilateralism, used his praise to emphasise the need to 'reinvent' the concept to correct the deviations that have occurred due to Trump's policies. He said that the US and France had a "unique taste for freedom" and were therefore obligated to join together to fight extremism, racism, inequality and environmental degradation across the globe, echoing his disappointment with President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. On the Iran nuclear agreement, another issue on which Macron has strong views, he expressed the fear that Trump might do a walkout as he had threatened during the presidential campaign. PM Modi could perhaps take a few lessons from Macron on how to deal with an impetuous leader like Trump. Just as Micron enjoys a special relationship with Trump, Modi and Trump have repeatedly expressed mutual admiration. But when Modi is in the company of the US President, the personal warmth has often held him back from expressing India's concerns. With the result that Modi often comes away from such meetings, with people getting the impression that India ended up losing despite the great bonhomie. Trump has almost made it a habit to harp on his 'America first' policy imperatives and their implications for India even before Modi lands on the Indian soil. The takeaway from Macron's boisterous US visit is that the French President made a finest exposition of how friendship between two leaders must not come in the way of true state craft being pursued. Macron's three-day US trip is, therefore, a milestone.

Real Madrid proud to suffer after smash and grab win in Bayern Munich

Real Madrid are used to making other teams suffer but they withstood waves of pressure from Bayern Munich to win their Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday 2-1. Hyderabad : Real Madrid are used to making other teams suffer but they withstood waves of pressure from Bayern Munich to win their Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday 2-1 and take a confident step towards reaching the final for a third year in a row. At the Allianz Arena, Zinedine Zidane’s side had only 39.7 percent possession – their second lowest after the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in December – while Bayern had 17 shots on goal to Madrid’s seven. But in contrast to Bayern’s profligacy, the 12-times European champions made their few attempts count, hitting the target four times and scoring twice. “We suffered a lot but the result is important,” said Real coach Zidane. “You have to suffer, you cannot play in the Champions League and not suffer. But we are happy because we

knew how to suffer without the ball.” Bayern defender Joshua Kimmich gave the home side the lead with the help of unconvincing goalkeeping from Madrid’s Keylor Navas and Franck Ribery missed a chance to double the lead before Marcelo equalised just before halftime. Substitute Marco Asensio pulled Madrid in front early in the second half by starting and finishing a sweeping counterattack. “The game had the circumstances that we went behind and unconsciously we sat back a bit and suffered a little and they obviously wanted to go all out and try to win the game,” Real captain Sergio Ramos said. “We took advantage of that, we got the equaliser, we defended very well and then we killed them on a counterattack. We need to remember nights like this and learn because that’s what makes this team great.” Spanish newspaper AS called the result “a victory through suffering” and said Madrid “survived Bayern’s siege”.

IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy was no issue, Delhi Daredevils batsmen failed, says Sanjay Manjrekar Hyderabad : Gautam Gambhir had to step down from the helm after the failure of Delhi Daredevils’ batting unit in this Indian Premier League season, but his leadership was not an issue, feels former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar. Daredevils, yet to win an IPL crown, are in the last spot in the points table after losing five of the six games they figured in, their sole win coming against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Delhi.

“I don’t think Gambhir’s leadership was a problem, it was just about the batsmen not getting runs, notable failure like (Glenn) Maxwell hurting them. Gambhir, the batsman, thereby had to get runs because the others were failing around him. Gambhir was picked more for his captaincy than his batting, but because the batting group was not clicking, Gambhir the batsman came under scrutiny,” Manjrekar told news agancy.

Disappointed over US plans to tighten visa norms: Suresh Prabhu

Total bilateral trade in services in 2017 was USD 51.8 billion, an increase of 11 per cent from the previous year.

Need for serious negotiations on USIndia free trade agreement: experts Washington: Observing that India-US economic ties have not matched the soaring rhetoric of strategic pronouncements, eminent American experts have pushed for trade negotiation that is broad enough to encompass fundamentals of bilateral economic engagement. The way forward is to begin now on serious negotiations for a US-India free trade agreement, said Raymond E Vickery, former US Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Trade Development. "As we look toward the future of our trade relationship and how it might be enhanced, the FTA

is the end game and we all know it is an aspirational goal,” said Susan Ritchie, a former State Department official who managed digital economy policy issues including Internet, data flows, privacy, e-commerce, trade and telecommunications. Vickery and Ritchie, who are now in private sector, pushed for India-US free trade agreement during a panel discussion on 'Economic and Immigration issues facing the US India partnership' organised by the US India Friendship Council at the US Capitol. Noting that the list of differences between the two countries have increased in

recent years, Vickery said the only way that these myriad trade conflicts can be solved and freer economic engagement again become the engine that pushes the relationship forward is to have a trade negotiation that is broad enough to encompass the fundamentals of economic engagement between India and the US. "The resulting understanding can be called a 'free trade agreement', a 'trade and investment framework', 'trade promotion agreement', or one of the other euphemisms used to describe a freer movement of goods and services between the US and India.

New Delhi: Expressing disappointment over the US plans to prohibit spouses of H1-B visa holders to work in America, India today hoped that the Trump administration would take "corrective actions" on the issue. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations which require theoretical or technical expertise. The technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China. "The US decision to put certain restrictions on visas is quite disappointing and we hope that the US will take corrective

actions," Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu said here at an event organised by American Chamber of Commerce in India. The Trump administration is planning to end allowing spouses of H1-B visa holders to work legally in the US, a top federal agency official has told lawmakers. The move could severely impact thousands of Indians professionals working in America. Prabhu said India has already communicated its concerns to the US and "we would like to have the reality put into perspective that Indian companies in the US are contributing significantly in the growth of the US economy".

Currency in circulation has risen by 33 per cent year-onyear to Rs 18.9 lakh crore as of April 20.

Currency hoarding on despite govt, RBI assurance New Delhi: Despite the government’s advice against hoarding money, people continue to stockpile cash and have pulled out Rs 16,340 crore from banks bringing the total for the first three weeks of the month to Rs 59,520 crore, according to data released by RBI on Wednesday. In the previous three weeks, withdrawals were Rs 16,470 crore. Currency withdrawals in the January-March quarter were at Rs 1.4 lakh crore, about 27 per cent more than in the same quarter of 2016. The currency in circulation has risen by 33 per cent year-on-year to Rs 18.9 lakh crore as of April 20, higher than the predemonetisation level. But as a percentage of GDP, it remains lower prompting

economists to suggest that circulation should be ramped up. On November 8, 2016, currency notes of denominations of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500, valued at Rs 15.4 lakh crore and accounting 86.9 per cent of the value of total notes in circulation, were demonetised. This month, an unusual spurt in demand for currency led to many ATMs and banks running

out of cash in UP, MP, pollbound Karnataka and some other states even as the government and the RBI assured that there was no currency shortage. RBI last week had said there was no shortage of currency even as it has ramped up printing of notes at all its four presses. The finance ministry too had said printing of Rs 500 notes was being increased five-fold.

Ahmedabad : The state government’s decision to introduce Gujarati as a mandatory subject in all boards from Class I from this academic session has irked private schools affiliated to different boards, including Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE). The schools, which are still waiting to see the implementation of Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Act, 2017 — which fixed an upper ceiling on the annual fee charged by primary, secondary and higher secondary schools — alleged that the state education department did not consult them and take all “stakeholders” into confidence. “This is like dictatorship. There is no clarity and planning on the part of the government. The stakeholders

were not taken into confidence through any dialogue or meeting. All this affects the quality of education in the long run,” said Manan Chowksi, executive director of Udgam School for Children and Zebar

Asaram verdict: Disquiet in his ashrams, talk of conspiracy

Ahmedabad : Outside the giant iron gate of “Sant Asaram Ashram” in Ahmedabad’s Motera area, decorated with figures of Hindu gods, nearly 50 police personnel stood guard on Wednesday, to nip in the bud any violent protests following the conviction of 77-year-old self-styled godman in a rape case. There was mild tension in the air.But unlike July 2008, when clashes broke out in the area after two boys studying in the ashram’s gurukul were found drowned in nearby Sabarmati river, there was an air of disquiet inside the ashram on Wednesday. In the morning, before the court announced the verdict, Asaram’s followers

reportedly held special prayers and performed havan in the ashram, praying for the acquittal of their “guru”, who is facing trial in another rape case in Gujarat. But soon after learnt that Asaram had been convicted of raping a teenage girl and sentenced to life in prison, the devotees started leaving the ashram. Some cried. There was no unrest. The ashram authorities issued a release, urging devotees to maintain order. “We have faith in the judiciary and everyone has to assist in the judicial process in a peaceful manner… those who create chaos cannot be my devotee,” a release issued by the ashram quoted Asaram as saying.

use of renewable energy. The use of renewables will lower the facility’s carbon footprint by approximately 1,400 tons of carbon dioxide per year. Microgrids with integrated battery energy storage offer industrial and business establishments a viable solution to mitigate planned and unplanned power outages that negatively affect their operations. When connected to renewable energy sources they also provide clean energy, often replacing fossil fuels. Furthermore, they provide more control to the business on how and when to deploy the stored power. A key benefit is the reduction in overall operational costs and reduced spend on electricity bills. With India expected to become the world’s third largest economy by 2030, and with its rapid adoption of the latest digital technology, the country is looking for smart and sustainable technology solutions to meet its growing

South Korea to hit pause on Friday to soak in historic summit

Seoul : With a giant TV screen in its capital, and a break from classes for students to watch live coverage, much of South Korea will hit the pause button on Friday to watch history unfold – the first time a North Korean leader crosses the border to visit. South Korean President Moon Jae-in will welcome Kim Jong Un as he walks across the military demarcation line between the neighbours, still technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. “It is an important moment of our history and a very good chance to feel the history,” said Park Sung-il, vice principal at Baekun Elementary School in the southern city of Gwangju, which is letting students watch events unfold on television. “Our kids can get live education about unification by watching South and North Korean leaders

shake hands in real time.” It is only the third time the leaders of the countries have met, and previous summits in Pyongyang, the North’s capital, were not broadcast live. “There is the sense of excitement in Seoul that almost everybody is preparing for celebration on Friday,” said Victor Cha, a US expert on Korea who was visiting Seoul this week. If the summit goes well, “perhaps people in Washington may be more optimistic” that Kim’s meeting with US President Donald Trump, expected in May or June, will go well, he added. The leaders of the two sides will meet at the South Korean border village of Panmunjom, the only place along the heavily fortified border where soldiers face off directly against each other. In Seoul, a gigantic TV screen will broadcast footage outside city hall.

Man who tried to get Donald Trump’s tax information awaits sentence Gandhinagar : As Gujarat stares at water scarcity after a significant dip in the supply from Narmada dam this year, the state government has registered at least eight FIRs against farmers in different police stations of Saurashtra for pilfering water. All these FIRs have been registered in April itself. Seven of these FIRs were registered for alleged pilferage of water from the bulk pipeline of Gujarat Water Infrastructure Limited (GWIL), a Gujarat government undertaking. The pipeline carries Narmada water for drinking purpose to Saurashtra and

ABB commissions India’s first industrial solar microgrid Ahmedabad : ABB today inaugurated an innovative microgrid solution at its Vadodora manufacturing facility in Gujarat, India. This is the company’s largest facility in India, with over 3,000 employees and among ABB’s biggest manufacturing hubs in the world. The microgrid is the first of its kind to be installed at a manufacturing campus in India, and will harness the area’s abundant solar energy supply to help the expanding factory meet its growing electricity needs, while lowering its carbon footprint. The microgrid’s rooftop photovoltaic field and its innovative batteryenergy storage system will support the factory’s productivity and enable green power supplies in the evening hours or during cloudy periods during the day. A sophisticated ABB AbilityTM control and automation system, serves as the brain of the microgrid, ensuring the maximizing the

the students of Class I and II are already studying English and Hindi, teaching them a third language will add more burden on them. As a communicative language, students should know Gujarati but as literature, it should be made optional,” said Sujata Tandon, principal of Udgam School for Children. Private schools question the feasibility and utility of this decision. “There are students in our school from other states who do not even know Hindi. So, in addition to Hindi, now we have to teach them another language — Gujarati. What use is this language to those who know that they would be transferred in a year or two?” said Monica Ahluwalia, principal of Army Public School at Shahibaug. “While a few parents are happy about the decision, many are worried.

Kutch. Top government sources said that the move was conceived as deterrence against pilfering of drinking water for irrigation. Seven FIRs have been registered in Bhavnagar, Surendranagar and Jamnagar districts, government sources said. Bhavnagar district has registered six FIRs. In Surendranagar, one FIR has been registered by the officials of GWIL. In Bhavnagar, the FIRs have been registered for pilfering water in Maglana, Usrad, Dhandhali, Chamardi, Nesda and Vartej villages. In Surendranagar, GWIL had detected alleged water

pilferage from Morthala village. Notably, sources said, the number of FIRs registered by the state government will be even higher as some more FIRs have been registered by the officials of Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) for water pilferage from its drinking water supply lines. The Indian Express had, on April 16, reported one such FIR registered by the GWSSB officials against 18 farmers in Jamjodhpur police station of Jamnagar district on April 14. “All these are FIRs and not simple police complaints.

Baton Rouge : A Louisiana private investigator faces a possible prison sentence for misusing Donald Trump’s Social Security number in repeated attempts to access the president’s federal tax information before his 2016 election. US District Judge John deGravelles is scheduled to sentence 32-yearold Jordan Hamlett on Wednesday. Hamlett faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine after pleading

guilty in December. Authorities have said Hamlett failed in his attempts to get Trump’s tax information through a US Department of Education financial aid website. Federal agents confronted Hamlett two weeks before the November 2016 presidential election and questioned him in a Baton Rouge hotel lobby. Trump has refused to release his tax returns, bucking an American tradition honored by every president since Jimmy Carter.

Beijing : Research by Chinese geologists shows the mountain above North Korea’s main nuclear test site has collapsed, rendering it unsafe for further testing and requiring that it be monitored for any leaking radiation. The findings by the scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China may shed new light on North Korean President Kim Jong Un’s announcement that his country was ceasing its testing program ahead of planned summit meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and US President Donald Trump. Nuclear explosions release enormous amounts of heat and energy, and the North’s largest test in September was believed early on to have rendered the site in northeastern North Korea

unstable. Chinese authorities have said they’ve detected no radiation risk from samples collected along the border. Calls to those departments were not immediately answered today. The data in the latest Chinese study was collected following the most powerful of the North’s six nuclear device tests on Sept. 3 that is believed to have triggered four earthquakes over the following weeks. The yield of the bomb was estimated at more than 100 kilotons of TNT, at least 10 times stronger than anything the North had tested previously. (The bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 had a yield of about 15 kilotons.) The University of Science and Technology of China paper, authored by

Tian Dongdong, Yao Jiawen and Wen Lianxing, said the first of those earthquakes that occurred eight-anda-half minutes after the explosion was “an onsite collapse toward the nuclear test center,” while those that followed were an “earthquake swarm” in similar locations. “In view of the research finding that the North Korea nuclear test site at Mantapsan has collapsed, it is necessary to continue to monitor any leakage of radioactive materials that may have been caused by the collapse,” the authors said in a summary dated Monday and viewed Wednesday on the university’s website. The study is peer-reviewed and has been accepted for publication by the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
