New Delhi: The court, on Monday, asked the Delhi police to prove that tampering was done with the CCTV footage recovered by them from the official residence of Chief Minister Arvin Kejriwal in the Chief Secretary assualt case. The police had earlier said that the timestamp on the clip did not match with

The militants waiting across the LoC were in groups of 30-40 at many places from Lepa valley to Mandal area, near 161 brigade, Rampur, and other areas, he said. Additional DCP Harendra Singh told the court that the meeting between the Delhi Chief Secretary and the Aam

Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs was not held in the camp office but in the living room of the CM residence. Meanwhile, the Delhi government is mulling live streaming of all official meetings following the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash at the Chief Minister’s residence on February 19.

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has warned schools against withholding admit cards of class 10 and 12 students on any pretext, including poor performance in pre-board examinations. The warning comes following several complaints received by the CBSE about withholding admit cards by certain schools and in some cases charging a fee for their release. “Several instances of not issuing admit cards by various CBSE-affiliated schools on grounds of performance of students in pre-board tests have come to the notice of the board. It has also been noted that some schools are charging fees for release of the admit card,” CBSE controller of examination KK Chaudhary said in an advisory.

Mentioning the Rule 15 of Examination Bye-Laws, the CBSE said, “In no case the heads of affiliated schools shall detain eligible candidates from appearing at the examination. The practice has been viewed very seriously by the board and is violative of the byelaws.” The advisory also stated that the board issues admit cards to only those students which have been sponsored by the schools in their final list of candidates submitted to it. “Therefore, their eligibility for the exams has already been confirmed by the school and hence their admit cards cannot be withheld. The schools also cannot charge any fee for issuing admit cards,” it said. The CBSE board exams for Class 10 and 12 students are set to begin from March 5.

Delhi chief secretary assault case: Govt mulling live streaming of official meetings

New Delhi : In the wake of Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash’s allegations of assault at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence last week, the Delhi government has proposed live streaming of the meetings of officers with ministers, officials said on Monday. Prakash was allegedly assaulted by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs and others during a meeting at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s

The government is likely to allocate funds for the project in the upcoming budget if the plan is cleared, the official said. “By live streaming the official meetings, people will be able to know who spoke what in the meeting, be it the elected representative or

officials,” the official said. The proposal is being floated by the Delhi government in a bid to reduce its ongoing tension with officers who have been boycotting the meetings ever since the alleged assault took place. “The plan is to put all the file movement and notings online for people to see who is working on a file and for how long, who cleared it and who wrote what on a particular file,” the officer said.

BJP would solve Mahadayi row if voted to power: Amit Shah

New Delhi: BJP President Amit Shah Monday said the party would solve the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute with neighbouring Goa if it is voted to power in the upcoming assembly polls. “I assure the people of the state that if BJP is voted to power, it will solve the Mahadayi river water dispute between Karnataka and Goa,” he told reporters here. Shah blamed the Siddaramaiah government for the delay in finding a solution and added that it would have been settled if the chief minister had cooperated with the central govermment. “The issue would have been solved if Siddaramaiah had cooperated with us earlier. There are some people, even now, trying to create obstacles. Hence there has been a delay,” he said. whether Eshwarappa will get the ticket or not? Eshwarappaji is the most respected leader our party. Taking care of interests of party leaders is my job. The central parliamentary party will announce the list of candidates,” he said. Eshwarappa and state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa were at loggerheads before the central leadership stepped in to end it. Eshwarappa has recently expressed apprehensions about attempts to deny him the ticket to contest the polls.

Replying to another query, Shah said the party would certainly field a Dalit chief ministerial candidate if somebody of that stature comes up in future. “Even an ordinary party worker in BJP can become chief minister. Even a Dalit can be a chief minister if the party comes to notice such a dalit chief ministerial candidate,” he said. On Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde’s statement on changing the Constitition, Shah said, “It is a dead issue. Hegde has already apologised.”

India and Brazil’s role in the bioeconomy

New Delhi will host the International Conference on Sustainable Biofuels 2018 (ICSB 2018), an event aimed at debating strategies for the large-scale, worldwide adoption of clean fuels as an alternative to carbon-intensive sources such as petrol or diesel. The conference is co-organized by the BioFuture Platform (BP) and Mission Innovation (MI), two coalitions of countries devoted to the advancement of renewable energy. While the BP focuses on scaling up the deployment of low-emission fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel, MI promotes the development of innovative technology in various modalities of renewable energy sources. At the intersection of both efforts, ICSB 2018 will house important debates around state-of-the-art research and development in the biofuels domain, including second- generation ethanol (E2G), bio-hydrogen and algae-based biodiesel. Under discussion is not whether biofuels should be part of our future; it is how it will be adopted in our economy and daily lives. On this subject, Brazil and India (members of BP and MI) have a lot to say. Both countries are large emerging economies that have to pursue the goal of inclusive growth under environment-friendly development standards—a novel challenge developed countries never had to face. Precisely because of this, the two countries have been at the forefront of technological development in the biofuels sector by providing economically viable, low-carbon solutions with positive social impact. The Brazilian biofuel programme started in the context of the 1973 oil crisis. At that time, the government decided to launch the “Proálcool” (Pro-alcohol) scheme in order to foster an indigenous ethanol-based transport industry that would reduce the country’s dependence on hydrocarbons. Based both on Brazil’s long-established sugarcane sector and a prospering automotive industry, the government put together an attractive package of incentives that gave rise to a new business. From a yearly production of 600 million litres of ethanol in 1975, the Brazilian market evolved rapidly and reached the milestone of 12.6 billion litres in 1986. By 1991, almost 60% of the Brazilian car fleet was ethanol-powered. Despite a temporary downturn in the 1990s, the ethanol sector regained momentum years later, spurred by the technological novelty of the flex engine, which allows for the same vehicle to be powered by petrol or ethanol or any mix of the two. The first flex vehicle was sold in Brazil in 2003. In 2016, 88% of all new cars were fitted with dual-fuel engines. Another push came from the regulation on mandatory blending. As of today, stations throughout the country are mandated to sell petrol with a blend of 27% of anhydrous ethanol. And a new policy, RenovaBio, is about to be enacted: through “decarbonization credits”, oil marketing companies will be encouraged to sell more ethanol while naturally holding - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara back the sales Editor of petrol.

Here’s why Sridevi and Kamal Haasan pairing is irreplaceable Sridevi and Kamal Haasan as a couple were electrifying on the big screen. They together appeared in 27 films including, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi.

New Delhi : Sridevi was introduced to me by my mother. Paranthaalum Vidamaadden from Guru (1980) was playing on the television. “She is Kamal Hassan’s best onscreen pair,” I was told. The song is about the persistence of Kamal’s character to win over Sridevi, who loathes the very sight of his existence. The sequence is set mid-air, with Kamal, and Sridevi flying in different aircrafts. Their headphones are paired and the exchange between them is back and forth. They also have a clear vision of each other as they can catch even the smallest facial expressions made during the course of the song. All this is happening while, let’s say, the flight is at an altitude of 3000040000 ft. Looking back at the song choreography, we can see how it defies basic logic and technology. But, back in the day, it inspired amusement from the viewers. This is what Kamal and Sridevi’s combination was capable of doing. They could make audience buy anything. Well, they weren’t

only selling empty calories through their performances, they encouraged the Tamil audience, who were only fed on masala films, to appreciate slow cinema. In Moondram Pirai (1982), Sridevi’s Viji suffers from a memory disorder that makes her behave like a child. Kamal’s Cheenu saves her from a prostitute racket and becomes her guardian. Nobody other than Sridevi could have made the audience take Viji seriously. It would have mostly been a disaster for other actors. But, Sridevi makes us emotional and invest in a character, which is largely used for comic purposes in commercial films even today. And the presence of Kamal added weight to the narration. Sridevi and Kamal as a couple were electrifying on the big screen. They both brought the best out of each other. Their performance in Sippi Irukkuthu sums up how they complemented each other. In that song, Sridevi challenges Kamal to come up with apt lyrics to the tunes she sings.

Smriti Irani remembers Sridevi, her 'favourite star who defined joy in my childhood'

New Delhi : Sridevi was not just an actress, she was an icon in her own right. The actress, who breathed her last on Saturday night, has left behind a legacy of rich films. Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Smriti Irani, like many others, was in awe of the legendary actress and penned an emotional note on her “favourite star who defined joy in my childhood” passing away. “I pay homage to an actor who through her body of work ascertained that a female actress place in a commercial Hindi movie is not only to compliment her male counterparts,” Smriti wrote in a letter published by News18. “My memories of Sridevi are built through my journey from being a fan girl to an actor and then my role as a politician... She was a woman who knew her mind and despite the challenges that came her way, she approached life with a lot of dignity,” she added. Sridevi was a force to reckon with when it came to the box office, and shouldered several blockbusters. With her dropdead gorgeous looks and charisma, it was easy for her to draw the audiences to the theatres and her superstardom w a s unmatched in those times. “That her male co-stars had to depend on her magic for their box office success was an ode to her calibre,” Smriti wrote. From drama to romance to comedy, there was no genre that Sridevi failed to excel at. It is this versatility that Smriti was in awe of. “It was not just her dance moves that dazzled many, her comic timing is worth a study. The versatility with which she could oscillate between making her audience cry and laugh spoke volumes of her strength as an actor,” she w r o t e .

Bengaluru FC sail past Jamshedpur FC in Indian Super League Bengaluru: Bengaluru FC dealt a serious blow to Jamshedpur FC’s hopes of securing a playoff spot in the Indian Super League (ISL) with a comfortable 2-0 away victory at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar Sunday evening. The loss for Jamshedpur FC means the fate of the debutants as well as FC Goa will now go all the way to the last game of the league to be played on March 4. However, even that may not be enough for Jamshedpur FC to cling on to the fourth place as Goa has one extra game in hand. For Steve Coppell’s men, it didn’t start off well for them. Miku gave visitors the lead 23 minutes into the game from the spot. After being put through on goal, the Spanish striker, who has been in top form this season was brought down inside the box by Jamshedpur FC goalkeeper Subrata Paul. He dusted himself and calmly slotted the ball past Paul. Stung by the goal, Jamshedpur FC who needed to win the game tried to be a bit more ambitions but they were pegged back again barely ten minutes later. Domimas Delgado’s corner from the right found Bengaluru captain Sunil Chettri who leapt over everyone to head the ball past Paul for the second time on the night. Izu Azuka came close to reduce the deficit for the home side in the 40th minute but his effort was tipped over the bar by Bengaluru FC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh. After the restart, the home side again came close to scoring a goal

New Delhi: India skipper Virat Kohli is known to be a complete team-man. So, when he wasn’t fit to play the final T20I against South Africa in Cape Town on Saturday, he decided to give opener Shikhar Dhawan a head massage, just to freshen him up on what was a long tour of the Rainbow Nation for the Indian players. Taking to Twitter, a fan posted the photo which read: “Virat Kohli transferring his skills to Shikhar Dhawan. What a captain IndvsSA” Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan starred with the bat but it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar who again held his nerve in the end as India sealed the T20I series with a sensational 2-1 win over South Africa in Cape Town. India suffered an early blow after in-form Virat Kohli was ruled out due to a stiff back. Stand in skipper Rohit Sharma again departed early, but then Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan made most of some ordinary

South African bowling. Raina counter-attacked but Dhawan played the anchor role with perfection. In fact, Dhawan got his first boundary off the 29th ball but scored an 47 off 40. He was given two chances, with Shamsi dropping a couple of sitters. Southpaw Raina scored a quickfire 43 off just 27 balls, Pandya(21) and Karthik (13) chipped in with the runs towards the end as India finished their innings at 172/7. South Africa bowled well in

patches with Junior Dala again impressive with his raw pace, as he picked up 3/35 in his 4 overs. Morris came back strongly after an ordinary start to finish with figures of 2/43. South Africa never really got into the chase as they got off to a horrendous start, losing in-form Reeza Hendricks early. Miller – who opened the innings for the first time in T20Is – looked lackluster, failing to find boundaries as the home team struggled to get any momentum.

Over 82% of NBFCs registered with RBI categorised as high-risk by Finance Ministry

New Delhi: As of September 2017, there were 11,469 non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) registered with the Reserve Bank of India. Over 82% of them have been categorised as highrisk financial institutions by the Finance Ministry. Under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), all NBFCs have to appoint a principal officer in the financial institutions and report all suspicious and cash transactions of over Rs 10 lakh to the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). But, these companies have been found flouting these

rules as on January 31, 2018. The list of around 9,500 NBFCs released by the FIU today includes names like Purshottam Investofin and Shalibhadra Finance Limited, which were Dalal Street darlings last year with their share prices surging 322% (till Jan 16 this year) and 120% in the past year. Other names on the list include Moody’s Investment Company India Private Limited, Adani Capital Private Limited, Upasana Finance, Dlf Finvest Limited, Bombay Gas Co Ltd, Srestha Finvest Ltd, The Kamdhenu Finance Company Private

Limited, Tribhuvan Finlease & Developers Pvt Ltd among several others. This is not the first time that NBFCs are having a run-in with the authorities. Post-demonetisation, these companies along with several rural and urban cooperative banks had come under the scanner of the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for illegally converting banned currency notes. Given that NBFCs are set to increase their share in the overall credit pie in the next few years, stringent oversight becomes all the more necessary. According to a Crisil report released last November, the share of non-banking financiers in the loan market is expected to go up to 19 per cent by fiscal 2020 - up from 16 per cent in 2016-17 - on the back of an 18 per cent annual growth in their loan books. It’s worth mentioning here that just last week the RBI launched the Ombudsman Scheme for NBFCs aimed at grievance redressal.

Mumbai : The White Swan Pub in Greytown, New Zealand was successfully saved from a fire disaster on Monday after eight fire engines rushed to the spot do douse flames that had originated in the southeastern corner before spreading across to the rest of the building. Among the rescuers, however, was the familiar face of Seth Rance, the New Zealand cricket team bowler who has two ODIs and four T20Is against his name. Seth Rance had earned his international debut in May last year before debuting in the shortest format of the game in December. At 30, however, he’s not on the best side of his life to pursue his cricketing career but he proved that he’s quite good at his task off the field as well. Quite a few New

Seth Rance, who has played two ODIs and four T20Is for the New Zealand cricket team, played his part in putting out a fire at the White Swan Pub in Greytown. Zealand cricketers work for uniformed services besides playing cricket, the best example being that of former faster bowler Shane Bond who is a policeman. Rance, who is a station officer with the Greytown Fire Brigade,

told reporters: “The origin of the fire was in the southern end of the building. There’s a little bit of structural and water damage but it appears to have been caught in time. It’s fortunate we got the call nice and early.”

I learnt by watching the players prepare for matches. I have also been working on my bowling, trying a lot of new things,” he added. While he has had decent performances, Shankar termed his inclusion as a “pleasant surprise”. Being a seam bowling all-rounder, the national selectors are looking at him as a substitute of Hardik Pandya. “I am very happy to have got the call-up. It is a pleasant surprise. My aim has always been to keep improving and to do well in the opportunities I get. I was training when I got the news about my selection for the tri-series in Sri Lanka,”

Shankar said. The 27-yearold all-rounder was picked up Daredevils for Rs 3.2 crore during the IPL auctions last month. Shankar, captain of the Tamil Nadu ODI and T20 sides, has been in good form with the bat, both in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, said he is always looking to improve in both departments. He scored a century (against Gujarat) and a half-century in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy league phase here, though the team played below par and bowed out early. “Personally, I did well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Selection for Sri Lanka tour comes as a ‘pleasant surprise’: Vijay Shankar

Chennai: For someone taking baby steps in international cricket, Vijay Shankar is relieved that he will have his statemates MS Washington Sundar and senior pro Dinesh Karthik for company, when he embarks on his maiden foreign assignment in Sri Lanka with the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team for the Nidahas T20 Trophy. Familiarity in unknown conditions is a bonus and Shankar admits that during an interaction with Agency. ”It is a familiar dressing room, having played with most of the team members (for India A), who have been chosen for the series in Sri Lanka. It will be nice to have them (Karthik and Sundar) also in the dressing room,” Shankar said. The Tamil Nadu all-rounder, who was part of the team for two Tests during the Test series against Sri Lanka last year, said that sharing dressing room helped him learn a lot. “Being part of the national Test set-up is an experience I enjoyed.

Ahmedabad: The February 19 circular stated that land rendered surplus under the provisions of the Agricultural Land Ceiling Act and government wasteland are being allocated to the people of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other backward communities as per the government rules. It further records that “some” beneficiaries of such land allocation have not got possession of the same. Bhavnagar: On a plot of agricultural land, it is unusual to see a police tent with about six-seven personnel camping in it. However, as you go past agriculture fields en route to Badi, a nondescript village in Gogha taluka, Bhavnagar district in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, that sight jumps at you. Villagers from Badi and another 11 villages around it had never really encountered the police – until they decided to protest and fight a case in the high court against the physical possession of land by the Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL) in December last year. On February 15, one day before the Gujarat high court was to hear the case, villagers claim that about 1,200 police personnel swarmed into the 12 villages. Roads between the villages were blocked.

The Gujarat Power Corporation Limited is planning to establish a thermal power plant, construct a colony, have an area for ash dumping and mine for lignite on the 3,000-plus acres of land in Bhavnagar.

Ahmedabad: A former Army man is reportedly the mastermind behind the Rs 98-lakh theft from a cash van near Rajpath Club early this week. Ahmedabad Crime Branch identified the brain behind the operation as Mukesh Yadav and his accomplice, the driver of the van, as Sudhir Badhel, both residents of Etawah in Uttar Pradesh. Five police teams have been formed with one being sent to UP to track, locate and arrested the duo. On February 23, the ATM cash van management company CMS Info System Company’s driver Sudhir ran away with Rs 98 lakh after serving tea, spiked with sleeping pills, to cash van security guards. The police said Mukesh had arranged for a duplicate Aadhar card and police verification letter for Sudhir and another local man Punit, who fled the crime scene with cash. Cops also secured CCTV footage in which driver Sudhir and another suspect Punit are seen fleeing the spot. Mastermind Mukesh is also allegedly seen in the CCTV footage.

Farmers Protest in Gujarat as Government Starts Taking Possession of Land Acquired in 1997

Reportedly, there was one deputy superintendent of police (DySp), ten inspectors, 15 subinspectors, 70 policewomen and 15 personnel from the mounted police division present. “The villagers asked for protection so we are here,” said sub-inspector Makwana, who claimed to be in charge of the tent

where the police personnel are camping. “We have been here for about three days. We have been here all the time, in two shifts,” he told The Wire on February 18, while asking that the police tent not be photographed. However, P.L. The plan was to establish a thermal power plant, construct a colony, have an area for ash dumping and mine for lignite. In 1997, consent was taken from the villagers in the area. However, no attempts were made to take possession of the land until December last year. Reportedly, the fact that the thermal power plant in the area was commissioned in 2017, and not 2000 as originally planned, initiated the process of taking possession.

Ahmedabad: One more senior citizen lost her gold jewellery, worth Rs 2.5 lakh, to fake policemen in the city. The incident happened in Satellite area on Saturday morning. This is the fourth such case reported in the city in February alone. In all these cases, the victims were senior citizens. Vibhaben Choksi, 67, lives with her son Digant at Atithya flat in Gulbai Tekra. On Saturday around 9.30am, she left home with Digant to meet her sister Kokilaben Zaveri who lives in Paraskunj society near Mayurpankh Society in Satellite. He left after dropping her on the service road near the society and she started walking towards her sister’s home. Some distance later, two men stopped her and introduced themselves as policemen. They warned her of thefts and robberies in the city and advised her to take off her gold jewellery. Even before she could react, one of them began

to remove her bangles. According to Vibhaben, she did not remember what happened after that. When she returned to her senses, the men had left and her jewellery, including a ring, earrings and bangles, were missing. Vibhaben immediately called her sister and also informed her son who lodged a complaint at Satellite police station. DB Rana, inspector of Satellite police station, said, “We have started the probe. We are trying to get CCTV footage of the area to find out who these two persons are. They used the same modus operandi that has been used in other police station areas in the city.” According to Digant, the emotional loss for his mother was greater than the physical loss, as the jewellery that was stolen had been gifted to her by his grandmother. On Friday, duplicate cops duped a senior citizen in Paldi of gold jewellery worth Rs 75,000.

Ahmedabad: The concept of ‘going back to the roots’ was taken to a different level at a unique wedding reception in Ahmedabad last week. Pravinbhai Patel, a resident of Science City, had arranged the wedding reception of his son Dhaval (27) and daughter- in-law Srushti (25) at a cowshed on his farm in Lilapur village near Vaishno Devi Circle. Pravinbhai calls himself a cow therapist. The entire setting was traditional. The pandal had walls drawn with jute sheets. Charpoys were placed for guests in the reception area. They later had dinner sitting on the ground. Instead of the usual bottles of RO water, earthen pots were placed. Close to 700 guests attended the reception. Later in the evening, local artistes played Indian instruments like jaltarang and tabla. The father-son duo practises panchagavya medicine, that relates to use of medicinal products made of five cow products like milk, curd, ghee, dung

and cow urine. Pravinbhai, a former realtor, now has a farm on 10 bighas of land where the reception took place. He owns 20 cows. He also makes products like tooth powder, nasal spray made of cow dung and urine and claims to have successfully treated several diseases using panchgavya medicine. “We moved out the animals and used the cowshed to prepare food. The adjacent land was leveled for the reception. We served only organic food and used no disposable or plastic

utensils. Borewell water was served to guests instead of mineral water. Eating inorganic and junk food can permanently damage liver and kidneys,” said Pravinbhai. He added, “My son and I are practitioners of Panchgavya medicine, so it was easy to convince him to have a reception in the company of cows. Relatives did raise objection saying that women may not be able to sit on the floor for dinner but I convinced them that if they follow healthy habits they may be fit enough to do so in future.”

Gautam Shah and actor Vivek Oberoi. Hundreds of school children participated in the event. In the last six centuries, the city, withstood many wars, plunders and kings. What began as a Sultanate city, transformed into a Mughal state after Akbar conquered it in 1572. As Mughal empire weakened, Ahmedabad was the first to face the brunt

of a political void. By 1757, the city was divided between two rulers — the Gaikwads and Peshwas. It was not till the early 19th century that the city came under the British rule. With the World Heritage City status, the city is all set to give its heritage a spotlight. According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the city is dotted by over 2,600

heritage sites, some wellmaintained, while others in dire need of attention and conservation. “Ahmedabad heritage sites have played a vital role in the evolution of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a conservation and preservation body. This book is a documentation of the history behind the forgotten monuments which have changed over the time,” Ahmedabad Mayor Gautam Shah said on Sunday.
