Short News India hands over helicopter, tanks to Bangladesh as 1971 memorabilia

Dhaka : India has handed over to Bangladesh a Mi-4 helicopter and two PT-76 tanks as part of the 1971 Liberation War memorabilia. “The gifts are to be showcased at the Bangladesh army and air force museums,” a defence ministry spokesman said yesterday. He said the helicopter and the tanks were part of gifts given by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj during her Bangladesh visit last year. The memorabilia included 25 weapons like pistol, rifles, machine guns and mortars alongside a large number of artefact, historical photographs, archival audio and video clipping, maps and battle records related to the 1971 Liberation War.

PM arrives in China, his goal clear: Bridge the trust deficit Wuhan: Past midnight Thursday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in this picturesque city of lakes, parks and gardens along the Yangtze river, the big question that followed him was this: Can he bridge the trust deficit with China, and its powerful President Xi Jinping? The answer, The Indian Express has learnt, could possibly lie in a new “modus vivendi”, an arrangement for two conflicting sides to coexist in peace, that the two leaders will work on over the next two days. “The modus vivendi, which was reaffirmed and arrived at during (then PM) Rajiv Gandhi’s 1988 visit, has frayed considerably.

The informal summit is being viewed as an attempt to defrost the icy relationship that developed between India and China following the 73-day long Doklam standoff, which ended last August.

Will be happy to host next ‘informal summit’ in 2019: PM Modi tells Chinese President Xi Jinping

we can have such informal summit in India,” PM Modi was quoted as saying by ANI.The Chinese President has not hosted any leader in an “informal summit”, which is how the Xi-Modi meeting has been described. In fact, Xi has travelled out of Beijing to central China to spend over two days with the Indian PM, the first time he is extending such a gesture to a visiting foreign leader.

New Delhi | Attempting to bridge the trust deficit with China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday told Chinese President Xi Jinping that he will be happy to host the next informal summit in India next year. His comments came during delegation-level talks with President Xi in Hubei. “I hope such informal summits become a tradition between both the countries. I’ll be happy, if in 2019,

Will PM Narendra Modi question China on Doklam standoff, asks Congress

The Congress on Friday asked if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet had accepted that they have failed to confront China on the Doklam standoff last year, and whether the government planned on discussing the same during Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping Friday. In a series of tweets addressed to PM Modi,

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala asked if Modi intended to question China on its response to the situation. He said, “As Modiji ‘hugs’ his friend, President, Xi Jinping today in Wuhan, China, will he remember his innate duty to protect India’s strategic interests & question China on occupation of #Dokalam impacting India’s

National Security?” “Does the PM accept the failure of his Cabinet Min’s (Defense & EAM) to confront China on creation of ‘full-fledged Chinese Military Complex’ in #Doklam right upto 10m from Indian Army post, during their visit on 20th-24th April, as an abdication of their duty to the Nation?” he added. Taking a jibe at the Centre, Surjewala asked if the

Congress known for treating judiciary unfairly, should stop lecturing BJP: Ravi Shankar Prasad

New Delhi : The government on Thursday cited the earlier Congress regime’s “unfair treatment of the judiciary” to counter the opposition party’s criticism of the BJP-led central government over its decision to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its recommendation to elevate Justice K M Joseph to the apex court. “The government is led by Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad and many others who had fought against Emergency and suffered for individual freedom, freedom of media and the independence of judiciary. The Congress should stop lecturing us,” Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said. “The Congress party’s record of giving unfair treatment

and in many ways of unfair treatment of judiciary is well known. The whole record of the Congress is littered with repeated instances of superseding judges who were found to be inconvenient, and censorship,” Prasad said, reacting to the Congress’s attack on the government’s move. Recalling how Justices J M Shelat, K S Hegde and A N Grover were superseded during Congress rule before the

Emergency, the minister said: “The legendary judge Justice H R Khanna, who gave the dissenting judgment in ADM Jabalpur case and upheld the freedom during the Emergency, was denied the position of CJI for two months and superseded by a junior. The real provocation of the imposition of the Emergency was the judgment of Allahabad High Court unseating Indira Gandhi.”

Modi government was incapable of sending a strong message to its neighbour. “India is facing increasingly aggressive China to intrude into the ‘Chicken Neck’ -Siliguri Corridor by building a new road through South of #Doklam (Gateway to the North East), but why is Modi Govt clueless and incapable to send a strong message to China?” he said.

While no police casualties were reported, the operation comes just days after 39 Maoists were killed in Gadchiroli in Maharashtra, which borders Bijapur.

Six women among eight Maoists killed in Bijapur encounter

Raipur : At least eight Maoists, including six women, were killed in a joint operation Friday led by the Greyhounds, Telangana’s elite antiNaxal unit, and aided by the Chhattisgarh police and the CRPF in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. While no police casualties were reported, the operation comes just days after 39 Maoists were killed in Gadchiroli in Maharashtra, which borders Bijapur. Senior police officials told The Indian Express that the operation was launched on Monday based on specific intelligence. The Greyhounds were operationalised from Venkatpuram, while the CRPF and the Chhattisgarh Police

were sent from camps in Usoor and Avapalli in South Bijapur. D M Awasthi, Special DG Anti-Naxal Operations Chhattisgarh said, “The forces, from Telangana, and Chhattisgarh were sent out for the operation on Monday. After four days there was an exchange of fire lasting close to two hours which began around 6 am on Friday. The encounter spot is 13 km from Ilmidi police station on a very remote hillock which was thus far considered a safe zone for Maoists.” Police said eight bodies were recovered by security personnel, with Awasthi adding that “they may have been more deaths or injuries to the Maoists.”

Gadchiroli encounter: Eight of 39 Maoists killed may be new recruits

Madhya Pradesh: Congress appoints Kamal Nath as state chief, Jyotiraditya Scindia to lead poll campaign

Nagpur : AT LEAST eight of the 39 Maoists killed in the two police operations in Gadchiroli on Sunday and Monday may have been new recruits, possibly only a day or two into the fold. On Thursday, nine people from Gattepalli village came to Gadchiroli to meet Superintendent of Police Abhinav Deshmukh. Divisional committee member Sainath, killed in Sunday’s operation, belonged to Gattepalli. “The people who came to meet me said that five women and three men from their village had gone with Sainath a day or two before the incident. Sainath used to take the eight to the forest, according to them. There is a possibility that they were being trained for recruitment. The eight may have eventually joined as militia members. The villagers said that the eight haven’t returned since then,” Deshmukh told news agancy.

New Delhi : The Congress on Thursday stopped short of naming a Chief Ministerial candidate for the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, appointing old warhorse Kamal Nath as the new president of the state unit and handing over the reins of the campaign to the young Jyotiraditya Scindia in a delicate balancing act. Sources said new heads will soon be appointed in a few more states, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Arun Yadav, the outgoing president of the state unit, announced that he would not contest either Lok Sabha or Assembly polls in the state. Yadav said he was leaving for Delhi on Thursday and was likely to meet Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, a meeting he said would decide his future responsibility in the party. When asked if he was unhappy with the party for replacing him ahead of the Assembly elections, he replied in the negative and said he would continue to work for the organisation. Scindia had been demanding

that the party announce a CM candidate in Madhya Pradesh, but the high command has virtually made Nath, the nine-time Lok Sabha MP from Chhindwara, the front-runner for the post by naming him as the state unit chief.Scindia was the chairman of the campaign committee during the 2013 Assembly elections as well. Sources in the Congress said the party is still open to announcing a CM candidate. “It is still very much open. Appropriate decisions will

be taken at the appropriate time,” a senior AICC functionary told news agancy. While Scindia was keen to have a central role for himself, Kamal Nath emerged as the choice for the party president’s post after former chief minister Digvijaya Singh threw his weight behind him. The realisation that he as the senior-most leader from the state could be better equipped to manage factional feuds was another reason which went in his favour.

Making history in Panmunjom

S ports for peace as one of the principles that drive the Olympic Spirit was on display at the Winter Games in the South Korean city of Pyeongchang, when athletes of North and South Korea marched under one flag at the opening ceremony. The Games, thus, became the launching pad for a historic meeting between North Korean strongman Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in that could defuse one of the biggest threats to human existence. When the grandson of North Korea's founder and the son of a North Korean refugee who crossed over to the South shook hands and performed a symbolic crossing of the line representing the two borders in the de-militarised zone, they were literally embarking on a new era of peace. In a joint declaration after the deliberations, the two leaders vowed to formally end the Korean War, which meant that there was need to do so although hostilities had ceased 65 years ago, so delicate was the situation between the two Korean states, which follow extremely contrasting political systems although united by a common culture. The 'Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification on the Korean Peninsula', pledged to the 80 million Koreans and the whole world that there would not be any more war on the Korean peninsula, as the two leaders declared their common goal to achieve complete de-nuclearisation. The two also agreed to actively seek the support and cooperation of the international community in this endeavour. The Korean summit will, probably, lead to a bigger one between Kim and US President Donald Trump, the credit for the backroom work of which should go to the South Korean President. Trump has also been tempering his language while referring to Kim ever since these efforts have been on. Trump had called the North Korean leader the 'Little Rocket Man' after Pyongyang announced its sixth ballistic missile test; but, two days ago, he described him as a 'very open' and 'very honourable' person, suggesting what is seen as the possibility of a high-stakes meeting as early as in May or June to broker a deal on de-nuclearisation. But there is need to be guided by a sense of realism when celebrating the extraordinary scenes that are emerging from Panmunjom. There are bigger challenges waiting for the Trump-Kim meeting, whenever and wherever it happens. De-nuclearisation is a very broad area and it could mean different things to different parties. Until there is agreement on the specifics and both sides are ready to accommodate each other's position, de-nuclearisation could be a far cry from total disarmament which is the ideal goal, but most difficult to achieve. Be that as it may, there can, however, be no two opinions on the significance of Friday's epoch-making deliberations.

Bollywood - Hollywood Karan Johar wishes he could rework on this in My Name Is Khan

Rishi is quiet impressed with son Ranbir Kapoor's transformation for upcoming biopic 'Sanju'.

If Ranbir's one film like Jagga Jasoos flops he has no work, Rishi Kapoor reveals

Karan Johar is proud of his 2010 blockbuster 'My Name is Khan' but the director says if he had a chance to revisit the film he would have made some technical changes to make the movie look better. The film was about an Indian Muslim man Rizwan

Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), with Asperger's syndrome who embarks on a journey to meet the President of the United States of America and attempts to change people's perception about his religion after 9/11 attacks.

Rishi Kapoor is quiet impressed with son Ranbir Kapoor's transformation for upcoming biopic 'Sanju', and the veteran actor says he is proud of the hard work the young star has put in for his role in the Rajkummar Hirani-directed movie. The teaser and first look of 'Sanju', which is based on the life of Bollywood's one of the most controversial stars Sanjay Dutt, was released recently and Rishi says the response Ranbir is getting for his look is because of his dedication to the craft. The 65-year-old actor believes Ranbir has inherited his passion for cinema from him. "I found it very good. He is looking the part. He has worked very hard for all those different parts. To make up his body, he

Ranbir's last outing 'Jagga Jassos' had failed to garner much attention from the audiences, but Rishi believes an actor should not succumb to failures. "...Some films will work, some won't. No actor has 100 percent track record. But the passion should be continuous. The fire within you as an actor should always keep burning. That should be the mantra for any good actor," he said. Rishi said Ranbir is a risk taker and the fact that he does one film at a time makes things even tougher for him.

Kareena says hubby Saif pushed her to work

Kareena Kapoor Khan will be seen on the silver screen after a gap of almost two years and the actor credits her husband Saif Ali Khan for motivating her to get back to films. Kareena, who took a small break from films in 2016 during her pregnancy, was back on sets months after giving birth to baby boy Taimur. The actor started filming Veere Di Wedding in September last year, the trailer of which was released today. “I wasn’t pregnant when I signed this film. I am lucky to have a husband who is so understanding. Apart from him, producer Rhea (Kapoor), stood by me. I had to call Rhea and tell her ‘I am pregnant and she needs to take someone else’. It was Rhea’s conviction. She was like ‘let’s just wait’. After that it was Saif who kind of pushed me and said ‘I think you should hit the gym and

get back to the studio’. He said, ‘take your son with you and set an example to other mothers’. I think it’s been good till now. This journey has been beautiful,” Kareena said at the trailer launch. The 37-year-old actor said a lot of couples now share household responsibilities and it is no more a big deal if a woman returns to work post baby. “...I am sure in today’s time we are sharing everything. We are sharing responsibilities and we are sharing our lives together. So we will share the pressure also,” she said. Veere Di Wedding, also starring Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, releases on June 1, but Kareena has not signed any other projects as of now. “I haven’t thought about what I am going to do next. Taimur is 16-month-old and I am giving him time and will be promoting this film.

I'm unfortunately travelling and would love for Balki Sir to collect the award on my behalf. Thank you for the love and admiration once again."

Ranveer Singh was noticeably missing in action at a party at Zoya Akhtar’s house following the completion of her film 'Gully Boy'. Ranveer plays the lead in the film along with Alia Bhatt and the film also had a wrap-up party earlier. While everyone from Karan Johar to Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt and Farhan Akhtar to the non-filmi Shweta Bachchan were present at the bash, Ranveer, however, was conspicuously absent. It turns out that Ranveer was only enjoying a vacation in Switzerland as a post from Yash Raj Films revealed. Not long ago, Ranveer was seen praising Zoya to the hilt but decided to pick his Swiss sojourn over the party as he had already planned that earlier.

For example, it can help us identify any unknown entity in the high sea. In case of any hazardous climate, a warning message can be flashed to fishermen who might be in the high sea. This can be implemented in all coastal areas of the country.”

London : U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday praised the meeting of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, acknowledging the historic summit even as he raised questions about how long the positive diplomacy would last Kim and Moon earlier Friday pledged to work toward the “complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula,” and seek to declare an official end to the 1950s Korean War and establish a permanent peace agreement. In a pair of tweets,

Trump appeared optimistic that a summit would be fruitful as he eyed his own meeting with Kim, expected in the coming weeks. “KOREAN WAR TO END! The United States, and all of its GREAT people, should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!” Trump said on Twitter. “Good things are happening, but only time will tell!” he added. The U.S. president has said he hopes to meet with Kim in May or June, and a White House official has said Trump may seek to meet with Moon before hand.

The two Korean brother states approach each other in a demonstrative and cordial manner. More important than the agreed measures, however, is that years of silence have come to an end, says DW's Alexander Freund. London : They come from completely different worlds: from the south the somewhat inconspicuous human rights lawyer Moon Jae-in, from the north the ruler Kim, the eerie enfant terrible of international politics. Moon the pragmatic bridge builder, Kim Jong Un the provocative rocket man. A South Korean president who had to flee the North and fight for democracy all his life,

meets a tyrant from the third generation who is worshipped like a god and who primarily has his dynasty’s survival in mind. Despite all the differences, the ice between the two Koreans was quickly broken. The two greeted each other warmly in no man’s land. And, for the first time, a North Korean ruler entered South Korean soil. Hand in hand, they then spontaneously crossed the line of

demarcation once again, which will no longer be the symbol of separation but of peace, Moon said. And the unapproachable ruler from Pyongyang also deliberately relaxed, grinned broadly into the cameras from all over the world, patted the flower children and joked with his sister, who always shines at his side, about the prepared menu with delicacies from both Koreas.
