Short News Two years & BDA cannot decide if commercial complex or HQ!

Bhopal: After settling numerous controversies and legal hassles that went on for two years, Bhopal Development Authority (BDA) succeeded in acquiring 1 acre, adjacent to ISBT. However, another two years were lost in taking a decision whether to build the headquarters of BDA on the plot or turn it into a commercial complex. Recently, it was decided to build an office-cumcommercial complex and an architect was also selected, but the Supreme Court granted a stay. This dealt a blow to the cash-strapped BDA.

Biker snatches woman's gold chain worth Bhopal: Another chain snatching incident has been reported from Nishatpura. A biker allegedly hit a 60-yearold woman with his bike and snatched her gold chain worth Rs40,000 the police said on Wednesday. The incident took place on May 26 morning, but the matter was reported later. According to Babulal Pal, 62, a retired army man and victim's husband, they were walking in the Sanjeev Nagar area around 7 am. His wife was walking about 100 metres away from him. A man, aged between 25-30 hit her with his bike and snatched her gold chain, after she fell down on the road. 'Commission hubs' shut after BJP came to power, says Jha Ujjain: Famous for his scathing remarks, Prabhat Jha, national vice president of BJP, on Wednesday claimed that since the BJP government came to power at the Centre, the 'commission hubs' of Delhi have shut down. He said, "North and South avenue of Delhi used to be hub of brokers where big shot white collars of Bihar & UP used to sit but since BJP came to power, their shops have shut." He said, "Tradition of commission has closed and transparency has come in the system." He was speaking to reporters at the local BJP office in the city. He said that condolence gathering of Congress president Rahul Gandhi is a mere 'vote sabha' and nothing else. He said, "If any untoward incident occurs during Gandhi's visit.

Banking services hit as employees' strike continues for 2nd day

New Delhi : UFBU has claimed that the strike is "total success" as the employees have "enthusiastically participated in the strike in all banks and in all branches". According to reports received by UFBU from various states and centres like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Patna, Nagpur, Jammu, Guwahati, Jamshedpur, Lucknow, Agra, Ambala, and Trivandrum, employees have enthusiastically participated in the strike in all banks and

branches. There are about 85,000 branches of 21 public sector banks across the country having business share of about 70 per cent. Operations in the new-generation private banks like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, however,

Legal drinking age: Mostly 21; 25 in Delhi and four other states New Delhi/Jakarta: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over one paisa price cut and said ''If this is your idea of a prank, it’s childish and in poor taste.'' Rahul Gandhi tweeted ''Dear PM, You've cut the price of Petrol and Diesel today by 1 paisa. ONE paisa!?? If this is your idea of a prank, it’s childish and in poor taste. P.S. A ONE paisa cut is not a suitable response to the #FuelChallenge I threw you last week.''

Earlier in the day, Indian Oil announced on their website that they had cut oil prices in the country by 60 paise after sixteen consecutive days of high prices which had angered everyone. However, cheer among the consumers short-lived, thanks to an error in the official website of Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL). Petrol and diesel prices were actually cut by 1 paisa per litre each in the capital city of Delhi on Wednesday instead of a bigger cut that was reported earlier by India's

largest fuel retailer. Earlier in the morning, its website said that petrol and diesel prices have been reduced by 60 paise and 56 paise per litre respectively. The oil companies this morning announced reduction in petrol price by 60 paise to Rs 77.83 a litre and diesel by 56 paise to Rs 68.75 in Delhi. This was rectified to 1 paisa a litre. Meanwhile, State government of Kerala has decided to cut petrol and diesel prices by Re 1 per litre.

New Delhi :Last week, Delhi High Court sought the Delhi government’s response on a plea seeking to quash the provision prescribing 25 years as the legal age for drinking alcohol. The petitioner, an advocate, felt that the rule is discriminatory because in other states, “the legal age for consuming alcohol is less than 25 years”. While most states set the limit at 21 years, Delhi is not the only state with a lower age limit of 25. Besides, prohibition is in force in a number of states. A few states, on the other hand,

set their legal drinking age even below 21 years. In the CBSE Class XII results declared over the weekend, girls outshone boys with 88.31% girls passing as compared to 78.99% boys. This has been the trend for the last several years. This year, the trend has also held true across the 10 CBSE regions. The gender gap is widest in Patna (13 percentage points) and narrowest in Thiruvananthapuram (2 percentage points). Over 11 lakh students — 4.8 lakh girls and 6.3 lakh boys — appeared this year.

the training centres under the Railways. Earlier in 2014, Modi had announced a railway university for research and modernisation of the country’s railway system in particular. -Internally named National Rail Transport University (NRTU), the university will start its classes from National Academy of Indian Railways (NAIR) in Vadodara, Gujarat. -Pramath Sinha — founding-dean of Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, and co-founder

of Ashoka University — has been drafted in to advise the government on how to set up the university, and what shape it should take to be a future-ready centre for excellence in transport-infrastructure engineering -The admission process is open till June 30. The students can apply for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by the institution. -Private players may also be roped in to partner with the running of the university at a later stage.

were almost normal, barring few activities including cheque clearance. Nearly 10 lakh employees, working in various branches of 21 public sector banks, 13 old generation private sector banks, six foreign banks and 56 regional rural banks across the country went on a two-day strike yesterday as IBA offered them a nominal wage revision, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), affiliate of UFBU had said in a statement. Since the strike coincides with the month-

end, salary withdrawals from branches were said to be affected yesterday and the situation is likely to remain same today as well, said sources in the banking sector and employees union. Operations like deposits, FD renewals, government treasury operations, money market operations are also being reportedly hit by the strike. In its last wage negotiation meeting held earlier this month, IBA proposed a nominal salary revision to bank employees.

Pro Kabaddi League 2018 Auctions Day 1: Monu Goyat most expensive buy, Iran’s Fazel Atrachali costliest overseas pick

Monu Goyat became the costliest pick on the first day of the Pro Kabaddi League 2018 auctions on Wednesday. This was after Haryana Steelers secured his services for an astronomical amount of Rs 1.51 crore. However, Goyat was not the only one to make headlines on the first day of the auctions held in Mumbai, as a total of six players bagged more than a crore. Nitin Tomar, Rishank Devadiga and Deepak Niwas Hooda also crossed the Rs 1 crore-mark. Tomar and Hooda, both fetched Rs 1.15 crore as Puneri Paltan and Jaipur Pink Panthers secured their services respectively. Devadiga also entered the crorepati club after being sold to UP Yoddha for Rs 1.11 crore. Rahul Chaudhari too attracted a lot of bids before finally being sold to Delhi for Rs 1.29 crore. While the star players fetched a large amount of money there were also a few surprises in store for some of the big names at the table. Renowned defender Mohit

Chillar went to Jaipur Pink Panthers for a sum of Rs 21 lakh. Manjeet went to Tamil Thalaivas for Rs 20 lakh. Veteran Anup Kumar was sold to Pink Panthers for 30 lakh while Wazir Singh went to Haryana Steelers for 20 lakh. Earlier, Iran’s Fazel Atrachali became the first Kabaddi Player to enter the 1 croreclub after he was bought by U Mumba for the same amount. “I am very happy to be back in my second home – U Mumba. I have immense respect for the U- Mumba team because it is where it all began for me. The fact that I beat the record for the highest bid in Pro Kabaddi is truly an incredible feeling,” Fazel Atrachali said after being picked by the Mumbai based franchise. “We wanted to be strong in defence. We had an extremely strong defence in season 1 and season 2 and that was part of the reason why we bargained for Fazal so fiercely. Fazal is someone who has played with us and we are quite happy to have him back.

New icons in NCERT books: Bajirao to Maharana Pratap New Delhi : The revised NCERT textbooks place new emphasis on a fresh set of nationalist icons, many of whom, the BJP and right organisations claim, were deliberately sidelined in the country’s collective memory. Spiritual leaders Sri Aurobindo and Swami Vivekananda, freedom fighters Lala Lajpat Rai and Vallabhbhai Patel, Peshwa and Maratha general Bajirao Ballal, Jat king Suraj Mal, Rajput icon Maharana Pratap and Chhatrapati Shivaji, founder of the Maratha empire, have either been introduced or have more space dedicated to them in the new History textbooks that hit the shelves two months ago.

The Indian Express, in a monthlong exercise, compared old and revised versions of 25 textbooks meant for Classes 6 to 10, across five subjects — History, Geography, Political Science, Science and English. According to the analysis, the revision is more noticeable in the case of Swami Vivekananda and Aurobindo Ghose. – The Class 8 History textbook, Our Past-III, Part II, introduces Sri Aurobindo

and his thoughts on the goals of national education along with his photograph. “In a speech delivered on January 15, 1908 in Bombay, Aurobindo Ghose stated that the goal of national education was to awaken the spirit of nationality among the students. This required a contemplation of the heroic deeds of our ancestors… Aurobindo Ghose emphasised that although the students should remain connected to their own roots, they should also take the fullest advantage of modern scientific discoveries and Western experiments in popular governments,” the textbook states. – While the old version of Our PastIII, Part II makes a brief mention

(21 words) of the Ramakrishna Mission and Swami Vivekananda, the revised book carries another 250 words on the latter. The new paragraph quotes the New York Herald’s report on Vivekananda’s speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago extensively, – NCERT has added the names of Chandra Shekhar Azad, Sukhdev and Rajguru to the section in Chapter 11 of Our Past-III, Part II that talks about freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. The previous version of the textbook read, “Revolutionary nationalists such as Bhagat Singh and his comrades wanted to fight colonial rule and the rich exploiting classes through a

revolution of workers and peasants.” The reprinted version replaces the words “and his comrades” with the names of Chandra Shekhar Azad and Sukhdev. Earlier, the textbook only spoke of Singh’s execution. It now mentions that Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged along with him. – Chapter 10 of the Class 7 History textbook, Our Past-II, introduces Suraj Mal (under the section titled ‘The Jats’) as the king under whom “the power of Jats reached its zenith”. “Suraj Mal built a number of forts and palaces and the famous Lohagarh fort in Bharatpur is regarded as one of the strongest forts built in this region,” it states. – In addition to the

existing text on Shivaji in chapters 3 and 10 of Our Past-II, chapter 10 (under the section on Maratha rulers) now carries an additional 100 words on the Maratha ruler, his guerrilla warfare tactics and how he embarked on a career of conquest at a young age, and, subsequently, laid the foundation of a strong empire. A portrait of Shivaji has also been introduced in this chapter. – The section on Marathas in the same chapter, which talks about the role of Peshwas in building the Maratha empire, now also mention Peshwa Baji Rao I as a great general known for “his military campaign against Malwa, Bundelkhand, Gujarat and the Portuguese”.

MP braces for Mandsaur farmers' stir

Mandsaur will turn into a Kurukshetra from June 1 onwards, when various farmers' organisations launch a 10-day agitation to mark the first anniversary of the agrarian stir, which took a violent turn last year, culminating in the killing of six people. Brisk preparations are being made by the farmers' organisations for the success of the statewide protests. The Congress, on its part, is preparing for the visit of its national president, Rahul Gandhi, on June 6. Besides addressing rallies, he will visit many villages affected by last year's movement. He may also call on the families of those killed in the firing. The government is making elaborate preparations to ensure that the 10-day agitation passes off peacefully. CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has asked both civil and police officials to handle the stir with patience. Taking a lesson from the incident during the agitation in Mandsaur, the state government is observing caution ahead of this year's agitation. Chouhan met the divisional commissioner and inspectors-general (I-Gs) of police and told them to have patience and remain alert during the agitation called by the farmers' organisations from June 1-10. He told them to be present on the ground and not to depend on feedback from the lower rungs. Chouhan told the divisional commissioners that the farmers need to be told of the significant work done by the government for them. He claimed that all the demands of the farmers had been accepted and their future demands would also be accepted. Meanwhile, it is learned that the administration is monitoring 410 villages of Mandsaur, Neemuch and Ratlam districts. About 100 villages of Mandsaur, which were the worst-affected during last year's agitation, are being monitored with greater intensity. The administration has prepared an elaborate plan to keep an eye on possible trouble-makers. According to the plan, 1,500 people from the area have been made to sign bonds with the assurance of keeping good behaviour, 1,300 people have been given red cards, with warning of dire consequences if peace is disrupted, and 1,050 people who participated in the last agitation have been warned to stay away. On June 6, 2017, a farmer died in Nayakheda (Neemuch) in police firing, so, cops are on a high alert there. Following intelligence inputs from the central agencies on the agitation, the officials have started collecting details of the farmers and political leaders who are a potential threat to peace. While interacting with the media, I-G (Intelligence) Makrand Deouskar suspected that the farmers' protest could go nasty as many other organisations have signalled they will join the agitation against the government.

Dhadak actor Janhvi Kapoor: After mom, now Khushi puts me to sleep

Mumbai: Late veteran actor Sridevi’s daughter Janhvi Kapoor is waiting for her big debut with Karan Johar’s production venture Dhadak. Some stills from the film have already guaranteed that Janhvi will definitely remind all the fans of her mother and iconic actor Sridevi but as everyone awaits its trailer, Karan Johar and his team revealed Janhvi’s first-ever magazine cover for Vogue. As soon as KJo shared the cover picture, congratulatory messages have been flooding Twitter and Instagram. Sonam Kapoor shared the image and recalled that on the same day (May 30) 10 years ago, she made her magazine cover debut with the same magazine. But there is more to this magazine’s June issue. Apart from featuring the biggest debutant of the year, it also has her first interview, taken by the ace director Karan Johar himself. In the interview, Janhvi has spoken about being a fashionista, her bond with Sridevi and the actors who she really admires. The actor has never

shied away from talking about her mother Sridevi. Now that she is no more, Karan asked if Janhvi “feel a void, that you can’t turn to your mum now,” to which the actor replied, “Of course. I could always be the baby with her. When I’d wake up, the first thing I’d do was ask for her. I’d need her to put me to sleep sometimes and she literally had to feed me. The day before she left for the wedding, I had to shoot, but I couldn’t sleep, so I was like, “I need you to come and put me to sleep.” But she was packing, so by the time she came to me I was half asleep. But I could feel her patting my head.” While one might have expected Janhvi to become mature and independent after Sridevi’s untimely death, the actor shares said the situation was just opposite. When Karan asked, “Do you feel more maternal with Khushi now?”, Janhvi said, “I’ve always been very bad at that. Khushi is very maternal with me. I am a full baby. She takes care of me. Now she comes and puts me to sleep

Ki Barfi, I really wanted Rajkummar Rao to notice me, so I commented on all his photos. He’s the only person I’ve asked for a photo with.” And as far as female lead is concerned, Janhvi named Alia “is in top form.”

The F word is liberally used in the trailers for Veere Di Wedding, whether it is in English or Hindi, said casually or with feeling. There’s another F word that’s being bandied about at the scores of promotional events the cast have been attending to talk about the film: feminism. Not quite the one to rise to the occasion in this regard, Kareena Kapoor Khan, whose character’s wedding appears to be the event the film is plotted around, recently said, “I believe in equality. I won’t say I am a feminist. I would say I am a woman. Above all, I am a human being. But I would say I am as proud to be known as Saif Ali Khan’s wife as I am to be Kareena Kapoor.” Releasing on Friday, Veere Di Wedding is directed by Shashanka Ghosh (Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II, Quick Gun Murugun and Khoobsurat), and stars Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania in lead roles, as four friends who each face a set of challenges in their lives. While the cast collectively seems shy to talk in length about feminism, the F word they do want to focus on at the moment is Fun. “I’m playing Sakshi, who’s urban, English-speaking and educated and so incredibly rich, that she’s never heard ‘no’. She’s a lovable brat, but mostly an idiot. I had fun bringing a certain type of randomness to this character,” says Bhasker, who took up the role as a change from playing “characters from BIMARU states”. A change of scenery was also why Talsania jumped at the chance of coming onboard the film. After her debut in Wake Up Sid (2009), where she played Ranbir Kapoor’s best friend, Talsania did several theatre projects and parts in independent films. “A lot of scripts coming my way played to the stereotype of a big girl who is hungry or horny, or both. I was the last to be cast — Mukesh Chhabra, the casting director, called me and asked me to come for a look test. My character eloped, married and has a small child. I liked the script because it’s about four friends at different stages of their lives.

can immerse me, and all these actors are so expressive,” she said. This means more than good looks, it is the body of work that impresses Janhvi. “Definitely. I’m not sure if I should say this, but after watching Bareilly

sometimes.” Janhvi was also asked to name a contemporary lead actor that she finds attractive on screen. She named Rajkummar Rao, Dhanush and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. “They’re so good! I’m attracted to someone who

Before Sanju, these five realistic biopics entertained Bollywood fans

Mumbai: It’s raining biopics in Bollywood this season. While the year has already seen some riveting biopics like Pad Man, Omerta and Raazi, director Rajkumar Hirani is all set to present his take on actor Sanjay Dutt’s tumultous life with Sanju later next month. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and others, Sanju’s first trailer is due for release today. The biopic tide has been nothing short of an obsession for filmmakers lately with six biopics in 2017, three already released in 2018 and more than five biopics planned for the rest of the year including the

Kangana Ranaut-starrer Manikarnika, The Accidental Prime Minister based on Manmohan Singh’s life and Kapil Dev’s biopic among others. While personalities belonging to diverse walks of life have been impersonated for the celluloid in the past, there are a very few Bollywood biopics that have stood out from the crowd. Often, the events are fictionalised to an extent that the essence of a true story itself is lost in the mayhem. While the contention between reality and fiction will always go on, whether these biopics make for compelling cinematic works is another debate altogether. But sometimes,

Bollywood too, has been able to strike that right chord between real life and imaginative writing that the results have been true-blue gems to boast of. Before Sanju’s trailer arrives today, we list down five such realistic yet entertaining biopics in Bollywood: This 1994 film is a fascinating account of the life of Phoolan Devi. Phoolan Devi was an infamous bandit of the 70s who later even became a Member of Parliament. With the exceptionally talented Seema Biswas as Phoolan Devi, Bandit Queen was a powerful piece of work chronicling the rise and fall of various gang leaders and

Phoolan Devi in particular. Helmed by veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur,

Bandit Queen even won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in

Before Veere Di Wedding, here’s looking at the box office collection of Sonam Kapoor’s last five films

Veere Di Wedding actor Sonam Kapoor made her debut in the Hindi film industry in 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. Within a decade, she won her first National

Award for the movie Neerja in 2017. The actor was appreciated for playing the brave heart air hostess Neerja Bhanot with conviction. In her career of 16 films, Sonam has

many hits and misses to her credit. While her debut film Saawariya failed to pull people to the theaters, she tasted success with Raanjhanaa (Rs 60.35 crore), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (Rs 108.93 crore), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Rs 210.16 crore) and Neerja (Rs 75.61 crore). Now with Veere Di Wedding releasing on June 1, it will be interesting to see if a stellar star cast (Sonam, Kareena, Swara and Shikha) and the urbane story will add up to the box office performance of the film. So before we get to see if the Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor production will get into the 100-crore club of Bollywood, here is looking back at how Sonam’s last five silver screen outings have performed at the ticket counters.

R Balki directorial Pad Man which initiated the conversation on menstrual hygiene in India did a total business of Rs 81.82 crore in the domestic market. The film had Akshay Kumar playing Padma Shri winner, Arunachalam Muruganantham and Radhika Apte played his wife. Sonam essayed the role of an educated urban woman. The film opened to mixed reviews from film critics but the social message in this Twinkle Khanna production pulled movie buffs to the cinema halls. With Neerja.

Sumeet Vyas: I don’t think I’ll get overshadowed in Veere Di Wedding From being a television artiste, a supporting cast member in feature films, a short film actor to a heartthrob of the young generation with his TVF web series Permanent Roommates, Sumeet Vyas has come a long way. He is now credited as a talented actor, a director and a writer. The latest addition to his filmography is the ensemble film Veere Di Wedding. Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker.

Corruption in Sri Lanka cricket goes right to the top, says Arjuna Ranatunga

Former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga has stirred up a fresh controversy after alleging that corruption in Sri Lankan cricket goes right up to the top.

New Delhi: Former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga has stirred up a fresh controversy after alleging that corruption in Sri Lankan cricket goes right up to the top. Referring to the sting operation by news channel Al Jazeera, which claims of pitch-fixing in the island nation, Ranatunga stated that there is a lot more than what meets the eye. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Ranatunga

said, “This is something that goes right to the top (in Sri Lanka). What they will catch is the small fish. As usual the bigger fish will get away. I am so disappointed with the ICC anti-corruption unit,” Ranatunga said. Ranatunga has also accused SLC President Thilan Sumathipala of being involved in gambling which is a clear violation of the ICC rules. “If they can’t see what is happening in Sri

Lanka… they should not sit on this anti-corruption unit,” Ranatunga said. However, Sumathipala has denied the charge. Referring to the groundsmen of Galle Stadium who have been implicated in the video, the former Sri Lankan captain said, “They are small fish. They can’t do it unless they have agreement with those right at the top.” Meanwhile, SLC vice-president Mohan de Silva has denied all the allegations and said, “In that video, they only say that the Galle match ended in twoand-half days. Players never complained. Nothing was mentioned in the captains’ reports. No complaints from umpires and match referee as well. So it is difficult for us to believe something wrong has happened.

India vs Afghanistan: Rashid Khan, Mujeeb stars in spin-heavy Afghanistan squad for India Test

New Delhi: World’s premier T20 bowler Rashid Khan will headline a four-pronged spin attack in the 15-strong Afghanistan squad announced in New Delhi for the historic one-off Test against India in Bengaluru, starting June 14. Apart from IPL sensations Rashid and young Mujeeb ur Rahman, the other two spinners are chinaman Zahir Khan and left-arm orthodox Amir Hamza Hotak in the Ashgar Stanikzai-led squad.\ Rashid and Mujeeb had made the entire world sit up and take notice of their talent in the shortest format, but the duo is set to face a different battle of attrition with the red SG Test in their hands. Between them, they have played only four first-class games (all four played by Rashid while 17-year-old Mujeeb is yet to play a longer format encounter). The batting will primarily depend on skipper Stanikzai, flamboyant opener Mohammed Shahzad and batting all-rounder Mohammed Nabi. In all, the squad has a collective

experience of 205 first-class games, which makes it 13.6 four-day games per player. Only four players have an experience of 20 plus firstclass matches. Nabi, who has the experience of playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the past two IPL seasons, is the most capped first-class player with 32 games. He is followed by skipper Stanikzai with 23 games, pacer Wafadar (22 games) and Shahzad 20 games. Afghanistan will miss their experienced seamer Dawlat Zadran out with an injury and the pace department will be handled by Yamin Ahmadzai Wafadar and Sayed Ahmed Shirzad. Experienced left-arm seamer

Shapoor Zadran has been picked for the T20s against Bangladesh in Dehradun but he has not been picked in the longer version as he last played a four-day game in 2013. Undoubtedly, all eyes will be on Rashid, whom Tendulkar has termed as the “best T20 bowler in the world”. “He is doing really well, specially the shorter format – T20, he did fantastic for Sunrisers, he is a quality bowler and everyone needs to accept and respect that. Afghanistan can’t be taken lightly, because in cricket and in generally in life you cannot take anything for granted,” India’s stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane said.

Eoin Morgan to lead England against Australia, Scotland despite broken finger Billings drops out. Limitedovers specialist Alex Hales and Adil Rashid have been selected in the two squads alongside allrounder Moeen Ali, who was dropped from England’s test side during the tour to New Zealand in March. England, who are number one in the ODI world rankings, beat hosts Australia 4-1 in a five-match series in January. Squad v Scotland New Delhi: England’s limitedovers captain Eoin Morgan has been included in the one-day international (ODI) squad to face Australia and Scotland despite suffering a finger injury, the England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday. Morgan fractured the ring finger on his right hand while fielding against Somerset in a Royal London One-Day Cup match and will not play for the World XI in Thursday’s charity Twenty20 game against West Indies at

Lord’s. But the 31-year-old is expected to regain full fitness ahead of England’s one-off encounter with Scotland on June 10 before they face Australia three days later. England have rested wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler for the match in Edinburgh, with Sam Billings drafted in as replacement in the 13-man squad. Buttler and pace bowler Tom Curran will return to a 14-man squad for the fivematch series against Australia starting on June 13, while

Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood. Death of 111 Infants in Gujarat: Adani hospital international claims it has got clean chit from govt probe panel Normal monsoon with 97%

Ahmedabad : THE GUJARAT Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS) in Bhuj of Kutch district on Tuesday claimed that a state government-appointed committee to probe 111 deaths of infants at its hospital had given a “clean chit” to the institute even as the committee refused to comment on the matter. The state government had set up a three-member inquiry committee last week after media reports claimed that 111 infants had died at the GAIMS hospital (earlier known as GK General Hospital) in Bhuj since January this year. The committee had Dr Bhadresh Vyas, head of paediatrics department at MP Shah Government Medical College, Jamnagar; Dr Himanshu Joshi, head of paediatrics department at Gujarat Medical Education and Research Societyrun Medical College and Hospital, Gandhinagar and Dr Kamal Goswami, associate professor with obstetrics and gynecology department of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Medical College, Rajkot, as its members. The committee had visited GAIMS hospital on Saturday and submitted its report to the state health department on Monday. GAIMS issued a press release on Tuesday and claimed that the three-member committee had given the hospital a clean chit. “The inquiry committee set up by the Gujarat government to look into the deaths of infants at GAIMS hospital has given a clean chit to the hospital administration on Tuesday. According to this report (of the committee), treatment given at hospital was in accordance with set protocols and guidelines… The committee has noted in its report that majority of patients had serious complications like neonatal sepsis, birth asphyxia, congenital

“Gujarat has embarked on Jal Sanchay Abhiyan as people’s campaign to conserve enough water for future generation,” says Chief Minister Ahmedabad : Chief Minister Mr. Vijay Rupani today offered shramdan to launch the Dodiya talav deepening works at Rankuva in Chikhli taluka in Navsari district with people’s participation as part of month-long statewide Sujalam Sufalam Jal Sanchay Abhiyan-20. He said the campaign comprises deepening 13,000 ponds, check dams and riverbeds, reviving 32 rivers, cleansing 5,500-km canal network, in collaboration with 3,000 organisations, with the help of over 4,000 JCB machines, 14,000 tractors-trucks, to create 11,000lakh cubic feet additional water storage capacity, providing jobs to 3.24-lakh people. Mr. Rupani said the government would soon announce urban gutter water recycling policy for agricultural, industrial and construction purpose, in addition to Rs.800-crore desalination plant sanctioned at Jodiya in Jamnagar district to produce 10-crore litre per day fresh water. He offered buttermilk and sukhdi to participants as goodwill gesture. He also reviewed progress at Olipor talav being built by Quarry Association.

malformation etc when they were admitted to the hospital. A significant number of these cases had been referred to the GAIMS hospital from other other hospitals,” stated the press release. GAIMS is jointly run by Adani Group and the Gujarat government on public private partnership mode. “We are satisfied to note that the committee has vindicated our stance in its report. We shall continue working with the government and attract doctors to this hospital. Our long-term objective is to offer quality medical service to people living in rural parts of Kutch,” Dr Gyaneshwar Rao, medical director of the GAIMS hospital, was quoted as saying in the release. Dr Vyas confirmed to The Indian Express that the committee had submitted its report to the government but refused to comment on the findings of their inquiry. Meanwhile, Dr Rao said their claim was based on a report the state government had forwarded to the hospital. “We received a report form the government enlisting findings of the inquiry committee and recommendations. Were there any deaths due to hospital’s issues was the point of everyone’s concern. They saw how patients

were treated and checked matters like what was diagnosis done, when diagnosis reports arrived, what were the protocols followed, was the neonatal ICU equipped with ventilator and other equipment here and there, was there a system of check and recheck etc. And they concluded that we were following all these protocols. The basic thing which came out of the report is that the treatment had been done as per guidelines and protocols,” he told The Indian Express. He said that the government had recommended that the staff in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) should get training and that the hospital should have more doctors. “We have accepted these recommendations and shot a letter to the government requesting to organise training programmes for our staff. Moreover, six more resident doctors joined our hospital 10 days ago. This, we believe, will take care of the second recommendation,” said Dr Rao. Jayanti Ravi, health commissioner of Gujarat, confirmed the “clean chit”. “Yes, they have said that there is no discrepancy in terms. They have also said that the babies who died were transported from longer distances. Most babies were out-born babies. They came with lower birth weight and this made them very fragile. In their general suggestion, they have also said that the capacity building should be done of the nurses and paramedical staff there which we feel a need of for all other hospitals in general (in the state) also. Because even if there is a child with very poor parameters, sometimes if they are really skilled, they can still try some way of salvaging the baby and somehow save the child,” she said.

Ahmedabad Showcases the Importance of Exercise and Healthy snacking, with Almonds

Ahmedabad : Almonds – commonly known as the king of nuts are not only versatile, crunchy and delicious but also offer natural goodness in every bite. They contain many essential nutrients, including protein and healthy fats, making them a nutrient-rich and convenient snack that can help keep you going throughout the day. Popular Chef Akshay Mohan Katti and renowned Nutritionist Komal Patel conducted a live cooking demonstration and a presentation on learnings from various nutrition studies on the health benefits of almonds. The interactive session also included a live demonstration by respected Fitness Expert Mandar Somani who spoke about the importance of following a regular exercise regime in addition to a healthy diet including almonds. Nutritionist Komal Patel said, “The increasing incidence of heart disease, obesity and other lifestylerelated issues calls for continuous focus on a healthy diet in today’s fast paced life. One simple step towards healthier eating is by incorporating healthy snacks like almonds in your daily diet. A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that a daily

snack of 42 grams of almonds, consumed as part of an overall healthy diet, improved a number of risk factors for heart disease. In addition to significantly improving Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL/bad) cholesterol, snacking on almonds also reduced central adiposity (belly fat) and waist circumference, all well-established heart disease risk factors .” Chef Akshay Mohan Katti, prepared simple yet delicious almond snack recipes in a matter of minutes, added, “Eating healthy does not mean you have to give up eating snacks. Smart snacking

is the key! A handful of almonds, for instance, may have satiating properties that promote feelings of fullness, which may keep hunger at bay between meals and steer you away from less healthy options. They are an ideal ‘smart snack’!” “Owing to our extremely busy lifestyle, exercise of any kind may take a back-seat for many people. However, not taking care of one’s health and fitness may lead to sedentary lifestyle related ailments. Hence, in addition to eating a balanced diet, it is imperative to do some type of exercise every day. If you do not

have the time to hit the gym, go for a run or walk then even simple exercises at home done right every day, can go a long way. Regular exercise plus healthy eating including snacking on fruits and nuts like almonds will make a healthy difference to your life”, said fitness expert Mandar Somani, who concluded the live demonstrations with a 15-minute exercise session. Through the session, chef Akshay Mohan Katti demonstrated a few delicious and healthy snacking recipes which are also easy and quick to make. This was followed by a workout session led by fitness expert Mandar Somani who showcased some basic exercises that can be easily done at home and, shared his views on incorporating small changes, like eating a handful of almonds every day and working out regularly, to help maintain a healthy life. Following the fitness session, nutritionist Komal Patel took to the stage to talk about the various health and nutritional benefits of eating almonds. She spoke about almonds’ antioxidant qualities (being rich in vitamin E), role in satiety, weight and diabetes management and maintaining a healthy heart as demonstrated by decades of published research.

Bhopal: One has to see an example of the state government's hurriedness in this poll year. The government is preparing to start work on the Metro project that was confined to files for the past 10 years, when state polls are scheduled this year. Now, since the project cannot be finished in such a short time, Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation has floated a tender for only pillars and slab over those (flyover) but not for bogies, track or stations! Its ground-breaking ceremony will be performed in August after issue of work order and before code of conduct for the state polls comes into force in September. An amount of

Rs277 crore involving just civil work will be executed on 6.225 km from Subhash Nagar to AIIMS that forms part of Metro route Line 2 (Karond to AIIMS: 14.99 km). However, experts said that tender terms have been kept weak so a company can make bid before the polls. The size of the tender has been kept small, so smaller companies can also participate. However, with poor resources, speed of work will suffer. Groundbreaking ceremony to be held in August before code of conduct comes into force How can design be done in one month? After work order is issued in August, the foremost job for the company will be to prepare

detailed design. However, Sunil Srivastava, former chief engineer, said that when it takes two-three months to design a bridge and grid separator, then Metro work should take at least 6 months. So, how can the work be done in one month? Sources said that work will begin after performing bhoomi pujan following design of a very small part. Its drawback will be that if there is a change in the next design of the route, it will have to be redone. Working speedily & not in hurry Civil tender was first floated even for Jaipur and Lucknow Metro projects. By the time this work begins, we will make preparations to float tenders for other works.
