Short News Difficult to say who will be next PM: Baba Ramdev

New Delhi: Yoga guru Swami Ramdev on Tuesday said that it was very difficult to say who would be the next Prime Minister of the country. “Now the political situation is very difficult. We cannot say who will be the next Prime Minister of country to lead it,” Ramdev told the reporters. Ramdev arrived at Madurai on Tuesday to attend the national executive meeting of Bharat Swabhiman meeting at Rameshwaram. He said that he is not going to support any person or oppose any party in the Lok Sabha elections due next year. “I am not focusing on politics,” he said. “Our aim is not a Hindu country but a spiritual country and a spiritual world. Through yoga and Vedic practices, we are making a divine, prosperous and spiritual India,” said Ramdev.

PM Modi is our main brand in Bihar: BJP MP Gopal Narayan Singh

New Delhi: Days after the BJP and its Bihar allies sealed a seat-sharing arrangement for the next year’s Lok Sabha elections, party MP Gopal Narayan Singh on Wednesday took a veiled jibe at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the “main brand” in the state. On December 23, BJP president Amit Shah announced that his party would contest on 17 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, while an equal number of seats will go to Janata Dal (United). Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan-led Lok Jantantrik Party (LJP) will contest on six seats. Responding to the same, Singh told ANI: “Like in all over India, in Bihar also, our main brand is Narendra Modi ji.” However, he also asserted that both BJP and JD(U) are equal partners and need to support each other, while adding that there should be no comparisons.

PM Modi’s ‘NTR remark’ forces Naidu to change TD stand

Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is following in the footsteps of Telangana state Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to embarrass Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in the ensuing elections. In the recent Telangana Assembly elections, which his party won, Chief Minister Rao branded Mr Naidu as anti-Telangana (Mr Naidu was not in favour of the separate state), thus playing with Telangana sentiments. Now Mr Modi is invoking founder president of the Telugu Desam, N.T. Rama Rao’s sentiment in the people of Andhra Pradesh to embarrass Mr Naidu in the ensuing elections. A couple of days ago in a video conference with BJP workers of Tamil Naidu, Mr Modi criticised Mr Naidu for betraying NTR by joining hands with the Congress from which NTR split to form the new party.

“15 Miners Struggling For Air, PM Poses For Cameras”, Rahul Tweets

GUWAHATI : Attempts to rescue at least 15 miners trapped since December 13 in a flooded “rat-hole” mine in Meghalaya have stopped because of the lack of equipment, mainly pumps to drain out water so divers can go in. The challenging rescue at the illegal mine has taken a political turn with Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attention. “15

miners have been struggling for air in a flooded coal mine for two weeks. Meanwhile, PM struts about on Bogibeel Bridge posing for cameras. His government refuses to organise high pressure pumps for the rescue. PM please save the miners,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted, referring to PM Modi launching India’s longest railroad bridge in neighbouring Assam on Tuesday.

NIA busts ISIS-inspired module, 10 people held New Delhi: The NIA on Wednesday busted a suspected ISIS-inspired terror group and arrested 10 suspects, who it said, were planning suicide attacks and serial blasts targeting politicians and government installations in Delhi and other parts of north India. A locallymade rocket launcher, material for suicide vests and 100 alarm clocks — to be used as timers — were recovered from the searches, said National Investigation Agency (NIA) inspector general Alok Mittal. The searches were carried

out in coordination with Special Cell of Delhi Police and ATS of Uttar Pradesh Police at six places in Jaffrabad, Seelampur in Delhi, and 11 places in Uttar Pradesh (six in Amroha, two in Lucknow, two in Hapur and one in Meerut), he said. The searches and the arrests, including

of a ‘mufti’ from Amroha, come a month before Republic Day celebrations on January 26 when security is heightened across India, particularly in the national capital. The probe agency rounded up 16 persons of the group ‘Harkat-ul-Harb-e Islam’, which loosely translates into ‘war for

the cause of Islam’, he said. Of the 16 detained, 10 were arrested by the NIA, while six are being interrogated. More arrests are likely, Mr Mittal said. Five were arrested from Amroha and five from Seelampur and Jaffrabad localities in north-east Delhi, he said. The “highlyradicalised module” of youths in the age group of 20 and 35 years is completely self-funded and no criminal antecedent of its members had surfaced so far in the investigation, he said. “The members were in advanced stage of preparation.

AP HC to start functioning from Jan. 1, Construction work still not over.

New Year Gift: High Court bifurcated for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Hyderabad: President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday notified the principal seat of the separate High Court for Andhra Pradesh at Amaravati, the state capital, taking yet another step towards the bifurcation of the court. The AP High Court, the 25th in the country, is to start functioning from January 1,

2019, along with the Telangana State High Court. However, the notification led to confusion as the construction work of the new High Court building at Nelapadu near Amaravati is yet to get final shape with four days to go for the commencement date. The allocation of employees is also yet to be completed.

The one-day strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) who claimed that the government wants banks to grow in size through this amalgamation. The strike has affected banking operations.

Forsecondtimeinaweek,10lakhbank employees go on nation-wide strike

New Delhi : Around 10 lakh employees from public, private and foreign banks on Wednesday took to the streets in protest against the proposed merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda. This is the second time in a week when bank employees have called for a nation-wide strike. Earlier in September, the Centre had announced merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda. The amalgamation would have a combined business of Rs. 14.82 trillion, emerging as the third largest bank after the State Bank of India (SBI) and HDFC Bank. The one-day strike has

been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), who claimed that the government wants banks to grow in size through this amalgamation. But even if all public sector banks are bundled into one, the merged entity cannot find a place among the top 10 globally. “This merger will see a large number of branches getting closed and customers will have to face hardships as already banks are burdened with the implementation of various government schemes such as Jan Dhan Yojana, Mudra, social security insurance, and Prime Minister’s housing scheme, among others,” the union said.

Andhra Pradesh-origin employees of the High Court will have to go to Amaravati, according to this notification. The President approved the allocation of judges, including Uttarakhand Chief Justice Justice Ramesh Ranganathan to the Andhra Pradesh High Court. The others are Justices C. Praveen Kumar, S.V. Bhatt,

Former MP Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Arun Yadav who had lost to outgoing chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Budhni assembly seat in the recently held polls, could manage to get a ministerial berth for his loyalist MLAs.

K Chandrasekhar Rao gives PM Narendra Modi winning mantra for 2019 elections Hyderabad: The meeting of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday in Delhi is significant because of the speculation that the formation of the Federal Front is to save Mr Modi’s BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. According to sources, the discussions were mostly about the political situation in the country and particularly in the two Telugu states. The Prime Minister showed an interest in the AP Assembly elections and the prospects of the TD headed by AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the YSR Congress headed by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. In their one hour and 15 minutes discussion, Mr Rao briefed the Prime Minister about the strategy adopted by him

in the Telangana Assembly elections which won him a huge victory. TRS sources said that there is no chance that the TRS and BJP will contest together in the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, but there are chances they will work together and have an understanding. Sources pointed out that Mr Rao made several suggestions and also gave advice to the Prime Minister about the strategy the NDA should

adopt in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections to retain power. The TRS supremo also discussed various issues pertaining to the state with the Prime Minister such as release of funds for 10 backward districts, setting up a separate High Court for Telangana, and an IIIT in Karimnagar district. The Prime Minister responded positively to the requests of the chief minister, the CMO said.

Modi’s speech exposes secret ties between BJP, BJD: Congress

New Delhi: With Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his party not figuring in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scathing speech against the Odisha government, the Congress Tuesday said the “secret ties” between the BJP and the BJD had been exposed. Spokesperson of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) P K

Deb, however, rejected the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee’s (OPCC) allegation, saying the party had all along “maintained equidistance from both the BJP and the Congress”. Modi, on his visit to Odisha on Monday, addressed a political rally in Khurda wheree he slammed the state government

without mentioning the chief minister or the BJD directly. OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik launched a scathing attack on Modi and Naveen Patnaik, accusing both of adopting an anti-farmer attitude and trying to fool the people by making false promises ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

A bridge over the river Brahmaputra

It has taken 21 years for the Bogibeel bridge, sanctioned by the then Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, in Assam to become operational. The 4.9km long rail-road bridge, facilitating connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, and costing ₹5,900 crore to build, is more than just an engineering marvel—it entails a double-line railway track on the lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper deck. For one, the Bogibeel bridge, only the third rail-road bridge across the river Brahmaputra, provides the much needed connectivity both within Assam and also to neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, India’s strategically frontier state flanking China. It is estimated to shave off nearly 700km of commute for people moving between Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts of Assam or beyond to Arunachal Pradesh. Moreover, it showcases a template for similar big-ticket projects that India so desperately needs to bridge its glaring infrastructure deficit. Second, it walks the talk on the policy of “Look East” first coined by the then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao in 1991. Projects of this nature could jump-start economic activity in the region and end its isolation. For long, the North-East of India, which is landlocked, has been neglected; recent migration trends have, however, begun to ensure greater integration. This neglect had understandably triggered a sense of alienation from rest of India—a key reason stoking extremist movements in the region. The ecosystem in the region’s neighbourhood, too, has undergone radical change in recent years. Particularly significant has been the end of the military regime in Myanmar. In a democratic framework, the prospects for actually delivering on the trilateral highway connecting Manipur to Thailand through India’s eastern neighbour is bright. Similarly, India has worked its diplomatic connections with Dhaka to get its nod to facilitate rail connectivity through Bangladesh between mainland India and Tripura. With increased intra-North-East connectivity, transnational linkages of this kind with the associated potential of trade open up unprecedented economic opportunity in the region. All the more because the centre of the world, following the dramatic rise of China, has shifted to the East. Third, the enhanced connectivity provides strategic succour to India. For long the region, due to neglect, has become a prisoner to Chinese whims.

Hollywood buzz Us is about undeniable truth that people are their own worst enemies: Jordan Peele

los angeles : Filmmaker-writer Jordan Peele has said that his next directorial, Us is not along the lines of his debut Get Out, which was a commentary on racism set in the horror genre. Peele, who became the first African-American writer to win the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his work on Get Out, said the new film revolves around the “undeniable truth” that people are their own “worst enemies”. The first trailer of the movie, starring Lupita Nyong’o and her Black Panther costar Winston Duke in the lead, dropped on Tuesday. The film centres on a family who is haunted by doppelganger versions of themselves. “It was very important for me to have a black family at the centre of a horror film. But it’s also important to note, unlike Get Out, Us is not about race. It is instead is about something that I feel has become an undeniable truth. And that is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies,” Peele said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The director also teased the film’s monster, which the trailer steered clear from. “I dedicated a lot of myself to create a new horror mythology and a new monster. I think that monsters and stories about monsters are one of our best ways of getting at deeper truths and facing our fears as a society,” he said.

Tim Southee rescues New Zealand with bat and ball after Suranga Lakmal blast

Christchurch : Tim Southee rescued New Zealand with the bat then dragged his side back into the match with the ball after Sri Lanka’s Suranga Lakmal’s career-best figures had threatened to dominate the first day of the second Test in Christchurch on Wednesday. Southee counterattacked with wicketkeeper BJ Watling to blast 68 from 65 balls and take New Zealand from the depths of despair on 64 for six after Lakmal had destroyed the top order on a green wicket at Hagley Oval. The 30-year-old Southee and Watling (46) combined for 108-runs as New Zealand were dismissed for 178 with Lakmal finishing with five for 54. First Test centurion Angelo Mathews was on 27 with Roshen Silva (15) as the visitors were 88 for four at stumps, with neither team

holding the advantage as both seek to win the two-match series with victory in Christchurch. The first Test in Wellington ended last week in a damp draw after virtually all of the final day’s play was washed out. The 31-year-old Lakmal, utilising the overcast,

cool conditions and green pitch, had reduced the hosts to 36 for four after Dinesh Chandimal had won the toss and wasted little time in choosing to field. Lakmal went to lunch having bowled 12 successive overs with figures of four for 18.

New Delhi: Investments in the Indian capital market through participatory notes climbed to Rs 79,247 crore in November after hitting a nine-and-a-half year low at the end of preceding month. P-notes are issued by registered foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to overseas investors who wish to be part of the Indian stock market without registering themselves directly. They, however, need to go through a due diligence process. According to Sebi data, the total value

Tata Tigor EV now available on rent in Pune not yet revealed what cities these will be, but expect metro cities to be a given. We also do not know if it will only be the Tigor EV that Tata will supply to Zoomcar or we can expect other electric vehicles from Tata to enter the Zoomcar inventory. The Tigor EV has a maximum range of 130km (as per MIDC cycle) and it takes 6 hours to charge from 0 to 80 per cent via a normal charger. So, if you plan to rent it, be mindful of its range and charging time. We think it’s a good opportunity to rent and live with the Tigor EV for those who would like to buy an electric car in the near future.

of P-note investments in Indian markets — equity, debt, and derivatives — rose to Rs 79,247 crore till November-end from Rs 66,587 crore at Octoberend. In September, the value of P-note investments was Rs 79,548 crore. As per the data, the fund inflow through P-notes in October this year was the lowest since March 2009, when the cumulative value of such investments stood at Rs 69,445 crore. Of the total investments made last month, P-note holdings in equities were at Rs 62,971

crore, while the remaining was in debt and derivatives markets. The quantum of FPI investments via P-notes rose to 2.5 per cent (month-on-month) during the period under review from 2.2 per cent in the preceding month. P-note investments were on a decline since June last year and hit an over eight-year low in September 2017. This drop in investment trend continued till 2018, however, rose slightly in August and again dropped in September and October. In July 2017, Sebi had notified stricter norms stipulating a fee of USD 1,000 on each instrument to check any misuse for channelising black money. It had also prohibited FPIs from issuing such notes where the underlying asset is a derivative, except those which are used for hedging purposes.

IT & startups expected to hire 5 lakh people in 2019: Pai

Hyderabad: India’s information technology (IT) services sector and startups together are expected to hire up to five lakh people in 2019 as demand for freshers is on the upswing, an industry veteran said on Wednesday. Former Chief Financial Officer of IT major Infosys Ltd, T V Mohandas Pai said entry-level packages in the industry went up by as much as 20 per cent in 2018, after stagnation in salaries for the past seven years.“Growth is coming back to the Indian IT services industry,” he told PTI, talking about industry highlights in 2018 and

prospects in the coming calendar year. Pai said 2018 saw “H1B visa situation getting tougher,” Indian companies focusing more on Japan and southeast Asia, massive expansion of captives and buy-backs by big companies. Hyderabad has become a hot destination, with many new age companies coming to the Telangana capital, thanks to good infrastructure, and “very good marketing” by KTR (K T Rama Rao, who served as IT Minister in the previous TRS government), according to him. He also said Indian companies were now trying

to expand in markets in Asia much more vigorously, particularly Japan which is “opening up” and southeast Asia. Reskilling of employees in IT services companies has redoubled, Pai said. “More than half the people have been reskilled in all the IT companies in India. Digital income is growing in double digits for all the companies. 2018 has been a good year”. Hiring has gone up, he said. “First time in seven years, hiring compensation (entry-level) has gone up by 20 per cent.

Rupee surges 19 paise against dollar in early trade

Mumbai: The rupee gained 19 paise against the US dollar on Wednesday to trade at 69.95 after increased selling of the US currency by exporters and banks. However, a lower opening of the domestic equity markets capped the rise, dealers said. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange, the rupee opened on a strong note at 69.79 a dollar against the previous close of 70.14. Further, the domestic unit surrendered early gains to quote at 69.95, showing a gain of 19 paise. Financial markets were closed Tuesday on account of Christmas. On Monday, the rupee had recovered 4 paise to close at 70.14 against

the American currency, following weak crude oil prices and the dollar’s losses in global markets due to political uncertainty in the US. Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex plunged over 350 points as investors turned jittery over political uncertainty in the US and fears of a global economic slowdown amid heavy selloff by foreign investors.

Revenue department most corrupt, police department comes next: Rupani

AHMEDABAD: Revenue department of the Gujarat government tops corruption in the state while the police department stood second, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said in a candid admission Wednesday. He also said it was a challenge to deal with the menace. “Revenue department is infamous for being the most corrupt department in the state while police department comes second. It is a challenge to find a way to deal with it”, the CM said while addressing a gathering here for distribution of 1,000 online NA (nonagricultural) certificates to land owners. Stating that “power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, Rupani said his government was trying to eliminate corruption by introducing a system wherein the people can

get permissions and certificates online. From November this year, state revenue department introduced a system wherein land owners can apply online to get their agricultural land

converted into non-agricultural land. “There were days when the government employees and officials used to shy away from taking bribe, partly on moral grounds and partly out of fear,

but today, there is a 360 degree change in that scenario”, the BJP leader said. Government employees now demand bribes without hesitation claiming that they have to take care of their family, Rupani underlined. He said the best way to prevent corruption is to minimise the human interaction by bringing in a system to issue various permits and certificates online. “It is necessary to see that people do not misuse their power. We want to implement a system to ensure greater transparency, something which appreciates honesty,” he said. In the next five years, we want to implement a system wherein people can get all permits or certificates, right from birth certificate to death certificate, by applying online, which will eliminate the need to visit offices physically, he said.

international Sri Lanka: 2018 will be remembered for worst political crisis in history

Colombo : The year 2018 would be etched in Sri Lanka’s history as the most turbulent one politically as the cash-strapped country saw an unprecedented power struggle between the president and the prime minister, causing much concern in major world capitals, including in New Delhi. President Maithripala Sirisena’s dramatic move to sack Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and install former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa in his place following differences over policy issues left the country without a functioning government for nearly

two months. Rajapaksa’s return to power drew concern in India that China would tighten its grip on the country. The veteran leader, who is credited for ending the brutal civil war with the LTTE in 2009, is under intense criticism for his decadelong authoritarian rule. However, a Supreme court verdict forced President Sirisena to reinstate United National Party (UNP) leader Wickremesinghe on December 16, ending Rajapaksa’s brief regime. During the political crisis, New Delhi sought to maintain a hands-off approach not wanting to be seen as taking sides.

Washington : A 7-year-old girl who talked to President Donald Trump on Christmas Eve still left out milk and cookies for Santa despite the president telling her it was “marginal” for a child of her age to still believe. Then again, Collman Lloyd of Lexington, South Carolina, says she had never heard the word “marginal” before. Collman had called the NORAD Tracks Santa program Monday night to check on Santa’s journey delivering toys. In an interview with the Post and Courier of Charleston,

she said the scientist who answered the NORAD phone asked her if she would like to speak to the president. Six minutes later, Trump was on the line. “Are you still a believer in Santa?” Trump asked. When she responded, “Yes, sir,” the president added, “Because at 7, that’s marginal, right?” Collman didn’t know what “marginal” meant and simply answered, “Yes, sir.” Trump closed by saying, “Well, you just enjoy yourself.” Trump’s chat with Collman was initially reported as being with a boy named Coleman.

Britain commissions review of Christian persecution worldwide

London : Britain has commissioned an independent review into the persecution of Christians to find practical steps to support followers of a religion that it said has been subject to a dramatic rise in violence worldwide. Some 215 million Christians worldwide faced persecution for their faith last year, it said, with Christian women and children particularly vulnerable and often subject to sexual violence as a result of their beliefs. Last year, on

average, 250 Christians were killed every month because of their faith, it said. “So often the persecution of Christians is a telling early warning sign of the persecution of every minority,” Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said in a statement on Wednesday. “Today I have asked the Bishop of Truro to look at how the British government can better respond to the plight of persecuted Christians around the world. “We can and must

do more.” The review will map Christian persecution in key countries across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, analyse British support and recommend a comprehensive policy response, the government said.
