News Brief Happy New Year: India warms up to 2015 Ten trends that will change Bollywood in the year ahead

Nothing defines sociocultural trends in India as films do. Over the years, our films and filmwatching habits have succinctly portrayed how the nation thinks and reacts, whether we are in a happy mood or an angry one. Its growth from a national pastime to an obsession that woos Indian and NRI audiences alike has made Bollywood the world’s biggest film industry. As 2015 approaches, the movers and shakers of Hindi cinema gear up to face the challenges that come with an audience getting more discerning than ever. The past few years have given the broad hint that this is the time for change in Hindi films — that the hackneyed, formulaic approach towards filmmaking will not do anymore. This has also been an exciting time for the crossover movie, with the genre letting a bright pool of budding filmmakers experiment with themes as never before.

BJP's enforcer Amit Shah warns Delhi unit to avoid indiscipline'

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah has cracked the whip on the factionridden party’s Delhi unit and warned its leaders against indulging in any in-fighting ahead of the Assembly polls. In a strong message to the Delhi BJP leaders, Shah said any “indiscipline” will be dealt with strictly. He has made it clear that there is no scope of any “lobbying” in the party. Referring to the distribution of tickets for the state elections, the party chief said the workers will have to work to ensure victory of the chosen candidates.

Mehbooba Meets Governor, Government asks BSF to give a Hints at Not Being Averse to BJP befitting reply to firing from Pakistan Invoking Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi, the PDP today appeared to be giving clear signals that it may not be averse to discussions on government formation with BJP, which welcomed the gesture. Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the PDP which has emerged as the single largest party with 28 MLAs in the 87-member Assembly, met Governor N N Vohra and later said the "decisive but divided" mandate in the state was both a challenge and opportunity for Prime Minister Modi who has been talking about development. The PDP chief met the Governor in response to his invitation for discussions on government formation while the leaders of the BJP, with 25 MLAs, will meet him tomorrow. "For NDA government, it is a big responsibility. For Modi, it is a big responsibility. Jammu and Kashmir has been the biggest challenge for any PM right from Nehru till

date," Mehbooba told reporters in apparent signals to the BJP that the two can discuss contentious issues that come in the way of the two parties coming together. Whatever formation is firmed up, it should respect the mandate of the people and have the principle of "reconciliation", she said, adding "till that is not taken along, forming any government will be useless". While talking about the opportunity provided by the mandate for both the NDA and Congress leadership, Mehbooba referred to Modi's "dream" of development and addressing the problem of unemployment. "But we

cannot have development without peaceful atmosphere on the ground," she said. She said "It (development) is not possible till Vajpayeeji's political process is taken forward." Mehbooba noted that for peace in Jammu and Kashmir, Vajpayee had "started a political process. Vajpayeeji agreed to a ceasefire with Pakistan. He had started unconditional dialogue with Hurriyat. He had started a dialogue with Pakistan when L K advani was the Deputy Prime Minister. We got generous economic package. UPA continued it for some time and then stopped it." Welcoming her remarks, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav

NEW DELHI The government today ordered the BSF to give a befitting reply to any unprovoked firing from Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir after a jawan was killed by the border guarding force of the neighbouring country. This was conveyed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh to Director General, Border Security Force DK Pathak when the latter briefed him about the prevailing situation in Jammu frontier where Pakistani Rangers today fired on a BSF patrol party along the international border killing a jawan and injuring another. "The Home Minister asked the DG, BSF to provide a suitable and appropriate reply for any such unprovoked firing," an official statement said. The DG BSF gave a detailed presentation to the Home Minister about the ceasefire violations by Pakistan Rangers in the Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Pathak informed that one BSF

jawan was killed in the unprovoked and premeditated Pakistani firing and the BSF retaliated effectively, in which three Pakistani Rangers were reportedly killed and some others injured. He informed that firing stopped in the evening at the request of Pakistani Rangers for ceasefire by showing the white flag. He said the firing has stopped since then and the situation is totally under control. Pakistani troops had on Sunday violated the ceasefire twice along the border in Arnia forward belt of Jammu and Hiranagar belt of Kathua district. On December 25, Pakistani Rangers indulged in unprovoked small arms firing in forward areas in Pansar border out post (BoP) belt of Hiranagar sub-sector in Kathua district. Over 550 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistan took place this year, the highest since the truce came into force in 2003, with the Indo-Pak

border witnessing the period which left 13 dead and worst such escalation people during August-October thousands displaced.

'Terrorists' wear skullcap in mock drill, sparks war of words Surat: Surat Police courted controversy when it made dummy terrorists wear skullcaps during an antiterror mock drill. The incident came under criticism today with the Congress mounting attack on the government claiming it an "administrative failure" and a Gujarat BJP's minority wing leader saying "terrorism should never be linked to a particular religion", even as police defended the action. The

drill was conducted in Dobari coastal region in Olpad town of Surat to check preparedness of the force is case of a terror attack. A video of the drill shows five policemen holding three dummy terrorists who are wearing skull caps. Gujarat BJP's Minority Cell President Mehboob Ali Sufi Baba strongly objected to the portrayal of "terrorists" in this manner, though Surat Police defended their action.

Modi the Great Moderniser ; & Great Revivalist Modi, the Great Moderniser, is certainly omnipresent. Right from the energetic election campaign, when he criss-crossed the country with his stirring mantra of “development”, to the 200-plus days as prime minister, when he has criss-crossed the world with his stirring mantra of a newly resurgent India, his has been an astonishing command performance in which he has hardly missed a beat. From the time of his swearing-in, when he invited leaders of Saarc countries, he has taken one bold initiative after another to befriend our smaller neighbours, at the same time wooing the “big” countries to invest in India. He has also made high-voltage pitches to NRIs in order to replicate the model of non-resident Chinese investing heavily in their mother country. In spite of his preoccupation with foreign affairs, Modi has not been short of “local” ideas like the Make in India and Swachh Bharat campaigns, the Jan Dhan Yojana scheme for financial inclusion and the unexpected emphasis on the protection of the girlchild in his Independence Day address. Add to that the sense of urgency shown in pushing through important legislation like insurance, land reform and coal allocation bills through ordinances, and you get a picture of a man in a hurry to move the nation forward. The second Narendra Modi, the Great Revivalist, is omniabsent, if there is such a word. Under this Modi’s invisible watch, the dark clouds that have been gathering all over the country grow more ominous day by day. Every morning’s newspaper seems to carry new evidence of this darkness: communal violence on Muslim and Christian minorities, churches attacked and burnt, the VHP in Chhattisgarh forcing missionary schools to instal Saraswati idols and insisting that principals be addressed as “pracharya” and teachers as “sir” instead of “father”. Christmas is sought to be turned into Good Governance Day, while the “ghar wapsi” and “love jihad” campaigns rear their ugly heads. Obscurantists like Dina Nath Batra now set the school curriculum in Gujarat and Haryana. An unknown historian with dubious credentials is made head of the country’s premier history body and begins by asserting that the Ramayana and the Mahabharata are historical texts.

Parental suicide attempt ups suicide risk in kids

A child is five times more likely to attempt suicide if he/she has a parent who has attempted suicide in the past, research has found. The researchers found a direct effect of a parent's suicide attempt on a child, even after they took into account a history of previous suicide attempt by the offspring and a familial transmission of mood disorder. The study not only confirmed that suicidal behaviour can run in families but also identified the pathways by which suicidal behaviour is transmitted in families. "Impulsive aggression was an important precursor of mood disorder and could be targeted in

interventions designed to prevent youth at high familial risk from making a suicide attempt," said David Brent from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pennsylvania. For the study, 701 children (aged 10 to 50 years) of 334 parents with mood disorders were followed for an average of nearly six years. The researchers noted that of the parents, 191 (57.2 percent) had made a suicide attempt. Of the 701 offspring, 44 (6.3 percent) had made a suicide attempt before participating in the study and 29 (4.1 percent) attempted suicide during the study follow-up.

Bigg Boss 8 : Diandra Soares re-enters the PK row: Congress slams Fadnavis house, reaches straight for Gautam Gulati for 'lack of control' over ministers

Model Diandra Soares raised quite a few eyebrows thanks to her bold and intimate scenes with fellow ‘Bigg Boss 8’ housemate Gautam Gulati. The duo shared an electrifying chemistry and were often seen kissing, at one point they even disappeared into the bathroom together. Unfortunately, Diandra was evicted from the show. She re-entered the house as part of the Freeze and Release task. As soon as she arrived in the house, she went to the corner of the living room, where she placed two letters in Gautam Gulati’s luggage. Bigg Boss released Gautam and the two

embraced each other, sharing an emotional moment. They later had coffee in the garden, where Diandra told Gautam that she wants him to win the show. She also clarified that she is not upset with him and approves of how he is playing the game. After Diandra was evicted from ‘Bigg Boss’, there were rumours surrounding

the model’s pregnancy as reason for her eviction. However, she set the record straight denying the pregnancy and said that she had some major health issues. On her eviction, Diandra also lashed out at Gautam Gulati, saying that he should stop being a mama’s boy. Gautam’s mother was apparently not in favour if their romance.

Mumbai Hitting out at Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for "lack of control" over his council of ministers as well as "lack of coordination" between them, Congress on Wednesday said the ministers were commenting on various issues just for the sake of publicity. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Manikrao Thakre's criticism came after Fadnavis on Wednesday ruled out any probe into Aamir Khan-starrer PK, a day after Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde ordered an inquiry into the film's "content" amidst

raging protests, and promised adequate protection for its smooth screening. "Earlier too, Shinde had declared that furlough to actor Sanjay Dutt would be probed, but soon Fadnavis clarified that Dutt, who is serving a jail term for illegally possessing arms, has

obtained furlough as per rules," Thakre said. "All such comments were being made just for publicity and the chief minister has no control over his council of ministers," Thakre alleged. "The government has nothing to offer to farmers and common man," he said.

Ajay Devgn, who was last seen in Prabhudeva’s ‘Action Jackson’, has started working on his next project. The next venture is tentatively titled ‘Shivaay’, which is alleged to be copied from ‘Sandalwood’ actor Upendra’s next ‘Shivam’. ‘Shivay’ will be directed and produced by Ajay. He will also be playing the central character in it. The latest we hear is that Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman is being considered for the lead role in the movie. The actress, who has been a part of movies like ‘Days of Thunder’, ‘Far And Away’, ‘Moulin Rouge!’, ‘The Hours’ and ‘Nine’, hasn’t signed on the dotted lines, but is in talks to be a part of the upcoming movie. The movie will also mark the Bollywood debut of Dilip Kumar’s grand-niece Sayesha. Ajay Devgn has time and again mentioned that his upcoming directorial venture ‘Shivaay’ will be one of the biggest budget movies of the country. The actor, reportedly, has got

the action director of ‘The

Fast and the Furious’ for it.

Wins and Losses for Women 2014

Privacy? No thanks! In 2014, celebs used social media to publicise their heartbreak

Mumbail Making Space for Women Women scientists in India are not on par with men for several reasons, however, for the first time, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) brought the role of its women scientists in ISRO to the forefront with a visual (see below) of women in science. We expect this to motivate the next generation of women to take to science. For the 21st-century spacewoman, gender is a subject often best ignored. After years of

training for their first space mission, the last thing Samantha Cristoforetti and Elana Serova want to dwell on is the fact they are women. Cristoforetti, Italy's first female astronaut, rocketed into orbit from Kazakhstan in November, bound for the International Space Station. There, she joined Russia's Serova, a rarity in her homeland's male-dominated cosmonaut corps. Cristoforetti is the first woman assigned to a lengthy space station mission by the European Space Agency.

This year, social media was not just a prominent platform for celebs to talk about their professional achievements or share funky images. It emerged as an important tool to make announcements about their relationship status too. Gone are the days when celebrities preferred to remain tightlipped about estranged relationships. In an era when everything can be used for publicity, our B-Town lot have learnt to be forthcoming about their private spats, and making public announcements about the same. Instead of keeping fans guessing about their relationship status, the likes of Pooja Bhatt, Karan Singh Grover, Kushal Tandon and Armaan Kohli announced their break-ups on Twitter. Bipasha Basu and Harman Baweja, meanwhile, talked of their changed relationship

dynamics in an interview. Public announcements, in turn, help them garner attention. TV actor Karan, who makes his B-Town debut opposite Bipasha in Alone next month, tweeted about his split with TV actress Jennifer Winget just a day before the launch of his film’s trailer. “For all those who are concerned, you might have heard that Jennifer and I have separated and will soon be getting divorced. I just wanted to confirm that it’s true,” he had

posted on Twitter. Armaan and Kushal, who shot to limelight with their antics on Bigg Boss 7, also announced their separation from their counterparts, Tanishaa Mukerji and Gauhar Khan, respectively, on Twitter. Pooja even explained why she chose Twitter to discuss her separation with Munish Makhija, 90’s popular Channel V host. “I chose this medium as I owe my fans and well-wishers the truth.

Surprise at Isro: Govt appoints Shailesh Nayak as ad hoc chairman CHENNAI In a surprise move, the government has appointed Shailesh Nayak, secretary in the ministry of earth sciences, as the ad-hoc chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro). Sources told TOI that the appointment is only for a month, after which he may be asked to continue or a new chairman may be brought in. K Radhakrishnan, who was given an extension earlier this year, retired on Wednesday. Nayak, 61, a geologist from MS University, Baroda, had a stint in Isro till 2000. He was earlier the director of Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois), Hyderabad. While Radhakrishnan has been on an extended tenure, the names of Satish

wrapping up the entire year in its Google doodle, which claims to reflect “2014 trending topics.” Let’s take a quick recap of 2014 and list the events that made an impression, remarkable enough to be revisited as the year fades out. The remarkable 2014 FIFA World Cup. Flappy Bird, the new smart phone game that kept the users glued to their cellphones. The fascinating tale of how the Mangalyaan conquered the red planet. The European spacecraft, Philae Lander and its adventurous journey to a comet. And of course the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that

Well, the Google doodle for New Year’s Eve 2014 has it all. As the cursor moves on the doodle, a flappy bird pops out of one of the

The ‘GOOGLE’ gets morphed into ‘2014’, with the ‘1’ transforming into the Mangalyaan off on its mission and the Philae Lander landing on the ‘O’, the comet! While the ‘2’ shivers with cold after taking the Ice Bucket Challenge.

NASA develops instrument to BSE measure moisture on Earth’s Soil

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have developed an instrument that is capable to measure moisture on Earth’s Soil with unquestionable accuracy. The instrument is named ‘Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP)’ and it will be launched on January 29, 2015. This is the fifth NASA Earth Science Mission launched within the last 12 months. This remote sensing instrument in space has three main parts; a powerful radiometer, a radar and the largest rotating mesh antenna ever deployed in space. The dish used in this instrument is 19.7 feet in

diameter. The sensor in the instrument will help us to procure the most accurate measurement of Earth’s soil moisture. The moisture in the Earth’s soil plays a crucial role in determining changes in environment, and understanding it in the most accurate manner will surely fetch benign benefits. Wendy Edelstein, the instrument manager of ‘Soil Moisture Active Passive’ said that launch of instrument demands careful engineering. Edelstein said that the team should ensure that the mesh doesn’t hang up on the supports and tear when it’s deploying. He also added that they have a very stable and robust

system now. The radar in the ‘Soil Moisture Active Passive’ makes use of the antenna to transmit

microwaves towards the earth, and receive the signals which will bounce back.

The dreams were turned to reality this year when the Swiss icon, along with hosts of other stars, including Novak Djokovic , came to India to play the International Premier

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) pushing for Boxing Day test at Melbourne against Australia As Boxing Day Tests are gaining limelight in test cricket, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive David White has claimed that they are pushing for a Melbourne Boxing Day Test against Australia. White claimed that there are 'more important things than money and the success of New Zealand's Boxing Day Test was measurable in other ways. He added that an ODI series or Twenty20 matches at bigger venues would have brought in more money to NZC's coffers but the 'feel-good factor' around test cricket was 'huge'. The preference has been for limited overs games over the holiday period, as the World Cup approaches near, and Tests to be played at the end of summer and even early autumn when the weather is more stable, Stuff.co.nz reported. More than 16,000 people turned up for Christchurch's first Test in eight years, which included a sell out of

nearly 8,000 on day one. But, White said that it was followed by tens of thousands more and with precious other sport on in the holiday period, the Test galvanised sport fans. He claimed that ODIs and T20 in the short term are best in terms of more revenue but there are 'more important things than money'. He added that it's about 'what's best for cricket' and they have an 'open mind'. White said it was too early to 'guarantee' future Boxing Day fixtures but the Future Tours Programme (FTP) did

allow 'flexibility'. Though the FTP is all but sorted, White is still hoping that New Zealand could appear in its first Melbourne Boxing Day test since 1987. He said that he cannot 'divulge' what's in the FTP but added that the 'harsh reality' is that Australia's Boxing Day test is 'attractive'. White said that the New Zealand's on-field performances are making them 'more attractive' and they would 'absolutely be pushing for a Boxing Day Test in Melbourne'

On Jain monks facing highway-side accidents Ahmedabad It is sad that Jain monks are hit and many times killed on highway by trucks or other heavy vehicles. The latest incident took place near Bhavnagar. A Jain monk was hit by a truck. In response to this, other Jain monks joined by Jain community members stopped traffic for an hour or so until police arrived there to control the situation. This sudden protest on highway caused problem to people who stuck in traffic. Later, a meeting of Jain community was held in Rajkot on this issue. A decision to make representation before the government was taken in this meeting. There was a feeling that there could be some conspiracy behind these accidents. One option presented in the meeting was possible safety cover to Jain monks on journey. It is very sad that Jain monks suffer accidents on highways while walking from one village to other village. Jain community has suffered huge loss by

losing some of the finest monks like Jambuvijayji due to such accidents. But at the same time, Jain community needs to understand that highway is after-all highway. It is built for heavy vehicles that move in extreme speed. Highways are not for walking. Though walking is allowed on highway, and it is legal right, the practical fact is that it is very risky and dangerous. On many stretch, for a driver of heavy vehicle, it’s just not predictable that somebody could be walking on highway side. The issue, if we look at in a larger perspective is that the Jain monks don’t use vehicles. They just walk, mostly without shoes. At the most, they would use

push cart. This is their tradition and one needs to give respect to it and take care of it. Now though they have sticked to this centuries old tradition – which is not bad, and noone can have objection to it – the world outside their community has changed so much. The vehicles are heavier and more powerful, traffic is increasing, roads are smoother, speed levels are much higher, walking on highway path is increasingly riskier. Discussions on conspiracy theories are pointless. When thousands of Jain monks are walking any-day on highways, some incidents of accidents in any year are unfortunately bound to happen due to reasons narrated above.

VHP on revival path in Gujarat Ahmedabad Nationwide debates on religious conversation and film PK has triggered revival of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal in Gujarat.
