The popular leader of our times

Narendra Modi is the most talented politician of our times, not just in India but also farther afield. It is not easy to come up with names of elected leaders who are so popular. I can think of Vladimir Putin in Russia and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey, who are somewhat similar. I do not understand the politics of those nations to any great extent, but I do know that the support enjoyed by them is similar to Mr Modi’s in one sense. The individual leader in all three instances is more popular than the party because he has broadened the traditional base. Mr Modi regularly polls an approval rating of over 70 per cent. I recognise that such polls are inaccurate and to a large extent unscientific but even so the consistency with which he achieves this is remarkable given that his party has only ever got 31 per cent of the all-India vote at its peak, which was in 2014. Anecdotal evidence, meaning the people I speak to about this, also confirms that he is a popular leader. If we examine the case of Mr Modi, we can discern the following types of people who are attracted to him and his style of politics. The most important is his base of upper caste, middle class and urban voters. The BJP sweep of the cities in Gujarat confirms this analysis: even when the party’s policies are failing in the rural and semirural areas, it is this base that remains firmly behind the BJP, and to a larger extent, Mr Modi personally. The reasons for this support are several. The middle class is convinced that this country is run poorly and needs to be straightened out through radical actions. The idea of a strongman coming in to do this has always found appeal in this section, and as someone who is almost 50 years old I can report that this has been the case for at least three decades. This perspective of course is reductionist and simplistic, but I don’t want to discuss that today. The anti-reservations stance of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and its Brahminised view of culture are in alignment with how this group broadly sees the world around them. This community is highly nationalistic (they are the people who flock to the events that Mr Modi holds with the Indian immigrants when he’s abroad), which fits in with the posture of the BJP. The powerful nationalism means that they are almost totally brainwashed on the issues of Pakistan and China. Fortunately, this missing ability to engage with complexity also falls into place with the BJP’s outlook. Economically, this is the community that depends on high GDP growth, an expansion of white-collar jobs, investments in modern infrastructure (example: bullet train over rural roads and airports over state transport buses). It is not easy to generalise on the matter of minority rights. However, while accepting that the dislike of minorities is something all South Asian communities have, an excess of violence will trouble this community, if only because it clashes with their perceptions about India.

Michelle Williams on sexual misconduct allegations: Something big is happening The discussion of sexual predators in Hollywood has come a long way and this year it has broken all barriers as women came forward to tell what they have been through in their lives. Many believe that there are changes happening internally in the industry. Hollywood actor Michelle Williams, who will be next seen in All the Money in the World, also feels that “something big is happening” in Hollywood following the string of sexual misconduct allegations, reports Contactmusic.com. While talking to a leading US publication, Williams said, “Every day seemed like such a long time. I’m checking my phone: what else is going on? It felt like the sky kept falling. Listen, it’s nothing compared to what people are going through who are the true victims of this situation, but it did put our world into constant flux. This is unmanageable, and we can’t take it anymore.” She further noted, “So I think that’s why all this is happening now. And so, if that’s what it took, then I’ll be grateful for it. For it feels like something big is happening.” The Manchester by the Sea star also shared she understood why some victims might feel “revictimised” after all the allegations surfaced.

to hear newer voices and listen to unfamiliar points of view with mutual respect, equanimity and grace.” The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has suggested that the name of the film may be changed from ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmavat’, as per the “attributed material/creative source”. The film borrows from the poem Padmavat, written by 16th-century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The filmmakers have also been asked to add a disclaimer stating that the film does not glorify the banned practice of Sati, and to make changes to Ghoomar song in keeping with the fact that Deepika Padukone plays a Rajput princess. Rajput groups had protested saying a princess of their community would never dance in front of men who were strangers.

Michelle previously revealed she thought Hollywood was “sending a message to predators” by recasting Spacey in All the Money in the World after sexual misconduct allegations were made against him.

There are no two ways about it,” Kohli said after India held their first preparations for the first Test at Newlands in Cape

gns News , Cape Town : In six days time, India will play South Africa for the first Test at Cape Town. Before this game, India have won only two Tests in South Africa. Town. “We come here wanting to express ourselves, believing in our abilities and knowing we have the right balance to win Test matches under any conditions we play under. “This is an opportunity for us to play good cricket. We aren’t thinking about the history of past series in South Africa but concentrating on winning each session and executing our strategy well. I think international cricket is all about staying in the present and

trying to do things better than your opposition at all times. “If we didn’t have that mindset, there would be no point getting on to the flight to come here,” Kohli told reporters. The first Test begins on Friday and India will look to begin on a winning note. They have won nine Test series in a row since August 2015 but majority of them were played at home. Also, they did not face South Africa in South Africa.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp backs Mohamed Salah to maintain scoring form

New Delhi: Vidarbha on Sunday inched closer to a maiden Ranji Trophy title by grabbing a commanding 233run lead against a Delhi side that looked defeated for better part of the day, as little-known Akshay Wadkar chose first-class cricket’s biggest stage to compile his maiden century. Playing in his fifth match of first season, wicketkeeper Wadkar rose to the occasion and remained unbeaten on 133 in a team total of 528 for seven at stumps on the third day in Indore. In the final session, Siddhesh Neral entertained the crowd with 56 off 92 deliveries, while hitting four boundaries and as many sixes. Delhi were bowled out for 295 in their first innings. Aditya Sarwate, with whom Wadkar stitched a decisive 169-run partnership for the seventh wicket, contributed a handsome 79 off 154 balls at the Holkar Stadium that witnessed a decent turnout. Vidarbha, who resumed their innings at overnight 206 for four, showed the intent from the beginning and capitalised on Delhi’s lack of discretion and enthusiasm. The seven-time winners looked shoddy on the field, dropped catches, including a crucial one off the blade of seasoned Wasim Jaffer (78) at the start of day.

London : Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp is confident Mohamed Salah can maintain his excellent goalscoring form after the Egyptian forward netted both goals in a 2-1 win over Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday. The 25-year-old, signed from Roma in the summer, has now equalled Roger Hunt’s club record from 1960/61 of having scored 23 goals in all competitions before the turn of the year. Salah is the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League this season with 17,

one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, and has added another six in the Champions League. “He can keep this standard, for sure,” Klopp told a news conference. “He’s young, improving. It’s not only about scoring goals; he’s so important for us. “He knows and I know he couldn’t score so many without the fantastic support from the other boys. I think he can keep the standard, but that’s normal.” Klopp substituted Salah with seven minutes left against Leicester and said that his top scorer had picked up an

Zlatan Ibrahimovic sidelined for a month with knee injury

gns News , New Delhi: Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be sidelined for a month with a knee injury, manager Jose Mourinho said. The former Sweden international was not in Saturday’s squad as Mourinho’s men were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Southampton at Old Trafford — United’s third successive draw. Ibrahimovic was re-signed by United in the summer, having departed the club at the end of last season, and overcame meniscus and cruciate ligament damage to return to action in late November. However, Mourinho, who saw Romelu Lukaku carried off on a stretcher during Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Southampton, said Ibrahimovic is set for another injury layoff. “We lost Ibrahimovic for a month, he stops his run to recovery, he has been running for many months, what he needs is to play,” Mourinho said.

Liverpool visit Burnley on New Year’s Day. “He was limping – that’s never a good sign,” Klopp said. “We’ll see what he can do for the next game.” Liverpool fell behind to Jamie Vardy’s third-minute opener against Leicester but rallied well and could have won by a far greater margin. The result moved them on to 41 points and consolidated fourth position in the table. “Everybody reacted the right way,” Klopp said. “It was one of the best games we’ve played so far (this season).

Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku carried off on a stretcher following head injury gns News , New Delhi: Manchester United’s leading scorer Romelu Lukaku was carried off on a stretcher in the first half of his side’s 0-0 draw at home to Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday with an apparent head injury. The Belgium international, a 75-millionpound ($101 million) signing from Everton in July, collapsed after banging his head against Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt in an aerial challenge early in the game and immediately received medical attention. He appeared unable to move as he lay on the pitch and after a few minutes was taken off on a stretcher in the 14th minute wearing an oxygen mask. He was replaced by England striker Marcus Rashford. Lukaku, 24, has scored 15 goals in all competitions for United this season.

Abu Dhabi: Serena Williams was pleased to get back on court despite losing what was her first match in almost a year, against Jelena Ostapenko, at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. It was Williams’ first outing since winning her 23rd Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open in January, while pregnant, before taking time out to have the baby. But she failed to fully rediscover her rhythm and quickly dropped the first set 6-2 to the Latvian Ostapenko, the French Open champion. The 36-year-old American roared back to win the second set 6-3 before losing the decisive tiebreak 10-5 in the exhibition match. Williams admitted her mind wandered to her child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., during the match. “Motherhood is phenomenal. I was a little worried out there and I looked at my camp and I was like ‘Is Olympia ok?’. But it’s really good,” she said in her on-court interview. ”I‘m excited, it’s good to be back on the court. This was such a good time for me. “It’s my first time playing in Abu Dhabi so thank you guys for the support. First matches back are always super incredibly hard, especially after having a baby but it was great, I’m glad I could do it here.” Williams has registered for the Australian Open, which begins on January 15 at Melbourne Park but said that she is still unsure about her participation in the event. “I don’t know if I am totally ready to come back on the Tour yet. I know that when I come back I definitely want to be competing for championships,” she said, refusing to commit yet to the Australian Open, which starts in a little over two weeks.

Bangladesh cricketer Sabbir Rahman under investigation for assaulting fan? Dhaka: Bangladesh cricketer Sabbor Rahman could be in major trouble after he was said to have assaulted a fan

during a first-class match in Rajshahi last week. The case is being currently investigated, and could mean further trouble for the Bangladeshi. According to an ESPNcricinfo report, Sabbir, who represents Rajshahi Division in the

domestic league, had taken permission from the on-field umpires to leave the field and went behind the sight screen to physically assault the fan. The incident happened on Day 2 of a National Cricket League tier 2 match between Rajshahi Division and Dhaka Metropolis on December 21. While the encounter between the two sides were drawn, Sabbir had a match to forget as he was dismissed for a duck in the only innings which Rajshahi batted and also failed to take a wicket. The 26-year-old was part of the Bangladesh team which toured South Africa in October.

gns News , New Delhi: Recovering from an ankle injury, star India shuttler Saina Nehwal said she will look to get back to her full fitness during the three weeks break after the India Open next month. “I had this ankle injury before this tournament, so I am playing a match after three weeks, there was this ankle inflammation. In the morning when I was practicing there was some pain. Ankle injury is tough because the lunges depend on the ankles,” Saina said. “I will get more time, 2-3 weeks after India open. After

the World Championship there was not enough time when I joined Gopi sir, there were too many tournaments and after that I had this injury. It is still not upto the mark. There is a lot of speed still required, I need to be in best shape to play against the best,” she added. The 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist shuttler said she was doing the training part but would need to strengthen herself while playing. “You need to play with this, you can’t rest and heal it. So, I’ll need more time to get full training and play against

top players,” she told reporters after pulling off a comeback win over Michelle Li in the PBL last night. Asked when did she get the injury, Saina said: “I got it in September end or October start. It is an overuse injury. I was close to qualifying for Dubai Supers Series. “It was not that I couldn’t play. But there comes a time when the muscle stops taking the load and it goes to the join and I was feeling the plain. I felt a lot of pain in November end. I was not able to give rest, so I need time.”

243 notices served for fire safety violations gns News , VADODARA: The Banyan City has witnessed major fires in 2017 like at the collector office and at Schaefflar India at Maneja, and it may not be a surprise if an incident like the one at Kamala Mills Compound in Mumbai is repeated here. Vadodara Fire and Emergency Services (VFES) this year has served notices to 243 premises owner for violation of fire safety norms. According to sources in VFES, 80% of the 243 premises that were served notices were commercial properties where daily footfall was in thousands. “These notices are served and a fine is slapped when the premises owner apply for renewal of the NOC (no objection certificate). While a few buildings do follow the norms like having fire extinguishers and the smoke detection and extinguishing systems, but many of them have outdated or non-functional systems,” said a fire official. Interestingly, the fire compliance ratio in the city was quite low. “Only 15% premises owner who have been served notice make changes in the fire safety systems,” the official said. Another senior fire official said that when the norms are not complied even after the notice they serve another notice to disconnect electricity and water connections of the building. But such extreme steps have hardly been taken. “Legally, the water and electricity are essential services and these can be disconnected when the fine due is 30% of the building’s value and the fine we slap is not that high compared to high value of the commercial buildings. So we do not snap water and electricity connections,” the fire official said.

Gujarat: Birdwatchers, officials puzzled as lesser flamingos delay arrival

gns News , Rajkot : With winter at its peak, the Chhaya Rann, a wetland in Porbandar is still waiting for the lesser flamingos, its annual visitors. While local birdwatchers are intrigued by the delay in arrival, forest officials expect the birds to arrive in some weeks. Chhaya Rann is a wasteland falling in the limits of Porbandar municipality and adjoining Chhaya municipality. Runoff and sewage water from Porbandar collecting in the area turn Chhaya into a wetland which attracts birds like the lesser flamingos. The lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor) have been categorised as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).According to local birdwatchers, flamingos started roosting in the wetland during the mid-1960s and have been visiting the area almost every year since. “Normally, they start landing in October and by December end, we usually see thousands of lesser flamingos roosting here. Normally, they occupy this wetland till summer end,” says Bharat Rughani, a local birdwatcher. This year however, there has been a disruption in the cycle, with only a few hundred birds seen in the wetland.

Speaking to mediapersons Saturday, Nitin Patel denied any plans to quit the BJP, but admitted he had grievances which he had conveyed to the party high command. He said he felt the party would take appropriate action.

AHMEDABAD: The implementation of RERA and GST has led to a positive change in the Indian real estate sector. These reforms foster transparency in communication and an assurance of delivery, and by doing so they not only build domestic consumer confidence but also create an environment that is more conducive to foreign investment. Owing to its economic growth and rapidly developing infrastructure, Pune’s real estate market has been performing much better than many other major cities. Included in the ‘100 Smart Cities’ list, Pune is gaining increased importance on the back of the implied infrastructure. Outlook for 2018 Pune’s residential property market will remain positive, and areas that offer better affordability and returns on investment will pick up. IT/ITeS continues to be the key demand driver for residential real estate in Pune, and the Kharadi micro market is a strong example of this. Technology will play a key role as residential developers explore newer ways to optimize space utilization within their projects. The proposed plan for the development of Pune Metro will have an effect on the prominent areas on the city’s CBD belt along with areas of Hinjewadi, Aundh, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kharadi and Viman Nagar.
