7 dead in Jammu, dozen houses damaged as rains wreak havoc in Valley

Jammu: Three persons, including a woman, were killed and nearly a dozen houses damaged in rain-related incidents in different districts of the Jammu region, officials said on Saturday. Harbans Lal, 45, was washed away by flash floods in a stream near his house at Natulphal village of Khour in the Akhnoor sector here this afternoon, they said. The officials said Lal

was crossing the stream when a sudden surge in the water level due to incessant rains caught him. The body of the deceased was recovered and handed over to his family, they said. A woman, identified as Jameela, was killed when a tree got uprooted due to heavy rains and fell on her temporary shelter at Kalamsatherdhar village of Kishtwar district, the officials said. Jameela’s daughter was

also injured in the incident and was shifted to a hospital, they said. A 22-year-old man, Anzar Ahmad, was also washed away by flash floods in a stream at the Surankote area of Poonch district on Friday and his body was recovered, the officials said. Nearly a dozen ‘kacha’ houses were also damaged, while 28 cattle were perished in the heavy rains in different districts, especially in the

Happy with receipts, govt hints at GST cut

NEW DELHI: The government indicated on Saturday that it may reduce goods and services tax rates in the coming months as collections are expected to top the budgeted estimate by Rs 1 lakh crore. “If revenues increase, the government will want to pass on the benefit to consumers. Higher

revenues will result in a lower fiscal deficit, more investment in infrastructure and create elbow room to cut rates,” Piyush Goyal, who is officiating as finance minister, said. He said with the system stabilising, GST is helping boost growth as multiple taxes and cesses have been removed and collections this year

could reach Rs 13 lakh crore, compared to the estimated mop-up of around Rs 12 lakh crore for the full financial year. “Once data from e-way bills comes, there will be some improvement and scope for some relief,” he added. Since its launch last July, the government has lowered rates on around 320 items.

areas in the Chinab Valley over the past three days. Several footbridges, including two in Udhampur district, were also washed away by the strong currents as most of the water bodies across the region are flooded. Six men, who got trapped in the middle of the Tawi river near Pukroo here on Friday night due to sudden rise in the water, were rescued, the officials said.

Vijay Mallya summoned by PMLA court on August 27 under new Fugitive Ordinance

How can US ‘interfere’ in India’s sovereignty, asks Owaisi

New Delhi : Days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) moved a special court to declare him a fugitive economic offender, a special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court on Saturday summoned embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya on August 27 under the recently promulgated Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, 2018. Special

Hyderabad : Taking exception to the US telling India to end oil imports from Iran, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has sought to know how America could “interfere” in issues involving India’s sovereignty. “Who is he to tell India? Who are you to say take (oil) from here, from there? Would the US president say what to buy and from where by interfering in India’s sovereignty?” he asked while addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday. The US has told India and other countries this week to cut oil imports from Iran to “zero” by November 4 or face sanctions, making

judge M S Azmi, who is dealing with the PMLA cases, issued the notice to Mallya after taking cognisance of the second ED charge sheet filed against him recently and the subsequent application by it on June 22 seeking a fugitive economic offenders tag. Last week, the agency had filed an application before a special court in Mumbai.

it clear that there would be no waivers to anyone. Iran is India’s third-largest oil supplier behind Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Iran supplied 18.4 million tonnes of crude oil during April 2017 and January 2018 (first 10 months of 201718 fiscal). Stating that Europe, Russia and China have now turned against America, Owaisi, Lok Sabha member from Hyderabad, said India should also firm up its policy. Criticising the NDA government at the Centre, he said the supporters of Modi had said oil prices would come down (to Rs 40 per litre) if he became Prime Minister, but the price has now gone up to Rs 82.

Smashing it with sartorial strokes

Rule-breakers have the most fun on tennis courts. Just ask American champions Venus and Serena Williams, who are known for their creative uniforms as much as their dexterity with the racket. From wearing trench coats and catsuits to lingerie-inspired ensembles, the Williams sisters are among a non-conformist set of tennis players whose offbeat style choices have led to many an exchange of ideas between sports and fashion over the years. But taking fashion risks on other tennis courts is one thing, and doing so at Wimbledon entirely another. The Championship has one of the strictest dress codes in the game, one that continues long after other Grand Slams relaxed their rules. The US Open, for instance, has allowed colourful clothing since 1972, but Wimbledon has only moved from a mostly white to an all-white rule. There is an emphasis on modesty too, and even as hemlines grow shorter and designs on the court become more experimental, deviations from the rule can be controversial. Venus, forever on the edge when it comes to Wimbledon whites, had to swap outfits mid-match in 2017 after her pink bra was exposed during the game. In 2008, Russian Maria Sharapova’s tuxedo-inspired uniform, comprising a top and shorts, had competitor Alla Kudryavtseva saying she had enjoyed beating her— mostly because she didn’t like the outfit (and she wasn’t the only one). Sartorial subversion has existed in tennis, specifically on the Wimbledon courts, since the early 20th century, when Suzanne Lenglen wore a sleeveless pleated dress on court. American tennis player Gussie Moran, sometimes known as “Gorgeous Gussie”, is remembered more for knickers flashing under her dress as she took the court in 1949, while compatriot Anne White became famous, or, rather, notorious, for playing in a white catsuit in 1985. Sports fashion controversies tend to be dominated by women, but men too have had their small share of rule-breaking. Swiss Grand Slam champion Roger Federer arrived on the Wimbledon court in 2009 with gold trimmings, especially on his bag, outshining the whites. While sports aren’t traditionally associated with fashion, recent decades have transformed athletes into legitimate style icons. Serena is a two-time American Vogue cover girl and will soon launch a hotly anticipated beauty brand, while others such as Federer and Spanish powerhouse Rafael Nadal, whose popularity is no longer limited to sportswear, have multimillion-dollar deals with Nike. Audiences, on and off the courts, idolize these players and aspire to dress like them.

When Luv Ranjan comes calling

steamed earlier this year with the ‘Padmavat. The actress has not only won the hearts of the audience but also the best reviews for his great portrayal of Queen Padmini. Let’s talk about success, Deepika said, “If a large proportion of people about do not know what it is, so telling about this issue, I will not waste my energy. Race 3 all set to cross Rs 300 crore mark worldwide Race 3 movie box office collection: The Salman Khan film has been dominating the B.O. like nobody’s business. While Race 3 is all set to cross the landmark of Rs 300 crore worldwide, the action drama has, reportedly, minted over Rs 170 crores at the domestic B.O.

New Delhi : Luv Ranjan, who’s managed to rope in Ranbir Kapoor and Ajay Devgn for his next project, reportedly has his sights set on another A-lister. We hear that he’s keen on getting Alia Bhatt on board as well. And unsurprisingly, Ranbir’s in agreement. Not long ago, Shraddha Kapoor, who was in Mumbai for the shooting of Batti Gul Meter Chalu, made a quick stop at Ajay Devgn’s office in an attempt to be cast in the film. But it seems her efforts have been in vain, and the role has been offered to Alia. “Most film scripts are written with certain stars in mind. Having said that, directors also have a vision of who they want to cast. Today, Alia is a big star. If you want to cast her, you need to sign her around the same time as the male stars. If the role is not that important, it is highly unlikely that Alia will sign on the dotted line, even if it means losing out on quality time with beau Ranbir,” says a source. Meanwhile, rumours are doing the rounds that Alia plans to take time off work to fly to Paris and spend time with Ranbir’s family from July 6 to 9 for Neetu Singh’s birthday. Ranbir has also taken a week off after the release of his film Sanju to be with his mother in the French capital.

New Delhi : Bollywood star Salman Khan’s latest offering Race 3 has been dominating the box office like nobody’s business. While the film is all set to cross the landmark of Rs 300 crore worldwide after running in cinemas for two weeks, the action drama, reportedly, minted over Rs 170 crores at the domestic BO. The movie has become the second-most commercially successful movie in 2018 after Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s Padmaavat. The Remo D’Souza directorial has further collected Rs 200 crore,

thanks to satellite, digital, music and ancillary rights. For Salman, Race 3, which was co-produced and distributed by his production company Salman Khan Films, has turned out to be one of the biggest earners of his career. Race 3 has taken the Race franchise to new heights of success, thanks to the mind-boggling box office figures. The cast is obviously ecstatic with the movie’s success. The film also marks the comeback of 90s star Bobby Deol to the big screen, who had earlier commented

on the film’s success saying, ” I am very happy that people have appreciated my work and appreciated everyone’s work. We keep getting criticism. It matters when the film is really bad and if this was so bad, it wouldn’t have worked commercially.” Race 3 stars Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Jacqueline Fernandez, Daisy Shah and Saqib Saleem in pivotal roles. The movie has been directed by choreographer-turned-director Remo D’Souza.

India crowned champions at Kabaddi Masters, beat Iran 44-26.

Mumbai: India asserted their supremacy in Kabaddi yet again as they annihilated Iran 44-26 in the Kabaddi masters final. Led by their skipper Ajay Thakur who scored nine points, India were better in top from the first minute to the last. Surheet Singh scored six tackle points and marshaled the defence superbly. Iran were let down by their defence as they struggled to contain Indian raiders. There were fleeting chances for Iran to make a comeback but India proved too good

for them on the night. Monu Goyat chipped in with crucial raid points and Mohit Chhillar was a rock at the back for India. For Iran, Mohammed Maghsodlou had a quiet night as did Mohammed Nabibbaksh. Ajay Thakur and Monu Goyat scored two raid points as India led 2-0 in the third minute. Mohammed Nabibbaksh opened Iran’s account in the fourth minute with a successful raid. After five minutes India led 6-2 and reduced Iran to just two men on the mat.

No easy path for Indians at Malaysia Open Mumbai: Thrice, Kento Momota has denied Kidambi Srikanth a shot at progressing in the All England. The Japanese is expected to make life miserable for everyone starting with the Asian Games and going right upto the Olympics at home. More immediately though, Srikanth runs into the highly-rated lefthander at Malaysia in the semifinals on Saturday. Momota is currently on a 17-match streak in which he has twice swatted the Olympic champion Chen Long, waved away World No.1 Viktor Axelsen, avenged a loss to Chou Tien Chen of Taipei with two straight wins, and pinned down Anthony Ginting by changing his game midway so drastically that the Indonesian didn’t know what hit him in the opener

at Bukit Jalil. Srikanth, who is trying to recapture the silken form that gave him a bunch of titles around same time last year, trails the Japanese 3-5 through his career, but would want to set the tone for the season where he’ll run into Momota invariably, sooner or later. The Japanese literally has two different games – an all-out attack and a persevering grind – both of which he switches between easily. That, combined with his chameleon speed and the southpaw angles, will be something Srikanth will come up against routinely in the coming two years. Srikanth who made the World No.1 earlier this year, has slipped a tad to No 7, but has put his head down in training while coming into Malaysia.

India vs Ireland: I’m having a headache about whom to pick, says Virat Kohli

Mumbai: India thrashed Ireland once again on Friday by 143 runs to clinch the T20I series 2-0. KL Rahul (70) and Suresh Raina’s (69) blitz with the willow along with the familiar dismantling by the wrist spinners gave India it’s the biggest victory (in terms of runs) in the second T20I at Malahide. Chasing 219, Ireland were dismissed for a paltry 70 as Kuldeep Yadav (3/16) and Yuzvendra Chahal (3/21) once again ran riot while seamers Umesh Yadav and Siddarth Kaul bagged two wickets apiece. For skipper Virat Kohli it was just the kind of the start he was hoping for before heading off to the English coast. Acknowledging

that the impressive performance by the bench has given him a happy headache, Kohli maintained that it points towards a great period in Indian cricket. Speaking at the post-match presentation the Indian captain said, “A balanced performance from all departments in both the games. I’m having a headache now about whom to pick, they’ve all done so well with the bat, but it’s a good problem to have. It’s a great phase for Indian cricket, and I’m happy the youngsters are doing well and taking their chances with both hands. Our bench-strength has shown as well, with the guys shining through.

India to meet old-rivals Iran in final of Kabaddi masters For the third time in four years, India and Iran will meet in the final of a high-profile international competition.

Dubai : An inch from the midline, Amirhossein Maleki stopped to celebrate. Rather, showboat. The Iran captain made the most of the chaos in the Pakistan defence, got a touch and was at the middle of the court unopposed. Maleki, a strapping six-footer paused, flexed both his biceps, then walked back to his own half. The brief moment of bravado was meant more for the Indian team, whom they will face off against in the final of the

Kabaddi Masters Dubai on Sunday. For the third time in four years, India and Iran will meet in the final of a high-profile international competition. Iran was the first to get to the final, rolling over a steadily deflating Pakistan team by a 19-point margin in a 40-21 win. On paper it was an easy victory, but it meant a great deal for Iran who were upset by Pakistan in the Asian Championship semi-final in November. Later, India skipper

Ajay Thakur led his team to a onesided 36-20 win against South Korea to set up a repeat of the 2016 World Cup final in Ahmedabad that the hosts came from behind to win. At the Al Wasl Indoor Stadium, both teams have unveiled fresh talent. India has done away with the elder guard that had the likes of veteran raiders Anup Kumar and Jasvir Singh. The newcomers are among kabaddi’s first ever crorepatis (from the recent Pro Kabaddi League

Modi, however, said it will take some time for states to get around to including petrol and diesel in the GST.

States will get to levy additional taxes on top of GST on fuel: Modi New Delhi: Petrol and diesel when brought under GST will involve a peak tax rate of 28 per cent plus states getting to levy some tax, keeping the retail rates at almost the same level as

they are currently, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said on Friday.Modi, however, said it will take some time for states to get around to including petrol and diesel in the GST and the Council will take a final call on the timing.“If petrol, diesel are to be brought into GST, then states will be allowed the levy taxes on top of 28 per cent to prop up revenue. It will take some time to include petrol, diesel in GST as the states have divergent views,” Modi said at a PHD Chamber event here. “If petro products are

brought into GST, then there will be minor impact on the incidence of tax... and minor impact on prices. The price of petrol, diesel will continue to be driven by global factors,” Modi said. He said 45-50 per cent of tax revenues of states come from petrol and diesel. Modi said petrol, diesel would not be included in the GST in the coming few months and focus would now be on new return filing system. The peak GST rate plus VAT will be equal to the present tax incidence, which is made up of excise duty, levied by the central

government, and VAT charged by the states. The Centre currently levies a total of Rs 19.48 per litre of excise duty on petrol and Rs 15.33 per litre on diesel. On top of this, states levy Value Added Tax (VAT) - the lowest being in Andaman and Nicobar Islands where a 6 per cent sales tax is charged on both the fuel. Mumbai has the highest VAT of 39.12 per cent on petrol while Telangana levies the highest VAT of 26 per cent on diesel. Delhi charges a VAT of 27 per cent on petrol and 17.24 per cent on diesel.

Gujarat HC rejects MLA’s plea against invalidation of caste certificate Ahmedabad : In a setback to Gujarat Independent MLA Bhupendrasinh Khant from Morva Hadaf Assembly, the Gujarat High Court Friday rejected his petition challenging the decision of the state Tribal Development Commission (TDC) invalidating his tribal caste certificate. With High Court’s order, Khant faces disqualification as an MLA since the Morva Hadaf Assembly constituency is reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST). Khant had won the Assembly election by defeating BJP by a margin of over 4000 votes in

Morva Hadaf seat. Khant, who was earlier with the Congress, contested the polls as an Independent after the party offered the seat to ally Bharatiya Tribal Party of Chotu Vasava. Days after the Assembly poll results, Khant met Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and returned to the party fold. Days after the scrutiny committee headed by the tribal development commissioner set aside his ST community certificate in January, Khant moved the High Court, which asked the committee to give Khant a chance to produce documents to back his claim.

Ahmedabad : Neuberg Diagnostics one of India’s leading diagnostics chain, has partnered with Premaitha Health UK a global leader in NIPT services through a technology transfer to bring IONA® a CEIVD product to India from the Neuberg Centre for Genomic Medicine in NeubergSupratech Ahmedabad, India. Dr. Sandip Shah Executive Director, Neuberg Diagnostics commented: “Our experience with NIPT so far has been very promising, and our clinical partners have encouraged us to adopt NIPT to complement our current prenatal screening services to support better management of crucial pregnancy related decisions. However, we are working with insurance service providers and government agencies to ease the cost implications which has been a major limitation for wider patient use Our motivation comes from pregnant women who thank us after the postNIPT test for supporting them in understanding the health of their precious child” Dr GSK Velu, Chairman & Managing Director, Neuberg Diagnostics stated “Our primary focus as a diagnostic partner is to adopt advanced technology to

support our clinical fraternity in integration of tests like NIPT to suit their practice with the end-goal of better patient care” Pregnancy management is a crucial and highly specialized field of medicine which can greatly impact the wellbeing of neonates, expecting parents and their families. According to a recent study, incidences of genetic disorders have increased significantly in India, with a diagnosis of Down’s syndrome in 1 in every 800 births, totaling 37,000 babies diagnosed with Down’s syndrome per annum. In addition, Edwards’ syndrome is diagnosed in 1 in every 6000 births and Patau’s syndrome in 1 in every 10,000

newborn babies annually. An area of importance in India, a country with a high birth rate is the occurrence of congenital anomalies is screening of pregnancies early for risk of chromosomal abnormalities to reassure the couple of their child’s health. It is usually done by combining ultrasound scans with biochemical investigations to arrive at an accurate risk assessment and support further pregnancy management an area referred to as prenatal screening. A recent more advanced method for prenatal screening is NIPT, Neuberg-IONA utilizes the circulating DNA from Maternal blood and advances genomics

platforms of Next Generation sequencing (NGS) combined with bioinformatics algorithms to very accurately predict the risk for chromosomal disorders including Down’s syndrome (T21), Edward Syndrome (T18), Patau Syndrome (T13) and Turner’s syndrome (Monosomy X). There are two main advantages to this approach 1. It provides better analytical sensitivity of >99% compared to other non-invasive methods 2. It is very safe for the both the mother and child and can help avoid unnecessary invasive procedure Neuberg IONA test can be performed at a fetal fraction of 2% and above enabling clinical use as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy and reducing redraw or resampling rates (< 0.5 %). Neuberg -IONA is performed using maternal blood and will help us offer clinically relevant results of international standards with a very quick turnaround time in a very cost-effective manner to support our medical fraternity in pregnancy care. Neuberg Diagnostics as a global laboratory alliance can offer access to NIPT through our network of PC-PNDT certified diagnostic centers across India.

international Islamist militants attack African military base in Mali, at least six dead

Bamako : Islamist militants armed with rockets and explosives raided the headquarters of an African military taskforce in central Mali, leaving at least six people dead on Friday, a spokesman for the force said. Assailants driving a vehicle rigged with bombs attacked the compound in the town of Sevare as some exchanged gunfire with Malian troops and fought to get in, officials said. Pictures from the scene showed the charred remains of a vehicle, a crater and the battered walls of the buildings, which are used by the G5 Sahel, a regional force created last year to root out jihadists in West Africa’s semi-arid Sahel region. A spokesman for the G5 force – which is made up of soldiers from Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mauritania – said two soldiers and four assailants died in the attack. “The attackers fired rockets at the headquarters and some of them infiltrated the compound. There was an exchange of fire,” defence ministry spokesman Boubacar Diallo told news agancy.

Hundreds gather in Annapolis to remember shooting victims

Annapolis : Hundreds of people gathered on Friday evening to remember the five people gunned down at a community newspaper office in Annapolis, Maryland, one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in U.S. history. The vigil came hours after accused gunman Jarrod Ramos was denied bail during a brief hearing in Anne Arundel County criminal court. Ramos, 38, appeared by video link from jail and did not speak during the proceedings. More than 300 mourners, many of them carrying candles, walked slowly through the streets of Annapolis, the state capital, near the capitol dome, which was lit up, its flags flown at half staff in honor of the shooting victims. All five of those slain worked at the Capital Gazette newspaper. Ramos is accused of opening fire on Thursday over a longstanding grudge against the paper. He is accused of entering the Capital Gazette office, firing through a glass door with a 12-gauge shotgun, hunting for victims and spraying the newsroom with gunfire as reporters hid under desks and begged for help on social media. Prosecutors said Ramos barricaded a back door to prevent people from fleeing.

UN chief Antonio Guterres again calls for end to military operations in south Syria

United Nations : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a new call for “an immediate cessation” to military operations in southwest Syria, where government forces are attacking rebel-held areas. Guterres is “deeply alarmed by the military offensive in southwestern Syria and its devastating toll on civilians,” said a statement from his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Friday. “The secretary-general recalls that the southwest area of Syria is part of a deescalation agreement agreed between Jordan, Russia and the United States,” the statement said. Guterres “calls on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law, protect civilians and facilitate safe, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access.” The UN chief had made a similar call earlier this month, after Russian-backed government forces began attacking opposition-held parts of Daraa province on June 19. Tens of thousands of Syrians have fled since the beginning of the offensive, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group says that nearly 100 civilians have been killed.
