Journey from ‘Pappu to Gappu’ full of lies: BJP slams Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Friday hit out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi for making allegations against the government, saying those with a “legacy of scams” see scams everywhere, not development. Naqvi’s remarks come a day after Gandhi launched a two-pronged offensive against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on demonetisation and Rafale deal, terming them huge scams which were committed to help his “crony capitalist friends”. “Only a person whose journey from Pappu to Gappu (a person who makes tall claims) started with lies can make such illogical statements,” Naqvi said. “Unfortunately, those who have a legacy of scams, they only see scams everywhere. They cannot see development and good governance,” the Minority Affairs Minister said. The Congress has lost all ground and therefore its leaders should keep a calm mind, and move forward after self introspection, he added. These people are helping in destroying the Congress by making all sorts of wrong claims in India and abroad, Naqvi said, in an apparent reference to Gandhi’s remarks recently in India and during his visit to the UK and Germany.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli on Friday jointly inaugurated a 400-bed Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala - a rest house for pilgrims - build with the Indian assistance in Kathmandu. “I am glad to inaugurate the Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala in Kathmandu,” Prime Minister Modi said as he handed over the rest house to the Pashupati Area Development Trust. The Dharmashala has provision for family rooms, kitchen, dining hall, library and some multipurpose halls to meet the requirements of the travellers and families on pilgrimage to Pashupatinath Temple located on the banks of the Bagmati River. “This is not just a building...The Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala will remind the visitors about the friendship of the two neighbours,” PM Modi told a gathering, amid applause. New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday questioned former finance minister P Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case for the fourth time, officials said. This is the fourth time the senior Congress leader is being questioned in the probe. He was last grilled for about six hours on August 24. Chidambaram’s son Karti has been questioned twice by the ED in this case. While the CBI has filed a charge sheet in this case involving the politician in July, the ED is expected to file its own prosecution complaint within the next fortnight.

Since July 26, at least 5,386 families have had to leave their homes. Some have moved to relief shelters. Over five hundred villages have been affected and 300 locations hit by landslides. The need for dual-class shares in India

By selling two kinds of partnership shares, through the dual-class share system, Indian businesses will actually strengthen corporate governance rather than weaken it. My argument is three-fold. First, outside shareholder control is a myth in Indian firms. Even without dual-class shares, outside shareholders do not enjoy much control. Second, the dual-class share structure makes insider control more transparent. It will signal the firms in which insiders enjoy absolute control. This will put greater onus on outside investors to exercise due diligence before investing. Third, allowing dual-class shares is the only way we can have an Indian-owned unicorn. Let me reiterate: Outside shareholders do not exercise any meaningful level of control in Indian firms. When one buys a share, one gets two sets of rights: cashflow rights and control rights. The former refers to the right to obtain dividends, while the latter refers to the right to vote in shareholder meetings to elect the board of directors. As I highlighted in the previous article, in a majority of listed firms in India, the insiders own a majority of the shares outstanding. This means that outside shareholder votes are in the minority. If all of the outside shareholders do not like something happening in the firm, they can go to the shareholder meeting and express their displeasure by voting against the proposal. But if the insider owns a majority of the shares, then the outside shareholder votes are symbolic. Apart from voting in shareholder meetings, shareholder governance is usually exercised through an independent board. The lack of real independence among Indian boards is legendary and also impedes the ability of outside shareholders to exercise their control rights. While there is a lot of independence on paper, there is very little real independence. Let me present a few pieces of evidence. Consider the Satyam Computers scandal. Nobody could fault its board for its quality and independence. It had members who were world-renowned experts in accounting and corporate governance. However, the board was in the dark for an extended period. There are a number of factors that affect the board’s ability to adequately exercise oversight. First is the presence of a shareholder with majority stake who may also control firm management. Given such a shareholding pattern, it is difficult for any independent director to go against the insider. Second, even in the US, board effectiveness is compromised by the fact that the management identifies new directors who owe their position to the chief executive officer.

Swara Bhasker: The phrase ‘log kya kahenge’ has suppressed women’s voices Mumbai : Actor Swara Bhasker, known for raising her voice on several social issues — especially those related to women’s safety and equality, says women have to face more judgment than men. “Since childhood, girls face judgment. Be it about looks or behaviour, they are being judged on everything. While getting married, judgmental questions like, ‘How a girl looks like, what’s her skin tone, how is her nature’ are being imposed on our girls for a long time. I am not saying that men are not judged, but women have to face more judgment than them,” the 30-year-old said. Swara was promoting the second season of her web show It’s Not That Simple. She believes that the status of women has changed in India, but said there is still a long way to go. “From a long time, the Hindi phrase ‘Log kya kahenge (what will people say)’ has made our women weak and has suppressed their voice, but now women are breaking all the ceilings and are moving ahead.” The Veere Di Wedding actress had faced flak over a masturbation scene that she did in the film. She says she believed in the role and did it. “While performing any role, an actor should have faith in it. If you don’t have faith in a role, it would be hard to perform it on-screen,” added Swara. Swara is also known for her performance in movies like Raanjhanaa, Tanu Weds Manu, Nil Battey Sannata and Anaarkali Ki Aarah.

Swara Bhasker, who will be seen next in the second season of It’s Not That Simple, says women have to face more judgment than men.

Kangana Ranaut on Sonu Sood leaving Manikarnika: Jennifer Lawrence’s hacker gets prison time He refused to work under a woman director Mumbai : After discrepancies over the directorial credits of Manikarnika, reports today suggested that Sonu Sood, who was playing a pivotal role in the movie, has quit following a showdown with Kangana Ranaut. Kangana, however, has slammed reports of a showdown. She said, “When I never met him, never directed him, when did I have this showdown?” In a statement, the Manikarnika actor said, “Sonu and I haven’t even met since the last shot with Krish (director) last year. He is busy filming Simmba. He couldn’t even give us tentative dates to match combinations with other actors. The producers showed him the film and writers narrated the patchwork

Hrithik-Disha rumours embarrass Tiger Shroff

Mumbai : An over-enthusiastic media house recently decided to create some buzz by suggesting that Hrithik Roshan had been sending Disha Patani flirtatious text messages — an allegation that has been vehemently denied by both actors. Such irresponsible and tasteless gossip would normally be ignored, but in this case, there are some sensitive relationships at stake. Disha Patani is believed to be seeing Tiger Shroff, and the young actor hero-worships Hrithik. They’re even set to work together in the near future. “Tiger and Hrithik will soon start shooting for a Yash Raj film they’re doing together.

www.sunvillasamachar.com

This kind of slanderous gossip will create an embarrassing situation for them,” says a close friend of Hrithik’s. The report also said that Disha had walked out of the aforementioned Yash Raj film due to Hrithik’s flirtatious ways. And though Hrithik has retaliated with a sarcastic tweet, and Disha with a sincere clarification, the damage is done. “The gossip is out there for public consumption. After his separation from his wife and the Kangana Ranaut controversy, Hrithik has been making an effort to steer clear of affairs and scandals. He doesn’t need such cheesy gossip,” says another source close to Hrithik.

to him. He refused to meet me. He vehemently denied to work under a woman director, which is kind of amusing because Sonu is a dear friend and I have even launched the music of a film that he produced at his request. Even though the team suggested that

they have full faith in me, it seems, Sonu had neither dates nor faith.” “And when I last spoke to him, he suggested that I can go ahead with someone else and when I narrated the script to Zeeshan Ayyub, he called the studio and gave the dates.

As a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Refugee Agency, the 49-year-old actress said that nothing prepared her for “the extent and

depth of suffering” when she visited the camps of refugees in Bangladesh. She questioned the council, saying, “I am a mother, and I saw my children in the eyes of every single refugee child I met. I saw myself in every parent. How can any mother endure seeing her child thrown into a fire? Their experiences will never leave me.”

New Delhi : Akshay Kumar starrer Gold had opened on Independence Day and its 9-day extended week helped it earn Rs 89.30 crore. In its second week, the film saw a considerable decline and managed to only garner Rs 14.70 crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the latest box office figures of Gold on Twitter. He wrote, “#Gold witnesses a decline in Week 2… Amassed a major chunk in Week 1 and more specifically on Day 1 [25.25 cr]… Likely

to fold up under 115 cr… [Week 2] Fri 1.85 cr, Sat 3.10 cr, Sun 4.75 cr, Mon 1.45 cr, Tue 1.30 cr, Wed 1.25 cr, Thu 1 cr. Total: 104 cr. It fictionalises the events preceding the big final, in which an independent India defeated the British to clinch the top prize. Akshay Kumar plays the role of Tapan Das, the team’s manager. The Reema Kagti directorial also stars Mouni

Roy, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Kumar Singh, Amit Sadh, and Sunny Kaushal. In her review of Gold, NEWS AGANCY’ critic Shubhra Gupta wrote, “The period is done beautifully, and despite the predictable sports film tropes– underdogs coming up top, conflicts being resolved, last minute fortune reversals—the younger players keep up the tempo, with debutant Sunny Kaushal doing a stand-out job.

Decoding Rajkummar Rao’s rise in Bollywood Mumbai : In a career spanning eight years, Rajkummar Rao has made a steady rise to the top, becoming one of the most distinctive and trusted actors of Hindi cinema. The actor, who turned 34 today, believes Shahid, Trapped, Newton and Bareilly Ki Barfi are the four films that impacted his career the most. “The characters in these films were real in a way. Though Shahid was the only true story, what happened in Trapped can happen to anyone. And I am sure there are people like Newton and

there are boys who are naive, sweet and rowdy, like my part in Bareilly Ki Barfi. The humanness is something I loved,” the actor told NEWS AGANCY in an interview. Shahid, a 2013 biopic directed by Hansal Mehta, was based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi who was assassinated in 2010. “Hansal sir narrated me his story and on a human level, I was moved that there was somebody like him. That film also changed me as a person.” He spent a lot of time

with Shahid’s family, trying to know him. “There was such variation in his life starting from being a victim, to briefly going to a terrorist camp, to landing in Tihar Jail and then becoming this human rights lawyer. It was a fascinating life. What was it that was driving him to go to these extremes? I tried to achieve that.” The film earned him his first National Film Award. It also started one of the most successful collaborations between an actor and director in Hindi cinema.

Asian Games 2018: India’ sensational Table Tennis campaign ends with two historic bronze medals

Southampton : Wrecker-in-chief Jasprit Bumrah doesn’t believe India squandered a good position after allrounder Sam Curran lifted England to 246 following a top-order collapse on the opening day of the fourth Test in Southampton. Curran’s resolute 78 bailed England out after they were reduced to 86 for six at one stage. The 20-year-old put on vital lower order partnerships with Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad. Bumrah said that it wasn’t possible to induce another collapse in the English line-up. “You can’t wicket 5-6 wickets every session,” said Bumrah, who took two crucial wickets in the morning session to trigger a collapse. “They played well too, and built a good partnership between Sam Curran and Moeen Ali. When Curran came in to bat, he was

playing the waiting game. As the ball got older, it stopped swinging a lot and there was less seam movement as well. “Then he played some shots and they scored some runs. After the break, we decided we had to create pressure again and work hard for a wicket, and things would follow.” Bumrah said India were happy to be in the position they are in, and will look to exert further control in the match on day two morning. “If you’d told us in the morning that we’d get them out for 250, we’d have taken that any day. We had them 80 for five, but they played well too,” he said. “You can’t be too greedy and expect too much: ‘Oh, they’re 80 for five, so you should get them out for 100.’ We’re happy with this score and if we bat well, it will help us going forward.

New Delhi: India’s sensational run in the table tennis event at the 18th Asian Games came to an end after Sharath Kamal, G Sathiyan and Manika Batra lost in the prequarterfinals of the singles competition. World number 33 Sharath Kamal went down fighting against 14th ranked ChihYuan Chunag of Chinese Taipei 7-11, 11-9, 10-12, 16-14, 9-11. Sathiyan, who led India to a maiden medal in 60 years with his two wins against Japan in the team event, was not to able to do an encore against Kenta Matsudaira. The world number 39 had beaten the 19th ranked Japanese in the team semifinals but today

was not his day. He lost 11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 6-11, 10-12 in another round of 16 match. Rising star Manika Batra won a game against world number five Wang Manyu but it was not enough to trouble the Chinese. She lost 2-11, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6, 4-11 in the women’s singles round of 16. The table tennis players’ performance is among the highlights of India’s campaign at the 18th Asian Games. Even the players did not think that they would end winning two bronze medals from the continental event. Along with the men’s team bronze, Kamal and Batra combined to secure a bronze in mixed doubles.

Virat Kohli becomes second fastest Indian to reach 6000 Test runs

Virat Kohli reached the milestone in 119 innings which is quicker than Sachin Tendulkar(120) and Sir Vivian Richards (120)

New Delhi: Virat Kohli added yet another feather to his illustrious career after becoming the second fastest Indian to reach 6000 Test runs. Playing in his 70th Test match and 39th as captain, Kohli reached 6000 runs with a streaky boundary. The

fastest man to 6000 runs is still Sir Donald Bradman (68 innings). Earlier this year, then Australia captain Steve Smith levelled Sir Garfield Sobers in second place on the list (111 innings). Sachin Tendulkar averaged little bit over 56 when he passed the milestone as a 26-year-old against South Africa in March 2000. The Little Master remains as the only player to have scored 6,000 Test runs prior to turning 27.

The 20-year-old Indian, who was competing in the season’s Diamond League Series Finale just three days after winning Asian Games gold in Jakarta, sent the spear to a best distance of 85.73m to end at fourth position in the eight-man event on Thursday night. Chopra, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, was at the third

position till the fifth and penultimate round but the reigning Olympic champion Thomas Rohler of Germany came up with an 85.76m effort in his last attempt to pip the Indian by a mere 0.03 meter. The star Indian could not repeat his national record-shattering throw of 88.06m in Jakarta but his effort here earned him USD 6000 besides the enormous amount of experience he got by rubbing shoulders with the best in the business. Meanwhile, a third-round monster throw of 91.44m from Germany’s Andreas Hofmann earned him his first big international

Business SBI says Rupee still overvalued, no need to panic

Mumbai: Even as the rupee breached the crucial 71 level plumbing a new lifetime low on Friday, State Bank said one should not get too much worried about a “little bit of depreciation” as the currency is still “overvalued”. The rupee has been the worst among the large emerging market peers, losing over 10 per cent from the beginning of the year. But SBI managing director PK Gupta told reporters that the rupee has been faring better than many of its peers, including the Turkish, Argentinean, and Indonesian currencies. “You need to look at what’s happening globally. Argentina, Indonesia...most of the currencies are losing against the dollar. In fact, the fall of the rupee against the dollar has been much lesser compared to most other currencies,” Gupta said. “I don’t think the value of the rupee is so much of a concern now. The unit is overvalued in any case.

Vodafone-Idea merger a big corporate milestone: Telecom Secretary

New Delhi: The government on Friday termed the merger of Idea and Vodafone in India as a big corporate milestone and said the move paves the way for a “good competitive scenario” in India. Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan sought to allay any fears of cartelisation in the market saying it is “unlikely”. “This is a good competitive scenario and good configuration for India to have,” she told reporters here. Earlier on Friday, Vodafone and Idea Cellular announced completion of the USD 23-billion merger of their India operations creating

the country’s largest operator to take on competition from the likes of Reliance Jio and Airtel. The merged entity called Vodafone Idea Ltd will have a subscriber base of over 40 crore and a market share of over 35 per cent. “The market is heading for consolidation and stability and that is a big milestone... Kalpen Parekh, President,DSP Investment Managers Pvt. Ltd said, “We have always believed that we will reopen the Scheme for subscriptions in a structure that we feel will be best suited for our investors when our fund managers feel comfortable to absorb further flows. While the small cap space has seen some correction, it also presents an opportunity to buy certain high conviction stocks at reasonable valuations. Vinit Sambre, Head Equities,DSP Investment Managers Pvt. Ltd., said “The earnings cycle seems to be picking up, but at the same time, broad valuations continue to be high.

While some small caps have seen a correction, we have re-oriented the portfolio by taking advantage of large price corrections and adding some of these small cap stocks to the portfolio. Our process and philosophy in picking up stocks remains unchanged and we are confident that we will continue to build a portfolio of good companies.” DSP first restricted flows into the Scheme in October 2014 to Rs 2 lakh per investor as it felt that further large inflows into the Scheme may prove detrimental to the interest of the existing unit holders. In August 2016, DSP further restricted flows into the Scheme to Rs. 1 lakh per investor. The Scheme stopped fresh inflows altogether in February 2017.We still expect the market to remain volatile in the mid-2019 run up to the election. Hence, we have opened subscriptions through the STP/SIP route only. We believe that there is an opportunity for investors to increase exposure to small caps post the recent correction, via the SIP routewith a long term time horizon.”

The latest order, issued on July 23, was received by the special riot court hearing the last of the nine cases — the Naroda Gam case — two weeks ago. It said the apex court would no longer monitor the cases, and asked the SIT to take them to their logical end.

Supreme Court stops monitoring 2002 Gujarat riot cases Ahmedabad : The Supreme Court has disposed of a petition filed by the NHRC 15 years ago seeking transfer of the 2002 Gujarat riot cases outside the state, apart from other directions, on the grounds of faulty investigations. The petition had led to the 2008 order directing the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe nine major post-Godhra riot cases under the Supreme Court’s close supervision and monitoring. The latest order, issued on July 23, was received by the special riot court hearing the last of the nine cases — the Naroda Gam case — two weeks ago. It said the apex court would no longer monitor the cases, and asked the SIT to take them to their logical end. The order, which was accessed by The Indian Express, grants the special court time till October 16, 2018, to complete the Naroda Gam trial. Disposing of the 109-2003 petition, it stated, “After scanning through all the orders which have been passed from time to time, we feel that the purpose of this petition stands served and no

Gujarat alone created 74% jobs through employment exchanges

further orders are required.” It added that “if at any time interference of this court is required, either party would be permitted to file IA (Interlocutory Application)”. On Friday, the SIT will seek a clarification from the Supreme Court on whether it requires to send periodic progress reports as the Naroda Gam trial is still in progress and appeal petitions are pending in other riot cases. SIT sources told The Indian Express that “the SC order stated that it would not monitor the progress of the cases and directed to wrap up the trial (of Naroda Gam) by October”. The apex court also directed the SIT to take all the cases to its logical end. After the riots, the Gujarat government faced charges of mishandling of cases. The NHRC, which was taking suo motu cognizance of the incidents, in an unprecedented step moved the Supreme Court through a criminal writ petition (109-2003) after all the accused in the Best Bakery murders of Vadodara were acquitted. One of its main pleas was to shift the cases outside Gujarat.

Modhwadia asked. Kalsaria, meanwhile, alleged that police was stopping people from coming to Hardik’s residence. The 25-yearold quota spearhead had launched his hunger strike on August 25 on the third anniversary of his mega proquota rally in Ahmedabad that had turned violent He is demanding a loan waiver for Gujarat farmers and inclusion of his community in the OBC category to facilitate reservation for its members in government jobs and educational institutions.

international Indonesian family questions police killings in run-up to Asian Games

Jakarta : While many Indonesians have been cheering on the athletes at the Asian Games, which began in their country on August 18, some have been mourning loved ones killed in a security crackdown aimed at ensuring a trouble-free sports festival. Police killed at least 11 people in the runup to the games, which finish on Sunday, in a brazen campaign against crime that has shocked human rights groups 20 years after democracy was ushered in after decades of authoritarian rule. At least one bereaved family is demanding answers over the death of their relative at the hands of police, who provided few details about how and why the young man was killed. “I believe he was tortured and shot,” said a close relative of the victim. The relative declined to be identified, citing security worries. Reuters could not independently verify the details of the shooting.

EU set to end switch between summer and winter time: Juncker

Berlin : The European Union’s chief executive said on Friday the bloc was set to end the practice of switching between summer and winter time after a survey found most EU citizens against the practice.More than 80 percent of EU citizens wanted to abolish the EU’s switch and favoured keeping the time used in summer for the whole year, Jean-Claude Juncker said on German television, adding he would put the plan to a debate among EU commissioners. “We will decide that today,” Juncker said. “Millions … believe that summertime should be all the time.” Any change would still need approval from national governments and European Parliament to become law. EU law requires that citizens in all 28 EU countries move their clocks an hour forward on the last Sunday in March and switch back to winter time on the final Sunday in October. But Finland, with the most northerly EU national capital, this year called for the EU to halt the practice, which critics say it can cause long-term health problems, especially among young children and elderly people. Research has shown that the time change disrupts sleep schedules and can impact productivity at work. Supporters say making the switch to give extra morning daylight in winter and evening light in summer can help reduce traffic accidents and save energy. Outside the EU, a handful of European countries have stopped switching between summer and winter time, including Russia, Turkey, Belarus and Iceland.

Donald Trump vows to ‘get involved’ if Justice Dept, FBI don’t do their job

Washington : President Donald Trump said on Thursday Attorney General Jeff Sessions was safe in his job until November but warned, at a campaignstyle rally in Indiana, that he would “get involved” if the FBI and Justice Department didn’t “start doing their job.” Trump told Bloomberg News in an interview that Sessions, whom he has repeatedly attacked for recusing himself from oversight of the Russia probe, was safe in his job until the November congressional elections. But he declined to say if he would keep Sessions on after that. Speaking later at a rally in Evansville, Indiana, Trump suggested that the leadership of the Justice Department and FBI were biased against Republicans and that “people are angry.” “Our Justice Department and our FBI – at the top of each, because inside they have incredible people – but our Justice Department and our FBI have to start doing their job and doing it right and doing it now,” Trump said. “I wanted to stay out, but at some point if it doesn’t straighten out properly … I will get involved and I’ll get in there if I have to.” Trump has held Sessions responsible, in part, for the Russia investigation. After Sessions recused himself, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to lead the probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, which Trump has called a “witch hunt.
