Modi’s remarks come as a continuation of his Saturday’s statement, where he had lashed out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi over his remark that the Sardar Patel’s ‘Statue of Unity’, set to be inaugurated in Gujarat on October 31, is ‘Made in China’.

In Gujarat, PM Modi attacks Congress: ‘Abuse me, but do not belittle personalities like Sardar Patel’ Committed to peace but not at cost of self-respect: PM Modi on ‘Mann ki Baat’

New Delhi : In a veiled attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that he has no problem if his opponents keep abusing him, but they should not belittle personalities like Sardar Patel. Modi was in Gujarat to inaugurate a host of development projects in Anand, Khatraj and Anjar, and a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi in Rajkot. The Prime Minister inaugurated several projects of Amul in Anand, including a Rs 533 crore premium-chocolate

plant with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes per month. Speaking at the Amul event in Anand, Modi remembered Patel for his contribution to the development of a cooperative model in India. “Sardar saheb sowed the seed for a third economic model — controlled neither by government nor capitalists. Instead, it was created with the cooperation of farmers and people and everybody was a part of it. This is one viable alternative to socialism and capitalism,” Modi said. Patel was also the founder of the Amul dairy cooperative movement in Gujarat. Modi also inaugurated a nutritional food plant, a Rs 8 crore centre of excellence in food processing of the Anand Agriculture University and a Rs 20 crore ice cream plant of the Vidya Dairy.

Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla said the final number of dead could be in the ‘thousands.’

832 dead in Indonesia quake, tsunami; people face food, water shortage

Palu: The death toll from a powerful earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia leapt to 832 on Sunday, as stunned people on the stricken island of Sulawesi struggled to find food and water and looting spread. The new toll announced by the national disaster agency was almost double the previous figure. Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla said the final number of dead could be in the “thousands.” “It feels very tense,” said 35-yearold mother Risa Kusuma, comforting her feverish baby boy at an evacuation centre in the gutted coastal city of Palu. “Every minute an ambulance brings in bodies. Clean water is scarce. The minimarkets are looted everywhere.” Indonesia’s Metro TV on Sunday broadcast footage from a coastal community in Donggala, close to the

epicentre of the quake, where some waterfront homes appeared crushed but a resident said most people fled to higher ground after the quake struck. “When it shook really hard, we all ran up into the hills,” a man identified as Iswan told Metro TV. In Palu city on Sunday aid was trickling in, the Indonesian military had been deployed and search-and-rescue workers were doggedly combing the rubble for survivors -- looking for as many as 150 people at one upscale hotel alone. “We managed to pull out a woman alive from the Hotel RoaRoa last night,” Muhammad Syaugi, head of the national search and rescue agency, told AFP. “We even heard people calling for help there yesterday.” “What we now desperately need is heavy machinery to clear the rubble.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday emphasised on the importance of ‘Parakram Parv’ to raise awareness about Indian soldiers’ contributions towards maintaining peace. Addressing the nation through his radio programme ‘Mann ki Baat’, the Prime Minister said, “Yesterday, 1.25 billion Indians celebrated Parakram Parv. We remembered the 2016 surgical strike when our soldiers gave a befitting reply to those waging a proxy war in the garb of terrorism. The armed forces organised exhibitions at various places so that the citizens, especially the youth, get to know our might and also the capability valour and sacrifices of our soldiers. Parakram Parv reminds the youth of the glorious traditions of our armed forces and inspires us to preserve the unity and integrity of our country.” “I attended one such programme in the land of the brave - Jodhpur. It is now clear that our soldiers will give a befitting reply to those who try to disrupt the atmosphere of peace and progress in our country. We believe in peace and are committed to preserve it but not at the cost of our self-respect and sovereignty,” PM Modi added. The Prime Minister further cited Indian soldiers’ contributions during the two world wars as proof of the nation’s commitment towards maintaining peace.

BJP does not protect Hindus, says Kejriwal on Lucknow techie’s death

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Sunday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party over the killing of an executive of a private company in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, claiming “the BJP does not protect the interests of Hindus”. The AAP chief in a tweet also said that he spoke over phone to the wife of Vivek Tiwari (38), who was allegedly shot dead Saturday by a police constable in Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow, when he did not stop his car for checking. “Spoke to his wife on phone...,” Kejriwal tweeted. In a series of tweets, in Hindi and English, the AAP leader slammed

the saffron party over the incident. “Vivek Tiwari was a Hindu, right? Then why was he killed? BJP leaders rape Hindu girls across the country? See it clear. BJP is not wellwisher of Hindus. If they have to murder Hindus for power, they won’t think twice,” he alleged in his tweet in Hindi. He also responded to some of the questions raised by Twitter users in connection with the incident, like whether there will be a proper investigation in the case. “No. Even though Vivek Tiwari was a Hindu. The BJP does not protect the interests of Hindus,” he replied in response to a tweet.

No noise should be made if Dassault didn’t find HAL ‘useful enough’, says VK Singh

Dubai/New Delhi: Minister of State for External Affairs General V K Singh has defended the Rafale fighter aircraft deal, saying it is not the government but the company that makes the equipment which decides the partner to fulfil the offset obligations in the inter-governmental agreements. Addressing the Indian community at the Indian consulate in Dubai on Saturday evening, General Singh said no noise should be made if the French aerospace major Dassault Aviation did not find the state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) “useful enough”. “The thing that gets paddled around is what happens to Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). If I can say tongue-in-cheek, if Dassault didn’t find (HAL) useful enough, we shouldn’t make noise,” he said.

“It’s the company that is making equipment that decides whom to give the offset. So the decision is that of Dassault and for various things they have selected a number of companies, Anil Ambani is one of them,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the procurement of a batch of 36 Rafale jets after holding talks with then French President Hollande on

Pakistan rakes up RSS, Yogi Adityanath, NRC to attack India at UN

New Delhi : A day after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj sharply criticised Islamabad over its sponsorship of cross-border terrorism, Pakistan’s envoy to the United Nations Saad Warraich on Sunday trained guns at RSS and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to allege that there was no room for dissent in “illiberal India of today”. Exercising the Right of Reply, Warraich accused the RSS, BJP’s ideological mentor, of supporting the spread of fascism through its centres. “The breeding ground of terrorism in our region is the RSS centres of Fascism. The claims of religious superiority are perpetrated through straight patronage all across India,” the

Pakistan envoy said. He also said that the face of the largest Indian state of Uttar Pradesh was an unabashed Hindu extremist who openly advocated religious superiority of Hindus. “Members of India’s minorities, including Christians and Muslims, are publically lynched at the hands of Hindus elites, where an unabashed Hindu extremist Yogi Adityanath, who openly supports the superiority of the Hindus, serves as the face of the largest Indian state Uttar Pradesh,” Warraich said. Without naming BJP chief Amit Shah, Warraich said several Bengalis in Assam had suddenly become “homeless” and “have been called termites by a prominent Indian leader”.

April 10, 2015, in Paris. The final deal was sealed on September 23, 2016. A controversy broke out when a French media report quoted Hollande as saying that the Indian government proposed Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence as the partner for the French aerospace giant in the Rs 58,000 crore Rafale deal and France did not have a choice.

The case for another interest rate hike

The macroeconomic outlook has changed considerably since the last meeting of the monetary policy committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and so have expectations in financial markets. The majority of analysts now expect the rate-setting committee to raise policy rates later this week, largely due to developments on the external front. This newspaper also believes that there are reasons to raise policy rates at this stage. Though the MPC is driven by the inflation targeting mandate, renewed weakness in the rupee will affect inflation and inflationary expectations. Further, crude prices have risen over 12% since the last meeting and are expected to remain elevated in the coming months. New forecasts suggest that crude prices could actually rise above $100 per barrel in the foreseeable future. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is unwilling to increase production and sanctions on Iran is affecting supplies. Apart from pushing inflation, higher crude prices would further increase the current account deficit (CAD) and put more pressure on the currency. Financing the CAD would not be easy in the current global environment. Though the US Federal Reserve is raising rates along expected lines, continued tightening will affect capital flows to emerging market economies. The US central bank is expected to raise interest rates once more this year, followed by three rate hikes next year. Foreign investors have sold Indian assets worth over $11 billion so far this year. The Union government has taken several steps in recent weeks to attract capital flows and reduce “non-essential” imports. However, these measures are unlikely to yield the desired results. On the contrary, encouraging short-term debt inflows and arbitrarily raising import duty can do more harm than good in the medium term. It is important to highlight that there are no easy short-term solutions to reduce pressure on the external account. One of the biggest problems is that India’s exports have remained sluggish in recent years. The government should focus on removing impediments for reviving exports. The depreciation in rupee should help exporters here—but only to an extent given that the data shows that this relationship is somewhat weak in India. Further, the newly constituted high-level advisory group would do well to suggest exact policy measures that will help boost exports. Higher crude prices will also increase fiscal risks. The government has done well to resist the pressure to reduce taxes on fuel products.

ICC hearing on PCB claim against BCCI: India should not pay money to Pakistan, says Anurag Thakur

New Delhi : Ahead of International Cricket Committee’s (ICC) hearing on Pakistan’s Cricket Board’s (PCB) claim of roughly Rs 447 crore against India for twice refusing to play a bilateral series, former BCCI chief Anurag Thakur has said that “India should not pay any money to PCB.” Speaking to news agency ANI, Thakur said, “For a number of years, many nations did not visit Pakistan to play matches. I think no official from India should attend ICC hearing.” The ICC hearing on the matter will begin in Dubai on October 1. Former IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla also spoke on the upcoming threeday hearing and said that both the cricketing boards should solve

the matter among themselves rather than involving ICC in it. Speaking to ANI, Shukla said, “As far as BCCI vs Pakistan Cricket Board dispute is concerned, my own view is that both the Boards should resolve it amicably instead of lingering it in ICC. BCCI always wanted to play with Pakistan but there are certain issues and we need government nod to go to Pakistan to play matches,” he said. Shukla further added that India have always played against Pakistan on neutral venues and hence there is no question of paying money to the cricketing board. “Wherever international matches are organised by ICC or Asian Cricket Council, we always play with Pakistan, this time we played at a neutral venue.

DoT likely to approach Cabinet for 4G spectrum to BSNL, MTNL in November

Amazon.in announces its biggest festive celebration ‘Great Indian Festival’ at the ‘Amazon Festive Home’ Showcase

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India on Thursday allowed banks to dip further into statutory cash reserves in a bid to ease a liquidity squeeze afflicting the nation’s money markets. RBI in a statement said banks could ‘carve out’ up to 15 per cent of holdings under the statutory liquidity reserves to meet their liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) requirements as compared to 13 per cent now. This resulted from a rise in the facility to avail funds for LCR to 13 per cent from 11 per cent, effective October 1, RBI said in a statement. The move by the central bank follows concerns over tight liquidity conditions and banks’ unwillingness to lend to NBFCs. RBI said it “stands ready to meet the durable liquidity requirements of the system through various available instruments depending on its dynamic assessment

Batra said some of the outstanding bills are pending since 2006 but even the CAG observations have not deterred the government to clear them. The debt burden of the national carrier, which is grappling with tough business conditions, is estimated to be more than Rs 50,000 crore. a person will not be a god, but the god will be in sangh)”. She, however, immediately clarified in lighter vein that “sangh here doesn’t mean Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), but the power of sangh is god”. PIL in Gujarat High Court: ‘Segregate train seats for veg, meat-eaters’

AHMEDABAD: A public interest litigation (PIL) filed in Gujarat High Court has sought the court’s intervention in having segregated seats for vegetarian and non-vegetarian passengers in trains. The PIL, filed by E E Saiyed, 67, a resident of Khanpur in Ahmedabad, a lawyer himself, has pleaded the court to direct Indian Railways to give option for allotting seats in accordance with the food choice of passengers. Filed through advocate R J Goswami, the PIL is likely to come up for hearing next week. The petition states, “Respondents be directed to segregate vegetarian and non-vegetarian food and segregate seats at the time of ticket booking in accordance with food choices so that no discomfort is caused to passengers who are vegetarian.” Claiming that his PIL does not have any political motive, the petitioner states, “Indian Railways in its contract for catering services takes utmost

Hospital, the system is not only catering to the population from the city but also to patients from other centres,” said a Civil Hospital official. “Necessary steps are being taken and a sustained campaign against the flu is under way.”Health officials have already issued an advisory not to take symptoms of cold lightly. The antiviral can work only if it is taken at the onset of the disease. Highrisk patients, including the elderly, diabetics, pregnant women, people suffering from chronic respiratory conditions, and children between 5 and 15 years, should be extra cautious, the advisory says.

care and caution for providing the best eatables to its passengers. Furthermore, the effort put in to cater to a vast diversity of people residing in a country like India is praiseworthy. However, the segregation between vegetarian food and non-vegetarian food is precarious and there is no distinction with regard to serving the passenger according to their choices.” Petitioner Saiyed has said that he is a “pure vegetarian” and has filed the PIL so that

“separate sitting arrangements for vegetarian and non-vegetarian passengers can be provided.” The PIL states, “As food choice is being taken at the time of booking by the Indian Railway, the option for allotting seats in accordance with food choices should be encouraged so that co-passengers may not suffer. Therefore, the petition is seeking direction to the effect that allotting of seats should be made on the basis of food choices.”

international Iraq’s Kurds hold elections for regional parliament

Irbil : Iraq’s self-ruled Kurdish region held its long-delayed parliamentary elections on Sunday, a year after a vote for independence sparked a punishing backlash from Baghdad, leaving Kurdish leaders deeply divided. More than 700 candidates are vying for 111 seats in the elections, in which nearly 3.5 million Kurds were eligible to vote. Eleven seats are reserved for religious and ethnic minorities: five for Christians, five for Turkmen candidates and one for the Armenian community. It’s unclear how much change the elections could bring or whether the vote would only cement Iraqi Kurdish divisions further. Polls closed in the early evening and unofficial results were expected to start coming in later on Sunday. The last parliamentary elections in Iraq’s Kurdish region were in 2013, but the assembly stopped meeting in 2015 amid internal political tensions and the war against the Islamic State group. The political deadlock also delayed new elections, which were originally planned for last November.

‘We fell in love:’ Donald Trump swoons over letters from North Korea’s Kim Jong

Washington : US President Donald Trump took his enthusiasm for his detente with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to new heights on Saturday, declaring at a rally with supporters that “we fell in love” after exchanging letters. Trump and Kim have said they want to work toward denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, holding an unprecedented meeting earlier this year in Singapore to discuss the idea. Before they turned the page on decades of public acrimony, the leaders regularly traded threats and insults as North Korea pushed to develop a nuclear missile capable of hitting the United States. “I was really being tough – and so was he. And we would go back and forth,” Trump told a rally in West Virginia. “And then we fell in love, okay? No, really – he wrote me beautiful letters, and they’re great letters,” he said. His supporters laughed and applauded. Trump grumbled that commentators would cast him as “unpresidential” for describing Kim in such glowing terms.

First rebel group begins withdrawal from demilitarised zone in Syria’s Idlib

Beirut : The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday that rebel group Failaq al-Sham has started withdrawing its forces and heavy arms from a demilitarised zone in northwest Syria. The group is the first to comply with a requirement to leave a demilitarised buffer zone set up by Turkey and Russia to avert a Russian-backed Syrian army offensive, Rami Abdulrahman, head of the UK-based war monitor told Reuters. Rebel sources could not immediately be reached for comment. “The group is withdrawing its forces and heavy arms in small batches from southern Aleppo countryside, adjacent to Idlib province, which is part of the DMZ towards the west,” Abdulrahman said. The demilitarized zone will be 15 to 20 km (10 to 12 miles) deep, run along the contact line between rebel and government fighters, and will be patrolled by Turkish and Russian forces. Turkey and Russia had agreed in mid-September to enforce a new demilitarized zone in Idlib province from which rebels will be required to withdraw by the middle of next month. Failaq al-Sham is the third largest group among the rebel groups in Northwest Syria, according to the monitor. The biggest jihadist group, Tahrir al-Sham, has yet to announce its position regarding the agreement.
