GDP rebounds, grows at 6.3% in Q2 Rahul Gandhi said PM like actors does not need any contact lens for tears to roll down his eyes.

Modi an excellent actor, better than Amitabh Bachchan: Rahul jibes at PM SS News | Visavadar/Amreli: Beginning his two-day tour of pollbound Gujarat with a visit to the famous Somnath temple, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his emotional exhortations, calling him an “excellent actor better than Amitabh Bachchan”. Addressing three rallies at Visavadar, Savarkundla and Amreli in the Saurashtra region, Gandhi also reached out to Patidars and attacked Modi over his “silence” on Rafale deal and “proximity” to select industrialists. Before setting out on the campaign trail, Gandhi offered prayers at the famous shrine of Lord Shiva at Somnath. “Narendra Modi is a ‘zabardast’ (excellent) actor, even better than Amitabh Bachchan. Generally, an actor has to put contact lens when he has to weep... His eyes burns and tears roll down. But Narendra Modiji does not need any contact lens for tears to roll down his eyes,” Gandhi told a rally at Savarkundla. At Visavadar, Gandhi referred to the 2015 quota stir in which 14 members of the Patidar community were killed in police firing and said if anyone raises his voice he either gets beaten up or has to face bullets in Gujarat. “All the communities are raising their voice here against the government. But what do you get if you raise your voice in Gujarat? You are beaten up, you have to face bullets,” Gandhi said. Visavdar is a Patidar-dominated constituency in politically crucial Saurashtra region. “I asked Modiji three questions (on the Rafale deal). First, is there a difference in the cost of the planes in the first and the second contract (signed with a French firm), please give the reply in yes or no. Why was the contract given to a private industrialist friend instead of Hindustan Aeronautics limited (HAL)?

Tensions tend to rise during the drills, which are condemned by the North as rehearsals for invasion.

Ex-Defence Minister AK Antony suffers ‘minor’ brain haemorrhage, hospitalised

SS News | New Delhi: Former Defence Minister AK Antony was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi on Wednesday after he suffered a “minor” brain haemorrhage. “He was admitted on Wednesday afternoon. He has suffered a minor brain haemorrhage after falling down at his home,” said a doctor on the condition of anonymity. The 76-year-old Congress leader from Kerala was the defence minister during the UPA regime. Having served for more than seven years, Antony is the longest serving defence minister of India. Earlier this month, he had criticised the centre for not accommodating the Rohingyas and cited the example of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who “insisted on protecting” refugees from Bangladesh. “When more than one crore refugees came to India from Bangladesh in the 1970s, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi insisted on protecting them by disregarding the mighty seventh fleet of the US,” Antony had said while speaking at the launch of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists, Delhi.

Can’t compromise Hadiya’s safety, will move SC against college, says father

Kottayam/Salem: Hadiya’s father KM Ashokan on Wednesday said that he would move the Supreme Court against Sivaraj Homeopathy Medical College in Salem for allowing her to hold a news conference. He also questioned the college dean for allowing Hadiya to meet her Muslim husband Shefin Jehan in a few days, according to a report in news agancy. “The highest court of the country has sent her to the college to complete her education in a safe environment. If Jehan who has got an extremist link meets her it will compromise my daughter’s safety,” Ashokan was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times. “It seems the college is not taking enough measures to ensure her safety. I don’t want my daughter to revive her relations with Jehan who has got good connections with extremist elements like Islamic State. My whole fight is to block an extremist’s entry into my family,” he said. Ashokan held the college responsible for allowing Hadiya’s interaction with the media and questioned how a student could be allowed to do so.

S Korea worries N Korea could deal ‘fatal blow’ to 2018 Olympics

GNS News | Seoul: North Korea could deliver a “fatal

blow” to the 2018 Winter Olympics if it launches a missile or stages another provocation before the event, a South Korean minister warned Thursday. Unification Minister Cho Myoung-Gyon made the remarks as reports said annual South Korea-US military exercises might be postponed to avoid coinciding with the winter games and paralympics in South Korea’s Pyeongchang. “If the North provokes again at a time when the Olympic Games are imminent, it may deal a fatal blow to the Olympics,” he said at a forum in Seoul. “Therefore it is important to stage the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in a stable atmosphere”, he added. The world’s largest winter sports festival takes place from February 9 to 25, 2018. The Paralympics are scheduled to begin on March 9. Both will be held in the mountainous resort town of Pyeongchang, 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the tense border with North Korea.

SS News | New Delhi : The GDP for the July-September quarter showed a growth rate of 6.3 per cent after the previous quarter recorded a three-year low of 5.7 per cent. The growth of eight core sector industries, however, slowed to 4.7 per cent in October, down from 7.1 per cent recorded in the previous period. Meanwhile, according to government data, the country’s fiscal deficit crossed 96 per cent of budget estimates at October-end. “The economic activities which registered growth of over 6.0 percent in Q2 of 2017-18 over Q2 of 2016-17 are ‘manufacturing,’ ‘electricity, gas, water supply & other utility services and ‘trade, hotels, transport & communication and services related to broadcasting.’ The growth in the agriculture, forestry and fishing, mining and quarrying, construction, financial, insurance, real estate and professional services and Public administration, defence & other services’ is estimated to be 1.7 percent, 5.5 percent, 2.6 per cent, 5.7 percent and 6.0 percent respectively, during this period,” a press release from the government said. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Chief Statistician of India, Dr T C Anant, said: “GDP growth recovers to 6.3% in Q2 from a 3-year low of 5.7% in Q1. After almost 5 quarters of decline, GDP marks a reversal which is very encouraging.” “Manufacturing growth has been one of the main reasons for the encouraging growth rate figure of 6.3 per cent for 2nd Quarter,” he added. Answering a question on how the implementation of GST has impacted the GDP, Anant said “it introduced a measure of statistical challenge for us” while calculating the growth rate. He said the tax collection data is still being updated and current calculation was made on reported tax collections.

4 die in heavy rains in Kanyakumari as cyclone Ockhi heads for Lakshadweep SS News | Chennai: 4 people were killed as heavy rains and strong winds battered parts of Kanyakumari. India Meteorological

Department (IMD) has issued an alert of heavy rainfall in the town and several other places in Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Ockhi, lashing parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala with torrential rains and gusty winds, was approaching the Lakshadweep archipelago, a top official at the Ministry of Earth Sciences said on Thursday. Madhavan Rajeevan, secretary in the ministry, said the archipelago in the southern part of the Arabian Sea will start experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds from Friday. “It will hit the islands on December 2,” Rajeevan said. The cyclonic storm was “very likely” to move west-northwestwards towards Lakshadweep Islands and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours.

Centre plans to withdraw its ban on sale of cattle for slaughter SS News | New Delhi: The Central government plans to withdraw its ban on sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets, a senior official from the Ministry of Environment and Forests told news agancy. The ministry, in its May 23 notification, has sought feedback on changes made to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Market) Rules, 2017. The official told the national daily that they have sent a file to the Ministry of Law stating that the ministry is withdrawing the notification due to several issues and will be revising it. The official, however, said that the time-frame for the process has not yet been decided. After the notification in May, the BJP-led NDA government faced a heavy lash out by the Opposition and the cattle traders for attempting to impose the nationwide ban on ideological grounds. The ban on the sale of cattle for slaughter, implemented on May 23, not only affected the small traders in the market but also gave rise to vigilantism which took lives of many during the past few months. Farmers, too, opposed the move to restrict trade in markets only to animals meant for agricultural use, saying they cannot directly access slaughterhouses.

Air India disinvestment: SpiceJet, Jet Airways queue up to bid for Maharaja SS News | Mumbai: Air

India seems to have found two more takers as SpiceJet and Jet Airways boarded the flight to bid for the debt-reeling airline. This comes after IndiGo and Tata Group expressed their interests in the national airline. “The economics of the game will change completely for whichever airline gets Air India. With its 14 per cent domestic and 17-18 per cent international market share, getting AI

will be a paradigm shift for the successful bidder. Other airlines like Jet and possibly even SpiceJet will have no option but to bid for AI,” a top government official familiar with the process.

However, a SpiceJet is “too small” to bid for the national airline, said an official of the company. Decision will be taken on the bidding once the terms are known, the official added.

T

he tendency to merely list our resistance capability on every anniversary of the 26/11 attack should be replaced by an analysis of whether our preventive machinery is able to match the changing terrorist methodology. Unfortunately, governments follow linear thinking. We are no exception. What appear in our discourses are lists of new special squads, better weaponry, satellite imagery, coastal radars and transponders to prevent coastal infiltration. No doubt these are relevant in certain situations but is our counter-terrorist architecture flexible enough to match or surpass the exponential thinking of terrorists? Our experience is that it is not. In fact, this is the problem with other governments too. That is why there is a chorus of protests across the globe that terrorists are 10 steps ahead of counter terrorism (CT) machineries. Globally, a helplessness is growing in countering the vehicle-mowing-down tactics of Islamic State (IS), first seen in Nice on July 14, 2016 — it caused as much shock as al Qaeda’s 9/11 attack although only 86 were killed. It was also more innovative as “low cost terrorism” tactics than using passenger planes by al Qaeda on 9/11. This was followed by similar killings in Berlin, London (Westminster), Stockholm, London Bridge, Barcelona and New York — in all they claimed140 lives. The “citizens meeting” convened by EU Security Commissioner Sir Julian King in Nice on September 28 and attended by Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi could not come to any concrete solution to prevent such a use of public spaces by IS killers. On November 14, a 10-minute Daulat-ul-Islamia audio clip in Malayalam from one Rashid Abdullah, originally from Kasaragod in Kerala, was sent over by “telegram” from Afghanistan exhorting his followers to mow down crowds at the forthcoming Thrissur Pooram festival or at the Kumbh Mela. On November 11, there were media reports that over 100 people from Kerala are suspected to have joined the IS. Our weakest point is in not having any reliable record of our overseas workers who are the source of such recruitment. The former Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA), which was trying to collect such data during the UPA government’s tenure, was merged with the Ministry of External Affairs after the present NDA government took over. This was a retrograde step as a single-point high-level attention on our overseas workers that had been going on since 2004 was relegated to a minor wing of our vast diplomatic apparatus due to inter-ministerial squabbles.Mumbai, which beefed up resistance capability since 26/11, was surprised again on July 13, 2011 when terrorists changed tactics and reverted to serial bomb attacks.

Akshay Kumar: After doing films with a social message, I now want to do a horror comedy

K

hiladiyon Ka Khiladi Akshay Kumar, who attended the closing ceremony of the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), spoke about the kind of film he wants to do after doing a number of films that had social messages. Akshay Kumar first highlighted the importance of films that have social messages. He said, “I think it is very important to do films that talk to people and give them a message in a commercial way. When I did Toilet Ek Prem Katha, we commercially sent a message to each and every member of the audience that it is important for every house to have a toilet. We showed it in a comic way. We also showed a love story.” “When a documentary is made, not many people watch it. So, I thought it is more important today than ever to do something for my country and this (making films with a social message) is the best way to do it. Since I am in the industry, I want to show people something new.” Akshay added. When he was further asked that after doing comedy, social and romantic films, what is that one genre that he really looks forward to in the near future. To this, the actor said that he wants to do a horror-comedy. He said, “I really like horror comedy. I want to do a film like Bhool Bhulaiyaa. I want to work in a film like that. I am looking for a good script.” It would be interesting to see Akshay doing a horror-comedy s o o n just like his contemporary Ajay Devgn, who gave a sleeper hit in Golmaal Again, which was also a horror comedy.

ondemning the outcry and death threats against Bollywood star Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali over their upcoming film Padmavati, actor Esha Gupta says such an extreme reaction is never given when something as grave as rape happens in India. Padmavati, based on the life of queen Padmini, has been in the eye of the storm from past one year with various Rajput groups alleging Sanjay Leela Bhansali has distorted history. From demands to ban the film to now open death threats (including from political groups), things have only gotten uglier for the team of Padmavati. When asked about her opinion, Esha told mediapersons, “In India, right now no one says, ‘We will ban this or that,’ when rape happens but a film is getting so much mileage because even these people know that they will get mileage out of a movie but not out of a rape that happens.

It’s a fantastic time for actors in the industry: Kajol

K

ajol believes there is more scope for actors to experiment as the audiences are willing to see them in different roles. The star, known for her commercial hits such as “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “My Name is Khan”, said actors can get away with playing all kind of roles now. When asked whether it was a difficult time for directors and actors to be a part of historical films in the wake of “Padmavati”, Kajol told news aganacy, “I would not like to comment on ‘Padmavati’ issue, per se. (But) I don’t think it is a difficult time for actors to work in a certain kind of film.” “It is a perfect time for actors to do any kind of films that they like. You can see a younger actor playing an older role and vice versa and get away with it. People are willing to accept you and it is a fantastic time and space for actors to do any kind of film.” Bhansali’s film is facing protests from various Rajput groups and politicians. The film was earlier scheduled to be released on December 1 but the makers had to defer the release.

The reason why Alia chose not to do Prabhas’ Saaho revealed

B

efore Shraddha Kapoor was finalised as the lead in Prabhas’s Saaho, the makers had approached Alia Bhatt to play Prabhas’ romantic interest in the action thriller. The Saaho team was excited about casting Alia. In fact, even her mentor Karan Johar wanted Alia to take up the role. However, considering the heroine has barely any scenes in the film in comparison to Prabhas, Alia refused to be a part of the film, a source revealed as per the report in Bollywoodlife. com. “Alia is currently busy setting a league of her own by taking up some really good performance -oriented roles. So at a stage when she’s setting such a bright example as far as her film choices are concerned, she doesn’t want to break the chain by doing a film where she is more like a supporting cast. Even her family approved of her decision and have no regrets whatsoever,” a source stated. The role finally bagged by ‘Half Girlfriend’ star Shraddha Kapoor. A few months earlier, Alia was asked, who her favourite South Indian actor was. She promptly replied, “Prabhas.” Lets hope the two powerhouse performers do something together bigger in the future. The film that stars Jackie Shroff, Chunky Pandey, Mandira Bedi and Neil Nitin Mukesh in the supporting star-cast is slated for release in 2018.

Why the BCCI was rapped on the knuckles?

Neymar and Edinson Cavani, Paris St Germain’s deadly double act, again delivered a goal apiece in a sluggish 2-0 victory over Troyes

SS News | New Delhi:

The Competition Commission of India (CCI), the country’s fair trade watchdog, imposed a fine of Rs 52.24 crore on the BCCI on Wednesday for utilising their dominant position in the cricket market to monopolise the organisation of T20 leagues. The issue relates to the IPL media rights which Star India won with a bid of over Rs 16,000 crore. The CCI has ruled that the Indian board’s decision to accept the demand of the broadcasters vying for the rights to include a non-compete clause, which eliminates the possibility of anyone bar the BCCI organising a professional T20 league or event in India, in the tender was a clear abuse of its powerful position in the market. This denied market access to anybody other than the BCCI to hold a similar league. Hence, it was a move that basically killed any chance of competition to the IPL.

Neymar and Cavani strike again as PSG go 10 points clear

SS News | New Delhi: Neymar and Edinson Cavani, Paris St Germain’s deadly double act, again delivered a goal apiece in a sluggish 2-0 victory over Troyes that took them 10 points clear of their Ligue 1 challengers on Wednesday. While their nearest chasers lost, Olympique Lyonnais succumbing 2-1 at home to struggling Lille and Monaco falling 1-0 at Nantes after a last-gasp Lucas Lima thunderbolt, PSG marched on without ever hitting top gear. They left it late as a brilliant Neymar strike in the 73rd minute, his 15th PSG goal in all competitions, eased nerves at the Parc des Princes before the Brazilian set up Cavani, who had a first-half penalty saved, to score in stoppage time. The pair had a spirited debate over who should take the penalty, with Cavani winning the argument, but they worked in perfect harmony for the Uruguayan’s 23rd goal, stretching his lead as top marksman in Europe’s major leagues this season. The losses for Lyon and Monaco enabled Olympique de Marseille, with their emphatic 3-0 win at bottom club Metz, to move into second place but they are 10 points adrift of unbeaten PSG, who moved on to 41 points after 15 games. Third-placed Lyon and Monaco, both on 29 points, were left two points behind Marseille. PSG had seemed out of sorts against mid-table opponents they had hammered 9-0 in their last meeting when sealing the title in 2016, but looked to be in charge once Cavani earned the penalty with a theatrical fall under Karim Azamoum’s shirt tug. Just as during a game against Lyon in September when the pair argued over who should take the set-piece duties,

Ashes 2017: Jimmy Anderson likes England’s chances in pink-ball Adelaide test SS News | New Delhi: England

swing bowler Jimmy Anderson says he’s confident he can make a pink ball behave just like a red one when the historic first day-night Ashes test against Australia begins Saturday at the Adelaide Oval. Bowler-friendly conditions are expected. Australia won the first of five tests between the teams by 10 wickets at the Gabba in Brisbane. “The red Kookaburra and the pink … are not that different,” Anderson said Thursday. “From a bowler’s point of view … we will go about it the same way.” The pink ball has swung markedly, particularly at night, in past day-night tests in the South Australian capital. Anderson and his pace-bowling colleagues also found conditions to their liking in England’s day-night tour game in Adelaide before the Ashes series.

GNS News | New Delhi: Mirabai Chanu became only the second Indian (after Karnam Malleswari) to win the gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, USA on Thursday. This was after she lifted a new world record of 194kg (85 snatch and 109 C&J) in women’s 48kg category. After achieving the feat Chanu was left in tears as he went up to the podium to collect her medal. Since last year’s mediocre performance at the Rio Olympics, the 23-year-old from Imphal put in a lot of effort to improve her overall strength and is deservedly reaping the benefits. Earlier former Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleshwari had bagged the gold in 1994 and 1995. Meanwhile, in September this year, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu had qualified for Commonwealth Games (2018) after winning a gold at the Commonwealth Senior (men & women) weightlifting championships held at Gold Coast, Australia. Incidentally, she also broke the Commonwealth record in snatch event with a lift of 85kg, bettering her own record by one kilogram.

Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal retires from cricket, criticises ICC

SS News | New Delhi: Pakistan’s ace spinner Saeed Ajmal has brought the

curtains down on his cricket career with a “heavy heart”, criticising the ICC’s protocol to assess bowling actions on his way out. After a successful but controversial career, off-spinner Ajmal finished with 178 wickets in 35 Tests, the last of which was at Galle in Sri Lanka in 2014, where his bowling action was reported for a second time. His action was first reported during an ODI series against Australia in the UAE in 2009. His time in the limelight cut short following a temporary ban for chucking, Ajmal returned to the sport in 2015 with a remodelled action but without much success. “I am retiring today and at 40 years of age I thought it is now time for me to make way for younger players. I got this feeling I was being considered extra baggage even in domestic teams and I didn’t want to go out losing my respect,” Ajmal told news agancy in an interview. “I am retiring with a heavy heart because firstly I think the ICC’s protocol is too harsh and if all bowlers today playing international cricket are tested I am sure at least 90 percent will fail to clear this protocol,” Ajmal said. He felt that if the Pakistan Cricket Board had fought his case more vociferously at the ICC, he would have left a satisfied man.

She also picked up her third World Championship medal, earning a silver after an epic 110-minute final against Nozomi Okuhara of Japan. The results took her to as high as world no 2, the same rank Srikanth had achieved after his wins. The pair, however, have since dropped a spot. While Srikanth’s ranking came down due to him skipping the Super Series in China and Hong Kong, Sindhu, who got her name on the title in two Super Series events this year, fought against Tai Tzu Ying in the Hong Kong Super Series final.

US pushes China to cut off oil supply to North Korea

GNS News Agency | Washington DC: The United States Thursday urged China to cut off crude oil shipments to North Korea and pressed all countries to isolate Kim Jong-Un’s regime by cutting off all diplomatic and trade ties. US Ambassador Nikki Haley told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council that North Korea’s latest test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) “demands that countries further isolate the Kim regime.” During a phone conversation earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump asked President Xi Jinping to cut off China’s crude oil supplies to North Korea, a move that would deal a crippling blow to North Korea’s economy.

Trump told the Chinese leader “that we have come to the point that China must cut off the oil from North Korea,” Haley said. “That would be a pivotal step in the world’s effort to stop this international pariah,” she said. Haley also called “on all nations to cut off all ties with North Korea” and said the Security Council should take away North Korea’s voting rights at the United Nations. The

Rearing indigenous cattle is easier said than done; this farmer shows how it can be profitable

GNS News | Halvad : Parev, 13, produced 5,000 litres of milk during her seventh lactation cycle last year. Now, in her eighth, she’s among the 150 Gir cows — that includes 40 calves and heifers below 2 years of age, and 35 lactating animals — owned by Chinubhai Khetasibhai Patel. All have distinct names and neat ear tags for identification. Patel’s dairy farm — just across the road from the agriculture produce market committee mandi at Halvad in Gujarat’s Morbi district — also has separate enclosures for the cows currently inmilk, those who are pregnant, calves and heifers, and three bulls. “It is necessary for proper feed management. Each animal has a different requirement, depending on its age and stage of lactation or pregnancy,” explains the 59-year-old, who is a bachelor in economics from Ahmedabad’s H K Arts College. Patel’s Gir cows yield an average of 3,000 litres over a 300-day lactation period, as against the normal 2,000 levels for this indigenous cattle breed. Moreover, he has brought down their age of first calving to below three years, compared to the 4-5 years under usual grazing conditions. “If you follow scientific feeding and herd management practices, a cow can be inseminated (at Patel’s Parishram Bagh Gaushala, this is done naturally by bulls) in 24 months.

council was meeting at the request of the United States, Japan and South Korea to consider next steps after three rounds of sanctions adopted in 2016 failed to push North Korea to change course. Haley said the ICBM launch had raised the threat of war. “The dictator of North Korea made a choice yesterday that brings the world closer to war, not farther from it.

www.sunvillasamachar.com Chilling technology: White Revolution – Part II GNS News | Bhuj : Since the start of this century, milk procurement by Gujarat’s dairy cooperatives has more than trebled to over 150 lakh litres per day (LLPD), while spreading to newer areas, including in Saurashtra and Kutch. Key to this has been a steady rise in procurement prices, coupled with a focus on expanding the market for the state’s milk producers. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation’s (GCMMF) sales of ‘Amul’ liquid milk in the National Capital Region alone is around 31 LLPD, half of which is transported all the way from Gujarat at Rs 2-2.5 per litre and the balance sourced from nearby states. But equally important has been the role of bulk milk coolers (BMC), enabled by 24-hour electricity, and improved road infrastructure. The BMCs, with average capacity of 3,000-5,000 litres and going up to 10,000 litres, allow the milk to be chilled either at the original procurement centre itself or a neighbouring village society. In the pre-BMC era, milk had to be brought to a chilling centre latest by 11 in the morning to avoid spoilage.

SEWA Cooperative Federation’s Silver Jubilee

SS News | Ahmedabad: SEWA Cooperative Federation celebrated its Silver Jubilee on November 30th, 2017 in Ahmedabad with more than 200 women cooperative leaders from all over the state. The Federation has been organising women into collectives, registering them as primary women’s cooperatives, helping the elected boards to run their own cooperatives, and supporting the cooperatives by capacity-building efforts including structured training programmes and exposure visits. The Federation also has undertaken important action for policy change. This includes simplifying processes to reach financial services to women’s cooperatives through the National Cooperative Development Corporation, NCDC. It has worked to ensure that the many issues faced by women’s cooperatives reach legislators and policymakers, which will eventually result in an enabling environment for these decentralised, membership-based economic organisations. The Federation was promoted by the Self-Employed Women’s Association, SEWA, a national union of 15 lakh informal women workers. SEWA organised them into cooperatives, then developed their own federation in 1992, also registered as a cooperative. Today 106 cooperatives of the state constitute the Gujarat State Mahila SEWA Cooperative Federation. There are a total of 3,00,000 lakh women reached by the Federation and its member cooperatives with a total turn-over of Rs 400 Crores. SEWA Bank is the first and largest of the member cooperatives with a total turn-over of about Rs 350 Crores. The majority of the member cooperatives of the Federation are financially viable and also owned and run by the members themselves who are elected to their boards.

In a 108-second video post on Facebook, Chhotu Vasava accused the BJP of inflicting atrocities on “people of his tribal constituency” without specifying any caste.

Former JD(U) leader Chhotu Vasava posts video on FB citing threat to life from BJP Agency | Vadodara : Former JD(U) leader Chhotu Vasava on Wednesday alleged that there is a threat to his life from the BJP, especially from the “Vijay Rupani government and party’s national president Amit Shah”. In a 108-second video post on Facebook, the six-time Jhagadia MLA accused the BJP of inflicting atrocities on “people of his tribal constituency” without specifying any caste. “They have showered bullets on revolutionaries and killed people,” he said in his post. Vasava then questioned the government decision to depute recently-reinstated IPS officer Abhay Chudasma as the Vadodara Range IG. Bharuch comes under Vadodara range. “They have posted Chudasma

in Vadodara… so that they can use him to harass my men and pose a threat to my life. They have begun surveying the area and my house. If there is something called the Election Commission (EC) in Gujarat, they should take cognizance of the situation and provide me security. The BJP will not get even a single vote in this area and in order to seek revenge of the Rajya Sabha polls, where

my vote caused them a defeat, Amit Shah, can resort to any means,” he alleged. Vasava told The Indian Express he had even written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh soon after the RS polls, seeking additional security. BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said the party is yet to see Vasava’s video. Another BJP leader said: “Vasava is known for his histrionics.”

INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH, MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE AND PARTNERS LAUNCH INDIA HYPERTENSION MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE TO REDUCE DISABILITY AND DEATH RELATED TO HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE SS News | Ahmedabad : The Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) and Secretary, Department of Health Research (DHR) and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) launched the India Hypertension Management Initiative (IHMI). The IHMI aims to reduce disability and death related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in India, by improving the control of high blood pressure (hypertension), reducing salt consumption and eliminating artificial trans-fats, leading risk factors for CVD. IHMI is a collaborative project between ICMR, MoHFW, State Governments, World Health Organization (WHO), and Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies. A launch event at the Ministry today was co- chaired by Ms Preeti Sudan (MOHFW Health Secretary), Dr. Soumya Swaminathan (Secretary, DHR and DG, ICMR) and speakers included Mr Manoj Jhalani (AS, MD, NHM), Dr BD Athani (Special DGHS), Mr Pawan Aggarwal ( CEO, FSSAI), Dr Henk Bekedam, WHO India Representative, Dr Alka Aggarwal

Singh, Country Director for Vital Strategies, State Secretaries and higher state and ICMR officials also joined the event. Around 200 million adults in India have high blood pressure, yet control rates for the condition remain low. Studies suggest that in rural areas in India, only one quarter of people with hypertension are aware of their condition, and only around 10 percent have their blood pressure controlled. In urban areas, around 40 percent of people with hypertension are aware of their condition, and

only around 20 percent have their blood pressure controlled1.This initiative aims to strengthen the cardiovascular disease component of the government’s National Program for Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS). It will focus on strengthening hypertension management and monitoring at the primary health care level, within the existing healthcare system, and is aligned with WHO’s Global HEARTS Initiative and national guidelines.

BJP may be finally reaching out to Muslims in Gujarat

SS New | Ahmedabad: Dariapur, once infamous as the “den” of underworld Gujarati don Abdul Latif Shaikh who was killed in a police encounter in 1997, last weekend played host BJP’s most powerful leader, Amit Shah. Shah picked this Muslim dominant neighbourhood in the 600 year old walled city of Ahmedabad for the BJP’s booth networking event – ‘Mann ki baat, chai ke saath’, to fix the finer arithmetic for the Gujarat assembly elections. That the BJP would appropriate a former bastion of a gangster, Latif, who won five municipal corporation seats once in the 1980s from jail and swung fortunes for politicians, should not come as a surprise when the party is pulling out all the stops to achieve the 150-seat target. Visuals of a few men wearing skull caps in the crowd at Shah’s tea event were streamed out of Dariapur, as they “watched” prime minister Narendra Modi’s monthly monologue on radio on a huge screen. The BJP began this purported connect with Ahmedabad’s traditional Muslim neighbourhood, even as Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi undertook road shows across Gujarat, sipping tea at wayside stalls along with the traditional fried gram flour snackthe ubiquitous ganthiya – as his party strategists carefully kept any

Muslim symbolism out of his tour plan. Riding on the Patidar quota agitation led by Hardik Patel, the Congress is playing a wild “soft-Hindutva” card this time, hoping to wean away a huge chunk of Patel votes from the BJP. In its internal meetings Muslims have been advised to “keep a low profile”, but assured the Congress is staunchly with them. But the saffron BJP is also elbowing its way into the space created by this Congress distancing, albeit by avoiding any open connect with Muslims. The Muslim vote has suddenly become critical to the BJP in Gujarat after the apparent disenchantment of the Patidar community. The party is hard-selling its win in Uttar Pradesh as part owing to “Muslims supporting Modi”. And Shah, the claimed architect of this victory, showcased himself as being present in a part of Ahmedabad that was founded by a Muslim emperor — his presence meant to impact at least the two seats in the walled city, Dariapur and Jamalpur-Khadia. Even when Latif was alive, this constituency that then went by the name of Dariapur-Kazipur, was won by the BJP. This continued till 2012 and post-delimitation, when Congress’s Gyasuddin Shaikh wrested it and Bharat Barot who had been MLA from Dariapur for four terms since 1990, lost.
