Short News Rajpal Yadav sentenced to three-month civil prison in loan recovery case New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Friday sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to three-month civil prison for failing to repay a loan of Rs 5 crore, which Yadav and his wife Radha had taken in 2010 to make his directorial debut with Hindi film ‘Ata Pata Laapata’, ANI reported. The actor was immediately taken into custody by Delhi Police. In April this year, a Delhi court had sentenced Yadav to six months jail and also slapped a fine of Rs 11.2 crore on him, observing that the actor was convicted in seven cases of bouncing cheques and said that he will pay a fine of Rs 1.6 crore for each case. However, the court subsequently granted him bail after he furnished a personal bond of Rs 50,000. Yadav had spent four days in jail from December 3, 2013, till December 6, 2013, after which a division bench of the High Court had suspended the sentence on his appeal.

Sea of distressed farmers march to Parliament Street, opposition parties join in show of strength

New Delhi : A sea of farmers descended on Parliament Street Friday to press for their demands, including debt relief and remunerative prices for their produce. The farmers, who have been camping at the Ramlila ground since Thursday, began their march to Parliament Street around 10.30 am amid heavy police deployment, only to be stopped at the Parliament Street police station. The kisan rally also witnessed opposition leaders rallying behind the protest march with Congress president Rahul Gandhi and

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal castigating the Narendra Modiled central government over the prevailing rural distress. Chanting slogans and flashing flags, thousands of farmers, banded under the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) trooped into the national capital from nearly 22 states with a clutch of demands. Their list of demands include implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, loan waivers, and reduction in prices of fertilisers and diesel for which

they are seeking a special session with the Parliament. Agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan on Friday told news agency PTI that the UPA government in 2007 did not take action on the National Policy for Farmers, that seeks to improve the economic viability of farming. PTI quoted the scientist as saying, “The demand for loan waiver comes from the present non-remunerative nature of farming and is indicative of the fact that economic viability is as important to farmers as to industrialists.”

G-20 summit: PM Modi meets Trump ahead of first trilateral talks with Japan’s Abe

Sabarimala: BJP shifts focus, plans hunger strike outside secretariat New Delhi : Even as the situation cools in Sabarimala, the BJP, which had earlier announced an action plan for a protest at the temple till December 15, has changed tack. On Monday, party general secretary A N Radhakrishnan will begin an indefinite hunger strike in front of the state secretariat demanding that fabricated cases against party leaders be withdrawn and for better facilities for pilgrims at Sabarimala. Sabarimala premises had witnessed tense days on several occasions in the last month after devotees, Hindu organisations and the BJP protested against young women’s entry to the temple following a recent verdict of the Supreme Court. The indefinite hunger strike was not part of the BJP’s Sabarimala action plan in December, which included collecting 1 crore signatures from across the state, honouring senior Sabarimala pilgrims (known as guru swamis), and giving memberships to those who join the party over the temple issue. The party had identified leaders from across the state who would go to Sabarimala till the second week of December to give leadership to “devotees who reach the shrine to protect the traditions and rituals at the temple”.

‘wreak havoc ‘ in 2019 polls: Kejriwal to Modi

New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “stabbed farmers in the back” by not fulfilling the promises made to them and warned him that they would “wreak havoc” in 2019 general elections if those promises are not kept. The AAP chief joined several leaders from opposition parties at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, where thousands of farmers from across the country have gathered to press for their demands, including debt relief and remunerative prices for their produce. In his address at the venue, Kejriwal claimed that the Centre had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying it would not implement the M S Swaminathan Commission report. “The government had made a number of promises to farmers in the last election (2014), but it has not fulfilled those promises. By not implementing the Swaminathan Commission report, Modi ji has stabbed the farmers in the back (‘kisano ke peeth mey chhura bhonka hai’),” he alleged.

He was reacting to Imran Khan’s statement on France and Germany staying together.

For Pakistan to stay together with India, it will first have to become a secular state

Pune : Reacting to the statement by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan that if France and Germany can stay together why not India and Pakistan, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said that for Pakistan to stay together with India, it will first have to become a secular state. General Rawat made the statement while interacting with the media on the sidelines of the Passing Out Parade of 135th course of National Defence Academy in Pune, which he reviewed on Friday morning. “For this idea

of countries coming together, Pakistan will have to look at their own internal situation. Pakistan has made itself into an Islamic State. If they have to stay

together with India, they will have to become a secular state. We are a secular state. How can we stay together, when they say they are an Islamic State and there is no role for anyone else,” Gen Rawat said. When asked about Khan’s statement that if India takes one step Pakistan will take two, Gen Rawat said, “India has taken the first step several times. At least show us one step from your side. Terrorism is growing in your country. At least show us some action from your side against terrorism.”

China’s ageing problem is a serious threat to growth

The trade war between the US and China is obscuring a key fact: economic growth for both countries will be significantly slower than in the past, for the simple reason that their populations are ageing rapidly. Let’s start with the facts on ageing. The share of the US population aged 65 or above is expected to rise to 21% in 2050 from 13% in 2010. In China, it is expected to rise much more rapidly over that period, to 24% from 8%. The result of these ageing populations is slower workforce growth. The potential labour force in the US grew by 2.5% per year between 1974 and 1981. It has been declining since, because of ageing, and is expected to be just 0.5% per year over the next decade. In China, the situation is even direr: The workforce has actually fallen recently. So the US is struggling with a lower but still positive growth rate, while China has to cope with almost no growth and perhaps some declines. The impact of the slower growth in the workforce, in turn, is lower total economic growth. Since economic expansion is arithmetically the sum of workforce growth and labour productivity growth, achieving the same top-line growth as the population ages would require substantially higher productivity growth rates. While higher productivity growth would be welcome, no one really knows how to spur it. So it is worth turning our attention back to the demographic component, with the focus on China, where population ageing is more acute. The key driver of the rapidly ageing Chinese population is a low number of births per female. To avoid a decline in a population without immigration, the total fertility rate (that is, the average number of children per female throughout her childbearing years) needs to be slightly above two. In 1960, the fertility rate in China was almost six. It is now about 1.5. One commonly cited reason for the dramatic decline was the infamous one-child policy, limiting couples to one child each, put in place in 1979. Yet the Chinese fertility rate was declining sharply even before the policy was put in place, in part because of an earlier “longer, later, fewer” discouragement of larger families (that people should marry later, wait longer between children, and have fewer of them). Indeed, research suggests that three-quarters of the fertility rate decline since 1970 was not formally related to the one-child policy, even if it was importantly driven by other formal and informal government action.

Gold is trading at Rs 31,475 per 10 gram amid weak trend overseas.

Gold prices tumble by Rs 65 to Rs 31,475 per 10 gram

New Delhi: Extending losses for the third straight day, gold prices Friday fell by Rs 65 to Rs 31,475 per 10 gram amid weak trend overseas. The yellow metal had shed Rs 310 in the past two days. Besides, silver prices lost Rs 85 to Rs 37,075 per kg on weak demand from industrial units and coin makers. Traders said appreciating rupee as well as weak demand in the overseas market led to a slide in gold prices. Fall in demand from local jewellers as well as retailers kept pressure on the prices. The rupee rose to a 3-month high of 69.80 against the US dollar, up 5 paise as compared with the previous close, in intra-day

trade in the forex market. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity fell further by Rs 65 each to Rs 31,475 and Rs 31,325 per 10 gram, respectively. Sovereign gold, however, held steady

at Rs 24,700 per piece of 8 gram. Globally, gold traded at USD 1,224.10 an ounce in New York, while silver was at USD 14.31 an ounce. Meanwhile, silver ready recovered by 85 to Rs 37,075 per

kg, and weekly-based delivery increased by Rs 258 to Rs 35,606 per kg. Silver coins, however, ruled flat at Rs 72,000 for buying and Rs 73,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

The price reduction comes soon after six consecutive monthly hikes in rates since June. Prior to this price cut, rates had gone up by Rs 14.13 per cylinder since then.

Subsidised LPG price cut by Rs 6.5; market price cut by Rs 133

New Delhi : Domestic cooking gas (LPG) price Friday was cut by Rs 6.52 per cylinder on account of tax impact on the reduced market rate for the fuel. A 14.2-kg subsidised LPG cylinder will cost Rs 500.90 in the national capital from midnight tonight as against Rs 507.42 currently, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the country’s largest fuel retailer, said in a statement. The price reduction comes soon after six consecutive monthly hikes in rates since June. Prior

to this price cut, rates had gone up by Rs 14.13 per cylinder since then. Subsidised LPG rates were last hiked by Rs 2.94 per cylinder with effect from November 1. IOC said nonsubsidised or market priced LPG rates have been cut by a steep Rs 133 per cylinder to reflect fall in international oil rates and strengthening of the rupee. It will now cost Rs 809.50 per 14.2-kg bottle in Delhi. All LPG consumers have to buy the fuel at market price. The government,

however, subsidises 12 cylinders of 14.2-kg each per households in a year by providing the subsidy amount directly in bank accounts

of users. This subsidy amount varies from month to month depending on the changes in the average international benchmark

LPG rate and foreign exchange rate. When international rates move up, the government provides a higher subsidy. And when they come down, subsidy is cut. As per tax rules, GST on LPG has to be calculated at the market rate of the fuel. The government may choose to subsidise a part of the price but tax will have to be paid at market rates. So, with the fall in market price or non-subsidised LPG price, the tax incidence on subsidised cooking fuel has also come down, leading

to the current price reduction. “Accordingly, the upfront cash payment by the consumer for purchase of domestic LPG refill will reduce by Rs 133 cylinder, i.e. from Rs 942.50 per cylinder to Rs 809.50 cylinder in December, 2018 in Delhi market,” IOC said. Subsidised cooking gas consumers will get Rs 308.60 per cylinder subsidy in their bank accounts for the month of December. The subsidy transfer in the customer’s bank account has been reduced from Rs 433.66 in November.

She had around 71 acres of land in the Chansad area and gave 11.94 hectare to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) at a cost of Rs. 30234.3. “She flew down

specially to hand over the land for the project and we are extremely grateful to her for having agreed to it. She returned to Germany where she lives with her son and runs a restaurant. This stretch of land is the first piece of land which we have acquired for the project in the state,” NHSRCL spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar said. The 508-kilometre corridor

would require around 1,400 hectares of land in Gujarat and Maharashtra, of which 1,120 hectares is privately owned. Around 6,000 land owners will have to be compensated. Claiming that his government was putting in place a new evaluation system for ranking the performance of officers, Chandrababu Naidu said the central government has made it “so worst.”

Chandrababu Naidu Says “Substandard” Gujarat Bureaucrats Posted At Centre

AMARAVATI: TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday alleged that “substandard” bureaucrats from the Gujarat cadre, holding key central government posts, have destroyed the governance system and left the entire administration demoralised. The all-India bureaucracy has also become “substandard” because these “inefficient” bureaucrats from Gujarat have been appointed to crucial posts at the centre, Mr Naidu said addressing a day-long conference of district collectors in Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati. “Gujarat is a small state. Delhi is a big place. It has to deal with 29 states. If all the people (officers) are

brought from a small place, you will have all inefficient people,” the Andhra Pradesh chief minister said. Mr Naidu claimed a majority of Gujarat officers were in crucial positions at the centre and they were “substandard”. Because “these people are substandard, all India level

bureaucracy has also become substandard”, the chief minister said. The issue came up during a presentation on performance ranking of government officers. Claiming that his government was putting in place a new evaluation system for ranking the performance

of officers, Mr Naidu said the central government has made it “so worst.” “There is a committee of five retired officers, which calls up five officers (known to them) and ask five questions. Based on this (serving) officers are ranked. What is this system? Is it right?” the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief asked. Noting that the all India bureaucracy system was “very strong”, he said previously, the best people from the states were chosen and positioned in right places (at the centre). “But that system has now been destroyed,” Naidu said.He also found fault with the ‘lateral entry system’ introduced by the government of India.

Tulsi Gabbard to hear from Indian-Americans on possibility of a Hindu running for US presidency in 2020

German leader Merkel on her way to G20 after plane problem Berlin : German Chancellor Angela Merkel was finally on her way to Argentina Friday for the Group of 20 (G-20) Summit after a technical problem with her plane forced her to change plans and stay overnight in Bonn. Merkel’s office said that she and a small delegation, including the finance minister took a different government plane to Madrid on Friday morning, and then boarded a commercial flight to Buenos Aires. Merkel was en route Thursday night on an air force Airbus A340, but turned around over the Netherlands after the captain reported a technical problem. The plane was diverted to the CologneBonn airport and landed without

incident. Air force Col Guido Henrich said the problem was caused by the failure of an electrical distributor box, which affected the radio system and also a fuel system, meaning that the plane couldn’t dump fuel. The part was replaced and the plane is now functional again, he said. The plane landed at Cologne-Bonn with most of the fuel for its planned trans-Atlantic flight on board, making it heavier than normal and causing one brake to overheat slightly as it came to a stop on the runway, Henrich said. He stressed, however, that there was no danger to the people on board. The plane was able to communicate by satellite despite the problem with its radio system.

Washington : Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu lawmaker in the US Congress, is seeking views from eminent Indian-Americans from across the country on the possibility of a Hindu running for American presidency amid reports that she is considering to run for the White House in 2020. Those familiar with the 37-year-old Democratic lawmaker from Hawaii said that a formal announcement could be weeks away or even before the end of the year. If she announces her candidature, she would be the first ever Hindu to be seeking presidential ticket from either of the two major political parties of the US – Democratic and the Republican. On Thursday, over half-a-dozen eminent Hindu-Americans wrote an email to some of the top members of the community from across the country to share their “thoughts” with Gabbard on “the possibility of a Hindu running for the US Presidency” for the first time in history and the “impact” that could have on the Hindu-American community at large.

Donald Trump says Russian business efforts ‘very legal and very cool’

Washington : US President Donald Trump on Friday defended his decision to seek a business deal in Russia in 2016 even as he pursued the Republican presidential nomination, calling it “very legal” and “very cool” to keep running his business while campaigning. In a series of tweets from Buenos Aires, where he is attending the G20 summit, Trump also said he had only “lightly looked” at a real estate project “somewhere in Russia” but that nothing had come of the effort. A second guilty plea on Thursday by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer, has raised new questions about Trump’s dealings with Russia while he was also establishing Republican foreign policy during his run

for the presidency. Trump repeatedly has said he had no ties to Russia. The US Special Counsel’s Office is investigating Moscow for alleged interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with Trump’s campaign. Russia has denied US intelligence conclusions that it meddled and Trump has frequently decried the investigation as a “witch hunt.” Both have denied any collusion. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team has brought charges or secured convictions against more than two dozen Russian nationals and entities, as well as a number of Trump’s associates, including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who faced a hearing on Friday morning to schedule his sentencing.
