Nearly eight months after it swept the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the ruling BJP continued its winning streak in the civic polls -bagging 14 of the 16 mayoral seats, and also a sizeable chunk of the Nagar Palika and Panchayat posts, coming as a boost to the party ahead of the Gujarat polls. Still nursing the bruises of the assembly election defeat, the BSP

The US looked at India as a strategic partner and the relations between the two countries stood on their own merit and were not directed towards “any one country” in the south Asian region, a senior US State Department official said here today. The two countries would work together not only now, but also in the future, to promote peace and prosperity in the region, Thomas Vajda, the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, the US Department of State, said. emerged better than the other parties in the opposition - the SP and Congress, which lost badly even in its stronghold of Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Rahul Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the party unit in Uttar Pradesh, saying development has triumphed once again in the country. “Many congratulations to CM Yogi Adityanath & all party workers. This win

motivates us to work even harder for people’s betterment,” he tweeted. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath credited the victory to BJP workers who “worked to communicate the party agenda of development to all”. He took a dig at Congress, saying a party which was dreaming to win in Gujarat has floundered in Uttar Pradesh. In his first comments after the BJP surged ahead to a decisive victo-

ry in the civic polls, Adityanath said the results showed that the people had faith in the party and the policies pursued by the central and the state governments. The BJP won 14 mayoral seats, while the BSP won two. BJP won in Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Agra, Firozabad, Ayodhya, Mathura, Lucknow, Kanpur, Saharanpur Jhansi and Bareilly, and Moradabad. The BSP won in Aligarh and Meerut. BJP’s Sanyukta Bhatia will be Lucknow’s first woman Mayor. She will succeed Dinesh Sharma, who served for two terms before his elevation as Deputy Chief Minister in March after

the Bharatiya Janata Party victory in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Of the 198 Nagar Palika Parishad chairman posts, the BJP won 47 seats, the Bahujan Samaj party (BSP) 18, the Samajwadi Party (SP) 29 and the Congress five. Of the 5,261 Nagar Palika member seats, BJP won 624, BSP 178, SP 328 and the Congress 98. Of the 5,434 Nagar Panchayat member seats, the BJP has won 575 seats, SP 384, BSP 189 and the Congress 106. Of the 1,300 corporation seats across the state, the BJP won 535, the BSP 145, the SP 171 and the Congress 86.

Instant triple talaq illegal; 3-yr jail term for husband: Draft law

Agency | New Delhi Men giving instant triple talaq might land up in jail for three years, according to a draft law aimed to curb the practice which continues despite the Supreme Court striking it down. The proposed law makes instant triple talaq a non-bailable, cognisable offence. The draft

‘Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill’, which was prepared by an inter-minister group headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, was sent to the state governments on Friday for their views, said. Once the views of the states are received, the law ministry would move Cabinet with

the proposal. Under the draft law, triple talaq in any form — spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp — would be bad or illegal and void. The proposed law would only be applicable on instant triple talaq or ‘talaq-e-biddat’ and it would give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking “subsistence allowance” for herself and minor children. It also allows the victims to seek custody of her minor children from the magistrate who will

take a final call on the issue. “The provision of subsistence allowance and custody has been made to ensure that in case the husband asks the wife to leave the house she should have legal protection,” a government functionary told said. The functionary pointed out that after the Supreme Court order, the government was of the view that the practice would end. “But it continues. There have been 177 reported cases of instant talaq before the judgement and 66 after the order this year.

Heavy rains continued to lash coastal areas of Kerala on Friday, crippling normal life, even as Cyclone Ockhi lay centered about 80km north-northeast of Minicoy in Lakshadweep. About 150 fishermen, who put out to sea from various southern districts, were rescued, Thiruvananthapuram District Commissioner K Vasuki said, adding that efforts were on to bring the rest of the stranded fishermen to the shore. “There is no need to panic,” she said. The rescued fishermen included those who were saved by a Japanese cargo

Ahead of the Gujarat elections, Rahul Gandhi and Congress have been on a constant offensive, questioning and criticising the incumbent Gujarat govt. Recently Gandhi alleged PM Modi of giving a grant of Rs 33,000 crore for the Nano plant in Sanand near Ahmedabad. He further added that despite all this, not a single Nano car can be spotted in

the roads of Gujarat. Breaking its silence Tata Motors have eventually replied that they received a loan of Rs 584.8 crore and not a grant. They also mentioned that this loan is from “taxes paid by Tata

Motors”. According to a report in The Indian Express, the company said, “Given the scale of the project and its potential to drive growth in the state, the Government of Gujarat offered Tata Motors

an incentive package in the form of a loan (not a grant), which is to be repaid to the state government as per the loan agreement executed. The loan given to Tata Motors from the government is from taxes paid by Tata Motors. Until now, the state government has given a loan of Rs 584.8 crore to Tata Motors.” Tata Motors also claimed that since the establishment of the Sanand plant, there has been

of an elderly couple who were electrocuted when they came into contact with a snapped live wire in front of their house at Kattakada near Thiruvananthapuram. This baby was one of the twins delivered on Nov 30 morning. The other baby was stillborn. We are shaken and concerned at this

rare incident. We have initiated a detailed enquiry, pending which, the concerned doctor has been asked to proceed on leave immediately. We are in constant touch with the parents and are providing all the needed support.” Max Hospital authorities said. Union Health Minister JP Nadda condemned the incident and asked for necessary action. “Very unfortunate incident, have asked Delhi government to look into it the matter and take necessary action.

Supreme Court dismisses plea seeking SIT probe

Agency | New Delhi The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed another plea filed by a non-government organisation seeking an Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the alleged judicial corruption involving a blacklisted Lucknow medical college. An apex court bench comprising justices R K Agrawal, Arun Mishra and A M Khanwilkar also imposed a cost of Rs 25 lakh on the petitioner NGO – Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR), which had

sought an SIT probe into the matter. The top court had earlier dismissed a similar plea, which made similar allegations filed by advocate Kamini Jaiswal. The petition had claimed that allegations of bribery were levelled for securing settlement of cases relating to medical colleges in which retired Orissa High Court judge, Ishrat Masroor Quddusi, is also an accused. In its FIR, the CBI on September 19 had named several persons including former Orissa High Court judge Ishrat Masroor Quddusi who is an accused in an alleged corruption case.

Gujarat Elections: BJP keen to break Congress record

PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah announced the target of winning 150 seats in Gujarat only after the party did intensive booth-level work for over two years, as per state BJP leaders. The party is keen on breaking the 149-seat record set by Congress under Madhavsinh Solanki in February 1985, when only 11 BJP MLAs were elected. In the last leg of campaign, BJP has strengthened its outreach in 165 constituencies where the party has won at least twice since the 1990s. “Our organisation is very strong in these places and, hence, it will be easier to win these seats,” a BJP leader said. BJP’s campaign has relied on its five main outreach programmes. The Gujarat Gaurav Yatra and Mahasamparak Abhiyan connected the party with voters in most municipal areas and a day before the PM’s rallies, the party held sabhas across the state. Earlier, Shah met over 25,000 ‘karyakartas’ in charge of ‘shaktikendras’ to urge them to work hard to ensure each ‘page pramukh’ (those in charge of printed pages of voter’s list) brings at least 50 voters to the booth. “There are 50,128 booths in Gujarat. Each booth has 800 to 900 voters. A shaktikendra comprises four to five booths,” a BJP leader said. PM’s campaigns in Dhari, Morbi and Jasdan were organised to influence voters in at least 20-25 seats in each area. BJP plans programmes soon to connect with cotton and groundnut farmers, some of whom are upset with the government policies. Gujarat is spread across three regions of the State right from Ambaji in the North, to Godhra in Central Gujarat to Umargaon in the South and comprises four parliamentary constituencies — Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Bardoli and Valsad.Adivasi voters influence other Lok Sabha constituencies, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Panchmahals, Bharuch and Navsari, all of which are presently with the BJP. Why tribal votes could spring a surprise in Gujarat elections: Even though various news channels are reporting widespread resentment against GST and demonetisation in Gujarat, BJP’s top brass remains confident about securing a two-thirds majority in the 182 member state assembly. One of the reasons for BJP being smug about its chances is their focus on Congress’ traditional tribal vote base in the state. Despite a major push by BJP right from the days of Keshubhai Patel and Shankarsinh Vaghela in the late eighties and early nineties, the party wasn’t able to make major inroads into the 15% tribal vote. They could muster only eight while Congress pocketed 15 of the 26 tribal seats in the 1998 assembly election.

Padmavati: Shabana, Kangana, Katrina to campaign with govt for Deepika’s safety?

Agency | New Delhi

There have been movies in the past that have run into controversy but relentless protests against Padmavati have shaken Bollywood to the core. And one of the issues that the film industry is obviously most sensitive to is the death threats issued against Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone. There have been calls to deface Deepika by chopping off her nose to others put-

ting a bounty on their heads. While everyone from the industry has slammed such irresponsible and dangerous remarks, some like Shabana Azmi have decided to go a step further. Bollywood Life quoting DNA After Hours said Shabana and few other actors including Katrina Kaif and Kangana Ranaut will travel to Delhi and submit a written letter to the government seeking support and protection for Deepika.

Hollywood-Bollywood Now That Manushi Chhillar Is Miss World, Take A Moment To Remember Madhu Sapre Agency | New Delhi

Much has been said about Manushi Chhillar’s answer on motherhood and salaries that won her the Miss World title days ago. Perhaps it’s a good time to revisit the response that did not win Madhu Sapre the crown at Miss Universe way back in 1992. Madhu, considered the supermodel of Indian supermodels by many (a Gisele Bundchen of her time, if you will), placed second runner-up at the pageant. It would be the closest India came to winning Miss Universe until Sushmita Sen actually did two years later in 1994. Madhu Sapre, 21 at the time and a former athlete, advanced much further than Suzanne Sablok did in 1990 - she got to the Top 10 - or three former Miss Indias did in the Seventies (to the Top 12). Yasmin Daji had been third runner-up in 1966 and expectations were high from the poised and striking Madhu. In the final question and answer round, she spoke from the heart and said she wanted better sports facilities for her country - despite being sensible and honest, her non-world peace reply helped ensure Madhu Sapre only placed

bottom of the top three. She said later that she had only been following official instructions to speak her mind and that her lack of fluency in English may have been partly to blame for what was considered an unimpressive answer - we have to disagree though, Madhu’s reply was far more title-worthy than any of the stock responses pageant winners routinely peddle. Nobody told Madhu Sapre about diplomacy and saying what folks wanted to hear. Manushi Chhillar, however, learnt her lessons well. Asked “Which profession deserves the highest salary and why,” the 20-year-old medical student said, “I think a mother is of the highest respect. I don’t think it’s just about cash but love and respect she gives to someone. She is the biggest inspiration in my life. Mother should get the highest respect.”

Salman Khan on casting couch: Perhaps It is the most disgusting thing it’s a good

Agency | New Delhi

Tiger Zinda Hai actor, Salman Khan feels taking advantage of someone with a promise to give work is disgusting, and says if he comes across any such person, he takes the person to the “cleaners”. The actor addressed the issue at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in partnership

with CNN-News18 held here on Thursday. Asked about the existence of the casting couch in the Hindi film industry, the actor said: “No one has come and confirmed it. I have been there for the longest time, my father has been here (for) more (time) than me. Till today I have not heard anyone come and say

it straight out. Now, being a beautiful woman or a man, someone or the other is going to flirt with you,” the actor said, adding that it is different from harassment. The 52-yearold superstar said: “If someone is there with a principle that you have to sleep with them to get a job, then it is the most disgusting thing ever. I have not heard anything like this. If a lady or a man comes up to me and tells me that something of the sort has happened with them, I will take them down to the cleaners.”

the integrity of the show. Popular television actor Hina Khan has been vocal about her worries that she would be left alone in the house with her friends leaving oneby-one. This has led people to speculate whether her long survival in the show was part of her contract. Hina, in last night’s episode again spoke about how she would be tortured by Shilpa Shinde’s gang once

all her friends leave the house. Wanting to know whether such clauses are part of the contract, we called up the winner of season three, Vindu Dara Singh, who shared, “I don’t think Hina is wrong in thinking this way! Like anyone of us, she too knows that Priyank Sharma and Luv Tyagi do not have a great chance but that doesn’t mean it was in her contract.

Ex-Bigg Boss contestants Kamya Panjabi and Vindu Dara Singh refute reports of Salman Khan’s show being rigged

Time and again, there has been a buzz about Bigg Boss being rigged or playing around with some favourites. time to revisit the response that did not win Madhu Sapre the crown at Miss Universe way back in 1992 Tera Intezaar movie review: The curious case of hanging mango and Sunny Leone

Agency | New Delhi

It’s another weird supernatural film featuring Sunny Leone. There isn’t anything to talk about its story, still I will enlighten you. Why should critics have all the fun? Veer Singh Rajput (Arbaaz Khan)-- there are producers who still dare to cast him as lead-- is a closet painter. One fine day, while he was painting from his

imagination, it turns out to be Raunaq’s (Sunny Leone) portrait. In next thirty seconds, he meets her and begins to sing duet on a beach. Oh I forgot, Sunny Leone exclaims with uncontrollable enthusiasm after seeing her portrait on Arbaaz’s tablet, “Tumne mujhe bina dekhe itni achchi tasveer kaise bana li (How did you draw such a beautiful pic-

ture without seeing me?). Err, shouldn’t you be worried about such a creepy situation? There are some white collar thieves who want to steal Veer’s paintings even though he is a rookie. Don’t even ask about the paintings, because they may remind you of the first drawing you did in your childhood. Yes, that sun-mountain-river one.

3 / Dt. 02-12-2017, Saturday Correction possible if Gujarat polls outcome disappoints; road sector doing better: Vibhav Kapoor

Agency | New Delhi

The Indian market witnessed a comeback of sorts, reacting to the positive GDP numbers for the second quarter. The Sensex rose over 100 points, while the Nifty managed to trade above 10,250. Midcaps were seen outperforming the benchmarks. Vibhav Kapoor of IL&FS told CNBC-TV18 that while the GDP numbers were good, they were partly expected as well. But the market, in its bull zone, is anyway rising higher. “The market is reflecting expectations of investors that things will improve in terms of macros and resultant increase in earnings,” Kapoor told the channel. In fact, if the growth

does not take place, which have been largely factored in as of now, then there are chances of a further fall or change in sentiment. Speaking on the impact of Gujarat polls, Kapoor said that the Street could take note if there is a big disappointment in the polls. Meanwhile, he is positive on the construction phase among infrastructure companies. “Road sector is starting to do better. Government has brought in reforms, there is emphasis on EPC, hybrid among others,” he told the channel. On financials, he reckons pruning positions in private banks, while things are changing in PSU banks, he said. Risk averse investors could wait for six months.

Hockey World League Final 2017: India aim to shake off inconsistency under Sjoerd Marijne ahead of Australia clash

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Agency | New Delhi

Even before taking the field for their first match against reigning champions Australia, Indian captain Manpreet Singh was flustered. It didn’t take much. An innocuous question from a local reporter tied Manpreet into knots where he was asked about the ‘injector’ (player who pushes the ball for the penalty corner) and why does the ‘injector’ push the ball slowly which results in slowing the pace down and thus the penalty corner is rendered virtually useless. Manpreet took a few seconds to understand and asked the reporter to repeat the question. By then, the ‘injector’ word becomes

a question mark and when a third person entered the fray, redefined the question and made Manpreet understand, the Indian captain laughed and then said, “But I don’t remember when the ‘injector’ had pushed the ball slowly.” It was a classic example of further complicating a highly technical sport. With all its technicalities, skill, speed, a high sense of tactical nous and a chess-like spread

with each coach playing general in order to flank and outflank the other, hockey is still a game where one team needs to score more than the other to win at the end of the day. India coach Sjoerd Marijne hopes that his side brings simplicity to the pitch in their first match and, despite the fact that the opponent standing on the other side of the pitch is Australia, enjoy the moment and ‘play without fear’.

Sourav Ganguly says ‘put his foot down’ for Anil Kumble’s selection for Australia

Australia captain Steve Smith described England’s James Anderson as “one of the biggest sledgers in the game” on Friday as the heat rose off-field at the Adelaide Oval on the eve of the second Test. England have made clear that their dissatisfaction over comments aimed at Jonny Bairstow during their second innings in the 10-wicket defeat in the first test in Brisbane last week that gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Anderson compared the antics of the Australians to bullying in a column in a British newspaper but an amused Smith told reporters that when it came to doling out insults in the middle, the En-

gland paceman was among the worst offenders. “I read the article, and it’s interesting coming from Jimmy, calling us bullies and big sledgers,” Smith told reporters. “I think he’s one of the biggest sledgers in the game, to be perfectly honest with you. “To me in particular, I remember back in 2010

when I first started and wasn’t any good, he was pretty happy to get stuck into me then. Pretty interesting coming from Jimmy.” Anderson took 24 wickets when England retained the Ashes 3-1 in Australia in 2010-11, while Smith managed a high score of 54 not out in three tests over the series.

Virat Kohli, his predecessor MS Dhoni and head coach Ravi Shastri sat across the Committee of Administrators (CoA). The CoA intends to announce the new FTP and compensation package before India’s tour of South Africa in January. And most importantly, it is learnt, the Supreme Court-appointed committee might bypass

the BCCI general body and directly seek approval from the apex court for implementation. “The CoA is mulling on taking the matter directly to the court (for approval). If the BCCI becomes obstructive (to the changes), the matter will directly be taken to the court,” a source informed. The meeting today discussed various issues. With Kohli bemoaning lack of preparation time for the upcoming South Africa tour, the CoA headed by Vinod Rai focused on having more balanced itineraries for the Indian team.

Supreme Court might decide Future Tours Programme, cricketer’s pay hike

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif turned 37 on Friday and the sports fraternity recalled his achievements as they wished him on his big day. Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman were among the cricketers who wished Kaif. But there was one wish which hogged the limelight. It was from former Australia cricketer Matthew Hayden wished Kaif with a witty tweet. “Happy Birthday @MohammadKaif I’m sorry for terrifying you at bat pad for all@ those years???? Have a wonderful year full happiness

and joy!!!,” Hayden wrote on his Twitter handle. In reply, Kaif wrote: “Haha.. Thank you @HaydosTweets . You terrified not just me but bowlers all around the world. So relaxing to see this on the mic version of you :)”. Kaif played 125 ODIs for his country, scoring 2753 runs at an average of 32.01, including 2 centuries and 17 fifties. He made his international debut in 2000 against South Africa in Bengaluru, but didn’t get much chance to feature in the longest format of the game. The agile fielder played just 13 Tests and scored 624 runs at an average of 32.84. He has one century and three fifties to his name.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Thursday admitted that it was he who had compelled the selectors to opt for Anil Kumble during their tour Down Under in 2003-04 despite them planning to drop the leg-spinner ahead of the series. Ganguly, who was in town for a promotional event, said: “I will give you the example of Anil Kumble, who was probably the biggest

match-winner India has ever produced in the last 20-25 years. I remember attending a selection meeting before the tour of Australia in 2003. I was the captain of the side and I knew selectors were not very keen on having Anil in that tour.” Arguably one of the greatest Indian captains, Ganguly had led India to the 2003 World Cup final a couple of months prior to the tour. He was also known to have clear-cut roles

for his teammates and thus put his foot down when it came to picking Kumble for the tour. “As I entered the selection meeting, I could sense the selectors had made up their mind to leave Anil Kumble out. I kept on requesting and insisting that he is such a match winner, he is done so much good for Indian cricket. He must be in Australia and the selectors just didn’t agree,” Ganguly said.

Committee of Administrators (CoA) finalise the revised deals based on new remuneration structure. Pujara, one of the important links in the Indian Test setup, is currently in the Grade A of the contracts alongside India captain Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ravichandran

Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane and Murali Vijay. Shastri, along with Kohli and Dhoni, met CoA chief Vinod Rai on Thursday to discuss the revised compensation package and Future Tours and Programme (FTP) calendar. There have been discussions in BCCI circles that players will be bracketed as per who plays the maximum number of international matches across formats in a particular calendar year. During a panel discussion on journalist Rajdeep Sardesai’s new book ‘Democracy’s XI’, Shastri said.
