With the elections approaching, accusations and counter accusations continued unabated in Rajasthan.

Rahul Gandhi questions PM Narendra Modi’s knowledge of Hinduism New Delhi: Encroaching further into BJP’s Hindutva turf, the Congress president, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not understand the foundation of Hinduism. With the elections approaching, accusations and counter accusations continued unabated in Rajasthan. Mr Gandhi said, “What is the essence of Hinduism? What does the Gita say? That knowledge is with everybody... Knowledge is all around you. Every living being has knowledge. Our prime minister says he is a Hindu,

but he doesn’t understand (the) foundation of Hinduism. What kind of a Hindu is he?” Hitting back BJP national president Amit Shah on Saturday compared the Congress with an automated teller machine (ATM), saying that it was a machine of “lies”. Mr Shah said, “The Congress is an ATM of lies, whereas the BJP is an ATM of development.” Mr Gandhi further accused Mr Modi of shaping the Army’s 2016 surgical strike across the LoC into a “political asset” and being “unsuccessful” in creating job opportunities for

the youth. Referring to the surgical strikes on terror pads across the LoC on September 29, 2016, he told the gathering, “Like during the Modi government, surgical strike was conducted thrice during Manmohan Singh government. Are you aware of it? Modi actually reached into the Army’s domain and shaped surgical strike into a political asset.” The Congress president further alleged that the surgical strike was made public as the BJP was fighting elections in Uttar Pradesh.

“The indigenously designed Brahmos missile is a tested and proven supersonic cruise missile and will form the primary weapon on-board these ships,” said a senior official. New Delhi : The Defence Acquisition Council on Saturday approved military procurement worth Rs 3,000 crore, including Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles for Navy’s two stealth frigates and armoured recovery vehicles for the Army’s Arjun main battle tanks, a senior official said. The DAC also approved the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARVs) for the Indian Army’s main battle tank, Arjun. The ARVs are designed and developed

by the DRDO and would be manufactured by defence public sector undertaking BEML, the official said. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is the ministry’s highest decision-making body on procurement. Recently, India and Russia inked a $500 million contract to build two stealth frigates in Goa. Th ships are expected to be delivered by 2027. Russia’s state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport and India’s Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) signed the contract in New Delhi to build the Grigorovichclass ‘Project 1135.6’ frigates with technology transfer from Russia, which is India’s top arms supplier.

Rahul Gandhi confused about his religion, caste: Sushma Swaraj

Sushma said, ‘God forbid that day when we will have to learn something like that from Rahul Gandhi.’ Jaipur: Union Minister for External Affairs and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader Sushma Swaraj on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, stating that Gandhi and his party are confused about his religion and caste. While addressing media in Jaipur in poll-bound Rajasthan, Swaraj said: “Rahul Gandhi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not know the meaning of being a Hindu. He said that because Rahul and Congress are confused about his own religion and caste. For years, the party

presented him as a secular leader but near polls when they realised that Hindus are in majority, they created his new image.”Further sharpening her attack on the Congress president, she added, “We came to know that he is a ‘Janeudhari Brahmin’ but I did not know that the knowledge of this ‘Janeudhari Brahmin’ has increased so much that we will now have to learn the meaning of Hindu from him. God forbid that day when we will have to learn something like that from Rahul Gandhi.” Addressing a rally in Udaipur earlier on Saturday.

PM Narendra Modi holds trilateral meet with Russia, China President

New Delhi : Hours after attending a trilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Argentina’s Capital Buenos Aires, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held another trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Predictably, the discussions at the two separate meetings were of a very different nature. While the trilateral RIC (Russia, India, China) meeting sought to focus on global economic issues, ensuring regional peace and stability

as well as counter-terrorism efforts, the JAI (Japan, America, India) meeting focused on their strategy in the Indo-Pacific region and a common belief that a “free, open,

inclusive and rules based order is essential for the region’s peace and prosperity”. Experts have seen this Indo-Pacific strategy as a way of dealing with the immense military and economic clout of China in the region. While the US and Japan have been historical allies after the second world war, Russia and China have forged a new partnership with each other to challenge what they see as the dominance of the US globally. India’s ties with both the US and Japan have strengthened enormously under the Modi Government.

Pollution by the numbers

The Great Chinese Famine, which peaked in 1960, was the world’s largest on record. But the effects of that famine—including its toll of more than 30 million deaths—were not quantified until long after the fact. That was partly because government officials were afraid to bring whatever information they had to the attention of Mao Zedong, whose Great Leap Forward policy had played a role in causing the famine. But it was also because so few people actually understood the scale of the problem, owing to a lack of data. Is air pollution today’s great famine? In recent decades, data collection has improved dramatically in many areas. The economy, for example, is tracked and monitored to an unprecedented extent, allowing policymakers and the public alike to recognize very quickly when economic growth is slowing down, job creation is below potential, or demand is flagging. Even if that information does not enable economists to predict future slowdowns with much accuracy, it does facilitate timely responses. This is one reason why there are fewer major economic crises nowadays, and why world GDP (gross domestic product), despite a recent slowdown, is growing much faster than it did a century ago. Yet, when it comes to pollution, and specifically air quality, not nearly enough attention has been paid to data collection and analysis, especially in emerging economies like India and China, where air quality deterioration is obvious and severe. Though broad figures are being collected, there is not enough granular data to provide a clear picture of the specific factors affecting air quality. At the international level, the Asian Development Bank hopes that its Inclusive Green Growth Index (IGGI) will help close this gap. The IGGI aims to assess countries’ performance not only according to economic and social parameters, but also on the basis of their environmental record. More detailed than similar efforts made in the past, the IGGI uses 28 indicators, including clean water access and air pollution levels. The ADB’s data show that, in Asia, the highest performers on environmental sustainability include Singapore, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Laos. At the bottom of the list lie Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia. While factors like natural resources and geography undoubtedly contribute to countries’ performance, such comparisons can be useful to spur purposeful action, with specific data points offering insights into where each country could stand to improve.

Need to prove to my parents that I am worth it, says Sara Ali Khan

New Delhi : Still awaiting her debut film release, Sara Ali Khan has already made the industry sit up and take notice, with her easy wit, intelligence and confidence. Unlike other new actresses, who would be crumbling under pressure before the release of their first film, Sara seems determined to prove a point. “I don’t know what this pressure thing means but there is an urgent need to prove to myself that I am worth it; an urgent need to prove to my parents that I am worth it and then the industry, audience and media. I don’t know where pressure comes in the middle of all this.” “So am I going to be chilling in Goa on the release day? Of course not! I am going to be eagerly waiting to read the reviews. So there is anxiety and enthusiasm, but I don’t think there is pressure. Because pressure kind of connotes that you are being pulled down, which I am not. This week has been the best week of my life.

Zero makers clarify that Shah Rukh holds sword, not kirpan in movie poster

Mumbai: The makers of Zero told the Bombay High Court Friday that lead actor Shah Rukh Khan was holding a sword and not a ‘kirpan’ in the movie’s poster and trailer. A division bench of Justices B P Dharmadhikari and S V Kotwal was hearing a petition filed by advocate Amritpal Singh Khalsa, claiming that the movie’s trailer and poster has hurt sentiments of the Sikh community. The petition, filed earlier this month, sought a direction to the film’s director and producers to delete the

scenes where Shah Rukh is seen wearing a ‘kirpan’ (a sword or small dagger carried by Sikhs). The petition also sought a direction to the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) not to grant certification to the movie

or to revoke it in case it has already been given. Senior counsel Narvoze Serwai, appearing for Shah Rukh Khan, producers Gauri Khan and Karuna Badwal, and director Anand L Rai, told the court Friday that the petition is based entirely on an “erroneous assumption”. “What the lead actor is wearing is not a kirpan. It is an ordinary sword,” Serwai told the court. The court then sought to know if the film has been granted certification from the censor board.

Diljit Dosanjh’s New Song Breaks the Internet

Mumbai : Punjab’s superstar Diljit Dosanjh is back with a new song titled Jind Mahi, released on November 27 which has become an internet sensation. Ever-grateful and humbled for his stardom Diljit says, “I’ve always said and will continue to reiterate that I am a singer and musician first. Acting just happened. I set out to be a musician and am glad to have succeeded .” About his new single, Diljit makes a startling revelation. “It

was actually planned as a song for a film. But that didn’t materialise and am now grateful for that. We decided to restructure it as an independent single. Thankfully, my fans don’t expect me to sing in movies for my songs to become successful.” The music video of Jind Mahi features Diljit with the pretty and petite Banita Sandhu, the girl who played the complicated role of a comatose accident victim in Shoojit Sircar’s October.

With the spotlight on superstar Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, the actress’ role in the film is brief and inconsequential.

Lauren is an important designer for the couple not only because he is a close friend of the actor but also because she and Jonas, 26, both rocked Ralph Lauren Collection at the 2017 Met Gala, which took place one week after their unofficial first date. The couple, who reached the Blue City of Rajasthan on Thursday, are having a dual wedding. The Christian wedding will be followed by a grand Hindu traditional ceremony on Sunday.

Is Rita Ora dating Andrew Garfield?

los angeles : los angeles : There are reports that singer Rita Ora has been ‘secretly dating’ former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield. The pair are said to be in the early stages of their romance, after Rita split with partner Andrew Watt in September. Rita and music producer Andrew were together for 13 months before separating. Two weeks ago, she was spotted attending the Evening Standard Theatre Awards in London along with Oscarnominated actor Andrew. A source close to Rita told The Sun, “Rita let it slip to pals about her brewing romance about a month ago. But in recent days things have started to heat up and she says what they have is the real deal. It is still very early days but they like each other and are seeing what happens. Their schedules make things difficult but they have a real connection.” Andrew previously had a high profile relationship with his Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone.

Nicki Minaj shades Cardi B, again

Amy Jackson sidelined in 2.0 Mumbai : While we speak of pay parity and equal opportunities for women in the film industry, the reality is entirely different. This, Amy Jackson must have realised when her role in Shankar’s 2.0 was abbreviated to being briefer than her costumes, so much so that team members are calling it a ‘gust’ appearance, like a gust of wind. Apparently, Amy was shown no script nor informed what her role would be. “She was only told that she was the

great Rajinikanth’s heroine. She was made to feel she should be grateful for the honour and privilege. Since Amy had already done a number of successful Tamil films, she agreed to do the Robot sequel, thinking her standing in Tamil cinema would see her through. Also, this was a big franchise. And the lead actress in Robot had plenty to do,” says a source. Once on board, Amy realised that the entire script revolved around Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar.

Left high and dry, she attempted to do her best with her limited role. Apparently, her presence is so meagre that the 2.0 producers have asked her to stay out of the marketing and publicity. A crew member of 2.0 smirks, “What did Amy expect with Rajini sir and Akshay around? An author-backed role? She got into it with her eyes open, knowing fully well that the two main actors would hog the limelight. She has no reason to feel cheated.” Not that Amy is about to crib. Marna hai kya?!

los angeles : Nicki Minaj has appeared to reignite her feud with Cardi B, after hiring two bartenders, who are preparing to sue the rapper, to star in her new music video, reports People.com. The girls Baddie Gi and Jade accused Cardi of ordering an attack on them at the strip club where they work Cardi has denied the claims and briefly appear alongside Nicki in the clip for her song Good Form. The casting decision is no doubt set to reheat tensions between Nicki and Cardi. Nicki teased the appearance of Baddie Gi and Jade in her video on Instagram, as she shared a shot of herself posing with the bartenders and other dancers. She tagged the duo in her caption and was seen leaving emojis blowing a kiss and hearts.

India vs Australia: Opener seals his place with century on the final day of warm-up game against CA XI; Rahul makes 62

Murali Vijay closes opener debate Tiger Woods may return to India in 2020 with hundred in practice match

Woods has renewed his relationship with Hero MotoCorp and there is a lot of talk about his coming to India for an entire tournament. Nassau : “I will be back,” said Tiger Woods, triggering speculations of the golf legend’s return to India for a full-fledged tournament sometime in 2020 or 2021. The 14-time Major winner had been to India in 2014, but that trip lasted just 36 hours. Now that Woods has renewed his relationship with Hero MotoCorp, there is a lot of talk about his coming to India for an entire tournament. The visit will happen, depending on the schedule of the legend. During his visit to the national capital four years ago, Woods had played a round

with Hero’s chairman, Pawan Munjal. It had attracted a turnout never seen before at the Delhi Golf Club. Woods was Hero’s Global Corporate Partner, and Hero had become the title sponsor of the USD 3.5 million World Challenge. Munjal, who seems to have struck up a good relationship with Woods, said, “I have been asked when is Tiger coming to India many times in India and elsewhere. All I can say is that he is coming back for sure, but when is the question.” While scheduling it in 2019 may seem tough, but it could happen in the following years.

RBI likely to keep rates unchanged

Mumbai: The RBI is unlikely to change its policy rate in its forthcoming monetary policy meeting next week. According to experts, the macroeconomic factors have slightly improved since the last policy meet with a steep slide in global oil prices and appreciation in the rupee easing concerns about inflation.“The situation has changed materially since then. Firstly, inflation has been softer than expected and will likely undershoot the RBI’s projections and, secondly, crude oil prices have cooled off

30 per cent. This not only improves inflation outlook, but notably eases the stress on the balance of payments and the rupee. In light of this, a hike is unwarranted in our view,” said analysts at Edelweiss Financial Services. The October policy review happened in the background of a severe weakness in the local currency against the dollar and a sharp spike in global oil prices stoking concerns regarding inflation. This drove the RBI to change its policy stance to ‘calibrated tightening’ from ‘Neutral’ even though it left the rates unchanged.

New Delhi :The fury of a pull shot, in essence, is antithetical to Murali Vijay’s refined batting fundamentals. More so when he pulls the spinners, when his body swivels awkwardly and he nearly stumbles on the follow-through. So much so that you wonder how a batsman manifestably incapable of playing an ugly shot, or someone who paint-brushes even slogs with a touch of beauty, can look so banal when pulling the spinners. Maybe, it’s the reason he hardly pulls the spinners these days as opposed to his early cricketing days. They are mostly cut, swept or slogged (that’s a rarity too). Even against seamers on bouncy surfaces, he generally looks to tuck the ball off his hips, unless it’s too short a ball that it beggars to be

flayed, though he’s a mighty fine executioner of that shot. On the final day of the practice game against the Cricket Australia XI, he unleashed a torrent of pulls, specifically against the spinners, in his bid to complete a spot-reassuring hundred. It’s

interesting to see how he started off against Jake Carder, a mediumpacer who began bowling jolly little off-breaks out of sheer whim than anything else. Vijay slightly opened up his stance, the backfoot more across than when he’s facing the seamers.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Nathan Lyon: One art, two masters

New Delhi :After prising out a solitary wicket in 24 overs on a lifeless strip, nonetheless the most economical Indian bowlers on the third day of the practice game, Ravichandran Ashwin tossed up a disclaimer: “We (he and Nathan Lyon) share a lot of mutual admiration but it would be silly to try and replicate his style of bowling.” It’s tempting for an

outsider to follow, and even copy, the habits of a highly successful home spinner. Lyon himself did so in the tour to the subcontinent last year, with glorious returns. But Ashwin wants to steer off such trappings. He reasons it with an analogy. “You’re not going to ask Ishant Sharma to bowl like (Vernon) Philander, can you? It’s not going to happen.”

Gold is trading at 31,460 per 10 grams at the bullion market during the week.

Gold declines on weak global cues, low demand

New Delhi: Amid weak cues from the global market and fall in demand from local jewellers, gold prices plunged Rs 390 to Rs 31,460 per 10 grams at the bullion market during the week. Silver also lost Rs 890 to reach Rs 36,560 per kg due to poor offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said a weak trend in the overseas market weighed on gold prices. Besides, a considerable fall in demand from jewellers and retailers at the domestic spot market put pressure on the prices, they said. Globally, gold ended the week at USD 1,221.88 per ounce and silver at USD 14.17 an ounce in New York. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity started the week with a gain of

Rs 100 each but succumbed to profit-booking and tepid demand to close at Rs 31,460 and Rs 31,310 per 10 grams respectively, showing a fall of Rs 390 each. Sovereign, after remaining steady at Rs 24,800 per piece of 8 grams

on Monday and Tuesday on some support, came under pressure and ended with a fall of Rs 100 at Rs 24,700. Silver ready, barring on Monday and Thursday, traded in the negative zone through the week and ended lower by

Rs 890 to Rs 36,560 per kg while weekly-based delivery dropped by Rs 1,162 to Rs 35,147 per kg. Silver coins, on the other hand, remained unchanged at Rs 73,000 for buying and Rs 74,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Overseas inflows help maintain pressure on the country’s balance of payments and value of the rupee.

Prabhu met several sovereign wealth funds to attract investments New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu has held a series of meetings this week with global sovereign wealth funds including those from Australia, Canada, Singapore, and Korea to attract investments in India, an official said. “In the last two days, the minister separately met global pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and other large funds from Australia, Canada, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Norway and the

European Union and the US. All are looking at India for good investment opportunities,” the government official added. Last month, the minister met the chairman of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world, and sought investments in various sectors including infrastructure. ADIA has shown interest in setting up an India desk, and the ministry is facilitating this initiative. “On December 7, the ministry

is also organising a meeting of global funds in Goa,” the official added. Over 350 delegates are expected to participate in the meeting in Goa. According to the data of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), foreign direct investment in 2017-18 grew by 3 per cent to USD 44.85 billion. Foreign direct investment (FDI) is important as India would require huge investments in the coming years to overhaul

its infrastructure sector to boost growth. Overseas inflows help maintain pressure on the country’s balance of payments and value of the rupee. Gujarat: Fearing poaching by BJP, Congress mum on candidate

Rajkot : Despite being its traditional stronghold, the Congress has not named its candidate to take on BJP minister Kunvarji Bavaliya. The party is most likely to announce its candidate on Monday, the last day of filing of nomination. While officially, the Congress said that it was withholding the name of its candidate as part of a strategy, party insiders said that the delay was due to the apprehension of possible attempts from the BJP to influence Congress candidate. “We have submitted the names of possible candidates to the party high command and a decision on it will be taken in a day or two. It is certain that our candidate will file the nominations on Monday,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi. “Should the BJP, which has borrowed its candidate from us, ask us to declare our candidate? Will the BJP decide who should be our candidate? Congress will give a candidate who will be acceptable to people of Jasdan and who will work for them. But as a part of a strategy, we are holding back his name,” he added. He said that all party MLAs from Saurashtra have been asked to remain present at the office of Returning Officer on Monday.

CM sanctioned proposed ‘Parking Policy’ for Surat

Ahmedabad : Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Vijaybhai Rupani today sanctioned the proposed ‘Parking Policy’ for Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). With a view to resolve the issue of transportation and parking in Surat city, which is second largest densely populated city of Gujarat, caused by vertical rise in human population and number of vehicles,

the SMC had presented the proposed ‘Parking Policy’ and ‘Parking by-laws’ to the state government. On daily basis more than 35,000 commuters are travelling through BRTS in the city. In addition to this, over 7.5 lakh commuters are travelling through auto, taxi, cars and other modes of transport in the city every day. Under the proposed parking policy,

the parking rates on the roadside parking have been fixed as per the National Urban Transport Policy – 2006 (NUTP). These parking rates for the two-wheelers, threewheelers, cars, light and heavy vehicles have been fixed as per their parking durations. The collected parking charges would be utilized for developing parking and transport facilities.

US refuses to be partner country for Vibrant Gujarat summit 2019

Ahmedabad : After partnering the Vibrant Gujarat for two consecutive editions, United States has refused to be a partner country for upcoming edition of summit that is scheduled to be held from January 18-20, 2019. Ten countries including Japan and Canada have already confirmed to be partner countries for the summit. A senior state government official from the Industries and Mines department confirmed that United States had dropped out as “partner country” from the summit which will be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 18. When quizzed about the reason, the official said that US wanted

to restrict itself to events associated directly with the Government of India. This denial from the United States comes despite a high-level

delegation from the Gujarat government headed by Arvind Agarwal, additional chief secretary, finance department travelling to the

United States in October 2017 in connection with the summit. The delegation had held roadshows, visited cities like New York, Chicago and Washington DC to attract investors for the event. Even in the run-up to the Vibrant summit held in 2017, citing elections in the United Sates, officials had expressed disinterest in partnering with the state government for the summit. However, later the Americans joined in. The US began partnering the Vibrant summit in 2015 after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. The same year, US Secretary of State John Kerry had visited Gandhinagar and spoke at the inaugural event.

Back-to-back earthquakes shatter roads and windows in Alaska

Former President George HW Bush dies at age 94 Washington : George HW Bush, a patrician New Englander whose presidency soared with the coalition victory over Iraq in Kuwait, but then plummeted in the throes of a weak economy that led voters to turn him out of office after a single term, has died. He was 94. The World War II hero, who also presided during the collapse of the Soviet Union and the final months of the Cold War, died late Friday night, said family spokesman Jim McGrath. His wife of more than 70 years, Barbara Bush, died in April 2018. The son of a senator and father of a president, Bush was the man with the golden resume who rose through the political ranks: from congressman to UN ambassador, Republican Party

chairman to envoy to China, CIA director to two-term vice president under the hugely popular Ronald Reagan. The 1991 Gulf War stoked his popularity. But Bush would acknowledge that he had trouble articulating “the vision thing,” and he was haunted by his decision to break a stern, solemn vow he made to voters: “Read my lips. No new taxes.” He lost his bid for re-election to Bill Clinton in a campaign in which businessman H. Ross Perot took almost 19 percent of the vote as an independent candidate. Still, he lived to see his son, George W, twice elected to the presidency — only the second father-and-son chief executives, following John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

Anchorage : Back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.0 and 5.7 shattered highways and rocked buildings Friday in Anchorage and the surrounding area, sending people running into the streets and briefly triggering a tsunami warning for islands and coastal areas south of the city. No tsunami arrived and there were no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries. The US Geological Survey said the first and more powerful quake was centered about 7 miles (12 kilometers) north of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, with a population of about 300,000. People ran from their offices or took cover under desks. The 5.7 aftershock arrived within minutes, followed by a series of smaller quakes. “We just hung onto each other. You couldn’t even stand,” said Sheila Bailey, who was working at a high school cafeteria in Palmer when the quake struck. “It sounded and felt like the school was breaking apart.”

French protesters clash with police in Paris; 63 arrested

Paris : Protesters angry about rising taxes clashed with French police for a third straight weekend and dozens were arrested after pockets of demonstrators built barricades in the middle of streets in central Paris, lit fires and threw rocks at officers Saturday. French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner tweeted that “1,500 troublemakers” were around the Champs-Elysees avenue, outside a perimeter secured by police, who said that 63 people were arrested. Protesters, including some wearing black hoodies, piled up large plywood planks and other material in the middle of a street

near the Arc de Triomphe, and set the debris on fire. Police fired tear gas to try to push back the protesters around the monument, and used water cannons near Champs-Elysees avenue. Some demonstrators responded by throwing large rocks. Thousands of police were deployed to try to contain the protests. Castaner also mentioned 200 peaceful protesters, called “yellow jackets” for the fluorescent vests they wear, on the Champs-Elysees. The situation in Paris contrasted Saturday with protests in other French regions, where demonstrations and road blockades were largely peaceful.
