Delhi Police launch new women's safety app that calls PCR at the touch of a button

The Delhi Police rolled out a new mobile phone-based application called Himmat on Thursday, to help ensure the safety of women in the Capital. The app was formally launched by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the presence of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. According to the police, when activated, this app will allow Android smartphone users to call the police control room (PCR) and will also trigger a 30-second audio and video recording at the press of the phone’s power button. Himmat will help users contact police in the quickest possible time in an emergency, a senior police officer said, adding that the PCR will also be able to call back on the victim’s number. The mobile phone user will be asked to feed five emergency contact numbers of friends or relatives into the app’s data base when she first downloads the app.

Massive fire engulfs 17 DTC buses at South Delhi depot

The DTC has appointed a three-member panel to investigate the cause of the fire that gutted17 buses. “We have appointed a three-member fact-finding committee, headed by the deputy chief general manager (mechanical) who has been asked to submit a report within three days,” DTC Chairman-cumManaging Director Debashree Mukherjee said. Delhi Fire Service Chief A.K. Sharma has not ruled out possibility of either a sabotage or a bonfire, which could have caused the massive blaze at the depot. “Somebody might have lit a bonfire nearby to keep himself warm during the winter night and left it unattended.

All four people on board the vessel from near the Pakistani port city of Karachi are believed to have been killed in the dramatic episode, according to the defence ministry. The suspicious behaviour of the boat's crew brought back memories of the 26/ 11 terror attacks in Mumbai six years ago. Then, 10 gunmen had travelled from Karachi in a boat, hijacked an Indian fishing vessel and steered it to Mumbai to go on a three-day rampage during which they killed 166 people. A defence ministry official said the trawler stopped only after the ICG fired shots, but the crew had by then set it on fire, triggering a major explosion that sank the vessel. Neither the boat nor its crew could be "recovered" due to rough weather. The ICG ruled out the explosion being an accident, saying the men on the boat sped away because they were hiding "something really serious". "If they weren't doing anything wrong, then they had no reason to run, to set the boat on fire. Why would anyone set (themselves) on fire?" said KR Nautiyal, deputy inspector general of the ICG. A top government source

told HT it all began around 9am on December 31, after the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) issued an intelligence alert to the ICG that a suspicious Pakistani fishing boat from Keti Bunder near Karachi was headed towards India. The conversations between the crew and their handlers in Pakistan were intercepted and intelligence authorities suspected that a terror strike was being planned With the NTRO providing the exact coordinates of the trawler, the ICG scrambled a Dornier plane at 11am to locate it. The Dornier captain was categorically asked not to fly too low as it would have alerted the crew. The plane spotted the boat at the exact location given by the NTRO. It undertook a second sortie at 2pm and found that the rogue boat was still sailing towards India. The aircraft was launched for the third time at 5.30pm. It found no change in the boat's course. By now, the ICG was pretty clear that the Pakistani vessel was up to some serious mischief --perhaps a 26/11-type terror strike or a suicide attack on an Indian warship. It immediately ordered two warships patrolling

the area to intercept the boat and interrogate the crew. ICG's in-shore patrol vessel Rajratan made contact with the boat around 11pm. The warship warned the unlit vessel to stop for investigation but it swiftly changed course and attempted to speed away, taking advantage of the "darkness, bad weather and strong winds". This led to a hot pursuit that lasted for more than an hour before the four-man

crew hid below the deck and exploded the boat. "The consequences would

Spot the difference: Modi's NITI Aayog looks quite like the Planning Commission The government has set up NITI Aayog, a think-tank that will replace the Planning Commission. According to a government press release, the new body is the result of "extensive consultations" the Centre held with state governments, domain experts and other relevant institutions. The move is the first major step taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in order to break away from the Socialist legacies in the matters related to economy and development. The Planning Commission, established by Jawaharlal Nehru 65 years ago to formulate Five-Year Plans,

has been criticised for being a Socialist era vestige, which became irrelevant in a more globalised and marketfocussed economy. NITI Aayog has been set up "to provide a critical directional and strategic input into the development process". It will act as a

Haryana CM Khattar orders fresh probe into Vadra land deal Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has ordered a fresh probe into the allotment of 350.17 acres of prime land in Gurgaon to realty firm DLF. The allotment was quashed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in September last year. CM Khattar said: “The first priority of the state government was to ensure good governance, transparency and provide people a graft-free system. Initiatives such as Good Governance Day, CM Window, CM portal and transparent registration have been taken in this direction, and it has increased people’s faith in the government.” Sources close to the government said the probe has been ordered on the basis of a letter written by senior IAS officer Ashok

Khemka. It is worth mentioning that Khemka had also cancelled the mutation of the land purchased by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s sonin-law Robert Vadra. Khemka in his letter has nailed the DLF and Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) which had appealed against the high court decision. Terming it a politicobureaucratic nexus, Khemka has said the separate appeals filed to get the allotment restored were part of the predetermined strategy. The senior IAS officer also said the HSIIDC officials had connived with the DLF bosses to shower the prime land at throwaway prices, neglecting other bidders on a single bid basis.

Khemka has also accused the HSIIDC officials of providing interest waiver to the DLF, which was also offered additional piece of land measuring 54.6 acre without making changes in the reserve price.

CBI’s credibility impugned Bipasha Basu welcomes 2015 The discharge by a Mumbai special court of Bharatiya Janata Party president and former Gujarat Minister Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case is a boost for the BJP and a setback to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which seems unable to live down its reputation as an agency that is ever eager to please its political bosses. With the judge of the Special CBI Court, M.B. Gosavi, ruling that there was substance in the defence argument that the case was foisted on Mr. Shah for political reasons, the CBI will have a tough time recovering its credibility as the country’s premier criminal investigation agency. That the judge decided to discharge Mr. Shah from the case, and saw no need for him to go on trial, says a lot about the nature of the evidence put together by the CBI. Not only was the agency’s mode of investigation faulted, but political motives were attributed to its actions. However, if the CBI framed Mr. Shah in the case for political reasons to please the previous Congress-led government at the Centre, then could it have made out a “weak case” against Mr. Shah to please the present BJP-led government? After all, Mr. Shah is seen as the second most powerful person in the country, and as a close friend of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This indeed is the question raised by Rubabuddin Sheikh, brother of Sohrabuddin. Given the track record of the CBI in recent times, this is not a question to be dismissed casually. If political pressures did indeed force the CBI to frame Mr. Shah, then, quite plausibly, similar pressures could now have been at work to facilitate his discharge in the case. At the end of a civil rights movement against corruption in high places, the Lokpal Act, 2013 was introduced with provisions to insulate the CBI from political interference. But in high-profile, politically sensitive cases such as the one involving Mr. Shah, the investigation can still be tailored to suit the requirements of the rich and the powerful if the higher courts do not take to strict and constant monitoring. Sohrabuddin’s relatives have decided to appeal against Mr. Shah’s discharge, and some of the evidence will again come under scrutiny. At this stage, if anything at all is certain, it is that the CBI’s handling of this case against Mr. Shah does not inspire confidence in the public mind.

Exercise could help improve quality of life of Parkinson’s patients

According to a new study published in Neurology – the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology – exercise could help improve balance of those suffering from Parkinson’s and this could enable them to move around and improve their overall quality of life. In the study, 231 people with Parkinson’s disease either received their usual care or took part in an exercise programme of 40 to 60 minutes of balance and leg strengthening exercises three times a week for six months. This minimally-supervised exercise programme was prescribed and monitored by a physical therapist with participants performing most of the exercise at home. On

average, 13 per cent of the exercise sessions were supervised by a physical therapist. Falling is a common problem for people with Parkinson’s, with 60 per cent falling each year and two-thirds of those falling repeatedly. “The resulting injuries, pain, limitations of activity and fear of falling again can really affect people’s health and well-being,” said study author Colleen G Canning, of the University of Sydney in Australia. Compared to those in the control group, the number of falls by participants who exercised was reduced in those with less severe Parkinson’s disease, but not in those with more severe disease.

Amit Shah to launch BJP”s SPORTS ROUND drive against drugs in Punjab Hussey not ready to coach India Ludhiana BJP President Amit Shah will launch his party’s campaign against drugs in Punjab on January 22. Stating this BJP’s national Secretary Tarun Chugh said here today that the campaign would be launched from Amritsar under the aegis of the party’s youth wing. Saffron party’s youth leader and MP Anurag Thakur and Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma would be supervising the campaign, he said. “The party’s drive would cover the state in three phases, with its culmination to take place on the occasion of Baisakhi on April 14,” Chugh said. He said that party workers would move from village to village in the state to create awareness about drug menace and educate people on the colossal harm that the drugs are doing to the state. The BJP leader lashed out at the opposition Congress “for shedding only crocodile tears over the drug issue”. To a question, he refuted that differences had cropped up between BJP and its ally Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab on various issues including the drug issue. He, however, said that BJP, a coalition partner in the Parkash Singh Badal led state government “certainly wants the ouster

of Revenue Minister Bikram Sigh Majithia…as he had been summoned by Enforcement Directorate in the Rs 6,000 crore drug racket case”. Regarding SAD’s proposed dharnas on January 5 against drug menace, he said BJP was of the view that SAD should not have announced to hold any demonstration against the BSF. This would have amounted to an attempt to demoralise the forces deployed on the border, Chug said. Earlier, the ruling SAD had diluted its stand on its proposed sit-ins on drug smuggling. The BJP ally

had on Sunday announced that it will organise ‘dharnas’ on the international border on January 5 to “pressurise

the BSF” to stop entry of drugs from “Pakistan”. However, a day later, the SAD said it will hold three dharnas near the IB check

points to “create awareness” about drugs as well as focus on the need for greater vigilance along the border with Pakistan.

Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey says he is mystified by a report in India that claimed Mahendra Singh Dhoni has floated the idea of him becoming India's coach once Duncan Fletcher's contract expires. "I'm not sure if I'm really ready for that sort of challenge," Hussey was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald Thursday night. "Thanks, M.S., if it's true...but, I'm still playing!" Dhoni, who retired from Test cricket after last Tuesday's draw with Australia, was reportedly concerned about the direction the dressing

room's culture was headed. "In a carefully calibrated way, Dhoni's intent and communication about Hussey has reached the top BCCI boss, and nobody else is privy to this," the report claimed. The article said Hussey was seen by Dhoni as: A "brilliant thinker and man manager"; he'd bring Gary

Kirsten-like "calmness and camaraderie" on board; Hussey was seen as the "brain" behind Murali Vijay's success in Australia because he'd worked with him; his "work ethic" was legendary. Hussey, veteran of 79 Tests, said his immediate priority was to help the Sydney Thunder fulfil its vast potential. Zimbabwe-born Fletcher took over from Gary Kirsten after India won the 2011 World Cup. Despite enjoying success with England, however, Fletcher was yet to lift the Indian team to greater heights when they toured. His contract expires after this year's World Cup.

NC urges India and Pakistan to start dialogue to help suffering border villages

NEW DELHI The ban on four of the 32 websites enforced by the Indian government recently in an effort to curb ISIS propaganda in the country has been lifted. The ministry of communications and information technology issued a statement saying it has initiated action to unblock vimeo.com, dailymotion.com, gist.github.com and weebly.com. The sites can now be accessed freely. The statement also said that a "similar approach (of unblocking websites) could be considered for other involved websites on getting assurance that law of the land would be complied with." Until that happens, the remaining 28 websites will remain blocked in the country. The anti-terrorism squad had called for a ban on these websites as these were being used to spread jihadi propaganda. For the second time this week, smugglers abandon migrant-packed ship in treacherous seas off Italian coast ROME An Icelandic Coast Guard ship was towing a cargo vessel to Italy Friday with about 450 migrants who were abandoned by smugglers, leaving the vessel in rough seas without a crew, authorities said Friday. Italian Coast Guard Cmdr. Filippo Marini said that

after several hours of struggling, Italian rescue teams shortly before dawn managed to secure the wave-tossed Ezadeen for towing toward the southern Calabrian region. The Icelandic ship Tyr, part of a European new European patrol force to detect and aid migrants at sea, was doing the towing.

Children and pregnant women were among the migrants, most of who were believed to be Syrian,

said Marini. The SierraLeone-flagged cargo ship apparently set sail from Turkey, he said.

The first day of the New Year started with a bang for residents of Kolhapur, when an adult leopard came calling on them. However, the big cat died soon after a botched-up operation to catch it. Officials’ lack of equipment, expertise and planning marred the more than five-hour-long exercise to bring the wild cat under control. The attempt to nab the animal turned to be so slipshod that it died soon after being taken captive. Morning walkers first spotted the cat at the elite Ruikar Colony in Kolhapur at 5.30am. After the police were informed, they alerted forest officials. But by then, a stick-wielding mob was thronging the area to lynch the creature. In the chaos of people craning their necks to see

the cat and the police struggling to keep control, the agitated leopard injured one Ravi Mane, while two others fell off their bikes and were hurt. A Kolhapur police officer said: “Forest officials decided to capture it without rendering it unconscious as they lacked rifle and anaesthetic darts that could only be procured from Sangli, a distance of about two hours by road.” However, the police officer could not explain why the area was not

cordoned off. According to wildlife photographer and enthusiast Kedar Bhat, nabbing the leopard from an open area without using a cage trap is not only difficult but also dangerous. Officials used large nets to trap the animal, which had taken shelter under an outdoor seating arrangement near local MP Dhananjay Mahadik’s bungalow. However, once nabbed, people failed to stop it from violently tossing and turning.

Exports to Russia may start after Sushma hands over Pravasi Bharatiya Divas logo to Gujarat CM regulatory approvals: Amul Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), makers of Amul brand dairy products, today said exports to Russia may start two to three months after the necessary regulatory approvals are in place. Revenues during the current financial year may cross Rs 22,000 crore against over Rs 18,000 crore in FY14 and the company would invest Rs 4,000-5000 crore in the next three years on capacity expansion, GCMMF Managing Director R S Sodhi said today. “The inspection team from Russia has already visited our plants and expressed satisfaction. They approved our plants also.

There are some regulatory issues which are to be sorted out,” Sodhi told reporters in a press conference. Recently, GCMMF had said it is in discussion with Galactika Group to export dairy products to Russia and once sealed, Amul would become the first Indian dairy products maker to enter into that market. “Russia is going to be a

very good market for Indian dairy products exporters. We can start exports to Russia after the approvals come. I think it may take two months,” he said. He said Russia presents huge potential for Indian exports as 30 per cent of that country’s requirements (dairy products) are imported. According to him, Russia imports about 8-10 lakh

tonnes of milk powder and 20 lakh tonnes of cheese per annum. “Amul’s exports stood at Rs 540 crore last year. At present, the international prices of milk commodities are very low. We right now focussed more on Indian market. “In India, milk and milk products are growing in double digit. Amul is growing at over 24 per cent per annum,” he said.

No bail for music teacher accused of molesting student Ahmedabad A special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act ) court on Thursday denied anticipatory bail to the music teacher who is accused of molesting his eight-year old student in a Satellite school. Additional sessions judge G N Rana in Mirzapur rural court campus refused bail to music teacher Sachin Dangi, who allegedly pinched a student's cheeks

and thighs and demanded that she undress before him. The girl complained about this on December 16 after coming home from school. After Dangi applied for protection against arrest, the girl's mother took an objection and her lawyer Mehul Srivastav submitted that there was no point in disbelieving the student, neither should her character be doubted at such a tender age. To counter the accused teacher's contention that an

arrest might spoil his career, the cops filed an affidavit and apprised the court that Dangi had faced similar accusations before when he was working with another school, advocate Srivastav said. Dangi argued that the CCVT footage did not reflect any such incident and hence he be granted bail. To this the prosecutor submitted that the CCTV cameras were not placed inside classrooms. Meanwhile, the school has suspended the music teacher.

Kiran Vadodaria is ‘Mini Gujarat’ straddles 129 out of world’s 190 countries new INS president AHMEDABAD 'Jyaan jyaan vase ek Gujarati, tyaan, tyaan sadakaal Gujarat'. This verse written in the first half of the 20th century by poet Ardeshar Khabardar has proved prophetic. Today, people of Gujarati origin can be found in as many as 129 out of the 190 countries listed as sovereign nations by the United Nations. The Vishwa Gujarati Samaj (VGS) claims this is indicated by the data it has collected over the last two decades. Incidentally, the central government puts the number of countries where

Indians have settled at just 110. Talking about the Gujarati diaspora, VGS president Krishnakant Vakharia told TOI, "The only countries where Gujaratis have not settled are those which are very small, undeveloped or are merely small islands without much business opportunity." Gujaratis comprise around 33% of the Indian diaspora worldwide. The US has the largest number of Gujaratis — 15 lakh. The UK has the next largest (seven lakh) followed by Canada, Australia, South Africa and

New Zealand. Interestingly, Gujarati families live even in Nauru, a nation of a little over 9,000 people located in the Pacific Ocean. This is the second smallest sovereign state in the world after the Vatican. People of Gujarati origin have not only inhabited Nasa's space station but they can be found even near the Arctic Circle. Yellowknife town in north Canada near the Arctic has a number of Gujaratis working for its diamond mines. Further, some sit in British House of Lords while the US President's team has several members of Gujarati origin.
