Congress, Trinamool Compromising India’s Sovereignty, Says Arun Jaitley On Assam NRC Row

New Delhi: Hitting out at the Congress and Trinamool Congress for compromising the sovereignty of India on the issue pf Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), Union minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday (1 August) said political leaders must realise that “sovereignty and citizenship are the soul of India” and not “imported vote banks”, reported news agency ANI. He wrote in a Facebook post that India’s sovereignty is paying a heavy price because of the quality of its political discourse. “Though Mrs Indira Gandhi and Mr Rajiv Gandhi took a particular position in 1972 and 1985 for the deletion and deportation of foreigners, Rahul Gandhi takes a contrarian position and his party turns turtle,” the Union minister was quoted as saying in the report.

No foreign leaders to be invited: Imran Khan opts against ‘fancy’ swearing-in

Islamabad: Imran Khan has decided against inviting foreign leaders and celebrities to his oath-taking ceremony as Pakistan’s new prime minister as he wants to keep the event very simple, according to a media report. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the single largest party in the elections held on July 25. The 65-year-old leader is expected to take oath on August 11.His party had initially planned to invite several foreign leaders and personalities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bollywood superstar Amir Khan and Indian cricketers like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Navjot Singh Sidhu to the event. However, in an apparent change of heart on Thursday, Khan has opted against a fancy ceremony, Dawn newspaper reported. “The PTI chairman has directed to stage the oath-taking event with austerity,” Dawn newspaper quoted PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry as saying. “He will take his oath in a simple ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr (President House),” the spokesperson said. “It has been decided that no foreign personalities will be invited to the ceremony — it will be a completely national event. Only a few close friends of Imran Khan will be invited.” “There will be no show of extravagance at the event,” Chaudhry said.

New Delhi : As many as 17 opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress, are planning to approach the Election Commission demanding that ballot papers be used to conduct next year’s 2019 Lok Sabha election. “This is a matter on which all opposition parties agreed. We are planning to meet next week. We plan to go to Election Commission and demand that the EC conduct the coming Lok Sabha elections using ballot papers,” TMC leader Derek O’Brien told reporters. TMC chief Mamata

Banerjee, who visited Parliament on Wednesday to meet opposition leaders and invite them for her planned mega rally in Kolkata on January 19, took the initiative to gather the support of all opposition parties on the matter. Banerjee was heard appealing to opposition party leaders who visited her in the TMC office in Parliament, to send a joint delegation to the Election Commission over reports of EVM tampering and to demand that the 2019 general election be held on ballots. “All opposition parties should go to EC on this matter.

migrants from Bangladesh, Jaitley said that as a federal front leader, Banerjee was

also taking a contrary view. “Can India’s sovereignty be decided by such fickle minds and fragile hands?” He also debunked the argument that dropping four million people from the NRC was a human rights issue. “A refugee on account of persecution may have a humanitarian consideration. Illegal migration does not have it. There is not fundamental right to any person to do so,” he said. The opposition Congress and Trinamool Congress have disrupted Rajya Sabha proceeding for the last three days over the draft NRC published in Guwahati on Monday that left out four million residents of Assam. The NRC exercise is aimed at identification and deportation of illegal immigrants.

Ravi Shankar Prasad cites ‘loose alliance’ between Congress, Mehul Choksi

New Delhi: Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday alleged that the Congress party had a ‘loose alliance’ with absconding diamond merchant Mehul Choksi. Prasad told news agency ANI that he came to know about the connection between the embattled businessman and the grand old party after a news channel broadcasted an interview of one of the international lawyers of Choksi namely, David Dorset. Quoting the lawyer, the Union Minister said, “Mehul Choksi was an ordinary businessman who had some loose alliance with what is now the opposition party in India, the Congress.” The Union Minister further claimed that the gross income of Choksi’s company rapidly increased during the Congress regime. “Mehul Choksi’s revenue suddenly increased at a time the Congress party was

in power,” he said. Meanwhile, Prasad also said that the Central government in collaboration with the international authorities are carrying out a thorough investigation in the connection. Reportedly, the Indian High Commission in Antigua and Barbuda had asked the authorities there to stop billionaire diamond trader Mehul Choksi from travelling around the world. A Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act

(PMLA) court in Mumbai on July 26 issued summons against both absconding businessmen Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. The PNB detected the multi-crore scam earlier this year wherein Nirav and Choksi had allegedly cheated the bank to the tune of USD 2 billion, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.

Six TMC parliamentarians and two party legislators have been detained. They went there

If some people demand a separate north Karnataka, I want to tell them it will not happen, not during my lifetime and not during my son’s lifetime,” he told news agency PTI in an interview. Why the liberal arts are crucial

One of the things I value most in life are the friends I have and the lessons they teach. Their insights are not lectures but emerge from the way they live and think. The other day I met a friend, a philosopher, and I was telling him excitedly about the new liberal arts universities being planned across India. I cite in particular a speech by a distinguished banker. He talked about how he had examined various courses, studied what was missing in them. “The deficit,” he claimed, “was the liberal arts, a sense of aesthetics and values which added a holism to managerial and corporate life.” My friend laughed and said: “You make the liberal arts sound like an extract, an educational potion to be instantly marketed. Corporations cannot redeem the liberal arts. Look at the way they have turned CSR into an oxymoron for ethics.” I was angry, and then he laughed and said: “A walk through the city is a better course in liberal arts than any college effort.” He explained: “You do not begin with a syllabus, which is like a shopping list, buying two parts Panini and three parts Socrates.” Liberal arts do not begin with diktats and syllabi, but with storytelling. The return of storytelling is the first attempt to redeem education. Storytelling creates memory, returns orality to its place in society. He added that we need the classics and storytellers. Orality has to spring back to life. Our villagers can tell you a Mahabharat with myriad variants. A return to orality is what you need, not a course in the digital humanities, which tells how many times Shakespeare used the word “evil”. Orality links up to memory. Our street performances emphasise memory and the constant reinvention of memory. Memory is reinvention. When you can recite, you reinvent. Memory can give you as many variants of a legend or folklore as the uses of a coconut. Memory captures diversity. He asked me which liberal arts course has a sense of diversity, a profusion of languages. He quoted his friend, the wonderful Kannada writer U.R. Ananthamurthy, saying: “An illiterate in India speaks five languages, while a convent school girl survives on one.” The liberal arts are a celebration of language, of the playfulness of translation. It’s an act of mourning for language loss, a wake for all the languages we have lost. Once memory is central, recovering languages, and celebrating their world views, is the task of liberal arts. A city is a diversity of languages — “which liberal arts course can quote such a diversity, pretend to be a costume ball of languages?” A living city is a better model for the liberal arts than some stiffnecked course on the classics.

In fact it was a touching moment for the superstar as he referred to Kapoor as his Fanney Khan, someone who always made him feel welcome and encouraged him through the course of his career. Said Shah Rukh Khan, “Anil sir ne mujhse itni pyaar

se baatchit ki. He was my Fanney Khan… a talented, hardworking actor who was always so kind. He

After cancer jolt and four rounds of chemo, clarity has come as a lightning: Irrfan

Mumbai: Actor Irrfan Khan is a Bollywood star and Hollywood chameleon, who has bounced between the two with ease for decades, working with everyone from Mira Nair to Wes Anderson and Ang Lee and stealing scenes in both Oscarwinners (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and blockbusters (“Jurassic World”) alike. But all that’s been put on hold as he undergoes treatment in London for a neuroendocrine tumor, a rare form of cancer. Although Khan’s life now is very different from only a few months ago, he still has films that he worked on as recently last year coming out, including “Puzzle,” a poignant character drama expanding to 11 cities this weekend. The indie film from Oscar-nominated producer Marc Turtletaub (“Little Miss Sunshine”) is about a stifled suburban housewife, played by Kelly Macdonald, who forms a bond with a more cosmopolitan man, (Khan), over a shared fondness for puzzles. It’s one that the 51-yearold actor is immensely proud of, and eager to talk about, but, he also knows very keenly how unpredictable his life has become.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

India vs England: Jos Buttler rushed to hospital after middle-finger injury

Asian Games 2018 bound steeplechase runner Naveen Dagar fails dope test

New Delhi: Olympic medallists Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu sailed into the women’s singles quarterfinals with straight-game wins but it was curtains for Kidambi Srikanth at the BWF Badminton World Championships in China on Thursday. Saina, who had clinched a silver and a bronze at the 2015 and 2017 editions, downed 2013 champion Ratchanok Inthanon of Thailand 21-16 21-19 to set up a meeting with Olympic champion and two-time world champion, Carolina Marin of Spain. Later in the day, last edition’s silver medallist Sindhu, seeded third, eased past ninth seed Ji Hyun Sung of Korea 21-10 21-18 in another third round clash. Sindhu will next play eight seed Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, a rival against whom she lost in the summit

clash of the tournament last year. “I am really happy with the performance. It was a good match overall even though I won the first set quite easy. But the second game was not easy. There were lot of rallies so I had to be consistent and be very patient,” Sindhu said after the win. Asked about her clash against Okuhara tomorrow, she added: “We have been playing against each other for a while and tomorrow will be yet another one and a very important one. “I can tell you one thing that it will be a long match so I need to be prepared and will give my 100 per cent.” B Sai Praneeth also eased into the men’s singles quarterfinals with a comfortable 21-13 21-11 win over Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus.

Mumbai : The Indian athletics contingent’s preparation for the upcoming Asian Games was dealt a severe blow after steeplechase runner Naveen Dagar tested positive for banned substance meldonium during the Inter-State Athletics Meet in Guwahati. Dagar is a bronze-medallist from the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and breached the qualifying mark of 8:41 seconds during the Guwahati meet. It is learnt that Dagar was handed provisional suspension by the

Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on July 23 after he tested positive for the banned substance during an In-Competition (IC) test by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). “AFI has suspended Dagar, who was undergoing high altitude training with other middle and long distance runners in Bhutan. He has tested positive for meldonium. He is now awaiting his B sample report,” a source close to the athlete told PTI on Thursday.

Mumbai : England suffered an injury scare on the second day of the first Test at Edgbaston after vice-captain Jos Buttler was rushed to the hospital for an X-Ray on his left middle finger. While reports suggest that this has been done as a precautionary measure. Buttler hurt his finger when he attempted to take a catch Virat Kohli at gully off James Anderson. However, Buttler failed to latch on to the chance as the ball hit his fingertips and went past. Shortly afterward Buttler signaled for a substitute fielder to come on. As per latest reports Buttler has been cleared of a fracture but isn’t expected to field on Friday. Buttler will regret letting Kohli off the hook as the Indian captain went on to score a terrific hundred. With a slice to the right of

backward point, Kohli reached his 22nd international century. Batting with the tailenders the Indian captain kept the scoreboard ticking and took the Indian team to 274, 13 runs short of England’s 287. However, at the end of day’s play, England were 9/1 with a lead of 22 runs and nine wickets in hand. Earlier, in an interview with The Telegraph, Buttler gave an insight on his methods of fielding drills before a Test match and said, “We stand around in the field for long periods of time but all the activities we do are power-based. When wicket keeping I might need to be able to dive as far as I can to my right to take a catch, so a lot of my training is based around building power in my legs and hips, as well as hand speed and strength.

India vs Ireland, Women’s Hockey World Cup: India looks to reach last-four after 44 years New Delhi: The last time an Indian hockey team — men’s or women’s — reached the final four of a World Cup was a few months before the Emergency. Sholay had not yet hit the theatres and Gerald Ford occupied the White House. That’s how long it has been since Indian hockey was among the elite in the world. The men’s team was on the podium in the first three editions, but since India were world champions at Kuala Lumpur in 1975, they have not hit those heights again. On Thursday, the Indian women’s team has an opportunity to boldly go where no Indian side has gone for a very long time. They themselves were in that rarefied air at the inaugural World Cup in 1974. All they

need to do is beat Ireland, the 16th-ranked team in the world, an eminently achievable task, even though they pipped the Indians by a solitary goal when they met in a group match last week at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. Regardless of the result on Thursday, the Indian women’s hockey team has come a long way in the last few years, despite the powers-that-be often treating it as almost an afterthought. The relative lack of spotlight, compared to the men’s outfit, and the manner in which coaches are moved around only serve to strengthen that impression. The team didn’t even make it to the last World Cup four years ago after ending ninth in 2010, and when it

made it to the Olympics in 2016, after a hiatus of 36 years, they finished 12th among as many teams, losing four of their five matches and drawing the other one. Coach Sjoerd Marijne knows life from both sides of the fence, having been at the helm of the men’s team for a while, and understands how big a deal this run at the World Cup is for the girls. “This is such a good moment for women in India to show that they can achieve something. We don’t get to play many matches in India. So, this win is a big one for India,” the Dutchman said. The turnaround from two years ago is remarkable in itself. The team, coached by Australian Neil Hawgood, scored three goals while conceding 19 in Rio.

Shanghai: Starbucks on Thursday announced a partnership with e-commerce giant Alibaba that will give the US coffee giant greater access to China’s growing fooddelivery market as it faces increased competition from local firms. The move comes as Seattle-based Starbucks faces a challenge from upstart Chinese company Luckin Coffee, which has expanded aggressively on a strategy based largely on satisfying delivery orders placed by mobile app users. “We truly believe that this enduring partnership will elevate the coffee culture in China,” Starbucks president and CEO Kevin Johnson said at news

conference in Shanghai. Johnson called the tie-up “rocket fuel” for the US company’s emerging digital strategy. BlackBerry eyes 10-12 per cent share in Indian smartphone market

BOOM was mandated to review English language news stories flagged on Facebook, check facts, and rate their accuracy. New Delhi: Social networking giant Facebook on Thursday said it has expanded its partnership with BOOM Live to provide factchecking capabilities in Hindi and Bengali as well as fact-check photos and videos. In April, the US-based company had introduced a thirdparty fact-checking programme in India with BOOM Live to combat the spread of “false news” on its platform with a pilot in Karnataka ahead of elections in the state. “Following fact-checking in English during the Karnataka pilot stage, BOOM Live will now also provide fact-checking capabilities in Hindi and Bengali, and will also factcheck photos and videos, in addition to article links,” Facebook said in a statement. BOOM was mandated to review English language news

stories flagged on Facebook, check facts, and rate their accuracy, it said. Facebook is running similar initiatives in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, Indonesia, the Philippines and the US. In the recent past, Facebook has drawn intense criticism from users and governments globally over a number of issues, ranging from false news on the platform to information of over 80 million users being mined by data analytics and political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica. Facebook has committed to continue strengthening its work and partnerships around news literacy in India and extend it across local languages, partner newsrooms, journalists and fact checkers to build a more informed community, the statement issued today said.

New Delhi: Optiemus Infracom, which makes BlackBerry phones for the Indian market, expects the brand to capture 10-12 per cent market share of the Rs 25,000-45,000 smartphone segment by the end of this year. Optiemus is lining up new devices across various price points for Blackberry as the brand looks to regain lost ground against rivals like Samsung, Xiaomi and others. Currently, the market share of Blackberry is negligible.“We have already introduced three devices in the last two months and the pipeline for new products is robust. We expect to capture 1012 per cent share of the Rs 25,000-45,000 segment,” Optiemus Infracom Executive Director Hardip Singh told PTI. BSElisted Optiemus Infracom has a manufacturing and

distribution tie-up with BlackBerry for India and neighbouring markets. BlackBerry had a similar partnership with TCL for other markets. “The relevance of a Blackberry is much, much more today than it was 10 years back because today you are doing more than just communicating, especially the youngsters, they use phones for social networking, banking, personal data, photographs,” he explained. Singh emphasised that the need to keep all this data private and secure is much more now. He said the company has conceptualised, designed and manufactured its latest Explore and Explore X devices in India, keeping in mind the young audiences and the features they seek.

New Delhi: State-owned CIL on Thursday said it produced 177.43 million tonnes of coal in the first four months of the ongoing fiscal, registering a growth of 14 per cent. The state-owned firm accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal production.CIL has pegged its production estimate at 630 MT in 2018-19. In a separate statement, the PSU said it registered double digit growth of 15.1 per cent in coal supplies to thermal power plants (TPPs) during the April-July period, compared to a year ago. Coal supplies by CIL to TPPs perked up to 161.71 MT during the April-July period of the current fiscal, compared to 140.50 same period last financial year, it said. The increased supply was a result of higher rake loading to power sector which witnessed a growth of 12.5 per cent during the referred period.

Witness tells court he never gave SIM card to accused cop, declared hostile

Ahmedabad : In the alleged fake encounter case of Tulsiram Prajapati, a prosecution witness, who had claimed to have given a SIM card to the accused Gujarat policeman Ashish Pandya, on Wednesday, denied that he even knows the policeman. The witness, in an earlier statement, had told the CBI, that he had a mobile repair and accessories shop in Jetpur in Gujarat’s Rajkot district. On Wednesday, he denied the parts of his statement, where he had claimed that Pandya would frequently visit his shop and that he had given a SIM card to him in 2006. In his earlier statement, he had said that as Pandya had not been allotted staff quarters, he was living in a guest house. On Wednesday, when the special public prosecutor BP Raju asked about it, the witness told the court that there was no guest house near his shop. The witness did not recognise Pandya, who was present in the courtroom. The prosecution declared him hostile. So far, 157 witnesses have deposed, of which 89 have turned hostile. The other witness

who deposed in court on Wednesday was a nodal officer of BSNL. He submitted before the court that the CBI had sought call data records and Customer Application Forms of a few numbers including that of accused policemen Vinodkumar Limbachiya and Kiransingh Chauhan. The CBI also submitted a list of witnesses it wants to examine including Tulsiram Prajapati’s nephew and a journalist, who had written about the arrest of Prajapati in November 2005. The court again directed the CBI superintendent to remain present before the court on Thursday regarding the witnesses’ list submitted on Wednesday.

Gujarat: Three leopards found dead near Gir sanctuary, poisoning suspected

Ahmedabad : Three leopards were found dead near the outer limits of Gujarat’s Gir Sanctuary with primary investigations pointing out to poison as a possible cause of death, a forest official said today. An official said that the carcass of a dog, suspected to have died of poisoning, was also found nearby and it is possible that the leopards died after eating the canine’s poisoned flesh. The leopard carcasses were found yesterday evening at LimbadiyaNera village in Dhari taluka of Amreli district and had been

sent for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death, said Range Forest Officer Manish Odedara. “Our primary probe suggests that all the three leopards might have consumed some poisonous substance. It is also possible that the dog may have died first due to poison and then the leopards met with the same fate after eating its contaminated flesh” said D T Vasavada, Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF), Wildlife Circle, Junagadh. He added that forensic experts have been called in to help with the investigations.

Gujarat: School apologises for suspending students with mehendi on palms

Vadodara : Parents and members of Hindu outfits stormed a convent school in Bharuch chanting Hanuman Chalisa on Wednesday morning and forced the school authorities to apologise for barring 40 girls from attending classes for having applied henna on their palms as part of the Gauri Vrat celebration. According to the parents, they were summoned by Queen of Angels Convent School on Wednesday and asked not to send their children to school until the colour of the

henna faded. As the parents protested, local BJP MLA Dushyant Patel and members of RSS, VHP, Hindu Maha Sabha and Hindu Jagran Manch reached the school, demanding a written apology. After police reached the school, principal Sister Mary in a brief address to the media said, “After today such an incident won’t be repeated in the school at all, and we respect all the religions. It is not like we give more importance to Catholic festivals.”

Clash In Ahmedabad After Rajputs ‘Object’ To Dalit Man’s Moustache

AHMEDABAD: Members of Dalit and Rajput communities clashed in an Ahmedabad neighbourhood after Karadia Rajputs, an OBC group, allegedly objected to a Dalit man wearing shorts and sporting a moustache. The clash took place in Kavitha village on Tuesday night, following which members of both the groups have filed complaints against each other at Bavla police station, PD Manvar, deputy superintendent of police, said. He added that up to five people from the Rajput community have been detained for questioning. In his complaint, Ramanbhai Makwana has alleged that seven people attacked his nephew Vijay on July 31,

when he had gone to a shop in the village. Mr Makwana has alleged that the seven people, reportedly belonging to the Rajput community, made casteist slurs against Vijay for wearing shorts and keeping a moustache, a Bavla police official said. The complainant stated that later a few Rajput men came in a pick-up truck and attacked Makwana’s brother Vinubhai and the latter’s sons Vijay and Sanjay. Another police official said a few Rajput men, including Gambhirsinh Rathod, were charged on attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

2002 Gujarat Violence: SIT Asks Court to ‘Discard’ Amit Shah’s Deposition Ahmedabad : The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday asked a special court in Gujarat to “discard” the testimony of BJP president Amit Shah in the Naroda Gam massacre in Gujarat. The team stated that Shah’s deposition was merely intended to “support” Maya Kodnani, the former Gujarat minister who is one of the accused in the trial, according to a report in the Indian Express. In his September 2017 deposition, Shah had stated that Kodnani was not present at Naroda Gam the day 11 Muslims were killed there. The BJP president claimed that Kodnani was at the state assembly at 8:30 am and that he had seen her at the Sola Civil Hospital at around 9:30 am. At around 11 am, the two were ushered out by the police, Shah had said in his testimony.

According to the Indian Express report, special public prosecutor Gaurang Vyas told the court on Wednesday, “Amit Shah recorded the statement 15 years after the incident, which is not relevant now. It was done only to support Maya Kodnani as both were MLAs back then.”

The prosecutor also stated that Shah’s presence at the civil hospital was also doubtful. Other accused in the trial like Babu Bajrangi and Jaideep Patel had not mentioned that Shah was present at the hospital, he stated. Shah’s deposition provides Kodnani with an

alibi, as several eye witnesses have testified to seeing her addressing a mob between 9 am and 10:30 am, allegedly exhorting them to kill Muslims. The SIT has also used call detail records (CDR) as evidence to corroborate her presence in Naroda Gam that day. The SIT maintains that after Naroda Gam, Kodnani proceeded to Naroda Patiya, where she addressed another mob and incited them to kill Muslims. The Naroda Patiya massacre, where 97 Muslims were killed, was the deadliest of the post-Godhra killings. international Donald Trump resurrects mobster Al Capone in tweet on aide’s treatment

Chicago : President Donald Trump appeared to suggest in a tweet Wednesday that his former campaign manager Paul Manafort is being treated worse by the justice system than notorious Chicago mob boss Al Capone. Even for a president whose tweets have led to countless arguments on cable television by pundits dissecting his words, this comparison is jarring. Capone is regarded by historians as the worst gangster in American history, a bootlegger during the Prohibition Era in the 1920s and 1930s who was willing to ruthlessly kill his rivals or at least have his men pull the trigger. A federal judge has noted that Manafort has not been charged with any crime of violence. Capone was eventually convicted and jailed. Manafort has been jailed following allegations of witness tampering but has not been convicted. Still, the two have one thing in common. Manafort’s trial is on tax evasion, the same crime that finally landed “Public Enemy No. 1” in prison. Trump tweeted, misspelling Capone’s first name of Alphonse, “Looking back on history, who was treated worse, Alfonse Capone, legendary mob boss, killer and “Public Enemy Number One,” or Paul Manafort, political operative & Reagan/Dole darling.

Northern California wildfire torches more than 1,000 homes

California : A massive wildfire in Northern California has torched more than 1,000 homes in and around the city of Redding, authorities said Wednesday as some evacuees were allowed to return home and new blazes exploded in what has become an endless summer of flame in the Golden State. “Whatever resources are needed, we’re putting them there,” Gov. Jerry Brown said at a news conference. “We’re being surprised. Every year is teaching the fire authorities new lessons. We’re in uncharted territory.” Just a month into the budget year, the state has already spent more than one-quarter of its annual fire budget, at least $125 million, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Mike Mohler said. Cal Fire said another 488 buildings, including barns and warehouses, have also been destroyed by the fire, which is now the sixth most destructive in California history. The 121,000-acre Redding-area blaze, which started July 23, forced 38,000 people from their homes and killed six. It has scorched 189 square miles (490 square kilometres) and is 35 per cent contained.

China says fully prepared for US threats on escalating trade war

Beijing : China Thursday said it is fully prepared to deal with US’ threats to escalate the spiralling trade war between the two countries and will fight back to defend its dignity and the interests of its people, Reuters quoted the commerce ministry as saying. China upholds the use of dialogue to resolve disputes but equal treatment and keeping to promises are pre-requisites for dialogue, it said in a statement. Robert Lighthizer, US Trade Representative, told Reuters that President Donald Trump directed a higher 25 percent tariff from an earlier proposed 10 per cent, because of Beijing’s refusal to meet US demands and has imposed retaliatory tariffs. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a press briefing that President Trump’s threats at “blackmail” would fail. “We would advise the United States to correct its attitude and not try to engage in blackmail. This won’t work on China,” Geng was quoted by Reuters as saying. “Secondly, we would advise the US side to return to reason, and not blindly let emotions affect their decisions, because in the end this will harm themselves,” Geng added. Despite the chill in relations between the two countries over the tariff issue, no formal talks have taken place between Washington and Beijing for weeks over Trump’s demands that China make fundamental changes to its policies on intellectual property protection, technology transfers and subsidies for high technology industries.
