Police-farmers clash near Delhi, Opposition alleges ‘brutal crackdown’

New Delhi: Thousands of farmers marching to Delhi on Tuesday morning clashed with the police and paramilitary forces at the national capital’s borders with Uttar Pradesh, prompting Opposition parties to accuse the government of a “brutal” crackdown. The farmers, who plan to march to Kisan Ghat in Delhi to press for their 15-point charter of demands, broke barricades when police stopped them by using water cannons and deflating the tyres of tractors. The authorities have used a law called Section 144 to ban the assembly of five or more persons in several areas near the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border and will continue till October 8, news agency IANS reported. “We have deployed sufficient police force apart from several companies of the para military

force and provincial armed constabulary. Talks are on with farmers since Monday. However, they will not be allowed to move to Delhi. The Delhi-Ghaziabad border has already been barricaded and sealed near Sahibabad,” said Vaibhav Krishna, Ghaziabad’s senior superintendent of police. The police crackdown was denounced by opposition parties. “On International Day of Non-Violence, the BJP’s two-year Gandhi Jayanti celebrations began with the brutal beating of farmers peacefully coming to Delhi. Now, the farmers cannot even air the grievances coming to the capital!” said Congress president Rahul Gandhi in a tweet in Hindi. Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal expressed solidarity with the farmers.

Protesting farmers ‘not satisfied’ with government assurances, won’t end stir

Thousands of protesting farmers clashed with police and paramilitary forces Tuesday after they were stopped from entering Delhi to press for their demands including remunerative crop prices and loan waivers. Farmers’ leaders who met Union home minister Rajnath Singh for discussions said the government’s assurances were not satisfactory and they will continue their agitation. Farmers are “not satisfied” with the government’s assurance to look into their demands, said Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Naresh Tikait, who is spearheading the protests. “We will discuss this and then decide on future course of action. I can’t decide anything alone, our committee will take the decision,” he added, reported news agancy.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi accuses Prime Minister Modi of failing to deliver on promises he had made in 2014.

PM Modi failed; Congress will work 24 hours to create jobs: Rahul Gandhi

Maharashtra : Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “betraying the people by making false promises” ahead of the 2014 general elections. Addressing the ‘Gandhi Sankalp Rally’ after a Congress Working Committee meeting here, he attacked Modi on a range of issues, including the Rafale fighter jet deal, rising fuel prices, unemployment and farm distress. “You trusted Modiji for four years. He promised you that there will be no ‘Made in China’, but only ‘Make in India’. But you see, everything from phones to your shoes is ‘Made in China’. “Modi made a false promise to you. He cannot give you employment. But we will work 24 hours a day to give you employment. We will waive your loans too. We have done it in 2009; we can do it again,” the Congress chief said as he urged people to repose trust

in the Congress that followed Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology. Gandhi accused Modi of striking a shady deal for the purchase of Rafale fighter jets only to benefit what he called Modi’s “bankrupt” crony. An inexperienced company had been chosen ignoring the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). He sought to know from the Prime Minister the reason behind choosing a new company in the defence deal. Attacking the government over rising fuel prices, Gandhi said: “The money paid by you (people) is going into the pockets of only a few richest people in India. This is the reality of India. The Congress is a party of the farmers, the weak and the small traders.” He also accused Modi of helping his cronies convert their black money into white following the November 2016 demonetisation.

PM Modi launches medley version of Gandhiji’s favourite bhajan Vaishnav Jan To

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a medley version of Bapu’s favourite bhajan ‘Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye’ sung by artists from over 40 countries, during the closing ceremony of the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Conference in New Delhi. As part of the year-long celebrations leading to Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, artists from over 124 countries have contributed musically and paid homage to the Mahatma through his favourite bhajan. “All Indian missions abroad identified a local artist/group to record the bhajan in the run-up to Gandhi Jayanti, which is observed on October 2. The result is an eclectic, colourful and rich rendition of the hymn infused with the local flavours of the region,” the MEA said in

a release. From Armenia to Angola, Sri Lanka to Serbia, Iraq to Iceland, prominent singers/groups have showcased their talent for the 15th century hymn that was close to Gandhi’s heart. Written by the poet Narsinh Mehta the bhajan was included in Mahatma Gandhi’s daily prayers. The different videos from world over were put together in a fusion of about five minutes to give global flavour to the bhajan. It is expected to have contribution from all the countries recognised by the UN, it said. Amongst the star performers is President Baron Divavesi Waqa of Nauru. “President Waqa’s gesture was not just a special tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary but was also a personal gift from him to Modi,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

BJP targets Shashi Tharoor for criticising Sushma Swaraj’s UN speech New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday attacked the Congress and its senior leader Shashi Tharoor for criticising external affair minister Sushma Swaraj’s recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly, stating that the Opposition party, in its bid to corner the ruling party, was hurting the country’s interests. Tharoor had described Sushma’s speech as “disappointing” and said it was aimed at only appeasing the ruling party’s voters. “Today, (Rahul) Gandhi’s Congress has lost the moral right to claim the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi’s Congress,” BJP spokesman Sudhanshu Trivedi said at a press conference. “We would want Gandhi to apologise for Tharoor’s remarks. However, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala was quick to target the BJP. “For those in power, (Mahatma) Gandhi’s thought is just a lip service. Those in power murder Gandhi’s thought. They swear by Gandhi only for optics and photo-op,” he said in Wardha. In her UNGA speech,

Swaraj had said India had made many efforts to hold talks with Pakistan and the only reason New Delhi has called off dialogue is because of Islamabad’s behaviour “Swaraj’s speech at the UNGA was India’s statement and not that of any political party,” Trivedi said. “Entire nation wants India to talk tough against Pakistan. Which force in the country wants India to take a soft line towards Pakistan?”

Political will, people’s participation can help achieve total sanitation: PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi : Political leadership, accompanied by public funding, partnership and people’s participation can help the world in achieving total sanitation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday on the occasion of the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He said till four years ago, India’s share in the world’s population that practised open defecation was 60 per cent, which has now come down to below 20 per cent. Addressing the concluding session of the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention in New Delhi, he said 90 per cent of the toilets constructed are being

used even as the government carries out constant follow-ups to ensure that cities declared open defecation free “do not fall back on old habits”. “It is the result of public participation that rural sanitation has increased from 38 per cent before 2014 to 94 per cent now,” the prime minister said. While 25 states have declared themselves as open defecation free, the number of such villages has gone up to 5 lakh, he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said till four years ago, India’s share in the world’s population that practised open defecation was 60 per cent, which has now come down to below 20 per cent.

BJP dubs Rahul Gandhi a ‘tape recorder of lies’

New Delhi : The BJP on Tuesday dubbed Congress president Rahul Gandhi a “tape recorder of lies” and said his party’s fortunes will go down as swiftly as he resorts to “falsehoods” to target the Narendra Modi government. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s media head and Rajya Sabha member Anil Baluni accused Gandhi of starting “bad conventions” of targeting his rivals with lies on a daily basis. “His lies are exposed all the time. His charge against the government over the financial support to IL&FS was exposed within a few hours yesterday. But he believes in speaking from the same script everyday and uttering one lie or another but people in India are wise and can see through it,” he said. The BJP’s attack on the Congress president came after he accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of working to divide the country and criticised him at a rally in Wardha in Maharashtra over the alleged corruption in the Rafale aircraft deal.

The road to e-vehicle adoption in India

The rupee’s dramatic depreciation in recent months has had an unexpected victim. The Indian electric vehicle (EV) industry has been hit hard. The reason for this is telling: local production of inputs for EVs is at just about 35% of total input production. Companies that are in the midst of processing orders for electric cars and buses will now see their production severely affected in terms of production costs. This neatly sums up some of the challenges facing India’s e-vehicle push. The government’s ambitions notwithstanding, the Indian EV market currently has one of the lowest penetration rates in the world. There are multiple layers to this. The first has to do with policy volatility. E-mobility is a nascent industry in India—and in most countries, for that matter. Capital costs are high and the payoff is uncertain. This is not an inviting situation. A firm policy direction can ameliorate these risks somewhat. That has been hard to come by. The unrealistic quasipolicy statement that all new vehicles should be e-vehicles by 2030 is a prime example. Thankfully, that has been toned down to 15% of all vehicle sales in the next five years, although going by the present scenario, that isn’t particularly realistic either. The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid) and Electric Vehicles (Fame) framework has been extended repeatedly. Fame II, which, until recently, was to have been launched at the beginning of this month, has been put on hold. According to various reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unhappy with its current shape and may want to shift the focus from subsidizing vehicles to subsidizing batteries. This has merit. Batteries make up 50% of EV costs. There have also been murmurs from the government about increasing focus on incentivizing electric twowheelers. This too makes sense. Two-wheelers account for 76% of the vehicles in the country and most of the fuel usage—and are currently seeing much better uptake of e-vehicles than cars. That said, this change in direction is unlikely to leave manufacturers feeling particularly confident. And inconsistencies remain. For instance, while electric vehicles are taxed at 12% under the goods and services tax (GST), batteries were taxed at 28% until recently. This has now been lowered to 18%—but the discrepancy still sits uneasily with the potential switch in Fame II’s focus. Second, this lack of policy certainty spills over into perhaps the single most important element of enabling e-vehicle usage: charging infrastructure. Considering that the present fleet of Indian EVs is incapable of traversing even city distances without running out of charge, a wide network of charging stations is imminent for attracting investment.

Las Vegas police reopen investigation into rape allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo

Las Vegas : Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has reopened a sexual assault investigation from 2009 at the request of a woman who claims that she was raped by Cristiano Ronaldo. Kathryn Mayorga recently made the details public of the alleged assault that she claims took place in a hotel room in Las Vegas in 2009. Ronaldo though has dismissed the claim, calling it “fake news.” Mayorga revealed details of the assault and an alleged out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo to German newsmagazine Der Spiegle. The Juventus forward’s representative said that he would take legal action against the magazine. The settlement involved a payment of $375,000 that was to

be made by Ronaldo to Mayorga and an agreement that she would never go public with the allegations. Her lawyers are now seeking to declare this non-disclosure agreement as void. As part of the settlement, Mayorga allegedly wrote a letter to Ronaldo that his lawyers were obliged to make sure he had read within a fortnight of the agreement. It is asserted by Mayorga’s lawyers that this commitment was never fulfilled. As part of the many documents that made up the settlement was a questionnaire that was issued for the Portuguese captain to answer. Der Spiegel claims that Ronaldo answered that “she had said ‘no’ and ‘stop’ several times.” It is unclear as to whether this was included in the final admission or not.

New Delhi : India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane hinted on Tuesday that teenage sensation Prithvi Shaw could be in line for a Test debut against West Indies. However, Rahane also cautioned his fellow Mumbaikar from curbing his attacking style of batsmanship in case he makes the cut in the playing eleven on Thursday. “I am happy for Shaw. I have seen him since his young days, we used to practice together, he is an attacking opener and done well for India A and got the reward,” Rahane said at the pre-match press conference. When asked who would partner L Rahul in the opening Test in Rajkot Rahane did not divulge

The GST collection should cross Rs 1 lakh crore because of festive season demand.

GST collections likely to top Rs 1 lakh crore in November, December New Delhi: The finance ministry expects the GST collections to cross Rs 1 lakh crore in November and December on account of festive season demand and the anti-evasion measures initiated by the revenue department. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue rose to Rs 94,442 crore in September and officials feel it could surpass the landmark one lakh crore on increased demand during festival season. “With the current trend for GST mop-up, it is expected that the monthly collections could again touch Rs 1 lakh crore around November and December,” an official said. The collections during November and December 2018 would reflect the sales and purchases made during the months of October and November 2018. According to the official, people usually hold back their purchases till Ganesh Chaturthi, which marks the onset

of festive season and fell in September this year. Besides, the revenue department’s initiative to plug loopholes in the system to curb evasion too would help in raising revenue. “The GST collection should cross Rs 1 lakh crore because of festive season demand. This is the time when people make purchases and companies offer discounts and come up with promotional offers to boost sales. We expect increase in sales which in turn will result in higher revenues for the government,” said Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan Partner L Badri Narayanan. AMRG & Associates Partner Rajat Mohan said the duo of Indian festivities and wedding season would push the overall demand, temporarily lifting the GST collections for November and December. “Controlling fiscal deficit with the help of an

increase in revenue collection is economically more feasible option than restricting government spending, even if this increase by means of implementing stringent anti-evasion measure,” Mohan said. The finance ministry official, however, has expressed the apprehension that revenues could witness a decline thereafter as sales and purchases usually taper off in the last quarter of fiscal. The finance ministry has targeted monthly GST collections to be Rs 1 lakh crore for this fiscal, but the actual mop-up has fallen short of the target month after month. The sole exception was the month of April in which the numbers exceeded Rs 1 lakh crore. 21 Asiatic lions have now died in the last 20 days at the Gir National Park in Gujarat, forest authorities said this week. The 21 lions constitute 3.5 per cent of the around 600 lions currently believed to be present in Gir. The deaths of lions in Gujarat have been in focus since mid-September when forest officials first revealed that 11 lions had died between September 12 and September 19. The death toll later went up to 14 and has now reached 21 after seven big cats died during treatment. Of the 21 lions who died, seven were found dead in the wild while the remaining 14 died under treatment. Along with

updating the death toll, the Gujarat Forest Department also revealed that some of the lions had died due to a mystery virus infection. Examination of blood samples sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune has revealed at least four of the lions died to a viral infection, the Forest Department said. Around 10 other lions died due infections spread by tick bites The revelation that four of the 21 Gir lions died due to a virus infection is significant as up until now the Forest Department had mostly blamed infighting for the unusual string of deaths. The Forest Department did not name the virus nor has it completely discounted its earlier infighting theory.
