Short News Battle of Koregaon: Why the Dalits hate Peshwas and celebrate this British ‘victory’ New Delhi : On January 1, 1818 a battalion of around 900 soldiers under the British East India Company marched from Shirur to Pune in Maharashtra to face an army consisting of 20,000 soldiers led by Baji Rao II. The battle that lasted for a very short while resulted in the death of more than 200 soldiers on the side of the British and about 500 soldiers on the side of the Peshwas. According to Scottish statesman and historian Mountstuart Elphinstone, who visited the battlefield two days later, houses had been burnt and the streets were covered with dead bodies of men and horses. While the Battle of Koregaon did not see either of the parties emerging clearly victorious, it still came to be regarded as a moment of triumph for the British, who had finally won the Anglo-Maratha war and went on to construct a ‘victory pillar’ at Koregaon.

Oppn parties attack BJP over Pune violence; ‘fascist vision’, says Rahul

Mumbai: In a scathing attack on the ruling BJP government and its parent organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday extended support to the Bhima-Koregaon battle celebration, calling it a “potent symbol” of resistance to RSS-BJP’s “fascist vision”. Lashing out at the saffron party over the Pune violence, the newly-appointed Congress President said, “the core of the RSS/ BJP’s fascist vision for India is that the Dalits should remain at the bottom of the society”. Una, Rohith Vemula and now Bhima-Koregaon

are potent symbols of the resistance, he said. CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury also slammed the BJP for the violence and said that the ideology of the RSS/BJP has always believed in suppressing those who are historically oppressed. He said the latest events in Maharashtra and several other incidents in the recent past proved the true ideology of the party. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati accused the BJP along with the RSS of instigating the Bhima-Koregaon violence. The BJP, the RSS and other ‘caste forces’ are behind this, she said.

Triple talaq bill fails to move in Rajya Sabha, Congress wants scrutiny by select panel New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha witnessed acrimonious scenes on Wednesday as the BJP and Congress sparred over the triple talaq bill, forcing Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien to adjourn the House for the day. As soon as the Upper House convened after three adjournments at 3 pm, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha last week, was tabled by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. “Even after passage of the triple talaq bill in Lok Sabha,

the practice is continuing. A woman in Moradabad was given triple talaq over dowry,” Prasad said as he introduced the landmark bill that has

provisions of “imprisonment for three years and fine” for any Muslim man who divorces his wife by uttering talaq three times in quick succession.

However, the Congress, which remained largely silent during the passage of the bill in the Lok Sabha, was not in a mood to relent this time and demanded that the legislation be sent to a Select Committee. Senior leader Anand Sharma said, “We are not opposing, we are supporting the bill. But any law has to go through scrutiny. I move the following motion, that this House being strongly committed to women’s rights, wants to refer the bill to the Select Committee.”

Killing of soldiers in terror attacks an insult: Mulayam Singh Yadav

New Delhi : Veteran SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday slammed the government over incidents of killing of security personnel in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and called for giving them a “free hand” to retaliate to cross border terrorism in the state. Raising the issue in Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour, Yadav, a former Defence Minister, said repeated targeting of the armed forces by terrorists has affected their image globally and wondered whether the government was in a “dilemma” to deal with the problem of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. “Our soldiers are the best in the

world. But now Pakistan is killing them. It is

an insult to our armed forces. It is not a small issue. What is the government’s dilemma? I have information that the armed forces have not been given free hand,” Yadav said. Yadav, who was defence minister between June, 1996 and March 1998 in the United Front government, was primarily referring to last week’s Pulwama attack. In a pre-dawn strike, five CRPF men were killed and three others injured when heavily-armed terrorists stormed the CRPF camp at Lethpora in Pulwama district on December 31. The attack was claimed by Pakistan-based Jaishe-Mohammed.

Criminalising instant talaq: Find a better way

On August 22, 2017, the Supreme Court in a historic verdict in Shayara Bano vs Union of India, invalidated the practice of instant triple talaq, or talaq-e-biddat, declaring that it was arbitrary and unconstitutional. It asked Parliament to enact a new law on triple talaq, and further said if the law doesn’t come into force within six months, the court’s injunction on triple talaq would continue. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, introduced and passed in the Lok Sabha on December 28, 2017, upheld the Supreme Court injunction banning instant triple talaq, and went a step further by criminalising it. There can’t be any doubt about the fact that instant triple talaq is an evil practice, completely negating the right of equality, security and dignity of Muslim women; and it has to go. But the major bone of contention in the bill is the criminalisation of triple talaq. It should be noted that the Supreme Court has already invalidated the act. The critics of the bill wonder why, when the act itself is not valid, its mere utterance, which is absolutely ineffective, should attract criminal penalties? Also, by criminalising this, the government is bringing a civil matter into criminal jurisdiction. The severity of the punishment and making it cognisable, which means the police can arrest the husband without judicial supervision and even without any complaint from the wife, is also under question. Supporters of the bill draw a parallel to Section 498A IPC and bigamy, which are also criminal offences. However, these supporters fail to note that bigamy is a non-cognisable offence, and if the first or the second wife does not complain, the State cannot take any action on its own. The Supreme Court has also recently issued strict guidelines that checks automatic arrests in Section 498A cases, calls for greater scrutiny by the police and magistrates, and categorically stated that non-compliance will attract disciplinary and contempt proceedings. The idea behind any law is to provide checks and balances that will provide a certain measure of protection from abuse to all parties, by individuals or by agents of the State. The criminalisation of the mere utterance of triple talaq is seen as arbitrary, and given the current socio-political atmosphere across the country, in which the members of a minority community could be lynched simply over rumours of eating beef or slaughtering cows, the fear is not unjustified that the cognisable nature of the “crime” will be misused for deliberate harassment. If punishment is to be used as a deterrent, which is an acceptable idea in itself, the nature of punishment could be fines, transfer of fixed assets to the wife or minor children, or other measures without going to the extreme of criminalising a purely civil matter. Or, if it has to be criminalised, it should be done only on the complaint of the wife, not anyone else. One of the rationales behind the Supreme Court judgment of banning instant triple talaq was that it doesn’t leave any scope for reconciliation.

And not only in Hindi, I am open to working anywhere in the country, even if it is Punjabi. I will do films in any of the languages, provided the script is good. business Budget, earnings, monsoon to influence market in 2018

New Delhi: Market sentiment in 2018 will be steered by Union Budget in February, corporate earnings, outcome of assembly elections in eight states, monsoon and global oil prices, say analysts. “Global oil prices, international commodity prices, global policies and interest rates if remain stable, we are likely to see positive sentiment continue. Any erratic changes in these parameters will trigger market movements going ahead,” said Anita Gandhi, Whole Time Director, Arihant Capital Markets. The Sensex gained 7,430.37 points, or 27.91 per cent, last year. The 30-share key index touched its lifetime high of 34,137.97 on December 27. “In 2018, we have Karnataka elections in March-April and three other northern states around the

same time. The provisions of Budget 201819 due on February 1 will also influence the outcome of this election, though economic growth/reforms and job growth are already under scrutiny,” said Deepak Jasani, Head - retail research, HDFC securities. Timely, well spread and sufficient monsoon in India will also help rural wealth and spending, having a salutary effect on consumption and GDP growth, he added. “We believe, the BSE Sensex can go up close to 34,500 levels and Nifty 50 can go close to 10,800. Also, the other catalyst for growth would be government’s focus on sectors such as clean energy, affordable housing and allied,” said Payal Pandya, Research Analyst - Wealth Research, Centrum Broking Limited.

Surat first to have CCTV cameras in courtrooms

Surat : The lower and districts courts of Surat have become the first in the state to install a well organised network of close circuit television cameras inside the courtrooms. A total of 57 cameras have been installed which became operational from Tuesday. In March last year, the Supreme Court had directed all the High Courts across the country to install CCTVs in the courtrooms of at least two districts of the state to bring in transparency. A bench of Justice A K Goel and Justice U U Lalit had said that installation of CCTV cameras in the courts would be in larger public interest, discipline and security. Acting on the apex court’s order, the Gujarat High court had directed district courts of Surat and Mehsana to install CCTVs in their courtrooms. In Surat district, there are 57 courts, including 13 fast-track courts and 44 lower courts. “We acted as per the instructions passed on to us. The work on installing CCTV network in Mehsana courts is still under progress. Once results are seen, all the courts in the state will have CCTVs in the coming months,” said a Surat district court official on condition of anonymity.

During initial interrogation, police learnt that Almeida used to charge Rs 300 from each customer and give Rs 150 to the girls whom she used to call.

Ahmedabad : A delegation of Gujarat Muslim Hitrakshak Samiti, a conglomerate of several Muslim organisations in the state, on Tuesday called on state Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki and requested the Congress not to support the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 when it is tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha a week ago with a voice vote. Though the Congress had demanded amendments in certain provisions of the Bill, it did not push for it during the discussion on the Bill. Stating that the triple talaq Bill, introduced by the Central government was “unnecessary and against the Sharia and the rights of women”, the delegation members, including women, said, “The Bill is not only

against Article 25 of the Constitution of India which guarantees religious freedom, but also goes against the recent judgment of the Supreme Court on the issue of triple talaq. It is being said that the Bill has been introduced to protect the rights of divorced women, but when the triple talaq itself shall not be legal and a valid form of divorce, then how can punishment be awarded for it? In Article 5 of the Bill, it is mentioned that the husband shall take the responsibility of maintaining the divorced wife and his children. The question is when the husband, who issues triple talaq, will be behind bars, how will he take care of his divorced wife and children? Then, after spending three years in jail, how could it be expected that the husband would be able to resume a happy married life with his wife?”

Vadodara: City-based advocate Shailesh Amin has warned M S University officials of protest during the forthcoming annual convocation of the university if the university officials fail to take action against the accused in the plagiarism case. Amin on Tuesday questioned MSU’s inaction in the plagiarism complaint which he had registered last year. Based on Amin’s complaint, a probe committee appointed by MSU had also clearly stated in its report that professor P S Choondawat, the former dean of Faculty of Arts, had cleared a PhD thesis which was plagiarised. Amin had alleged that Choondawat as head of Department of Sociology had cleared PhD thesis of professor Chandramani More from K M Shah Dental College and Hospital of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth who had plagiarised entire thesis of his student Dr Krushna Thakkar. The committee formed by MSU had stated in its report that all the charges or allegations made byAmin in his complaint are “proved true completely”. Although the committee’s report was first placed in the November meeting of MSU’s syndicate members, the members had refrained from taking any decision or action. Later, even during the December meeting of syndicate members, the university’s syndicate failed to take any decision regarding the plagiarism episode.

people, will act as per raj dharma: Vijay Rupani

Vadodara : After being tacitly warned by the priest of the Swaminarayan temple in Vadtal that BJP did not perform well in the rural areas in the just concluded Assembly elections, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Tuesday said his government has to win the hearts of the people and he will do his duty as per raj dharma.“Yes, we have won the elections, but we have to win the hearts of the people. We are not the rulers of Gujarat, but the servants of the people. CM means Chief Minister, but CM also means common man. It means

to fulfil the aspirations and expectations of the common man,” Rupani said after offering prayers at the temple before assuming charge of his office. Earlier, welcoming the CM, Maharaj Ghanshyam Prasad Das, the priest of the Swaminarayan temple who had appealed

the devotees of the sect to vote for the BJP in the elections, warned him that his government was “yet to win the hearts” of the rural voters, especially the farmers. “When Vijaybhai (Rupani) saheb came before the elections to seek blessings, our Acharya saheb tied a rakshasutra on him.

Gandhinagar: After Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel created a stir over allocation of portfolios not befitting his status, Gujarat Koli community veteran Parshottam Solanki on Tuesday threw a tantrum asking Chief Minister Vijay Rupani to give him “better”, “more than one” and a Cabinet status after winning five terms in a row. Solanki, once accused by the Srikrishna Commission in connection with the 1993 Mumbai communal riots, also held out a veiled threat that his Koli community would “demonstrate this during the 2019 Lok Sabha election whom they support and who they won’t”. The minister, who represents the Koli community that has a whopping 26 percent population concentrated in the key Saurashtra region, called on Rupani and told him that it was a sentiment of his community to have a better say for him in the government. He said a decision about this could be taken after three days,” Solanki told reporters at the Sachivalaya in Gandhinagar. “I am not

international In his first tweet in 2018, Trump has accused Pakistan of basing its relationship with the US on ‘nothing but lies and deceit.’

Trump’s ‘incomprehensible’ remarks have ‘deeply disappointed’ Pakistan

Islamabad: Pakistan on Tuesday expressed “deep disappointment” over US President Donald Trump’s scathing remarks against it, saying the accusations strike with “great insensitivity” at the “trust” between the two countries. Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi convened a National Security Council meeting in Islamabad after Trump strongly rebuked the country, accusing it of giving nothing to the US but “lies and deceit” and sheltering terrorists in return for USD 33 billion in aid over the last 15 years. The NSC meeting, attended

by the powerful military chief and other top senior military and government officials, observed that statements by the US leadership were “completely incomprehensible as they contradicted facts manifestly, struck with great insensitivity at the

trust between two nations built over generations, and negated the decades of sacrifices made by the Pakistani nation”. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry also attended the NSC meeting, which discussed Pakistan’s response to President

Trump’s fresh tirade while also reviewing the country’s overall foreign policy, the Dawn News reported. Following the NSC meeting, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif in a tweet challenged Trump’s claim that the US has given Pakistan more than USD 33 billion dollars as aid over the last 15 years, saying verification by an audit firm would prove the US president wrong. The foreign minister offered that Trump could hire a US-based audit firm “on our expense” to verify the USD 33 billion aid figure and “let the world know who is lying and deceiving”.

asking for anything, it is my community that is asserting and feels that I, since I am the only one in the government, be given a respectable due. The Chief Minister himself keeps 12 portfolios, some first-time ministers have three

to four good portfolios, but I have only one and that too a negligible one,” the Minister of State for Fisheries said. Solanki was elected from the Bhavnagar Rural Assembly seat for the fifth time in a row, thanks largely to his Koli community. The Kolis form 26 percent of the population in Gujarat and have strong presence in over 40 assembly seats. Meanwhile, the BJP high command galvanised into damage control and drafted senior minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama (who had also played a key role in resolving the Nitin Patel issue) to assuage Solanki. Chudasama told reporters, flanked by Solanki: “He is not angry with the party. He is a senior leader and has only expressed his community’s sentiments to the Chief Minister. This does not tantamout to mean that he is angry or there is some crisis in the party. Please don’t compare (him with) Nitin Patel. It was a different issue which has been already sorted out.” Solanki went on, in front of Chudasama: “I have been given a single department of Fisheries unlike the last four times when I was also given Animal Husbandry. Looking at the population of Kolis across the state, what do I do with one ministry. I obviously don’t feel going to office.

If the president were to order a strike, he would identify himself to military officials at the Pentagon with codes unique to him.

What if Trump’s ‘bigger,’ ‘more powerful’ button does not exist?

Washington: President Donald Trump boasted that he has a bigger and more powerful “nuclear button’’ than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un does but the president doesn’t actually have a physical button. The president’s Tuesday evening tweet came in response to Kim’s New Year’s address, in which he repeated fiery nuclear threats against the United States. Kim said he has a “nuclear button” on his office desk and warned that “the whole territory of the US is within the range of our nuclear strike.” Trump mocked that assertion, writing, “Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” But despite ratcheting up the tension, Trump doesn’t really have a nuclear button. The process for launching a nuclear strike is secret and complex and involves the use of a nuclear “football,” which is carried by a rotating group of military officers everywhere the president goes and is equipped with communication tools and a book

with prepared war plans. If the president were to order a strike, he would identify himself to military officials at the Pentagon with codes unique to him. Those codes are recorded on a card known as the “biscuit” that is carried by the president at all times. He would then transmit the launch order to the Pentagon and Strategic Command. Earlier Tuesday, Trump sounded open to the possibility of an inter-Korean dialogue after Kim made a rare overture toward South Korea in a New Year’s address.
