ENGLISH DAILY MORNING REPUTED NEWS PAPER, AHMEDABAD EDITION Editor : Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Short News No vacancy for prime minister’s post in 2019, says Naqvi Panaji : There is no vacancy for the prime minister’s post in 2019, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Sunday said, and expressed hope that BJP-led coalition will retain power in the next Lok Sabha polls. The “antiModi front” has over two dozen aspirants for the prime ministerial post but they will not be able to provide stability, he claimed. Naqvi alleged that some political forces were trying to disturb the Narendra Modi-led government’s agenda of development, peace and prosperity by creating fear among the minorities. The minorities in India are safe and their rights are secured, he asserted. “The people of the country are with the development agenda of the Modiled government. But there are some people who want to hamper it,” he said at a press conference at Panaji.

Government will maintain law and order at any cost, says Manohar Lal Khattar

Rohtak : Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said in a democracy, everyone has the right to raise their voice in a peaceful manner, but the government would maintain law and order in the state at any cost. His remarks came after Jat community members in the state threatened to oppose programmes attended by the chief minister and his ministers for not implementing quota in government jobs and education and not withdrawing cases filed in connection with the 2016 quota stir. “In a democracy, everyone has the right to raise his voice. But no one can obstruct others from having their say. The state government would maintain law and order at any cost and in every given situation,” he said.

Aircraft carrying Sushma Swaraj goes incommunicado for 14 minutes

New Delhi : An Indian Air Force flight carrying External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj from Thiruvananthapuram to Mauritius went incommunicado for around 14 minutes after leaving the Indian airspace, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed on Sunday. The AAI, however, ruled out a mid-air scare despite authorities at the Mauritius Air traffic control activating the emergency code, INCERFA. In the event of a plane losing contact with an air traffic control, INCERFA is activated only after waiting for 30 minutes since its last contact. Since the IAF flight was carrying a VIP passenger, AAI said, the Mauritius Air traffic control (ATC) must have raised an alarm before the stipulated time. However, the AAI did not elaborate over what caused the delay in making contact with the Mauritius ATC after entering the tiny island’s airspace. The IAF flight had left for Mauritius from Thiruvananthapuram at 2.08 pm. After it left the Indian airspace, it was handed over to the Male ATC which established contact with the flight at 4.44 pm IST. Soon after it was handed over to the Mauritius ATC, the incident unfolded leading to panic. However, everyone heaved a sigh of relief when the aircraft came in contact with the ATC there at 4.58 pm, the AAI said.

Indian armed forces building partnerships in vital Indo-Pacific region, says PM Modi Expounding his vision of the Indo-Pacific region in a keynote address, Modi said, “India does not see the Indo-Pacific Region as a strategy or as a club of limited members, nor as a grouping that seeks to dominate”.

Singapore : Describing the Indo-Pacific as a “natural region”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India’s armed forces, especially the Navy, are building and expanding partnerships in the strategically vital region for peace and security as well as humanitarian assistance. Ten countries of South East Asia connect the two great oceans – the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean — in both the geographical and civilisational sense, Modi said. Inclusiveness, openness and ASEAN centrality and unity, therefore, lie at the heart of the new Indo-Pacific, Prime Minister Modi said at the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue here on Friday evening. Expounding his vision of the Indo-Pacific region in a keynote address, Modi said, “India does not see the Indo-

A day in the life of a family in Shimla amidst the city’s crippling water crisis Shimla : Not long ago, Rachna Jhina Sharma helped her eight-year-old daughter with a school essay on water conservation — ‘Imagine your life without water’. “I struggled so much then to think of all that can go wrong. Now, I only have to look around me… I could write a full chapter,” says Sharma, 37, a homemaker at Kasumpti locality in Shimla. “Look Araina,” she says, calling out to her daughter. “If there is no running water in the tap, how will we wash our utensils? No washing… no cooking. Our house will be dirty and unhygienic. Isn’t that a health hazard?” the political science graduate asks her daughter, who, now that the homework has long been dealt with, doesn’t look particularly interested. Barring a day’s “irregular” supply, the taps in her home have been dry for the last 12 days. “I have lived in Shimla all my life, but never seen a crisis this severe. These days, I invariably wake up in the middle of the night, and the thought of sending my daughter to school in her unwashed uniform keeps me up.

Pacific Region as a strategy or as a club of limited members, nor as a grouping that seeks to dominate”. The Indian armed forces, especially the Navy, are building partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region for peace and security, as well as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, he said. They train, exercise and conduct goodwill missions across the region. For example, with Singapore, India has the longest uninterrupted naval exercise, which is in its 25th year now, he said, announcing that India will start a new tri-lateral exercise with Singapore soon and India hopes to extend it to other ASEAN countries. “We work with partners like Vietnam to build mutual capabilities. India conducts Malabar Exercise with the United States and Japan.

Qaiser Amin Bhat, who was among the hundreds who had turned out to protest against the firing of tear gas shells outside the Jama Masjid on May 25, was knocked down by a CRPF vehicle at Srinagar’s Nowhatta.

Protests over youth crushed by CRPF vehicle, grenade blasts put Srinagar on edge Srinagar : Srinagar remained on edge on Saturday after three grenade explosions in the span of three hours, and fierce protests over the death of a 21-year-old who had been run over and killed by a CRPF vehicle a day earlier. Qaiser Amin Bhat, who was among the hundreds who had turned out to protest against the firing of tear gas shells outside the Jama Masjid on May 25, was knocked down by a CRPF vehicle at Srinagar’s Nowhatta. Doctors at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, where he was taken, said Bhat died of “lung contusion” late Friday evening. Another youth, Younus, who was also admitted to the hospital with injuries, is reported to be stable. While

Bhat’s family said he fell as the vehicle hit him, the CRPF spokesperson in Srinagar alleged that a mob charged at one of their vehicles in which one of the officers of the 28th Battalion, Second-in-Command S S Yadav, was travelling. “The officer was there to survey the deployment

on Friday. The vehicle came under attack from hundreds of youth in the area. They attempted to move out of there and had they not done that, they would have been overpowered and lynched,” he said, adding that the officer was accompanied by four escort personnel and a driver.

Nagpur : Senior Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde on Sunday said former President Pranab Mukherjee accepting an invite to attend an RSS event was “not wrong” as the latter was a secular person and a very good thinker. “Pranab Mukherjee is a secular person. He will always put forth a secular view which he will do there (at the RSS event) as well. He is a very good thinker, and his going there and speaking on that platform is very important,” Shinde said. He said that Mukherjee accepting the invite was not wrong and “we would be more than pleased” if his thoughts bring some improvement in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Madhya Pradesh: Congress accuses BJP of duplicating voter entries, EC orders probe

Opposition unity sign of PM Modi’s popularity, NDA will win in 2019: Smriti Irani New Delhi : As India successfully test-fired the indigenously developed nuclear-capable Long Range Ballistic Missile Agni-5, it moved a step closer towards joining the exclusive club of countries with ICBMs (missiles with a range of over 5,000-5,500km), alongside the US, Russia, China, France and the UK. Coming on the back of China deploying missiles in Tibet Autonomous Region bordering India, the move is sure to rattle a few nerves in Beijing, which has previously criticised New Delhi over the Agni 5. The surfaceto-surface missile was launched

Ahmedabad : A united Opposition was proof of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity, said Union textile minister Smriti Irani on Saturday while interacting with mediapersons in Ahmedabad as part of the NDA government’s outreach initiative to mark the completion of four years in power. “The coming together of all Opposition parties (against BJP) is the biggest example of Narendra Modi’s prowess and popularity.

Opposition has given a back-handed compliment to Prime Minister that they cannot fight alone,” Irani said. She expressed confidence that despite a united Opposition, the BJP-led NDA will get clear majority in 2019 Lok Sabha elections and form the government. Irani also targeted Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) which is part of the “consolidated Opposition” for allegedly indulging in targeted killings of BJP workers in West Bengal.

New Delhi : Hours after a Congress delegation, led by Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath, lodged a complaint with the Election Commission regarding discrepancies in the voters’ list of Madhya Pradesh, the poll watchdog ordered an investigation into the matter. Nath questioned how the number of voters increased by 40 per cent at a time when the population in the state rose by only 24 per cent in the last 10 years. The EC has formed two teams to probe the allegations and they will visit Narela, Bhojpur,

Seoni-Malwa and Hoshangabad assembly seats to ascertain how the discrepancies occurred. The teams have been asked to furnish their report by June 7.“We’ve provided evidence to the Election Commission that there are approximately 60 Lakh fake voters registered in the voting list. These names have been deliberately registered. Ye prashasanik laparvaahi nahi prashasanik durupyog hai (this is not an administrative carelessness, but an administrative misuse).” Kamal Nath said.

Positive Chinese move on Doklam

The first visit of a Chinese military delegation to India after the winding down of the Doklam standoff is also the first concrete result of the informal Wuhan summit between PM Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping. Doklam provides a template for resolving the sensitive border issue without letting it go into a spin, while, at the same time, recognising all the underlying issues and respective positions. Both countries have managed to handle the problem with tact, diplomacy and appreciation of each other’s interests, some of which are irreconcilable. The approach is pragmatic, because it has been accompanied by a build-up on both sides, indicating that neither side harbours any illusions about the potential threat. China had unilaterally suspended defence exchanges following the border standoff. Although tensions have calmed along the line-of-actual control (LAC), at the tactical level, both sides are continuing to build up their ground forces on the inhospitable terrain. The wideranging strategic build-up includes creation of more advanced facilities to support respective bases, with the deployment of ground attack aircraft support and warplanes. But, at the political and diplomatic levels, the two countries are pursuing a process of normalisation. There have been occasional face-offs in the past, but the two sides had always managed to maintain peace and tranquillity along the disputed 4,000-km border until the Indian Army intervened in Doklam to block a Chinese road-building project in the disputed territory, leading to the standoff and the subsequent backing off by the Chinese. The new approach also reflects the changes that have taken place in the nature of Sino-Indian relations over time, making it more complex due to additional layers of play. The two countries are now major trade partners, with India importing large quantities of merchandise from China. With China emerging as a leading economic power, with its mighty investment muscle, the two Asian powers stand to gain a lot by cooperating, rather than confronting each other. And both sides are equally aware of the potential of such a robust relationship. This would also leave scope for dealing with pressing issues of concern. One is the water dispute over the Brahmaputra, which originates in Tibet and flows down to India before entering Bangladesh, where it joins the Ganges. Under a trilateral pact, China is supposed to share with India and Bangladesh all data about upstream movement and quality of water. But China has, so far, refused to share this year’s data, which is very important to India as the river gets severely flooded during the monsoon, causing huge losses.

With every tweet and every film, the actor manages to irk a section of the audience and then, of course, the trolling begins. But she always had her ways to get back to them. This time too, Swara did something similar. Swara is being trolled for her character Sakshi from recently released Veere Di Wedding. In one of the scenes, Sakshi (Swara) is seen masturbating on screen. The sequence did not go down well with many. And one of the several tweets on the subject caught the attention of many, including Swara. The tweet read, “Hey @ReallySwara just watched #VeereDiWedding wth my grandmother. We got embarrassed when that masturabation scene came on screen. as we came out of the theater my grandmother said “I’m hindustan and I am ashamed of #VeereDiWedding.” An interesting fact about this ‘paid troll’ is the fact that it seems to be taking a dig at Swara’s placard protest after the Kathua rape case.

Saleem says the response he received for the trailer of Race 3 is something that he never got even after putting together all of his filmography.

Saqib Saleem: I’m a true blue Rajini fan, Kaala will be a game changer for Huma

Mumbai : Saqib Saleem has acted in a number of films since his film debut but the actor believes that it will be the Salman Khan-starrer Race 3 which will help him connect with the audiences. The 30-yearold actor debuted as an actor with Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge in

2011 and since then has worked in films such as Mere Dad Ki Maruti, Bombay Talkies and Hawaa Hawaai. Though his performances in the films were praised by the critics, none of them proved to be a box office hit, and Saqib now feels that courtesy the superstar’s huge fan

following, the dry spell for him will come to an end. “Though my work has been liked in the films that I have done so far, none of them have done the numbers that astound anybody. The films have never graduated to the next step, where people have said, ‘what a film’.

Phamous actor Jimmy Sheirgill: Once you’re out of costume, you’re out of character

Mumbai : Jimmy Sheirgill describes himself as an actor sans the “method” and someone who consciously chose to walk away from the sticky mould of a chocolate boy. The actor says his takeaway from over a 20-yearlong career is that he slides in and out of a role when he is out of the camera frame. “I wouldn’t call myself a method actor. Method acting is a deeper concept. You have to constantly be that character. You move like him, talk and behave like him till the time you’re shooting the film. “I can’t be living and breathing my characters all the time. That’s not been my learning. When there’s a break, you’re out of the costume… You’re out of the character. But when the shoot’s on, you do your job with sincerity and honesty,” Sheirgill said. The 47-year-old actor, who started off with films such as Maachis, Mohabbattein, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai and Dil Hai Tumhara, says he reconsidered his decision of taking up “less prominent”, “meatier” roles early in his career.

Veere Di Wedding box office collection day 2: Kareena Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor starrer earns Rs 22.95 crore New Delhi : After a smashing beginning at the box office with Rs 10.70 crore, the Ekta Kapoor production Veere Di Wedding has managed to rake in Rs 12.25 crore on its second day of business, taking the total collection to Rs 22.95 crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the figures on his Twitter account and also mentioned the possibility of the film’s weekend collection to close around Rs 35 crore. The film, starring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara

Bhasker, and Shikha Talsania, is a female buddy film in the vein of Sex and the City. The film certainly got traction among the youth with its clumsy, foulmouthed lead actors. Taran shared the film has witnessed an upward trend. He wrote, “#VeereDiWedding witnesses an UPWARD TREND on Day 2… Sun biz is expected to be in double digits too… Weekend should comfortably close at 35 cr+, as per trends… Fri 10.70 cr, Sat 12.25 cr. Total: 22.95 cr. India biz.”

England vs Pakistan, 2nd Test: England build lead, pressure on Pakistan

london : Every England batsmen contributed but not one reached a halfcentury as Joe Root’s side ratcheted up the pressure on Pakistan in the second Test to lead by 128 at the end of a rainaffected second day at Headingley on Saturday. By the late close, England had reached 302 for seven with Jos Buttler (34) and Sam Curran (16) still at the crease. After the morning session was lost to the weather, England mixed watchful defence with occasional attack to increase their stranglehold on the game and further their chances of levelling the two-Test series. Their batsmen were heavily criticised for lack

of application during their nine-wicket first-Test defeat but looked much more impressive in Leeds, building a strong platform from which their bowlers can attack on Sunday. The only thing lacking from England’s point of view was an individual score of note as Root (45), Dominic Bess (49), Dawid Malan (28), Jonny Bairstow (21) and then Buttler all kept the scoreboard ticking over without anyone threatening three figures. Resuming on 106 for two when the rain relented, England showed their aggressive intentions by taking 21 in the first three overs, a flow of runs helped by some sloppy fielding from the visitors.

Rohit Sharma to become first Indian cricketer to throw ceremonial ‘First Pitch’ for baseball club Seattle Mariners MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has been invited to throw the ceremonial ‘First Pitch’ by Major League Baseball club Seattle Mariners. Rohit, who is on a three-city US tour, will become the first Indian cricketer to be given this honour. According to a media release, Rohit will throw the ceremonial ‘First Pitch’ as a pregame activity against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, June 3, at Safeco Field, which is the home ground of Seattle Mariners, at 12.30 pm Pacific Standard Time (1 AM IST, June 4) The historic ritual of the baseball league in America involves a guest of honour invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch

to mark the start of the game, the release further said. On a US tour as a part of ‘Dash-Legends of Cricket Series’, Rohit will be visiting San Francisco/Bay Area, Seattle and Los Angeles. He will also participate in a series of cricket clinics and fan meet and greets. During IPL 2018, Rohit added another feather to his cap by becoming the first Indian player to hit 300 sixes in T20s across all tournaments. He, however, failed to take his side Mumbai Indians to the play-offs. Due to his inconsistent performances in South Africa, Rohit has been dropped from India’s squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Bengaluru, starting June 14.

Dehradun : In less than two weeks, Afghanistan will experience what Bangladesh felt 18 years ago when they played a Test for the first time. Come June 14, the passionate Afghan players will find out that the five-day version of the game is a different beast altogether but Bangladesh skipper, Shakib Al Hasan, has backed them to do well. Bangladesh play Afghanistan in a three match T20I series starting in Dehradun on Sunday. “They have come a long way, especially in the last few years. They have world class players in the squad and they deserve the Test status,” said Hasan, who has experienced the best and worst times in Bangladesh cricket history, on

the eve of the opening T20. Asked what kind of exposure Afghanistan should get going forward in Tests, the star allrounder added: “As long as they play the top teams regularly irrespective of the format. That should give them enough exposure.” Bangladesh have themselves endured tough time in the longest format ever since they played their inaugural Test against India in 2000. The subcontinental side has surely become a potent pack at home but with 10 wins, 80 losses and 16 draws from 106 games, Bangladesh remain determined to improve their record notwithstanding the famous victories against England and Australia in the last couple of years.

Sanjita Chanu dope test: Manipur CM writes to Rajyavardhan Rathore to intervene Jos Buttler said that the pressure of performing in front of the IPL crowd as an overseas player gave him a lot of confidence.

Manipur : Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday sought the intervention of Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore in the doping controversy involving Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sanjita Chanu while also suggesting that there could be an error in the identification of the sample of the Manipuri weightlifter. Sanjita, who won a gold in women’s 53 kg class in the recent Gold Coast CWG,

has been handed a provisional suspension by the International Weightlifting Federation after her ‘A’ sample tested positive for anabolic steroid testosterone. The Manipur CM said there could have been “mixing up or exchange” of the dope sample of Sanjita taken in the United States in November last year. “I am informed that the International Weightlifting Federation in a communication dated May 15 has provisionally

Taj Declaration to Beat Plastic Air India’s Mumbai Pollution adopted in Agra building to be sold to

Agra : A Taj Declaration to Beat Plastic Pollution was adopted here today as part of which efforts would be made to make the 500-metre area around the historic ivorywhite marble monument litter-free and phase out single-use plastic. The adoption of the declaration - in presence of Minister of State for Environment Mahesh Sharma, UN Environment Programme Executive Director Erik Solheim, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador Diya Mirza - came ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5. Before the adoption of the declaration, the Culture Ministry held a stake-holders’ workshop chaired by Sharma. The workshop focussed on curbing pollution near the 17th-century monument and drawing short-term and long-term plans to deal with the problem. According to an official statement, a pledge was taken to make the 500-metre area around the Taj Mahal litter-free and take steps to

phase out single-use plastic from the area. Sharma said India and the whole world is today facing the problem of pollution caused by excessive use of plastics. “It is a historic moment that the message of Beat Plastic Pollution is being given from the iconic Taj Mahal not only to the people of Agra and the country but to the whole world,” he told reporters. Sharma said it is an appropriate occasion to spread Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachch Bharat message from the Taj. He said the government is committed to Agra’s holistic development in which the Centre, the state, and the local administration will work together under a single umbrella. Solheim expressed happiness that the UN slogan of Beat Plastic Pollution for this year’s Environment Day on June 5 is being highlighted from the Taj Mahal. The coming together of all the stake-holders is heartening, he said.

IOC taps solar power to deliver LPG on top of the world

NEW DELHI: State-run IndianOil Corporation is harnessing solar power to make cooking gas refills available to homesteads and security establishments dotting the cold desert of Ladakh – also known as ‘roof of the world’ – in J&K as India’s largest oil refiner and fuel retailer moves to reduce its carbon footprint. The company has switched its LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) bottling plant at Leh, the headquarters of the country’s largest district by area, from diesel generating set to an on-site 100 kw (kilo watt) solar power plant built at cost of over Rs One crore. Essentially a frontier town situated at an elevation of 11,500 feet, Leh has turned into a major tourist attraction during the

summer but is not connected to the national power grid. State-run utility PowerGrid has established a transmission line for wheeling power from a 45 MW hydel plant at Alchi,

cites sample number 1599176,” he added. He said inferring from the communication of the IWF, the sample identification was “conflicting and the report seems to be dubious”. “It could also be a suspected case of mixing up or exchange of sample of the Manipuri athlete with some other athlete due to which two different sample numbers are quoted in the suspension order,” the Manipur CM said.

about 75 Kms from Leh, but supply remains patchy. Since the plant needs uninterrupted power all through the year, IOC has been running the plant on generators, burning 45,000 litres

of diesel annually. Solar power will help avoid emission and help in air quality management. The bottling plant is the energy lifeline for lakhs of soldiers and civil population, especially in the long, harsh winter when the two road links remain blocked and temperature often drops to minus 30 degrees centigrade. JNPT: Nitin Gadkari

MUMBAI: Air India’s iconic 23-storey building at Nariman Point here will be sold to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust to keep the ownership of what was once the carrier’s headquarters with the government, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said. The government is looking at selling Air India’s building on the Marine drive as well as ground handling and aircraft maintenance units after a plan to sell the ailing state carrier failed to attract buyers.Gadkari said while the valuation of the building will be worked out between the ministries of civil aviation and shipping, the building after the same would continue to be called ‘Air India’ with the carrier’s emblem, which is visible from the Arabian Sea. The building, which was the airline’s headquarters till February 2013 before it was vacated as part of its asset-monetisation plan, is considered as a prime property and expected to fetch high valuations. “There was talk about selling the building. I said

to (civil aviation ministry) don’t sell it. We live in Mumbai, it is our icon. The emblem of Air India can be seen from the sea. It is a matter of our pride. They said we don’t have money to pay employees. “I told them you decide the price, I will ask JNPT to buy it. The building should remain with the government. Both the secretaries will sit together and decide the value and we will pay for it,” Gadkari said. The minister was speaking at the executive meeting of Federation of PTI Employees’ Unions here last night. People of Mumbai would be “pained” to see the building being bought by any individual in private capacity. Therefore, the government must retain its ownership, he said, adding that there was no shortage of funds for the purpose. “We may give it on rent to government offices (on buying the building). But its name will remain after Air India. That emblem (of Air India) will remain there,” he said.

In Saurashtra, stepwells are shrines and a source of water

AHMEDABAD: In a land where water is scarce, it seems inevitable that a source of the precious liquid is a life-saver. And the place from which water can be attained becomes revered. That’s exactly what seems to have happened in stepwells across Saurashtra, many of which have seen idols of deities installed and actively worshipped. It certainly seems to have been the case in Virpur, which lies on the well-travelled road connecting Rajkot to important coastal towns like Somnath. In the heart of the town lies the Minal vav, named after its patron-builder Minaldevi, mother of the Chalukya ruler Siddharaja Jayasimha (reign 1092-1142). Dated by local historians to the beginning of the 12th century, the vav is now less a source of water and more a shrine. The place is filled with Hindu icons many of which have faded with time but whatever is left is adequate to give a glimpse of just how a well became a place of faith. A flight of steps leads down into the dilapidated vav. On either side of the first pavilion tower are niches with the remains of idols in both. The idols, embedded into the wall, are eroded and fading. There is a fading

icon of Sheshasayi Vishnu, sometimes erroneously interpreted as a representation of Minaldevi. This Vishnu, sometimes embellished with cloth in a niche coated in saffron, is the central figure of the stepwell-shrine. Another striking icon is a set of five celestial figures, their faces faded, each with a creature at his feet. Many of the niches have contemporary idols placed next to the fading ones. If one spends some time at the Minal vav, the reason behind how it became a shrine becomes apparent. For centuries, the vav has been the congregation point for women of the town. In an earlier era, they came together to collect water. Today, despite having piped water in their houses, they come together to worship at the shrine. Anyone would imagine that the water of the stepwell – the vav’s raison d’être – would be well-maintained in so revered a place. Unfortunately, that’s not quite the case. The well-shaft has become a dumping ground for debris and waste material. When a visitor walks past the sacred niches of the vav towards the shaft, the whiff of a nasty smell becomes pronounced.

Steel charkha to be installed at Sabarmati riverfront

AHMEDABAD: The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has begun the process of installing a “charkha” (spinning wheel) made of stainless steel in front of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena said. The installation on the bank of the Sabarmati river, opposite to the ashram, will mark the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi, which will be celebrated in 2019. Much like the Taj Mahal and the Lal Quila on opposite banks of the Yamuna river at Agra, the “charkha” would be a first-of-its-kind in Gujarat, the native state of Mahatma Gandhi, Saxena said. The 11-foot-tall, 22-foot-long, 6.5-foot-broad spinning wheel is made of high-quality chromium-nickel stainless and is corrosion resistant, non-magnetic and will not get hardened due to heat, the KVIC said in a press release. Saxena said after getting the official consent for the installation of the “charkha” from the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited, the KVIC began the piling work of a four-foot-high granite platform near gate number 3 of Subhas Bridge Riverfront Park. “It would be a proud moment for the KVIC as the nation’s global symbol of peace, non-violence and self-reliance would spread its legacy across the world. “It was the dream and vision of our Prime Minister, Narendra Modiji, to take charkha to the global level and the KVIC has started taking this tool of warp and weft of our social fabric abroad, following our PM’s vision,” he added. Over the last three years, the KVIC has installed the world’s largest wooden “charkha” at the Delhi airport and a 12 feet by 25 feet steel “charkha” at Rajiv Chowk in the national capital.

Donald Trump aide says Canada’s Justin Trudeau overreacting to trade dispute

Washington : Trade frictions between the United States and Canada are a “family quarrel,” President Donald Trump’s economic adviser said on Sunday, brushing aside concerns expressed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as an overreaction. The Trump administration said on Thursday it was moving ahead with tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, ending a two-month exemption and potentially setting the stage for a trade war with some of America’s top allies. Trudeau responded by calling the tariffs an affront to the longstanding security partnership between Canada and the United States. “I think he’s overreacting,” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said of Trudeau on the “Fox News Sunday” program. Kudlow said the steel and aluminum tariffs on US allies “may go on for a while” or “they may not,” because the matter is subject to negotiation. Trump also has been critical of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, saying it has harmed the United States economically, and the three countries are now engaged in renegotiation talks.

North Korea state media says Syria’s Assad wants to meet Kim

AHMEDABAD: Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel on Sunday alleged that leaders of his outfit, Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), were paid by some businessmen through the ruling BJP to put obstructions in his stir. Hardik made his comment after a video went viral showing a Suratbased businessman, Mukesh Patel, saying that he can negotiate about money, if the outfit’s leaders drop the idea of agitation against the government. The video went viral in different community groups, after which Hardik also alleged that his former aides, who had

either rejected him as a leader or joined the BJP were paid big sums. “Allegations were levelled at me by using my former aides after paying them huge amounts. They used to allege that I was deviating from this agitation, but they are all exposed now. The people who can cheat their own conscience cannot remain firm with the community,” said Hardik. Hardik mentioned his former colleagues including Dinesh Bambhania, Reshma Patel, Varun Patel, Chirag Patel, Ketan Patel and Botad PAAS convener Dilip Sabva alleging that all of them had been bought by the BJP.

Kutch sailor in Iran jail: Wife Gujarat ATS nabs seeks Parshottam Rupala’s help Mumbai man

AHMEDABAD: The wife of Umar Saleh Mohammed Thaim — a Kutch sailor languishing in an Iran jail since 2014 — has written to Union minister of state for agriculture Parshottam Rupala seeking his intervention to expedite Thaim’s release. Iranian authorities want Thaim to pay a penalty of Rs 58.78 lakh for his release. But his family says it is unable to pay such a huge amount as its sole earning member is in jail. Thaim’s wife Nurjan and his brother Noormohammed have sought Rupala’s help to have Thaim released in “the holy month of Ramzan”. Nurjan has also sent the minister the two letters she has received from the Iranian authorities demanding the penalty. “We cannot pay this heavy fine, so we request you and our government to please request the Iran government to show mercy and release him in this holy month and waive all the fine,” says

international

the letter written by Nurjan to Rupala on June 1. Thaim, 47, who belongs to Mandvi, was supposed to be released from the Minab prison during the ongoing month of Ramzan. But when his younger brother, Ibrahim, went to Iran to inquire about his release, he was told by the Iranian authorities to pay the penalty. The fine imposed by Iranian authorities originally amounted to Rs 97 lakh in Indian rupees, but considering his four years of labour in jail, and factoring some concessions, Iranian authorities may let him off with the reduced fine. Thaim was accused of smuggling diesel and of illegal intrusion by Iran. His boat was seized and he was jailed along with 11 other crew members in 2014. Thaim’s family, however, maintains that Thaim’s boat, ‘Safeena al Shena’ had strayed into Iranian waters due to strong winds and rough sea, while on its way from Dubai to Yemen.

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat AntiTerrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested Bhadresh Mehta, 61, a resident of Infocity Tower, Narayan Dabholkar Road, Mumbai, who had obtained a loan from a public sector bank by mortgaging a land parcel in Dehgam after forging documents. The accused has been handed over to the Gujarat CID crime for further investigation. Mehta, of the Mumbaibased firm Bhadresh Agro Venture Ltd, had obtained a loan of Rs 75 crore by forging the documents of a plot of land belonging to Alpesh

Saudi threatens military action if Qatar deploys anti-aircraft missiles: report

Paris : Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has threatened to take military action if Qatar installs a Russian air defence system, France’s Le Monde newspaper reported. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates severed diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar last year, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism, which it denies. Qatar and Russia signed an agreement on military and technical cooperation last year. Qatar’s ambassador to Russia was quoted as saying in January that it was in talks to buy the Russian S-400 missile air defence systems. Le Monde said that Saudi King Salman had written a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, expressing his profound concern over negotiations between Doha and Moscow and the possibility that Qatar could deploy the missiles. “The kingdom would be ready to take all necessary measures to eliminate this defence system, including military action,” Le Monde quoted the letter to Macron as saying. It said the letter had been sent “recently”, but was not more specific. Salman asked Macron for his assistance to prevent the sale of the missiles and preserve peace in the region, Le Monde said. The French president’s office and the Saudi government’s communications office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
