Ridiculing the Rahul Gandhi-led party, the prime minister said it is now like a regional party and cannot become a cementing force or anchor for any alliance of opposition parties against him.

PM says ‘hatred for Modi’ sole glue binding opposition New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the proposed grand opposition alliance is merely a “grand race” by his rivals to be the prime minister and is driven by “personal survival and power politics”. In an interview to Swarajya magazine, he said the opposition has no agenda except to remove him and that “hatred for Modi” is their “sole gluing force” as he expressed confidence that people will vote the BJP back to power in the next Lok Sabha elections. In a swipe at the Congress, he said the main opposition party is fighting a battle for its survival (“astitva ki ladai”) and is now running from pillar to post looking for allies after people rejected its “high-handedness”. CBI seeks Chidambaram’s custodial interrogation in INX Media corruption case

This government must go in national interest: Congress New Delhi : The Congress today hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his attack on the opposition, saying it was important that the government be removed in national interest and there was nothing wrong in likeminded parties getting together to achieve this task. Congress senior spokesperson Anand Sharma alleged that Modi had been working with malice since 2014 when he came to power and treated the opposition, especially the Congress, as his personal enemy. Sharma also attacked him over his claims on the country’s economy, alleging that the BJP’s “undemocratic rule has wrecked havoc on the Indian economy”, with the rupee falling to a new low and a decline in growth. “The prime minister should not complain that we want to remove him. It is not him, but his government that should be removed in national interest and we will work towards achieving it. The PM need not give us advice on this. Whatever responsibility he has been entrusted with, he has failed…,” he told reporters.

New Delhi : Hours after former union minister P Chidambaram was granted protection from any coercive action, the CBI today pressed for his custodial interrogation in the INX Media corruption case, alleging it was necessary as he has remained evasive and non-cooperative during questioning. The probe agency made the submission in an affidavit filed before Justice A K Pathak, who listed the matter for hearing on August 1 and extended till then the interim protection against arrest granted to Chidambaram on May 31. The CBI, represented by Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, said in its affidavit that despite there being “cogent and convincing material on record” based on which questions were put to the former union minister, he “chose to remain evasive and did not cooperate with the investigating agency”.

Andheri bridge collapse: Motorman averts major tragedy; Piyush Goyal announces Rs 5 lakh reward

Mumbai: In Mumbai’s suburban Andheri, a major tragedy was averted by an alert motorman who applied the brakes in good time, stopping his train a few meters away from the site where a portion of a road overbridge had collapsed on Tuesday morning. Chandrashekhar B Sawant was steering the Churchgate-bound train from Borivli and on nearing the Andheri station, he witnessed a part of the bridge falling which made him stop the train promptly. “I immediately applied emergency brakes when I saw the line snap. A major accident

was averted as it was peak hour and a lot of people were around,” said Sawant. At 7:30 am on Tuesday, part of the Gokhale bridge, built in 1971, had collapsed near the eastern side of the Andheri railway station, falling upon the rail tracks. Five people were injured in the incident, out of which two were critical. Sawant said that the collapse was accompanied by a big thud sound of the falling debris. Upon hearing the marvel of Sawant, Union Railways Miniter Piyush Goyal rewarded the motorman with Rs 5 lakh.

Congress-JD(S) alliance “stole the mandate” to form government with “development taking a back seat”. “In any election, a nonideological and opportunist coalition is the best guarantee for chaos,” he said, describing Karnataka as “a trailer of what is possibly in store”. You would expect ministers meeting each other to solve development issues but in Karnataka they meet only to quell infighting, he said. The BJP, he said, contests elections on the issues of development and good governance and the mandates it has received in state after state are historic. “Hence, we are confident that people will repose their trust in us. They (opposition) have no agenda except to remove Modi. Hatred for Modi is the sole glueing force for the opposition,” he said.

Amid series of lynchings, Govt asks WhatsApp to curb spreading of ‘irresponsible messages’

New Delhi : Amid a spate of lynching and mob beating incidents, fuelled by “fake” posts circulated on WhatsApp, the government Tuesday issued a clarion call to the Facebook-owned firm to take urgent steps to contain the spread of “irresponsible and explosive messages” through its platform. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITY) conveyed its deep disapproval to the top brass of WhatsApp and stated that WhatsApp “cannot evade accountability

and responsibility”, according to an official statement. Describing the “unfortunate killings” in states like Assam, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tripura and West Bengal as “deeply painful and regrettable”, the IT Ministry stated that the abuse of platforms like WhatsApp “for repeated circulation of such provocative content” is a matter of deep concern. “MEITY has taken serious note of these irresponsible messages and their circulation in such platforms.

Delhi mass killing: Diary reveals ‘dead father’ instructed family through son New Delhi: With no clear indication of what led to the death of the family of 11 members in Delhi’s Burari, investigators are now focusing on notes found in the house that point towards the youngest son in the family and his hallucinations and delusions of an impending apocalypse. On Sunday, 77-year-

Gujjars entitled to 21% reservation under OBC too: Rajasthan govt

Jaipur : The Rajasthan government has issued orders saying that five castes, including Gujjars, are entitled to receive 21 per cent reservations under the category of Other Backward Class (OBC), along with 1 per cent quota as Most Backward Class (MBC). The orders, dated July 1, were issued by the Rajasthan Department of Personnel (DoP) after representatives of the Gujjar community had threatened to stage protests during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Jaipur on July 7. The members of the Rajasthan Gurjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti held a meeting with the government on Sunday and

had given an ultimatum till Monday evening to fulfil their demands. In two of the fresh orders, the state government has said it has come to its notice that during admission in various educational institutions and recruitment in government departments, applicants were being given only the 1 per cent reservation under the MBC category. The five castes which are entitled to get 1 per cent reservation under MBC are Gurjar/Gujjar, Banjara/Baldia/ Labana, Gadia-Lohar/Gadalia, Raika/Rebari and Gadaria. The orders make it clear to all the departments and educational institutions that during admission or recruitments.

The 45-year-old had taken a vow of silence a few years ago but had recently started talking again, about “visits” from his father, Gopal Das Bhatia, who died 10 years ago. According to reports, the notes indicate

that at some point the family had tried to organise a “meeting” with Lalit’s father. “It appears that Lalit had been hallucinating that his father was giving instructions to the family through him,” The Times of India quoted an officer who studied the diaries, as saying.

The Trump doctrine is linked to Obama’s legacy

Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, known for his long and hypnotic essay on the foreign policy doctrine of former US president Barack Obama, recently tried to explain the Donald Trump doctrine. The Trump doctrine, Goldberg concludes, can be best summed up as: “We’re America, Bitch.” Drawing a distinction between Trump and Obama, Goldberg writes: “(Obama) was cerebral to a fault; the man who succeeded him is perhaps the most glandular president in American history. Unlike Obama, Trump possesses no ability to explain anything resembling a foreign-policy philosophy.” Despite this sharp contrast, there is a similarity between Trump and Obama. The process of American retrenchment from the world was initiated by Obama. It is being continued by Trump, albeit in a much more haphazard manner. In essence, the US is still recovering from the excesses committed during its unipolar moment. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the US was the sole superpower. The moment of hubris resulted in ill-advised interventions. Obama’s decision to withdraw was as much a part of his personal doctrine as it was a product of the times. Even if the Republican John McCain had been elected US president in 2008, some element of American retrenchment would still have played out. Trump’s style is more brusque. He cares little for what Washington’s liberal commentariat thinks. In his remarks, he has been less charitable to leaders of American allies than he has been to the presidents of Russia, China and, of late, North Korea. After the Singapore summit with Kim Jong-Un, Trump is set to meet Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. Trump had earlier set the cat among the pigeons by talking of expanding the G-7 (Group of Seven) to G-8 by inducting Russia. Nothing gets the goat of Washington’s liberal intelligentsia more than Trump’s words of praise for Russia and Putin. But it is not just words. Trump can now be credited for decisive actions—whether one likes those actions or not is another matter. He has pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Iran nuclear deal, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), and the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). In addition, he has threatened to pull the US out of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). After the Singapore summit with Kim, Trump announced a suspension of joint military exercises with South Korea. Trump’s words and actions have weakened the US’ security alliances in Asia and Europe. This is giving countries like China, Russia and North Korea a considerable degree of latitude to expand their influence in the region.

Garbine Muguruza opens title defence by toppling British wildcard

london: Champion Garbine Muguruza opened up traditional ‘ladies day’ on Wimbledon’s Centre Court with a 6-2 7-5 win over British wildcard Naomi Broady in the first round on Tuesday.Since the pair last contested a match seven years ago, Muguruza has gone on to become a two-time Grand Slam champion and the Spaniard produced an assured performance to dispatch the 138thranked Broady. Broady, who saved eight of the 11 break points she faced, survived a match point on her serve in the 10th game to the delight of the cheering fans but the third seed made no mistake two games later as she wrapped up the win. Muguruza will play either Belgium’s

Alison van Uytvanck or Slovenia’s Polona Hercog in the second round. British number one Johanna Konta made hard work of beating 103rdranked Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva 7-5 7-6(7) in her opening match at Wimbledon on Tuesday. Konta, a semi-finalist last year, lost control of a match she seemed to have in her pocket and was mightily relieved to escape a sticky Court Two with victory, having squandered five match points in the second-set tiebreak. With Andy Murray missing, Konta, seeded 22, and men’s 21st seed Kyle Edmund are shouldering the hopes of the home nation — a burden Konta seemed to be handling well for a set-and-a-half against tricky 21-year-old Vikhlyantseva.

Mumbai: Aaron Finch bettered his highest individual T20I score against Zimbabwe in the third T20 of the triseries in Harare. When Finch departed, rather bizarrely by being hit wicket, he had become the highest run scorer in T20I. His knock of 172 runs from 76 balls with 16 fours and 10 sixes was laden with boundaries and records on the way. It was rather fitting that Finch bettered his own record of 156 runs with a six by mauling Chris Mpofu over extra cover.During his knock and partnership with D Arcy Short for the opening wicket, they put together 223 runs for the highest partnership in T20I cricket. With his 172 runs, Finch also became

the highest scoring captain in the format. However, Finch missed out by 4 runs in becoming the highest run scorer in the shortest format. Currently, Chris Gayle holds the record for the highest score in T20s with the West Indian scoring 175 runs in the 2013 Indian Premier League. The previous biggest partnership in T20Is was shared between Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson against Pakistan in 2016 as they accumulated 171 runs. Zimbabwe had won the toss and put Australia in to bat with Finch in explosive form right from the word go. The right hander scored 50 runs from 22 balls before bringing up his second T20I hundred in 50 balls.“Feels good.

Mumbai: Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has ruled out any exemption from toll collection at the national highways, saying people should pay if they want good services. The minister said toll collection can “never go” if funds are to be raised for constructing roads under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model. “The toll (collection) will never go. The toll will be there. If you want good services, you will have to pay for it,” Gadkari said

at a function of the PTI employees unions here last night. Expressing concern over the rising instances of road accidents, he said his ministry is working towards ensuring safe travel on the highways. As many as 1.46 lakh people had lost their lives in 4.60 lakh road accidents across the country in 2017, he said. The demand for toll waiver has been a long-standing one with NGOs and Opposition parties like the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena pushing the case.

Setback for Gujarat Congress as senior leader Bavaliya resigns as MLA, set to join BJP Rajkot : Ending weeks of speculation, disgruntled Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) working president Kunvarji Bavaliya Tuesday resigned as MLA and was set to join the BJP. Resignation of Bavaliya, an MLA from Jasdan c o n s t i t u e n c y, comes ahead of Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Gujarat in the second week of this month. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel confirmed Bavaliya’s resignation to the media. He said that Bavaliya would soon join the BJP and that he may also get a berth in the cabinet. Bavaliya drove to the official residence of Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi in Gandhinagar and submitted his resignation. The Speaker told media

persons that he had accepted and approved Bavliya’s resignation. Later, Bavaliya drove to Kamalam, the state BJP headquarters on the outskirts of Ahmedabad where

he was welcomed by Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama and others. Bavaliya could not be reached for immediate comment. His resignation culminates weeks of speculation that he was unhappy with the Congress’ treatment towards him since the Assembly election in December last year when he was elected from Jasdan constituency for the fifth time.

PM Modi did ‘lethal surgical strike’ by not providing jobs, implementing GST: Jignesh

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has executed a “lethal surgical strike” on 125 crore Indians by not providing jobs and implementing the note ban and the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has said. His comments came days after TV channels aired footage of the September 2016 surgical strikes by the Indian Army on terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC). Demonetisation and implementation of the GST were bigger “surgical strikes” than what was carried out by the Army in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, he alleged. “Modiji did a more lethal surgical strike on the people of this country by imposing GST and demonetisation. He had promised to double farmers’ income. By not doing so, he did a surgical strike on farmers,” he said. The MLA from Vadgam seat in Gujarat was speaking to reporters at Palanpur town in Banaskantha district yesterday. “Modiji had promised to give jobs to two crore people. By not providing those jobs, he did surgical strike on youths. He also did it on the media by not ensuring the implementation of the Majithia Commission’s recommendations,” the Dalit leader claimed.

Ahmedabad : Former Gujarat Congress MLA Bholabhai Gohel, who had joined the ruling BJP after the Rajya Sabha polls in August last year, rejoined the main opposition party on Gohel was re-inducted into the party by Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda and Leader of Opposition in the assembly Paresh Dhanani at a function held at state party headquarter here. He represented the Jasdan seat in Rajkot district in the assembly from 2012 to 2017. Incidentally, Gohel switched sides just hours after sitting Congress MLA from Jasdan, Kunvarji Bavaliya, quit the party

and also the assembly seat, and joined the BJP. Commenting on Gohel’s return to the Congress, Chavda said many other BJP leaders would walk on the same path ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. “Gohel had not accepted any major responsibility in the BJP after joining the party (a year back). He re-joined the Congress as he wanted to come back to the party fold,” Chavda told reporters. As Bavaliya has resigned as the MLA and set to become a minister in the BJP government, it is believed Gohel would be fielded by the Congress against Bavaliya in the bypoll for the Jasdan seat.

Cow urine can cure cancer: Gujarat team

J U N A G A D H : Biotechnology scientists at Junagadh Agriculture University in Gujarat have succeeded in their first attempt to kill cancer cells using cow urine. They claim that cow urine can cure most types of common cancers such as those of mouth, cervix, lungs, kidney, skin and breast. The research team that included assistant professors Shraddha Bhatt and Rukamsinh Tomar and research fellow Kavita Joshi achieved the results after a year

of experiments. “This research was very risky because we directly experimented on cancer cells procured in a bottle. We found the exact quantity of cow urine required to kill particular number of cancer cells in a day,” Bhatt said. “The next step is to experiment it on a rat. Once this is successful, we will create oral pills for different type of cancers.” “Chemotherapy kills healthy cells too while cow urine only kills infected cells,” Tomar said.

Quetta : Pakistani police say a bomb detonated by remote control killed three workers doing a survey for a local oil exploration company in the country’s southwest. Local police official Mohammad Hussain says Tuesday’s bombing near the town of Dera Bugti in the Baluchistan province also wounded five surveyors. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but small nationalist groups and separatists have claimed previous such attacks in the province. Islamic militants also have a strong presence in Baluchistan. The latest violence came a day after assailants ambushed a convoy of paramilitary troops, killing six of them in the Awaran district of Baluchistan. No group has claimed that attack either. Baluch separatists have staged attacks for years, demanding a larger share of provincial resources and wealth or complete autonomy from Islamabad.

Days from Brexit crunch meeting, Britain’s Theresa May calls for unity

London : Prime Minister Theresa May has called on her Conservative party to “stand together” over Brexit, days before a crunch meeting she hopes will overcome bitter rifts over how Britain should leave the European Union. Britain’s exit from the bloc will mark its biggest trading and foreign policy shift in almost half a century. But May has struggled to unite her cabinet and party — or parliament and the public — around a plan, often reluctant to spell out her approach for fear of angering one faction or another. With the clock ticking towards a March departure date and passions running high, May needs to thrash out a deal with her ministers on a future customs arrangement with the EU. The meeting at her country residence, Chequers, on Friday is expected to run well into the evening It is unclear what May will present to her cabinet, but those wanting a “clean break” with the EU fear she will try to force them into a compromise on customs that will keep Britain firmly in the bloc’s sphere, as desired by some companies and several members of her cabinet.
