Hyderabad : Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday targeted the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and All India Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) , accusing them of being handin-glove with the BJP. “TRS is the ‘B’ team of BJP. Vote BJP to see Hyderabad transform into ‘Bhagyanagar’: Yogi Adityanath

New Delhi : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged voters in Telangana to elect the BJP to power in the coming assembly elections in state if they want to see Hyderabad transform into ‘Bhagyanagar’. Addressing an election rally in Goshamahal constituency here in support of BJP candidate T Raja Singh Lodh, Adityanath said he has specially come to campaign for him as he (Singh) was working towards renaming Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar. BJP through the foundation of good governance and development has taken the responsibility of building India

on the ‘Ram Rajya’ model and in that mission Telangana should also play a role, he said. “If Hyderabad has to be transformed into ‘Bhagyanagar’ then I call upon you to support BJP to form government (in Telangana)”, Adtiyanatha, whose government last month approved the renaming of Faizabad as Ayodhya and Allahabad as Prayagraj, told the public meeting late Sunday evening. Raja Singh had on several occasions earlier said BJP would aim to rename Hyderabad and other cities in the state after the names of great people if it was elected to power.

American tourist’s killing in Andaman not a failure of coastal security: Navy chief

This is my father’s country, no one can remove me: Owaisi to Yogi Adityanath

Hyderabad : Hitting back at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s “Nizam” barb at him, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has said India is his father’s country and no one can remove him from here. Addressing a poll rally Sunday night, he also said Adityanath was speaking the language of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that he was ignorant about history. He was reacting to Adityanath’s comments at a rally, in which he said that if the BJP came to power in Telangana, Owaisi would have to “run away” from Hyderabad, just like the Nizam. “The first thing, you (Adityanath) are zero in history…Had you read (history), you would have known that the Nizam did not leave Hyderabad and Mir Osman Ali Khan was made the ‘Raj Pramukh’ and when there was a war with China, the same Nizam had given his gold…he did not run away,” the Hyderabad MP said. He added that if Adityanath was willing, he could come with him to the Nizam’s grave and offer flowers. “But will you come?…You may ask to change the name of the grave also,” Owaisi said, taking a dig at the renaming of several places in Uttar Pradesh by the Adityanath-led government.

Congress has no leader, policy or principles: Amit Shah

J&J case is a step in the right direction, finally

Decades ago, on the intervening night of 2-3 December 1984, a highly toxic chemical made its way into and around the small towns located near the Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal exposing more than 500,000 people to the deadly methyl isocyanate (MIC). In 1989, the Supreme Court ordered UCIL to cough up ₹750 crore for the tragedy touted as the “world’s worst industrial disaster”. That sum was to be distributed among the 105,000 people affected by the leakage of MIC gas, including 3,000 dead and 102,000 injured. While the survivors and relatives of those killed are still engaged in a legal fight for an enhanced payout, there is no disputing that in India, compensation for death or disability arising from the fault of others is paltry. Consider the fact that road accident victims in the case of death or permanent disability get a maximum of ₹5 lakh. This is after the government increased the minimum payout 10-fold after 24 years. “So human life does not seem to have great value,” a Supreme Court bench of justices Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta said in January while hearing a case were 17 people had died in a fire that broke out at an illegal firecracker packaging unit. That sentiment has been expressed several times over earlier. Indians have always felt powerless, doubting if progress will ever be made. Life in India is obviously much cheaper than in developed nations. On Thursday, though, things changed. India made a big stride on compensation, a critical appraisal in terms of various aspects of human life. The government announced that the patients fitted with faulty hip implants supplied by pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson Pvt. Ltd (J&J) be compensated between 30 lakh and 1.23 crore, along with an additional 10 lakh paid towards non-pecuniary damages. This is by far the highest ever compensation announced for a living human being in India. It has not been an easy journey for the patients, though. It took eight long years for the patients to get what they wished for. The Acetabular Surface Replacement (ASR) hip implants were recalled globally in August 2010. The government swung into action in 2017 and formed a committee to look into the matter in 2017 under the chairmanship of former dean of Maulana Azad Medical College, Arun Agarwal. However, it was only in August 2018 after the media took over the case that the government took a stern stance, providing a big relief to the patients.

Chris Gayle wins USD 300,000 in defamation settlement

Justice McCallum awarded Chris Gayle a single sum for a series of articles published in January, 2016. Sydney : West Indies cricket star Chris Gayle has been awarded $300,000 in damages, three months after a jury found he was defamed in Australian newspaper articles which claimed he had exposed himself indecently to a female masseur. Justice Lucy McCallum levied the damages Monday in a long-awaited ruling after a four-person jury in the New South Wales state High Court found in October, 2017 that Fairfax had not established Gayle had exposed himself in a team dressing room during a Sydney training session at the 2015 World Cup.The jury also found Fairfax was motivated

by malice, rejecting the media group’s defense of qualified privilege, which argues the organization acted reasonably by publishing information which is in the public interest. Fairfax Media said Monday it will “immediately” appeal the decision. Justice McCallum awarded Gayle a single sum for a series of articles published in January, 2016 in the Sydney Morning Herald, Canberra Times and Melbourne Age. Aggravated damages were not awarded and the figure was at the lower end of recent defamation payouts.

Espionage, ID theft? Myriad risks from stolen Marriott data

New York : The data stolen from the Marriott hotel empire in a massive breach is so rich and specific it could be used for espionage, identity theft, reputational attacks and even home burglaries, security experts say. Hackers stole data on as many as 500 million guests of former Starwood chain properties over four years including credit card and passport numbers, birthdates, phone numbers and hotel arrival and departure dates. It is one of the biggest data breaches on record. By comparison, last year’s Equifax hack affected more than 145 million

people. A Target breach in 2013 affected more than 41 million payment card accounts and exposed contact information for more than 60 million customers. But the target here — hotels where high-stakes business deals, romantic trysts and espionage are daily currency — makes the data gathered especially sensitive. The affected reservation system could be extremely enticing to nation-state spies interested in the travels of military and senior government officials, said Jesse Varsalone, a University of Maryland cybersecurity expert.

India vs Australia: Ricky Ponting, under whom Australia dominated world cricket, said it would be “rubbish” if the current side doesn’t play with an aggressive mindset.

Virat Kohli can still be rattled, don’t let him be a bully, says Ricky Ponting

Adelaide : Virat Kohli can be “rattled” and Australia should try to get under his skin rather than sitting back and be bullied by the Indian captain, said former skipper Ricky Ponting. India will take on Australia in the four-Test series beginning here Thursday and former Australia batsman Dean Jones has advised against provoking Kohli. The India skipper has mellowed down since the previous tour Down Under but when asked if he will be baiting Australia on the field, Ponting said: “Well, he might. I don’t necessarily believe that he is someone you shouldn’t try to get under his skin. I have seen him rattled.“Mitchell Johnson definitely rattled him a few times with some good hostile bowling and some good hostile body language around him. So, I would not sit back and let anyone bully,” Ponting told Cricket Australia website. “The way we go

about playing cricket, especially at home, it is about good strong body language. That is the way Australians have always played their best.” Ponting, under whom Australia dominated world cricket, said it would be “rubbish” if the current side doesn’t play with an aggressive

mindset. “Yes, Australian teams of the past have always had few words to say but it was always on the back of some good hostile bowling, you can’t do without it. It is rubbish otherwise. You have to able to impose yourself on the game in a way other than using your mouth.

New ‘chemputer’ system may revolutionise drug production

London : Scientists have developed a new method to produce drug molecules, which they say uses downloadable blueprints to easily and reliably synthesise organic chemicals via a programmable ‘chemputer’. Researchers from the University of Glasgow in the UK said the method could democratise the pharmaceutical industry. Published in the journal Science, the research shows for the first time how synthesis of important drug molecules can be achieved in an affordable and modular chemical-robot system they call a chemputer. While recent advances in chemical production have allowed some chemical compounds to be produced at laboratory scale via automated systems, the chemputer is underpinned by a new universal and interoperable standard for writing and sharing chemical recipes. The key was to develop a general abstraction for chemistry that can be made universal, practical, and driven by a computer programme, researchers said.

PTI that Harmanpreet and Smriti have backed Powar to continue as coach till 2021. Powar’s interim tenure ended on November 30 and the BCCI has already invited fresh applications for the job. Powar’s term ended a week after India lost the semifinals of the World T20 to England. The team management dropped Mithali for the knock-out fixture, triggering a huge controversy.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ could feature two cameras at the front, and a larger display hole than previously rumoured.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ to feature two front cameras within infinity-o display: Report New Delhi : Samsung Galaxy S10+ could have a unique display hole, as it would have two front cameras, according to a PhoneArena report. This was initially claimed by tipster IceUniverse, who shared a post on the screens that would be seen on the Galaxy S10 series. The latest tweet from IceUniverse claims that the Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ will come with “Hole in Super AMOLED screens”. In addition, they also add that the dual front

camera configuration on Galaxy S10+ would make the in-display hole design “slightly different”. From the rumours, it is believed that the phone’s front camera configuration would consist of a primary camera and a wideangle lens. This, of course, will make Galaxy S10+’s display hole different from phones having a single front camera. the same. Recently, Samsung Galaxy S10+ was spotted on AnTuTu, with separate listings for the Snapdragon 855/8150 and Exynos 9820 variants. Ahmedabad : The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned till January third week Zakia Jafri’s petition challenging the acquittal of Narendra Modi, then chief minister of Gujarat, and several others in the 2002 Godhra riots case. Zakia Jafri is the widow of slain Congress leader Ehsan Jafri who was killed by a mob which attacked the Gulberg Society in Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002. Earlier, the hearing was deferred by a week on November 19. Zakia Jafri has challenged an October 5, 2017 judgment of the Gujarat High Court which

upheld the clean chit given to several politicians and senior bureaucrats by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in its closure report, citing lack of “prosecutable evidence” against them. The petition further says the High Court refused to interfere with the Magistrate’s order “despite large amount of documentation and contemporaneous evidence that existed which made out

a triable case against all the accused”. At the outset, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appearing for the SIT, said Zakia’s plea was not maintainable and that “it is an issue of facts and for how long it can go on.” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court there were concurrent findings of the subordinate court and the High Court as well rejecting the plea of petitioner Zakia.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit: US to stay away until trade issues resolved, says Consul General

Vadodara : United States Consul General Edgard D Kagan said Monday his country would not take part in the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, scheduled next month, till the unresolved trade issues between the two countries are settled. Speaking to mediapersons in Vadodara, Kagan said, “From our standpoint in terms of focusing our resources, one of our critical resources, which is primarily our senior officials, we feel it is very difficult to put people away to take

part in something like Vibrant Gujarat (Summit) when we have all these unresolved (trade) issues. We are clear with the Government of Gujarat as well as the Centre (Government of India) that while in principle we recognise that there is value inside Vibrant Gujarat (Summit) for us, it is important to have ultimate progress in the outstanding trade issues before we redirect our focus to be able to think about how we would participate in Vibrant Gujarat (Summit).

AHMEDABAD: Four people, including two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and a sub-inspector, were arrested on Monday in connection with the police constable recruitment exam paper leak, an official said. Sohrabuddin, Prajapati encounter cases: Court questions CBI claims, points to ‘gaps’

AHMEDABAD: THE SPECIAL court hearing the Sohrabuddin Shaikh and Tulsiram Prajapati alleged fake encounter cases in Mumbai on Monday questioned several claims made by the CBI and pointed out the lacunae in the evidence it has presented, while hearing final arguments by the prosecution. In less than two hours, Special Public Prosecutor B P Raju concluded his submissions against the 22 accused facing trial, summarising the evidence given by 210 prosecution witnesses, 92 of which have turned hostile. Raju claimed that both the encounters — Sohrabuddin’s and Tulsiram’s — were fake. He further claimed that for a year till his death, Tulsiram kept expressing

his apprehensions about being killed since he had witnessed the abduction of Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausarbi. Special Judge S J Sharma, however,

asked the CBI if it had evidence to show that the third person traveling with the couple was Tulsiram. “Why was this fact about Tulsiram being in the

bus not disclosed till CBI took charge of the case in 2010? Have you investigated on the lines that Tulsiram had stayed with the couple at the house of their associate Kalimuddin in Hyderabad in November 2005? His photo was not shown to the witnesses for identification,” the judge asked the prosecutor. The judge also said that while a letter was written to the Supreme Court by Rubabuddin seeking to inquire into his brother Sohrabuddin’s death, it was mentioned nowhere till 2010 that the third person in the bus was Tulsiram. During his deposition in September, Sohrabuddin’s other brother, Nayamuddin, had claimed that Tulsiram was planted in the abduction story by the CBI.

Indian-American Kamala Harris to decide on 2020 US presidential bid over holidays Colombo : Indian-American Kamala Harris, the first from the community to be elected to the US Senate, has said that she will decide whether to run for president in 2020 during the upcoming holiday season. In an interview to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program, the 54-year-old democratic senator said the choice would be a family decision. “It will ultimately be a family decision,” the California lawmaker told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski on Saturday during an event in San Francisco. “And over the holiday I will make that decision with my family,” she added. According to a survey conducted by Politico News, Harris ranked fifth in a November

poll of Democratic voters’ preferred nominee to take on President Donald Trump’s reelection bid. Among others in the race for the presidency are former US Vice President Joe Biden, Independent senator Bernie Sanders, Beto O’Rourke, Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker. Around 26 per cent voters in the poll say Biden is their first choice to be the Democratic nominee. Harris, meanwhile, secured 4 per cent votes. Harris, whose mother was from Chennai and father from Jamaica, won the US Senate Seat from California in a landslide election on November 8, becoming the first black and Asian Senator from the state.

Washington : Former FBI Director James Comey has reached a deal to testify privately to the House Judiciary Committee, backing off his legal fight for an open hearing, his attorney said Sunday. Comey, whose lawyers went to court to challenge a congressional subpoena, said in a tweet that it was “hard to protect my rights without being in contempt.” As part of a deal with legislators, Comey has been told that he is free to speak about the questioning afterward and that a transcript would be released 24 hours after he testifies, his attorney, David Kelley, said. Comey’s lawyers told a federal judge on Friday that the interview should be done in a public setting because they fear that statements from a closed-door interview would be selectively leaked. A lawyer for Congress, however, argued that committees can conduct investigations however they please and Comey had no right to refuse a subpoena or demand a public hearing.

Sri Lankan court bars Rajapaksa from acting as Prime Minister

Colombo : A Sri Lankan court Monday barred Mahinda Rajapaksa from acting as Prime Minister, in a major setback to President Maithripala Sirisena who had installed his former rival in place of Ranil Wickremesinghe in a controversial decision that triggered a constitutional crisis in the island nation. The Court of Appeal temporary halted Rajapaksa and his Cabinet from functioning in their positions in response to a case filed by 122 legislators against the disputed government. The court set the hearing of the case for December 12 and 13. “According to the interim relief, Rajapaksa and his disputed government have been prevented from acting as PM, cabinet and deputy ministers,” said a

lawyer, who was present at the hearing. He added that the court was of the opinion that “irreparable damage” could be caused if persons not entitled to do so sit as prime minister and cabinet ministers. As many as 122 parliamentarians of Wickeremesinghe’s United National Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Tamil National Alliance last month filed a petition in the Court of Appeal challenging Rajapaksa’s authority as the prime minister. The interim ruling was a major blow to both President Sirisena and Rajapaksa after the former had appointed the latter as the prime minister on October 26, plunging the country into constitutional crisis.
