Short News Kerala CM says N Korea successfully ‘defended against US pressure’

Kozhikode: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sparked a fresh controversy after he praised North Korea for “successfully defending the pressure imposed by the United States”. “North Korea has been following tough anti-USA agenda. It has successfully defended the pressure imposed by US,” Vijayan said while addressing a CPM Kozhikode district committee meeting on Tuesday. He even went on to say that North Korea fared better than China. “China’s fight against imperialist forces is not living up to the expectations of the people,” Vijayan was quoted as saying by India Today. The statement comes as a shocker from the chief minister of the southern state when no other leaders have spoken on the issue.

What if India has a PM from TN or WB: Tharoor to Sushma on Hindi in UN New Delhi: India is ready to bear all expenses, if necessary up to Rs 400 crore, to make Hindi one of the official languages of the United Nations, but its rules for acquiring such a status prevents the country from doing so, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said in Parliament on Wednesday. According to the UN rules, support of two-third member countries (129 nations) is required out of the total 193 member nations, Swaraj said in the Lok Sabha during Question Hour. Besides, all member nations will have to bear the cost of making Hindi one of the official languages of the UN. “It is not difficult to get the support of two-third member nations. But when the issue of bearing the expenses comes, many small nations become hesitant which has led to a big hurdle in making Hindi an official languages of the UN,” Swaraj was quoted as saying in the Lok Sabha, adding that despite this, the efforts are on.

Aadhaar breach: UIDAI denies reports of cheaply available biometric details Mumbai: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) denied media report saying that Aadhaar cards can be bought on WhatsApp for nominal charges. Denying media reports UIDAI said: “Rs 500, 10 minutes, and you have access to billion Aadhaar details” is a case of misreporting. UIDAI assures that there has not been any Aadhaar data breach and that the data is fully safe and secure. An investigation report in The Tribune revealed Thursday that anonymous sellers on Whatsapp are offering Aadhaar details of more than a billion Indians in exchange of a meagre sum of Rs 500. The paper reported the existence of a software, available in the market for only Rs 300, which can print the Aadhaar card of any individual by entering their Aadhaar number. The report suggested the racket could have been started by over 300,000 Village Level Operators (VLEs) who were earlier in-charge of making Aadhaar cards pan-India and were rendered jobless when post offices and banks replaced them. Over 100,000 VLEs may have spotted this as an opportunity to make easy money, gaining illegal access to UIDAI data and provided common people with Aadhar cards for a charge, including printing the cards.

Pak continues putting out coerced statements: MEA on Jadhav’s video

GNS, New Delhi: Shortly after a video of Kulbhushan Jadhav was released by Pakistan on Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs dismissed it saying “such propagandistic exercises simply carry no credibility”. Jadhav claimed that Indian Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh allegedly threatened his mother and wife during their visit to Islamabad on December 25, 2017. “I saw fear in her (mother’s) eyes, the Indian diplomat was shouting at my mother the moment she stepped out. I saw him shouting, yelling at her. This (meeting) was

a positive gesture, so that she (my mother) could be happy and I could be happy,” Jadhav said. MEA further said, “The absurdity of a captive under duress certifying his own welfare while mouthing allegations of his captors clearly merits no comment.” The External Affairs Ministry said “Pakistan is best advised to fulfil its international obligations, whether it pertains to consular relations or UNSC resolutions 1267 and 1373 on terrorism and to desist from continuing violations of human rights of an Indian national.”

US attacked Afghanistan 57,800 times from our base: Pak foreign minister

New Delhi: Days after US president Donald Trump accused Pakistan of “lies and deceit”, foreign minister of Pakistan Khawaja Asif responded to Trump in a series of tweets and said: “You ask what we’ve done?... From our bases you carried out 57,800 attacks on Afghanistan...thousands of our civilians and soldiers became victims of the war initiated by you.” Khawaja Asif repeatedly talked of Pakistanis’ sacrifices. And directly in response to Trump’s words, said his own

version of the US President’s “No more!” “Our forces are fighting an unusual war, there is an unending saga of sacrifices. Now, history teaches us not to

blindly trust the US. We are feeling sorry they are not happy, but we will not compromise on our dignity anymore,” Pakistan foreign minister said. Asif began

his series of tweets by attacking Pakistan’s former-president Pervez Musharraf, who was in charge when the 9/11 terror attacks occurred in New York. “A ruler surrendered in a single phone call, our country, we went through the worst bloodbath,” said Asif, about the military dictator Musharraf. Asif implied that if anyone was a fool it was Pakistan for getting involved in US’s war. He was talking about Trump’s first tweet of 2018 where the US president said that Islamabad takes Americans for fools.

Kerala’s New Year guest: A female humpback whale, all the way from Oman GNS, Kochi : On November 12 last year, when Luban, a female humpback whale, began migrating eastwards in the Indian Ocean leaving her shoal far behind in the Gulf of Oman, it took scientists by surprise. She had not been known to do that. By December 31, it was clear that Luban had decided to welcome the new year off the coast of Kochi in Kerala, having swam over 1500 kilometres across the Arabian Sea. Proving past genetic studies wrong, Luban achieved a rare feat by making the first recorded trans-oceanic crossing by an Arabian humpback whale. Though humpback whales, over the world, are known to migrate between polar and tropical regions, the ones found in the Arabian Sea, numbering around 100, don’t stray far, making them the most isolated whale population on earth, according to scientists. According to a 2014 research study, Arabian humpback whales may even have stayed separate from other humpback species for nearly 70,000 years. But Luban’s landmark journey has changed all that.

in July last year. Now Netanyahu is going to gift the same jeep to Modi, informed sources said. As Netanyahu prepares for his four day visit to India, sources confirmed that the jeep has “indeed” left for India and “would be arriving on time” to be presented by the Israeli Prime Minister to Modi. The jeep is said to cost around 390,000 shekels (approximately USD 111,000).

Vijay Mallya declared proclaimed offender by Delhi court in FERA case

GNS, New Delhi : A Delhi court on Thursday declared beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya a proclaimed offender for evading summons in a FERA violation case. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Shehrawat passed the order after noting that Mallya failed to appear before it despite repeated summonses. “In view that Vijay Mallya failed to appear before this court within 30 days, and no representation was made on his behalf, he is declared as a proclaimed offender,” the court said. The court had on April 12 last year issued an open-ended non-bailable warrant against the liquor baron. Unlike a non-bailable warrant, ‘open-ended NBW’ does not carry a time limit for execution. On November 4, 2016, while issuing a non-bailable warrant against Mallya, the court had observed he had no inclination to return and had scant regard for the law of the land. It had said that coercive process has to be initiated against Mallya as he was facing proceedings in several cases and avoiding appearance in those matters. The court had also held that Mallya’s plea that he wanted to return to India but was “incapacitated” to travel as his passport had been revoked by Indian authorities, was “malafide” and “abuse of the process of law”.

Raja writes to Manmohan Singh: Understand the compulsions that prevented you from supporting me in 2G case

“You will recall that I assured you several times that I had done nothing wrong but rather acted in the national interest and I would prove this,” A Raja wrote to former PM Manmohan Singh

GNS, New Delhi : Replying to a letter from former telecom minister A Raja who was acquitted in the 2G spectrum allocation case, former prime minister Manmohan Singh said he was happy that Raja was vindicated in the case. Following his acquittal in the case, Raja had written to Singh, recalling his past assurances that he had done nothing wrong and acted in the national interest, but the former PM did not back him. “I also understand the compulsions that prevented you from openly supporting me,” Raja said. The letter written on December 26, 2017, stated that a few powerful people launched a propaganda

machinery against the then UPA government and mislead the Parliament and the judiciary in the 2G case. “It cost you the UPA government and seven years of my life, including 15 months in jail,” the former telecom minister said. Recalling his stand in the matter that he did no wrong in allocating UAS and 2G licences, Raja said he understood the compulsions that prevented the former PM from openly supporting him at that time. “You will recall that I assured you several times that I had done nothing wrong but rather acted in the national interest and I would prove this,” the letter stated.

Rajini’s political avatar

If I say once, it is akin to saying a hundred times”, is one of his famous “punch” dialogues in Tamil films. Now, Thalaivar has spoken, “My entry into politics is certain.” To his legion of fans, waiting an eternity for this, it’s a New Year gift. But would it be a bonanza for the state? Would this tectonic buzz lead to a paradigm shift in the polity in Tamil Nadu and impact the nation too? In 1996, in the backdrop of the repulsive wedding celebrations of the adopted son of the Iron Lady, the protagonists led by Cho Ramaswamy, a “friend, philosopher, guide” were convinced that voters had made up their mind and if the erstwhile conductor deigned, he could go on to capture the public vote and conduct the affairs of the state, but he missed the bus. Now, Rajini says, “I miss Cho”. Based on this construct, the naysayers are going to town that Rajini has bitten the bullet after his teeth have been pulled out and that he is daydreaming he can carry his legion of fans as voters to the booth. His fans may cut across sex, religion, caste, creed and region but will they find a stimulant in the sounding of the beagle? The year 2018 may not be 1973 (Dindigul, MGR) and 1983 (Andhra Pradesh, NTR). But the core theme of why the ordinary voter seeks change in the political climate has remained immanent. The citizens at the hustings are simple folks with good in their heart. They expect the same of their leaders. They have seen Rajini in real life — the bald, unkempt persona — caring ever so little for his image. How a person conducts himself in public is a huge plus, and they may see it that way.Whenever Rajini has spoken on public issues, he has delivered his lines with a nationalistic perspective, and never parochial or regional. He is far too famous to seek more fame. But his ideology has not yet been defined to fit the label of left, right or centre. That too matters little for none of the political adventurists of today have boasted of an ideological thrust. Pragmatism and humanism could be the catchwords for his march to power, not ideology. It is all very well to suggest he is not an intellectual and we do not know where his allegiances lie on sensitive social issues. But it is not as if the present lot are so brilliant that we are stuck with a profusion of choices. It is no empty rhetoric in Tamil Nadu and, as Cho put it, “often, the choice is between a pickpocket and a dacoit”. Rajini is neither and his spiritual inclinations, publicly known, would suffice to support his candidature and party. The present lot has miserably failed us. Last year, as Rajini said, captured the rot in all its hues. This may be a great place to start. No matter what political or economic ideologies he is imbued with or may pursue, just the pursuit of “goodness” would suffice for the expectations of the people. Therein may lie the seeds of success of Maaveran (superhero) to become the true Thalaivar that Tamil Nadu has been longing for.

Rana Daggubati sheds 15 Kg for his upcoming film Haathi Mere Saathi

Mumbai: Baahubali star Rana Daggubati will be back on screen playing an interesting character in ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’. The actor revealed the first look of his movie on the first day of New Year. He took fans by surprise with his different look. Daggubati shed almost 15 kg over three months for the role. “After finishing Baahubali, I was aware that I’d have to lose weight to play any character. So, I started the process slowly. To get in shape for Haathi Mere Saathi, I didn’t eat non-veg for almost six weeks. I stopped weight training and did simple cardio exercises to shed the muscle,” the actor mentioned. While speaking to Mid-Day, Daggubati’s trainer, Kunal Gir, said,”During Baahubali, his physique fluctuated for four years. He had to follow a strict diet, eliminate carbs and consume only proteins. But, this time, it was the other way around. He was off protein and did light cardio exercises. He has lost almost 15 kg. Rana likes to eat every two hours, but we reduced his food intake and followed the three-meals-a-day routine.”

Why should there be problems? Radhika Apte loses her cool over catfight queries Radhika Apte is a complete nononsense actress. Any question that rubs her the wrong way will invite her wrath. Earlier too, questions on catfights have peeved the actress, and on being quizzed about it again, Radhika lost her cool. At a recent media interaction, when she was asked if there were any catfight stories between her and her Padman co-star Sonam Kapoor, Radhika was miffed. “We don’t have too many scenes together, but I really like her spirit. She is a lovely, wonderful actress, and a wonderful girl,” Radhika shot back. “And why should there be problems?” Meanwhile, Padman’s trailer and song have already amplified audience expectation from the movie, and Radhika assures it’ll be an absolute entertainer. “I wish the film is a big success, and it will be because it’s a great topic,” Radhilka smiles. “It’s made with a lot of dedication and thought.” Prod her further, and she adds, “It’s a subject that needs to reach as many people as possible. That’s the effort from our side — to spread awareness and also entertain.” The film is inspired by the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who found a way to make affordable sanitary napkins for women in his village. Padman will release on Republic Day.

Chrissy Teigen’s tiff with a youtube star Chrissy Teigen and YouTube star iJustine got into a Twitter feud on Tuesday over the controversy with the Logan Paul “suicide forest” video, but worked it out at the end. Justine called out one of Chrissy’s tweets, which she thought defended Logan’s actions in the video. The tweet was then deleted. JustJared.com reports that Chrissy, who has been private on Twitter for quite some time so that haters who aren’t fans cannot see her tweets, had to turn off her privacy wall after Justine’s fans started to attack her. This is because they weren’t able to see the rest of the tweets, which added more context to the tweet in question.

Meet Akshay Kumar’s Hu Ba HuSonamKapoor in the latest song of PadMan

Rose McGowan’s docuseries is being made in the wake of sexual harassment in Hollywood and will be titled, Citizen Rose.

Rose McGowan to get her own docu-series, Citizen Rose

One of the strongest voices in the #MeToo campaign, Rose McGowan will soon be seen on the small screen in a series based on her life. According to E! Online, the five-part series will be called Citizen Rose and will help to “amplify” Rose’s messages of ”bravery, art, joy and survival” in the wake of the sexual misconduct allegations made against the likes of Harvey Weinstein and other powerful Hollywood men. In a statement, Rose said, “You are formally invited into my mind and world. I am thrilled to partner with E! to amplify my message of bravery, art, joy and survival. As I ready my book, Brave, I realised I wanted to show how we can heal through art even when being hounded by evil. I want to have a conversation with everyone, and most especially, you, about looking at things differently and seeing beauty everywhere. E!’s tremendous reach and impressive platform allow me to globally communicate the importance of living a brave life”.

The third song of Akshay Kumar starrer PadMan is out. Titled “Hu Ba Hu”, the song is about Akshay aka Lakshmikanth finding a friend in the second lead of the film Sonam Kapoor on his journey of promoting menstrual hygiene in his village. The lyrics of the song goes, “Jab ek ho raahein aur ek hi manzil, mil hi jaate hain safar mein aise log jo hote hain Hu Ba Hu (When people with similar goals meet, they end up having similar character traits).” Sung and composed by Amit Trivedi, the peppy number looks well integrated into the story with the lyrics of Kausar Munir. As the song plays, we are introduced to several similarities between the characters of Akshay and Sonam. The R. Balki directorial has Sonam playing a teacher named Rhea, who teaches the innocent village man Lakshmikanth (Akshay) to talk in English. From the visuals of the song, it seems, the teacher-student duo who have a ‘hu ba hu’ heart are attracted to each other while making women understand the importance of sanitary napkins. Now, is this attraction mere admiration or have they fallen in love with the simplicity and innocence of the other, will be known only on January 26, when the film hits the screen.

GNS, RAJKOT: A young man allegedly killed his sick mother in Rajkot by throwing her off the terrace of a building. Police have arrested the accused, who is a professor, in the alleged murder case three months after the death. Police had earlier registered a suicide case but an anonymous letter and CCTV footage of the building helped them to establish that it was murder and not suicide. As believed earlier, Jayshreeben Vinodbhai Nathvani, died on September 27 by jumping off the terrace of her own building - Darshan Avenue in Gandhigram area - and died on the spot. Police registered a suicide case and closed the file. Later, police got an anonymous letter suspecting this to be a case of murder and not suicide.
