Senior advocate Vikas Singh, who argued the case for EC, told a bench led by justice AK Sikri that the party was trying to “mislead” the top court. “Congress petitioners must be punished for fabricating the voters’ list,” the lawyer said.

When a woman points a finger at the powerful man

Of all the questions people have raised over the allegations made against powerful men by actor Tanushree Dutta in India against her co-star Nana Patekar (and the dance director and others who she says were complicit in the incident occurred in 2008 during the shooting of a film) and by professor Christine Blasey Ford in the US against federal judge Brett Kavanaugh, the one that’s the easiest to answer is the one being played out in front of us, by men, who ask with injured innocence: Why did it take so long for these women to speak up? To be fair, it isn’t only men who are doing the questioning; some women have questioned Dutta and Ford too, but the majority of those who are vocal about their scepticism, are men. And they are desperate to find a reason—any reason— that avoids the possibility that the man felt entitled. Why did the women not speak up earlier? Look at the responses. Instead of listening to the women and trying to understand their pain, many of their critics have tried to see something deeper, weaving a conspiracy theory perhaps, by trying to identify their political affiliation (in Ford’s case) and religion (in Dutta’s case). They propound unsubstantiated theories that women do it to blackmail men, that they are hungry for publicity, or that they have an insatiable thirst for revenge. The more convoluted the theory, the more plausible it seems to those who want to believe the men. The simple, straightforward explanation, that a stronger male asserted his perceived authority and forced himself upon a woman, is considered simplistic. That’s wrong. And the issue goes beyond these two high-profile cases. It affects our lives daily. Rather than laying down strict rules over the meaning of consent (and to repeat what I’ve said in the past, often—no means no, and even within marriage, no means no), the society forgives these men their trespasses, because the careers of those men matter. And so, other men think they too can get away with it, that liberties can be taken with women. And a culture of redress where complaints are addressed promptly, effectively, and fairly just doesn’t develop. The vituperation Ford has already received, and the abuses that have been hurled at Dutta indicate a certain type of masculine privilege and dehumanization, which will only make it harder for the next woman to say what she has experienced. The dehumanization works at both levels — the man loses his humanity, and he fails to see the human in the woman. If we are to ask the women in our lives — friends, family, acquaintances—if they’ve ever experienced unwelcome and unsolicited male advances, in almost each case, the answer would be a resounding yes.

The actor says Pradeep Sarkar has a great sense of humour and gets the work done on sets without raising his voice.

Kajol all praise for her director

New Delhi : Kajol who has collaborated with filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar for Helicopter Eela can’t stop gushing about her director. The actress feels that Sarkar who has made films like Mardaani, Parineeta among others, is one of the few directors who still makes relevant films. Kajol says, “He has just recently joined Instagram so that was a shocker. He has a great sense of humor and it’s evident at any given day and time. You don’t get that older judgmental feel from him or his films.” The 63-year-old director also doesn’t believe in raising his decibel on sets. “Everybody wants

Johnny Depp on domestic violence case: I was never going to be Cinderella

Los Angeles : Actor Johnny Depp, who faced accusations of domestic violence against his former wife Amber Heard, says he was never going to be Cinderella. With a barrage of accusations levied against him, the actor says he has been portrayed as Quasimodo, reports mirror.co.uk. Amber accused him of domestic violence during a bitter divorce battle, and he became embroiled in a lawsuit against his former management, which was settled in July. Meanwhile, a legal battle with a location manager who accuses him of violence on the set of shelved film City of Lies (which he denies) rattles on. “It hurts,” Depp said in an interview to a magazine. “To harm someone you love? As a kind of bully? No, it didn’t, it couldn’t even sound like me. Initially, I just kept my mouth shut, you know? I knew it was going to stick on me and it would get weirder.

to work with a director who will get the unexpected out of them and he does that without screaming and shouting on sets and doesn’t make you feel pressurised,” she addedThe actress who plays a single mother in the film says that everyone has a pre-conceived notion of what a perfect parent should be like. “In our head, consciously or unconsciously, we have an idea of what a perfect mother is and we have to live up to that image. Priyanka Chopra is Tanushree Dutta’s revelations will give women the a tech investor, too courage to say ‘No’: Aahana Kumra

Los Angeles : In one of her first acts as a startup investor, actress Priyanka Chopra recently toured the San Francisco home of her new portfolio company, a coding education company called Holberton School. The campus resembles a WeWork more than a school, with open-plan rows of desks, decorative neon lights and meeting rooms named after famous people. The school uses projects and group learning instead of more traditional courses, to teach software development. “You just hang out and you’re learning,” Chopra said. “It’s amazing.” Chopra, 36, has been doing a lot of hanging out and learning in technology circles lately. In between presenting at the Emmys, sitting in the front row at New York Fashion Week, celebrating the birthday

of her fiancé, Nick Jonas, in Texas, and darting to her native India to act in a movie, she has squeezed in meetings with startup founders and lined up future investments. “Geeks are taking over the world,” Chopra said. “If they haven’t already,” she quickly added. There’s no shortage of celebrities investing in tech startups. So far, deals from male actors, athletes and musical artists have garnered much more attention than those from famous women. Ashton Kutcher is a regular at tech conferences; Carmelo Anthony and Nas have their own funds; Leonardo DiCaprio has been an adviser to at least three venture firms. Tyra Banks, Beyoncé and Demi Lovato have participated in startup deals. But few women have built robust portfolios.

New Delhi : Ever since actor Tanushree Dutta has opened up about being allegedly harassed and mistreated on a film’s set by Nana Patekar and Vivek Agnihotri, many from the film fraternity have stepped up to extend their support to the actor. Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra Freida Pinto, Swara Bhasker, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Raveena Tandon, Priyanka Chopra and Richa Chadha among others expressed their concern over the matter and urged people to not indulge in victim shaming. Recently, in a

chat with indianexpress. com, Lipstick Under My Burkha fame Aahana Kumra also expressed her views on the entire incident. She is of the opinion that Tanushree’s courage to pull up her violators will give

strength to many other women to stand up against the wrong. Commenting on Tanushree Dutta and Nana Patekar incident, Aahana said, “This is a good thing that has happened. This is a male-driven

industry and with this, filmmakers should be scared. They should be worried that if someday they will misbehave with a woman, she will turn around and speak about it openly. She will not be inhibited.”

I always believed that this film would reach the masses… I feel glad that the collaborative effort of Varun and me has worked for the film and we have been a part of a successful film like ‘Sui Dhaaga’,” Anushka said. In the movie, Anushka plays village simpleton Mamta. The actor has been unconventional in her choice of roles right from her 2008 Bollywood debut Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The streak continued with projects like Band Baaja Baaraat, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, PK, NH10, Dil Dhadakne Do, Pari and now Sui Dhaaga. “I feel when I do diverse work like this or I do the so called ‘risky’ roles like these and when they do well, I feel a sense of validation for the choices that I have made.

Lewis Hamilton aiming to move closer to title at Japanese GP

London : Lewis Hamilton can take a major step toward a fifth Formula One title at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, a race the Mercedes driver has dominated in recent years. After winning last week’s Russian Grand Prix, Hamilton leads Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by 50 points with five races left. Hamilton has won three of the last four races at Suzuka with the only other win going to Hamilton’s former Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in 2016. He heads into Sunday’s race having won five of the last six races. “Lewis is hungry, focused and completely determined to succeed,” Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said. “It’s been great to see the power he has brought to this championship, and how he has taken it to the next level.” Hamilton’s win in Sochi was overshadowed by the decision

to have teammate Valtteri Bottas pull over to let Hamilton pass. Bottas started from pole and was in position for his first win of 2018 when the decision was made by the team. Wolff insisted ahead of the Japanese GP that the team orders tactic was justified. “The battle with Ferrari remains extremely close, as

was underlined by Sebastian’s pace on Sunday and the pressure he put us under,” Wolff said. “In the end, we left Sochi with a bigger lead. But we know that doesn’t mean anything because our fight with Ferrari is far from being over.” Even if Vettel wins all five remaining races, he’s not guaranteed to beat Hamilton.

Lionel Messi ran amok at Wembley Stadium, slicing Spurs apart with incisive passes from deep, such as the one that allowed Philippe Coutinho to open the scoring. London : Lionel Messi’s mesmeric display in Barcelona’s 4-2 Champions League win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday proved yet again that he is a class above the world’s other top players, team mate Jordi Alba has said. Investors become poorer by Rs 5 lakh crore in two days of market crash

New Delhi: Investors became poorer by Rs 5 lakh crore in two days of stock market crash where the BSE benchmark index plummeted by 1,357 points. Markets witnessed severe selling on Thursday with the benchmark Sensex crashing over 806 points to end at 35,169.16 after the rupee crashed to a new life-time low and global crude oil price breached the USD 86 a barrel. The gauge had lost 550.51 points on Wednesday on rupee woes and surging crude oil prices. Led by the sharp selloff in equities, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies tumbled Rs 5,02,895.97 crore to Rs 1,40,39,742.92 crore (USD 1.90 trillion). The dollar figure has been arrived at by calculating the m-cap from rupee’s intra-day low of 73.81 Thursday. With

this, market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms slipped below the USD 2 trillion. “The strongest of businesses and the bluest of blue chips have cracked in the last couple of sessions, which highlights the prevailing negative sentiment and an environment of pessimism. With the rupee hitting record low, crude prices moving northwards, increasing fears of a broadening current account deficit along with the liquidity worries led to another major fall in the indices and broader markets. “With deteriorating macros, all eyes will now be on the second quarter earnings and how the current liquidity situation is addressed,” said Devang Mehta, Head – Equity Advisory, Centrum Wealth Management.

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to interfere in the police probe and judicial custody of former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in a 22-year-old case in which he has been accused of planting drugs on a lawyer. Rejecting a petition by Bhatt’s wife Shweta Bhatt, a bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph said that it was not inclined to interfere with the High Court order handing over the investigation to state CID. Bullet train project: Gujarat HC issues notices to Centre, state over fresh petitions against land acquisition

Ahmedabad : The Gujarat High Court on Thursday issued notices to the state government as well as the Centre on a set of 30 fresh petitions against land acquisition process for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project. The petitioners, mostly farmers, had moved the court earlier this week after some of the original petitioners backed out. The farmers, who are from Surat, Valsad and Navsari districts of south Gujarat, have challenged the process of acquiring

land under section 3 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, contending that the appropriate authority to acquire land is the Centre and not the state government. The petitioners have also argued that if the land to be acquired falls in more than one state, the appropriate authority is the Central government, and hence in case of the bullet train project.

international Senate panel receives FBI report on Brett Kavanaugh

Washington : The Senate Judiciary Committee says it has received an FBI report on sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley tweeted early Thursday, “Supplemental FBI background file for Judge Kavanaugh has been received.” Grassley is expected to read the FBI report on Thursday morning, followed by his colleagues. Because the report is confidential, senators will not be allowed to talk about what’s in it. Republicans agreed to ask the FBI for an additional background check on Kavanaugh after his first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, testified last week that he sexually assaulted her when they were in high school. Kavanaugh denies the accusation. Ford’s attorneys have said she was not contacted for an interview. But the FBI spoke to a second woman, Deborah Ramirez, who claims Kavanaugh exposed himself to her when they were in college. Kavanaugh says that accusation is false. The full Senate is preparing to weigh in on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court with an initial vote on Friday.

Former Malaysian PM Najib Razak’s wife charged with money laundering

Kuala Lumpur : The wife of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was charged with 17 offences on Thursday, including money laundering, as anti-graft agents investigate billions of dollars missing from state coffers. The charges against Rosmah Mansor were read out by prosecutors at a Kuala Lumpur court, after she spent a night in detention following her arrest by anti-graft investigators on Wednesday. Rosmah pleaded not guilty to all charges. Najib, who lost office in May, faces 32 charges from money laundering to abuse of power and criminal breach of trust over billions of dollars that went missing from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). He has denied any wrongdoing. It was not clear if the charges against Rosmah relate to 1MDB, but Rosmah’s arrest came after three rounds of questioning by anti-graft agents over 1MDB, from which U.S. authorities say over $4.5 billion was misappropriated. Last Wednesday, Rosmah was questioned for nearly 13 hours Rosmah, who arrived in court flanked by dozens of armed police officers, smiling, waving and blowing kisses at the media, was charged with activities using illegal proceeds and failing to declare income tax, both covered under the anti-money laundering law. Prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram said these were non-bailable offences and that she had approached a witness to ask them to give a statement in her favour.

Washington : US Vice President Mike Pence, sharpening US criticism of Chinese policies around the globe, will give China a blunt warning on Thursday that the United States will not back down from what Washington sees as Chinese intimidation in the South China Sea. Pence will deliver an 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) address at the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington likely to increase tensions between the United States and China beyond trade disputes that have dominated President Donald Trump’s time in office. In excerpts of his speech seen by Reuters, Pence will call attention to an incident in which a destroyer, the USS Decatur, travelled within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson Reefs in the Spratly Islands on Sunday. Pence will say a Chinese naval vessel came within 45 yards (metres) of the USS Decatur “as it conducted freedom-of-navigation operations in the South China Sea, forcing our ship to quickly maneuver to avoid collision.”
