Telangana, Rajasthan Assembly elections: Rahul Gandhi is on his last leg of his campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in Rajasthan.

New Delhi : Telangana, Rajasthan Assembly elections: Addressing an election rally in Alwar, Tuesday Congress President Rahul Gandhi took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying he chants Bharat Mata Ki Jai in every speech, yet worked for Anil Ambani. “He (Modi) should begin his address by saying ‘Anil Ambani ki Jai’, ‘Mehul Choksi ki Jai’, ‘Nirav Modi ki Jai’ ‘Lalit Modi ki Jai’,” Gandhi said. Gandhi also attacked Modi over the Alwar suicide pact saying if Modi gave employment according to the promises he made before 2014 elections, why the four youths commit

suicide? Modi too stepped up his attack against Congress on Tuesday alleging that Kartarpur went to Pakistan at the time of independence because the then party leaders lacked vision and respect for Sikh sentiments. He was addressing a rally in Hanumangarh of Rajasthan. Referring to the recent stonelaying of the Kartarpur corridor across India-Pakistan border, Prime Minister said, “Correcting Congress’s mistakes was my destiny.” With Rajasthan elections just days away, Modi and Gandhi are scheduled to address separate public meetings in Rajasthan Tuesday.

BJP won 2004 polls: Imran

Islamabad/New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said war is not a solution to the Kashmir issue, which can be resolved through talks. In an interview to a group of television journalists in Islamabad, Imran Khan said unless there was a dialogue, various options on resolution of Kashmir cannot be discussed. When asked about the formula to resolve the Kashmir issue, the Pakistan Prime Minister said there were two or three solutions, which have been in discussions. He, however, refused to share more details, saying it was “too early to talk about them”. Imran Khan claimed he was informed by late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former foreign minister Natwar Singh during a conference that Kashmir would have been resolved if the BJP had not lost the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.“It shows that there is a solution of Kashmir and both countries were close to resolve it,” the Pakistani prime minister insisted. Ruling out the possibility of any war with India, he said two nuclear armed countries would not fight because “there are always unintended consequences”.

Will recite ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ 10 times: PM Modi hits back at Rahul

‘Cong has ‘naamdar’ and issued fatwa’ today that I shouldn’t start rallies with ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. And I crushed his fatwa,’ PM said. Jaipur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday latched onto Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ barb at him, saying he would recite the slogan ten times in the presence of lakhs of people. “Congress has a ‘naamdar’. That naamdar issued a ‘fatwa’ today that Modiji should not start addressing election rallies with ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. And therefore, I, today in the presence of lakhs of people here, I crushed his fatwa and said Bharat Mata ki Jai ten times,” he said at a rally in Sikar district of poll-bound Rajasthan. “You (Gandhi) should be ashamed for this. Freedom fighters embraced

death by saying Bharat Mata ki Jai. Our soldiers carry out surgical strikes and say Bharat Mata ki Jai. You are insulting Bharat Mata,” he said. Earlier in the day, Gandhi during a rally in Alwar district said the prime minister recites Bharat Mata ki Jai in all his election rallies, but works for industrialist Anil Ambani. “In every address, he says Bharat Mata Ki Jai and works for Anil Ambani. He should begin his address by saying ‘Anil Ambani ki Jai’, ‘Mehul Choksi ki Jai’, ‘Nirav Modi ki Jai’ and ‘Lalit Modi ki Jai’,” he said.

National Herald case: The bench, however, ordered that the I-T team can take up reassessment only after the court hears Gandhis’ petition against the Delhi High Court judgment that had allowed the tax probe

SC allows I-T to continue tax reassessment of Sonia, Rahul for 2011-12

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Tuesday allowed the Income Tax department to re-open the tax assessments of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for the financial year 20112012 in connection with the National Herald case. The bench, however, ordered that the I-T team can take up reassessment only after the court hears Gandhis’ petition against the Delhi High Court judgment that had allowed the tax probe. The court also said it is not expressing any opinion on the merits of pleas filed by the Gandhis. The next hearing in the matter is on January 8, 2018.

Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, too, has filed an appeal in the matter. The I-T probe against the Congress leaders stems from an investigation into a complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy before a court

in connection with the National Herald case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the I-T department, said the court should not restrain it from implementing the assessment orders against the Gandhis and others. He said the court should hear the matter and pass appropriate orders. Swamy had alleged that Young Indian Pvt Ltd (YIL), which had Sonia and Rahul on its board of directors, had “taken over” the assets of the defunct print media outlet in a “malicious” manner to gain profit and assets worth over Rs 2,000 crore.

MPC should take rate hikes off the table

The monetary policy committee (MPC) will decide its next move this week. The committee’s October meeting was held under the shadow of five main risks. First, global oil prices had soared in the previous months. Second, the sharp decline in the rupee would increase the cost of imported goods. Third, strong economic growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal year had closed the output gap. Fourth, it was unclear how the government’s decision to increase farm support prices would affect food prices in general, especially when combined with the fact that the monsoon this year has been well below average. Fifth, there was a question mark about the sanctity of the annual fiscal deficit target. Each of these could feed inflation, ending the surprisingly benign spell of the past few months. However, a lot has changed since the October meeting. Oil prices have retreated, the rupee has seen a small recovery, the economy seems to have slipped into a cyclical downturn and food prices remain muted. Only one of the risks that worried the members of the MPC in October seems to linger on—the fiscal situation. The big question before the MPC’s decision this week is how the changed circumstances will affect its inflation forecast, which is the intermediate target of Indian monetary policy under flexible inflation targeting. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has already reduced its inflation forecast twice this year. It is among the many central banks around the world that has overestimated price pressures in recent quarters. In the Indian case, the surprise has come from food prices. Core inflation is running far ahead of food inflation, which is to be expected as excess capacity in many parts of the economy has shrunk. The analytical puzzle is whether core inflation will move down towards food inflation, food inflation will move up towards core inflation, or the gap between the two will persist. Especially important will be the new data on inflation expectations of households that are known to adapt to recent trends in salient prices such as food and fuel rather than being anchored near the inflation target. The RBI had said in its October monetary policy report that it was changing the baseline assumptions being used in its inflation forecast model. The Indian basket of crude oil was assumed at $80 a barrel rather than $64 the central bank had assumed in April. The rupee would be at 72.50 to a dollar as against the April assumption of 65.50. The RBI had also said that inflation would ease by an estimated 20 basis points in case crude oil prices came down to $72. The price of a barrel of Brent crude is now at about $60 while the dollar trades at below 70 to a rupee.

Alia Bhatt to spend time with Ranbir Kapoor’s family

Mumbai : Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh are staying put for a few more weeks in New York City for Rishi Kapoor’s treatment. The Kapoors have maintained a dignified silence on the exact nature of the illness and the treatment amidst the rumours. So Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt will be visiting and spending the Christmas and the New Year period with the senior Kapoors this year. It can be recalled that it

was during the New Year period that Ranbir and Alia were in Israel preparing for their film Brahmastra when cupid’s arrow proved as the brahmastra in cementing their relationship after both of them were just out of relationships — Ranbir with Katrina Kaif and Alia with Sidharth Malhotra. “At a time when couples normally plan a quiet getaway, it is nice to know that Alia and Ranbir are trying to spend time with Ranbir’s

family, cheering up Rishi so that he can get better at the earliest. Rishi is admitted to the Sloan Kettering Hospital and the couple will be seen around Rishi during that period. Of course, they will have some us-time as well,” says a source. Rishi Kapoor went off to the US by the end of September for his treatment when his mother Krishna Raj Kapoor expired. Rishi wasn’t present due to his treatment.

Los Angeles : Aquaman director James Wan has revealed that he wanted to make a Batman movie, but with a twist. The director, who is mainly known for his horror movies like The Conjuring, says his take on the Caped Crusader would have been horror. At the Aquaman junket, Wan spoke to Heroic Hollywood. He said, “In the past, like most people, I loved the idea of directing Batman, but a horror version of Batman. That would be a potential fantasy of mine, but I feel like he’s been done quite a fair bit. But, I do love the idea of doing an outright scary Batman. I feel like that’d be really cool.” Batman is indeed done many times before and in as much varied tones. Currently, Matt Reeves is developing a noir take on the character.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

We have plans for all Indian batsmen, not just Virat Kohli, says Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh said his team’s bowlers have strategies in place and would be aiming for perfect execution when the action begins. Adelaide : The talk is all about Virat Kohli right now but the Australian bowlers’ preparation for other Indian batsmen is as detailed and anyone who thinks otherwise is plain “silly”, allrounder Mitchell Marsh said Tuesday. Gearing up for the four-match Test series that starts Thursday here, Marsh said his team’s bowlers have strategies in place and would be aiming for perfect execution when the action begins. “We all know Virat’s a great player. We’ll have our plans for him and hopefully we can execute them. But if people think we’re not prepared for

the other batsmen in the Indian team, who are all very good players, then they’d be pretty silly,” said Marsh. Marsh said the new faces and inexperience in the Australian batting lineup should be seen as an opportunity, rather than a sign of weakness for the hosts. “There’s obviously been a lot of talk about that and it’s been a big build up to this Test match but there’s a great feeling around this group… now it’s about going out there and hopefully putting it together as a batting unit. But we all feel really good at the moment,” he said.

Business ITR filing up 50 per cent so far this year: CBDT chairman

New Delhi: Income tax return filing for assessment year 2018-19 has so far seen a 50 per cent rise since last year, a top finance ministry official said on Tuesday. “This is the effect of demonetisation,” Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Sushil Chandra said on the sidelines a CII event. Demonetisation has been very good for increasing the tax base of the country. This year, we have already got around 6.08 crore income tax returns, which is 50 per cent higher than last year by this particular date, he said. He further added that the revenue department

will achieve direct tax collection target, which is 11.5 lakh crore, for the current financial year. “Our gross direct tax growth rate is 16.5 per cent and net direct tax growth rate is 14.5 per cent, which itself shows that demonetisation really helped in widening and deepening of tax base,” the CBDT chief insisted. He also said that so far 70 countries are sharing information with India under Automatic Exchange Of Information (AEOI). Chandra said that due to demonetisation, so far, the number corporate tax payers have gone to 8 lakh from 7 lakh last year.

Many pundits have tipped India to end their 70-year wait for a first test series triumph in Australia after their top batsmen Smith and Warner were banned for a year

Hosts are still favourites to win series, says Ajinkya Rahane

Sydney : Australia are still favourites to win the four-Test series against India even without Steve Smith and David Warner because of the strength of their bowling attack, Ajinkya Rahane said on Tuesday. Many pundits have tipped India to end their 70-year wait for a first Test series triumph in Australia after their top batsmen Smith and Warner were banned for a year in the aftermath of March’s ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Rahane, however, was keen to throw the pressure of expectation back on the hosts when the much-anticipated series gets underway in Adelaide on Thursday, and scoffed when he was asked whether Australia would be ripe for the picking. “Not really,” the India vice-captain told reporters at Adelaide Oval.“I feel that any team that plays at home, they feel really good, and I feel that Australia are still

the favourites to win the series. “We are not going to take them lightly at all. Yes, they (will) miss Steve Smith and David Warner but I don’t think they are vulnerable. “You see their bowling attack, they’ve got a really good bowling attack, and I think to win Test matches, you need to have

a really good bowling attack. So I feel that Australia are really still the favourites.” Although not quite reaching the heights of captain Virat Kohli’s 692 runs, Rahane had a good tour the last time India visited Australia in 2014-15 with 399 runs at an average of 57.

Why aren’t MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan playing domestic cricket: Sunil Gavaskar

New Delhi : Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the BCCI for allowing the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to skip domestic cricket ahead of a hectic six months culminating into the World Cup in England. Dhawan, who was dropped from the Test team, is spending time with family in Melbourne following the T20 leg of Australia

while Dhoni has had no cricket since the ODI series against the West Indies ended on November 1. The former captain is a certainty only in the 50-over format after he was ignored for the T20s against the West Indies and Australia. He retired from Tests in 2014. “We shouldn’t ask Dhawan and Dhoni ‘Why you are not playing domestic cricket?’.

The 201819 budget had estimated annual GST collection at Rs 13.48 lakh crore, which means a monthly target of Rs 1.12 lakh crore. “We are short by Rs 4,000 crore this month (November). This we want to increase to Rs 1.10 lakh crore,” Pandey said. GST collection in November was Rs 97,637 crore. according to a spokesperson for New South Wales state police. Australian media, quoting police sources, said Arsalan Khawaja was being questioned about forgery and an attempt to pervert justice. The arrest comes as Usman Khawaja prepares with the Australia squad in Adelaide ahead of Thursday’s first Test against India, the start of a

crucial four-match series in which the home side could challenge India’s position as the world’s top-ranked Test team. Tuesday’s police operation stemmed from the discovery in an office at the University of New South Wales of a laptop which contained an alleged hitlist naming former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and his deputy Julie Bishop.

Government have helped in massive improvement in the ranking in trade across borders to 80 this year.

Open borders an imperative of present times, says Jaitley

Mumbai: Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday called for open borders, saying trading across national boundaries is an “economic imperative of our times” and that barriers to free trade should be dismantled The comments come amid growing concerns over tariff wars across the world, especially after the US initiated a slew of actions against select goods to address its trade balance with select countries, including a few items like steel from the country “Trading across borders is an economic imperative of our times and this is

going to increase with the times to come,” Jaitley said at the 80th World Customs Organisation Policy Commissionerate meeting here through a video link “It is in the larger interest of every

country to make sure that trade barriers are brought down to the extent it is possible,” he said The minister said no country can manufacture all goods or specialise in rendering all services

which are needed by consumers wanting the best quality at the lowest prices, therefore the need for open trade Nations across the world are now realising that increased trade helps not just the global economy but also its own economy, he noted He also affirmed the Centre’s commitment to improving trade facilitation across borders and also adopt the best practices across the world Jaitley said the steps taken by the government have helped in massive improvement in the ranking in trade across borders to 80 this year, from 146 earlier.

CCI, Trai must check predatory pricing, unhealthy competition in telecom: MTNL chief

New Delhi: With the telecom sector bleeding under falling tariffs, er oding profitability, and mounting debt in the face of stiff competition tr iggered by below-the-cost tariffs and disruptive offerings of Reliance Jio, st ate operator MTNL has for the first time sought intervention of the Competition Commission of India and the TRAI to keep a check on predatory pricing and ensure a healthy contest among operators. “I would blame the intensity and the nature of competition for the state of the telecom sector. Healthy compet

ition is a must to keep an industry viable. But in telecom, competition has reached a level where everyone has forgotten what the term ‘healthy’ stands for. The competition is taking place at below cost price and suboptimal rates are being realised at the industry level wh ich means there is a scope for revisi t ing by everybody. But this has to be seen by the Competition Commission,” MTNL chairman and MD Praveen Kumar Purwar told Financial Ch ro n icle in an exclusive interview. Purwar said in a way echoed what

Finance minister Arun Jaitley had said at a recent CCI event where the TRAI ch airman was also present, “Excessive co mpetition at times can result in the pricing of nature that the sector of the economy itself feels stressed because everybody then tends to follow the leader.” In just over two years since starting 4G services, Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio has toppled Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel in terms of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) from access services making big revenue market share (RMS) gains

for the quarter ending September. According to the financial data collated by TRAI, Jio’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) from access services (which excludes national long distance, or NLD, services revenue) in the September quarter stood at Rs 8,271.86 crore, compared with Vodafone Idea Ltd.’s (VIL) Rs 7,528.35 crore and Airtel’s Rs 6,720.91 crore. Though the loss making MTNL is not a player yet in the 4G space for want of spectrum, below-cost tariffs haven’t spared its finances.
