Move confirms tougher stance after Donald Trump accuses ally of ‘lies and deceit’

US suspends $2bn in security assistance to Pakistan New Delhi : The US today suspended about $2 billion in security aid to Pakistan for failing to clamp down on the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network terror groups and dismantle their safe havens, a White House official said. The freezing of all security assistance to Pakistan comes after President Donald Trump in a New Year’s Day tweet accused the country of giving nothing to the US but “lies and deceit” and providing “safe haven” to terrorists in return for $ 33 billion aid over the last 15 years. The suspended amount also include $ 255 million in Foreign Military Funding (FMF) for the fiscal year 2016 as mandated by the Congress. The US has suspended about $ 2 billion

in security aid to Pakistan for failing to clamp down on the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network terror groups and dismantle their safe havens, a senior White House official told reporters on the condition of anonymity. The $ 2 billion security aid includes $ 900 million in the Coalition Support Funds (CSF) money to Pakistan for the fiscal year 2017, the senior White House

Indians are capable of doing almost everything for development of country: PM

New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the plans made by the government and the aspirations of the people should go together. Speaking at a conference on ‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ at Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, PM Modi said that “we are rich in immense abilities, we are living in the age of immense possibilities and we can achieve unequalled

achievements by becoming the birthplace of immense opportunities”. While upholding Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s principles, PM Modi said he had fought for social justice throughout his life. He also argued that although banks were nationalised, the poor people did not get access to them. “Banks were nationalised but that did not give the poor access to these banks. We changed that through Jan Dhan Yojana.

official said. In addition, the Department of Defence has suspended other unspent money from previous fiscal years. “Today we can confirm that we are suspending national security assistance only, to Pakistan at this time until the Pakistani government takes decisive action against groups, including the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network,” State Department

Spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters. “We consider them (terror groups) to be destabilising the region and also targeting US personnel. The US will suspend that kind of security assistance to Pakistan,” she said. The US, she said, will not be delivering military equipment or transfer security-related funds to Pakistan unless it is required by law. The White House has also denied allegation that the US is speaking the language of India, saying it is the decision of the administration. Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif yesterday alleged that Trump’s recent remarks against his country showed that he was “talking in the language of India”.

HRD Ministry identified 80k ‘ghost’ teachers through Aadhaar

New Delhi : The HRD Ministry has identified around 80,000 “ghost” teachers in various colleges and universities across the country after the introduction of Aadhaar. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, however, clarified that none of these teachers are from any central universities. “There are certain ‘ghost’ teachers which use proxy methods and are apparently teaching at multiple places full time. After the introduction of Aadhaar, 80,000 such teachers have been identified and action will be considered against them,” Javadekar said at an event. “The ghost teachers have not been identified in any central university but in some state universities and private ones,” he said. While the HRD Ministry has asked all universities to seek Aadhaar numbers from all employees and students to ensure there is no duplication, concerns have been raised about leakage of data.

Padmavati: Push for complete ban, Karni Sena chief to community members Jaipur : Shri Rajput Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi on Friday called upon the community members to gather in Chittorgarh on January 27 and push for a complete ban on the controversial Sanjay Leela Bhansali film ‘Padmavati’. “Members of the Rajput community will gather in Chittorgarh on January 27 to give a clear message that the sacrifice of Rani Padmavati has not gone in vein. Anyone who supports our call of banning the film can join us in Chittorgarh,” Kalvi said at a press conference in Jaipur. He said that they will not let the film to be released at any cost. A panel that reviewed the film in a special screening has expressed views that some of the facts presented in the film can upset the Rajputs and the Muslims both, but the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief has ignored that, he added. Kalvi said that it was high time the Centre and the state government set an example by not allowing the film to release. He said that Bhansali had earlier maintained that the film was based on history, later he said it was a period drama and now he has said that it was a fiction. “Till now, he has not been able to clarify his point,” he added. On December 30, the CBFC, headed by Prasoon Joshi, had announced that the Ranveer SinghDeepika Padukone-starrer ‘Padmavati’ would be given a U/A certificate and suggested that the director changed the film’s title to ‘Padmavat’. It had also suggested certain modifications in the disclaimer of the film, making it clear that it did not glorify the practice of “Sati”, and relevant changes in the song, “Ghoomar”, to befit the character portrayed in it. The CBFC had clarified that the U/A certificate would be issued to the film once the modifications were carried out and the final material was submitted.

Railways slashes back service charge on e-payment of ticket booking

The Congress needs to explain why it took one stand in the Lok Sabha and another in the Rajya Sabha as it “fully supported” the bill in the former and did not press even for division on amendments, Prasad said.

Triple talaq bill: Congress’ agenda is vote bank politics not gender justice, says Prasad New Delhi : With triple talaq bill stalled by the Opposition in Parliament, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday accused the Congress of pursuing vote bank politics and not gender justice, saying it has followed the same politics from Shah Bano case in 1986 to that of Shayara Bano in 2017. The senior BJP leader said the Congress could have made its suggestions on the bill in Parliament during a debate but it saw to this that no meaningful debate occur as it was driven by vote bank politics. The Congress needs to explain why it took one stand in the Lok Sabha and another in the Rajya Sabha as it “fully supported” the bill in the former and did not press even for division on amendments, he said.

Hindutva politics puts Assam in a mess

B JP’s Hindutva politics has brought Assam on the brink of a massive social unrest. The reason is the party’s decision to grant citizenship to all Bengali Hindu immigrants from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971, while holding all Bengali Muslim immigrants as ‘illegal infiltrators’ to be deported to Bangladesh. Whether this will be at all possible is quite another matter as Bangladesh has said repeatedly that not a single citizen of theirs is staying in Assam. To end the sevenyear-long ‘anti-foreigner agitation’ in Assam (1979-85), an agreement called Assam Accord was signed by the organisations leading the agitation on the one hand and by the then PM Rajiv Gandhi on the other in 1985. Para 5.8 of the Accord stated: “Foreigners who came to Assam on or after March 25, 1971, shall be expelled in accordance with law. Immediate and practical steps shall be taken to expel such foreigners.” The significance of March 25, 1971, was that Bangladesh declared independence and the liberation war started on that day. It was presumed that those who had come to Assam before that date were either victims of religious persecution (Hindus) or entered Assam due to economic reasons (Muslims). They would be allowed to stay on in Assam. It needs to be mentioned that the present BJP CM of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal was, at that time, a leader of the All Assam Students Union, one of the organisations spearheading the anti-foreigner agitation, and was one of the signatories to the Accord. The BJP (as Jan Sangh) had all along accused successive Congress governments in Assam of deliberately encouraging immigration of Muslims from Bangladesh and allowing them to settle in Assam in order to increase the party’s ‘vote bank.’ Now the BJP is being accused of indulging in vote bank politics by granting citizenship to Hindu Bengalis from Bangladesh. Before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi himself promised in public meetings that if the BJP came to power at the Centre, it would take steps to drive out all the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, irrespective of their religion. In the 2016 State Assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party but it failed to get a majority on its own. It had to rope in Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to form a coalition government. The party moved for the amendment of the Citizenship Act. This evoked a strong protest from the Assamese people of the Brahmaputra Valley who feared that if this process continued, then they would be eventually outnumbered by the Bengalis in their own land. The result was that the age-old Assamese-Bengali antipathy which had ended, was revived by the short-sighted policy of the BJP. Whatever support the BJP earlier had of the Assamese people was in the danger of evaporating. Then, in its desperate bid to saffronise Assam, it made another costly faux pas. Himanta Biswa Sarma, an ULFA man turned Congressman turned BJP man who now holds Finance and several other portfolios in the Sonowal Cabinet, announced that the state government would open twenty-two new ‘model’ colleges in Assam, all named after the late BJP leader Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.

Golden Globes 2018: Why Dunkirk could win Best Motion Picture (Drama)

Christopher Nolan has been one of the most visionary directors of our time. To be sure, his vision has not worked as well at times as he would have liked (The Dark Knight Rises could have been so much better) because of his preference of complicating things further, but one thing that cannot be discounted is his way of pushing standards, and creating something that nobody expected. It has been almost two decades since Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan released, and it has spawned multiple movies that have tried to mimic it in its viscerality especially the opening harrowing sequence that has not been equaled yet. Needless to say, no filmmaker succeeded even in faithfully mimicking Spielberg’s masterpiece. But it was Nolan who thought that war could be

presented in a different way that could be just as effective. Enter Dunkirk. Based on the evacuation of lakhs of Allied soldiers, mainly British, from the French place of the same name, Dunkirk is a movie that is vastly different from any war film that has come before. But it isn’t different from them just for the sake of it. It is different because it is a different sort of storytelling. In the film, the primary character is the event, the almost miraculous evacuation of the soldiers stranded with the Axis soldiers closing in on them. The characters, the common soliders, the captain, and so on are thinly drawn, but that is deliberate, so as to focus on the primary character – the Dunkirk Evacuation. That does not mean the film does not have action.

Taylor Swift wants lawsuit gone

A few weeks ago, two songwriters had filed a lawsuit against Taylor Swift saying that she stole phrases from them in her song Shake it off. Now, the singer has hit back saying, the phrases in question are too short to get legal protection, according to TMZ.com. Sean Hall and Nathan Butle wrote a song in 2001 called Playas Gon Play, performed by 3LW. The song repeatedly uses two phrases” Playas, they gonna play and Haters, they gonna hate.” Taylor and her legal team say Hall and Butler cannot “monopolise the idea that players will play and haters will hate.” She wants the lawsuit dismissed.

Mumbai: Sonam Kapoor won many accolades for her fantastic performance as Neerja Bhanot in ‘Neerja’. The actress was keen on doing another biopic based on the life painter Amrita Sher-Gil. It was earlier reported that Sonam has been roped in to play classic Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil. The report also stated that Sonam has been

in contact with Sher-Gil’s family in order to prepare for the role. Her son rightly stole her thunder whenever she stepped out with him, and amid his popularity, perhaps people didn’t realise how quickly she had shed her post-pregnancy weight. Be it walking the ramp for her close friend Manish Malhotra or shining at the red carpet of awards show or stills from her so-called comeback film ‘Veere Di Wedding’, the actress had showed that she was back at her fittest best. The actress went one step ahead and displayed her lean frame in bikinis for a leading magazine’s photoshoot. While the sultry actress almost reminded fans of her ‘size zero’ phenomenon years back, a lot of Instagram users were far from convinced.

Be as consistent as Indian selectors: Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal to Pakistan panel

Sports Special Tiger Woods will make his much-anticipated 2018 debut at this month’s Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego, his first official PGA Tour event since missing the cut at the same tournament last year.

Tiger Woods to start 2018 campaign at Farmers Insurance Open New Delhi: Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and discarded wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal have called on Pakistan selectors to show the same consistency as their Indian counterparts do while picking the national team. Butt and Kamran feel that Indian selectors, compared to their Pakistani counterparts, show more consistency in giving chances to their players. “India shows more consistency in allowing their players to play top-level cricket,” Butt noted. “Rohit Sharma’s batting average was around 25 and 30 at one stage but the Indian selectors gave him consistent chances and today he has become a world class performer,” Butt said. Butt and Kamran also felt that one reason for Pakistani not producing the same quality batting as India was because of the inconsistent nature of pitches used in the first class matches.

New Delhi: Former world number one Tiger Woods will make his much-anticipated 2018 debut at this month’s Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego, his first official PGA Tour event since missing the cut at the same tournament last year. Woods, who returned to competition last month in an 18-man exhibition after a near 10-month layoff during which he had spinal fusion surgery, will also play the Feb. 15-18 Genesis Open at Riviera, which is run by the Tiger Woods Foundation. “I’m

very excited to be back at Riviera,” Woods, 42, said in a statement on his website on Thursday. “I haven’t played at Riviera in a tournament in a very long time. To be able to play in an event that I used to come to as an

amateur, as a junior and now as the tournament host, that is on one of the most historic sites in all of golf, it’s a dream come true.” The American 14-times major champion swung freely and with no sign of back pain at

last month’s Hero World Challenge, where he began his latest comeback and finished tied for ninth in a field including eight of the world’s top 10 golfers. After that event Woods was vague when asked about his plans for 2018, saying only that he would set his playing schedule around building up toward the golf’s four major tournaments. He will no doubt feel very comfortable when he tees it up at Torrey Pines, having won the event seven times. It is also the venue where he won the 2008 U.S.

Credit Enhancement Fund to be launched by March: Finance Ministry

New Delhi: The Credit Enhancement Fund, announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley last Budget, is expected to be operational by the end of this fiscal, a senior Finance Ministry official said. The IIFCL-anchored fund will help raise credit rating of bonds floated by infrastructure companies and facilitate investments from long-term investors. “To ease flow of institutional credit to infrastructure projects, what the government has been thinking in this regard is credit enhancement. IIFCL is playing a lead role in that proposed institution,” Kumar V Pratap, Joint Secretary (Infrastructure Policy and Finance) in the Finance Ministry said. “We had a meeting on Friday with RBI and the credit rating agencies. So we hope to launch this fund within this financial year. Mechanics are being worked out,” he said at an event organised by India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) on the occasion of its 12th foundation day. Raising the credit rating of these companies would help easier access to institutional financing, he said. Jaitley in 2016-17 Budget speech had proposed that LIC will set up a dedicated fund to provide credit enhancement to infrastructure projects.

New Delhi: Reversing Thursday’s slide, gold prices bounced back by Rs 135 to trade at over one-month high of Rs 30,500 per 10 grams at the bullion market on Friday, largely driven by a firm trend overseas amid pick-up in buying by local jewellers. Silver followed suit and recaptured the Rs 40,000mark due to increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Bullion traders attributed the recovery in gold prices to a firm trend overseas as the weakness in dollar which hit a four-month low boosted demand for the precious metal as a safe-haven. Globally, gold rose by 0.72 per cent to USD 1,322 an ounce and silver by 0.58 per cent to USD 17.20 an ounce in New York on Thursday. In addition, increased buying by local jewellers at domestic spot market fuelled the uptrend, they said. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity rebounded by Rs 135 each to Rs 30,500 and Rs 30,350 per 10 grams, respectively, a level last seen on December 2. The precious metal had lost Rs 85 on Thursday.

Gujarat: Lecturer arrested after video shows him throwing mother off terrace RAJKOT: Three months after an old woman’s death was registered as a suicide, the city police have found that she was actually killed by her own 36-year-old son. Police arrested Sandip Nathwani, a lecturer at a city-based college, and booked him for the murder of his 64-year-old mother Jayshree. On September 27, police had registered a case of suicide

after prima facie it looked like Jayshree had jumped from the terrace of Darshan Avenue in Gandhigram area, where she was living. However, they got an anonymous letter stating that her death was not a suicide, but murder. Along with the letter, they received CCTV footage of the building following which a detailed probe was initiated. The CCTV footages clearly showed

that Jayshree was terminally ill and it was not possible for her to climb the terrace wall to jump.. The CCTV footage clearly showed that Jayshree was too ill to walk and she could barely climb one rung of the steps to the terrace. Sandip is seen holding her for support and she manages to climb with extreme difficulty. Probe revealed that she had suffered

a brain haemorrhage, which had severely affected her lower body. Deputy commissioner of police Karanraj Vaghela said, “We found from the CCTV footage that Jayshreeben’s son was with her. Looking at her ill condition, it was not possible for her to climb the 2.5 feet terrace wall and jump down. The role of her son then came under scanner.” During initial

interrogation, Sandip told the cops that his mother had gone for sun obeisance on the terrace and he was only helping her. However, he broke down eventually and confessed that he was fed up of her prolonged poor health. Hence, he decided to kill her. Due to her illness, there were frequent fights between Sandip and his wife. Neighbours also told police

Left without homes, 550 displaced Muslim 24-YEAR-OLD DIES IN SG families of Kalyannagar to restart stir HIGHWAY HIT-AND-RUN Vadodra : Almost a year after the construction of their insitu rehabilitation project was discontinued since the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) “exhausted” its funds, about 550 Muslim families of Kalyannagar, who were displaced in the November 2014 demolition drive undertaken by the civic body, have vowed to restart their agitation against the civic body. Professor J S Bandukwala, who has been leading the agitation since 2014, has now written to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, likening the developments to the apartheid system of South Africa, and terming the BJP-led VMC’s conduct “most shameful”. Bandukwala’s memorandum to Rupani rejects the offer of the VMC to facilitate alternate relocation of the families to Tandalja, after discontinuing the rental compensation of Rs 3,000, that was agreed upon in a 2015 resolution between the VMC, elected BJP MLAs and the representatives of the families to end the deadlock over the rehabilitation.

IN AHMEDABAD

The VMC, in its 2015 resolution, had promised to reconstruct the new homes in-situ at Kalyannagar under the then existing Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) scheme. However, VMC said it had “exhausted funds”, and ordered a probe against the executive engineer. The construction came to a standstill and, in August 2017, the civic body discontinued the rental compensation, stating that the families “have the option of accepting the new homes in Tandalja”. Stating that Muslims have the right to live anywhere, and not just in Muslim ghettos

like Tandalja, Bandukwala said, “The conclusion we can draw is that Muslims can only live in select Muslim localities. This is segregation as practised in the USA before Martin Luther King struggled to abolish it 50 years ago. Note that this apartheid system last prevailed in South Africa… Does Gujarat want a repeat of this apartheid in 2018 vis-à-vis Muslims?” He urged the CM to ensure that the construction on the promised homes in Kalyannagar resumes soon.

international Suspension of security aid to Pak not linked to Hafiz Saeed’s release: US

Washington: The Trump administration’s decision to suspend over USD 1.1 billion security assistance to Pakistan has nothing to do with Islamabad not taking action against Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, a US official has said. “We have certainly expressed our concern about the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks being let out of house arrest in Pakistan. To my knowledge, that has nothing to do with that,” State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said at her daily news conference. Nauert was responding to a question if the suspension of security assistance was related to Hafiz Saeed, the Mumbai attack mastermind who was released by Pakistan on November last year. “There is a USD 10 million reward out for information leading to his re-arrest, the person who is the mastermind of the Mumbai attacks who was let go in Pakistan. So we’ve been very clear about our displeasure with that individual being let go, and that’s why we like to remind people that there is a USD 10 million Rewards for Justice program out for him,” Nauert said. A senior State Department official told reporters that the US continues to have conversation with Pakistan not only on Haqqani network, and Taliban, but also on India-centric terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. “We can’t continue to have a relationship that has a business as usual with Pakistan. This conversation is not new to this administration. There have been concerns about Pakistan’s issue of sanctuaries for the Haqqani network and the Taliban. But we have concerns about their nuclear programme. We have concerns about

the ability of anti-Indian groups like Lashkar-eTaiba and Jaish e Mohammed to fund raise and operate,” the official who spoke on anonymity said. Hafiz Saeed who was recently released from house arrest is among the issues that have been a feature of America’s conversation with Pakistan for many years. “This administration felt that we needed to take additional steps to underscore that we’re not going to be able to continue the relationship on autopilot. We can’t continue a status quo relationship. We need to be able to move beyond these challenges and put our relationship on a more solid footing,” the official said. Responding to a question, the official disputed the general impression coming out of Pakistan that it will not rearrest Hafiz Saeed as being demanded by the US.

Will damage ties with partner India: US lawmakers criticise H-1B visa changes Washington: Some US lawmakers and advocacy groups have criticised the Trump adminisration’s reported plan to curb H-1B visa extensions that could result in self-deportation of an estimated 500,000750,000 Indian Americans, saying the move would drain America of talent. The proposal, which was part of President Donald Trump’s “Buy American, Hire American” initiative that he vowed to launch on the campaign trail, is being drafted by Department of Homeland Security leaders, according to reports. The H-1B program offers temporary US visas that allow companies to hire highly skilled foreign professionals working in areas with shortages of qualified American workers.

Trump reacts to book with ‘Fire and Fury,’ threatens author, ex top aide

Washington: US President Donald Trump’s lawyer said on Thursday he would try to stop publication of a book that portrays an inept president in a fumbling White House and threatened legal action against former top aide Steve Bannon over “defamatory” comments in the book. “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” by author Michael Wolff set off a political firestorm with its portrayal of Trump as not particularly wanting to win the US presidency in 2016 and unprepared for the job. Some of the harshest commentary came from Bannon, the right-wing firebrand who headed the final stage of Trump’s campaign and became chief strategist at the White House before being fired in August. Charles Harder, Trump’s personal lawyer, in a legal notice provided to Reuters, warned of possible claims including libel against Wolff and publisher Henry Holt & Co and threatened to try to block publication of the book. Harder also said that “legal action is imminent” against Bannon. Henry Holt said in a statement it had received a cease-and-desist letter from Trump’s attorney but would go ahead with publishing the book. Earlier, the publishing house said that “due to unprecedented demand,” it would release

the book on Friday morning, rushing it to print after previously planning to put it out next Tuesday. Wolff did not respond to a request for comment. Trump cut ties with Bannon on Wednesday, saying his former adviser had “lost his mind,” in a blistering statement issued after comments attributed to Bannon in the book were made public. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders heaped scorn on Bannon and the book at her briefing on Thursday. She said Breitbart News should consider firing Bannon and attempted to cast doubt on Wolff’s accuracy. She called the book “some trash” that came from “an author that no one had ever heard of until today.” “This book is mistake after mistake after mistake,” she said. Trump lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter to Bannon on Wednesday asking him not to disclose any confidential information. They said Bannon had breached an agreement by communicating with Wolff about Trump, his family and the campaign and made “disparaging statements and in some cases outright defamatory statements” about them. In the book, Bannon was quoted as describing a June 2016 meeting with a group of Russians at Trump Tower in New York as “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.”
