AAP mulls contempt petition against officials who don’t comply with govt order

New Delhi : A day after the Supreme Court clipped the powers of the LG, the Delhi government and bureaucrats remained on opposite sides of the administrative fence with the AAP leadership saying it is likely to move a contempt petition against those who had refused to comply with its directive on transfers and postings. Hours after the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment, which said the LG is bound by the elected government’s advice and cannot be an “obstructionist”, the Delhi

government on Wednesday introduced a new system for transfer and postings of bureaucrats, making Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal the approving authority. However, the services department refused to comply, saying the Supreme Court did not abolish the notification issued in 2016 which made the Ministry of Home Affairs the authority for transfers and postings. The government is exploring legal options and is likely to move a “contempt petition” before the Supreme Court on the matter, said a government spokesperson.

Sunanda Pushkar death case: Shashi Tharoor granted anticipatory bail New Delhi : Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Thursday accepted Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s anticipatory bail plea, thereby granting him protection from arrest, in the case of his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death. Special Judge Arvind Kumar granted Tharoor the relief on the condition that Tharoor furnishes a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and also directed him not to leave the country without permission. The judge also asked him not to tamper with evidence. In his plea for anticipatory bail, Tharoor had submitted that the charge sheet in the case was filed and the Special Investigation

Team (SIT) had categorically stated that the probe was concluded and that his custodial interrogation was not required. The acceptance of the bail plea came a day after the Delhi Police opposed it, saying Tharoor might “flee the country”. Special Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava said since Tharoor is an influential person, he may harm the investigation. “He is a frequent flier and may settle abroad. Some of the key witnesses — including Narayan Singh and Bajrangi — are still working with Tharoor and he may influence them,” he had said earlier.

The test was over in 259 seconds, during which the Escape System and the module soared skyward, before arching out over the Bay of Bengal and floating back to earth using its parachutes, about 2.9 km from Sriharikota, it added. The ISRO has already conducted technology

demonstrator tests of indigenously made Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), capable of launching satellites into orbit around Earth and then re-entering the atmosphere. The ISRO said the crew module reached an altitude of nearly 2.7 km under the power of its seven specifically designed quick-acting solid motors to take it away to a safe distance without exceeding the safe g-levels.

Vijay Mallya assets case: UK court grants enforcement order in favour of Indian banks Recently, Mallya had issued a statement to the media where he called the charges against him as politically motivated

New Delhi : The consortium of 13 Indian banks, who are seeking to recover the funds owed by embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya, had an enforcement order issued in their favour by a UK High Court judge. Mallya has been accused of fraud and money laundering worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore and is fighting extradition to India. According to the order, a High Court Enforcement Officer has the permission to enter the businessman’s properties in London and UK. It permits the officer and his agents entry to Ladywalk and Bramble Lodge

in Tewin, Welwyn, where Mallya is currently based. However, it is not an instruction to enter, which means the banks have the option to use the order as one of the means to recover estimated funds of around 1.145 billion pounds. As per PTI, the judge was reported to have noted: “The

High Court Enforcement Officer, including any enforcement agents acting under his authority, may enter Ladywalk, Queen Hoo Lane, Tewin, Welwyn… and Bramble Lodge, Tewin, Welwyn, including all outbuildings of Ladywalk and Bramble Lodge to search for and take control of goods belonging to the First Defendant (Mallya).” “The High Court Enforcement Officer, including any Enforcement Agent acting under his authority, may use reasonable force to enter the property if necessary,” it states.

‘Naik brand’ jihad through preaching

I t is the quirkiest of propositions that the man who said every Muslim should be a terrorist does not feel safe from prosecution in India. Controversial preacher Zakir Naik, who inspired many a terrorist attack with his hate speeches, has been living in Malaysia since 2016 after the Razak government gave him permanent residency in the country. Razak, himself, is under fire and has since been hauled up for siphoning billions of dollars out of the country and abuse of power. With Mahathir Mohammed back in charge in what seemed to be a most unlikely term, many of his predecessor’s policies have been reversed and it is obvious that Naik will not enjoy government benediction any longer. The Modi government has been pursuing the extradition of the radical Islamic preacher, who makes it a point to run down all other religions and, once, even gave a call for all schools to be shut down because girls going there were likely to lose their virginity. Malaysia had taken the stand that the hatemonger could be extradited if India formally asked for it, with the backing of proper documentation, including an Interpol red alert. In January this year, the ministry of external affairs had initiated a formal request for his extradition. With Razak out of the way, the process gathered momentum and it was reported that Naik was ready to take a flight out of the country, although the maverick preacher denied any such plan. Naik, a medical doctor by profession, took to propagating the puritanical brand of Islam, recommending death penalty for homosexuals and those who abandon Islam as their faith, through his Islamic Research Foundation and Peace TV, and used to draw large crowds as he delivered firebrand speeches that incited his audiences. He took up residence in Malaysia after several countries, including Bangladesh, UK and Canada, banned his entry. He is wanted in India by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has registered a case against him under anti-terror laws for promoting enmity between different religious groups. Naik’s is one of the early cases of professionals taking to the path of Islamic extremism, many of whom later on ended up with the ISIS and other terrorist outfits. Well-funded terrorist organisations have been successfully running recruitment drives in different parts of India, enticing youths to join the jihadi movement with the promise of economic empowerment and heaven. Many of them perished in the battlefields of Syria and other war zones. With a well-established network of followers, particularly based in the Middle East, it is most unlikely that Naik will oblige the Indian law-enforcers by taking a direct flight home, although he has promised to return to “his homeland” when he feels that the “government will be just and fair”.

New Delhi : Sanju showed several aspects of Sanjay Dutt’s life. However, there was a lot of stuff which was kept away to either respect the people involved or because they were too many things to show on screen, or maybe because it was a conscious decision of director Rajkumar Hirani and his team. We list down things which remained untouched in Ranbir Kapoor starrer Sanju. Sanju has no mention of Sanjay Dutt’s first wife Richa Sharma, a former actor who Sanjay met during his rehab days. Richa was diagnosed with brain tumour and got treated at the same hospital in the US as Sanjay’s mother Nargis. It is said that Sanjay couldn’t balance his personal and professional life then. This was also a reason for his strained relationship with daughter Trishala for many years. Though fatherdaughter duo have buried the hatchet now, this entire phase of his life was missing in Sanju. Sanjay’s second wife Rhea Pillai also finds no place in the film. He married Rhea two years after Richa’s death. The two had quite a public separation.

And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. What has helped has been the immense outpouring of love and support I’ve received over the past few days, for which I am very grateful.

SRK’s daughter Suhana looks steaming hot in bikini but trolls poke their noses again

New Delhi: Though the recent pictures of Shah Rukh Khan and his family are giving major vacation goals, seems like a few did not go well with some people on social media. A picture of the Badshah of Bollywood’s daughter Suhana is doing the rounds, where she can be seen donning a brown bikini and sunglasses, with her hair open. The picture also has AbRam soaking up the sun. The actor is currently enjoying a family vacation across Europe. However, the absolutely stunning picture of the 18-year-old has attracted several haters and trolls on Instagram.

Kriti Sanon: I’m learning something new every single day while playing different characters Mumbai : Actor Kriti Sanon believes there is more insecurity in the acting profession but the only way to survive in the industry is to go with the flow and understand that nothing lasts forever. An engineering graduate, Kriti became a model before debuting as an actor with Heropanti in 2014. She has since featured in films such as Dilwale, Raabta and Bareilly Ki Barfi. “There is insecurity and competitiveness here, but that is in every field. Maybe it’s a little bit more here, but that’s the kind of job I’ve chosen for myself. The best way is to go with the flow, be true to yourself

and put your 100 per cent, so you don’t regret not doing something you could have,” Kriti said. The actor says rather than focusing on quantity, one should do a film for the right reasons. “I realise that success and failure both don’t last for too long, you are as good or bad as your last film. It’s very important to choose the film for the right reason. It’s important to balance things out and not get stuck in one kind of cinema or genre. As an actor, it not only helps me grow but also gives the audience to see a different version of you. I’ve always tried to do that.” The 27-yearold actor says learning is a constant in life

as that helps one to evolve. “I’m learning something new every single day while playing different characters. Like, I am learning about my own processes, what works and doesn’t work for me. With every director, actor you imbibe certain things, learn about the technicalities of filmmaking, especially when you are an outsider.” Kriti is excited about her line up of films. She has Arjun Patiala with Diljit Dosanjh, Lukka Chuppi co-starring Kartik Aryan, the comedy franchise Houseful 4 and Ashutosh Gowariker’s period drama Panipat featuring Arjun Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Wimbledon 2018: John Isner saves match points to reach third round

India vs England 2nd T20I: India eye series win at Cardiff against England

Manchester : India drew the first blood with a thumping victory over England at Old Trafford, Manchester on Tuesday. Kuldeep Yadav’s 5/24 and KL Rahul sensational hundred put India 1-0 ahead in the three-match T20 series. Heading into the second T20I at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, a confident team India will look to wrap up the series with another convincing win over their rivals. England, however, does not need to panic and would rather benefit with self-introspection. Negotiating the wrist spinners and overcoming the middleovers being the primary. Patience will be the key for Three Lions if they are to succeed in the shortest format of the

game against the likes of Yuzvenfra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. Facing a bowler like Kuldeep Yadav who can turn it both ways with enormous control is challenging for any team but England it proved a bit too much as they succumbed from 90/1 to 149/8. Reportedly the English camp will deploy the services of spin-bowling machine ‘Merlyn’ at Cardiff to prepare their batsmen better. But captain Eoin Morgan had also emphasized the need to remain patient as dealing with pace is something the Englishmen are comfortable with. That is evident from the good start and flourish they got towards the end of innings in the first game.

London : John Isner said he had slept badly the previous night after tossing away a two-set lead to leave his Wimbledon second-round match against Ruben Bemelmans hanging in the balance. When he returned on Thursday he spared himself a nightmare defeat by saving two match points on his way to securing a 6-1 6-4 6-7(6) 6-7(3) 7-5 victory. The American had led by two sets and 4-0 in the third-set tiebreak on Wednesday and would have had a day off had he not squandered a match point and allowed qualifier Bemelmans to fight back to two sets apiece. On the resumption, Isner found himself staring down the barrel in the 10th game of

the decider but he served two of his 64 booming aces to save two match points at 15-40 before taking the next two games to reach the third round. Isner had got into a furious argument with umpire Mohamed Lahyani the previous evening after Belgian Bemelmans twice got the benefit of Hawk-Eye decisions that him questioning whether the line-calling technology had malfunctioned. “I felt like I won that match twice, because at that point I go up a break,” Isner said of the Hawk-Eye controversy in the fourth set. “Mohamed, the referee, said it was out but Hawk-Eye didn’t. I never saw anything like that.”

Pakistan vs Australia 5th T20I Tri-series: Pakistan beat Australia by 45 runs Pakistan scored 194/7 in 20 overs against Australia. Riding on a brilliant 73 from Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan dominated the Australian bowling line up for most of the innings.

Islamabad : Pakistan and Australia had already made their place in the final but Sarfraz Ahmed’s men didn’t take this game lightly and thumped Australia by 45 runs. Riding on a brilliant 73 from Fakhar Zaman and a late surge by Shoaib Malik, Pakistan scored 194/7 in 20 overs and later, Shaheen Afridi caused the damage as he returned with figures of 3/37 in four overs. For Australia, no batsmen stepped

up and took the responsibilty as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Australia are left with one match against Zimbabwe before playing the final on Sunday against Pakistan. Pakistan have broken Australia’s streak in the tournament as they have defeated Australia by 45 runs. Shaheen Afridi scalped three wickets in his four overs Mohammad Amir has the breakthrough and he sends Ashton Agar packing for 11.

Air India changes Taiwan name to Chinese Taipei on website

New Delhi: National carrier Air India has changed the name of Taiwan to Chinese Taipei on its website, following instructions from the government, an airline spokesperson said. China had raised concerns about Taiwan being described as a separate region by various airlines worldwide. The spokesperson said Air India followed the procedure as advised by the Ministry of External Affairs in updating the airline’s website with respect to changing name of Taiwan. Air India operates flights to two destinations in China region -- Shanghai and Hong Kong. While Air India does not have flights to Chinese Taipei, it has a code share with Air China. This

is the reason that this destination is listed on Air India website. Now, Air India describes Taiwan as ‘Taipei, Taoyuan International Airport, TPE, Chinese Taipei’ on its website. Code sharing allows an airline to book its passengers on its partner carriers and provide seamless travel to destinations where it has no presence. In April, the Civil Aviation Authority of China had sent out letters to various foreign airlines asking them to change the way Taiwan was referred to in their websites, as per media reports. Chinese tabloid Global Times carried an opinion piece titled ‘Indian scholars wrong in equating territory row with Taiwan status’ on July 3.

New Delhi: State Bank of India (SBI) has emerged as the market leader in the housing finance business, snatching market share from housing finance companies (HFCs) like HDFC. Data shows SBI remains the leader in mortgage finance with an overall market share of 20.2 per cent in FY18, up from 17.6 per cent in FY17, while the share of most others came down. SBI is closely followed by Housing Development and Finance Corporation (HDFC) at 18.8 per cent market share as of March 2018, down

from 19.4 per cent in FY17. SBI’s home loan book today stands at Rs 3.13 lakh crore, which is more than double that of private sector peer ICICI Bank. SBI has been targeting mid-income individuals, preferably salaried with good three-year credit history, and lower ticket size of Rs 20-30 lakh (mainly affordable housing customers) by offering them fairly attractive interest rates on their existing mortgage loans, according to brokerage Emkay Global Financial Services.

Supreme Court Panel formed to resolve ‘issues’ of private power firms Ahmedabad : After representations made by private power generators, the Gujarat government has formed a three-member committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice R K Agarwal, “to suggest early resolution” to issues faced by imported-coalbased power plants owned by Adani Power, Tata Power and Essar Power. The committee will have former Deputy RBI Governor S S Mundra and former chairman of CERC Pramod Deo as its two other members. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations in two months and will be assisted by NTPC and SBI Capital Markets Ltd. The committee was formed after a “series of meetings and discussions”, wherein in “it was decided by all the procurer states that Gujarat being a lead procurer should initiate action for resolution of the issues related to these projects”,

sources said. The order comes as a relief for the three private power producers who had been in the bind after the Supreme Court set aside an Appellate Tribunal for Electricity’s decision that allowed Adani Power and Tata Power to charge compensatory

tariff against the increased cost of coal imported from Indonesia. Last year in June, Tata Power had offered to sell 51% of it’s stake in Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd (that operates the 4000 MW Mundra power plant) for a token sum of Rs 1 to discoms. Similar offers were also made by Adani Power for it’s 4620 MW power plant at Mundra and Essar Power for it’s 1320 MW power plant at Salaya.

Tehran : Iran’s representative to OPEC says US President Donald Trump should stop tweeting about wanting lower oil prices, saying that doing so has the opposite effect. Hossein Kazempour Ardebili was quoted by the oil ministry’s website today as telling Trump to “please stop,” adding that “with your frequent and indecent tweets oil prices have gone up 10 dollars.” Trump has repeatedly called on the oil cartel to reduce prices. Yesterday he tweeted that OPEC is “doing little to help,” adding that, “if anything, they are driving prices higher.” Tehran blames rising prices on US sanctions imposed on Iran and Venezuela, founding members of the cartel. Last month, members of OPEC agreed to pump an additional 1 million barrels of crude daily, a move that should help contain prices.

Japan nuclear agency urges measures to cut plutonium stocks

Tokyo : Japan’s nuclear policy-setting body on Thursday endorsed a call for stricter management of its fuel recycling program to reduce its plutonium stockpile. The annual “nuclear white paper” approved by the Atomic Energy Commission is a response to intensifying pressure from Washington as it pursues denuclearization in North Korea. It says Japan’s fuel recycling program should minimize the amount of plutonium extracted from spent fuel for reuse in power generation to eventually reduce the stockpile. Japan has pledged transparency and pledged not to possess plutonium that does not have a planned use, but the promise increasingly sounds empty because of the slow restarts of Japanese reactors that burn plutonium amid setbacks from the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

Thailand : Rescuers in Thailand were no closer on Thursday to deciding when and how to extract 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave complex, where they were found this week, pale and weak but otherwise in good health, after nine days lost underground. The dramatic search and rescue operation for the junior soccer team, who disappeared in the cave in the northern province of Chiang Rai on June 23, had seemed to be nearing an end when British and Thai divers found the boys late on Monday, clustered on a small, muddy bank in a flooded chamber. Attention has now turned to how to get the group back out through several kilometres of dangerously flooded tunnels. The navy has raised the possibility that the 13 could be in the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province until the flood waters recede, at the end of the rainy season in four months.

China warns US “opening fire” on world with tariff threats

Beijing : The United States is “opening fire” on the world with its threatened tariffs, the Chinese government warned on Thursday, saying Beijing will respond the instant US measures go into effect as the two locked horns in a bitter trade war. The Trump administration’s tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese imports are due to go into effect at 12.01 am eastern time on Friday (0401 GMT Friday), which is just after midday on Friday Beijing time. US President Donald Trump has threatened to escalate the trade conflict with tariffs on as much as a total of $450 billion in Chinese goods if Beijing retaliates, with the row roiling financial markets including stocks, currencies and global trade of commodities from soybeans to coal. China has said it will not “fire the first shot”, but its customs agency said on Thursday in a short statement that Chinese tariffs on US goods will take effect immediately after Washington’s tariffs on Chinese goods kick in. Speaking at a weekly news conference, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman Gao Feng warned the proposed US tariffs would hit international supply chains, including foreign companies in the world’s secondlargest economy.
