Hizbul’s ‘hardcore motivator’ Touseef Ahmad Gudna arrested in J&K

Jammu: A top member of terror group Hizbul Mujahideen, who was involved in encouraging young men and women to join the outfit and revive terror activity in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, has been arrested, the police said on Wednesday. Touseef Ahmad Gudna, who also goes by the name Abu Bakar, was arrested on specific information received by the Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday, a police spokesman said. The arrest of the “hardcore motivator” comes just two months after police found out about a module of the terror outfit planning to carry out grenade attacks and revive terror activity in the district. Gudna’s name came up during interrogation of the two Hizbul Mujahideen members who were arrested on July 1. With Gudna’s arrest, there is a “likelihood of decrease in terrorist activities and reduction in the number of youth indulging in anti-national activities”, the police spokesman said.

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that the reasons for the fall in rupee against the dollar are purely global. He said, “If you look at the domestic economic situation and global situation, there are not domestic reasons attributable to this, but all reasons are global.” He added that the rupee is better off now than what it was four to five years ago. “We must bear in mind that dollar has strengthened against almost every currency. The rupee has either consistently strengthened or remained in a rage, not weakened.” He assured that the Reserve Bank of India is working in the right direction and taking necessary action. “I don’t think there is any need for the world’s fastestgrowing economy to come out with panic and knee-jerk reactions,” Jaitley said.

The party president said the decision to hold local body and panchayat polls was taken in a ‘hurried manner’.

Will boycott J&K local body polls unless Centre protects Article 35A: Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference will boycott the local body and panchayat elections in the state unless the Centre takes effective steps for protection of Article 35A of the Constitution, which is facing legal challenge in the Supreme Court, party president Farooq Abdullah said on Wednesday. “The core group (of NC) unanimously decided that the National Conference will not participate in these elections unless and until the government of India and the state government clarify their positions in this regard and take effective steps for protection of Article 35A in and outside the courts,” Abdullah said after the meeting in Srinagar. He said the decision of the state administration to hold urban local body polls and panchayat elections was taken in a “hurried manner” and without taking into consideration

Delhi HC to hear plea seeking deregistration of Owaisi’s AIMIM as political party New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Wednesday will take up a plea seeking to deregister Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM for allegedly seeking votes in the name of religion and raising only issues related to Muslims. The plea moved by the Shiv Sena’s Telangana unit president asked the high court to set aside Election Commission of India’s June 19, 2014 order that granted recognition to All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Musalimeen (AIMIM) as a state political party. The petitioner, Tirupati Narasimha Murari, claimed that the party violates the provisions of the Representation of the People Act as it opposes the concept of secularism. “The constitution of AIMIM clearly raises issues relating to Muslim community and thinks only for the welfare of Muslims, which is violative of the principles of secularism as envisaged by the Constitution of India… “The party having aim and object for the benefit of only Muslim community, formed on communal concept can in no way fulfil the object of secular principles. The declaration given by AIMIM to uphold the secular principles is farce and fraud on the law and the constitution,” the plea claimed.

the prevailing situation “created by the powers that be by unnecessarily fiddling with Article 35A”. The state government last week announced the schedule for holding elections to local bodies and panchayats in the state. While the urban local body polls are slated for the first week of October, the Panchayat elections are scheduled to be held in November-December this year. Abdullah said the core group had a detailed discussion about the prevailing situation in the state with particular reference to Article 35A of the Constitution. “It was felt that any tinkering with Article 35A would prove disastrous not only for our state but for the entire country”. He said the stands of the central government and the present dispensation in Jammu and Kashmir before the Supreme Court goes “clearly against the wishes and aspirations of the people of the state”.

verdict on Section 377 tomorrow

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will pronounce its much-awaited verdict on petitions challenging the validity of Section 377 that criminalises homosexuality tomorrow. The verdict is expected to be a landmark judgement with gay rights activists believing that the top court will strike down section 377. The apex court had reserved its verdict in July, after a five-judge constitution bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices Rohinton Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, held marathon hearings. During the hearings, the Supreme Court had observed that stigma attached to ‘gay sex’ will be removed once the ‘criminality attached to Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) goes. The Centre, which had initially sought the adjournment for filing its response to the petitions, had later left to the wisdom of the court the issue of legality of the penal provision with regard to the aspects of

criminalising consensual unnatural sex between two consenting adults. The ban on gay sex has been challenged by five high-profile petitioners -- classical dancer Navtej Jauhar, journalist Sunil Mehra, chef Ritu Dalmia, hoteliers Aman Nath, Keshav Suri and business executive Ayesha Kapur – along with 20 former and present students of the IITs. Section 377 refers to ‘unnatural offences’ and says whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life.

Wednesday attacked Rahul Gandhi, saying instead of demanding an account of work done by Narendra Modi government in the last four years, the Congress president should answer why development did not reach the masses during the “six-decade rule of his family”. Shah was speaking after flagging off the second phase of preelectoral drive of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh to reach out to voters from Kurubhat village near Dongargarh in Rajnandgaon district.

of former prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Addressing a rally at the Pragyagiri ground in Kurubhat village, Shah claimed Rahul Gandhi had no the right to question the Modi government and slammed the performance of previous Congress governments. “His (Gandhi) government was in power for 60 years but why electricity did not reach villages…. Why farmers did not get better MSP…. Why benefits of other welfare schemes did not reach masses.

Farmers, labourers hold rally in Delhi, demand loan waiver, better wages

New Delhi: Thousands of farmers and labourers from across the country held a massive protest in the national capital on Wednesday against what they called “anti-people” policies of the Modi government, and demanded higher prices for farm produce, waiver of loans and better wages. The protesters, holding placards and shouting antigovernment slogans, marched from Ramlila Maidan to Parliament in Central Delhi, and warned the ruling BJP that it will have to pay a heavy price in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls for ignoring the demands of the disadvantaged people. The ‘Mazdoor

Kishan Sangharsh Rally’, organised by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and All-India Agricultural Workers’ Union (AIAWU), also demanded concrete measures to generate jobs, minimum monthly wage of Rs 18,000 for workers,

halting “forcible” land acquisition and stopping changes in labour laws. The organisers claimed nearly 1.5 lakh farmers and labourers from at least 23 states have participated in the protests, preparation for which had started several months back. The protest has thrown the traffic out of gear in several parts of Delhi. “The massive protest is a warning to the BJP government ahead of the Lok Sabha elections as for the last four years it has ignored the demands of the farmers and the workers,” said Tapan Sen, general secretary of CITU, a leading trade union.

Year after Gauri Lankesh murder, SIT says case in final stage of investigation

Bengaluru: Activist-journalist Gauri Lankesh’s murder case is in the final stage of investigation and a chargesheet will be filed in two months, a senior SIT official probing the killing said Wednesday. The Special Investigation Team, under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police (West) B K Singh, has arrested 12 people in connection with the killing of Lankesh, known for her strong anti-Hindutva stand, on September 5 last year. Some of the people arrested in the case are allegedly linked to Sanatan Sanstha and its allied outfit Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. “The case is in the final stage of investigation. We will file a chargesheet in the case in two months,” Investigating Officer M N Anucheth said. Lankesh was shot dead on the night

of September 5, 2017, from a close range in front of her Rajarajeshwari Nagar house around 8 pm. The SIT got a breakthrough in its probe when a Gujarat-based forensic lab confirmed that Parashuram Waghmare shot and killed her. The SIT, formed by then chief minister Siddaramaiah, has arrested suspected mastermind Amol Kale and shooter Parashuram Waghmare among others. A few others are yet to be nabbed.

Bridge collapse kicks off political slugfest in West Bengal

Kolkata : A day after the collapse of a portion of Majerhat bridge in the West Bengal capital, a political slugfest erupted with the opposition parties on Wednesday accusing the TMC government of “neglecting” repair and maintenance of bridges and only painting various installations blue and white. The Trinamool Congress, however, dubbed the allegations baseless and said the state government had taken enough steps for repair of old and new bridges, which were in a dismal condition during the Left Front rule.

Use data science for risk prediction

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has invested a lot in recent years in revamping its technology platforms. It now gets granular details of all trades carried out in the market from the exchanges, along with information on intermediaries and participants. Various reporting and surveillance tools have been installed on top of the data, which generates alerts and allows its officers to examine each market activity in detail. But going forward, this may not be enough. Given the widespread use of technology by market participants and the preponderance of algorithmic trading in capital markets, Sebi needs to invest heavily in automation tools, artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, and predictive analytics. These tools will be able to sift through the large quantity of data residing in its data warehouses and deliver meaningful insights, including behavioural trading patterns of market participants. For this to happen, Sebi must bring all its existing platforms under one unifying technology policy framework. This will help integrate these platforms and allow them to converse with each other. First, Sebi must create a data science department that will focus on reviewing financial statements and filings to detect reporting, disclosure and audit failures. The principal goal of the department will be detection and prosecution of violations involving false or misleading financial statements and disclosures. The department will also focus on identifying and exploring areas susceptible to fraudulent financial reporting, including the ongoing review of financial information and use of data analytics. To complement the insights obtained using data analytics, the department personnel would review the results manually and apply their industry expertise and professional scepticism. This would be essential to address the risk of false positives that data analytics may generate. Therefore, manual intervention and analysis is critical. This department should consist of professionally qualified people, including inter alia data scientists, statisticians, chartered accountants, lawyers, financial analysts, forensic specialists, and industry and tax experts. Second, Sebi should create a sub-unit for assessing accounting quality. As I have highlighted elsewhere , the quality of accounting in Indian firms remains poor despite the presence of self-regulatory organizations such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Academics in finance and accounting have long studied the information contained in financial statements to better understand the discretionary accounting choices that are made when presenting financial information to shareholders.

The way we look has a profound psychological impact on us… A little vanity here and there does no one any harm. It’s important to do what makes you happy, even if it’s something as simple as wearing a wig, bright red lipstick, high heels…. All that white noise doesn’t make a difference in the

When I was testing out the wigs, I had a brief moment of selfdoubt… “Am I vain for wanting to look good?” As part of the entertainment industry, you’re always expected to look good… Maybe that has been ingrained in me? But then I gave it a thought and I realized I like looking good for me. If I’m in the mood to wear a scarf, I will. If I want to walk around bald and free, I will. Only you know what would make you feel good, and what works best for you.” Sonali Bendre concludes, “So take every opportunity you can to #SwitchOnTheSunshine.

Please don’t ban me: Virat Kohli after the finger flick during India vs Australia 2012 Test

New Delhi: Virat Kohli admitted that he may have “got away” with what he did during the 2012 Sydney Test between India and Australia. The image of Kohli showing a middle finger to the Australian crowd spread like wildfire across the cricketing world and he said that it is one episode he would like to forget. “The one thing I remember most is when I’d had enough of the Australian crowd at Sydney [in 2012] and I just decided to flick a [middle] finger at them,” he recalled in an interview with Wisden Cricket Monthly. “The match referee [Ranjan Madugalle] called me to his room the next day and I’m like, ‘What’s wrong?’ He said, ‘What happened at the boundary yesterday?’ I said, ‘Nothing, it was a bit of banter’. Then he threw the newspaper in front of me and there was

this big image of me flicking on the front page and I said, ‘I’m so sorry, please don’t ban me!’ I got away with that one. He was a nice guy, he understood I was young and these things happen,” he said. Kohli had accumulated a number of negative headlines in the early days of his international career but has since simmered down considerably. “I really laugh at a lot of the things I did when I was younger but I’m proud that I did not change my ways because I was always going to be who I am and not change for the world or for anyone else. I was pretty happy with who I was.” Kohli said that his coach Rajkumar Sharma played a major role in shaping his technique and personality. Sharma runs the West Delhi Cricket Academy in New Delhi of which Kohli is an alumnus of.

Alastair Cook reveals how he broke his retirement news to teammates

New Delhi: England opener Alastair Cook has revealed that he cried while breaking the news of his retirement to teammates. Cook, 33, is England’s all-time leading run-scorer and the sixth-highest run-scorer in Test history. He will hang his boots after the fifth and final Test between India and England which begins on Friday. Reflecting on the moment when he spoke in the dressing room, the former England skipper said, “I was a couple of beers in, otherwise I would have cried more than I actually did. At the end of the game I said, ‘It might be good news, it might be sad for some, it might be happy for others, but it’s time and I have done my bit. I will play one more game. There was a

little bit of silence, then Mo [Ali] said something, everybody laughed and it was forgotten about,” said Cook. “Over the last six months there have been signs in my mind this was going to happen. I had always been mentally tough and had that edge to everything I’ve done – and that edge had kind of gone,” he added. Cook has featured in 160 Test matches, scoring 12,254 runs. He made his Test debut in Nagpur in 2006 at the age of 21, and scored a century in the second innings. Recalling his journey, Cook said, “I can look back and say I became the best player I could have become and that means a lot to me. I was never the most talented cricketer, but I definitely got everything out of my ability.

Southampton: India might have lost the Test series in England but coach Ravi Shastri believes that the current crop of players are travelling much better than the teams of the last 15-20 years. Earlier, India lost the fourth Test at Southampton by 62 runs as England took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. However, the Indian coach stated that his team tried hard and played better overseas than Indian teams of last 15-20 years “As hard as our guys tried, England were one-up on us

there. Nothing to take away (from them), the endeavour of this team is to travel well, compete and win. If you look at the last three years, we have won nine matches overseas and three series (against West Indies and twice in Sri Lanka),” Shastri said while addressing the media on Wednesday. “I can’t see any other Indian team in the last 15-20 years that has had the same run in such a short time, and you have had some great players playing in those series. So the promise is there, and it’s just about getting tougher

mentally. You have got to hurt when you lose matches because that’s when you look within and come out with the right kind of answers to combat such situations and get past the finishing line. One day you will if you believe,” PTI quoted Shastri as saying. Emphasising the need of mental fortitude the Indian head coach said, “I think you have got to get tough mentally. We have run teams close overseas and we have competed. But now it’s not about competing (any longer). We have to win games from here onwards.

Rafael Nadal drops 1st set 6-0 before edging Dominic Thiem in 5-set thriller

New York : Rafael Nadal began his US Open quarterfinal as poorly as possible, shut out in a set by a 6-0 score for only the fourth time in 282 career Grand Slam matches. On the previous three such occasions, he’d lost. On this one, he managed to come back to win, although it took 4 hours, 49 minutes and never did get easy for him. The defending champion and No. 1 seed at Flushing Meadows recovered from his disastrous start and other stumbles along the way to beat No. 9 Dominic Thiem 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5) for a semifinal berth at a third

consecutive Grand Slam tournament, winning a physical, back-and-forth tussle that stretched across and concluded after 2 a.m. Wednesday. How tense and tight was this one? Not only was Nadal two points from losing at 5-all in the closing tiebreaker, but he finished with fewer total points, 171-166. When it ended, on an overhead by Thiem that sailed long, Nadal climbed over net to hug his opponent and whisper words of encouragement. “I’m very sorry for Dominic,” Nadal told a rowdy crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium. “He’s a close friend on tour. He’s a great guy. A great player.”

This rematch of the French Open final in June, won by Nadal, was his first match against a top-20 opponent at the US Open since 2013, when he beat then-No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final. It sure seemed at the shocking outset as if Nadal was somehow unprepared for this step up in competition. Thiem collected 24 of the opening set’s 31 points, thanks in large part to a 13-3 edge in winners. Hard to not think back to 24 hours earlier, when Nadal’s great rival, No. 2 seed Roger Federer, was upset in the fourth round during similarly muggy conditions.

Representatives of Patidar organisations have now said they will

no longer mediate with the government unless they have a mandate to do so in writing from PAAS. The BJP-led state government held a meeting with several key leaders of the Patidar community at Gandhinagar Tuesday night, hours after doctors expressed concern over the health of Hardik, who has lost almost 20 kgs of weight in the last eleven days. international ‘Let’s Kill him! Let’s go in’: Donald Trump said on Assad, claims new book

Washington : President Donald Trump insisted Wednesday that he’s “the exact opposite” of Bob Woodward’s portrayal of him in a new book that has set off a firestorm in the White House with its descriptions of current and former aides calling Trump an “idiot” and a “liar.” Trump complained on Twitter that people can “get away with” such depictions and again suggested changing libel laws. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Fox News she hasn’t spoken with Trump about filing any libel lawsuit. The tell-all book by a reporter who helped bring down President Richard Nixon quotes Trump aides disparaging the president’s judgment and claiming they plucked papers off his desk to prevent him from withdrawing from a pair of trade agreements. Woodward’s book is the latest to throw the Trump administration into damage-control mode with explosive anecdotes and concerns about the commander in chief. The Associated Press obtained a copy of “Fear: Trump in the White House” on Tuesday, a week before its official release.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to throw open the gates of NRTU in Vadodara giving a fillip to the technical capabilities of the Indian railways. Initially, it is expected that the university would provide two courses namely a BBA in Transportation Management and BSc in Transportation Technology. and development. Some of the areas where the university is expected to impart education relate to the fields of radio frequency identification, artificial intelligence and satellite based tracking. It is expected that the University would accommodate around 3000 full time students in the near future while also boosting employability options and stoking entrepreneurial spirits. agitation leader Hardik Patel’s hunger strike entered the 12th day, the Congress Wednesday endorsed his demands for farm loan waiver and accused the BJP government in Gujarat of neglecting farmers. A war of words broke out between the BJP and the Congress following Congress in-charge for Gujarat Rajiv Satav’s visit to Hardik Patel, who is on an indefinite fast since August 25 at his house near here. Satav endorsed Hardik Patel’s demand for farm loan waiver and alleged that the BJP does not care about farmers. “BJP never talks about farmers and their issues. It only remembers them during elections and forgets them afterwards. The state government must discuss the issues raised by Hardik,” he said after meeting the agitating leader. “Since the BJP government has not taken any initiative to persuade Hardik to end his fast, we will meet the CM to discuss the issue. The government has to bow down. If it does not, we will mount pressure. We have sought time from the chief minister (Vijay Rupani) for a meeting,” Satav said. Former Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt arrested for allegedly framing lawyer in 1996 case

Ahmedabad : Former Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was arrested by police on Wednesday in connection with a 1996 case in which a Rajasthanbased lawyer was allegedly framed in a narcotics case. He was picked up from his home at around 9.30 am for questioning before being placed under arrest. DGP CID (crime) Ashish Bhatia told The Indian Express: “3-4 months back the Gujarat high court had asked the CID to investigate this case and we had formed a SIT which probed and found Sanjiv Bhatt had made out a

false case against the lawyer. We have taken him for questioning. In all, we have 7 persons detained.” The lawyer, Sumersingh Rajpurohit, had filed a case in 1996 against Bhatt, who was then serving as SP of Banaskantha district, and several others. The Gujarat High Court had recently ordered a special investigation team (SIT) of CID to probe the case, 22 years after Rajpurohit filed a complaint in Pali, Rajasthan. Rajpurohit also named Justice Jain, a former sitting judge in the Gujarat High Court, and Bhatt’s subordinate officers.

make its stand clear about Hardik’s demand on reservations for the Patidar community in the OBC quota. “Satav said many things but he did not mention how his party will give reservation to Patidars when the Supreme Court has put a cap of 50 per cent. Congress’s double standard has been exposed with the party not making its stand clear,” the BJP minister said. “Congress needs to introspect what it did for farmers. No government in the past has done what the NDA government at the Centre did for farmers. In Gujarat, we have allotted a budget of Rs 30,000 crore for the farm sector,” the minister said. “The government is of the opinion that Hardik should end his fast and cooperate with doctors,” he added. Hardik Patelled Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) said it will mount pressure on the government by approaching MLAs and MPs. “PAAS members and farmers will call on all 182 MLAs, 26 Lok Sabha members and 11 Rajya Sabha members (from the state) from tomorrow and ask them if they support Hardik’s cause or not,” said PAAS convener Manoj Panara.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has arrived in Nauru to attend an all-day leader’s retreat and the signing ceremony. Earlier Wednesday, Pacific fishing and community groups signed an agreement with the European Union to improve sustainable fishing and ocean governance in the region.

A new TV show has Vladmir Putin staring at goats, picking berries and talking to teens

New York : What is the best way to deal with dipping political ratings? If you are Russian President Vladimir Putin, it’s apparently to start a TV show featuring clips of you picking berries in the wilderness, staring at goats and being interviewed by teenagers. On Sunday, Rossiya 1, a state television channel, aired the first episode of “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin.” — an hourlong show featuring highlights of the president’s recent travels around Russia, along with much studio discussion praising the president as a model of vigor and compassion. In one segment he was shown picking and then eating berries. “We should gather these and go to the collective farm market,” he said. The show comes at a time of relative difficulty for Putin. Last month, he was forced to dilute a much-despised plan to save money on state pension by raising retirement ages. The plan has hurt his popularity, with his approval rating falling from around 80 percent to the mid-60s, its lowest level since he annexed Crimea in 2014, before rebounding to about 70 percent. The show, which can be watched on YouTube, spent about a third of its running time on the pension changes, but largely to praise Putin for taking responsibility for making such difficult but necessary step now when he could have safely waited until the end of his term. The Kremlin tracks the president’s ratings zealously, and if the past is any guide, Putin does best among supporters when he plays the “father of the nation” role.
