Kerala govt orders closure of school ‘to prevent Muslims from joining ISIS’ gns, Thiruvanathapuram: The Kerala government has ordered the closure of a private school at Kochi for having contents in its syllabus that go against the country’s secular policies. The order for the school’s closure, issued on Thursday, said it was highly necessary to stop the operation of such institutions “to prevent the Muslims from joining ISIS (Islamic State) activities.” Inquiries revealed that the textbooks at the Peace Foundation International School, were aimed at the propagation of ideas contradicting the country’s secular policies besides trying to spread propaganda which was against the country’s policies, an order said. “Hence in order to prevent the Muslims from joining IS activities, it is highly necessary to stop the operation of such institutions,” the order said. Modi’s ‘Gross Divisive Policy’, Jaitley’s ‘genius,’ destroying economy: Rahul New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday came up with a new description for what he thinks is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political style. Rahul came up with his own version of GDP as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to hit a four year low in 2017-18 at 6.5 per cent, as opposed to 7.1 per cent in 2016-17, calling it Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Gross Divisive Politics’ in a tweet. With the Union Budget presentation scheduled on February 1, Rahul also took

a jibe at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, referring to his ‘genius’ in a sarcastic, negative manner saying how its combination with Modi’s Gross Divisive Politics became lethal for the country’s economy. On Friday, Rahul lashed out at the Union Government regarding delay in passing the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013. Rahul was earlier fiercely critical about both demonetisation and GST, both his choice weapons during the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh election campaigns in 2017.

The Uddhav Thackerayled party, a junior ally in the BJP-led government, bemoaned large-scale damage to property by protesters during the January 3 bandh in Maharashtra called by Dalit outfits to denounce the violence at Bhima–Koregaon in Pune district. “Dalits are calling

for bandh and Hindutvawadi groups are taking out morchas. It looks like Maharashtra is moving towards chaos and destruction due to caste conflict instead of prosperity,” read an editorial in the Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’. The Sena organ said if the bandh called by the Prakash Ambedkar-led Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) was peaceful, his stature as a leader would have risen. “His followers have become directionless. A journey within

One of the long-cherished desires everyone has is to travel across the world. Growing up, I have always been keen on the diverse cultures, different faith traditions and indigenous tribes. But what I come to realise now, after visits to various parts of the world, is that the creator of this universe has laid down a multicultural ecosystem where a huge spectrum of religions, traditions and cultures co-exist in perfect harmony; where you can find a masjid (mosque) and a mandir (temple), a church and a synagogue or a Buddhist, Jain or Sikh temple in one block. This divine diversity inspires us to be open to the rich experiences of plurality in the wider world. It invites us to reflect on the call of Ibn al-Arabi in his poetic expression in Tarjuman al-Ashwaq (translation of the desires): “My heart is capable of every form; it is a pasture for gazelles and a convent for monks, a temple for idols and the Kaaba for pilgrims, and the tables of the Torah and the Quran. I follow the religion of love wherever its caravans are heading. Love is my religion, and love is my law.” Both Rumi and Tabrizi regarded all faith traditions and all parts of the earth as waves of the ocean of the divine unity. Islam sees all prophets as one, as clearly stated in the Quran: “We make no distinction between one and another of his messengers.” However, despite the fact that the unity of existence (Wahdatul Wajud) is embedded in all living traditions; they merely differ in the external practices they have carried along with them. Rumi reminds us of this eternal truth in his Masnavi. He writes that the Muslim who prays in a mosque with open hands, and a Christian who makes the sign of a cross in a church and a Jew who prays in a synagogue, all turn to the same creator. “If we get stuck in the conventional formalities and are overtaken by appearances, we categorise them as Muslims, Christians, Jews and others based on their beliefs and the houses of worship they attend. However, in the sight of God, no matter what their religion or creed is, they all are his creatures,” he wrote. Once, during the Mevlevi Sema (Turkish Sufi music with whirling), while Rumi was whirling in his spiritual ecstasy, a drunkard appeared among the whirling dervishes. He could not control himself and would lurch and hit Rumi time and again. During the whirling, Rumi’s disciples who observed this began to scold him. But Rumi, who himself saw this, showed utmost patience, forbearance and tenderness. He said: “Friends, he is the one who drank the wine, but you are the ones who got drunk of the divine. Why are you scolding him?” Remarkably, Rumi never reacted even to the slanders and grim allegations his jealous rivals labelled against him. Rumi rather believed that there are two archenemies of the human beings, which keep them away from being humane. One is greed and the other is anger. “Greed and anger make a man squint-eyed; they change the spirit so that it departs from rectitude,” he said.

Interestingly, this is one of the first times Jennifer and Angelina, who are both Brad Pitt’s exes, will come together for an event. EOnline.com reported that this year’s Golden Globes is all about women coming together, thanks to the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements. While Jennifer recently donated $500,000 to the Time’s Up GoFundMe campaign to aid men and women who suffer sexual abuse, Angelina, publicly spoke out against Harvey Weinstein. Some of the other presenters at the ceremony include Halle Berry, Emilia Clarke, Penélope Cruz, Gal Gadot, Hugh Grant, Kit Harington, Neil Patrick Harris, Chris Hemsworth, Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Watson and Ricky Martin. Several women will be sporting black as a moment of solidarity on the red carpet.

Filmmaker Karan Johar said he would be happy to have Kangana Ranaut as a celebrity guest on his upcoming show ‘India’s Next Superstars’. Karan and Rohit Shetty will be seen as judges on ‘India’s Next Superstars’ to be aired on Star Plus from January 13, while Priyanka Chopra will be the first guest on the show. When asked if Kangana Ranaut would be invited on the show, Karan said, “I am sure when Star Plus invites her, we will be happy to have her. Our hearts are big, our house is open to all. We will happily, lovingly and respectfully welcome her on the show.” Karan and Kangana were engaged in a war of words over a remark on “nepotism” that made headlines last year. The tagline of the show is ‘Na Khaandaan Na Sifaarish’ and when asked whether he was looking for an opportunity to answer about nepotism, Karan said, “I don’t think this tagline was an answer from my side to anything. Lot of people want to be part of the entertainment industry, but it is difficult to find a platform. We are providing this platform to all those who are talented.” Talking about the definition of superstardom, Karan said, “It is difficult to define superstar, if we knew the meaning then there would be millions of superstars. It’s a feeling that an actor and audience has.

When Akshay Kumar was made to feel like an outcast on a film’s set He may have now become one of the most bankable actors in Hindi film industry, but during the initial days of his career in Bollywood, Akshay Kumar said he was treated like an outsider. The 50-year-old actor, who has given some major blockbusters such as ‘Special 26’, ‘Baby’, ‘Airlift’, and ‘Rustom’ in the past one decade, said an actor’s luxury on a film’s set depends on the number of hits and flops. “Yes, I was made to feel (outcast). I remember while doing a two-hero film, my three-four films didn’t work, but his (the other hero) did. We were having an equal role, but he gets a suite room and I get a single room. He gets an amazing car, but I get that ‘you come in the bus,’ yes it really happens,” Akshay said in a media interaction.

The Vampire Diaries actress Nina Dobrev swam with sharks for a good cause. Hello! Canada reported that in the video PSA for the organisation Oceana, Nina expresses her love for sharks and her passion to save the ocean. “I used to be scared but then I learned the facts. Sharks keep the ocean healthy and they aren’t really interested in us,” Nina said. “It’s our interest in their fins that’s scary. Millions of sharks end up in the global fin trade every year, and many grow slowly which means they face a high risk of extinction. Please help and join me and Oceana in the campaign to stop the trade of shark fins and help save sharks,” the star added.

22-year-old singer Dua Lipa was criticised after one of her cover songs back from 2014 surfaced with her using inappropriate language. Dua took to Twitter to apologise. “In relation to my 2014 cover I never meant to offend or upset anyone. I didn’t say the full word but I can admit I shouldn’t have gone there at all and that a different word could’ve been recorded altogether to avoid offence and confusion. I wasn’t thinking it through at the time,” she tweeted, adding, “I always stand up for social justice and I am very sorry to anyone that I have offended (sic).”

Shraddha Kapoor has done it again. After emerging as a winner in the ‘race’to be Prabhas’leading lady in ‘Saaho’, the actress has beaten names like Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha and Vaani Kapoor to be the lead opposite Shahid Kapoor in ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu.’ “Shraddha was keen to come on-board because it is a career-defining role. The film is a love story at its core set in a small town. It is also socially relevant as it highlights the issues of electricity shortage that the common man faces,” producer Prernaa Arora confirmed the news to Mumbai Mirror. This film will be the second collaboration between Shraddha and Shahid after the critically acclaimed ‘Haider’ in 2014. The actress plays a North Indian in the movie, a character which plays an important role in the narrative. ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’ throws light on the issues surrounding electricity in the country, with Shahid playing a lawyer in it. “Instances have been reported where even after not being at home for a better part of the month, families return to huge electricity bills. The film investigates such issues with a sarcastic undertone,” Prernaa told about the story. India gave away 25-30 extra runs in 1st innings to South Africa: Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Cape Town: Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar admitted that the bowling attack gave away 2530 runs too many as South Africa reached 286 in their first innings despite being reduced to 12 for 3 within the first half an hour. “If we want to be hard on ourselves, then yes we did give away a few too many runs to South Africa. I think they scored 25-30odd extra runs. In every hour of play, there were 2-3 overs, where we gave away easy boundaries. That is an area we can improve on,” Bhuvneshwar said at the end of the day’s play. South Africa maintained a run-rate of over four runs per over before ending at 3.90 in 73.1 overs. “It is a concern for us. During the break also, we were talking about bringing the runrate down because in Test cricket four runs per over is a lot. This is something we want to improve when we bowl in the second innings but overall we are happy with the lines and lengths we bowled,” he added. Bhuvneshwar finished with figures of 4 for 87 but missed out on a five-for as Shikhar Dhawan dropped Keshav Maharaj (then on nought) at slip.

2019 fiscal year. Elaborating on the ‘wrongdoings’ by the previous board, Balakrishnan said, “unfortunately, it never clearly understood the culture or value systems followed by Infosys under its founders, which resulted in excessive senior management salaries and a huge disconnect with rest of the organisation.” “The former CEO’s (Vishal Sikka) salary was increased substantially without clear reason while the rest of the organisation had to contend with meager salary hikes and reduced variable compensation,” he added. gns, Bengaluru: Former Infosys Chief Financial Officer V Balakrishnan on Saturday praised the company’s cofounder Nandan Nilekani for correcting the ‘wrongdoings’ committed by previous board, by fixing a reasonable salary for the incumbent CEO. “I think the board under Nandan has done the right thing to correct the previous wrongdoings.. The salary structure for the current Chief Executive Officer Salil Parekh looks reasonable with a large part tied to variable salary with greater focus on long-term retention,” he told PTI here. Balakrishnan said it is important for the board to clearly articulate the performance metrics for the vesting of variable salaries to senior management. “The metrics should have clear focus on increasing shareholders’ value by achieving superior growth.. If the board wants to exercise any discretion it should be explained to the shareholders with proper reasoning,” he said. Balakrishnan also said when the founders ran the company, the senior management salaries were reasonable enough to attract top talent and were never considered excessive.

However, the college management justified the result, saying they had awarded marks as per university guidelines. It also clarified that 12 out of 38 students have failed, and not 50% (19) as claimed by the students. The internal exam includes marks for attendance in classes as well as timely submission of completed assignments. “I had submitted my assignment but was given just 3 marks. Is that even possible? Can my marks be so low?” asked an angry student. The results had been announced a month back and the college had given them time to make representation if they had any doubts or objection. As many as 10 students on Friday made a representation to the principal in this regard. “How can 50% students fail in the exam? Colleges are making it tough for students and ensuring they do not pass. We have made a representation to the authorities and if they do not do justice to us, we will go on strike,” threatened Narayan Desai, an NSUI member.

PALANPUR/AHMEDABAD: In a grim reminder of the seven year-old boy’s murder in Ryan International School in Gurgaon, the murder of a class III boy in a village near Mehsana has turned out to a horrid crime committed by his 14-year old friend and schoolmat. Mehsana police arrested the class VIII boy after rigorous interrogation on Friday and he has confessed to killing nineyear-old Hiren Thakor in Sardarpur (Chikna) village near Satlasna. The reason for the murder has turned out be a fight over snatching kites. It was on December 23 that Hiren’s father lodged a complaint with Satlasna police after he did not return from the school. After nearly 10 days, his body was found dumped in a pit behind the school’s staffroom on December 31. Mehsana superintendent of police Chaitanya Mandlik told TOI that the accused juvenile and Hiren were friends as their houses were opposite each others. Hiren often used foul language at the accused, who, in return used to thrash him. “Hiranya’s mother would then go the accused’s house and pick up a fight with his family members for beating her son. The deceased’s father also used to beat up the accused and this happened at least 2-3 times a week,” Mandlik said.

dry and cold air to the state. This situation is likely to continue at least for two days,” said Jayant Sarkar, director of IMD Gujarat. Sarkar confirmed that Ahmedabad city recorded its coldest day of the season so far. The IMD warning reads, “Cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated

places over Gujarat region and Saurashtra-Kutch.” On Friday, the night temperature in Ahmedabad was 3.7 degrees below normal and the day temperature was 27.2°C, 0.3 degrees below normal. international Islamabad: Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said the United States was behaving towards Pakistan as “a friend who always betrays” after Washington suspended aid and President Donald Trump accused Islamabad of lies and deceit over many years. Opposition leader Imran Khan, a former cricket star tipped as the next prime minister, said it was time for Pakistan to “delink” from the United states and run down US diplomatic and intelligence presence in what is a sensitive strategic area. sentiment and tense USPakistan ties are some way off their recent nadir in 2011, when Osama bin Laden was killed in a secret US raid inside Pakistan, but the harsh rhetoric is likely to make it harder to mend future ties. “The US behavior is neither

that of an ally nor of a friend,” Asif told local Capital TV late on Thursday. “It is a friend who always betrays.” Small groups of students chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Trump” burnt American flags and torched photos of Trump after Friday prayers in capital Islamabad and the eastern city of Lahore. The organized protests ended swiftly. Worsening ties may push Pakistan further into the arms of long-time ally China, which backed Islamabad after the fallout from Trump’s tweet. Beijing’s diplomatic and financial support has also strengthened Pakistan’s hand, analysts say.

After aid cut, WH says, ‘all options’ open to deal with Pak terror problem

gns, Washington: The US is keeping “all options” on the table to deal with Pakistan if it does not take decisive action against the Taliban and the Haqqani network and dismantle their safe havens, the White House warned Saturday. The warning came after the US suspended about USD 2 billion in security aid to Pakistan for failing to clamp down on terror groups. The freezing of all security assistance to Pakistan comes after President Donald Trump in a New Year’s Day tweet accused the country of giving nothing to the US but “lies and deceit” and providing “safe haven” to terrorists in return for USD 33 billion aid over the last 15 years. “The US does have a range of tools that we’re looking at beyond just the security assistance issue to deal with Pakistan and to try to convince it to crack down on the Taliban and Haqqani network,” a senior Trump administration official told reporters. “Certainly no one should doubt the US resolve to address this threat and all options I would say will be on the table,” said the official on condition of anonymity.

thronged recreational places like the Sabarmati riverfront, Kankaria lakefront, Vastrpur lake and SG highway, to enjoy hot beverages in the chilling cold. Footpath-dwellers shivered and bonfires were ubiquitous. According to IMD Ahmedabad, the city will likely register a minimum temperature of 8°C on Saturday along with a clear sky. In other parts of the state, the dry and cold weather is likely to continue and temperature could plunge one or two notches further. Apart from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, Mahuva town in Bhavnagar district recorded a minimum temperature of 9.5°C. Five or six other towns were hovering around the 10°C mark on Friday.

Twitter explains why Trump can continue making scandalous public posts San Francisco: Twitter Inc on Friday reiterated its stance that accounts belonging to world leaders have special status on the social media network, pushing back against users who have called on the company to banish US President Donald Trump. “Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets would hide important information people should be able to see and debate,” Twitter said in a post on a corporate blog. Twitter had already said in September that “newsworthiness” and whether a tweet is “of public interest” are among the factors it considers before removing an account or a tweet. The debate over Trump’s tweeting, though, raged anew after Trump said from his @ realDonaldTrump account on Tuesday that he had a “much bigger” and “more powerful” nuclear button than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Critics said that tweet and Trump’s continued presence on the network endanger the world and violate Twitter’s ban on threats of violence.
