Islam will collapse, become irrelevant if prayers in mosque not recognised, SC told Islam is congregational religion and will ‘collapse’ if prayers in mosque is not recognised, argued senior counsel Rajeev Dhavan in SC.

New Delhi: Islam is a congregational religion and it will “collapse and become irrelevant” if the practice of offering prayers in mosque is not recognised, argued senior counsel Rajeev Dhavan in the Supreme Court on Friday. Dhavan, appearing for the main petitioner M Siddiq, made this submission before a three-judge bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Ashok Bhushan and Abdul Nazeer, hearing the appeals relating to the title dispute in the Ramjanmabhoomi site at Ayodhya.

Dhavan reiterated that 1994 Constitution Bench verdict holding that “Mosque is not an essential and integral part of Islam and Muslims can do their prayer anywhere was not correctly decided.” Quoting various scriptures, counsel argued that mosques are not built for fun.

“Offering prayers in mosques is an essential aspect of religious practice. If you take away the congregational prayer, then Islam will collapse. Islam will become irrelevant if this religious practice is not recognised. The 1994 judgment has taken away the right to offer prayers without any material and without any adjudication and this requires reconsideration,” he added. The Supreme Court resumed hearing the Babri Masjid-Ram Temple land dispute case today.

The growth and inflation prospects for the current year

It is only in June every year, after the gross domestic product (GDP) estimates are issued on 31 May for the four quarters of the concluded fiscal year, that one really gets a handle on what is happening in the Indian economy. There was elation over the headline GDP growth rate of 7.7% clocked in Q4 of fiscal year 2017-18 (FY18), but it is only by delving into the folds of the data that this uptick can be evaluated for whether it can be expected to carry forward into the current year. And it is also useful to remember that the FY18 figures will be revised further on. The National Accounts Division of the Central Statistics Organisation does not make life easy for you. The 31 May press note is in pdf format, which takes a long time to be copied and transposed on to a spreadsheet. Here is yet another appeal to them to make the next data release, for Q1 of the current year due on 31 August, downloadable in XLS format. Back to the numbers. For the India growth story, I prefer to look at growth rates of gross value added (GVA) rather than GDP, which adds on indirect taxes (net of subsidies) to GVA. This add-on can be more easily visualized today after the goods and services tax (GST) was introduced, as a value added tax, levied on the (tax-excluded) value of production. GVA growth rates are based on that underlying value. GDP at current prices is perfectly valid as the aggregate of expenditure in the economy inclusive of indirect taxes like GST, to use as the denominator for fiscal or external trade deficit percentages. But for assessing real growth, GDP is a little difficult to comprehend in countries like India, where the pattern of indirect taxes and subsidies varies from year to year. GVA real growth by contrast is easy to comprehend, and enables a decomposition of overall growth into sectoral components, and an examination of what drives each sector. GDP, on the other hand, is decomposed into expenditure components, of which investment is an important one, but the further breakdown of investment into public and private investment is issued with a considerable time lag. There are measurement problems, leaving a statistical discrepancy to bridge the gap between the whole and the sum of its parts, which can sometimes be as high as 4% of the total. GVA growth in Q4 of FY18 was 7.6%, close to the GDP growth rate of 7.7%. So, on that basis, can we take the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) projection of 7.4% GDP growth as reasonable, even perhaps a little conservative? We need to look at the components of GVA for that. I like to construct an aggregate which I call core GVA, after excluding from overall GVA two sectors—agriculture and public administration.

But in case you were thinking that the Sanjay Dutt biopic is the only movie to have minted the whopping amount, you are mistaken. There have been quite a few movies in the past that have proved to be successful and have collected over Rs 200 crore at the box office, all in a week’s time. Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s movie Sultan had also done incredibly well at the domestic box office. The movie had released on Eid and collected Rs 229.16 crore in nine days. It crossed the Rs 200 crore mark in a week as well. Whereas, the Hindi version of the massively successful Baahubali 2: The Conclusion had minted an impressive Rs 247 crore in seven days. And the figures of the Prabhas and Rana Daggubati film is especially stupendous as the movie had a non-holiday release. Another Salman Khan movie that was able to do the unthinkable was filmmaker Kabir Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai, a sequel to the successful Ek Tha Tiger.

Arshad’s co-star from the film Anil Kapoor tweeted to him that it was a “Total Dhamaal” working with the Jolly LLB actor. “Cracking me up every chance you got so much so that my jaw would hurt! From Sanju to 3 Idiots: Movies in Rs 200 crore club New Delhi : Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanju has done extremely well for itself. And that’s an understatement. The movie has crossed the Rs 200 crore landmark in just seven days. The biopic has minted Rs 202.51 crore till now. Kapoor’s Sanju and Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s Padmaavat are the only movies to have reached the Rs 200 crore mark so far this year. However, there are quite a few films in the past few years who have made it to the Rs 200 crore club. From this year’s Sanju to the Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots, there are in total 17 movies that have done the unthinkable and have slayed the box office game. Rajkumar Hirani’s super successful movie 3 Idiots made a lifetime collection of Rs 202.47 crore in an estimated 70 days, which’s still commendable for the time the film was released (December 25, 2009). Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s comedy-drama Chennai Express garnered Rs 227.13 crore at the Indian box office. Released on August 8, 2013, the film reached the Rs 200 crore mark in 15 days.

Elon Musk offers help as rescue effort ramps up to extract trapped boys inside Thailand cave

Thailand : Rescue teams thrashed through dense forest hundreds of metres above a cave complex on Friday, searching for an alternative way to extract 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped inside for nearly two weeks. Their work above the Tham Luang cave near Thailand’s northern border with Myanmar took on added urgency as forecasts for rain threatened a plan to bring the boys back through cramped, water-logged passageways to the cave entrance. “We want to find the way down. I believe we are close,” Thanes Weerasiri, president of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, told Reuters at a makeshift camp for volunteers and media near the cave. Helicopters buzzed overhead before flying to the dense blanket of green hills above the cave to help look for an alternate extraction route. Rescue efforts since British divers found the team on Monday have focused on draining the flooded cave and teaching the boys – some of whom are as young as 11 and not competent swimmers – to attempt dives that would challenge expert cavers.

Washington : Ahead of the NATO Summit in Brussels next week, President Donald Trump has said he would ask NATO members to start paying their bills as the US is not going to take care of everything. Trump will travel to Brussels, the headquarters of NATO in Belgium, on Monday where he is expected to call on members of the security alliance to increase their own defence spending. “I’ll see NATO and I’m going to tell NATO — you got to start paying your bills. The US is not going to take care of everything,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Montana last night. He lashed out at Europe over defence spending and trade, saying the US is paying for anywhere from 70 to 90 per cent to protect Europe, but the European countries are not fair to the US on trade. “They kill us on trade. They kill us on other things. They make it impossible to do business in Europe, and yet they come in and they sell their Mercedes and their BMWs to us. So we have USD 151 billion in trade deficits with the EU. On top of that, they kill us with NATO. They kill us,” he said.

US seeks court guidance on deadlines to reunite migrant families

Washington : The US government is seeking guidance from a federal court over its efforts to reunite migrant parents and their children before court-imposed deadlines after the administration separated the families for crossing the USMexico border illegally. In a filing overnight, US Department of Justice officials asked the United States District Court for the Southern District of California for more details about procedures to reunite migrant families, saying in some cases the government may need additional time. The separations have sparked a fierce outcry and numerous protests, part of a political firestorm over US President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and beefed-up efforts to deter illegal US entry. The Trump administration had implemented the separation policy as part of stepped-up efforts to deter immigrants from crossing the US border from Mexico. But it reversed course last month amid a groundswell of global opposition and said it would keep families together if possible. US officials are now rushing to reunite more than 2,000 children separated from their parents at the border after the court in San Diego ordered the government last month to halt the practice.
